    • Semien helps A's beat Royals 2-1
      August 28, 2019
      By The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Marcus Semien provided just enough early offense and Mike Fiers and three Oakland relievers combined to shut down the Kansas City Royals in a 2-1 victory Tuesday night.

Semien scored in the first inning and drove in a run in the second. That was all the offense the A's pitchers needed one day after Oakland had a season-high 19 runs.

Fiers (13-3) scattered eight hits in his 5 1/3 innings, but allowed just Alex Gordon's RBI double in the sixth. He's now won 11 straight decisions, dating to May 7, tying Mark Mulder for the second-longest winning streak in Oakland history.

Mike Montgomery (3-7) surrendered an unearned run in the first and another run in the second, but gave up nothing else through 6 1/3 innings.

      ORIOLES 2, NATIONALS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Aaron Brooks came up with an unexpected pitching gem against the torrid-hitting Nationals, throwing six innings of two-hit ball to help Baltimore end Washington's five-game winning streak.

The Nationals were coming off a weekend sweep of Chicago Cubs and had won 12 of 14 to take control of the NL wild-card race before getting upended by the neighboring, last-place Orioles.

Brooks (4-7) came in with a 6.21 ERA and was facing a team averaging 9 1/2 runs over its last 11 games. The right-hander allowed just four baserunners and struck out six, including four in a row bridging the first and second innings.

Rookie Hunter Harvey worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, and Mychal Givens, the last of four Orioles relievers, got three straight outs to complete the four-hitter and earn his 11th save.

Washington's Patrick Corbin (10-6) gave up two runs and four hits in seven innings with nine strikeouts.

      CUBS 5, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Yu Darvish pitched eight masterful innings, Javier Baez homered and drove in three runs, and the Cubs topped the Mets in the opener of a pivotal three-game series in the NL wild-card race.

Baez and Addison Russell each hit a two-run homer off Marcus Stroman (7-12). Darvish (5-6) allowed five hits, struck out seven and issued one walk - his first in six starts since his last one on July 23.

Pete Alonso hit his 42nd home run for the Mets, becoming the first rookie in 81 years to break his team's season record. J.D. Davis also went deep in the ninth against Brandon Kintzler.

New York dropped its fourth straight, all at home, and fell three games behind Chicago for the second NL wild card.

      ASTROS 15, RAYS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Rookie Yordan Alvarez homered twice as Houston jumped on former teammate Charlie Morton to build a big lead before Justin Verlander was ejected in the sixth inning.

The Astros honored Morton (13-6) with a pregame video recounting the highlights of his two-year stint with the team.

Houston's hitters didn't give Morton nearly as warm of a reception in his first trip to Minute Maid Park since signing with the Rays. The Astros tagged him for seven hits and a season-high six runs in four innings, which tied his shortest start this season.

Verlander (16-5) was ejected for yelling at home plate umpire Pat Hoberg in the sixth. He became upset when he thought he struck out Tommy Pham, but the pitch was called a ball.

The Rays got their only run on Joey Wendle's first homer of the season in the seventh.

      BLUE JAYS 3, BRAVES 1

TORONTO (AP) - Justin Smoak homered and drove in two runs, leading Toronto to the victory.

Smoak hit an RBI single off Mike Soroka (10-3) in a two-run first, and added his 20th homer in the seventh against Sean Newcomb.

The NL East-leading Braves lost their second straight following an eight-game winning streak that matched a season high. They managed just four runs while playing in New York, Colorado and Toronto in a span of three days.

Former Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson went 0 for 4 in his first game back in Toronto.

Zack Godley (4-5) pitched three innings for the win. Ken Giles, the seventh Toronto pitcher, got three outs for his 17th save.

      REDS 8, MARLINS 5

MIAMI (AP) - Curt Casali homered and drove in three runs, helping the Reds to the victory.

Casali hit a tying solo drive off Caleb Smith (8-8) in the fourth inning. He batted again in the fifth and hit a two-run single off Tyler Kinley, giving the Reds a 5-3 lead.

Cincinnati also got a big game from Eugenio Suarez, who went deep for the third straight day and finished with three hits. Suarez leads the team with 37 homers.

Jorge Alfaro homered for the third straight game for last-place Miami, which has dropped three of four. Jon Berti had three hits, and Isan Diaz had two RBIs.

Luis Castillo (13-5) struck out 11 in six innings for Cincinnati. Raisel Iglesias got four outs for his 27th save.

      RED SOX 10, ROCKIES 6

DENVER (AP) - Jackie Bradley Jr. opened Boston's three-homer night with a solo shot into the third deck.

Bradley's estimated 478-foot blast in the second inning was the seventh-longest this season, according to Statcast.

Christian Vazquez added a two-run homer and Xander Bogaerts contributed a solo shot as the Red Sox ran their long-ball streak to 17 straight games.

Rick Porcello (12-10) threw five solid innings and allowed two runs.

Colorado outfielder Sam Hilliard had a two-run homer in his major league debut. Nolan Arenado added a two-run homer in the ninth for the Rockies. Rico Garcia (0-1) got the loss in his first big league start.

      DIAMONDBACKS 3, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Mike Leake pitched into the eighth inning in his first win since joining Arizona in a trade.

Ketel Marte homered in the fifth for Arizona, but came up limping as he ran the bases and left because of a cramp in his right hamstring. Marte's single in the third gave him a 10-game hitting streak and career-best 21-game streak safely reaching base.

Adam Jones hit a go-ahead single in the sixth off Sam Coonrod (4-1), and Christian Walker added an RBI single the next inning as Arizona won the season series 10-9.

Leake (10-10) won his fifth start since he was acquired in a trade with Seattle on July 31. Archie Bradley got three outs for his ninth save.

      CARDINALS 6, BREWERS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Yadier Molina homered twice and the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals matched a season high with their sixth straight win in a rain-delayed game inside Miller Park.

Play was halted briefly with the Cardinals batting with two outs in seventh inning as rain poured through the open roof and fans rushed to the covered concourses. The delay lasted about nine minutes as the retractable roof closed.

St. Louis right fielder Dexter Fowler preserved the win by jumping at the wall to catch a drive by Hernan Perez with two on for the final out.

Miles Mikolas (8-13) struck out 10 for the Cardinals, who have won 15 of 18 and are a season-best 15 games above .500.

Molina's solo homer in the fifth inning made it 1-all. After Paul DeJong walked with one out in the seventh, Molina homered off the left-field foul pole against reliever Matt Albers (5-4) to break the tie.

      TWINS 3, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Marwin Gonzalez and Jonathan Schoop hit solo homers in the second inning, and Michael Pineda pitched five sharp innings to lead Minnesota.

Eddie Rosario knocked in an insurance run in the eighth as the AL Central-leading Twins won their third straight to remain 3 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland. Minnesota (80-51) moved to 29 games above .500 for the first time since Sept. 26, 2010.

Tim Anderson's 14th homer accounted for the only run off Pineda (10-5), who won his third straight start and fourth straight decision. The right-hander allowed four hits and walked one while striking out eight, but was replaced by Sam Dyson to start the sixth after 89 pitches.

Tyler Duffey, Sergio Romo and Taylor Rogers followed as Minnesota's bullpen came through with four scoreless innings. Rogers pitched a perfect ninth for his 21st save.

Lucas Giolito (14-7) gave up two runs and four hits with three walks in six innings, while striking out nine to reach 203 for the season.

      PIRATES 5, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins kept Phillies fans booing when he inexplicably dropped a routine throw at first base in the ninth, turning what appeared to be an inning-ending double play into the go-ahead run for Pittsburgh.

After a pair of one-out walks by Hector Neris (2-5), Kevin Newman hit a grounder to second baseman Cesar Hernandez that could've let the Phillies escape. Jean Segura's relay throw should have finishing the inning, but the struggling Hoskins seemed to close his mitt too early and the ball smacked off the leather and rolled away. Adam Frazier scrambled home to score the tiebreaking run in stunning fashion and the Phillies failed to gain ground in the NL wild-card race.

Felipe Vazquez (5-1) got the win for the Pirates with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Sean Rodriguez provoked the ire of Phillies fans a day after he won a game a with an extra-inning home run and blasted the crowd for booing. Rodriguez was booed during lineup introductions and each time he came to hit.

      INDIANS 10, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Franmil Reyes hit a three-run homer to highlight a six-run seventh inning, and Cleveland beat Detroit for the 12th straight time and 13 in 14 matchups this season.

Carlos Santana had three hits and scored three times for Cleveland, while four pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts.

Detroit is now 17-44 at Comerica Park and needs to win five of the final 20 home games to avoid becoming the first team since at least 1908 to lose 60 at home.

The Tigers also lost Miguel Cabrera, who left the game after two at-bats with tightness in his left biceps - the same one he tore to end his 2018 season in June.

Adam Plutko (6-3) improved to 2-0 in his last three starts, giving up one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out a career-high nine.

Spencer Turnbull (3-13) allowed four runs and seven hits, needing 98 pitches to get through five innings. He is tied for third in the majors in losses, one behind Brad Keller and Aaron Sanchez.

          • LEADING OFF: Indians minus RamÃ*rez, Paxton-Sheffield
            August 28, 2019
            By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

            MAKE DO

Jose Ramirez's regular season is over. The postseason remains in play - if the Indians can make it without him.

Cleveland's hard-hitting third baseman is expected to need five to seven weeks to recover after underdoing hand surgery. Ramirez, whose hot bat the past two months helped get the Indians back into playoff contention, fractured the hamate bone in his right hand while taking a hard swing Saturday.

The team estimates he could be back as early as Oct. 1, when the AL playoffs open. Rookie Yu Chang and Mike Freeman will fill the spot in his absence.

            REMEMBER US?

Yankees lefty James Paxton faces his old team when he starts at Seattle against Mariners youngster Justus Sheffield. Paxton was dealt from the Mariners to New York last November and Sheffield was the centerpiece of the trade package in return.

Paxton (10-6, 4.43 ERA) won his fifth consecutive start last Friday against the Dodgers, allowing two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings for the AL East leaders. It will be the second career start for Sheffield (0-0, 6.43), who struggled early and lasted only four innings in his first start last Friday against Toronto.

            IN THE CARDS

Yadier Molina keeps mashing at Miller Park. The veteran St. Louis catcher has seven home runs this season, including three in the first two games of the series against the Brewers Molina has seven career multihomer performances, four of them in Milwaukee.

The NL Central-leading Cardinals have matched a season high with six straight wins. The 6-3 victory Tuesday night was delayed for about nine minutes in the late innings when rain began pouring through the retractable roof, which soon got shut.

Jack Flaherty (8-6, 3.32 ERA) starts for St. Louis in the series finale. Jordan Lyles (8-8, 4.69) tossed six hitless innings in his last start vs. Arizona.

            BIG APPLE BOPPERS

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge became the third-fastest player in history to reach 100 home runs when he connected Tuesday night at Seattle. Judge reached the 100 mark in his 371st game. Only Ryan Howard (325) and Yankees teammate Gary Sanchez (355) got there faster. ... Mets slugger Pete Alonso became the first rookie in 81 years to break his team's season home run record when he hit No. 42 on Tuesday night. Todd Hundley shared the club mark of 41. The 24-year-old Alonso won the All-Star Home Run Derby in July. Johnny Rizzo was the previous major league rookie to take sole possession of his club's homer mark when he hit 23 for the Pirates in 1938. Rizzo's franchise mark was matched by Ralph Kiner in 1946.

            LET'S SEE

Washington closer Sean Doolittle will throw a simulated game and if all goes well could be activated as soon as this weekend. He's been out with tendinitis in his right knee.

Doolittle will work out before Max Scherzer (9-5, 2.41 ERA) starts the series finale at Nationals Park against Baltimore.

            DETROIT DOWNER

The Tigers have lost 12 straight to the Indians and are 13-1 against them this season. Carlos Santana had three hits and scored three times as Cleveland romped 10-1 on Tuesday night.

Detroit star Miguel Cabrera exited after two at-bats with tightness in his left biceps, the same one he tore to end his 2018 season in June.

The Tigers are 17-44 at Comerica Park and needs to win five of the final 20 home games to avoid becoming the first team since at least 1908 to drop 60 at home. Jordan Zimmermann (1-9, 6.48 ERA) starts against Indians rookie Aaron Civale (1-3, 1.82).

                          STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                          STREAKING

                          Gerrit Cole, Houston Astros (15-5, 2.75, $394):
Cole is making his case for the AL Cy Young stronger and stronger with each appearance. The strikeout master has a 1.32 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP while racking up 55 punchouts in 41 innings over his last six starts. Also, in 15 starts since the end of May, he has allowed more than two earned runs, just one time. Yeah, not bad. Cole’s been so good, that and the ‘Stros are -235 home favorites against a good Rays team tonight.

                          SLUMPING

Vince Velasquez, Philadelphia Phillies (5-7, 4.93 ERA, $271):
The Phillies need Velasquez to break out of his funk if they don’t want to fall further back in the NL wild card race. The right-hander owns an ugly 9.42 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP over his last three starts and is coming off getting lit up by the Marlins of all teams for seven runs on five hits in just 2.1 innings his last time out. Either way, he and the Phillies are -145 home favorites against the floundering Pirates.

                          3 STRIKES

                          OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE

The Toronto Blue Jays did something Tuesday that they’ve only done three previous times in 2019: defeat a National League opponent. The Jays’ 3-1 home win over the Atlanta Braves was just the fourth interleague victory for the club, which sits at a major league-worst 4-13 versus the Senior Circuit this season. Toronto is now 2-7 against NL clubs at home, averaging only 3.3 runs per game in those contests and scoring three or fewer runs in six of those games.

                          RED-HOT STARTS

We’ve hinted at the Cincinnati Reds’ first-inning aptitude all season and while the team hovers below the .500 mark on the year, it continues to cash in for those playing first-inning odds markets. The Reds pushed two runs over home plate in the opening frame of Tuesday’s 8-5 win over the Miami Marlins and have outscored opponents 107-69 in the first inning on the season. Cincinnati ranks tops in first-inning scoring at 0.82 runs per game while Miami sits worst in the league in that same metric, plating an average of only 0.31 runs in the opening inning. The Reds are priced at +230 to lead after one inning Wednesday night.

                          BIG BOSTON BATS

The Boston Red Sox are smashing the baseball to close out August, recording at least one home run in each of their past 17 games heading into Wednesday. The Red Sox smacked three round-trippers in Tuesday’s 10-6 road win over the Colorado Rockies and have a good chance of extending that HR steak to 18 games with some help from Coors Field – the best hitters park in baseball. Boston outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has been at the core of this power surge, collecting five home runs (17 on the season) in his last 10 games including a 478-foot dinger in Tuesday’s win.

DENVER (AP) - Xander Bogaerts went deep twice as Boston extended its home run streak to 18 games in a win over Colorado.

It's the third-longest streak in franchise history. Boston's best run was 22 straight games with a homer in 2016.

The heart of the order powered the Red Sox as they finished a two-game sweep of Colorado. Rafael Devers, Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez went a combined 8 for 14 with four home runs. Bogaerts had a two-run homer in the fifth inning and a solo shot in the seventh. Martinez got things rolling with a two-run drive in the third, and Devers went deep in the ninth.

Eduardo Rodriguez (16-5) lasted five innings and allowed three runs.

Brandon Workman struck out the side for his ninth save.

Rockies rookie Peter Lambert (2-5) gave up five runs over 4 1/3 innings. He hasn't won since June 11.

                              BREWERS 4, CARDINALS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Keston Hiura homered and drove in three runs, Jordan Lyles turned in another strong start and Milwaukee snapped St. Louis' six-game winning streak.

The NL Central-leading Cardinals had won 15 of 18 and were trying for a three-game sweep. The Brewers ended a three-game skid.

Hiura hit a solo home run in the fourth, sending a 3-0 fastball from Flaherty into the left-field seats. Hiura added an RBI double in the eighth.

Lyles (9-8) struck out five of the first seven Cardinals he faced. He fanned nine in 5 1/3 innings. Josh Hader struck out three in two scoreless innings to earn his 26th save.

Jack Flaherty (8-7) allowed five hits and three runs, two earned, in six innings. He struck out seven, walked one and took the loss.

                              INDIANS 4, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Jason Kipnis homered twice and Francisco Lindor also went deep to lift Cleveland to another win over Detroit.

Cleveland is 14-1 against the last-place Tigers this year, and that's a big reason the Indians are firmly in the postseason hunt.

Aaron Civale (2-3) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking none. Brad Hand finished for his 32nd save in 37 chances.

Detroit starter Jordan Zimmermann allowed two runs in six innings, but Buck Farmer (5-5) allowed Lindor's one-out solo shot in the eighth, which bounced of the top of the wall and over in center field. That gave the Indians a 3-2 lead.

                              Dawel Lugo homered for Detroit.

                              BRAVES 9, BLUE JAYS 4

TORONTO (AP) - Freddie Freeman hit his 36th home run and drove in a pair of runs, Matt Joyce homered and had two RBIs and Atlanta beat Toronto.

Ronald Acuna Jr. added a two-run double as the NL East-leading Braves snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the ninth time in 11 games.

Atlanta reliever Luke Jackson (8-2) pitched 1 1/3 innings to win his fifth straight decision.

Toronto's Brandon Drury hit an RBI groundout off Braves right-hander Mike Foltynewicz in the fourth and a second run scored on a passed ball. Randal Grichuk hit an RBI double in the fifth and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made it a one-run game with a two-out RBI single off Jackson in the sixth.

Jacob Waguespack (4-2) lost for the first time since July 26 against Tampa Bay, ending a five-start unbeaten streak. The rookie allowed five runs, three earned, and six hits in three innings, his shortest start of the season.

                              CUBS 10, METS 7

NEW YORK (AP) - Kyle Schwarber hit one of Chicago's three homers against a stunned Noah Syndergaard, and the Cubs built an early nine-run lead before closer Craig Kimbrel held off New York in the ninth.

Nicholas Castellanos and Ian Happ also took Syndergaard (9-7) deep in the worst start of the 2016 All-Star's career. Syndergaard allowed 10 runs and three homers - both his most in the majors - and was pulled after three miserable innings.

Kimbrel entered with a three-run lead and let his first two batters reach in the ninth. He escaped a dicey 3-0 count against red-hot Amed Rosario with a fielder's choice, struck out Juan Lagares and got Todd Frazier to fly out for his 12th save.

Chicago climbed within two games of the NL Central-leading Cardinals, who lost 4-1 to the Brewers.

New York has dropped five straight, all at home.

Kyle Ryan (4-2) got the win.

                              ROYALS 6, ATHLETICS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Hunter Dozier homered before driving in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, Ryan O'Hearn also went deep and Kansas City held on to beat Oakland.

Tim Hill (2-0) tossed two perfect innings in relief of Jakob Junis for the Royals, and Ian Kennedy survived a harrowing ninth inning to pick up his 23rd save.

Blake Treinen (6-5) faced four batters in the seventh inning without recording an out for Oakland. He allowed three hits and a walk, and Jake Diekman allowed one of his inherited runners to score.

Marcus Semien and Mark Canha homered for the A's.

                              REDS 5, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Aristides Aquino tied a National League rookie mark with his 13th home run this month, powering Anthony DeSclafani and Cincinnati Reds over Miami.

Eugenio Suarez hit his 38th homer, connecting in the fourth straight game for the Reds.

Aquino hit a three-run shot in the first. The 24-year-old outfielder matched the NL homer mark for rookies in a month set by Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers in June 2017.

The major league rookie record for homers in a month is 18 by Rudy York of Detroit in August 1937. Aquino, who got one at-bat in the majors last year, also doubled as the Reds beat Miami for the third straight day.

DeSclafani (9-7) had his longest outing of the season, throwing seven innings of two-hit ball. He struck out eight and walked one.

Sandy Alcantara (4-12) gave up four runs and six hits, struck out eight and walked one in six innings.

                              NATIONALS 8, ORIOLES 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Max Scherzer struck out eight to reach the 200 mark for an eighth straight season, Kurt Suzuki homered and drove in four runs and Washington beat Baltimore.

Scherzer allowed two runs and six hits over 4 1/3 innings. Wander Suero (5-7) followed Scherzer as the National won for the sixth time in seven games.

The Nationals scored five runs on five hits in the first inning against Asher Wojciechowski (2-7).

Chance Sisco and Chris Davis homered for the Orioles, who settled for a split of the four-game season series.

                              ASTROS 8, RAYS 6

HOUSTON (AP) - George Springer broke a tie with a bloop RBI single in a three-run seventh inning and Houston rallied to beat Tampa Bay and extend its winning streak to six.

Alex Bregman had three hits and an RBI and Yuli Gurriel hit a two-run homer for Houston.

Gerrit Cole allowed six hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings, but did not factor into the decision. He struck out 14 to tie a season high. Will Harris (4-1) struck out three in 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.

Willy Adames and Ji-Man Choi each had two-run homers for Tampa Bay. Diego Castillo (2-8) took the loss.

                              TWINS 8, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Jonathan Schoop hit two homers and drove in four runs, Mitch Garver also connected and Minnesota beat Chicago for its fourth straight win.

It was the 13th multihomer game of Schoop's career and fifth this year.

Jose Abreu and Matt Skole each drove a run for Chicago.

Jake Odorizzi (14-6) allowed two runs and five hits in six effective innings. He walked two and struck out eight.

Ross Detwiler (2-4) allowed six hits and five earned runs in four innings, striking out five and walking two in the loss.

                              RANGERS 3, ANGELS 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ariel Jurado pitched six innings of two-hit ball to earn his second victory since June, and Delino DeShields reached over the center field fence to make a spectacular homer-stealing catch as Texas beat Los Angeles.

Nick Solak had an RBI single in the sixth and Isiah Kiner-Falefa added a two-run double in the eighth as the Rangers won the season series 10-9 over their fellow AL West also-rans. Texas took four of six from the Angels in two series over the past 10 days.

After opener Emmanuel Clase barely escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, Jurado (7-10) retired 16 of his first 18 batters, giving up only two hits to Kole Calhoun. Jose Leclerc pitched the ninth for his ninth save, his first since Aug. 11.

Angels rookie Patrick Sandoval pitched five innings of one-hit ball, racking up nine strikeouts.

Miguel Del Pozo (1-1) took the loss.
