    • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Over/under totals on number of TD passes thrown this season:

      33.5— Aaron Rodgers

      32.5— Tom Brady

      28— Ben Roethlisberger

      27— Jared Goff

      26.5— Brees, Rivers, Stafford, Watson

      25.5— Cousins, Prescott, Wilson

      **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Things I learned while watching way too much TV

      13) Texas Tech’s marching band was the first marching band to to travel to its school’s road football games, way back in 1925.

      12) Actor Dennis Quaid is left-handed; he was a quarterback in Any Given Sunday, a relief pitcher in The Rookie.

      11) Since he became the starter ten years ago, Green Bay is 94-48 when Aaron Rodgers starts for them; they’re 6-11-1 in games he’s missed.

      10) Pittsburgh’s Joe Musgrove began Thursday’s game with 21 consecutive strikes, the most by any starting pitcher to begin a game since pitches were first tracked in 1988.

      9) There are 48 college football games this season where the visiting team is getting a guarantee of at least $1M. At the highest level, college sports is very big business.

      8) There is a movie called Owning Mahowny that is about a bank manager with:
      (a) a gambling problem and
      (b) access to a multimillion dollar bank account;

The movie is based on the true story of the largest one-man bank fraud in Canadian history. It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Minnie Driver.

      7) Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich is the first player with a cycle, a 5th hit and an outfield assist all in the same game since Andre Dawson on April 29, 1987. Yelich had his big night Wednesday in Cincinnati.

      6) Baltimore Ravens have won their last 14 preseason games; they’re also 21-27 in the regular season the last three years, haven’t made the playoffs since 2014.

      5) Now I feel old: Trent Green’s son is the backup QB at Northwestern.

      4) Something is amiss with the Red Sox’ front office; David Howard, who has been Boston’s minor league field coordinator for nine years, has been fired- no word on why. Odd timing.

      3) The other night in Fenway Park, Red Sox scored 11 runs in an inning; Andrew Benitendi made the first out of the inning with a sacrifice bunt, then ended the inning by grounding into a double play. Research Doug Kern looked this up, and says that has never happened before in the big leagues.

      2) Friday night’s Detroit-New York baseball game was first one this year where both managers were ejected. Ejections have to be way down since instant replay became a thing.

      1) There are 24 grad transfer QB’s in college football this season, which means a kid got his degree at one school, wasn’t happy with his playing situation and went elsewhere to finish his college career.

MLB Game Preview - Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers don’t have much to play for in 2018, but they are getting an uptick in production from some young batters lately, which they hope to carry over to next season. The pitching staff is an issue but the Rangers’ young bats are hitting the ball well of late. They will aim to keep it going in a matchup against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.

The Angels have been the better team this season but are dealing with injuries to big names like Justin Upton and Albert Pujols. Mike Trout still leads the way in the lineup but it is fair to wonder if there is enough thunder around him.

Neither of these teams are in the playoff race so this contest will be more about the future in MLB wagering.

The Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers will face off on Tuesday, September 4th, 2018 at 8:05 p.m. ET at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

                  Odds Analysis

The Angels are 66-71 on the season despite having a positive run-differential. There is talent scattered across the roster but it has not resulted in a competitive season, as the Astros, Athletics and Mariners have been comfortably ahead of the Angels in the standings for most of the season. Los Angeles boasts the best player in the major leagues in Trout but has deficiencies in other areas.

The Rangers are 60-77 on the season. They have given up 726 runs this season, which is the second-worst in the major leagues behind the Orioles. Texas has not been very good at home on the year but is hoping to capture this one to send the fans home happy in MLB wagering.

                  Probable Pitchers

Los Angeles is projected to send left-hander Andrew Heaney to the mound. He is 8-8 on the season with a 4.09 ERA. Heaney was fantastic last time out, twirling six shutout innings in a win over the Astros. Heaney is striking out nearly a batter per inning and but has also run into stretches where he gives up the long ball quite a bit. He hopes to keep the Rangers at bay in this one.

Texas will counter with left-hander Mike Minor. He is 10-7 with a 4.33 ERA. Minor has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his past six starts, which includes allowing only one hit in six shutout innings two starts ago versus the Athletics. Minor has lowered his ERA by more than half a run of late and will aim to keep up the impressive work.

                  Key Stat

Six. That’s the number of home runs the Rangers hit on Sunday in a blowout win over the Twins. Nomar Mazara led the way with a pair of dingers, while Elvis Andrus, Robinson Chirinos, Jurickson Profar and Drew Robinson also connected on round-trippers.

The Rangers hadn’t clubbed six home runs in a game since doing so against the Red Sox back in 2012. Mazara and Profar are two of the team’s young hitters who seem to be putting it together this season. Joey Gallo has been up and down but has tremendous upside, while Rougned Odor is another player who has found some momentum late in the year.

The Rangers’ bats hope to remain hot in this one.

                  Free MLB ATS Picks

While Minor is on a nice streak, Heaney is the better pitcher. Texas’ bats will get cooled off a bit in this one while the Angels should put together a nice offensive showing. Take Los Angeles to come away with this road victory in MLB wagering. Keep an eye on the run total as the “over” could be the correct call.

MLB ATS Pick: Angels 6, Rangers 4

St. Louis Cardinals vs Washington Nationals

Washington management gave their 2018 roster all the way until late August to figure out if they were going to be contenders or not, and when the answer was clear, the fire sale continued in earnest. The Nationals have to be lamenting what's gone on through these Bryce Harper years in the nation's capital, but hopefully for Nats fans that era won't be over after 2018.

The entire organization has shifted it's focus to accumulating assets (in the case Harper does leave) while simultaneously leaving no stone unturned for their upcoming free agent pitch to Harper, and that means it's pure spoiler role for them on the field the reSt. of the way. Will that be the case tonight?

Odds: St. Louis (-106) vs Washington (-104); Total set at 9

While the talk of how little the organization accomplished during this era with Harper entering his prime and multiple “shots” taken at it with free agent/trade deadline acquisitions will have to wait until another day, it can be quite entertaining to watch just how far and how fast these teams fall once the fall starts. 2018 was the beginning of the fall for this Washington core and we now enter a state of limbo with them for the next few months as Bryce Harper makes his decision.

If he decides to leave, expect Washington to unload other valuable assets (Scherzer, etc.) over the winter and commit to a brief rebuild (Washington still already has plenty of other great youthful talent). If Harper decides to stay, well then it becomes a matter of how aggressive and even if Washington wants to go the free agent route again but that's really not brought anything but a few playoff appearances in the past.

All of that is the backdrop for a team that is clearly going through the motions on the field because there is so much uncertainty with the organization going forward. In turn, that makes the Nationals a bit of a tougher team to handicap, simply because you can't consistently rely on the effort you may or may not get.

But teams in spoiler roles like the Nats, do tend to get up when they've got a legit shot at spoiling someone's season – facing a division leader/Wild Card contender, and it looks as though some already believe that's the Washington side we will see tonight.

This line has seen Washington cross over the plus-minus barrier after opening up in the +105 to +110 range. Getting an underdog to essentially “flip flop” over to becoming a favorite (Washington nearly a favorite now) is a move that can't be ignored, especially when betting percentages over at VegasInsider.com show an overwhelming majority (85%+) on the visitors from St. Louis.

And hey, I get it. Fading this Nationals team the rest of September is probably going to be a good strategy given all the question marks surrounding the organization I outlined above, but it may be something I'd want to hold off on tonight.

For one, the Cardinals lost Game 1 of this series in crushing fashion yesterday, blowing a 3-1 lead in the 9th and then finally losing in the 10th inning. When every win is desperately needed by the Cardinals who are trying to hold on to whatever skin they've got left in the NL Wild Card race (currently own that final spot, one game ahead of LA) or in the NL Central race (5.5 games behind Chicago) for that matter, losses like that carry that little extra sting.

The Cardinals can't afford to be giving up any games in that fashion the rest of the way and I would not be surprised to see them need another day or two to recover from that loss. Seeing the way the line move has gone this morning only furthers that point as well.

So while I'm not entirely thrilled to back the home side tonight, it's really the only way to look. Washington's still got plenty of talent in their lineup to be a very good “spoiler” down the stretch, and it never hurts to ride a bit of momentum for a few days like from what they got with last night's comeback win.

It makes not winning a single playoff series all these years that much more baffling about what could have been in Washington, but tonight I believe we see the good side of the Nats as they tighten the screws on the Cardinals playoff chances that much more.

                    Best Bet: Washington (-104)

                        September 5, 2018
                        By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) Steve Pearce had three hits and three RBIs, Rick Porcello allowed two hits in five innings and the Boston Red Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 5-1 on Tuesday night for their second straight win in a matchup of division leaders.

Porcello (16-7) gave up one run and struck out five, improving to 10-3 on the road this year. He had been 0-2 in his previous three starts overall since an Aug. 14 win at Philadelphia.

Atlanta pitchers walked nine, including five by starter Sean Newcomb (11-8), who matched his season high. He allowed three runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The Braves' lead over second-place Philadelphia in the NL East was cut to three games.

Kurt Suzuki homered for the Braves.

                        BREWERS 11, CUBS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Lorenzo Cain reached base five times, Wade Miley pitched six stingy innings and Milwaukee romped past Chicago to climb within three games of the NL Central leaders.

Miley (3-2) allowed one run and three hits, struck out five and walked none as Milwaukee won for the fifth time in its last six meetings with its division rival. The second-place Brewers maintained a 1+-game lead over St. Louis for the top NL wild card.

Mike Montgomery (4-5) struggled with his control for four innings, and the Brewers had little trouble with a succession of Cubs relievers.

Cain had four walks and a double from the leadoff spot. Christian Yelich walked and added a two-run double in the seventh.

The first-place Cubs committed two errors. First baseman Anthony Rizzo left the game with a bruised right foot.

                        CARDINALS 11, NATIONALS 8

WASHINGTON (AP) - Yadier Molina hit a grand slam, Marcell Ozuna homered twice and St. Louis defeated Washington.

Molina provided a cushion for the Cardinals with his sixth career slam, which made it 11-5 in the ninth inning. St. Louis hit five homers overall in stopping a three-game skid.

Right fielder Yairo Munoz robbed Ryan Zimmerman of a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, reaching over the fence and pulling the ball back into the field of play for a two-run double.

Tyson Ross (8-9) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win and Jordan Hicks got the final out for his sixth save.

Ozuna and Paul DeJong homered back-to-back to start the sixth, breaking a 4-all tie. One out later, Patrick Wisdom went deep to make it 7-4.

Making his second major league appearance, reliever Austen Williams (0-1) gave up all three homers. He allowed none in 68 innings this season in Double-A and Triple-A.

The 4-hour, 10-minute game included 16 walks and 20 strikeouts.

                        ROCKIES 6, GIANTS 2

DENVER (AP) - Ryan McMahon had a pinch-hit home run and Carlos Gonzalez tripled with the bases loaded during a five-run seventh inning that carried Colorado past San Francisco.

David Dahl also homered and Charlie Blackmon had three hits for the Rockies, who lead the NL West in September or October for the first time since 1995. It was the fourth straight loss for the Giants, who also have dropped six in a row to Colorado.

Rockies starter German Marquez struck out 11 over 6 2/3 innings. Gorkys Hernandez snapped a 1-all tie with a home run in the seventh for the Giants.

Chris Rusin (2-2) got the win. Reyes Moronta (5-2) took the loss.

                        PHILLIES 9, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - Carlos Santana homered to start a four-run first inning and Philadelphia snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Miami.

Jake Arrieta (10-9) struck out a season-high 11 and earned his first win since July 31. He allowed four runs in 7 1/3 innings and improved to 5-1 in eight career starts against the Marlins.

The Phillies moved within three games of first-place Atlanta in the NL East. They have a chance to win a series for the first time in a month Wednesday.

J.T. Realmuto hit two solo homers off Arrieta, increasing his season total to 20.

Asdrubal Cabrera drove in three runs with his 23rd homer and a double for the Phillies. Santana knocked in two runs and scored twice, and Cesar Hernandez hit a bases-loaded triple. The Phillies had totaled five runs in their previous four games.

Marlins starter Trevor Richards (3-8) lasted only 1 1/3 innings in his shortest outing yet. The rookie remained winless since July 14.

                        PIRATES 7, REDS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Starling Marte hit a two-run homer, Gregory Polanco had a two-run double and Pittsburgh topped Cincinnati.

Joe Musgrove (6-8) took a shutout into the seventh inning for the Pirates, who improved to 12-4 against the Reds this season.

Scooter Gennett homered twice for Cincinnati. Cody Reed (0-2) permitted six runs and nine hits in a season-high five innings.

The top four batters in Pittsburgh's lineup went a combined 8 for 17 and drove in five runs.

                        ASTROS 5, TWINS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Alex Bregman hit three doubles and Yuli Gurriel homered for the second game in a row, leading Justin Verlander and Houston to its fourth straight win.

Verlander (14-9) yielded one run and three hits while fanning eight over seven innings. Roberto Osuna got his 13th save.

Gurriel's homer capped a four-run first off Trevor May (3-1).

Minnesota designated hitter Miguel Sano was carted off the field in the second after injuring his surgically repaired left leg sliding into second base. He was listed as day-to-day.

                        TIGERS 8, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - A fan was hit in the face by a foul ball and bled profusely before walking to the first aid station, causing a brief delay during Detroit's win.

The middle-aged male fan was sitting in the first row on the first base side of Guaranteed Rate Field - well beyond where the netting extends to end of the dugout - when he was struck by Jeimer Candelario's foul leading off the Tigers ninth. The game was held up for a couple minutes while he was treated, and the man eventually walked away under his own power, escorted by stadium personnel.

Francisco Liriano (4-9) had been 0-8 since late April. Lucas Giolito (10-10) gave up four earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.

                        INDIANS 9, ROYALS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Mike Clevinger struck out 10, Francisco Lindor hit another leadoff homer and Cleveland ended a three-game losing streak.

Clevinger (11-7) allowed just three hits in six innings and remained unbeaten in his last seven starts.

Kansas City had its season-high winning streak stopped at six, and lost starting pitcher Danny Duffy and rookie right fielder Brett Phillips to injuries.

Following the game, Duffy said his season is over. He's been sidelined this year with shoulder issues. Phillips bruised his right shoulder crashed into the wall chasing a flyball.

                        RANGERS 4, ANGELS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus each hit solo home runs in the fourth inning to lead Texas.

Andrus hit the first pitch of the fourth against Andrew Heaney (8-9) to tie it at 1. Two batters later, Beltre went deep for the ninth time this season and 471st time in his career.

Shohei Ohtani hit his 16th homer for Los Angeles, a leadoff shot in the sixth that chased Texas starter Mike Minor (11-7). It was Ohtani's first major league homer off a left-handed pitcher.

Jose Leclerc struck out two in a perfect ninth for his ninth save.

                        RAYS 4, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Ryne Stanek became the first rookie pitcher in 75 years to start consecutive games and combined with six relievers on a three-hitter as Tampa Bay won its fourth in a row.

A night after throwing one inning and 16 pitches, Stanek worked one inning. He became first rookie to start back-to-back games since the St. Louis Cardinals' Red Munger got one out in a loss to Philadelphia on July 28, 1943, then pitched a complete-game victory over the Phillies the following day, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Hunter Wood (1-1) pitched two hitless innings and Sergio Romo got his 19th save. Rookie Ryan Borucki (3-4) took the loss.

                        DIAMONDBACKS 6, PADRES 0

PHOENIX (AP) - Robbie Ray struck out 10 and pitched two-hit ball for 6 1/3 innings as Arizona blanked San Diego to end a four-game losing streak.

The Diamondbacks' skid had knocked them out of first place in the NL West.

Ray (5-2) got his first win at Chase Field since March 30, his first game of 2018 - he'd been 0-1 in his previous six starts at home. He won back-to-back starts for the first time since last September.

Joey Lucchesi (7-8) gave up two runs and three hits in five innings. He's winless in five career starts against Arizona.

Nick Ahmed hit an RBI triple and scored on Ketel Marte's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead in the second.

                          • LEADING OFF: Mariners brawl in clubhouse, Rizzo hurts foot
                            September 4, 2018
                            By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

                            LET'S BE FRIENDS

Still in contention for a postseason spot, the Seattle Mariners apparently have some internal issues that need sorting out. A brawl involving several Mariners players broke out in their clubhouse Tuesday several hours before a game against Baltimore at Safeco Field. Shortstop Jean Segura, catcher Mike Zunino and other players were involved in the skirmish. Moments after center fielder Dee Gordon politely asked reporters to leave the locker room, the double doors burst open with players shoving and shouting. ''Our guys are working through it and talking through it,'' Mariners manager Scott Servais said. ''It happens a lot more than you know. Almost every year you see it. Sometimes it brings teams together. ... Things reach a boiling point and you have to get it off your chest.''

                            FOOT BALL

The Cubs hope for good news on first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who left Tuesday night's game against Milwaukee with a bruised right foot.

The injury occurred when Rizzo fouled a ball off his foot in the third inning. He was replaced in the sixth, and the team said X-rays were negative.

Rizzo entered the game hitting .284 with 24 home runs and 90 RBIs. Jose Quintana (11-9) pitches for the NL Central leaders against Jhoulys Chacin (14-5) and the second-place Brewers in their series finale at Miller Park.

                            HOLE IN THE LINEUP

Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig is set to finish serving his two-game suspension when Los Angeles hosts the New York Mets. Puig lost his appeal and began sitting out Tuesday night. He was involved in an altercation with San Francisco's Nick Hundley during an Aug. 14 game, taking an open-handed swipe at the catcher's mask. Puig is eligible to return for Friday's series opener at Colorado. The Dodgers also were awaiting word from team doctors on whether closer Kenley Jansen will return for the weekend series. After Jansen was at altitude in Denver last month, he went on the disabled list due to an irregular heartbeat that was shocked back into rhythm. Jansen has experienced two separate atrial fibrillation episodes while in Denver with the Dodgers, who are locked in a tight race with the Rockies and Diamondbacks for the NL West title.

                            BAD TIMING

With the Phillies trying to stay close in the playoff chase, third baseman Maikel Franco has reported worsening soreness in his right wrist. He planned to return to Philadelphia for evaluation by a specialist. Earlier X-rays were negative, but Franco missed his second game in a row Tuesday night in Miami, and he was expected to undergo an MRI. He's batting .267 with 22 homers and 66 RBIs.

                            BART'S BACK

Bartolo Colon is expected to pitch for Texas in his first game since going on the disabled list. The 45-year-old Colon was hit hard by Oakland on Aug. 20 in his last outing, then was sidelined by back stiffness. Colon (7-11, 5.45 ERA) is set to start at home against the Angels. He has 247 career wins.

                              Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

                              13) Jacob deGrom set a major league record Monday night; his 9th start this season where he gave up one or no runs, but didn’t get the win; he had previously shared the record with former Giants’ manager Roger Craig, who did it in 1963.

                              12) This will be Le’Veon Bell’s 6th year in the NFL; it’ll be the 4th time in six years he didn’t play in Week 1— two via suspensions, one via injury and now one via holdout.

                              11) Michigan started out 19-3 in Jim Harbaugh’s first 22 games as Wolverines’ coach, but they’re 9-9 in their last 18 games.

                              10) Saturday night, kid on Notre Dame fair-caught a kickoff on his own 8-yard line with 2:18 left and Notre Dame leading 24-17; lot of people in the crowd groaned, not knowing the new rule, where the fair catch automatically puts the ball on the 25. Fair catch is a smart play.

                              9) One of my favorite new words: “salty” as in: “Saban was salty when asked about his QB situation” Good descriptive word.

                              8) Jaguars’ RB Leonard Fournette might be getting a call from the NFL offices this week; after LSU hammered Miami Sunday night, LSU alum Fournette posted a pic on Twitter of the letter “U”, formed with a lot of $100 bills in piles, maybe $5,000 or so, taunting the Hurricanes.

I’m sure the league was just thrilled to see that; Fournette didn’t say if he won the cash from teammates or from a casino or from whomever.

                              7) Jose Ureña, in his three starts since he got tossed for drilling Ronald Acuña on the first pitch of a game: 2-0, 2.45 in 22 IP- the no-decision was in Fenway Park.

                              6) Being a manager in today’s world: Wil Myers met with manager San Diego skipper Andy Green Monday morning to apologize for a video that surfaced in which, during a live-streamed game of Fortnite, he criticized Green for holding extra defensive drills last week.

Myers has been moved to third base and made three errors in a game last week- he could use the practice.

                              5) The other night in Philadelphia, a Phillies’ relief pitcher took an index card out of his pocket while on the mound— it had scouting info on it, like a cheat sheet. Umpire Joe West immediately went over and took the card away from the pitcher.

Turns out Joe West was wrong; it is OK for a pitcher to have notes with him on the mound.

                              4) Right now, Alex Tanney is a 30-year old backup QB for the Giants; he played college ball at Monmouth in Illinois (not New Jersey)- the Giants are his 9th NFL team in seven years. During that time, he played in only one regular season game, for the 2015 Titans; he was 10-14 passing for 99 yards in a 30-24 loss in Indianapolis.

                              3) Las Vegas puts out spreads on I-AA college football games now; last week, Butler was a 37-point underdog at Youngstown State, and the Bulldogs pulled off a 23-21 upset. In the history of the betting world, very few 37-point underdogs have ever won (Stanford at USC when Jim Harbaugh was at Stanford was a 40-point dog, I think).

                              2) Ryan Podell is the Indianapolis Colts’ new sports science/conditioning coach; the last three years, he worked for the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers. NFL Films should do a feature on him, to see what, if any, new ideas he is bringing to Indy from the NBA.

                              1) There are people burning Nike stuff because Nike is paying Colin Kaepernick to be one of their spokesmen; I don’t care what you think of Kaepernick, but please don’t waste stuff— there are plenty of kids/homeless people who could use gear. Give it away to a homeless shelter or to Goodwill, put it to good use. Be a good person; don’t waste things.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
