  • LEADING OFF: Dodgers hitting HRs, Red Sox skid, Reds drought
    April 5, 2019
    By The Associated Press

A look at what's a happening around the majors Saturday:

    LA LONGBALLS

Cody Bellinger and the Los Angeles Dodgers are on a home run rampage, hitting a whopping 21 in their first eight games - that's the second-most in major league history in that span, only behind the St. Louis Cardinals' 23 in 2000. After launching a franchise-record 235 homers last year, the NL champion Dodgers have connected in every game so far this season.

Rockies righty Jon Gray tries to keep the Dodgers in the park when he starts against them at Coors Field. Bellinger leads the majors with six home runs.

    SKIDS

The defending World Series champion Red Sox are 2-7 on their season-opening 11-game road trip. They got pounded 15-8 Friday night in Arizona - starting pitcher Rick Porcello flung a water cooler against the back wall of the Boston dugout after getting hit hard, and infielder Eduardo Nunez came in to pitch in the eighth inning and gave up a home run to Alex Avila. ... Joey Votto and the Reds have been shut out in three straight games. Their scoreless string of 28 innings is the longest for Cincinnati since a 30-game drought in 2015. ... The Marlins have dropped nine games in a row at Atlanta.

    NICE START

Padres rookie Chris Paddack tries to duplicate his early success when he starts at St. Louis. In his major league debut last weekend, the 23-year-old righty gave up two hits and one run in five innings against San Francisco.

Paddack will aim to slow down Cardinals newcomer Paul Goldschmidt, who has homered five times in seven games.

    CHECK HIM

The Seattle Mariners will see how second baseman Dee Gordon is feeling, a day after he left a game because of a tight groin. Manager Scott Servais isn't sure whether Gordon will be back in the lineup in Chicago against the White Sox.

    WELCOME

Hoping to boost a thin starting rotation, the Orioles have signed Dan Straily to a $575,000, one-year contact.

The 30-year-old right-hander was released March 25 by the Marlins. He was 15-15 in two seasons with the Marlins.

Straily was limited to 23 starts last year, when he went on the disabled list twice because of forearm and oblique strains. He had a 5.94 ERA over 16 2/3 innings in five spring training appearances.

Baltimore's rotation includes Alex Cobb, Andrew Cashner, Dylan Bundy and David Hess, and Nate Karns has been used twice as an opener. Cobb strained a groin late in spring training and was activated from the injured list on Thursday.

              Weekend Watch
              Joe Williams

              Boston Red Socked

The defending champion Boston Red Sox are off to a horrific start, winning just two of their first nine games to kick off the 2019 Major League Baseball season. Their pitchers have had a difficult time keeping the ball in the yard, and the stacked offense hasn't been able to piece together timely hits. The good news for the Red Sox is that the division rival New York Yankees are a banged up bunch and struggling, too. Only the Tampa Bay Rays (6-2) and Baltimore Orioles (4-3) are at .500 or better in the American League East, with the Red Sox already 4 1/2 games out. It's not expected to last.

Boston heads into its game on Saturday in Arizona with just one victory by two or more runs, and the pitching staff has served up 22 home runs. LHP David Price looks to stop the bleeding in the desert, but he coughed up three homers in his initial outing of the season. The Red Sox lost a rare interleague game on Friday, as they are still 20-6 in the past 26 road games against National League opponents, and 41-11 in the past 52 interleague games overall. They're also a very impressive 48-18 in the past 66 against NL West foes.

For the Diamondbacks, they were expected to struggle with Paul Goldschmidt being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in the offseason, and the offense looking to be a bit on the patchwork side. However, they're doing a good job so far. Arizona is 15-6 in the past 21 interleague home games after their 15-8 shellacking of the BoSox on Friday, and the win snapped an 0-9 skid against AL East opponents. The Diamondbacks are still just 4-13 in the past 17 at home vs. left-hander starters, and 2-6 in the past eight overall vs. LHP.

              Looking Ahead

              Saturday, Sept. 22

The Indians had a walk-off win courtesy of Carlos Santana in the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday night, and now they'll have one of their big guns, RHP Carlos Carrasco, pitching against an unproven LHP Thomas Pannone, as they look to clinch the series win. The Indians have posted a 4-0 mark in the past four against AL East teams, while going 19-7 in Cookie Carrasco's past 26 outings. They're also an impressive 14-3 in Carrasco's past 17 home outings against teams with a losing overall record,, too. However, he will be looking to snap a four-game skid against AL East clubs.

The 'under' is an impressive 13-3-1 in the past 17 games overall for the Jays, while going 7-0 in their past seven against AL Central foes. In addition, the under is 8-3-1 in the past 12 games against teams with a winning overall mark. For the Indians, it has been the complete opposite, with the over 5-1-2 int he past eight vs. LHP, and 14-3-4 in the past 21 at home against southpaws. However, the under is 5-1 in Carrasco's past six outings, and 4-0-1 in the past five against teams with a losing overall mark. The under is also 4-1 in the past five meetings in this series, including Friday's game. The Blue Jays have also dropped two of the past 11 meetings in Cleveland.

It's a battle of southpaws in Queens as the Nationals and Mets continue their series. The under has connected in four of the past five meetings at Citi Field. The Nats have owned the Mets in recent season, going 53-21 in the past 74 trips to the boroughs. Whenever LHP Steven Matz faces the Nats, plenty of runs are sure to follow. The over is 4-0 in his past four home outings against Washington, and 5-0 in the past five meetings overall in this series.

The Dodgers and Rockies tangle at Coors Field, and the Dodgers look to improve on their 20-7 mark across the past 27 vs. RHP. The Rockies, on the other hand, are just 1-4 in their past five tries against a righty. They have won 12 of Jon Gray's past 17 starts overall, and seven of his past nine at Coors Field. L.A. has won six straight in this series, while Colorado is 5-1 in Gray's past six home starts against the Dodgers, so something's gotta give. The under is also 5-0 in Gray's past five outings at home vs. L.A., and the nder is 3-0-1 in Walker Buehler's past four against Colorado.

              Weather Report

All of Saturday's games will go off without a hitch, as there is a 10 percent chance or less of precipitation at every outdoor Major League park, and the winds will be 6-8 mph or less, so wind will not play a factor in any of the totals.

              Sunday, Sept. 23

RHP Domingo German takes the ball for the Yankees, and New York has posted a 7-3 record over his past 10 outings. The O's counter with RHP David Hess, who tossed 6 1/3 hitless innings with one walk and eight strikeouts in his win in Toronto on April 1.

RHP Max Scherzer and RHP Zack Wheeler work against each other in an attractive pitching matchup between the Nationals and Mets on Sunday. The Nats are 38-15 in Scherzer's past 53 division starts, and 37-16 in his past 53 outings on the road. The Mets are 6-1 in Wheeler's past seven home outings, and 11-3 in his past 14 starts overall. The Nats are 5-0 in Scherzer's past five road outings against the Mets, while the Mets are 2-6 in Wheeler's past eight home outings against Washington.

The Dodgers roll out LHP Julio Urias for the Sunday night game against RHP Chad Bettis and the Rockies. L.A. has picked up five wins in the past seven road outings by Urias, although they're just 2-5 in his past seven starts against divisional foes. The Rockies hope Bettis can be the stopper to their losing ways. They entered Friday's game just 1-5 in the past six overall. While they're 2-5 in the past seven against southpaws, they're 18-7 in the past 25 home starts by Bettis. However, they're also 1-6 in his past seven tries against teams with a winning overall mark. The 'over' is 7-3-1 in the past 11 starts by Bettis against L.A.

              Weather Report

The biggest trouble spot on Sunday's card appears to be on the south side of Chicago, as the Mariners and White Sox will be facing rain chances of 40 percent, which could delay the start of their game at Guaranteed Rate Field. It won't be a steady shield of rain, however, and the game should get in. The winds will be blowing out of center field into the fact of the batters at a 7-10 mph clip.

In St. Louis, rain won't be the issue, but the Padres and Cardinals will face a jetstream of 13-16 mph blowing out to the left-center field power alley, so watch the 'over' there. The Sunday night game between the Dodgers and Rockies will be played as scheduled, with a slight wind blowing left to right and temperatures around 70 degrees with no precipitation in the forecast. Enjoy!

                • Padres rally past Cardinals 6-4 for 3rd straight win
                  April 6, 2019
                  By The Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) Carson Kelly drilled a single into the left field corner, scoring Nick Ahmed with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks over the struggling Boston Red Sox 5-4 Saturday night.

Boston has dropped three straight and fell to 2-8 overall, a lousy start to their World Series championship defense.

Colten Brewer (0-1) allowed consecutive singles to Eduardo Escobar, Ahmed and Kelly in the ninth. Right fielder Mookie Betts threw out Escobar at home on Ahmed's hit, but Kelly's rip to left allowed Ahmed to score easily.

Kelly had two hits and three RBIs. The walkoff knock was the first of his career.

Greg Holland (1-0) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth.

                  PADRES 6, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Austin Hedges and Manny Machado each hit a two-run homer off Andrew Miller in the eighth inning, helping San Diego beat St. Louis for its third consecutive win.

Fernando Tatis Jr. opened the eighth with a walk and Hedges followed with a go-ahead drive over the wall on in left. With two out and Ian Kinsler on first via another walk, Machado made it 6-3 with his second homer of the season.

It was the first time that Miller (0-1) allowed multiple homers in a game since Sept. 22, 2015 for the New York Yankees at Toronto.

Matt Wisler (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win in his first outing with the Padres. Kirby Yates worked the ninth for his fifth save in five chances.

                  ANGELS 5, RANGERS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Mike Trout hit a grand slam for his fourth homer in three days, and Los Angeles beat Texas for its first back-to-back victories of the season.

Trout's 458-foot blast in the fourth inning off Drew Smyly (0-1) cleared the bullpens beyond the left field fence at Angel Stadium. After homering in the Halos' home opener Thursday and adding two more Friday, Trout delivered the biggest blow yet with his fifth career grand slam, his first since 2015.

Albert Pujols added his 634th career homer in the seventh for Los Angeles. Pujols' first homer of his 19th big league season was his 3,089th career hit, tying Ichiro Suzuki for 22nd place in major league history.

Tyler Skaggs (1-1) pitched 6 1/3 innings of five-hit ball in a strong outing for the Angels. The left-hander won his third consecutive start against Texas, giving up just two earned runs in 17 1/3 innings.

                  CUBS 14, BREWERS 8

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jason Heyward went deep twice for his first multihomer game with Chicago, Cole Hamels grinded through six solid innings and the Cubs ended a six-game skid.

Heyward hit the first of three Chicago homers against starter Corbin Burnes (0-1), with Javier Baez and Victor Caratini also going yard. Heyward added his second shot off Alex Wilson during a seven-run eighth inning. His last multihomer game was on Aug. 16, 2015 for St. Louis against Miami, a season before he signed a $184 million, eight-year contract with Chicago.

Hamels (1-0) labored early, throwing 51 pitches over the first two innings, but he mostly cruised through the next four innings, retiring 12 of his final 14 batters. He limited the damage early, stranding two by striking out Christian Yelich to end the second. He also got Lorenzo Cain to chase a changeup that would have been ball four with two on and two out in the fourth.

Chicago improved to 2-6 with its first win since opening day.

                  DODGERS 7, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Alex Verdugo homered and added an RBI triple as Los Angeles kept up its early power surge in a win over Colorado.

The Dodgers have gone deep in all nine games this season, piling up 22 home runs. Los Angeles had four through nine games last year when the team set a franchise record with 235.

Walker Buehler (1-0) allowed one run over five solid innings as he bounced back from a rough opening outing. He was on a pitch count after a limited spring training.

Kenley Jansen got four outs to earn his fourth save. It was his first appearance in the Mile High City since the All-Star reliever had surgery in the offseason to address an irregular heartbeat that surfaced again while in Denver for a series last August. He didn't travel with the team back to Colorado in September as a precaution.

It was another rough outing for Jon Gray (0-2), who allowed five runs in six innings. Gray has served up a homer in 14 straight appearances, a Rockies record.

                  METS 6, NATIONALS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Pete Alonso and Robinson Cano opened the eighth with consecutive homers, helping the Mets rally for the win.

Keon Broxton put New York ahead to stay with a two-out RBI single off Tony Sipp (0-1). Unlikely cleanup man J.D. Davis went deep twice and Michael Conforto also connected as the Mets improved to 6-2.

Anthony Rendon hit a leadoff homer and Wilmer Difo added a two-run shot in the top of the eighth, putting Washington ahead 5-3. Both drives came off Jeurys Familia (2-0) - never before had he given up two home runs in a game.

Edwin Diaz worked the ninth for his fourth save.

                  ASTROS 6, ATHLETICS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Michael Brantley broke out of a slump with two hits, including a two-run homer, and George Springer added a two-run shot of his own to power Houston over Oakland.

Wade Miley (1-1) allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings to win his home debut for Houston after losing his first start this season at Tampa Bay. Will Harris got the last out of the sixth and Josh James, Chris Devenski and Framber Valdez pitched one inning apiece to complete the six-hitter.

The Astros were up 1-0 with nobody out in the fifth when Springer launched a 90 mph fastball from Aaron Brooks (1-1) into the left field seats.

                  YANKEES 6, ORIOLES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Aaron Judge homered twice, Clint Frazier hit a three-run shot in the eighth inning and New York beat Baltimore for its first series win of the season.

Judge hit a solo drive in the first inning and connected with a runner on in the third, his first two homers of the year. The 6-foot-7 slugger had 52 in 2017 and 27 last season.

With Baltimore leading 4-3, Miguel Castro (0-1) issued a two-out walk and a single before Frazier put a 2-2 pitch into the left field seats.

Adam Ottavino (1-0) got the win despite allowing two inherited runners to score in the seventh. Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his second save.

                  INDIANS 7, BLUE JAYS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Carrasco became the first Cleveland pitcher since at least 1908 to strike out 12 over five innings.

Carrasco (1-1) was overpowering a week after struggling in his first start of the season. The right-hander completed his 23rd double-figure strikeout game, holding the Blue Jays scoreless until the fifth.

Freddy Galvis hit a one-out homer and Randal Grichuk had an RBI double with two away. With the tying run at the plate, Carrasco struck out Rowdy Tellez on his 90th and final pitch.

Thomas Pannone (0-2) allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings, though he also struck out six.

                  TWINS 6, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Max Kepler and Willians Astudillo hit consecutive homers, Eddie Rosario hit a three-run shot and Minnesota beat Philadelphia.

Making his second start since Tommy John surgery in 2017, Michael Pineda (1-0) allowed two runs and four hits, striking out five in five-plus innings for Minnesota.

Rhys Hoskins went deep for the Phillies, and Bryce Harper had two hits. Both teams are off to 5-2 starts.

Jake Arrieta (1-1) gave up three runs and five hits in seven innings.

                  MARINERS 9, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Jay Bruce hit two solo homers and Tim Beckham connected for a three-run shot, powering Seattle to the victory.

Beckham had four hits for the Mariners, who are off to the best start in club history at 8-2. Seattle has homered in each of its first 10 games, also a franchise first, and leads the majors with 24 long balls.

Mike Leake (2-0) pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball as the Mariners rebounded from a sloppy 10-8 loss in Chicago's home opener.

Tim Anderson and Jose Abreu homered for the White Sox. Touted prospect Eloy Jimenez had his first three-hit game.

Chicago right-hander Lucas Giolito (1-1) allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings.

                  TIGERS 7, ROYALS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Christin Stewart hit a two-out grand slam in the seventh inning, lifting Detroit to the win.

The Tigers trailed 4-2 in the seventh but rallied against Kansas City's struggling bullpen. Kevin McCarthy (0-1) allowed three hits and a hit batter.

Whit Merrifield, Jorge Soler and Hunter Dozier homered for the Royals.

Shane Greene pitched a perfect ninth and now has saves in all six Detroit victories this season - without blowing any. The Tigers have won four straight, and the Royals have dropped five in a row.

Victor Alcantara (2-0) got three outs for the win.

                  PIRATES 6, REDS 5, 10 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kevin Newman hit a game-ending double in the 10th inning, lifting Pittsburgh to its third straight win and giving Cincinnati its seventh straight loss.

With one out in the 10th, Francisco Cervelli singled off Raisel Iglesias (0-2). Newman drove the first pitch he saw to the 410-foot left-center notch at PNC Park, and Cervelli easily beat the relay home. It was the first game-ending hit of Newman's career.

Pittsburgh's Francisco Liriano (1-0) struck out two in the top half of the inning.

Cincinnati star Joey Votto tied it in the eighth with his first home run of the year, a solo shot off Keone Kela. It was Kela's second blown save in five appearances.

                  GIANTS 6, RAYS 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Brandon Belt homered and drove in three before an unusually small home crowd, and San Francisco beat Tampa Bay.

Steven Duggar had three RBIs and Joe Panik scored twice to help San Francisco snap a three-game losing streak behind a breakout day from its offense. Belt had an RBI single in the third and hit a two-run, opposite-field home run off Ryan Yarbrough (1-1) as part of a four-run fifth.

The game drew 31,828, the smallest at Oracle Park since Sept. 1, 2010. The Giants set an NL record with 530 consecutive sellouts at their waterfront ballpark from 2010-17.

Travis Bergen (1-0) retired one batter in relief of starter Jeff Samardzija to earn his first career victory. Will Smith pitched the ninth for his third save.

                  MARLINS 4, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Jorge Alfaro homered twice, including a tiebreaking, two-run shot in the ninth inning, and Miami stopped Atlanta's four-game winning streak.

Alfaro, a right-handed hitter, homered to the opposite field on both swings. His first long ball came off Braves starter Kyle Wright and the second one off reliever A.J. Minter (0-1).

Sergio Romo (1-0) faced the minimum in the eighth, getting knocked down on Josh Donaldson's pinch-hit liner but scrambling to throw him out, and retired Ozzie Albies on a fly ball in the ninth.

Adam Conley got two outs to earn his first save.

                      Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……

                      13) Virginia 63, Auburn 62— Wow. Virginia led 57-47 with 5:03 left, then went in the ashcan, not scoring again until they hit a 3-ball with 0:07.4 left, after Auburn had scored 14 consecutive points. Auburn fouled a 3-point shooter with 0:00.6 left; the kid makes all three foul shots and the Cavaliers are playing for the national title.

                      12) Texas Tech 61, Michigan State 51— Defense ruled in Minneapolis Saturday; Texas Tech held Spartans to 31% from floor in a slow 60-possession slugfest, and advance to their first national title game. Spartans were 8-23 inside arc, 7-24 on the arc. Tom Izzo drops to 2-6 in national semifinal games; you have to win a hell of a lot to get to eight Final Fours.

                      11) Not sure why this happened, but Cubs/Red Sox still haven’t played a home game yet, and both teams are off to ugly starts, Chicago at 2-6, Boston at 2-8.

Cubs especially look like a team that didn’t have any spring training; they’re first team since at least 1960 to commit catcher’s interference three games in a row.

                      10) Since 1984, 68 baseball teams started the season 1-6; only 3 of those 68 teams made the playoffs that year.

                      9) Rockets 120, Knicks 96— Houston led this game 72-43 at halftime Friday night, so it was never in doubt, but with 1:47 left and the subs playing out the string, the Rockets’ bench was mostly empty, with the starters off to the locker room, in a surprising show of disrespect. Only guy who stuck around on the Houston bench was former Knick Iman Shumpert.

Houston coach Mike D’Antoni missed the game with the flu; assistant Jeff Bzdelik was coaching the team. There is no rule against this, but it shows a lack of class.

                      8) 26 of first 55 (47.3%) replay reviews this baseball season resulted in a reversal.

                      7) Coaching carousel:
                      — Vanderbilt hired Jerry Stackhouse as its new basketball coach.
                      — Buffalo promoted assistant Jim Whitesell to head coach.
                      — Georgia State hired former Siena coach/Tennessee ass’t Rob Lanier as its coach.
                      — Elon hired Mike Schrage as its coach.

                      6) Antoine Pettway is an assistant basketball coach at Alabama; he will be working for his 4th different head coach in Tuscaloosa next season. New coach Nate Oats retained Pettway when he was hired last week. Unusual for an assistant coach to stay so long at one place, but he also played at Alabama, and his wife went to school there, too.

                      5) St John’s assistant coach Matt Abdelmassih left for Nebraska; now his big recruit for the Red Storm this year, JC point guard Cam Mack has asked for his release from St John’s.

                      4) Since 2000, only one major league pitcher has thrown 140+ pitches in an April game; that was Sterling Hitchcock in 2000, and he had Tommy John surgery before 2000 was over.

                      3) Baseball injuries:
                      — Colorado Rockies put Ryan McMahon on the IL wit a sprained elbow. Rockies called up Josh Fuentes to replace him; Fuentes is Nolan Arenado’s cousin.
                      — Red Sox put IF Brock Holt (scratched cornea) on the IL after his 2-year old son poked him in the eye.

                      2) Vlade Divac, Sidney Moncrief, Al Attles and Jack Sikma were among 12 people voted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend.

                      1) Some people never learn, I mean really never learn.

A Florida man was arrested and charged with burglary after police say he broke into cars in the parking lot of the jail from which he had just been released on grand theft charges.

                      Oy.

                        April 6, 2019

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

                        MIGHTY, MIGHTY MARINERS

Seattle has been swinging big in 2019, entering its series finale against the White Sox leading the majors with 24 homers. All that power has the Mariners off to an 8-2 start, best in club history. Jay Bruce went deep twice and Tim Beckham added a three-run shot in a 9-2 win Saturday over Chicago. Bruce leads the club with five homers, and Beckham and Domingo Santana are next with four each - all three of those players were added in the offseason, part of a rebuild by general manager Jerry Dipoto.

                        MILE HIGH SPOTLIGHT

Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN makes its first appearance at Coors Field since 2001 when Nolan Arenado and the Rockies host Justin Turner and the Los Angeles Dodgers, who beat Colorado in a one-game tiebreaker for the NL West title last season.

                        COLD CRUSH

Chris Davis is likely to get back into the lineup for Baltimore still seeking his first hit of 2019. The 33-year-old is 0 for 19 with 11 strikeouts this season - including 0 for 2 Saturday off the bench - and he's 0 for 40 dating to Sept. 14. Davis still has four years left on his $161 million contract, and Baltimore is hesitant to cut him loose. ''I'm seeing a guy who's giving a great effort. It's just not happening right now,'' manager Brandon Hyde said. ''We wanted to get him off to a good start. It's not the start he wanted to get off to, but I'm going to continue to play him and continue to support him and find the right matchups for him to try to get him off the schneid early.''

                        ONE STEP AT A TIME

Now that the Reds halted their 30-inning scoreless drought, they'll try to go further and snap a seven-game skid when they play their series finale at Pittsburgh. Cincinnati's longest streak without a run since 2015 ended Saturday when Kyle Farmer hit a two-run homer in the third. But the Reds are winless since taking their season opener against the Pirates under new manager David Bell. They entered Saturday with a major league-low .157 batting average and only three homers. ''We've been struggling to get the wins and we need to do that for sure,'' Bell said. ''But at the same time, I think scoring five runs after not scoring for a few days was big. I think we can build on that.''

                        STARTING HOT

Cleveland's starting pitchers have dominated Toronto over the first three games of their four-game set, and Mike Clevinger looks to do the same in the finale. Trevor Bauer pitched seven hitless innings Thursday, Shane Bieber allowed two runs in six innings Friday and Carlos Carrasco became the first Indians pitcher since at least 1908 to strike out 12 over five innings Saturday. Clevinger struck out a career-high 12 in his first start this season against the White Sox, and more swings and misses are likely against a Blue Jays club that has scored two or fewer runs in seven of its 10 games.

                        MAD MAX

Max Scherzer (0-2, 2.13 ERA) makes his third start in Washington's first eight games of the season when the Nationals play the rubber game of their series against the NL East rival New York Mets at Citi Field. The three-time Cy Young Award winner hasn't lost three straight starts since 2015, his first season in Washington. He faces Zack Wheeler and a Mets team that is 6-2 after hitting five homers off Nationals pitching Saturday.
