    • Rays beat Red Sox 3-2 as Boston files protest over lineup
      July 24, 2019
      By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Charlie Morton struck out 11 over seven innings and the Tampa Bay Rays avoided a three-game sweep by beating David Price and Boston 3-2 in a game that the Red Sox protested on Wednesday.

Confusion reigned in the top of the eighth when a series of defensive changes involving reliever Adam Kolarek prompted Boston manager Alex Cora to protest the game due to the placement of subs into the Rays lineup after the designated hitter was removed.

Kolarek replaced Morton and retired pinch-hitter Sam Travis on a pop fly. The left-hander then shifted to first base when Rays manager Kevin Cash brought in reliever Chaz Roe, who got a fly ball from Mookie Betts.

After Kolarek then returned to the mound and Nate Lowe entered to play first base, Cora met with the umpires, which prompted around a 15-minute stoppage as the umpires discussed the matter.

After the protest was made and the game resumed, Kolarek got a first-pitch grounder from Rafael Devers.

An unhappy Cora again talked with the umpires after the third out, which delayed the start of the bottom on the eighth.

Morton (12-3) allowed two runs and five hits in lowering his AL-best ERA from 2.61 to 2.60. Emilio Pagan pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Price (7-4) went six innings, giving up three runs, four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

      YANKEES 10, TWINS 7

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Didi Gregorius drove in three runs with two of New York's nine extra-base hits in a win over Minnesota.

Aaron Hicks, Gleyber Torres and Edwin Encarnacion each hit solo home runs for the Yankees, who outscored the Twins 30-27 to win this three-game series.

Twins starter Jake Odorizzi (11-5) finished four innings, with 10 hits, nine runs and two walks allowed.

Gregorius hit an RBI double to ignite a four-run second. Mike Tauchman added a two-run triple before the inning was over. Gregorius got three hits.

Eddie Rosario, Marwin Gonzalez and Nelson Cruz each homered for the Twins.

Nestor Cortes Jr. (4-0) picked up the victory after being recalled from Triple-A. Aroldis Chapman pitched a hitless ninth for his 26th save.

      CUBS 4, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Javier Baez homered in the first inning, Kris Bryant and Albert Almora Jr. also went deep, and Chicago beat San Francisco after starter Jon Lester was scratched with an illness.

Baez hit his 25th homer and Bryant his 21st to help Chicago avoid a three-game sweep. The Cubs bounced back from a 5-4, 13-inning loss Tuesday night to give manager Joe Maddon his 442nd win with Chicago, tying Joe McCarthy for fifth in franchise history.

Bryant left in the fifth inning because of soreness in his right knee.

Kyle Ryan (3-1), the second of six pitchers used by the Cubs in place of Lester, retired five batters. Craig Kimbrel allowed two singles in the ninth but got Brandon Belt to fly out for his seventh save.

Earlier in the day, the Cubs optioned shortstop Addison Russell to Triple-A Iowa about two months after Russell completed a 40-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy. The move made room for catcher Willson Contreras to return from the injured list.

The Cubs lead in the NL Central was down to a half-game before tagging San Francisco starter Tyler Beede (3-4) for three home runs in the first four innings.

      ASTROS 4, ATHLETICS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Altuve and George Springer both hit two-run homers to back up another solid start by Justin Verlander and give Houston a win over Oakland.

Houston bounced back after Tuesday's 4-3 loss in 11 innings snapped a six-game winning streak and improved to 9-2 against the Athletics this season.

Verlander (13-4) allowed two singles and one run, which was unearned, while striking out 11 in six innings for his third straight win. Roberto Osuna allowed two hits and a run in the ninth before striking out Chris Herrmann for his 23rd save.

Oakland starter Chris Bassitt (7-5) yielded five hits and four runs in six innings for the loss after winning his previous two starts.

      BREWERS 5, REDS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun and Keston Hiura homered, Yasmani Grandal hit a go-ahead single and Josh Hader made a lights-out relief appearance to lift Milwaukee over Cincinnati to avoid a three-game sweep and end a five-game skid against Cincinnati.

Josh VanMeter hit his second homer and Joey Votto and Scooter Gennett had RBI hits to help Cincinnati build a 4-2 lead against starter Jhoulys Chacin. Braun kept Milwaukee close with a two-run shot in the first, his 15th homer of the season, and the Brewers rallied with Grandal's two-run hit in the fifth.

Matt Albers (5-3) got one out for the win, and Freddy Peralta got his first save. Reds right-hander Lucas Sims (1-1) gave up five runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings, including the homers by Braun and Hiura.

      NATIONALS 3, ROCKIES 2, 1st GAME

      NATIONALS 2, ROCKIES 0, 2ND GAME

WASHINGTON (AP) - Patrick Corbin pitched six shutout innings for his first victory in nearly a month, and Washington Nationals completed a day-night doubleheader sweep of Colorado.

Washington won for the 23rd time in its last 32 home games and improved to 36-15 overall since May 24, the best record in the majors in that span.

The Nationals also posted their fourth straight doubleheader sweep dating to last season.

Colorado has dropped nine of its last 10 and 16 of 19.

In the first game, Anthony Rendon homered on the first pitch of the seventh inning to lift Washington.

Corbin (8-5) left the bases loaded in the first, but allowed just one runner to reach scoring position in his final five innings. He struck out seven.

Sean Doolittle handled the ninth for his second save of the day and his 23rd in 27 chances this year.

Rendon's drive off Carlos Estevez (1-1) was the difference in the opener, a makeup of Monday's postponement. Adam Eaton also hit a solo shot for the Nationals.

Wander Suero (3-5) worked a scoreless seventh for the win.

      PHILLIES 4, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Vince Velasquez pitched impressively into the sixth inning and Philadelphia beat Detroit to finish a quick two-game sweep.

J.T. Realmuto and Nick Williams homered for Philadelphia, which has won five of six.

Bryce Harper had the day off for the Phillies, but they didn't need much offense. Velasquez (3-5) allowed four hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out nine.

Zimmermann (0-8) allowed four runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. Detroit is 8-35 since the start of June.

      DIAMONDBACKS 5, ORIOLES 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Carson Kelly hit a three-run homer, Taylor Clarke pitched six effective innings and Arizona beat Baltimore.

Arizona closed out the series win with Kelly's homer off John Means (8-6) in the fourth inning, a bounce-back performance by Clarke (3-3) and a little late-inning drama.

Arizona's Yoshihisa Hirano and Archie Bradley worked out of bases-loaded jams in the seventh and eighth innings. Greg Holland started the ninth, but was visited by Arizona's trainer after a walk, then was removed by manager Torey Lovullo following another walk. Yoan Lopez got the final three outs for his first career save.

      MARINERS 5, RANGERS 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Mike Leake outpitched Mike Minor in what could be the final start for each before the upcoming trade deadline, Daniel Vogelbach hit a pair of solo home runs, and Seattle beat Texas.

Leake and Minor (8-6) have both been the subject of trade rumors - Minor more than Leake - leading up to next week's trade deadline. But it was Leake with the better performance in his first start since taking a perfect game into the ninth inning last Friday against the Angels. Leake (9-8) threw seven innings, his only mistake giving up a two-out, two-strike home run to Rougned Odor in the sixth inning.

Anthony Bass worked a perfect eighth in relief of Leake and Roenis Elias pitched the ninth for his 13th save.

      CARDINALS 14, PIRATES 8

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Paul DeJong hit a career-high three home runs, including one during a nine-run second inning, and St. Louis routed Pittsburgh.

DeJong, Andrew Knizner and Paul Goldschmidt each hit two-run homers in the second while the Cardinals batted around against starter Jordan Lyles (5-7). St. Louis also had five doubles for a total of eight extra-base hits in the inning, tying a major league record.

St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright (7-7) used 105 pitches to get through five innings and gave up four runs, five hits and four walks while striking out five.

Pirates reliever Keone Kela made his return from the injured list and a two-game suspension for an unspecified violation of his contract by working one scoreless inning. Pirates position players Jose Osuna and Jacob Stallings pitched the final three innings.

Lyles was charged with eight runs, five earned, over 1 2/3 innings.

      INDIANS 4, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Shane Bieber pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a double by Eric Sogard in the seventh inning, and Cleveland beat Toronto.

The Indians improved to 14-4 in July. They are 30-12 since June 4, the best record in the majors over that span.

Bieber (10-3) struck out 10 and walked one in his second career complete game.

Greg Allen had three hits and an RBI and Jose Ramirez had two hits and scored a run.

Marcus Stroman (6-11) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. The loss was Stroman's first since June 20 at Texas, ending a streak of five unbeaten starts.

      ROYALS 2, BRAVES 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Brad Keller allowed four hits in seven innings and added a single for his first career RBI in his Georgia homecoming, and Kansas City beat Julio Teheran and Atlanta.

Keller (7-9) won his fourth straight decision as the Royals swept the two-game series.

Teheran (5-7) allowed four hits with two runs, none earned, in six innings.

Ian Kennedy pitched a perfect ninth for his 19th save.

Ronald Acuna Jr.'s infield hit in the third inning extended his on-base streak to 29 games, the longest active streak in the majors.

      MARLINS 2, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Rookie Zac Gallen pitched seven innings of two-hit ball for his first major league win and Cesar Puello hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning as Miami won its second straight game, beating Chicago.

Puello launched his fourth homer deep to left on the first pitch from Reynaldo Lopez, making a winner out of Gallen (1-2) in his sixth start since joining the Marlins rotation on June 20.

The 23-year-old Gallen struck out nine, walked one and hit two batters in his longest outing to date.

Sergio Romo worked around two singles in the ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances.

Reynaldo Lopez (5-9) allowed four hits and struck out 10 in eight innings, matching the longest outing of his career.

      PADRES 7, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Fernando Tatis Jr. got three hits and San Diego beat Noah Syndergaard and New York for its third win in 11 games since the All-Star break.

San Diego took advantage of two errors by left fielder Dominic Smith and sent the Mets to their fourth loss in five games.

Dinelson Lamet made his fourth start since returning from Tommy John surgery, allowing two runs in four innings while striking out six.

Matt Strahm (4-7) entered in the fifth and struck out four over two perfect innings. Craig Stammen got into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh before Andrew Munoz and Luis Perdomo tossed a hitless inning apiece.

The Padres scored three times in third, helped by a pair of one-out walks by Syndergaard (7-5) and two misplays by Smith with two outs.

          *************************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

          13) Tuesday was a great night of baseball: five extra-inning games, Kole Calhoun throws out the tying run at the plate to end a game in LA, Aaron Hicks makes a great catch to end the game in Minnesota. Very entertaining.

          12) Trea Turner hit for the cycle against Colorado Tuesday, making him the 3rd player ever to hit for the cycle twice against the same team— Christian Yelich did it twice against the Reds LY and Fred Clarke did it over 100 years ago.

          11) Then there was Wednesday’s Boston-Tampa Bay game, where the Rays lost their DH in the 8th inning. Later they put a pitcher at first base for one batter, then re-inserted him as a pitcher one batter later, something that won’t be allowed soon when they change the rules and make relievers face 3+ hitters in each appearance.

Anyway, this seldom happens, and because Angel Hernandez was the umpire, chaos ensued—game was delayed for 19 minutes, as both managers argued their case. Red Sox played the game under protest, and no one involved seemed to know what they were doing.

Final analysis seemed to be that the Rays didn’t declare where they wanted the second pitcher to hit in the batting order, and for some reason, the rule says when that happens, instead of the umpire simply asking them, the ump can put they pitcher wherever he sees fit. Weird rule.

Rays won the game; they’re 58-47, Red Sox are 56-47.

          10) The current collective bargaining agreement in baseball stipulates that any player who joins the active roster of a new team is entitled to seven days of meal money and seven days in a hotel. At a rate of $31.50 per day, the meal money comes out to about $220. Players are usually put up at an upscale hotel, like a Hilton.

          9) Green Bay Packers released DT Mike Daniels, he was due to make $7.6M in the last year of his contract- the move clears over $8.3M in cap space for the Packers.

          8) Baseball stuff:
          — Twins DFA’d P Blake Parker
          — New York put C Gary Sanchez (groin strain) on the IL.
          — Cubs activated Willson Contreras from the IL, sent Addison Russell to AAA.
          — A’s DFA’d C Nick Hundley, couple days after he caught a no-hitter in the minors.

          7) Something I learned today: Rogers Hornsby was a coach for the ’62 Mets.

          6) When Andrew Cashner was traded from San Diego to the Marlins in 2016, he had to shave his beard- Miami had a no-beard policy. Before that, Cashner hadn’t shaved in five years.

          5) Pac-12’s football title game moves from Santa Clara to Las Vegas into the Raiders’ new dome, starting in 2021.

Mountain West Conference should do that, too.

          4) Oakland, Tampa Bay both have a weird schedule this football season:
          — Raiders play Weeks 1-2 at home, then play at Minnesota, at Indy and play the Bears over in London. After a bye week, they play at Green Bay, at Houston.
          — Bucs play Weeks 4-5 at LA, New Orleans, then play Carolina over in London; after their bye week, they play at Tennessee, at Seattle.

So the Raiders play at home in Week 2, then not again until Week 9.
Buccaneers play at home in Week 3, then not again until Week 10.

          3) Eagles are only NFL team this season that plays three true road games in three weeks.

Playing that third week in row on the road used to be a death trap spread-wise, but the last four years, NFL teams playing their third straight week in true road games are 7-6 vs spread.

          2) Since 2010, NFL teams are 11-21 vs spread in their first home game after playing those three straight weeks on the road. That I wouldn’t have guessed.

          1) NFL has worked hard to avoid this situation; I mentioned how the Eagles are only team to have three straight weeks with true road games. As recently as 1997, that happened 11 times; it happened eight times in 2000.

            • LEADING OFF: Scherzer returns, Red Sox protest, Gallo out
              July 24, 2019
              By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

              BACK TO MAX

Nationals ace Max Scherzer is set to start against Colorado after recovering from inflammation under his right shoulder. The 34-year-old right-hander threw a bullpen Monday and felt ready to go.

An All-Star for the seventh straight season, Scherzer is 9-5 with a 2.30 ERA but has not pitched since July 6. He was 7-0 with a 0.87 ERA in his last seven starts.

              REVIEW CREW

Perhaps there might be a ruling from Major League Baseball on Boston's protest during a 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday.

There was plenty of confusion, plus a delay of about 15 minutes in the eighth inning at Tropicana Field after a series of defensive changes by the Rays.

Reliever Adam Kolarek moved to first base for a batter and Red Sox manager Alex Cora discussed the placement of subs in the batting order with plate umpire Angel Hernandez.

''The pitcher moved to a position and we felt there were some illegal substitutions,'' Cora said. ''It was a mess, and I wasn't even able to keep up with Angel. So we protested the game, and we'll see where it goes.''

              GALLO OUT

Texas slugger Joey Gallo has been sent home to see a hand specialist after leaving Tuesday's game with a sore right wrist that's bothered him for a while. X-rays were negative, and Rangers manager Chris Woodward said an MRI was inconclusive.

Woodward said he thinks a stint on the injured list is likely. Gallo is hitting a career-best .253 with 22 homers and a .986 OPS this season.

              NEED DIRECTIONS?

Aaron Judge and the Yankees visit Fenway Park for the first time this year to open a four-game series. Boston has made two trips to Yankee Stadium this season and the longtime rivals also played in London.

Masahiro Tanaka (7-5, 4.00 ERA) starts for AL East-leading New York against Rick Porcello (8-7, 5.61).

                Thursday, July 25

The Twins and White Sox tangle on the south side, and it's RHP Jose Berrios facing RHP Lucas Giolito in an impressive pitching matchup. As such, this one should be a pitcher's duel and an under result. The under is 5-0 in Minnesota's past five road games, and 4-0 in their past four inside the American League Central Division. The under is also 3-0-1 in Berrios' past four road starts, 5-0-1 in his past six starts overall and 6-2 in Minnesota's past eight vs. RHP. The White Sox have hit the under in four of the past five overall, while going 4-1 in their past four at home, too. The under is 5-1 in Giolito's past six home outings, and 19-6-3 in his past 28 against divisional foes. In this series, the under is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings, and 5-2 in Giolito's past seven against the Twins.

The Rangers and Athletics square off in the Bay Area on Thursday night with RHP Ariel Jurado and LHP Brett Anderson locking horns. The under is 5-1 in the past six overall for the Rangers, while going 6-1 in their past seven on the road and 5-1 in their past six inside the division. As far as Jurado is concerned, the under is 4-1 in his past five stats overall, and 12-5 in the past 17 in Game 1 of a new series. The under is 5-2 in Oakland's past seven games overall, while going 4-0 in Anderson's past four starts, and 6-0 in his past six inside the division. While the under is the dominant trend for both sides lately, against each other the over is 5-1 in the past six meetings in Oakland, and 9-3 in the past 12 battles overall in the series.

The Orioles have RHP Jimmy Yacabonis facing LHP Jose Suarez of the Angels in what could be a high-scoring affair. The under is 2-0-2 in the past four for the O's, while going 4-0-2 in the past six on the road. The under is 5-0-1 in the past six for the O's following a loss, too. The over is 7-2-3 in their past 12 against a left-handed starting pitcher, however. For the Halos, the over is 5-1-1 in Suarez's past seven starts, and 4-1 in their past five vs. RHP. The over is also 5-1-1 in their past seven against the AL East. While the under is 12-3-2 in the past 17 overall in this series, the over is the play with two shaky pitchers on the bump.

                Wind Report
All across Thursday's MLB venues, the winds will be light and variable. Not one stadium will face a wind of more than 8 mph, so enjoy.

                Friday, July 26

The Braves roll out All-Star RHP Mike Soroka against Phillies RHP Zach Eflin in a matchup at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The under is an impressive 5-1-1 in the past seven for the Braves against the National League east, while going 8-2 in their past 10 on the road against teams with a winning record. The under is also 5-1-1 in the past seven starts on the road by Soroka, while going 3-1-1 in the past five overall. The under is 18-6-2 in Atlanta's past 26 games overall, while going 9-2 in their past 11 vs. RHP.

For Philadelphia, the under has connected in five in a row, and the under is 4-0 in their past four following a scheduled day off. The under is also a perfect 4-0 in their past four vs. RHP, while going 15-5-1 in the past 21 following a victory. As far as Eflin is concerned, however, the over is 4-1 in his past five starts overall, and 4-1 in his past five when working on five days of rest, too. On a side note, the Braves head to 'The Vault' with five consecutive losses at the stadium.

The Yankees and Red Sox square off at Fenway Park in Game 2 of their four-game set. The Red Sox will have to try and solve LHP James Paxton. The over is 13-6-1 in Boston's past 20 at home vs. LHP, while going 6-2 in the past eight overall against southpaws. The over is also 5-2 in Paxton's past seven on the road, and 7-3-1 in his past 11 starts at a venue with a grass surface. The Yankees also entered Thursday's series opener with the over going 22-5-1 in the past 28 road games against a team with a winning overall mark.

The Tigers and Mariners do battle at T-Mobile Park in SoDo, and it could be a high-scoring affair. LHP Daniel Norris starts for the Tigers, and the over is 4-1-1 in his past six starts overall and 3-0-1 in his past four on the road. The over is 9-2-1 in the past 12 against teams with a losing record, 15-5-1 in the past 21 road outings and 7-1-1 in the past nine on the road against losing clubs. For the M's, the over is 19-6-1 in the past 26 against AL Central foes, while going 22-8-1 in the past 31 of Game 1 of a series. The over is also 15-6-1 in the past 22 at home vs. LHP.

                Wind Report
The wind wasn't a problem on Thursday, and the winds will mostly be a non-issue on Friday, too. However, watch the game between the Twins and White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, as there will be breezy conditions from first to third base around 10-13 mph. Outside of that game, though, there is no wind or precipitation in the forecast.

Yankees at Red Sox – 7:10 PM EST

The excitement level for the Yankees (66-35) is at an all-time high with all the runs being scored by this loaded lineup. New York overcame a loss in the series opener at Minnesota to capture the final two games at Target Field, while scoring 24 runs in the two victories. Following Tuesday’s thrilling 14-12 triumph in 10 innings, the Yankees held off the Twins last night, 10-7 as -120 favorites, highlighted by home runs from Edwin Encarnacion, Aaron Hicks, and Gleyber Torres.

New York heads to Fenway Park for the weekend to battle rival Boston as the Red Sox (56-47) couldn’t finish off the sweep of the Rays on Wednesday in a 3-2 loss at Tropicana Field. The Sox split their six-game road trip at Baltimore and Tampa Bay as Boston is in the midst of a 21-game stretch against AL East foes. Eight of the next 11 games are against the Yankees, as the Red Sox have lost six of seven meetings with their arch-rivals, while Boston is hosting New York for the first time this season.

The last matchup between these two squads came in London in late June as the Red Sox were the home team, but were lit up in a pair of losses by allowing 29 runs. The first game saw a rarity as the two starting pitchers didn’t escape the first inning with both Masahiro Tanaka and Rick Porcello allowing six runs apiece. Although the Yankees squandered a 6-0 advantage, New York scored 11 unanswered runs and eventually held off Boston, 17-13 as -155 favorites.

Those two hurlers take the mound this evening at Fenway as Tanaka (7-5, 4.00 ERA) is unbeaten in his last seven starts for New York, although the right-hander’s numbers have dipped in his past four outings. Tanaka has allowed 17 earned runs in his last 19 innings of work, including giving up five runs in an 11-5 victory over Colorado his last time out. The Yankees have split Tanaka’s eight starts away from the Bronx this season, while hitting the OVER in four of his past five road outings.

Porcello (8-7, 5.61 ERA) has been anything but sharp since tossing seven scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory at Minnesota on June 17. The former Cy Young winner has allowed four runs or more in five straight starts, including giving up six runs on three occasions in this stretch. Porcello has been helped out by tremendous run support of late as the Red Sox have scored 10 runs or more in each of his last four outings, as Boston is 3-0 in his past three trips to the mound.

Twins at White Sox – 8:10 PM EST

Minnesota (61-40) was cruising atop the AL Central for the first half of the season, but the Twins’ lead over the Indians has shrunk to two games heading towards the end of July. The Twins have slumped through a 3-7 stretch since winning the first two contests at Cleveland immediately after the All-Star break, which includes the home series loss to the Yankees. Minnesota’s pitching staff has been tagged for 5, 5, 6, 6, 14, and 10 runs the last six games, while the Twins cashed the OVER in each of the past four contests.

The Twins travel to Chicago to face the White Sox (45-54), whose offense was limited to one run in a pair of losses the last two nights to the Marlins. Chicago has lost 10 of its past 13 games since the All-Star break, while being limited to two runs or less nine times in this stretch. Two of the victories came at Tampa Bay as a sizable underdog, while the Sox have plated nine runs in each of their past two series opening wins against the Rays and Marlins.

AL Cy Young hopeful Lucas Giolito (11-4, 3.12 ERA) began the season on fire, but Chicago is 2-4 in his past six outings since the White Sox won 11 of his first 13 starts. Giolito did rebound from a pair of rough outings against the Cubs and Royals by defeating the Rays, 2-1 as a +145 underdog last Saturday. The right-hander struck out nine batters and allowed one run in 6.2 innings as the Sox scored the tying run in the ninth inning and the go-ahead run in the 10th, while Chicago is 4-0 to the UNDER in his past four starts.

Minnesota counters with Jose Berrios (8-5, 2.96 ERA), who is winless in his past four starts. Berrios didn’t allow a run in 5.2 innings of work in his last outing against Oakland, but the A’s rallied for two ninth inning runs in a 5-4 victory at Target Field last Saturday. The Twins have won six of Berrios’ last seven starts against the White Sox since the beginning of the 2018 season, but the lone loss came on June 28 at Guaranteed Rate Field in a 6-4 defeat as a -185 favorite.

These AL Central rivals have met only six times this season as the Twins have captured four meetings, but the Sox took two of three on the South Side last month.

Rangers at Athletics – 10:07 PM EST

Texas (51-51) was one of the most surprising teams over the first three months of the season as the Rangers were in the AL Wild Card conversation. However, the Rangers have slipped up since beating the Astros twice after the All-Star break by losing nine of their past 10 contests. Texas continues its 10-game road swing in Oakland tonight after dropping two of three to last-place Seattle.

The Athletics (58-45) return to the Bay Area following a 3-4 road swing against a pair of American League division leaders in Minnesota and Houston. The A’s have struggled this season with the Astros by dropping nine of 11 matchups, including two of three at Minute Maid Park the last three days. The lone victory for Oakland came in comeback fashion on Tuesday night when the A’s rallied for three runs in the ninth inning and eventually triumphed in extras, 4-3 as a +135 underdog.

Oakland has won 12 of its last 15 games at the Coliseum since mid-June, including a perfect 5-0 homestand against the Mariners and White Sox after the All-Star break. Brett Anderson (9-5, 3.82 ERA) has been solid lately for the A’s by tossing quality starts in seven of his past eight trips to the mound. Oakland owns a 7-1 mark in that eight-start stretch, which includes a 5-3 victory in Arlington back in early June.

The Rangers have won five of their last nine road series openers, although two of those losses came in their past two series at Houston and Seattle. Ariel Jurado (5-6, 4.92 ERA) has struggled in his last three starts by allowing 16 runs in 15 innings against the Astros twice and the Angels. Jurado has made one career start against Oakland and it wasn’t a memorable one as he lost 6-0 last August as a +205 underdog. The opposing pitcher that night was Anderson, who gave up one hit in seven scoreless innings, as Oakland enters tonight’s contest owning a 6-3 record against Texas in 2019.

                              • Goldschmidt homers again as Cardinals sweep Pirates 6-3
                                July 25, 2019
                                By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run homer in Boston's seven-run first inning, and the Red Sox pounded the AL East-leading New York Yankees 19-3 on Thursday night in the opener of their four-game series.

The 19 runs were the most scored by the Red Sox against the Yankees in the 117-year history of the rivalry.

Bogaerts finished with four hits, including a solo shot in the eighth. Andrew Benintendi and Jackie Bradley Jr. had three hits apiece.

New York right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (7-6) allowed 12 runs and 12 hits in 3 1/3 innings. It was the most earned runs ever allowed by a Yankees pitcher against Boston since the earned run became an official stat in 1913.

Rick Porcello (9-7) pitched six innings of three-run ball for Boston.

                                TWINS 10, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Nelson Cruz hit three of Minnesota's five homers and finished with five RBIs, powering the Twins to the rout.

It was the first three-homer game for the six-time All-Star, who has 385 home runs in his career. He became the 10th player in big league history with a three-homer game after turning 39, according to Baseball Prospectus, joining a list that includes Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Frank Thomas and Alex Rodriguez.

Max Kepler and Miguel Sano also connected as Minnesota (62-40) totaled at least five homers for a major league-record ninth time this season, according to STATS. Jose Berrios (9-5) pitched seven effective innings for his first win since June 6.

The White Sox (45-55) dropped 10 games below .500 for the first time this season. Yoan Moncada hit his 19th homer, but Lucas Giolito (11-5) was hit hard by Cruz and company.

                                CARDINALS 6, PIRATES 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt homered in his career-high fourth straight game, helping the Cardinals finish a four-game sweep of the Pirates.

St. Louis (55-47) won for the eighth time in nine games to move into a tie with the idle Chicago Cubs atop the NL Central.

Goldschmidt drove in nine runs and had four of the Cardinals' 12 home runs during the sweep.

Kolten Wong and Dexter Fowler also connected for St. Louis. Miles Mikolas (7-10) allowed three runs in six innings.

Pittsburgh has dropped 11 of 13. Pirates right-hander Joe Musgrove (7-9) was charged with five earned runs in five innings.

                                INDIANS 5, ROYALS 4, 14 INNINGS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jose Ramirez homered in the 14th inning, and the Indians edged the Royals in a game that lasted almost five hours and finished after midnight.

Jake Bauers singled home Jason Kipnis in the 14th off Brian Flynn (2-2) to add an insurance run - and Cleveland needed it.

A.J. Cole earned his first save since May 15, 2015, in his second major league appearance. After allowing the first three batters to reach, Cole retired the next three in order, striking out Bubba Starling to end the game.

Kansas City got one run in the 14th on Jorge Soler's sacrifice fly.

Francisco Lindor homered for the Indians, who remained two games behind AL Central-leading Minnesota. Nick Goody (2-0) threw two scoreless innings for the win.

                                ROCKIES 8, NATIONALS 7

WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington ace Max Scherzer lasted five innings in his return from the injured list, and the Rockies beat the Nationals in a battle of worn-out bullpens.

Ian Desmond led off the ninth with a homer off 42-year-old Fernando Rodney (0-4), who pitched in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader. Rodney then walked Charlie Blackmon, who advanced on a wild pitch and a single by David Dahl, and Daniel Murphy drove in Blackmon with a groundout.

Murphy homered and scored three times for the Rockies, who won for just the fourth time in their past 20 games. Jairo Diaz (3-2) got the win, and Wade Davis earned his 15th save.

Anthony Rendon hit a three-run drive for Washington, which wasted a chance to gain ground on first-place Atlanta in the NL East.

Scherzer had been sidelined by inflammation under his right shoulder. He struggled with his command at times in his first start since July 6.

                                RANGERS 11, ATHLETICS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Danny Santana hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs as slumping Texas won on the road.

Asdrubal Cabrera had three hits and scored twice during the Rangers' highest-scoring game in nearly seven weeks.

Texas won after placing outfielder Joey Gallo on the injured list following wrist surgery earlier in the day. The All-Star slugger will miss at least a month.

Ramon Laureano singled in two runs for Oakland. The A's have lost four of five and hold a half-game lead for the second AL wild card.

Ariel Jurado (6-6) allowed three runs in seven innings in his first win since June 27.

Oakland's Brett Anderson (9-6) gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings.

                                MARINERS 10, TIGERS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Tim Beckham hit his second grand slam of the season and Kyle Seager connected for a solo drive, leading Seattle to the victory.

J.P. Crawford added two hits and scored three times as Seattle won two in a row for the first time in a month. Daniel Vogelbach drove in three runs, and Wade LeBlanc (6-3) pitched six effective innings.

Last-place Detroit lost for the ninth time in 10 games, continuing years of trouble against the AL West. The Tigers finished with just five hits.

John Hicks homered in the third, but Seattle responded with five runs in the bottom half.

Detroit right-hander Drew VerHagen (1-1) was charged with seven runs, six earned, in four innings.

                                METS 4, PADRES 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Jacob deGrom pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, sending the Mets to the win.

Todd Frazier hit a two-run double as New York built a four-run lead against Eric Lauer, the most runs the Mets have scored in the first inning during deGrom's 160 starts.

DeGrom (6-7) struck out nine while extending his scoreless streak to 17 innings. The ace from the Sunshine State has a 1.86 ERA in 52 day games, best in the majors since at least 1913 for pitchers with at least 200 innings.

Mets closer Edwin Diaz entered for the ninth and was pulled after Manny Machado drilled a base hit off his left big toe. Diaz limped off the field, and X-rays were negative.

Lauer (5-8) was pulled after 2 1/3 innings.
