      STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

      STREAKING

Sonny Gray, Cincinnati Reds (9-6, 2.92 ERA, $707):
The veteran right-hander is having a career year in Cincy, recording a WHIP of 1.12 and holding opposing hitters to a BA of .206. He's arguably been the best MLB pitcher this month, going 3-0 while allowing just a single run and fanning 34 batters through 24 innings over four starts. The Reds are a perfect 6-0 in his last six starts.

Gray will take to the mound for the Reds in the first game of their four-game series with the Marlins. The Marlins are dead-last in the majors in OPS and will start Pablo Lopez (5-5, 4.23 ERA) who returns from the IL after having not pitched since June 15. The Reds are -177 road faves and the O/U is installed at 7.5.

      SLUMPING

Joe Musgrove, Pittsburgh Pirates (8-12, 4.74 ERA, $-72):
After such a promising start to his season, Musgrove has crashed back to earth. He's had an especially awful August, going 0-3 through four starts with a 7.71 ERA and a WHIP of 1.52.

Today, Musgrove and the Pirates are on the road against in-state rivals Philadelphia. The Pirates are 5-12 in Musgrove's last 17 starts on the road and are 2-8 in their previous 10 games versus the Phillies.

Philadelphia will give the ball to the recently acquired Jason Vargas who is 6-6 with a 3.99 ERA on the season, almost identical to the 3.91 ERA he has recorded through four outings as a Philly.

      3 STRIKES

      BREWERS STILL IN THE RACE

The Brewers are 4.5 games behind St. Louis for the NL Central lead but they'll need to start winning if they want to gain ground. They begin their three-game home set against the Cardinals today with Gio Gonzales on the mound.

Gonzalez is 2-1 with a 3.64 ERA but don't let that record fool you, Gonzalez has gotten a decent workload this season with 12 starts. The Brewers are 9-1 in Gonzalez's last 10 starts at home and are 5-2 versus the Cardinals in Milwaukee this season.

The Cards will start Adam Wainwright who is 3-6 with a 6.64 ERA and .294 BAA on the road. St. Louis is 0-7 in Wainwright's last seven road starts versus a team with a winning record. The Brewers are -136 favourites to win tonight, and are +500 to win the NL Central.

      GOING BACK TO KANSAS CITY

Homer Bailey spent his first 18 starts of the season as a member of the Royals and will make his return to Kansas City today as a member of the Oakland A's. Bailey went from one of the worst teams in the league to a squad that's thick in the middle of the wildcard hunt, and he's managed to have some success with Oakland.

Although Bailey has been demolished in two of his seven starts with the A's, he's been very effective in the other five. Over his last two outings he's allowed nine hits and just one run over 12 2-3 innings versus the Yankees and Giants. Bailey and the A's are -150 favorites today but they could have their work cut out for them against Brad Keller. The Royals right-hander is 4-5 with a 3.60 ERA and an impressive BAA of .207 at home.

      LOOK TO THE OVER

Two of the best Over bets in the majors tangle in Seattle with the Yankees visiting the Mariners. The Mariners are 77-49-5 O/U this season and have hit the Over in five of their last six games.

The Yankees are 39-19-3 O/U in away games and will start J.A. Happ who is 10-8 with a 5.58 ERA. Happ has been especially awful this month, going 2-2 with a 7.78 ERA and a WHIP of 1.53. The Over XX might seem high, especially at pitcher friendly T-Mobile Park, but it still looks like an intriguing play with these two teams. The home side is a -127 favorite.

Rodriguez homers in 11th to lift Phillies over Pirates 6-5
              August 27, 2019
              By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Sean Rodriguez lined a home run leading off the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.

Josh Bell hit a solo homer off Philadelphia closer Hector Neris to tie it at 5 in the ninth after Corey Dickerson hit a two-run shot against his former team in the eighth to give the Phillies a one-run lead.

But after stranding five runners in the ninth and 10th, the Phillies won it when Rodriguez went deep against Michael Feliz (2-4) for his fourth career walk-off homer. Rodriguez was in a 1-for-21 slump before he connected.

Philadelphia moved within a game of the idle Cubs for the second NL wild card.

Bryce Harper homered with two outs in the eighth in his first game back from paternity leave to cut it to 4-3. After J.T. Realmuto's infield single, Dickerson ripped one out to put the Phillies ahead 5-4.

Dickerson, acquired from the Pirates before the July 31 trade deadline, has 21 RBIs in 19 games for the Phillies.

Brad Miller also had a two-run shot for Philadelphia. Mike Morin (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings for the win.

              CARDINALS 12, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Marcell Ozuna's bases-loaded double keyed a six-run second inning and surging St. Louis pounded out a victory over Milwaukee.

The Cardinals, who have won five straight, jumped on starter Gio Gonzalez (2-2) for eight runs in the first two innings en route to their 14th victory in 17 games.

Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong each homered and drove in three runs for St. Louis, which moved a season-high 14 games above .500. The Cardinals extended their NL Central lead to three games over the Cubs. The third-place Brewers dropped 5+ back.

Despite being staked to a 9-1 lead, starter Adam Wainwright lasted just 3 2/3 innings, throwing 90 pitches. He allowed two runs on six hits with three walks.

John Gant (9-0) relieved Wainwright and struck out three in 2 1/3 hitless innings.

              ATHLETICS 19, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Marcus Semien homered, tripled and drove in a career-high seven runs as Oakland set season highs for runs and hits in a rout of Kansas City.

Jurickson Profar, Matt Chapman and Khris Davis also went deep for the Athletics, who are locked in a tight race with Cleveland and Tampa Bay for the two American League wild cards. Josh Phegley drove in three runs and scored three times. Four players had three hits and every starter got at least one as Oakland finished with 22.

Seth Brown singled in the first two at-bats of his big league career, scored twice and drove in a run.

Homer Bailey (12-8) threw six innings, allowing three runs and eight hits, to beat his former team.

Oakland scored five runs in both the second and third, backed by Semien's big hits.

Royals starter Brad Keller (7-14) lasted just 1 1/3 innings, exiting after Semien's bases-loaded triple put Oakland up 5-0.

              ROCKIES 3, BRAVES 1

DENVER (AP) - Ryan McMahon hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift Colorado over Atlanta, ending the Braves' eight-game winning streak.

McMahon drove a fastball from Jerry Blevins just over the scoreboard in right field for the second game-ending homer of his career. Nolan Arenado started the inning with a walk against Anthony Swarzak (1-2).

Jairo Diaz (5-3) blew a save in the ninth but got the win as the Rockies stopped a four-game skid.

It was a makeup from an April 10 game postponed due to inclement weather, forcing Atlanta to crisscross the country.

              REDS 6, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Sonny Gray pitched into the seventh inning, Freddy Galvis drove in four runs and Cincinnati stopped a three-game slide.

Gray (10-6) walked five, but limited Miami to two runs and two hits. The right-hander improved to 4-0 in August, allowing three runs in five starts.

Galvis had three hits and Eugenio Suarez hit his 36th homer for the Reds.

Neil Walker and Jorge Alfaro homered for the Marlins. Pablo Lopez (5-6) allowed four runs in five innings.

              DBACKS 6, GIANTS 4

              PADRES 4, DODGERS 3

              YANKEES 5, MARINERS 4

He knows that and we’ll talk longer than the days of either of our football careers. You know, he seemed happy and that’s all that really matters.”

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

                  13) NFL scouting isn’t easy; front office types make big money, with their decisions largely deciding whether teams win or lose.

With that in mind, here are QB’s taken in the 2012 NFL Draft:
                  Round 1 (1st pick): A. Luck – retired, played 86 games
1 (2): Robert Griffin III- Ravens’ backup
                  1 (8): Ryan Tannehill – Titans’ backup
1 (22): Brandon Weeden – out of football
Round 2 (57): Brock Osweiler – out of football

3 (75): Russell Wilson – Super Bowl champ
3 (88): Nick Foles – Super Bowl MVP
                  4 (102): Kirk Cousins – Vikings’ starter, makes $28M a year

                  Undrafted: Case Keenum— Redskins’ starter
                  Kellen Moore- Cowboys’ offensive coordinator

                  12) Golfers Dustin Johnson/Lucas Glover tied for last at the TOUR Championship Sunday; they both went home wth a check for $400,000. Pretty solid consolation prize.

                  11) Robbie Ray threw five shutout innings in Arizona’s 5-2 win in Milwaukee Sunday; he faced 21 batters, threw 103 pitches, which is an awful lot for a guy who didn’t allow a run. Usually the average pitches per batter is 3.6 or 3.7, not 5.0+.

                  10) Major League ballfields need more 8-foot high outfield fences; the most exciting play in baseball is an outfielder trying to rob the hitter of a home run.

                  9) Off the top of my bald head, I‘m thinking that the Broncos, Colts, Vikings will all be bucking the NFL’s pass-happy trend and will try to run the ball more this season.

Vic Fangio and Mike Zimmer are defensive coaches; defensive guys like to run the ball to protect their defense. Indianapolis is breaking Jacoby Brissett in as the new QB; they’ll try and lighten his load by depending on their improved offensive line and moving the ball on the ground.

                  8) Remember the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and the kid with the Detroit Red Wings’ jersey who was Ferris’ friend? Haven’t seen that actor in 33 years that I know of, but he showed up on my TV in the HBO series Succession, which is about a horrendous bunch of rich people.

He wears a suit now, instead of the Gordie Howe jersey.

                  7) Baseball stuff:
                  — A’s DFA’d OF Nick Martini, brought up OF Seth Brown from AAA.
                  — A’s also put OF Stephen Piscotty (ankle) on the IL.

                  6) Why would FOX hire Urban Meyer as a studio analyst? The man has no personality, seems incapable of humor. He was awful analyzing games on ESPN. Don’t understand this.

                  5) I wonder if dogs enjoy having their pictures taken as much as it looks like they’re enjoying it.

                  4) Kansas City Chiefs signed QB Matt Moore to back up Patrick Mahomes; Chad Henne broke his ankle last weekend, so KC needed a solid backup, and Moore is that.

                  3) Over the last 25 months:
                  — Baltimore Ravens are 12-0 in exhibition games, Atlanta is 0-12.
                  — Ravens are 19-14 in regular season/playoffs; Atlanta is 18-16.

Some teams just try harder to win preseason games.

                  2) We talk about this too much now: “If I ain’t startin’, then I’ll be departin’…..’”

Sophomore QB Jake Haener wasn’t going to be Washington’s starter this year, so he will now transfer. Haener is from Danville, CA; his mom and grandfather both went to college at Washington, but he will leave the Huskies, sit this year out and be eligible to play wherever he goes in both 2020 and 2021. Hard to impress NFL scouts by sitting on the bench.

Washington’s new QB is Jacob Eason, who bolted to Seattle because he didn’t win the starting job at Georgia (sound familiar?)

                  1) Turns out that OJ Simpson is in a fantasy football league, and he drafted Andrew Luck an hour before the retirement story broke. Whoops.

                  • LEADING OFF: Verlander vs Morton, Cubs and Mets get wild
                    August 26, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

                    PAIR OF ACES

Former teammates and 2019 All-Stars square off in a prime pitching matchup when Charlie Morton (13-5, 2.85 ERA) and the Rays face Justin Verlander (15-5, 2.77) in Houston. With the Rays locked in a close wild-card race and the Astros leading the AL West, it's a potential October preview. Verlander, first in the majors with 239 strikeouts, fanned 11 last time out and went the distance on a two-hitter in a 2-1 loss to Detroit. He has seven straight double-digit strikeout games. Morton spent the past two years with the Astros and helped them win the 2017 World Series.

                    WILD IN THE CITI

Kyle Schwarber and the Cubs visit the Mets in the opener of a pivotal three-game series at Citi Field. New York trails Chicago by two games for the second NL wild card. Both teams were off Monday after getting swept at home last weekend - the Mets by Atlanta, the Cubs by Washington. Chicago hopes to have Anthony Rizzo back in the lineup. The first baseman left Saturday's game with tightness in his back and sat out Sunday. Yu Darvish (4-6, 4.43 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Cubs against Marcus Stroman (7-11, 3.18), who exited his previous start with left hamstring tightness.

                    BIG IN JAPAN

Yusei Kikuchi and Masahiro Tanaka face each other for the first time in the majors when the Seattle Mariners host the AL East-leading New York Yankees. The 28-year-old Kikuchi is 5-8 with a 5.19 ERA in his first big league season, but he threw a two-hitter against Toronto in his last start on Aug. 18. He calls the matchup with his Japanese countryman ''a very special game and moment for me.'' The 30-year-old Tanaka has won two of his past three decisions but dropped his last outing against Oakland.

                    THROWING ZEROS

All-Star right-hander Lucas Giolito faces AL Central-leading Minnesota again when the Chicago White Sox host the Twins in the opener of a three-game series. Giolito struck out 12 while tossing a three-hitter in a 4-0 victory at Minnesota last Wednesday. He is 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA in four August starts, striking out 44 batters in 27 innings. Michael Pineda seeks his third straight win for the Twins.

Darvish enters with a 4-6 record, 4.43 ERA and .297 opponent batting average. However, he has 176 strikeouts across 144 1/3 innings, so he still has nasty stuff despite his rather pedestrian numbers in other areas. The veteran righty has actually been better on the road, going 2-3 with a 3.75 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 74 1/3 innings on the road, while posting a 2-3 mark, 5.14 ERA and 1.26 WHIP across 70 innings in the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field.

The Mets lost Stroman early to a tight left hamstring in his most recent start, but he is expected to be fine to start Tuesday. New York is a perfect 4-0 in his four outings since he joined the team at the trade deadline in late July, although he has just one win and three no-decisions. He certainly has enjoyed the run support, as the Mets are averaging 7.0 runs per game in his four outings in blue and orange so far.

The Cubs enter 1-6 across their past seven games against teams with a winning overall record, and they're 0-6 in the past six against National League clubs. They're also just 1-4 in Darvish's past five on the road against winning sides, while going 0-5 in his past five road outings overall. They're also just 1-6 in his past seven when working on five days of rest. The Mets are 11-2 in the past 13 at home vs. RHP, while hitting in 24 of the past 29 against a right-handed starting pitcher. They're also 13-4 in the past 17 at home, and 21-8 across the past 29 games overall.

In this series, Chicago has won four in a row in Queens, while winning 11 of the previous 14 matchups. In addition, the over is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in this series.

                        Looking Ahead

                        Tuesday, Aug. 27

The Indians travel across Lake Erie to meet the Tigers at Comerica Park, and this series hasn't really been close in recent years. Cleveland has won five of the past six on the road, although a visit to Motown might be the elixir to cure their ills. The Indians are 52-17 in the past 69 battles between these American League Central Division foes, while going 25-10 in the past 35 trips to the Motor City. The Tigers are 0-4 in RHP Spencer Turnbull's past four starts against the Indians, too.

The Rays use RHP Charlie Morton against Astros RHP Justin Verlander in a possible pitcher's duel. Tampa streaks in with 11 wins in the past 14 on the road, and they're 4-0 in the past four against teams with a winning overall mark. In addition, they're 10-4 in Morton's past 14 assignments on the road, while going 7-3 in his past 10 starts overall. For the Astros, they're 41-13 in the past 53 at home, and 44-16 in the past 60 at the 'Juice Box', while connecting in 20 of the past 28 against right-handed starting pitchers.

The Astros are also 12-5 in Verlander's past 17 home outings, while connecting in 16 of his past 21 starts while working on five days of rest. They're also 7-2 in the past nine during Game 1 of a new series, too, with Verlander on the bump. Tampa Bay has dominated this series recently, winning six of the past seven. The under is 4-1 in the past five meetings in Houston, while going 36-17-3 in the past 56 meetings overall in this series.

                        Weather Report
The Twins and White Sox will be battling an 11-14 mph wind blowing out to the left-center field power alley at Guaranteed Rate Field on the south side of Chicago. It will be the opposite in the Mile High City, as the Red Sox and Rockies deal with a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing from right field to home plate. The good news is that precipitation won't be a problem at any of the outdoor MLB venues.

                        Wednesday, Aug. 28

LHP James Paxton works for the Yankees against his former team, the Seattle Mariners. They counter with former Yankees prospect LHP Justus Sheffield. The Yankees are 5-0 in the past five road outings against a left-handed starting pitcher, while going 19-7 in their past 26 overall vs. LHP. The Yankees have cashed in five in a row with Paxton on the mound, and they're 9-2 in his past 11 when working on four days of rest. The Yanks enter Tuesday's game with 22 wins in the past 28 games at T-Mobile Park, and they're 40-19 in the past 59 overall in the series.

Twins RHP Jake Odorizzi and White Sox LHP Ross Detwiler will do battle at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chitown on Hump Day. The Twins are 8-2 in the past 10 road outings by Odorizzi, while going 20-8 over his past 28 starts overall. They're also 16-5 in Odorizzi's past 21 starts against teams with a losing overall record and 6-2 in his past eight inside the division. For the White Sox, while they're 9-21 in the past 30 at home against teams with a road winning percentage over .600, they have won four of the past five home outings with Detwiler on the bump. The Twins have won 12 of the past 17 outings in this series, with the under going 4-0 in Odorizzi's past four starts against the Pale Hose.

Rangers RHP Ariel Jurado will do battle with LHP Patrick Sandoval of the Angels in Anaheim. The Rangers have had trouble in Jurado's starts lately, going 1-4 in his past five on the road, 0-5 in his past five starts overall and 1-5 in his past six inside the division. Texas is also just 16-35 in the past 51 road outings against a left-handed starting pitcher. For the Angels, they are looking to maintain their dominance at home against the Rangers, as they entered the series with a 10-2 mark in the past 12 in Anaheim against Texas.

                        Weather Report
For Wednesday's game, the Indians and Tigers will be battling a 12-15 mph wind blowing out to straightaway center field. The Twins and White Sox will also see a 12-15 mph wind blowing out to the left-center field power alley for the second consecutive evening. Also like Tuesday, just two MLB venues will be affected by winds, and none will see precipitation chances over 20 percent.

                                STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                                STREAKING

Patrick Corbin, Washington Nationals (10-5, 3.17 ERA, $269):
The Nationals have been rolling lately going 15-4 over their last 19 games and Corbin has been a big reason. The lefty has given Washington's rotation three very good starters and he's been on fire since the middle of June. In 12 starts since then, Corbin is 5-0 with a 2.12 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 90 strikeouts through 76 1-3 innings.

Corbin gets the start for Washington today as they take on the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles are 1-9 over their last 10 road games and have the second-worst record in the majors. The Nats are -325 favorites but the runline offers a much better payout at -155.

                                SLUMPING

Miles Mikolas, St. Louios Cardinals (7-13, 4.43 ERA, $-336 ):
The Cardinals are coming off a huge road win in Milwaukee to move five games ahead of the Brewers and two and a half games in front of the Cubs for the NL Central lead. But they might have a hard time repeating that success tonight with Mikolas on the mound.

Over his last three starts Mikolas has a 8.44 ERA and 1.56 WHIP while giving up five homers through 16 innings. Mikolas has been awful on the road all season, going 2-8 with a 6.54 ERA and a batting average allowed of .320.
