      — Rays 9, Red Sox 4— Tampa Bay sweeps three games in Fenway.

      — Former Carolina Panthers’ C Ryan Kalil un-retired and signed on with the Jets.

      — Indians’ manager Terry Francona underwent unexpected eye surgery Thursday; he was at the ballpark Thursday night, but didn’t manage the game. We wish him well.

      — If the playoffs started today (they do not):

      NL: Braves-Cardinals-Dodgers. Wild Card: Cubs-Nationals

AL: New York-Twins-Astros. Wild Card: Rays-Indians

      Quote of the Day
“Everything we did was so inorganic and unsustainable and, frankly, not fun. I was miserable. Literally the moment we won the championship I knew I was gonna leave. There was no way I was gonna stay for any amount of money.”
New Orleans Pelican GM David Griffin, on his time in Cleveland

      Friday’s quiz
Bill Murray, Scarlett Johanssen starred in a 2003 movie Lost in Translation; where does the movie take place?

      Thursday’s quiz
SF Giants have won three World Series in this decade; they beat Rangers, Royals, Tigers.

      Wednesday’s quiz
New Hampshire is known as the Granite State.

      ***************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

      13) Looking at Week 1 of the NFL which is only five weeks away, there are four games with a spread of 7+ points. The question occurred to me, how do favorites of 7+ points do in Week 1 of the NFL? So I looked it up.

Last six years, 16 teams have been favored by 7+ points in Week 1; those teams went 4-11-1 vs spread. Last three years, Week 1 favorites of 7+ are just 6-4 SU.

Since 2009, in Week 1 games with a spread of 7+ points, over is 18-12-1.

      12) Week 1 favorites of 7+ points this year:
      — Eagles (-9) vs Washington
      — Seahawks (-9.5) vs Cincinnati
      — Cowboys (-7.5) vs NY Giants
      — Saints (-7) vs Houston

      11) Over last 20 years, only five teams haven’t been a Week 1 favorite of 7+ points:
      Bengals, Browns, Chiefs, Giants, 49ers.

      10) New England has been a Week 1 favorite of 7+ points eight times since 2005; they’re 2-5-1 vs spread in those games. Patriots are -6 vs Pittsburgh in Week 1 this year.

      9) Day after the trade deadline, baseball GM’s who made trades the day before go on their local TV broadcasts and get patted on the back for the great deals he made the day before.

On Miami telecasts, one of the worst-run franchises in the sport, they tout the new kids in the organization, even the ones hitting .204 and .206 in the minors. Oy.

      8) Marlins 5, Twins 4 (12)— Miami tied game with three runs in 9th, won it in the 12th.

      7) Baseball stuff:
      — Texas DFA’d IF Asdrubel Cabrera and C Tim Federowicz.

      6) Six players and both managers got suspended after the Pirates-Reds fracas the other night; Keone Kale got 10 games, Amir Garrett 8 games. Cincy skipper David Bell got six games, Clint Hurdle got two.

According to Hall of Fame writer Jayson Stark, this is the most players suspended for one fight since a 2013 incident involving Ian Kennedy/Zack Greinke.

      5) Longtime kicker Phil Dawson retired from the NFL this week, after a 20-year career where he kicked 441 FG’s, 518 PAT’s- he even punted nine times.

      4) White Sox P Lucas Giolito is from a family of actors; his grandfather appeared in five episodes of Seinfeld, playing Susan Ross’ father. His mother Lindsay Frost lists 49 TV and movie credits.

      3) The other night, I stumble upon this old movie, Guilty As Sin on cable late at night while I’m writing; hard to take a movie real serious when the first character you see in the movie is a judge being played by the guy who was Morty in Meatballs.

Movie had Jack Warden and Rebecca DeMornay in it, though, so it wasn’t all bad.

      2) San Francisco Giants have won three World Series in this decade; surprising thing is who they beat in those series, the Rangers, Tigers, Royals.

      1) One bettor at the Westgate in Las Vegas placed a $100,500 wager on the 76ers to make the playoffs this coming season at -$5,000 odds; the bet would win $2,010.

Same guy made/won a similar bet on Golden State last season.

        • Paxton gets rematch, May Day in LA
          August 1, 2019
          By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

          NO REINFORCEMENTS

The Yankees came up short trying to acquire pitching help at the trade deadline, and that's putting more pressure on James Paxton to shake off a rough stretch. The big left-hander is 0-3 with a 6.67 ERA in his past six starts, including a loss at Fenway Park last week when he allowed seven runs in four innings. Paxton (5-6, 4.72) faces the Red Sox again in the opener of a four-game home series. He'll oppose right-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (13-4, 4.13).

          MAY DAY

Top Dodgers pitching prospect Dustin May is expected to make his major league debut against San Diego. The 21-year-old right-hander is nicknamed Gingergaard because his flowing red hair and big-time fastball remind some of Mets ace Noah Syndergaard. May was 6-5 with a 3.38 ERA over 20 starts between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

          ENJOY IT

The Tampa Bay Rays will have a rare Friday off before starting a two-game series against Miami on Saturday at Tropicana Field. It will mark the first time in franchise history Tampa Bay has a scheduled idle Friday past the opening week of April.

''That's odd. I don't think I've ever have had a Friday off,'' Rays manager Kevin Cash said before Thursday night's game at Boston.

Under scheduling guidelines, MLB teams have some leeway regarding a day off before or after a two-game series.

          DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS

Madison Bumgarner, who had been the subject of trade speculation, starts for the Giants when they open a series at Coors Field. San Francisco and Colorado are coming off completely opposite performances last month. The Giants began July at 36-47, but finished the month at 55-53. They became the first major league team to start July at least 10 games under .500 and end with a winning mark. The Rockies, meanwhile, were 44-40 heading into July before going 6-19 - that was the worst showing by any team that went into July with a winning record since the 1888 Boston Beaneaters were 5-17.

          PHILLING UP

Jason Vargas (6-5, 4.01 ERA) makes his debut with the Phillies after being acquired this week from the Mets. The 36-year-old lefty has won three straight starts going into this outing in Philadelphia against the White Sox.

Hottest team: Mets (7-0 last seven)

If there is one thing everybody can agree on that has followed Major League Baseball this season is the Mets are the hardest team to figure out. New York went on a dreadful 3-11 run from late June through mid-July, but the Mets have come back to life of late by winning 13 of the past 17 games, including seven straight victories. The Mets are fresh off back-to-back sweeps of the Pirates and White Sox, while limiting Chicago to four runs in three wins.

New York remains two games under the .500 mark, but the Mets have crept to within four games of the second Wild Card spot in the National League. The Mets continue their road trip in Pittsburgh to face the Pirates for the second consecutive weekend. Steven Matz tossed a complete game shutout against the Pirates last Saturday to improve to 4-0 at home, but the southpaw owns a 2-6 mark away from Citi Field as he makes the start on Friday at PNC Park.

Coldest team: Rockies (4-13 last 17)

The free-fall to the bottom of the NL West continues for Colorado after losing the final two games of its home series to Los Angeles. The Rockies held the Dodgers scoreless for eight innings on Wednesday before allowing L.A. to score five runs in a 5-1 victory. Colorado’s offense was limited to fewer than four runs for the fourth time in five games, while losing 12 straight games when scoring five or fewer runs.

The Rockies were swept by the Giants at Coors Field two weeks ago in a four-game series as San Francisco invades Colorado again this weekend. Peter Lambert won his first two starts of his big league career back in June, but the Rockies’ right-hander is winless in his past seven outings. Lambert pitched well against San Francisco back on July 16 by allowing two earned runs in six innings of work, but the Giants won in extra innings, 8-4.

Hottest pitcher: Mike Clevinger, Indians (5-2, 3.28 ERA)

The most reliable pitcher currently in the Cleveland rotation following the trade of Trevor Bauer to Cincinnati is Clevinger, who has won three straight starts. Since getting tagged for seven runs against the Orioles in a 13-0 loss on June 28, Clevinger has allowed six runs in the past five starts, although the last three wins have come against the Tigers, Royals, and Blue Jays. The Indians have compiled a 3-1 record in four starts at Progressive Field, while striking out double-digit batters in three of those outings as the Tribe welcome in the Angels.

Coldest pitcher: Glenn Sparkman, Royals (3-7, 5.25 ERA)

The Kansas City rotation has been thin all season as Sparkman has given up four runs or more in four of his past five starts with the Royals going 1-4 in that span. Since blanking the White Sox on July 16, Sparkman lost twice to the Indians, while yielding 13 runs and five home runs. Sparkman fared well against Minnesota the last time he faced them in late June by tossing seven innings in a 4-1 win as a +175 underdog, as he takes the mound at Target Field as a +210 ‘dog on Friday.

Biggest OVER run: Orioles (6-1 last seven)

Baltimore returned home from a successful road trip on Thursday only to get blown out by a streaking Toronto squad, 11-2. The O’s allowed more than five runs for the seventh time in the past eight games, while cashing the OVER for the fourth time in the last five contests with a total of 10 or more. The Orioles continue their series with the Blue Jays on Friday as Aaron Brooks is scheduled to make the start. Brooks allowed five earned runs in each of his last two outings, while his offense aided him with early run support in a 9-8 victory over the Angels his past start to easily cash the OVER of 10 ½.

Biggest UNDER run: Brewers (6-1 last seven)

The race atop the NL Central continues to heat up after the Cardinals captured two of three from the Cubs to re-take a one-game advantage for first place. Chicago returns home to host Milwaukee for a Friday afternoon affair at Wrigley Field as the Brewers have scored four or fewer runs in four consecutive games. The Brewers dropped two of three at Oakland, capped off by Thursday’s come-from-ahead loss to the A’s after blowing a late 3-1 lead in a 5-3 defeat. The game remained UNDER the total of 9 ½, as the Brewers and Cubs have hit the UNDER in six of the previous seven matchups.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Yankees

Boston is skidding out of control of late after getting swept at home by Tampa Bay to slip to 3 ½ games out of the second Wild Card position in the American League. After taking the first three games against the Yankees at Fenway Park last weekend, the Red Sox have dropped four consecutive contests. New York hooks up with Boston for a second consecutive weekend as the Yankees try to continue to keep their distance from the Red Sox in the AL East race.

The Yankees earned a two-game split with the Diamondbacks in Wednesday’s 7-5 victory in the Bronx to salvage the final meeting of the four-game season series. New York owns a pedestrian 4-6 record in the last 10 games following a five-game winning streak as James Paxton (5-6, 4.72 ERA) tries to turn around his recent bad luck. Paxton is winless in his last five appearances, capped off by allowing a season-high seven runs in four innings of a 10-5 defeat at Boston last Friday.

The Red Sox counter with left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (13-4, 4.13 ERA), as Boston owns a solid 8-1 record in his past nine trips to the mound. Rodriguez defeated the Yankees at Fenway last Saturday, 9-5 as a -145 favorite, while allowing three earned runs in 5.2 innings of work. The Sox have won each of Rodriguez’s last six starts away from Boston, while the defending champions beat the Yankees twice in his three starts in the Bronx last season.

Betcha didn’t know: Jason Vargas makes his Phillies’ debut on Friday as the struggling White Sox invade Citizens Bank Park. Vargas won his final three starts as a member of the Mets, while posting a 2.93 home ERA this season which included a 6-2 mark to the UNDER. The White Sox enters Friday’s action owning an awful 2-13 record the last 15 road games, while dropping eight of their past 11 away series openers.

              July 31, 2019
              By Joe Williams

              Friday, Aug. 2

Reds LHP Alex Wood will face his former and original organization when he meets the Braves and RHP Kevin Gausman. It will be just his second start of the season after spending the first few months on the 60-day injured list due to a back injury. He allowed two earned runs, seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts against Colorado at home on July 28, an under result. This will be his first road outing of 2019. For the Braves, the over is 5-1 in Gausman's past six outings, although the under is a perfect 5-0 in the past five at home overall, and 7-1-1 in the past nine at home.

The Royals use RHP Glenn Sparkman against Twins LHP Martin Perez in the Twin Cities in the series opener. The over and under has alternated in each of the past five outings with Sparkman, while the total pushed in his last start in Minnesota back on June 15 when he allowed five runs - four earned - and five hits over five innings, and the under cashed on June 20 in his most recent start against the Twins. The over has hit in three of the past four start by Perez, while going 8-2 across his past 10 outings, including 5-1 in his past six outings at Target Field.

The Nationals and Diamondbacks square off in the desert with RHP Joe Ross and LHP Robbie Ray locking horns. This will be just the second start of the season for Ross, and the under cashed in that outing on July 21 in Atlanta when he allowed three earned runs, eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. For the Snakes, Ray enters with a 9-7 record, 3.91 ERA and .310 opponent on-base percentage with 173 strikeouts over 129 innings. The under is 3-1-1 in the past five starts by Ray. Since July 5, the under is 11-8-2 across the past 21 outings. In the past six starts at home, the under is 4-1-1 for Ray and the D-Backs, too.

              Wind Report

At Progressive Field in Cleveland, the winds will be blowing 9-12 mph in from the right-center field power alley to affect the Angels and Indians, particularly left-handed power hitters. The Tigers and Rangers will also be battling a stiff 11-14 mph wind blowing in from right field into the face of the batters. Other than that, winds will be rather light and variable at all of the other MLB venues.

                            STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                            STREAKING

Wade Miley, Houston Astros (9-4, 3.06 ERA, $765):
The Astros rotation is getting all the headlines post-trade deadline and Miley may be the forgotten man. But he shouldn’t be. The veteran lefty is on an outstanding run, pitching to a1.95 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP, while limiting opponents to a .178 batting average over his last six starts. The Astros are big -260 home favorites for tonight’s matchup with the Mariners with a total of 10.

                            SLUMPING

James Paxton, New York Yankees (5-6, 4.72 ERA, $-674):
The Yankees surprised most people by not upgrading their rotation at the trade deadline, so they’ll need guys like Paxton to turn things around instead.

The Big Maple’s first season in the Bronx has not gone to script and his current slump hasn’t helped matters. The lefty has an 8.78 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP over his past three starts, while allowing opponents to get on base at a .400 clip.

                            • Torres hits slam, Yanks beat Red Sox 4-2
                              August 2, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Gleyber Torres hit a first-inning grand slam, left-hander James Paxton cruised after that and the New York Yankees three-hit the Boston Red Sox in a 4-2 victory Friday night.

Boston has lost five straight for the first time since 2015 and dropped 11 + games behind first-place New York in the AL East.

Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez hit a two-run homer during yet another rocky first inning by Paxton, but Torres bailed him out with his slam off Eduardo Rodriguez (13-5). Paxton (6-6) struck out the side in the second and completed six innings on 100 pitches, allowing two hits and two runs with six strikeouts.

New York earned its major league-leading 35th comeback win.

Yankees relievers Tommy Kahnle and Zack Britton pitched a scoreless inning each, and Aroldis Chapman was perfect in the ninth for his 28th save.

                              ASTROS 10, MARINERS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Wade Miley had another solid start and Houston backed him with a season-high six homers in a rout of Seattle.

Yordan Alvarez, Jake Marisnick, Martin Maldonado and Jose Altuve all connected off starter Yusei Kikuchi (4-8) to leave him tied with Justin Verlander for most home runs allowed in the majors this season with 28.

Carlos Correa and Aledmys Diaz also homered for Houston, which improved to 10-1 against the Mariners this season.

It was the most home runs that Astros have hit in one game since also going deep six times in a 17-6 victory over the Twins on May 31, 2017.

Miley (10-4) allowed three hits and two runs in six innings to win his third straight decision.

Daniel Vogelbach hit a two-run homer for the Mariners, who lost their second straight after winning their previous six games.

                              RANGERS 5, TIGERS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Texas reliever Jose Leclerc hung on for a save, then fired the ball onto the right field roof at Globe Life Park after the Rangers beat Detroit.

The Tigers scored twice in a messy ninth inning and had runners on second and third with two outs when Jeimer Candelario hit a grounder to first baseman Danny Santana, who flipped to Leclerc covering the bag to end it. Leclerc took a couple of steps and let fly, the ball sailing far over the seats.

Lance Lynn (14-6) struck out 10 in seven innings and tied Houston's Justin Verlander and Washington's Stephen Strasburg for the major league lead in wins. Lynn allowed four hits.

                              Leclerc got his sixth save.

Miguel Sano, Luis Arraez and Jason Castro added RBIs for the Twins.

Trevor May (4-3) needed one pitch to get the final out of the seventh inning before newly acquired Sam Dyson. Sergio Romo got the final four outs for his first save with Minnesota.

Richard Lovelady (0-1) took the loss.

Galvis hit his 17th homer in the fourth inning off Aaron Brooks (2-5) and Drury connected in the sixth for a 4-0 lead. Toronto has seven home runs in the first two games of the series and a major league-leading 81 since June 16.

Chris Davis homered for the Orioles in this matchup between the last two teams in the AL East standings.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Yasiel Puig drove in his first two runs for Cleveland and Mike Clevinger won his fifth straight by beating Los Angeles.

Three Cubs relievers finished with three scoreless innings.

Wood (1-0) was sharp in his second start since returning from a season-long back injury, allowing five baserunners and solo homers to Austin Riley in the fifth and Ronald Acuna Jr. in the sixth. Wood struck out five.

Raisel Iglesias earned his 21st save in 24 chances.

                              PIRATES 8, METS 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Starling Marte's three-run homer in the seventh inning broke open a tight game and Pittsburgh snapped New York's seven-game winning streak.

The Pirates led 5-4 when Marte turned on a pitch from Tyler Bashlor and sent it into the seats in left field for his 19th home run of season.

Melky Cabrera hit a two-run double during Pittsburgh's five-run fourth inning against Steven Matz (6-7). Jose Osuna had two hits and an RBI for the Pirates.

Trevor Williams (4-4) overcame a shaky start to pick up his first victory since May 10.

Pete Alonzo, Robinson Cano and Amed Rosario all had two hits apiece for the Mets.

Dahl left in obvious pain as his teammates gathered around. The Rockies said X-rays on his right ankle were negative, and the club had yet to determine the severity of the injury.

Trevor Story and Ryan McMahon also homered for the Rockies. Mike Yastrzemski had a home run and Austin Slater hit a run-scoring triple for the Giants.

Scott Oberg got out of a two-on, one-out jam for his fourth save.

                              NATIONALS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 0

PHOENIX (AP) - Late lineup addition Matt Adams broke a scoreless tie with a sixth-inning double and Joe Ross won his first game in more than two years as Washington opened a nine-game road trip with a victory over Arizona.

Ross and four relievers limited the Diamondbacks to one hit as the Nationals broke a two-game losing streak.

Juan Soto hit a solo homer in the eighth inning.

Adams doubled with two outs off left-hander Alex Young in the sixth after Adam Eaton led off with a double and Brian Dozier was intentionally walked with two outs.

Ross (1-3) gave up one hit and five walks in 5 1/3 innings. Sean Doolittle pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 24th save in 28 attempts.

Young (3-1) gave up three hits and three walks while striking out a career-high nine.

                              WHITE SOX 4, PHILLIES 3, 15 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jose Abreu hit an RBI single off outfielder Roman Quinn in the 15th inning and Chicago outlasted Philadelphia.

Phillies pitcher Vince Velasquez, playing left field, threw out the potential go-ahead run in the 14th with Quinn (0-1) on the mound. He nearly did it again in the 15th but Leury Garcia barely beat the throw.

Josh Osich (1-0) tossed two innings for the win and Chicago used nine pitchers to snap a four-game losing streak.

Jason Vargas looked sharp in his first start since the Phillies acquired him from the Mets. The soft-tossing lefty allowed two runs and five hits, striking out five in 6 1/3 innings.

White Sox starter Ivan Nova allowed two runs - one earned - and five hits in five-plus innings.

Tim Anderson hit a double with two outs in the third and Abreu launched his 23rd homer out to left-center to give the White Sox an early 2-0 lead.
