• Thursday’s 6-pack

Odds to win the NASCAR race in Charlotte Sunday night:

3-1— Kyle Busch

9-2— Kevin Harvick

6-1— Martin Truex

7-1— Brad Keselowski

8-1— Joey Logano, Chase Elliott

14-1— Clint Bowyer

Quote of the Day
“I am very excited about the opportunity to lead the University of Michigan’s storied basketball program. I have been very fortunate to be part of a great championship organization in the Miami Heat for the last nine years — three as a player and six as a coach. It was always going to take something incredibly special to for me to leave Miami; however, I know in my heart this is the right place and the right time.”
Juwan Howard

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) Michigan hired Juwan Howard as its new basketball coach; Howard had been as assistant with the Miami Heat and of course is a Michigan alum, playing in the Fab Five era.

12) Giancarlo Stanton looks like an NFL tight end, but good grief, he gets hurt a lot.

First, a biceps strain; rehab from that led to a shoulder issue. Then, in his first rehab game in Florida, he strains a calf muscle trying to avoid a pitch in a Class A game, so now he’s been shut down another 7-10 days. Oy.

Stanton has been on my fantasy team since since he was an 18-year old in the Florida State League, so I’ve been down this road before:
— Missed 39 games in 2012
— Missed 46 games in 2013
— Missed 88 games in 2015
— Missed 43 games in 2016
— Missed 45 games already this season.

Guy gets paid $30M a year; would be nice if he played more.

11) Monday is Stanton Bobblehead Day in the Bronx; that should go over well.

10) Race for the two Wild Cards in the AL:
— Tampa Bay 27-18
— Boston 25-23
— Cleveland 25-23
— Texas 24-23
— Oakland 25-25
— LA Angels 22-26

9) Gleyber Torres has 11 homers this year; nine of them were against Baltimore.

8) Iowa passed a sports betting bill this week; their goal is to begin taking wagers around August 10th.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Cleveland DFA’d OF Carlos Gonzalez.
— Rockies put P Wade Davis (oblique) on IL.
— Angels put C Kevan Smith on 7-day concussion IL.

6) St Louis Blues came into the NHL in the fall of 1967, and made the Stanley Cup finals their first three years in the NHL, going 0-12 in those finals. This will be the first time since then that they’re back in the finals, playing the same Bruins’ squad they lost to in 1970.

5) Colonial Country Club is hosting a PGA Tour event this week for the 72nd consecutive year, the second-longest streak behind Augusta National.

4) Vanderbilt hired Faragi Phillips as an assistant basketball coach; he went 105-31 in four years as a head coach at the high school level in Memphis, winning two state titles. Memphis is a very fertile recruiting ground in basketball.

3) Future NFL Draft sites: 2021: Cleveland, 2023: Kansas City. No word on 2022.

NFL Combine is staying in Indianapolis for at least the next couple years.

2) A’s 7, Indians 2— Oakland won its last six games, is back at .500 (25-25).

1) Robinson Cano actually ran out a ground ball last night, so of course he leaves the game right after with a strained quad muscle.

• LEADING OFF: Cano exits after grounder, JD Martinez out
May 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

AILING

The Mets will check Robinson Cano, a day after he left the game against Washington because of tightness in his left quadriceps.

Cano appeared to hurt the leg while running to first base when he grounded out in the third inning. The 36-year-old second baseman is batting .241 with three homers and 13 RBIs. The eight-time All-Star was acquired by New York from Seattle in December.

Twice last weekend Cano failed to run out grounders in Miami, both of them resulting in double plays.

MISSING MARTINEZ

Boston star J.D. Martinez wasn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game at Toronto because of a sore back and manager Alex Cora says the slugger is unlikely to play again until Friday.

Cora said he was hesitant to play Martinez in the series finale, citing the artificial surface and the early afternoon start. The Red Sox will certainly miss Martinez's presence in the lineup, but the Blue Jays will not - he has 13 home runs and 41 RBIs in 40 career games against them.

Martinez is hitting .308 this season with nine homers and 28 RBIs.

RETURN OF THE ACE

Following a brutal start to the season, Aaron Nola has looked much more like the ace pitcher the Phillies expect him to be. The 25-year-old right-hander finished third in the NL Cy Young voting last season, but had a 7.45 ERA after his first four starts this year.

Nola has found his form over the past month, giving up just one earned run in four of his last five starts and struck out 12 against Colorado in his previous outing. He'll be on the mound for Philadelphia at Wrigley Field facing the Chicago Cubs and lefty Jon Lester.

HOME ISN'T HELPING

The Cleveland Indians are going to have to climb out of a hole if they want to win the AL Central for a fourth straight season. The Indians (25-23) were just swept at home in three games by Oakland and have a 13-16 record since the middle of April. Now they host a four-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Indians will start right-hander Adam Plutko, who gave up just one run and one hit in six innings during his first start of the season in a win over Baltimore last Saturday.

Nationals (-145, 7) at Mets – 12:10 PM EST

The fall from grace for Washington (19-30) is a spectacular one this season as the Nationals are one of two National League teams to win less than 20 games. Washington has been swept only once this season, but the Nats are on the verge of receiving the broom treatment for a second time if they can’t beat the Mets (23-25) in the series finale at Citi Field.

New York knocked off Washington in Monday’s series opener following a disastrous weekend in Miami in which the Mets were swept. The Mets walked-off past the Nationals on Tuesday, 6-5 in a back-and-forth contest, while busting out for six runs in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s 6-1 victory.

Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer went toe-to-toe in a battle of the last two NL Cy Young winners as the Nationals led, 1-0 headed to the bottom of the eighth. Juan Lagares cleared the bases with a three-run double, followed by a three-run homer from newly acquired Rajai Davis to give New York only its third win in 14 Game 3’s of a series in 2019.

It’s Stephen vs. Steven in Thursday’s finale on the mound with Strasburg taking the ball for the Nats and Matz going for the Mets. Strasburg bounced back from a pair of road defeats to the Brewers and Dodgers (in which Washington was shut out each time) to silence the Cubs’ bats in a 5-2 victory last Saturday. The Nats’ fireballer dominated Chicago by striking out seven batters in eight innings of work for his fourth victory of the season.

Strasburg split a pair of starts against the Mets to open the season as he allowed four earned runs in six innings of an 11-8 home setback on March 30, followed by a 4-0 victory at Citi Field less than a week later by tossing 6.2 scoreless innings. Matz is coming off consecutive road losses at Milwaukee and Miami, but the New York southpaw is unbeaten in three starts at Citi Field this season. In his two starts against Washington, the Mets are 2-0, although he has produced two no-decisions in a pair of games that easily hit the OVER.

Rockies at Pirates (-130, 8 ½) – 12:35 PM EST

Colorado (22-25) began its six-game trip through the Keystone State by losing all three contests at Philadelphia, including two by one run each. The Rockies have rebounded nicely by capturing the first two games at Pittsburgh as Colorado seeks its first sweep of a three-game set this season.

German Marquez tossed eight innings of scoreless ball in Monday’s 5-0 shutout of the Pirates (24-22), while Jon Gray went seven innings and scattered seven hits in a 9-3 rout. Colorado scored three runs in the first inning, three in the third, and three in the fifth, while all nine Rockies’ starters recorded at least one hit. The Rockies’ offense continues to perform well of late by scoring five runs or more in six of the past eight games, while cashing the OVER five times in this span.

The Pirates wrapped up their 11-game road trip with three straight wins at San Diego, but the offense has produced a total of three runs in the past 18 innings. Pittsburgh owns a 7-1 record with Jordan Lyles on the mound, including a pair of road underdog victories over the Padres and Cardinals his two outings. Lyles struck out a season-high 12 batters in seven innings of a 5-3 triumph at San Diego last Friday, while the right-hander has compiled a 1.97 ERA on the season.

Antonio Senzatela has put together solid numbers away from Coors Field by owning a 2.95 ERA on the road, compared to a 7.27 ERA at home. The Rockies have not lost back-to-back starts made by Senzatela this season, as Colorado fell at Philadelphia, 2-1 in his last outing. It also marked the first loss by Colorado in the right-hander’s four road starts this season, while the Rockies are 5-1 to the OVER in Senzatela’s last six outings.

Phillies at Cubs (-107) – 2:20 PM EST

Both these teams have eyes on October baseball as Chicago (28-18) seeks the series victory over Philadelphia (28-20). The Phillies held off the Cubs in extra innings on Monday, 5-4 thanks to the game-tying run scored in the ninth and the go-ahead run scored in the 10th on a J.T. Realmuto solo home run. The Cubs bounced back on Tuesday with a 3-2 walk-off win to snap Philadelphia’s four-game winning streak thanks to Javier Baez’s pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Chicago erased a 3-0 deficit in Wednesday’s 8-4 triumph over Philadelphia as the Cubs plated eight unanswered runs from the third through the seventh inning. Former Phillies’ standout Cole Hamels didn’t last to the fifth inning as he allowed nine hits and three runs in four innings, but right-hander Tyler Chatwood tossed four solid innings of relief for the win. The Cubs went deep three times, including Anthony Rizzo’s game-tying three-run shot in the third inning.

Jon Lester tries to rebound from his worst start of the season at Washington in which the Cubs’ left-hander was tagged for five runs and 10 hits in 5.1 innings of a 5-2 setback. The Cubs are 3-1 in Lester’s four starts a Wrigley Field, while he has allowed only one earned run in this stretch. Lester dominated the Phillies last September at Citizens Bank Park by tossing six scoreless innings in an 8-1 rout.

Aaron Nola counters for Philadelphia as the Phillies’ ace has rebounded from a tough start to the season. Nola gave up 15 earned runs in his first three outings, but the former LSU standout has given up only 10 earned runs in his past six trips to the mound. Nola struck out a season-high 12 batters in six innings of a 2-1 victory over the Rockies his last time out, while the Phillies are 2-0 in two road starts this season.

• Twins, Angels postponed, will be made up on Thursday
May 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Very little has slowed the Minnesota Twins of late. A rare Southern California rain shower did the trick Wednesday night.

The Twins had their series finale against the Los Angeles Angels postponed because of weather and unplayable field conditions. It has been rescheduled for Thursday.

It is only the third postponement at Angel Stadium since 1995 and the 12th since the stadium opened in 1966. The last postponement occurred on July 19, 2015, against Boston.

Minnesota is 31-16 and has a seven-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central, which is the earliest it has been up that much in the division. The previous earliest was June 24, 2002, when they were seven games ahead of the Chicago White Sox.

The Twins - who haven't won a division title since 2010 - have taken five of six on this road trip and are trying to get a sweep in Anaheim for the first time since 1996.

Manager Rocco Baldelli wasn't thrilled with the decision to postpone the game, but he also said he realized as the visiting team that it wasn't his call.

It rained at Angel Stadium two hours before Wednesday's game, causing puddles to form in both left and right field. The grounds crew worked for over an hour to remove water from the outfield, but conditions remained unplayable.

''I think it was one of those circumstances where we play in tough weather a lot and have probably played in circumstances similar,'' Baldelli said. ''It was clear that it was not a clearly unplayable field and it was not a clearly, clearly playable field. There was some sort of gray area where we were sitting.''

Martin Perez (6-1), who had been scheduled to start for Minnesota on Wednesday, will take the mound against Los Angeles' Matt Harvey (2-3).

Minnesota has been a force on the road as it leads the majors in wins (17), batting average (.287) and runs per game (6.60) away from Target Field.

The Twins are batting .313 with 14 home runs and have outscored the Mariners and Angels 51-22 on the current road trip. Minnesota took three of four at Seattle before arriving in Southern California and winning the first two against the Angels.

''We have one of the best offenses in the league and can change the game in one inning,'' designated hitter Marwin Gonzalez said. ''We are on a good roll right now. It's super early but we are winning series. If you play good in short series you are going to win.''

Angels manager Brad Ausmus said there was too much water in the outfield to be able to play.

''As they moved the water around, it seems to disappear. You don't see the puddling but when you stepped on it, it would just come up around your shoe,'' he said. ''I couldn't imagine trying to field a ball coming through that water, picking it up soaking wet and trying to make a throw to a base, never mind what could happen if your cleats didn't catch.''

The Angels have dropped three straight after winning the first two on their homestand.

ROSTER MOVE

The Angels placed C Kevan Smith on the seven-day concussion injured list after he took a foul ball of the mask during the fourth inning of Tuesday's game. In a corresponding move, the Angels selected the contract of C Dustin Garneau from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Under My Thumb

The Rays and Indians kick off a four-game set in Cleveland on Thursday evening. Tampa Bay enters the contest hitting the under in seven of their past eight road contests, while going 4-1 in the past five away from home against right-handed starting pitchers. The under is also 23-10-1 in the past 34 road outings against a team with a winning home mark, too. However, the over is 10-4-1 in Tampa Bay's past 15 aginst teams with a winning overall record, and the over is 7-1-1 in the previous nine against a starting pitcher with a WHIP less than 1.15.

For the Indians, the under is 5-1 across the past six games at Progressive Field, while going 19-7-1 in the past 27 games overall. The under is also 5-1 in the past six against teams with a winning percentage over .600, and the under is 4-1 across the past five against American League East opponents. As far as Adam Plutko is concerned, the under is 5-0 in his past five home outings, and 7-1 in his past eight games overall. In addition, the under is 4-0 in his past four against teams with a winning overall record, and 7-0 in his past seven assignments at a venue with a grass field.

As far as head-to-head, the over is 4-1-1 in the past six meetings in Cleveland, while the under is 7-2-1 in the past 10 meetings overall. As a bonus, Tampa Bay is 4-1 in the past five meetings, and 4-1 in the previous five battles in Cleveland, too.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, May 23

The White Sox will square off with the Astros in Game 4 of a four-game set. The under is 4-1 in Chicago's past five, with the lone exception being Wednesday's 9-4 victory in Houston. The under is also 7-2 in the past nine road outings, while going 6-2 across their past eight against teams with a winning overall record. In addition, the under is 10-4 in the past 14 against right-handed starting pitchers, while going 4-1 in Lucas Giolito's past five outings. The under is also 7-1-1 in the past nine road outings by Giolito against teams with a winning overall mark, and 14-6-3 in Giolito's past 23 outings overall.

For the Astros, the under has connected in six of the past seven contests, while going 4-1 in his past five vs. RHP. The over is 9-3-2 in Houston's past 14 at home against losing teams, and 9-4-2 in the past 15 overall aginst teams with a losing record. In this series, the under is 18-8-1 in the past 27 meetings, while going 11-4 in the past 15 meetings at Minute Maid Park. The under has also connected in five of the past six games with umpire Brian O'Nora behind home plate.

Wind Report
The wind will be blowing out at an 11-14 mph clip to the left-center field power alley in the NL East battle between the Nationals and Mets at 12:10 p.m. EDT at Cit Field. The wind will also be blowing out at a 12-15 mph clip for the Rockies-Pirates series finale at 12:35 p.m. EDT at PNC Park in the Steel City.

Winds will also be kicking up in the Midwest, as the interleague battle between the Marlins and Tigers in Detroit will face breezy conditions. The winds will be gusting 17-20 mph in Motown, and the winds will be blowing 12-15 mph at the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field for the Phillies-Cubs battle. In Cleveland, the Rays and Indians will experience winds of 14-17 mph blowing left to right.

Friday, May 24

The Dodgers and Pirates open a three-game set in the Steel City on Friday. Wind Report
The winds will be much calmer across MLB venues on Friday, and those stadiums with wind will see a much different direction. The Tigers and Mets kick off an interleague battle at Citi Field, and they'll face winds of 11-14 mph blowing in from the left-center field power alley into the face of the batters.

The only exception will be for the Yankees-Royals battle at Kauffman Stadium at 7:15 p.m. CDT, as the teams will see winds of 10-13 mph blowing out to the left-center field power alley.

STREAKING

Lucas Giolito, Chicago White Sox (5-1, 3.35 ERA, $585):
Giolito has bounced back from a bit of a rocky start and is dealing at the moment. The right-hander has pitched to a 0.93 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .225 on base percentage over his past three starts. Unfortunately, those opponents have been the Indians and Blue Jays twice and things will be a little tougher tonight when he faces off against the Astros. The White Sox are currently +162 road dogs for tonight’s game.

SLUMPING

Matthew Boyd, Detroit Tigers (4-4, 3.41 ERA, $176):
The Tigers’ southpaw has cooled off a bit after a hot start to the season. In Boyd’s last two starts he has allowed seven earned runs on 12 hits (including four dingers!) in just 10.1 innings. His strikeouts are also down as he also only has 10 punchouts in those 10.1 innings. That equates to an 8.81 strikeouts per nine innings as opposed to 11.27 in his first eight starts. Tonight Boyd and the Tigers are -160 home favorites against the visiting Marlins.

3 STRIKES

MONEY MAN

Jordan Lyles gets the start this afternoon for the Pirates and no starter has been more profitable for bettors this season. Lyles has made his backers $780 this season (based on $100 wagers) in his eight starts this season. The right-hander has been a pleasant surprise for the Buccos, pitching to a 1.97 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP this season. He and the Pirates are currently -136 home favorites against the visiting Rockies.

RARE CHALK

The Tigers are currently -156 favorites for this afternoon’s interleague matchup with the visiting Marlins, which on the surface seems to be nothing remarkable. Teams are -150 home favorites all the time, right? Well, unless you are the Tigers. Detroit hasn’t been this big a favorite since April 22nd of 2018 when it hosted the Royals. What’s even crazier about that is that the Tigers starter was Francisco Liriano.

• Twins tie franchise record with 8 homers, beat Twins 16-7
May 23, 2019
By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Miguel Sano and Jonathan Schoop each hit two of Minnesota's franchise record-tying eight home runs and the Twins hammered Matt Harvey and the Los Angeles Angels 16-7 Thursday.

C.J. Cron homered, doubled twice and singled twice for the Twins. Max Kepler, Jorge Polanco and Eddie Rosario also homered for Minnesota.

It was the third time in franchise history - dating to their days as the Washington Senators - and second time this season the Twins homered eight times. Before doing it April 20 against Baltimore, the last time it happened was in 1963 against Washington.

Schoop drove in four runs and Sano three as the Twins won six of seven on their trip that began in Seattle and wound up with their first sweep in Anaheim since 1996.

There were a total of 11 home runs in this game, which was originally set for Wednesday but postponed due to unplayable field conditions following a pregame storm.

The eight home runs also tied the Angels mark for most allowed. It previously happened in 2005 against Texas and 1996 vs. Oakland. Tommy La Stella hit his first grand slam in the ninth for the Angels, who have dropped four straight. David Fletcher and Brian Goodwin also homered for Los Angeles.

Four of the seven hits Matt Harvey (2-4) allowed in 2 2/3 innings went over the wall.

Twins starter Martin Perez (7-1) went five innings and yielded two runs on five hits.

YANKEES 6, ORIOLES 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Mychal Givens walked Aaron Hicks with the bases loaded to force in the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning, and New York completed a four-game sweep of Baltimore.

Clint Frazier and Luke Voit homered for the Yankees, who went deep 13 times in the series.

Down 4-1 in the eighth, the Orioles mounted a comeback. Two walks and an RBI single by Trey Mancini brought in Tommy Kahnle (2-0) from the bullpen, and Renato Nunez tied it with a three-run drive.

In the ninth, Gleyber Torres drew a walk and Gary Sanchez singled before Givens (0-2) walked DJ LeMahieu to load the bases. After going 3-0 on Hicks, Givens got two strikes before missing badly outside.

Zack Britton worked the ninth for his second save.

Baltimore has lost six straight. The Orioles own the worst record in the majors (15-35) and worst record at home (6-19).

RAYS 7, INDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Ryan Yarbrough handled Cleveland's lineup into eighth inning in his first start this season and Kevin Kiermaier legged out a three-run, inside-the-park homer when two outfielders collided in the win for Tampa Bay.

Tommy Pham, Avisail Garcia and Willy Adames hit solo homers off Adam Plutko (1-1) as the Rays improved baseball's best road record to 16-7.

Yarbrough (3-1) allowed two runs and four hits in a career-high 7 1/3 innings.

The Indians dropped their fourth straight and nearly lost two more players to injury on a freakish play in the sixth when rookie left fielder Oscar Mercado and center fielder Leonys Martin slammed into each other trying to catch the ball.

Mercado took the worst of the crash as Martin's left knee drove hard into his right hip. As the two Indians players lay helplessly in the grass, the ball ricocheted toward the left-field corner and Kiermaier easily circled the bases for the first inside-the-parker allowed by Cleveland since 2008.

METS 6, NATIONALS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Carlos Gomez hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning that helped New York overcome a Washington comeback that started after Nationals manager Dave Martinez's heated ejection.

Gomez's first homer of the season came off Wander Suero (1-4) as the Mets completed a four-game sweep.

The Nationals came to life after Martinez's ejection in the eighth. Juan Soto walked against Robert Gsellman (1-0), Victor Robles singled, and Yan Gomes brought in Soto with a double. Gerardo Parra followed with a pinch-hit, two-run single for a 4-3 Washington lead.

The Nationals have lost five straight and six of seven.

Edwin Diaz picked up his 12th save. Mets starter Steven Matz allowed 10 hits over six innings of one-run ball.

Washington starter Stephen Strasburg allowed two runs and five hits over seven innings.

PIRATES 14, ROCKIES 6

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Josh Bell, Bryan Reynolds and Starling Marte homered in the seventh inning to lead Pittsburgh past Colorado.

The Pirates jumped on Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela (3-4) for eight runs over 3 1/3 innings, but Colorado stormed back in the sixth, plating six runs that were charged to Pittsburgh starter Jordan Lyles (5-1).

Pittsburgh quickly fought back with three homers. Gregory Polanco homered in the first for Pittsburgh.

The Pirates had scored just two runs while dropping their first two games of the series before setting a new season high with 14 on Thursday.

MARLINS 5, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Garrett Cooper hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning and Miami extended its winning streak to six gameS with the win over Detroit.

The Marlins, who had the worst record in the majors last week, extended the longest active winning streak in the big leagues.

The Tigers wrapped up an 0-9 stay at Comerica Park against Houston, Oakland and the Marlins. That record doesn't include a suspended game in which Detroit trails Oakland in the late innings.

Miami benefited from a couple of fielding lapses by the Tigers in the ninth to come back against Shane Greene (0-2), who had been 15 for 15 on save chances this season.

Marlins starter Trevor Richards struck out six over 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and one run.

Tyler Kinley (1-0) gave up one run in the eighth and got the win. Sergio Romo earned his ninth save with a perfect ninth.

PHILLIES 9, CUBS 7

CHICAGO (AP) - Jean Segura and J.T. Realmuto homered off Jon Lester, and Philadelphia beat Chicago for a split of the four-game series between division leaders.

Andrew McCutchen added two hits and two RBIs as Philadelphia won for the fifth time in seven games. Aaron Nola (5-0) pitched 5 1/3 innings of three-run ball in his second straight victory.

Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber hit homers for Chicago, which had won three of four. Rizzo finished with four hits and three RBIs, but the NL Central-leading Cubs were unable to overcome a second consecutive shaky performance by Lester (3-3).

Lester was charged with four earned runs and seven hits in his second straight loss. He had an 8-0 record and a 1.49 ERA in 10 career starts against the Phillies before Thursday.

Segura also doubled in the third to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

BRAVES 5, GIANTS 4, 13 INNINGS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Austin Riley hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning and then drove in the go-ahead run in the 13th with a two-out single off Reyes Moronta, lifting Atlanta past San Francisco.

Riley and Ozzie Albies each had three hits for Atlanta and Tyler Flowers homered. The Braves have won 10 of 13.

Luke Jackson (3-1), who blew his fourth save on Tuesday, retired six batters to win.

Tyler Austin hit his first career pinch-hit home run, and Brandon Belt scored on a wild pitch for San Francisco.

Riley already had one hit before his two-run homer off Tony Watson with two outs in the eighth. It was the 22-year-old's third home run of the series and fifth overall.

Atlanta's win overshadowed a strong outing by Giants starter Madison Bumgarner, who allowed two runs on six hits, walked two and left with a 4-2 lead.

Braves starter Kevin Gausman allowed three runs in six innings.

RED SOX 8, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Ryan Weber pitched six innings to earn his first career win as a starter, Steve Pearce homered and had three RBIs and Boston beat Toronto.

Pearce went 3 for 5. He singled in the fourth and sixth innings and hit a two-run shot off Ryan Feierabend in the ninth, his first of the season.

Rafael Devers had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice as Boston improved to 11-3 in its past 14 road games.

The struggling Blue Jays lost for the third time in four games.

Weber (1-0) allowed one run on three hits, walked none and struck out four.

Toronto's Sam Gaviglio (3-1) allowed four hits, two earned runs and struck out one in the loss. Justin Smoak hit a solo homer in the ninth.
