              STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

              STREAKING

Justin Verlander, Houston Astros (14-4, 2.73 ERA, $613):
Verlander is another one of his patented grooves. The veteran right-hander has pitched to a sparkling 1.44 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP while racking up 43 punchouts over his last four starts. Verlander has a current scoreless inning streak of 13. It’s no surprise the Astros are massive xxxx home faves for their series finale with the Mariners.

              SLUMPING

Kyle Freeland, Colorado Rockies (2-9, 7.48 ERA, $-589):
We were really hoping Freeland was going to stay out of this category for a little longer than that. However, he followed up his impressive six innings of four-hit shutout ball at Washington with another dud. T

he Dodgers lit Freeland up for seven runs on seven hits in just 3.2 innings, bringing his ERA up to a whopping 10.58 over his last six starts and has a 2.07 WHIP to go along with it. Despite Freeland’s struggles, the Rockies are still -130 home favorites against the Giants. However, there is a nice high total of 13.5.

              3 STRIKES

              JR. JAYS PAYS

The Blue Jays’ mini five game winning streak came to an end last night, but expect Toronto to continue to have value in the final two months of the season. With Bo Bichette getting called up last week, the Jays core of elite prospects are now all in the Bigs and they are clearly playing much better. Heck, they have scored the eighth most runs since the All-Star break. This will not your typical rebuilding team down the stretch. They are going to keep pushing each other to get better and will have a lot of value, especially against lesser opponents. Speaking of which, the Jays close out their series with the Orioles Sunday and we them on the runline.

              YU GOTTA BELIEVE

Much has been made about Yu Darvish’s struggles at Wrigley Field since signing with the Cubs, but things may be turning around for the Japanese right-hander in that department. Darvish has actually pitched 12 consecutive scoreless innings at home, allowing just four hits over that span. Overall Darvish is in a bit of a groove as well, recording a quality start in three of his past four outings. He’ll look to keep that going Sunday against the visiting Brewers.

Darvish pitched well against the Brewers last year, allowing just one run on five hits in 12 innings over two starts. Mix in the fact the Brewers struggle to hit right-handers on the road and the Cubs have had their fair share of troubles hitting the ball since the All-Star break, take a hard look at the Under.

              A SNAKE IN THE GRASS

Patrick Corbin makes his return to the desert Sunday after leaving the Diamondbacks this offseason to sign a 6-year $140 million dollar deal to join the Nationals. This will be his first start against his former team, and you can bet he’ll want to show them what they’re missing out on. Corbin is also dealing right now, pitching to a 1.76 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP over his last 12 starts. Even though the Nats got knocked around last night we like the value with the road team again Sunday afternoon.

                  • Weekend Watch

                    Sunday, Aug. 4

The New York Mets rallied past Pittsburgh 7-5 on Saturday for a comeback victory as they scored six of their runs in the last three frames. The 'over' has now connected in the first two games of this series as the Pirates doubled-up New York 8-4 on Friday. Sunday's game will be the rubber match between the pair and the Mets hope to remain in the hunt for the National League wild-card hunt.

Many talking heads expected the Mets to deal RHP Noah Syndergaard at the July 31 trade deadline, but he remains in blue and orange. He'll work in the Steel City against the Pittsburgh Pirates, who have yet to announce a starter. As far as Thor is concerned, he has actually been slightly more effective on the road this season, going 2-2 with a 3.78 ERA with just five homers allowed across 64 1/3 innings across 10 starts. He also enjoys pitching during the daytime, posting a 2.70 ERA with a sparkling .187 opponent batting average across 40 innings in six starts, including his only complete game. He hasn't faced the Pirates yet this season, Syndergaard is 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA with a .218 opponent batting average in two outings against the Bucs since the start of the 2016 campaign.

San Francisco and Colorado will also meet in a rubber match on Sunday, this contest taking place at Coors Field. The first two games in this series were decided by one run as the Rockies took a 5-4 decision on Friday before the Giants escaped with a 6-5 victory on Saturday. The opener went 'under' the total and last night's game pushed at 11 runs.

Giants RHP Tyler Beede will tangle with LHP Kyle Freeland in the series finale on Sunday afternoon in Denver. Freeland has been a nightmare this season, going 2-9 with a 7.48 ERA and 1.64 WHIP across 16 starts, which is poor, even by Coors Field standards. He has also posted a .295 opponent batting average with 20 homers and 32 walks allowed across just 77 innings. At Coors, he is even worse, going 1-4 with a 10.31 ERA and .346 OBA with 12 bombs served up in just 36 2/3 innings. The Giants tagged him for three earned runs across five innings in a no-decision on May 9 in a 12-11 victory, and three earned runs and nine hits allowed in five innings in a loss on April 13.

As far as Beede is concerned, he is 3-5 with a 5.01 ERA while turning in a 1.54 WHIP and .270 opponent batting average in 18 starts and three relief appearances, while posting a 5.73 ERA with eight homers across 44 innings on the road. He faced the Rockies in that 12-11 game on May 9, allowing two earned runs, three hits and three walks in two innings of relief. Across his past two outings, he has allowed four earned runs and 10 hits in each of his past two starts, going 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA.

The Red Sox and Yankees face each other on Sunday Night Baseball this evening and New York is on the verge of a four-game sweep. Boston was in the same exact position as the Yankees last Sunday as it had a chance to capture a 4-0 sweep at Fenway Park but New York avoided the broom and won 9-5.

Since that loss, Boston has now dropped seven straight games. This is the longest losing streak for the franchise since July 2015 when the club lost eight consecutive games. The Red Sox are 5 1/2 games out of the wild-card race and 13 1/2 behind New York for the American League East.
The finale on Sunday will feature two pitchers returning from the paternity list as the Red Sox's LHP David Price meets New York's LHP JA Happ from the Bronx.

Boston has actually lost each of Price's past four outings, and he is 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA across 19 1/3 innings. He has faced the Yankees just once this season, allowing two earned runs, six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in a 99-pitch effort over 6 1/3 innings in a victory in the Bronx back on June 2.

For Happ, he is two games over .500 at 8-6, but he has a mediore 1.34 WHIP and a subpar 5.19 ERA through 21 starts this season with the opponent hitting .276 against him. He is 3-0 with a 4.62 ERA in nine outings on the road with a .238 opponent batting average, but home is where the problems have been. He is 5-6 with a 5.64 ERA and .305 opponent batting average in 60 2/3 innings across 12 outings. Happ has fared well against the Red Sox, however, going 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in two outings over 11 1/3 innings, with the BoSox hitting just .220 against him.

                      • Bieber pitches Indians past Angels 6-2
                        August 4, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) Shane Bieber became the first pitcher this season to throw three complete games, leading the Cleveland Indians over the Los Angeles Angels 6-2 Sunday for a three-game sweep.

Bieber (11-4) allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked none. Bieber, the All-Star Game MVP, is 9-2 in his last 15 starts.

Cleveland is 37-15 since June 4, the best record in the major leagues in that span. After trailing by as many as 11+ games in early June, the Indians started Sunday three games back of AL Central-leading Minnesota.

Jason Kipnis, Francisco Lindor and rookie Oscar Mercado homered off Jaime Barria (4-5), who gave up three runs in 3 2/3 innings. Barria is 2-4 with a 10.13 ERA on the road.

Kole Calhoun homered and Albert Pujols had an RBI single for Los Angeles, which lost its fourth straight.

                        ASTROS 3, MARINERS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Justin Verlander struck out 10 in another dominant Houston pitching performance, and the Astros completed a three-game sweep.

A day after Astros newcomer Aaron Sanchez and three relievers combined on a no-hitter, Verlander (15-4) took over the major league wins lead and left with an AL-best 2.68 ERA.

Roberto Osuna worked the ninth for his 25th save. The victory improved Houston to 12-1 against Seattle this season and 38-12 against the AL West.

Kyle Seager homered for Seattle. Tommy Milone (1-6) struck out seven while pitching five innings of two-run ball.

                        METS 13, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Mets star Robinson Cano appears headed back to the injured list after straining his left hamstring, an injury that overshadowed Noah Syndergaard's sparkling outing.

Cano singled in the fourth inning for his third hit of the game and ninth hit in his last 15 at-bats. He pulled up after rounding first and grabbed at the back of his leg.

Syndergaard (8-5) allowed three hits, singled twice and pitched shutout ball into the seventh.

New York won for the ninth time in 10 games.

Pittsburgh's Joe Musgrove (8-10) gave up eight runs and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings.

                        ATHLETICS 4, CARDINALS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Tanner Roark pitched five innings to get the win in his Oakland debut.

Jurickson Profar connected for his 15th homer as the A's won for the sixth time in seven games. Dustin Garneau had two hits and two RBIs after he was claimed off waivers Saturday.

St. Louis fell 1+ games back of NL Central-leading Chicago, which swept Milwaukee with a 7-2 victory.

Paul DeJong homered for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright (7-8) got the loss.

Roark (7-7) allowed one run and four hits in his first start since he was acquired in a trade with Cincinnati. Liam Hendriks retired three batters for his 11th save.

                        DODGERS 11, PADRES 10

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Max Muncy's fourth hit was a game-ending, two-run double, and the Dodgers rallied from a late three-run deficit for a wild victory.

Muncy had a homer and two doubles while driving in three runs. Four Dodgers added two RBIs apiece as the NL West leaders took three of four from San Diego with a huge comeback at Chavez Ravine.

Pedro Baez (6-2) pitched the ninth for the win.

Eric Hosmer hit a grand slam and drove in five runs for San Diego. Kirby Yates (0-3) got the loss.

                        RAYS 7, MARLINS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Yonny Chirinos allowed one run in five innings before leaving with a hand injury, and Tampa Bay matched its longest winning streak this season at six games.

Chirinos (9-5) gave up two hits but was pulled after 63 pitches due to right middle finger inflammation. Diego Castillo, Colin Poche and Andrew Kittredge finished a six-hitter.

Mike Brosseau and Jesus Aguilar homered for the Rays, who also won six in a row from May 25-30.

Brian Anderson connected for the Marlins, who have lost four of five. Caleb Smith (7-5) gave up three runs - one earned - six hits and in five innings.

                        TWINS 3, ROYALS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Devin Smeltzer pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning for his first major league win, and Minnesota finished off a three-game sweep.

Jason Castro homered and Eddie Rosario drove in two runs for the Twins, who maintained their three-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central.

Smeltzer (1-1) struck out four and walked one in his third career start. Sergio Romo pitched a scoreless eighth, and Taylor Rogers finished the two-hitter for his 17th save in 23 chances.

Kansas City's Brad Keller (7-11) permitted two runs in seven innings.

                        ROCKIES 6, GIANTS 2

DENVER (AP) - Kyle Freeland earned his first win in nearly four months and Nolan Arenado homered twice for Colorado.

Trevor Story homered for the fifth straight game against San Francisco. It's tied for the longest home run streak against an opponent in Rockies history.

Donovan Solano went deep twice for the Giants, the first to lead off the game and again in the third inning off Freeland (3-9). He nearly had a third when he drove a ball to the wall in right in the fifth inning that was caught.

Freeland, who was 17-7 with a 2.85 ERA last year, hadn't won since beating Philadelphia on April 18.

San Francisco's Tyler Beede (3-6) gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings.

                        CUBS 7, BREWERS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Jason Heyward drove in three runs, Yu Darvish pitched five effective innings and the Cubs finished a three-game sweep.

Heyward and Kyle Schwarber homered as the NL Central leaders won for the 11th time in 13 games at Wrigley Field.

Christian Yelich hit his major league-best 37th homer for Milwaukee, which has dropped four straight and six of seven.

Milwaukee rookie Trent Grisham picked up his first major league hit in the first and his first homer in the eighth. He went 3 for 4 in his third big league game.

Darvish (4-5) allowed one run and five hits, struck out eight and walked none. He retired 10 straight batters at one point.

Milwaukee starter Adrian Houser (4-5) yielded four runs and nine hits in five innings.

                        DIAMONDBACKS 7, NATIONALS 5

PHOENIX (AP) - Ketel Marte hit an inside-the-park home run off former Arizona ace Patrick Corbin, and Adam Jones drove in four runs for the Diamondbacks.

Marte's third-inning line drive got by diving center fielder Gerardo Parra and rolled to the wall, near the 413-foot mark in left-center. Marte beat a high throw to home plate, eluding the tag by catcher Yan Gomes, for a solo homer and a 4-2 lead.

Jones broke a 5-all tie with a two-run single off Wander Suero (3-6) with two outs in the seventh.

Yoshihisa Hirano (4-5) earned the win in relief, and Archie Bradley pitched two innings for his second save.

                        WHITE SOX 10, PHILLIES 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Leury Garcia hit a grand slam and Eloy Jimenez added a three-run shot, powering the White Sox to the victory.

The Phillies are still in the NL wild-card hunt but lost two of three at home to the below-.500 White Sox. Not even appearances by Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Pedro Martinez and the rest of the 2009 NL champions could inspire the Phillies and they trailed all the way against Reynaldo Lopez (6-9) and three relievers.

Tim Anderson also homered for Chicago, and Ryan Goins had two hits and scored twice.

Philadelphia left-hander Drew Smyly (2-6) permitted five runs in five innings.

                        REDS 6, BRAVES 4, 10 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Tucker Barnhart hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the 10th inning off new Atlanta closer Shane Greene.

A day after blowing a save chance in his Braves debut, Greene (0-1) gave up four hits and three runs in one inning.

Atlanta star Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth off Amir Garrett, thumping his chest and yelling at the Braves' dugout as he flung his bat while leaving the batter's box. Acuna hit a 10th-inning single that lifted Atlanta to a 5-4 win on Saturday night.

Robert Stephenson (3-2) got the win. David Hernandez gave up a two-out homer to Tyler Flowers in the 10th before retiring Freddie Freeman for his second save.

                        RANGERS 9, TIGERS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Willie Calhoun hit a tiebreaking three-run triple in the seventh inning, helping the Rangers finish a three-game sweep.

Calhoun pulled a 2-0 pitch from Nick Ramirez just inside the right-field line and into the corner. Calhoun later scored on a wild pitch.

Jose Cisnero (0-3) walked the first two batters of the seventh and was replaced by Ramirez with two outs.

Rafael Montero (1-0) closed with 2 1/3 scoreless innings for his first major league win since September 2017 with the New York Mets. Texas' four-game win streak is its longest since a six-game streak in late June.

                        ORIOLES 6, BLUE JAYS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Trey Mancini drove in two runs and Baltimore took advantage of a wild major league debut by Toronto reliever Yennsy Diaz.

Mancini has 15 RBIs in 13 games against Toronto this season.

The Orioles won a mistake-prone game with wild pitches, misplayed balls, costly walks and baserunning errors.

Tom Eshelman (1-2) earned his first major league win after allowing four runs and eight hits over five innings. Shawn Armstrong picked up his fourth save.

Rookies Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio homered for Toronto, and Randal Grichuk tied a career high with four hits. Sean Reid-Foley (1-2) allowed four runs, one earned, and four hits in four innings.

                        YANKEES 7, RED SOX 4

Monday’s Den: NFL knowledge on a summer day…….

                            13) Since 1992, Detroit Lions are 0-8 in playoff games; but from 2014-17, Lions were 36-28 in regular season, their best regular season run since a 29-19 run from 1993-95, when they went 0-3 in playoffs those years under Wayne Fontes.

But the Lions fired Jim Caldwell after going 9-7 in 2017, and went 6-10 last year, scoring 86 fewer points (5.38 ppg) than the year before, under new coach Matt Patricia. Go figure.

Just because you know Tom Brady doesn’t make you head coaching material.

                            12) Arizona Cardinals have a rookie QB and a rookie head coach, a coach who got fired LY by Texas Tech after going 35-40 in six seasons, 16-21 the last three years. He was 1-2 in bowls.

Kliff Kingsbury is Arizona’s third HC in three years; not sure why they canned Brice Arians, but it was a big mistake. Now they’ve gambled on Kingsbury, who threw two passes (1-2 for 17 yards) in his only NFL game as a player, for the 2005 Jets.

Kyler Murray threw 42 TD passes in his only year as Oklahoma’s QB; he turned down a baseball contract from the A’s, and now he will be in the national spotlight- his first game is at home against Matt Patricia’s Lions, who are 6-2 in last eight season openers, but lost 48-17 to the Jets in Patricia’s first season opener.

                            11) Not to be a pessimist, but Arizona’s backup QB’s are Brett Hundley (3-6 as a starter for the ’17 Packers), Chad Kanoff (Princeton alum who was on Arizona’s practice squad LY) and Drew Anderson, who threw 20 TD’s with 15 INT’s for I-AA Murray State last year.

Not exactly a stellar group of backups; if Murray stinks or he gets hurt, they’re staring another 3-13 season in the face.

                            10) Joe Flacco will be Denver’s QB this year, their 8th different #1 QB in the last 13 years.

Broncos won the Super Bowl four years ago, but haven’t been back to the playoffs; they went 11-21 the last two years, their first consecutive losing seasons since 1971-72.

                            9) Oakland Raiders have had one winning season the last 16 years; they went 12-4 in 2016 thanks in large part to a +16 turnover ratio, but Derek Carr got hurt at the end of the regular season, and backup Connor Cook was overmatched in 27-14 loss to Houston in the playoffs, which is Cook’s only NFL appearance.

Raiders are moving to Las Vegas next year; they’re 10-22 since that playoff loss, and Gruden has nine years left on his $10M a year deal. They open the season with divisional home games with Denver, Kansas City, then don’t play at home again until November.

                            8) Over last 13 years, Washington Redskins are 0-3 in playoff games; QB Alex Smith is out with a broken leg, so this year they’ll have their 11th different starting QB the last 20 years. Keep in mind that New England has had one starting QB since midway thru 2001, except for the year Brady got hurt.

Case Keenum is playing for his 4th team in four years; he went 21-18 the last three years, but now he is probably the placeholder for yet another rookie QB, Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State.

Keenum will be able to write a hell of a book someday, and after this year he’ll have made $16M the last four years, but his wife is probably sick of packing.

                            7) Eagles were -6 in turnovers LY after going +17 in Doug Pederson’s first two years as Philly’s coach; they still went 9-7, and upset the Bears in a playoff game, but now Nick Foles is a Jaguar and the pressure is squarely on Carson Wentz, who is 23-17 as a starter in his first three years as the Eagles’ QB, but it was Foles who orchestrated the Super Bowl run.

Under Pederson, favorites are 7-2 vs spread in Philly’s divisional road games, but 5-10 in their non-divisional games. Eagles are 4-2 as a home underdog under Pederson, after going 0-8 from 2010-15.

                            6) Deshaun Watson threw for 4,165 yards and 26 TD’s LY, 2nd most TD’s in Texan history (Matt Schaub threw 29 in 2009); Houston was 11-5, after starting season 0-3- they were +15 in TO’s, after going -12 the year before, when Watson got hurt.

Under Bill O’Brien, Texans are 42-38 in regular season, 1-3 in playoff games; they’re 18-11-1 as a home favorite, 12-5 outside their division, 6-6-1 vs AFC South rivals.

In O’Brien’s first four years, he had a different QB every year (Fitzpatrick, Hoyer, Osweiler, Watson), so at least now they’re settled at QB, which is no small thing.

                            5) New Orleans Saints went 24-8 the last two years, with dramatic playoff losses to Vikings, Rams; Drew Brees will be 41 in January- he threw 184 fewer passes LY than he did in 2016, as Sean Payton takes heat off him by running ball more.

Last year, New Orleans held six of its last eight regular season opponents to 17 or fewer points, as they became less free-wheeling while going 13-3. Last three years, Saints are 17-7 vs spread on road; since 2014, they’re 12-20-1 vs spread as a home favorite.

Last five years, over is 26-14 in regular season games in the Superdome.

                            4) Miami Dolphins are on their 7th head coach since 2004; they’ve played in one playoff game since 2002- their last playoff win was in 2000, when Dave Wannstedt was their coach. Now the Dolphins’ coach is Brian Flores, another guy who became a head coach because he knows Tom Brady.

Who will be the QB, much-travelled Ryan Fitzpatrick, or 2nd-year guy Josh Rosen, who went 3-10 LY with 11 TD’s, 14 INT’s for a dysfunctional Cardinal offense. Fitzpatrick will be the first NFL QB to throw a pass for eight different teams- he is 50-75-1 as an NFL starter, wth his only winning season a 10-6 mark for the ’15 Jets.

Miami plays the Jets in Weeks 9,14; their old coach Adam Gase was hired by Gang Green after the Dolphins fired him. Gase went 23-25 in three years with Miami.

                            3) Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl seven years ago, are 49-47 since then, 1-2 in playoff games; Joe Flacco is in Denver after 11 years as a Raven, and mobile Lamar Jackson is in charge of running the Baltimore offense. Jackson was 6-1 as a starter LY (Flacco was 4-5); he completed only 58.2% of his passes but ran the ball for 695 yards, five TD’s.

Ravens were -3 in turnovers LY after going +22 the previous two years; last three years, they’re 2-8-1 vs spread as a non-divisional road underdog.

With a young QB like Jackson, should the Ravens’ QB coach be a guy who played QB in the NFL and can be a mentor? Baltimore’s QB coach is a guy who was a D-3 receiver in college, not sure how much that helps Jackson, and Jackson’s development is essential for the Ravens- this backup Robert Griffin III has a broken thumb.

                            2) In four years under Dan Quinn, underdogs are 21-11 vs spread in Falcon home games; Atlanta is 3-0 as a home underdog, 11-18 as a favorite. Falcons slipped to 7-9 LY after going 21-11 the previous two years (3-2 in playoff games). Home teams covered 10 of their last 12 divisional games.

Falcons don’t play a game outdoors this season until November 17 in Charlotte; their first five road games are all in domes. Last two years, Atlanta is 4-12 vs spread on the road.

Mike Smith was 56-24 in his first five years as Falcons’ coach, but after 4-12/6-10 years, he was told to take a hike after the ’14 season. Does Quinn need a winning season to keep his job? He went 7-9 LY, after a 29-19 run succeeding Smith.

                            1) Minnesota will have same QB starting in consecutive years for the first time since 2014-15, but Kirk Cousins has a 34-37-2 career record with only one playoff game, a 35-18 loss to Green Bay in 2015. Cousins makes $28M a year, now he needs to play like it.

Last year’s offensive line coach passed away just before training camp, which was a tragedy with lasting effects. Now Gary Kubiak is in Minnesota and the OL coach was in Denver for 15 years. Zimmer is a defensive coach; Vikings are going to run the ball to protect their defense.

In five years under Zimmer, Minnesota is 22-10-1 as a home favorite, 10-6 as a road favorite, 20-16 as an underdog. He’s been a profitable coach to back.

                            • LEADING OFF: Morton completes father/son loop, Canó injured
                              August 4, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

                              SOUNDS FAMILIAR

Charlie Morton is set to start for Tampa Bay against prized rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays. In Morton's big league debut in 2008 with Atlanta, he faced Guerrero's father - future Hall of Famer Vlad, then with the Angels.

''That's kind of cool,'' Morton said.

The senior Guerrero went 1 for 3 against Morton on that day. Morton (12-3, 2.78 ERA) takes on Toronto at Tropicana Field.

                              SLIDING AWAY

The Boston Red Sox try to stop their biggest slide in four years when they begin a seven-game homestand Monday night against Kansas City. The reigning World Series champions lost 7-4 to the New York Yankees on Sunday night, completing a four-game sweep and running their losing streak to eight games. It's the longest skid for Boston since it dropped eight in a row in July 2015. The Red Sox (59-55) are a whopping 14 1/2 games back of the AL East-leading Yankees, and they also have some work to do to get into position for a wild card. Rick Porcello pitches in the series opener against Kansas City, and Mike Montgomery starts for the Royals.

                              CHECK HIM

The Mets will see how second baseman Robinson Cano is feeling, a day after he limped off the field in Pittsburgh with a strained left hamstring.

Cano lined his third hit of the game - and ninth hit in his last 15 at-bats - but pulled up after rounding first and grabbed at the back of his leg. He was tagged out.

In his first season with the Mets after being acquired from Seattle, the 36-year-old was limited to one game between May 22 and June 16 because of a strained left quadriceps. He is hitting .252 with 10 homers and 32 RBIs.

The Mets host Miami in a doubleheader, looking to sweep and go over .500.

Cubs starters have gone six straight games without issuing a walk, which the team says is its longest such streak since at least 1905.

''It's really fun to watch when you make the other team earn a trip down to first base,'' manager Joe Maddon said.

Kyle Hendricks (8-8, 3.07 ERA) tries to keep the string going when he starts at Wrigley Field against Oakland.

                              HE'LL BE ON THE HILL

Vince Velasquez (3-6, 4.40 ERA) pitches for the Phillies when they open a three-game set at Arizona in a matchup of wild-card contenders.

The right-hander was impressive in his last game - as a left fielder. When Philadelphia went into the 14th inning against the White Sox, Velasquez was inserted into the outfield. He threw out one runner at the plate, almost got another and made a diving catch.

                              HE'S BACK

The Indians will promote righty Aaron Civale from Triple-A Columbus to pitch at home against Texas. His lone big league appearance came on June 22, when he pitched six scoreless innings in a 2-0 win over Detroit.

                                Boston L Party

The Boston Red Sox have dropped eight straight game, slipping to just four games over .500 at 59-55 following a four-game sweep at the hands of the hated New York Yankees. They're now 14 1/2 games back of first place in the AL East, sitting in third place, while actually being closer to the fourth-place Toronto Blue Jays than the first-place Yankees. In addition, they have allowed 596 runs, which is third-most in the AL behind only the last-place Baltimore Orioles and last-place Seattle Mariners. Boston owns a plus-56 run differential still, but that has shrunk substantially from a plus-82 when the skid began on July 27.

Boston returns home for a much-needed series against the Kansas City Royals, a team which has dropped six straight outings. The Royals also enter just 1-6 in their past seven against right-handed starting pitcher, as they try and solve RHP Rick Porcello. K.C. is also a dismal 15-45 across the past 60 on the road against righties, while going 15-43 across the past 58 against AL East teams, and 18-51 in the previous 69 road games against winning teams. For the Red Sox, Porcello might be the best thing going for them on the hill, as they're 4-1 in his previous five outings, and 5-0 in his past five against AL Central foes.

If you're a total player, you'll likely be playing the over. The over is 7-2 in the past nine overall for the Royals, 5-1 in their past six against winning teams, 5-1 in the past six against teams from the AL East while going 6-1 in the past seven road outings against a team with a losing home mark. They're also 6-2 in the past eight following a loss.

For the Red Sox, the over has connected in 24 of their past 33 games overall, while hitting in 19 of the past 26 after a loss. The over is also 5-1 in the past six home games vs. LHP, while going 6-1 in the past seven overall against southpaws. The over is also 6-0 in Porcello's past six starts overall, while connecting four straight home outings and 20 of his past 27 against AL Central foes. The over is also 7-3 in his past 10 starts during Game 1 of a series, and 19-7-1 in his previous 27 against teams with a losing overall mark. The Red Sox have beaten the Royals seven straight times, and the over is 7-3-2 in the past 12 meetings in this series, while going 20-7-3 in the past 30 meetings overall.
