  • LEADING OFF: Davis breaks loose, chilly starts, deGrom goes
    April 13, 2019
    By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

    BACK IN THE SWING?

Chris Davis looked like the star slugger he once was, ending his record 0-for-54 slump with a single and two doubles in Baltimore's 9-5 win at Boston. The two-time major league homer champ drove in four runs.

Davis had been hitless in 33 at-bats this season, extending a skid that began last September. He kept the souvenir ball from the drought-breaking hit.

''I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but obviously something special,'' he said.

    TOASTY

Temperatures are supposed to be in the mid-40s at Target Field when the Minnesota Twins finish up their series against Detroit.

After the teams were snowed out Friday, it was 37 degrees at gametime Saturday when the Twins topped the Tigers 4-3 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, there is a mixture of snow and rain in the forecast at Wrigley Field for the game between the Cubs and Angels.

    BOUNCING BACK

Jacob deGrom hopes for a return to his NL Cy Young Award form when he starts for the Mets at Atlanta in the Sunday night game.

DeGrom was dominant in his first two outings this season, striking out 24 in 13 shutout innings. But then last Tuesday, the Twins tagged him for six runs and eight hits, including three home runs.

    MAX REST

Nationals ace Max Scherzer (1-2, 3.32 ERA) will make his fourth start of the season a day later than expected. He was held back after dealing with soreness in his right leg, and now faces Pittsburgh at home. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is 11-10 in 32 career starts when working with six or more days of rest.

    HITTING BLUES

AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell of the Rays took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning before Toronto rallied to win Saturday. That marked the fifth time this season the Blue Jays have been held hitless through at least five innings.

The Blue Jays try to get off to a better start when they face Tampa Bay righty Charlie Morton (2-0, 2.25 ERA).

    SHAKY

The top four Red Sox starters - Chris Sale, David Price, Nathan Eovaldi and Rick Porcello - are 0-7 with an 8.43 ERA. Price tries to get a win when he pitches against Baltimore in his game at Fenway Park this season.

        April 13, 2019

        Sunday, April 14

The Cardinals will look to continue their strong play with RHP Miles Mikolas on the hill. They're 13-2 in his past 15 starts against losing teams, while going 6-1 in his past seven on the road. They're also a whopping 14-2 in the past 16 outings while working on five days of rest. It's the complete opposite picture for RHP Anthony DeSclafani and the Reds. They're 0-4 in DeSclafani's past four against NL Central teams, 0-6 in their past six starts overall and 0-5 in the past five starts against teams with a winning overall record. However, the Reds are 4-0 in the past four home starts by DeSclafani against the Cards, and they're 4-1 in his past five against St. Louis. The under is 4-0 in DeSclafani's past four home starts against the Cards, too.

After taking a licking in Friday's game in Kansas City, the Indians look to bounce back Sunday with their ace RHP Corey Kluber on the bump. The Indians have posted a 13-3 record in the past 16 road outings by Klubot against teams with a losing record, and they're 35-16 in his past 51 starts against AL Central foes. However, they are just 2-5 in his past seven road outings. Royals RHP Jakob Junis has been a mess. The Royals are 7-16 in the past 23 starts, while going 2-11 in his past 13 outings against teams with a winning record. They're also 1-6 in his past seven at home against teams with a winning overall mark. The over is 5-1 in Kluber's past six road starts against the Royals, and the Indians are just 2-8 in his past 10 starts at Kauffman Stadium.

In the Sunday night game in Atlanta, the Mets will wheel out RHP Jacob deGrom and the Braves will counter with RHP Julio Teheran. The Mets are 4-0 in deGrom's past four starts against divisional foes, while going 4-1 in the past five road outings. For the Braves, they're 4-1 in Teheran's past five home starts, while going 9-2 in his past 11 home outings against teams with a winning record. They're 7-3 in Teheran's past 10 starts overall, too. The under is a solid 21-8-2 in the past 31 starts overall by deGrom, while going 5-1-1 in his past seven on the road. The over is 4-1 in the past five starts overall, but the under is 20-8-1 in the past 29 home outings by Teheran. The under is also 4-0 in the past four home starts by Teheran against the Mets, and 5-2 in his past seven overall vs. NYM. The under is 6-2 in deGrom's past eight starts on the road against the Braves, while going a perfect 6-0 in his past six against Atlanta.

        Weather Report

The winds will pick up in the nation's capital for the series finale between the Pirates and Nationals. The wind will be gusting from 10-13 mph out to the left-field power alley. In Kansas City, the wind will be blowing from left field to first base at a 10-13 mph clip, possibly knocking down any potential fly balls.

On the north side of Chicago, there is snow in the forecast for the first pitch. There is a 75 percent chance of snow, tailing off by 3:00 p.m. CDT. There will be a cold wind, too, blowing 16-19 mph from left-center field into the face of the batters. In other words, very miserable and un-April-like conditions. Since it's an interleague game between the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago Cubs, they'll likely do anything they have to do to get this game in, even if it doesn't start until the evening after a lengthy delay. While temperatures will be freezing or below by 5 p.m. CDT, the precipitation chances will be 20 percent or less.

In Texas, and in San Francisco, the winds will be blowing out to straightaway center field at a 10-13 mph clip, so watch the overs in those two contests.

On Sunday night, the Mets and Braves will see a 13-16 mph wind blowing right to left, knocking down balls hit up into the air.

                  • STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                    STREAKING

Charlie Morton Tampa Bay Rays (2-0, 2.25 ERA, $101)

For the second day in a row we have a Rays pitcher here. The former Astro has been lights out in Tampa Bay, striking out 21 batters in 16 innings so far in 2019. He must be licking his chops against a Blue Jays lineup that ranks near the bottom of the league in scoring with 3.47 runs per game and batting average at .201.

The Under is 12-2 in the Jays last 14 games at home and 10-4-1 in the Rays last 15 overall.

                    SLUMPING

Jose Urena, Florida Marlins (0-3, 9.22 ERA, -$300)

From one Sunshine State pitcher to another, Urena has been getting lit up this season which is probably music to the ears of some baseball fans - especially ones in Atlanta. His WHIP is at 2.12 and opposing batters have a .369 BA against the Dominican right-hander.

Today he faces off against a formidible Phillies lineup which ranks in the top-10 of the league in both runs scored and OPS. Over the last three years, Urena has allowed 11 homeruns to Philly batters, more than any other team in the league. This season, 17 of Philadelphia's 18 homers have come off right-handed pitchers.

                    THREE STRIKES

                    TURNING AROUND A TREND

This afternoon's contest between the Oakland A's and Texas Rangers will feature two starting pitchers who are off to strong starts this season. But while Oakland hurler Brett Anderson has an ERA of 2.50 and Rangers righty Adrian Sampson has an ERA of 1.86, there are strong Over trends in play for this matchup.

The A's are 6-0 to the Over in their last six games, and 4-1-1 to the Over in Anderson's previous six starts. The Rangers are 8-3 O/U in their last 11 games in Arlington while the O/U is also 4-0 in the last four games in the head-to-head.

                    DODGERS DOWNWARD TURN

After starting the season off strong thanks to their heavy hitting, the Dodgers have crashed back to earth. L.A. has lost six games in a row while averaging only 3 runs per game during that stretch. Today the Dodgers try to avoid getting swept at home in their series against the Brewers. The Dodgers are also just 1-5 in pitcher Ross Stripling's last six starts while the Brewers are 7-2 in Jhoulys Chacin's last nine.

                    THE UMPIRE BACKS STRIKES

Umpire Manny Gonzalez has called three games this season, and all three cashed in on the Under with just 5.33 total runs scored per contest. Gonzalez has called an average of 18.67 strikouts per game, compared to 6.33 walks per game. Today Gonzalez will be calling the game between Cleveland and the Kansas City Royals, with the total set at 7.5 thanks to Cleveland ace Corey Kluber.

                    • Marquez throws 1-hitter, Rockies top SF 4-0, end 8-game skid
                      April 14, 2019
                      By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) German Marquez pitched a one-hitter, nicked only by Evan Longoria's single with one out in the eighth inning, and the Colorado Rockies ended an eight-game losing streak by beating the San Francisco Giants 4-0 Sunday.

Marquez (2-1) struck out nine and walked none while throwing 105 pitches in the first complete game in the majors this season. It was the first-ever complete game for Marquez in 156 pro starts, including 69 in the big leagues.

Marquez had allowed just one runner, hitting Kevin Pillar with a pitch to begin the sixth inning, and was in complete control heading into the eighth. Brandon Crawford opened the eighth with a hard, one-hopper that deflected off third baseman Nolan Arenado's glove. Arenado quickly grabbed the ball out of the air and zipped a throw to retire Crawford.

Longoria followed with a grounder in the hole, just beyond Arenado's dive. The Gold Glover took off his mitt and slammed it to the ground, shouting in frustration that the no-hit bid had been broken up.

Arenado hit a three-run homer, his first this season. The four-time Silver Slugger entered the day batting .246 with six RBIs.

Derek Holland (1-2) allowed four runs on six hits in six innings.

                      RED SOX 4, ORIOLES 0

BOSTON (AP) - David Price pitched seven stellar innings with seven strikeouts, Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run homer and drove in every run, and Boston beat Baltimore.

Boston's big starting foursome of Price, Chris Sale, Rick Porcello and Nathan Eovaldi entered Sunday 0-7 with an 8.43 ERA in 11 starts. Price (1-1) responded with clearly their best outing, mixing his mid-90s fastball with a sharp changeup and cutter to allow just three hits without issuing a walk.

Baltimore's Chris Davis went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts a day after ending his record 0-for-54 stretch.

Ryan Brasier escaped a jam in the eighth, and Matt Barnes worked the ninth, closing out the combined five-hitter.

John Means (1-2) gave up a run and four hits in five innings, striking out three and walking one in just his second big league start. He made his first career appearance in Fenway Park last Sept. 26, allowing five runs over 3 1/3 innings.

                      PHILLIES 3, MARLINS 1, 14 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) - Jean Segura's two-run homer to left in the 14th inning put Philadelphia on top, and the Phillies beat Miami in the longest game of the young season for either team.

Andrew McCutchen tripled to the wall in left-center, and Segura followed with his first home run of the season. Cesar Hernandez also got his first homer of the season for the Phillies. Brian Anderson hit his second for Miami.

Wei-Yin Chen (0-1) came on to pitch the 14th, was charged with both runs and his ERA actually dipped from 24.75 to 23.40. Chen - the highest-paid Marlins player this season, making $20 million - has allowed 12 runs over three innings of relief in his last two appearances.

Miami batters struck out 18 times, tied for the fourth-most in franchise history. Victor Arano (1-0) pitched the 12th and 13th for Philadelphia, getting all six outs by strikeout. Jose Alvarez worked the 14th, gave up a leadoff single but finished out his first save.

                      DODGERS 7, BREWERS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ross Stripling tossed eight strong innings to rescue an overworked bullpen, Joc Pederson and Alex Verdugo homered, and Los Angeles routed Milwaukee to snap a six-game skid.

The Dodgers avoided back-to-back sweeps, something they haven't had since 2017 when they last dropped seven games in a row.

Stripling (1-1) earned his first win in his fourth start of the season. The right-hander didn't record his first strikeout until the sixth inning and instead retired 14 of his first 17 batters on flyouts or grounders.

The Dodgers jumped on Jhoulys Chacin (2-2) in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by Verdugo.

                      WHITE SOX 5, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Tim Anderson hit his first career grand slam and Carlos Rodon pitched Chicago over scuffling New York.

Jose Abreu nearly had a grand slam as well - to almost the same spot in the ballpark - but settled for a sacrifice fly when right fielder Aaron Judge made a jumping catch in front of the wall. Held to one hit Saturday in a 4-0 loss, Chicago chased Masahiro Tanaka (1-1) with nobody out in the fifth and won for only the second time in eight games.

Yoan Moncada had three hits and a walk for the White Sox (5-9), who stole five bases in the last five innings - several of them uncontested. Chicago won two of three to take consecutive series in the Bronx for the first time since 2002-03. Before last August, the White Sox hadn't captured a series at Yankee Stadium since 2005.

Rodon (2-2) allowed three hits in six innings and struck out five, improving to 3-0 in three starts at Yankee Stadium. Four relievers finished a four-hitter, with Alex Colome getting three quick outs for his third save.

                      ROYALS 9, INDIANS 8

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Pinch-runner extraordinaire Terrance Gore stole a base and then scored on Hunter Dozier's single in the ninth inning, lifting Kansas City over Cleveland to complete a three-game sweep of the AL Central favorites.

Ryan O'Hearn led off the ninth with a walk against Brad Hand (0-1) and was replaced by Gore. The speedster swiped second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Roberto Perez. Dozier then singled to left for Kansas City's first walk-off win of the season.

The Royals roughed up two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber, who allowed 11 of his 18 batters to reach base safely. He gave up six runs, six hits and a career-most five walks in just 2 2/3 innings. The five walks doubled Kluber's season total - he didn't walk more than three batters in any game in 2018.

Wily Peralta (1-1) pitched the top of the ninth.

                      BRAVES 7, METS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Julio Teheran outpitched Jacob deGrom, Josh Donaldson and Nick Markakis homered, and Atlanta beat New York.

Teheran gave up one run and six hits in six innings.

It was a second straight losing performance for deGrom, who has allowed five homers in his last two starts. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner gave up 10 homers all of last season.

Markakis went deep in the second and Donaldson added another solo shot in the fifth as the Braves won for the fifth time in their last seven games. Charlie Culberson's two-run drive made it 5-1 in the sixth. It was Culberson's fifth career pinch-hit homer.

J.D. Davis' third homer gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the second. New York got RBI singles by Amed Rosario and Keon Broxton in the eighth.

DeGrom struck out nine, but allowed three runs and issued four walks.

SEATTLE (AP) - Gerrit Cole struck out 11 in six innings, Aledmys Diaz homered and Houston completed a three-game sweep of Seattle.

Cole (1-2) gave up two runs on four hits, including a leadoff home run to Mitch Haniger, and did not walk a batter. Cole has pitched at least six innings in each of his four starts.

Haniger's homer, his fifth, extended the Mariners' major league record streak of 18 games with a home run to start the season. Brandon Brennan (1-1) ended his season-opening scoreless streak at 11 1/3 innings.

Hector Rondon, Ryan Pressly and Roberto Osuna each pitched a perfect inning in relief for Houston, with Osuna working the ninth for his seventh save.

                      CARDINALS 9, REDS 5

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) - Marcell Ozuna hit two home runs and Matt Carpenter connected for a tiebreaking drive in the seventh inning that sent St. Louis over Cincinnati for a split of their two-game series in Mexico.

Tyler O'Neill also homered for St. Louis. Yasiel Puig hit his first home run for the Reds and Jesse Winker hit his second in two days at Estadio de Beisbol de Monterrey.

The Cardinals saluted the fans after the win and gave away their hats. The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels will play twice at this stadium in early May - Major League Baseball has committed to bring regular-season games to Mexico until 2021.

It was 4-all when Carpenter opened the seventh with his second home run of the season, tagging Amir Garrett (1-1). Ozuna hit a solo homer off Jared Hughes and Jose Martinez capped the five-run inning with a two-run single that made it 9-4. Jordan Hicks closed for this third save. John Gant (3-0) pitched a scoreless inning.

                      RAYS 8, BLUE JAYS 4

TORONTO (AP) - Pinch-hitter Guillermo Heredia homered to cap a five-run burst in the eighth inning and Tampa Bay beat Toronto for its fifth straight series victory to start the season.

Tampa Bay improved to 12-4 and matched the 2010 team for the best 16-game start in club history. The Blue Jays have lost seven of nine and haven't won a series this year.

Blue Jays reliever Thomas Pannone became the 89th different pitcher in big league history to strike out the side on nine pitches. He fanned a swinging Avisail Garcia, then got Brandon Lowe and Daniel Robertson looking in the fifth.

Adam Kolarek (1-0) pitched one inning for the victory. Marcus Stroman (0-3) allowed three runs, none earned, in four innings. He walked four and struck out five.

                      PIRATES 4, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rookie Jason Martin hit a tiebreaking double in the top of the ninth inning against Washington's shaky bullpen, then Felipe Vazquez escaped a bases-loaded jam Pittsburgh a win.

The Pirates took two of three and won a series at Nationals Park for the first time since 2013. Josh Bell drew a leadoff walk in the ninth from Wander Suero (1-1) and moved to second on Colin Moran's grounder. With two outs, Martin hit a ground-rule double to left for his second major league RBI.

The Nationals loaded the bases in the bottom half on a single, walk and Adam Eaton's bunt single with one out. Vazquez (1-0) struck out Howie Kendrick and retired Anthony Rendon on a flyball to end it.

Washington starter Max Scherzer allowed three runs and seven hits while working a season-high eight innings. He struck out seven.

                      TWINS 6, TIGERS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Berrios (2-1) pitched into the seventh inning for his first win since opening day, Trevor Hildenberger struck out two with the bases loaded for his first save and Minnesota beat Detroit to complete a two-game sweep.

C.J. Cron homered and drove in three, and Eddie Rosario was a triple short of the cycle for the Twins, who have won three of four.

In his shortest outing of the season, Jordan Zimmermann (0-2) lasted three innings and allowed five runs and eight hits with one strikeout.

                      RANGERS 8, ATHLETICS 7

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Danny Santana had a two-run, pinch-hit triple and scored the go-ahead run on Delino DeShields' bunt single during a four-run eighth inning, lifting Texas over Oakland.

Jeffrey Springs (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Jose Leclerc struck out three in the ninth for his third save.

Joakim Soria (0-2) got one out in the eighth and was charged with four runs.

                      DIAMONDBACKS 8, PADRES 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Zack Greinke pitched seven strong innings and helped himself with two hits, pinch-hitter David Peralta connected for a three-run homer and Arizona beat San Diego to stop a four-game losing streak.

Greinke (2-1) allowed two runs and four hits with six strikeouts. He won despite surrendering his seventh and eighth home runs of the season. Ketel Marte and Christian Walker also homered for the Diamondbacks.

Manuel Margot led off the game with a home run and Fernando Tatis Jr. also connected for NL West-leading San Diego. The Padres had won four in a row. San Diego starter Eric Lauer (2-2) gave up three runs on eight hits over five innings.

                          Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sport weekend……

                          13) I’m listening to Hubie Brown analyze the Spurs-Nuggets game Saturday, and he talks about when he coached games in Denver in the old ABA, when he coached the Kentucky Colonels, who were a really good team. He was talking about the high altitude in Denver.

Then it dawned on me; the ABA folded in 1976, WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL.

Hubie is so awesome, so sharp, a pleasure to listen to. Absolutely no nonsense; he was coaching pro ball when I had a full head of curly hair, and thats a damn long time ago.

                          12) The 1974-75 Kentucky Colonels were really good; they went 58-26, won the second-to-last ABA title, with a roster that included Artis Gilmore, Dan Issel, Louie Dampier, Will Jones, really good players.

Had the Colonels’ owner not sold out to the ABA’s other owners and folded the Colonels (he was later allowed to buy the Celtics as a reward for screwing the Kentucky fans), Hubie Brown would have had a hell of a ballclub to go into the NBA with.

Instead, the Nets, Pacers, Nuggets, Spurs joined the NBA for the 1976-77 season.

                          11) One thing that disappointed me about Showtime’s 4-part Action series about sports betting is that they never showed the Westgate Theater on an NFL Sunday, which is my favorite place to be on any football Sunday. Just a perfect setup. Food to the left, betting in back, people are respectful of each other. I’ve had some excellent conversations in there with total strangers while watching football.

On a college football Saturday, the Westgate SuperBook is great fun. The SuperBook is a cool place to hang out and the SouthPoint is awesome for baseball/basketball nights, but for an NFL Sunday, a 1,500-seat theater with food/betting is pretty much ideal.

                          10) Last episode of the Action series last night focused on the Super Bowl, which was a very sad few hours at Armadillo World HQ (I’ve been a Ram fan since 1966). This isn’t an episode I’ll watch more than once. Too soon.

                          9) FOX should have a much better #1 baseball analyst than John Smoltz, who doesn’t seem to like baseball that much. Listen to him for a few innings and it is obvious he’d much rather be out on the golf course. He should work for the Golf Channel.

                          8) Congrats to the person who wagered $85,000 on Eldrick Woods this week at 14-1 odds; his payday is $1.19M, about half of what Woods won at Augusta.

                          7) Baseball injuries:
                          — Seattle put P Wade LeBlanc (oblique) on the IL
                          — Braves put P Aroyds Vizcaino (shoulder) on IL
                          — Boston OF Andrew Benitendi left Sunday’s game after fouling a ball off his foot.

                          6) First two days of NBA playoffs, favorites were 4-4 vs spread; under was 8-0.

                          5) Coaching carousel:
                          — Cincinnati hired Northern Kentucky’s John Brannen as its new coach.
                          — Utah Valley hired Lakers’ assistant Mark Madsen as its new coach.
                          — Wofford promoted associate coach Jay McAuley as head coach.

                          4) James Harden won the NBA scoring title this season by 8.09 points/game, the biggest margin of victory since Wilt Chamberlain won it by 16+ points in 1962-63.

                          3) It is April 15; Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel are still free agents. Weird.

                          2) Former Clemson QB Kelly Bryant is playing at Missouri now; when Mizzou had its spring game this weekend, 7 or 8 of his Clemson teammates went to Columbia to watch Bryant play- thats something NFL scouts will take note of down the road. A quarterback being liked/respected by teammates is a big deal to NFL scouts.

                          1) NFL schedule comes out this week; seems like last season just ended.

                          • LEADING OFF: MLB celebrates Jackie Robinson Day
                            April 14, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

                            JACKIE ROBINSON DAY

Major League Baseball observes Jackie Robinson Day at ballparks all over the country. Robinson broke baseball's color barrier when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. All players, managers, coaches, umpires and other on-field personnel will wear Robinson's retired No. 42. Members of Robinson's family are expected to be at Dodger Stadium for the opener of a three-game series between the Reds and Dodgers.

                            HE'S BACK

Speaking of Los Angeles, Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw makes his first start of the season after being sidelined by left shoulder inflammation. Kershaw is 3-2 with a 2.54 ERA in 10 career starts versus Cincinnati. He likely will face former teammate Yasiel Puig in his return to L.A. after he was traded to the Reds in December. Puig spent his first six major league seasons with the Dodgers. Kershaw will be opposed by Luis Castillo, who has a sparkling 0.92 ERA over his first three starts this year.

                            PATRIOTS' DAY

The Red Sox are set to play their annual Patriots' Day morning game, hosting Baltimore for an odd 11:05 a.m. start. Last year's game was postponed due to poor weather, the first rainout on the Massachusetts holiday since 1994. Weather could be an issue again this year, although forecasts project the rain to ease up right around first pitch. Boston has a chance to win its first series this season in the finale of a four-game set with the Orioles.

                            TIME TO RESET

The Indians and Mariners open a series in Seattle, both coming off weekend sweeps to division rivals. Cleveland dropped three at Kansas City. The Mariners lost three home games to the Astros, dropping their early AL West lead to one game. Trevor Bauer (1-1, 2.29 ERA) pitches for the Indians against Seattle's Yusei Kikuchi (0-0, 4.15 ERA).

                            SLUMPING

Cardinals reliever Andrew Miller looks to get back on track after another shaky outing in Sunday's 9-5 victory over the Reds in Mexico. The 6-foot-7 left-hander allowed a single to Matt Kemp, struck out Jose Peraza and walked Curt Casali before he was replaced by Jordan Hicks. Miller agreed to a $25 million, two-year deal with St. Louis in December. He has a 6.35 ERA in nine games this season, allowing seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Cardinals begin a three-game series at Milwaukee on Monday night.

Matt Shoemaker, Toronto Blue Jays (3-0, 0.92 ERA, $429)

The new digs in Toronto seem to really suit Shoemaker who is having a career year with the Jays. The 32-year-old has struck out 19 batters and allowed just nine hits in 19.2 innings, with a WHIP of 0.71. His early season performance has paid off handsomely for a Blue Jays squad that signed him to a one-year $3.5 million contract in December, and for bettors who've backed him their investment will have paid off as well.

Today, Shoemaker and the Blue Jays visit Minnesota as +115 underdogs. He could be in for a tough challenge against the Twins who are third in the majors in batting average and ninth in runs scored per game.

                              SLUMPING

Yu Darvish, Chicago Cubs (0-2, 7.50 ERA, $-426)

Darvish is another 32-year-old righty but he is off to a terrible start this season, allowing 12 hits and walking 11 batters through 12 innings with a WHIP of 1.92. He has struggled with his control, especially of his fastball.

Darvish will be looking to bounce back tonight against the Miami Marlins who are 28th in the league in runs scored per game with 2.88 and 23rd in BA hitting .222. The Cubbies are -125 faves for this road matchup with the 4-12 Marlins.

                              THREE STRIKES

                              STRIKELESS IN SEATTLE

Cleveland generally plays well with Trevor Bauer starting, going 8-3 in his last 11 starts but there's a couple trends to beware of before backing them today. The Indians are 1-6 in Bauer's last seven starts against the Mariners and 1-4 in his last five starts in Seattle. Bauer has also historically struggled in April, with Cleveland 1-6 in his last seven starts on the road during this month.

                              THE CLAW MAKES HIS RETURN

Clayton Kershaw makes his season debut against the Cincinnati Reds Monday night, with the Dodgers -160 home faves. Arguably the greatest pitcher of this decade (along with Max Scherzer), Kershaw had problems with his shoulder during Spring Training causing L.A. to shut him down and start his season on the injured list. He went 9-5 with a 2.73 ERA in 2018.

The Dodgers are 42-12 in Kershaw's last 54 home starts, and with Cincinnati starting Luis Castillo who is off to a great year with an ERA of 0.92 and a WHIP of 0.66 through three starts, the first five innings Under might be a good play.

                              COMING DOWN TO EARTH

Colorado heads to San Diego as +135 underdogs. The Rockies are 21-5-3 to the Under in their last 29 games away from Coors Field while the Padres have cashed in on the Under in six of their previous eight contests at home. The O/U for this one is set at a low 7 (especially considering the mediocrity of starting pitchers Joey Luchessi and Antonio Senzatela) but might be worth looking at given how poor both teams have batted so far this year.

                                Wild Cards
The St. Louis Cardinals meet the Milwaukee Brewers in a key early season matchup in the National League Central. The Cards enter play with six victories over the past seven outings, and they're a perfect 5-0 in the past five games against teams with a winning overall record. In addition, they're 4-1 in the past five games against a right-handed starting pitcher, while going 17-8 in the past 25 on the road vs. RHP. While all of that is well and good, they're 1-7 in the past eight matchups against the Brewers.

The Brewers have emerged as a contender in the National League Central over the past two seasons, and they're have dominated against division foes lately. They're 23-8 in the past 31 games against NL Central teams. The Brewers are also 19-7 in the past 26 games against teams with a winning record, and they're 36-17 in the past 53 games at Miller Park, too. The Brewers have also handled themselves agaisnt winning teams, winning 19 of the past 26 against opponents over .500.

                                Looking Ahead

                                Monday, April 15

The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies do battle at Citizens Bank Park in what should be a solid pitching matchup. RHP Noah Syndergaard will go up against RHP Aaron Nola in what could be a low-scoring affair. The Mets roll into this one with an 8-3 record across the past 11 road games, while going 7-1 in their past eight games on the road against a right-handed starting pitcher. In addition, they're 9-4 in the past 13 overall vs. RHP. All of that is great, but the Mets are actually 2-5 in the past seven starts on the road by Syndergaard against teams with a winning record.

For the Phillies, they're 11-5 in the past 16 games overall, and they're 8-3 in the past 11 at 'The Vault'. In addition, they are 9-4 in the past 13 games inside the division, while going 4-1 in the past five against teams with a winning overall mark. They're 21-6 in the past 27 home outings by Nola, and they're 22-10 in his past 32 starts overall, too. The Phillies have also won 13 of his past 19 starts against NL East opponents. The Mets have made themselves at home in Philly, going 36-17 in their past 53 trips to the City of Brotherly Love. However, the Phillies are 5-0 in Nola's past five starts against the Mets, and 4-0 in his past four at home against the Amazins. The under is also 4-0 in his past four home starts against New York, and 6-0-1 in the past seven meetings overall against the Mets with Nola on the bump.

The Indians and Mariners hook up at T-Mobile Park (formerly Safeco Field) on Monday night, and it's a great pitching matchup with RHP Trevor Bauer and rookie LHP Yusei Kikuchi hooking up. Bauer has posted a 1-1 record with a 2.29 ERA through 19 2/3 innings across three outings. Kikuchi has yet to factor into a decision yet through 21 2/3 innings with just three walks and 15 strikeouts.

The Indians have won just once in the past five games, and they're 1-4 in the past five on the road, too. That includes a three-game sweep at the hand of the lowly Kansas City Royals. Bauer should be the stopper, as the Indians are 8-3 in the past 11 starts overall by Bauer, and 5-2 in the past seven road outings weith Bauer on the hill. They're also 11-5 in the past 16 starts by Bauer against teams with a winning record. The M's have won 16 of the past 21 games overall, and they're 13-4 in the past 17 vs. RHP. However, they're just 0-4 in the past four against teams with a winning record.

                                Weather Report
In Philadelphia, the Mets and Phillies will be facing winds blowing left to right at 19-23 mph, potentially favoring left-handed hitters. At Target Field, the Blue Jays and Twins will be facing a stiff wind of 10-13 mph blowing in from right field to home plate. The Angels and Rangers will also see a strong wing blowing from the right-field foul pole into the face of batters, and the winds will be gusting from 15-18 mph.

                                Tuesday, April 16
The Red Sox and Yankees renew their rivalry for a quickie two-game set in the Bronx on Tuesday night. Neither team has gotten off to the kind of start they were hoping for, as the Red Sox enter the week at 6-10, while the Yankees are just 6-9. Boston tries to get LHP Chris Sale on track. They're just 1-4 in his past five starts, and he enters the game with a dismal 0-3 record, 9.00 ERA and .361 OBP by opponents, while managing just eight strikeouts over 13 innings. That's definitely not what we've come to expect from Sale over the years. The Yankees counter with LHP James Paxton, who isn't that much better at 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA and .388 OBP.

Boston heads into this one 9-3 in the past 12 vs. LHP, and they'e 2-7 over the past nine games on the road, too. For the Yankees, they're just 1-4 in their past five home outings, and 1-5 in the past six games overall. They're also just 1-5 in the past six games at home vs. LHP. In the past five meetings, the Red Sox have won four of them, with the 'over' cashing in seven of the past nine games overall. The over is also 5-2 in the past seven tangles in the Bronx, while going 4-0 in Sale's past four against the Yankees.

The Astros and Athletics kick off a set in Oakland with RHP Collin McHugh and RHP Marco Estrada squaring off. Oakland looks to cool off Houston, as they enter on a nine-game winning streak. The Astros have won six in a row against winning teams, and they're 6-0 in the past six against RHP, too. They're also 20-7 in the past 27 games against AL West foes. In addition, the Astros are an impressive 33-6 in the past 39 starts by McHugh against AL West opponents. On the flip side, the A's have dropped each of Estrada's past four outings, and they're 1-4 in the past five starts against AL West foes, and 2-5 in the past seven vs. RHP.

                                Weather Report
The winds will be gusting at 10-13 mph from home plate to Pesky's Pole in right field, so it could be a high-scoring affair. It will be the opposite conditions in Arlington, as the Angels and Rangers will have a strong 15-18 mph wind blowing in from right field to home plate. In San Diego, the Rockies and Padres will be battling winds blowing in from left-center field to home plate at an 11-14 mph clip.
