  • Alonso, deGrom lead Mets past Diamondbacks 3-1
    September 9, 2019
    By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Pete Alonso hit two home runs to take the major league lead, Jacob deGrom struck out 11 and the New York Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 Monday night in the opener of a crucial four-game series for both teams.

The Diamondbacks slipped to 2 + games behind the Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot and the Mets trail by four.

Alonso hit a solo drive in the first inning, then connected for his 47th home run in the fifth. He moved two ahead Mike Trout for most in the majors and closed within five of Aaron Judge's rookie record set two years ago.

DeGrom (9-8) allowed one run and three hits in seven innings. He gave up a home run to former teammate Wilmer Flores in the fifth.

Seth Lugo pitched two innings for his fifth save.

Merrill Kelly (10-14) allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings.

    YANKEES 5, RED SOX 0

BOSTON (AP) -New York officially ended Boston's three-year reign as AL East champs.

The defending World Series champion Red Sox are still in playoff contention, but barely. They began the day eight games out of the second AL wild-card spot.

James Paxton (13-6) won his eighth straight start, allowing four hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked three in setting a career best in victories as the Yankees increased their lead to nine games over second-place Tampa Bay.

Austin Romine and Gio Urshela each hit solo homers for the Yankees, who took the final three of a four-game series. New York increased its club record to 270 homers, a night after setting the mark.

Eduardo Rodriguez (17-6) gave up one run in six innings, striking out nine with five hits and a walk while throwing a season-high 117 pitches.

Jackie Bradley Jr. had three hits for Boston.

    ASTROS 15, ATHLETICS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Zack Greinke struck out five in six strong innings, Robinson Chirinos and Yordan Alvarez each homered twice as Houston hit a major league-record six home runs in the first two innings, and the high-scoring Astros routed Oakland for their fifth straight victory.

After a 21-1 win over Seattle on Sunday, the Astros set a franchise record for runs scored in consecutive games with 36.

Houston hit six of its seven homers in the first two innings for an 11-0 lead. The seven shots matched a franchise record for homers in a game set Sept. 9, 2000, against the Chicago Cubs. Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve and Michael Brantley also homered.

The Astros extended their lead over Oakland to 10 + games in the AL West.

Greinke (15-5) retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced. He allowed just two hits and didn't walk a batter.

Houston's offensive exploits spoiled Mike Fiers' try at a piece of A's history. The right-hander had won 12 straight decisions and was bidding to match Hall of Famer Catfish Hunter's run in 1973 for the best since the club moved to the Bay Area.

Fiers (14-4) allowed a career-high nine runs on nine hits in one-plus innings. He allowed a career-high five home runs.

    BRAVES 7, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mike Foltynewicz threw seven impressive innings, Josh Donaldson and Ronald Acuna Jr. hit homers and NL East-leading Atlanta beat Philadelphia.

Atlanta increased its lead over Washington to 9+ games and reduced its magic number to 10 with 17 games remaining. The Phillies fell three games behind the Cubs for the second wild-card spot in the NL.

Foltynewicz (6-5) retired the first 13 batters before Corey Dickerson went deep in the fifth. He gave up three hits, one run and struck out seven. The right-hander won his fifth straight decision.

Aaron Nola (12-5) gave up four runs and six hits in six innings. The Phillies have lost their ace's last four starts.

Cesar Hernandez hit a solo homer off Josh Tomlin in the ninth to cap the scoring.

    BREWERS 8, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Rookie Trent Grisham had a career-high five hits and drove in two runs, and Milwaukee won its fourth straight.

Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run homer and Lorenzo Cain had three hits and knocked in a run for the Brewers in a game that lasted 4 hours, 8 minutes.

Milwaukee moved within six games of idle first-place St. Louis in the NL Central. The Brewers remain two games out of the second wild-card spot occupied by the division rival Chicago Cubs.

The game featured 15 pitchers who combined for 14 walks. The Marlins loaded the bases in four innings while the Brewers did it three times.

    PIRATES 6, GIANTS 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Rookie Bryan Reynolds hit a go-ahead single against his former team during a four-run rally in the ninth inning that sent Pittsburgh over San Francisco.

Down 4-2, the Pirates used three pinch-hitters and came back against three Giants relievers in the ninth.

Kevin Newman hit a tying, two-run single with one out and Reynolds with an RBI single off Jandel Gustave. Jose Osuna added a sacrifice fly in the ninth for insurance.

Fernando Abad (0-2) gave up two hits and a walk while getting only one out.

Richard Rodriguez (4-5) pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Felipe Vazquez worked the ninth for his 26th save in 29 chances.

Brandon Belt had three hits, including a two-run double for San Francisco.

    INDIANS 6, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Shane Bieber pitched seven stellar innings of five-hit ball in his first career start at his hometown stadium, and rookie Yu Chang hit his first major league homer in Cleveland's win over Los Angeles.

Bieber (14-7) struck out eight without a walk while allowing only one run for the first time since July. He retired 17 of his final 18 hitters.

Chang hit a three-run homer and Jason Kipnis had a two-run shot for the Indians (84-61), who pulled right behind Oakland (84-60) for the second AL wild-card spot with their first back-to-back wins in September.

Albert Pujols hit his 655th homer and two-way prospect Jared Walsh added his first career homer for the Angels.

Patrick Sandoval (0-3) took the loss.

    CUBS 10, PADRES 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Touted prospect Nico Hoerner had three hits and four RBIs in his big league debut and made some nice plays at shortstop as Chicago beat San Diego and snapped a three-game losing streak.

The 22-year-old Hoerner, the Cubs' first-round draft pick out of Stanford in 2018, was promoted from Double-A Tennessee earlier in the day because All-Star shortstop Javier Baez and Addison Russell are sidelined by injuries.

The Cubs hold the NL's second wild-card spot.

Nicholas Castellanos hit a two-run homer and Kyle Schwarber had a solo shot to back Kyle Hendricks, who pitched 5 2/3 strong innings.

Hendricks (10-9) allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out five and walking one.

Cal Quantrill (6-7) allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings, struck out five and walked two.

        • Tuesday’s 6-pack

Six interesting pointspreads for this week’s college football:

          — Washington State (-7.5) @ Houston

          — NC State (-7) @ West Virginia

          — Air Force @ Colorado (-3.5)

          — USC (-4.5) @ BYU

          — Iowa (-1.5) @ Iowa State

          — Arizona State @ Michigan State (-13.5)

          Quote of the Day

“The scary thing for Atlanta wasn’t in the score in Minnesota, though that wasn’t good. It was that the offensive line, after massive offseason investments there, wasn’t better. Matt Ryan was sacked four times. And if you take away two 12-yard Ryan scrambles, the Falcons rushed for just 49 yards on 15 carries. Which obviously isn’t good enough”
          Albert Breer

          Tuesday’s quiz
How many NFL teams share their stadium with a major league baseball team?

          Monday’s quiz
Matt Prater holds record for the longest field goal in NFL history, a 64-yarder in 2013.

          Sunday’s quiz

Sam Elliott played Bradley Cooper’s brother in A Star is Born.

          ********************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

          13) Last 10 years, NFL teams that won by 28+ points in Week 1 are 1-10 vs spread in Week 2.

NFL teams that lost by 28+ points in Week 1 are 7-3-1 vs spread in Week 2.

          12) Gardner Minshew is Jacksonville’s new starting QB; he has an interesting story:

          — Minshew was at Troy State for a semester but transferred to Northwest Mississippi CC.
          — He led Northwest Mississippi to the 2015 NJCAA national championship, then moved on to play ball at East Carolina.
          — He split playing time in two years at ECU, then was going to transfer to Alabama for his last year, sit on the bench in hopes of learning under Nick Saban and becoming a coach someday.

          — But he transferred to Washington State instead, because they needed a QB last year, and he lit the Pac-12 up under coach Mike Leach.
          — He threw 50+ passes in 10 of his 13 starts at Wazzu, was Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year .
          — Now he is Jacksonville’s starting QB. He’ll be able to write a great book someday.

          11) Last four years in the NFL, the teams that played on Thursday night in Week 1 have covered seven of eight games in Week 2. This year, that would be Green Bay/Chicago.

          10) If you’re an Arizona Cardinal fan, 4th quarter of Sunday’s game with Detroit had to be very exciting, with Kyler Murray leading a comeback from down 24-6 to force OT.

First three quarters were ugly; it will be interesting to follow them this season. Once they play some games and that offense is on film more, will defenses find it easier to stop them?

          9) 49ers intercepted three passes at Tampa Bay Sunday; they picked off two passes all of last season.

          8) Strange fact of the day:

Odell Beckham Jr wore a watch while he played Sunday; the watch is a Richard Mille 011 Orange Storm, which sold for $160,000 when it was first produced in 2014, but is supposed to be worth as much as $340,000 now- only 30 of them were made.

          7) Saints 30, Texans 28:
          — Houston led 14-3 at the half but allowed 27 points in 2nd half.
          — Watson threw for 268 yards, ran for 40 more but took some big hits.
          — Game went over the total despite a scoreless first quarter.

          — Lutz kicked a 58-yard FG at the gun for the dramatic win.
          — Total yardage was 510-414; Brees threw ball for 370 yards.
          — Thomas, Ginn both had 100+ receiving yards.

          6) Raiders 24, Broncos 16
          — ESPN should make Levy-Greise-Riddick the regular Monday night broadcast team; they’re very good.
          — Down 21-6 with around 8:00 left, Denver kicked a field goal that didn’t help them at all.
          — David Carr had a very big game; completed 22-26 passes.

          5) Jacksonville traded a 5th-round draft pick to the Steelers for QB Josh Dobbs, who will back up Gardner Minshew. Dobbs was a 2-year starter in college at Tennessee.

          4) Lynn Swann resigned as USC’s athletic director; would be nice if the school hired someone to be AD who didn’t play football for the Trojans- their last three athletic directors were Mike Garrett, Pat Haden and Swann.

          3) Since August 1st, Cardinals’ P Jack Flaherty has allowed three earned runs in 54 IP.

          2) San Francisco Giants are 69-75 in Bruce Bochy’s last season as manager, but a word of caution— the Giants have the best record in baseball (33-15) in one-run games, meaning they’re likely to regress some next year, especially with a new (and probably lesser) manager in 2020.

          1) Red Sox fired Dave Dombrowski the year after they won the World Series; seriously?

Is there no loyalty left in the world? Unless he was showing up to work drunk, how do you fire a guy whose Boston teams finished first three of his four years there, and still has an outside shot at making the playoffs this year?

Lot of internal politics in professional sports, lot of back stabbing.

                      • LEADING OFF: Astros romping, Trout out, long games
                        September 10, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                        HOUSTON HAMMERS

Rookie Yordan Alvarez and the Houston Astros have set a franchise record by totaling 36 runs in their last two games, helped by exceptionally fast starts.

On Sunday, the AL West leaders built a whopping 13-0 cushion in the first three innings on their way to a 21-1 rout of Seattle - Alvarez had three doubles and a single and drove in six runs.

On Monday night, Alvarez homered in each of the first two innings as Houston rushed to an 11-0 lead. The Astros hit seven homers overall and pounded Oakland 15-0.

The Astros have won five in a row and next take on A's righty Tanner Roark (9-8, 3.86 ERA). Wade Miley (13-4, 3.35) starts for host Houston.

                        TROUT OUT

Angels star Mike Trout has undergone a cryoablation procedure to alleviate pain in his right foot. Manager Brad Ausmus described the procedure as relatively minor and said the slugging outfielder could return later this series against Cleveland.

Trout has been bothered by nerve pain in his foot for several weeks, but has largely played through it. The cryoablation procedure uses extreme cold to essentially deaden the tissue around the irritated nerve.

Trout is batting .291 with an AL-leading 45 homers and 104 RBIs. His .438 on-base percentage leads the majors.

                        NICE START

Touted prospect Nico Hoerner had three hits and four RBIs in his big league debut, helping the Cubs increase their lead for the second NL wild-card spot.

Hoerner also made some nice plays at shortstop Monday night as Chicago beat San Diego 10-2 to snap a three-game losing streak. The Cubs lead Milwaukee by two games.

The 22-year-old Hoerner, the Cubs' first-round draft pick out of Stanford in 2018, was promoted from Double-A Tennessee earlier in the day because All-Star shortstop Javier Baez and Addison Russell are sidelined by injuries.

                        WELCOME BACK

Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto makes his season debut after recovering from Tommy John surgery. The two-time All-Star hasn't pitched in a major league game since July 28, 2018. He starts at home against Pittsburgh.

                        CLOCKED

Big league bullpens are full this month, boosted by September call-ups, and a plethora of pitching changes is contributing to longer and longer games.

The Brewers beat Miami 8-3 Monday night in a matchup that took 4 hours, 8 minutes. The game featured 15 pitchers who combined for 14 walks.

On Sunday, the Phillies topped the Mets 10-7 in 4:29 - one minute from matching the longest nine-inning NL game. Each team used eight pitchers and the clubs used up all 16 dozen baseballs that were prepped pregame, forcing another couple dozen to be rubbed up and put in play.

                        MATCHED UP

The Braves have won 90 games this year, matching their total from last season when they took the NL East. At 90-55, they lead the division by 9 1/2 games over Washington.

''It's a very good number, that's for sure,'' Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. ''We've got a lot of baseball to play, so hopefully we get a lot more.''

Lefty Max Fried (16-4, 3.86 ERA) tries to add to Atlanta's total when he starts at Philadelphia against Jason Vargas (6-7, 4.27).

                            • Dodgers clinch 7th straight NL West title
                              September 10, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their seventh consecutive NL West title in fitting fashion, using two home runs by Corey Seager and a masterful pitching performance by Walker Buehler to beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 on Tuesday night.

After the final out, the first team to clinch a playoff spot this season gathered at the mound for a subdued celebration that included a wardrobe change for a pending champagne celebration in the clubhouse.

Los Angeles, coming off consecutive World Series losses to Houston and Boston and seeking its first title since 1988, will likely begin the postseason at Dodger Stadium on Oct. 3 against the NL wild-card team.

This is the earliest that Los Angeles (94-52) has ever clinched the division, both in terms of date and games. The 1977 team did it in Game 151, and the 2013 club clinched on Sept. 19.

Though an Arizona loss to the New York Mets would have clinched it for the Dodgers, Los Angeles emphatically took care of business on its own. Seager homered with two on to cap a four-run first inning against Ty Blach (1-3) and added a two-run drive in the third for a 6-0 lead.

Gavin Lux hit his first career homer in the fifth to increase the Dodgers' NL record for long balls in a season to 258.

Buehler (13-3) limited last-place Baltimore to four hits over seven shutout innings. He struck out 11.

                              BREWERS 4, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) -Christian Yelich broke his right kneecap on a foul ball and will miss the rest of the regular season, an injury that overshadowed Milwaukee's win over Miami.

The Brewers didn't say whether the reigning NL MVP might be able to return for the playoffs that begin Oct. 1 if they make it that far. Yelich will return to Milwaukee on Wednesday for further evaluation.

Milwaukee, which won its fifth in a row, began the day two games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.

Yelich fouled a ball off his leg in the first inning. He was down on the ground for several minutes before limping off the field.

Pinch-hitter Tyler Austin lifted a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. Yasmani Grandal led off with a single against Adam Conley (2-9), Grisham doubled and Austin put the Brewers ahead.

Junior Guerra (9-5) got the win. Drew Pomeranz pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Starlin Castro homered for Miami. Hernan Perez hit his 19th of the season for Miami.

NEW YORK (AP) - Zack Wheeler pitched one-run ball over seven innings, Justin Wilson navigated four difficult outs for his first save since April and New York beat Arizona.

New York has taken the first two games in this key four-game set between NL playoff contenders. Arizona had won 11 of 14 and opened the day 2 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second wild card.

Todd Frazier drove a pair of run-scoring doubles for the Mets, who began the day four games behind the Cubs.

Diamondbacks rookie Zac Gallen (3-5) pitched three-run ball over six innings.

Eduardo Escobar homered off reliever Brad Brach and drove in two for Arizona. He has 112 RBIs.

Wheeler (11-7) struck out seven and allowed seven hits and two walks.

                              PHILLIES 6, BRAVES 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Corey Dickerson homered twice to help Philadelphia's wild-card push and the Phillies hit five home runs overall in a win over Atlanta.

The Phillies entered three games behind the Cubs for the second wild-card spot in the NL.

J.T. Realmuto, Bryce Harper and Dickerson all homered in the first inning, Scott Kingery hit an inside-the-park homer and Dickerson tacked an insurance run with a solo shot late to help the Phillies win for the third time in four games.

Blake Parker (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings of the relief for the win. Hector Neris worked a scoreless ninth for his 25th save.

Max Fried (16-5) took the loss for Atlanta, which got run-scoring hits from Freddie Freeman, Dansby Swanson and Francisco Cervelli. Johan Camargo added a solo homer.

                              TIGERS 12, YANKEES 11

DETROIT (AP) - Jordy Mercer capped a comeback from a six-run deficit with a game-ending single off Chance Adams in the ninth inning, and Detroit overcame six home runs by New York.

Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius each homered twice, and Gleyber Torres and Edwin Encarnacion also went deep for the Yankees, whose 276 homers tied Minnesota for the major league lead.

New York led 6-0 in the second inning. But the Tigers tied the score with six runs in the third, aided by an error by Torres at second base.

Grayson Greiner doubled with one out in the ninth off Chance Adams (1-1) and Mercer's single to the gap in right-center scored pinch-runner Willi Castro. Tigers closer Jimenez (3-8) pitched a perfect ninth.

BLUE JAYS 4, RED SOX 3

TORONTO (AP) - Rowdy Tellez hit a two-run home run, Cavan Biggio and Reese McGuire added solo shots and Toronto snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over Boston.

Biggio walked twice and scored twice, and McGuire had two hits.

Mookie Betts homered for the Red Sox, who have lost four straight.

Justin Shafer (2-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings as Toronto won for the first time since Aug. 31. Ken Giles finished in the ninth for his 19th save in 20 opportunities.

Josh Taylor (1-2) took the loss.

                              TWINS 5, NATIONALS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Berrios surrendered two singles over seven innings in his best start in six weeks, Mitch Garver hit the tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh, and Minnesota beat Washington.

Berrios (12-8) struck out four and walked one. Anibal Sanchez (8-8) was almost as sharp for the Nationals, finishing with four hits and one walk allowed, along with five strikeouts.

The American League Central-leading Twins took a five-game lead on Cleveland into the night. The Indians, who have six more losses than the Twins, played at the Los Angeles Angels.

The Nationals entered 9+ games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, but they were in the first wild card spot, 4+ games above the cut, ahead of Milwaukee. The Chicago Cubs have the second spot.

                              WHITE SOX 7, ROYALS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Rookie Eloy Jimenez hit his first career grand slam, Yoan Moncada launched a two-run homer and Chicago beat Kansas City.

Adam Engel added a solo shot for as the White Sox won their second straight, but just their fourth in 14 games.

Adalberto Mondesi, Alex Gordon and Ryan O'Hearn went deep for the Royals.

Ivan Nova (10-12) allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings to snap his three-game losing streak. The right-hander yielded six hits, while walking none and striking out five.

Jakob Junis (9-13) permitted five runs in five-plus innings in losing for the third time in four decisions.

                              ATHLETICS 21, ASTROS 7

HOUSTON (AP) - Matt Olson and Sean Murphy each homered twice, and Oakland tagged Wade Miley for seven runs in the first inning and scored a season-high 21 runs in a rout of Houston.

After being blanked in a lopsided loss on Monday, Oakland recovered to win its seventh of nine and remained ahead of Cleveland for the second AL wild-card spot.

The Astros were coming off a 21-1 win over Seattle on Sunday and a 15-0 thrashing of Oakland on Monday in which they hit seven homers. It was the first time the Athletics had been shut out since May 9.

But on Tuesday, the A's had a season-best 25 hits and built a 7-0 lead in the first inning without an extra-base knock. They still ended up tying a season high with six homers after not hitting any in their previous two games.

Houston's Wade Miley (13-5) allowed seven hits and seven earned runs in a third of an inning.

Tanner Roark (4-1) worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs and a walk with three strikeouts.

                              ROCKIES 2, CARDINALS 1

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado hit a 482-foot two-homer that bounced out of Coors Field in the first inning, Chi Chi Gonzalez got his first big league win in four years and Colorado slowed St. Louis' playoff push.

St. Louis had won 23 of 30 coming in to open a four-game lead in the NL Central over the second-place Chicago Cubs.

Gonzalez (1-6) allowed one run and four hits in six innings. Jairo Diaz got six outs and finished a six-hitter for second save.

Michael Wacha (6-7) allowed five hits in four innings and is winless in seven starts and two relief appearances since July 19.
