LOS ANGELES (AP) Matt Kemp beat the Diamondbacks for the second straight game, hitting a two-run double in the ninth inning that lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers over Arizona 3-2 Sunday for sole possession of first place in the NL West.

A day after Kemp launched a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth against Archie Bradley, the Dodgers' slugger tagged him again.

Kemp's one-out drive off the wall in left-center field put Los Angeles alone atop the West for the first time since Aug. 7. The Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks by identical 3-2 scores three days in a row, after Arizona won the series opener at Dodger Stadium.

Brad Boxberger (2-5) started the ninth and put the potential tying and go-ahead runs on with consecutive walks to pinch-hitter Alex Verdugo and Max Muncy. The runners advanced on Enrique Hernandez's sacrifice bunt and set up Kemp.

Daniel Descalso homered leading off the ninth against Caleb Ferguson to put Arizona ahead 2-1.

Kenley Jansen (1-5) got the last three outs.

          ASTROS 4, ANGELS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - George Springer hit a two-run homer and finished a triple shy of the cycle to lead Houston past Los Angeles in Shohei Ohtani's return to the mound for the Angels.

Ohtani (4-2) lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his first time pitching since June 6 because of an elbow strain. Both of the hits he allowed were to Springer - a leadoff single and his two-run shot in the third that made it 2-0.

Alex Bregman finished with two hits and his solo homer in the seventh inning pushed the lead to 4-2.

Ohtani joined Babe Ruth as the only players in major league history to start 10 games as a pitcher and hit 10 homers in a single season. The rookie, who has 15 homers, missed almost a month after he was injured before returning as the team's designated hitter on July 3.

Houston starter Gerrit Cole (13-5) allowed six hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings for his third straight win after losing three in a row. He struck out nine to move past teammate Justin Verlander (240) and into first place in the American League with 243 strikeouts. Roberto Osuna pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save.

          BRAVES 5, PIRATES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. hit his seventh leadoff homer of the season and scored the tiebreaking run in a four-run eighth inning to help NL East-leading Atlanta beat Pittsburgh.

The 20-year-old Acuna singled off Steven Brault (5-3) to begin the eighth, advanced on a bunt and scored from second on a headfirst slide after second baseman Kevin Newman errantly let Freddie Freeman's hard grounder bounce between his legs and roll into shallow right field.

Acuna's first-inning shot was his 23rd overall and tied the franchise record for leadoff homers that Marquis Grissom set in 1996.

The Braves increased their division lead over Philadelphia to four games.

Jonny Venters (4-1) got the last out of the Pirates' eighth to earn a win in relief for the second straight game.

          RAYS 6, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Brandon Lowe homered and drove in three runs to lead Tampa Bay.

Ryan Yarbrough, another rookie, allowed one run in five-plus innings of relief for opener Diego Castillo, who was removed after Yandy Diaz's leadoff single in the second.

Yarbrough (13-5), who earned his major league-leading 11th relief win, was pulled after Jose Ramirez's RBI single in the seventh. Adam Kolarek pitched two scoreless innings before Cleveland made it closer in the ninth.

The Rays have won 11 of 13 and are a season-high 10 games over .500 (73-63). Tampa Bay trails Oakland by eight games for the second wild card spot in the AL.

Francisco Lindor singled off Hunter Wood to lead off the ninth. Jose Ramirez drew a one-out walk and Diaz had an RBI single. Jose Alvarado replaced Wood and struck out Yonder Alonso, but Melky Cabrera's two-run double cut the lead to two.

Alvarado struck out Jason Kipnis for his seventh save in 10 opportunities.

Carlos Carrasco (16-7) allowed five runs in 6 1/3 innings and lost for the third time in his last 11 decisions.

          REDS 6, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Eugenio Suarez's two-run homer off of Bud Norris in the 10th inning lifted Cincinnati past St. Louis.

After Suarez's 31st of the season, Brandon Dixon hit a solo homer four pitches later as the Reds hit back-to-back homers for the fifth time this season, the sixth and seventh home runs given up by Norris (3-4).

They came right after Michael Lorenzen (2-1) pitched out a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the ninth without giving up a run to send the game to extra innings. Raisel Iglesias earned his 25th save in 29 chances despite allowing a run for the fourth time in his last five outings.

The Reds won for just the third time in their last 11 games, including the last two against the Cardinals, snapping their series winning streak at 10. St. Louis (76-61) fell a half game behind the Milwaukee Brewers into the second wild card spot in the National League.

          ATHLETICS 8, MARINERS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Stephen Piscotty homered twice and drove in five runs as Oakland widened its lead over Seattle for the second AL wild-card spot.

The A's moved 5 1/2 games ahead of Seattle for the final AL wild-card slot.

Edwin Jackson (5-3) allowed one run and three hits in six innings. He improved to 5-0 with a 1.30 ERA in five career starts against the Mariners.

Athletics reliever Fernando Rodney surrendered Ryon Healy's two-out RBI single in the eighth. Blake Treinen recorded four outs for his 35th save.

Seattle starter Felix Hernandez (8-13) is 0-7 over nine outings since beating the Royals on June 30.

          ROCKIES 7, PADRES 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chris Iannetta hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh inning and Colorado salvaged a split of the four-game series to stay within a half-game of the NL West lead.

The Rockies came into the series one-half game behind Arizona before losing the first two games. They snapped San Diego's four-game winning streak on Saturday night and then beat rookie Jacob Nix (2-3) on Sunday.

Arizona and the Los Angeles Dodgers were tied for the division lead going into Sunday's finale of their four-game series at Dodger Stadium.

Colorado, which lost to Arizona in the NL wild-card game last year, won for the third time in seven games.

Kyle Freeland (13-7) got the win, allowing three runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.

          METS 4, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Noah Syndergaard pitched a two-hitter for his first career complete game, striking out 11 as New York beat San Francisco.

Syndergaard (10-3) made his 81st start in the majors and topped the Giants for the second time in 12 days. He matched his season high for strikeouts, walked one and retired 20 of the final 22 batters.

Syndergaard continued a strong stretch by New York's rotation. Over the past 15 games, Mets starters have a 1.61 ERA.

Michael Conforto hit his 20th home run, Jeff McNeil had two hits and two RBIs and Todd Frazier added a pair of hits. The Mets won for the seventh time in their last eight games at AT&T Park.

The Giants have lost three of four.

Limited to a total of two runs in the first two games of the series, the Mets matched that in the second. Frazier led off with a single and Conforto homered off Chris Stratton (9-8).

          RANGERS 18, TWINS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Yohander Mendez earned his first major league win and Nomar Mazara hit two of Texas' six homers.

Mendez (1-1) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out two in six scoreless innings. He was making his second major league start in a season when he was a combined 2-10 with the Rangers' top three farm teams.

Mazara hit a two-run homer in a nine-run sixth inning and a solo homer in a five-run eighth as the Rangers pounded 12 extra-base hits, tying a team record set in 1986.

Twenty-three-year-old Gabriel Moya, 11 days older than Venezuelan countryman Mendez, made his first major league start after compiling a 3-0 record in 24 relief outings.

Moya gave up a two-run homer to Elvis Andrus in the first. Zack Littell took over in the second and pitched into the sixth, when Robinson Chirinos homered to key the big inning.

WHITE SOX 8, RED SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - James Shields threw six scoreless innings, Tim Anderson and Daniel Palka homered and Chicago beat major league-leading Boston.

Anderson had three hits - including two doubles - for the White Sox, who have won seven of their last 10 games.

Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez had two hits apiece for Boston, which had won four of its last five.

The Red Sox have the majors' best record at 94-44 and maintained a 7 1/2 -game lead in the AL East over the New York Yankees, who lost to Detroit.

Shields (6-15) struck out six and allowed four hits and two walks.

Brian Johnson (4-4) allowed four runs and seven hits while recording four outs in his shortest start of the season.

          CUBS 8, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Javier Baez hit one of three solo home runs off Cy Young candidate Aaron Nola to reach 30 home runs and 100 RBIs, and Jon Lester pitched six shutout innings to continue his mastery of the Phillies and help lead NL Central-leading Chicago.

Daniel Murphy and Anthony Rizzo also went deep off Nola (15-4), who gave up three home runs in a game for just the second time over 88 starts in his four-year career.

Lester (15-5) surrendered eight hits, struck out seven and walked none while improving to 8-0 with a 1.49 ERA in 10 career regular-season starts against the Phillies.

Chicago, which has won 10 of 12, began play leading the Cardinals by 4 1/2 games.

The Phillies fell 3 1/2 games back of Atlanta, which hosted Pittsburgh Sunday night.

          TIGERS 11, YANKEES 7

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Victor Reyes hit his first major league home run, doubled twice and singled, leading Detroit over New York.

The Tigers split the four-game series. The Yankees began the day 7 1/2 games behind Boston in the AL East and finished 3-4 on their homestand against Detroit and the Chicago White Sox, both far below-.500 teams.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone was absent while serving a one-game suspension for nicking plate umpire Nic Lentz with his cap during an animated argument Friday night. Bench coach Josh Bard filled in for Boone.

Reyes drove in three runs with his career-high four hits.

Yankees starter Lance Lynn (9-9) allowed six runs and nine hits with one walk while striking out six over 3 2/3 innings.

Matthew Boyd (9-12) gave up three runs and five hits with one walk while striking out six over six innings.

          ROYALS 9, ORIOLES 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jorge Lopez showed some of the potential the Royals saw when they traded for him in late July, scattering five hits over a career-best seven innings and helping Kansas City rout Baltimore.

The Royals completed a three-game sweep of the only team in the majors with a worse record than theirs.

The only run Lopez (1-4) allowed came in the first, when Jonathan Villar sent a mistake over the left-field wall. Lopez bounced back to strike out a career-high eight without a walk to earn his second win and first since Sept. 29, 2015, when he was still with the Brewers.

Orioles starter David Hess (3-9) allowed five runs and nine hits, and was victimized by a trio of Baltimore errors - all of which came after his own mistakes during a dreadful third inning.

          BREWERS 9, NATIONALS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Christian Yelich hit his first career grand slam, Keon Broxton added a three-run homer, and Milwaukee beat Washington.

Both Broxton and Yelich homered as part of a seven-run fifth inning. It matched Milwaukee's highest-scoring inning of the season.

Washington starter Jefry Rodriguez (2-2) struggled with his control throughout his outing, walking seven while allowing seven runs in 4 2/3 innings. But he wasn't hit hard until the fifth. Manager Dave Martinez pulled Rodriguez after another single and a walk, but reliever Tim Collins fared no better.

Reliever Brandon Woodruff (3-0) pitched four scoreless innings to earn the victory.

          BLUE JAYS 6, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Sean Reid-Foley struck out 10 over seven innings and earned his first major league win to lead Toronto.

Teoscar Hernandez hit a three-run homer and Luke Maile had three doubles for the Blue Jays.

Reid-Foley (1-2) allowed one run and four hits with one walk in his third major league start. The 23-year-old righty struck out the side in the first inning and worked himself out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth with just one run scoring.

Thomas Pannone pitched the final two innings for Toronto.

Miami starter Jeff Brigham (0-1) made his major league debut, pitching three innings and giving up three runs on four hits and four walks.

              *********************

              Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

              13) NFL happenings:
              — Giants waived backup QB Davis Webb, claimed an NFL-high six players off waivers, three of whom are defensive backs. Webb was a 3rd-round draft pick LY.
              — Denver Broncos dumped QB Paxton Lynch, their first round pick two years ago. Broncos also cut four of their eight draft picks from 2017.

              12) Football writer Gary Myers posted Sunday that new Giants coach Pat Shurmur was steamed that Webb never got to play in an NFL game LY, so he could see him play on tape, in real action.

Shurmur can thank his current starting QB for that development.

Of the 53 players on the Giants’ roster, 27 of them weren’t Giants LY, 26 of them were.

              11) Saturday was the first college football Saturday with legalized wagering in Mississippi, and the GoldStrong MGM hotel in Tunica was sold out- the lines in the sportsbook were out into the lobby. They only have 4 or 5 windows for betting.

              10) PGA Tour was in Boston last week; golfer Patrick Reed got some free tickets to the Red Sox game at Fenway, then had the onions to complain about them, saying the tickets were “..…in the line drive section” He’s not the most likable guy.

              9) Astros have surprisingly lost Justin Verlander’s last five home starts.

              8) Thru his first 177 major league at-bats, Padres rookie Franmil Reyes had 13 homers, but only 19 RBI. That is hard to do.

He is hitting .298 with the bases empty, .161 (9 for 56) with men on base.

              7) Now that Aaron Donald has a contract with $87M in guarantees, he’s going to get his mother to quit her job driving a bus, which she’s done for the last 20 years.

              6) Peter Alonso has 35 homers, 117 RBI in the minor leagues this season, splitting time between AA and AAA- he hit .314 in the Eastern League, is hitting .261 in the PCL.

Why won’t the Mets bring him up? Shouldn’t they promote productive players?

              5) Good luck to Sam the Bugler, who is retiring after 25 years of calling horses onto the track at New York racetracks. Sam Grossman is the guy’s real name; he actually has a bobblehead that the NYRA gave out to fans a few years ago.

              4) Dodger bullpen hasn’t helped Clayton Kershaw much this season; they’re 11-10 in his starts this year, but they’re 13-6-2 in the first five innings of those starts.

              3) New England Patriots obviously dominate the AFC East; they’ve won that lame division 17 years in a row, but Patriots have lost four of their last five visits to Miami.

              2) If your kid is in college and wants to be a sports broadcaster, tell him to study hard- there is a young man at Syracuse doing SU football games— Ian Eagle’s son, and he’s going to get a job before your kid does. Very difficult to become a professional announcer— lot of times you need serious connections, just to get your foot in the door.

If you’re lucky enough to get your foot in the door, you best be really good, to keep your job.

              1) Apparently Aretha Franklin didn’t have a will, so the wrangling over her estate is going to be drawn out; she was worth millions, and has four sons. As usual, there will be lawyers.

                          Snakes Alive

The Arizona Diamondbacks are on a killer 'under' 9-0 run, and each of their past three games against the Dodgers ended up in a 3-2 loss. Arizona is too good of an offense to have a power outage like they've been having lately. They have scored three or fewer runs in nine of their past 10 outings, averaging just 2.3 runs per game during the span. Luckily they have yielded just 2.9 yards per outing during the 10-game span. The Snakes will be back in action on Monday at home facing the struggling Padres, a team 30 games under .500 and one which ranks 28th in the league in runs scored (529) through 139 games.

The 'under' is 6-1 in San Diego's past seven games against a right-handed starter, and the under s 4-0 in their past four against a starter with a WHIP over 1.30, which is rather odd. That's where the under trends stop, however. The 'over' is 5-2 in their past seven on the road vs. RHP, 7-3 in their past 10 road games overall and 4-0 in Bryan Mitchell's past four outings. In addition, the over is 4-1 in Mitchell's past five outings inside the division, while going 7-3 in their past 10 on the road against teams with a winning overall record, too.

For Arizona, it's all under all the time. The under is 8-0 in their past eight inside the division, while going 7-2 in their past nine games at home. The under has connected in four straight against a right-handed pitcher, too, while going 7-0-1 in their past eight games following a loss. The under is 18-7-1 in their past 26 games overall, and 5-1-1 in Zack Godley's past seven at home against a team with a losing record. However, the over is 5-2-1 in his past eight showings against teams with a losing overall record for some reason. Luckily, the way Arizona's offense has been going, that might not be a problem.

                          Looking Ahead

                          Monday, Sept. 3

There are plenty of afternoon games on Labor Day. None might be as important as the Cubs and Brewers battling at 2:10 p.m. ET at Miller Park in Milwaukee. Cole Hamels was horrific on the road as a member of the Texas Rangers this season, but a change of scenery appears to be just what the doctor ordered. He is pitching for a contender again, and it's like he took a time machine back to his days with the Philadelphia Phillies when he was one of the most feared left-handed starting pitchers in baseball. The Cubs are 6-0 in his past six starts. Chicago has won 10 of 12 overall, and they're 5-1 in their past six against teams with a winning record. The Brewers aren't going away quietly, however, as they're 4-1 in the past five and 4-1 in their past five at home against teams with a winning road mark. Zach Davies might not be the guy to keep it going in a positive direction, however, as the Brewers are 1-4 in his past five starts at home, 1-4 in his past five inside the division and 0-5 in his past five against teams with a winning mark.

The Mets and Dodgers will do battle at Chavez Ravine, and it's a great pitching matchup with RHP Jacob deGrom against LHP Alex Wood. New York has had some issues against winning sides lately, however, going just 21-46 in their past 67 on the road against teams with a winning overall mark. They're also just 2-5 in the past seven vs. LHP and 2-6 in deGrom's past eight outings away from home against a team with a winning overall record. The Dodgers are streaking again, winners of eight of the past nine. They are also a perfect 4-0 in their past four vs. RHP and 4-0 in Wood's past four against teams with a losing record. While they're 0-4 in Wood's past four at home, the Dodgers are 9-4 in his past 13 against NL East foes and 10-3 in his past 13 at home against teams with a losing overall mark.

                          Weather Report

The Tigers and White Sox might be dodging the raindrops on the south side of Chicago, although the forecast isn't terribly ominous with a 40 percent chance of showers.

Precip isn't expected to be a problem in Arlington, but the Angels and Rangers will have to contend with a stiff 11-14 mph wind blowing into the face of the batters.

                          Tuesday, Sept. 4

Cardinals RHP Miles Mikolas will take the ball for Tuesday's outing at Nationals Park. He has a 3.72 ERA on the road this season as opposed to a 2.31 ERA at home. However, he has a 6-4 record at Busch Stadium II in 14 starts, while posting a perfect 7-0 record in 13 outings away from home. That unblemished record will be put to the test, as the Nationals tuned him up for four earned runs, including two homers, in a no-decision over seven innings on Aug. 13 in St. Louis.

Indians RHP Mike Clevinger will face the Royals at Progressive Field. He has been hot since the All-Star break, going 3-2 with a 2.42 ERA and 54 strikeouts over 48 1/3 innings while the opposition is hitting just .218 against him. He is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in three outings against Kansas City so far this season. He was probably unhappy to flip the calendar from August to September, as he was a perfect 3-0 with a 2.21 ERA in six August outings with an opponent batting average of just .219.

Astros RHP Justin Verlander has some crazy splits this season. Overall he has a 2.78 ERA in 29 starts with a .209 opponent batting average, and his 13-9 record can be chalked up to a lack of run support for a good chunk of the season. But what's up with his home record? He is 2-7 with a respectable 3.24 ERA and .209 opponent batting average with 140 strikeouts over just 97 1/3 innings at Minute Maid. He is 11-2 with a 2.26 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 83 2/3 innings in 13 road contests with a .209 opponent batting average. The only explanation is...that's just baseball.

Mariners LHP Wade LeBlanc takes the ball against the Orioles and RHP Alex Cobb, who brings a 4-15 record and 5.11 ERA to the mound with him. LeBlanc has posted a 6-2 record, 3.95 ERA and .232 opponent batting average over 66 innings in 11 starts and two relief appearances at Safeco Field this season. It's a good thing this is a night game, too, as LeBlanc is terrible under the sun. He has a 7.84 ERA in 20 2/3 innings during the day this season, and a 2.97 ERA in 115 innings under the lights.

                            • Yelich beats throw to 1st in 9th, Brewers beat Cubs 4-3
                              September 3, 2018

MILWAUKEE (AP) Christian Yelich drove in the winning run with the bases loaded in the ninth after beating a throw from third to avoid a double play, and the Milwaukee Brewers opened an important three-game series with the Chicago Cubs with a 4-3 win Monday.

The .316 hitter hit a 1-2 fastball from Jesse Chavez right at third baseman Kris Bryant, who touched third for the second out of the ninth before firing to first. The speedy Yelich reached safely just before the throw landed in the glove of the outstretched Anthony Rizzo, allowing Keon Broxton to score the game-winner from third.

Cubs reliever Steve Cishek (4-3) loaded the bases in the ninth with a walk, passed ball and two hit batters.

The second-place Brewers pulled within four games of the NL Central-leading Cubs.

Milwaukee tied the score 3-3 after pinch-hitter Mike Moustakas drew a four-pitch walk with two outs in the eighth from Carl Edwards Jr.

Anthony Rizzo hit a two-out, two-run homer off tough left-hander Josh Hader in the eighth.

Jeremy Jeffress (8-1) got the win after pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.

                              METS 4, DODGERS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) Pinch-hitter Brandon Nimmo slugged a go-ahead, three-run homer in the ninth inning, rallying New York past Los Angeles in Jacob deGrom's latest stellar no-decision.

New York snapped a 12-game skid against Los Angeles. The loss ended the Dodgers' three-game winning streak and dropped them out of first in the NL West. They trail Colorado by a half-game.

DeGrom pitched six innings of one-run ball and drove in the tying run for the Mets, but didn't factor into the decision. He extended his streak of 25 consecutive starts of three earned runs or fewer, breaking a tie with Dwight Gooden (1985) for the longest run in Mets history.

Jay Bruce opened the ninth with a double off Kenta Maeda (8-9) and was sacrificed to third by Kevin Plawecki. Maeda hit Jeff McNeil with a pitch before Nimmo's second career pinch-hit homer went over the right-field wall.

Drew Smith (1-0) got the win with one inning of relief. Robert Gsellman worked the ninth for his 10th save.

                              ATHLETICS 6, YANKEES 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Mark Canha homered and Matt Chapman hit an RBI double to back Trevor Cahill, leading Oakland past New York in a matchup between two teams in the AL wild-card race.

The A's jumped on CC Sabathia early and pulled within 3 1/2 games of New York for the first wild card.

Cahill (6-3) defeated the Yankees for the first time in seven career appearances, the only AL team he'd never beaten. The right-hander improved to 5-0 with a 1.09 ERA in nine home starts, striking out three to leave him one shy of 1,000 for his career. Cahill allowed four hits and three runs - two earned - in five innings.

Lou Trivino relieved Cahill and struck out the side in the sixth. Jeurys Familia issued consecutive two-out walks in the eighth but got out of it unscathed before Blake Treinen finished for his 36th save.

Luke Voit hit a two-run homer for New York, which welcomed back manager Aaron Boone to the bench after he served a one-game suspension Sunday.

Sabathia (7-6) retired Marcus Semien on a flyball before surrendering four straight singles and a bases-loaded walk to Matt Olson as the A's went ahead 3-1.

New York answered right back on Voit's seventh home run that came on a 3-2 pitch.

                              MARINERS 2, ORIOLES 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Erasmo Ramirez allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings, and the Seattle bullpen shut down Baltimore the rest of the way.

Ramirez (2-3) allowed two hits, struck out five and walked none. The right-hander is 2-1 in five starts since coming off the disabled list on Aug. 12.

Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth inning for his 52nd save and 26th one-run save, both of which lead the majors. Zach Duke, Nick Vincent and Alex Colome combined to pitch 2 2/3 scoreless innings before Diaz finished off the three-hitter.

Ryon Healy had an RBI single and Dee Gordon added a sacrifice fly, both off Josh Rogers (1-1), who made his second major league start and allowed four hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings.

                              ROYALS 5, INDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jakob Junis allowed two hits in seven shutout innings, Ryan O'Hearn homered twice and Kansas City won its season-high sixth straight.

Junis (8-12) gave up a two-out single to Francisco Lindor in the third and a leadoff single to Yonder Alonso in the fifth. The right-hander hit a batter, walked none, struck out six and retired the last nine hitters.

Brian Flynn pitched a scoreless eighth and Wily Peralta reliever began the ninth with a 5-0 lead. Lindor homered with one out, Michael Brantley singled and Peralta walked Jose Ramirez and Edwin Encarnacion on eight pitches.

Left-hander Tim Hill relieved and pinch-hitter Yandy Diaz hit a hard grounder that second baseman Whit Merrifield turned into a game-ending double play. Hill recorded his second save.

Adam Plutko (4-5) gave up three homers and allowed four runs in six innings.

                              ROCKIES 9, GIANTS 8

DENVER (AP) - Pinch-hitter Noel Cuevas delivered a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth inning and Colorado rallied after squandering a five-run lead.

On an afternoon when Trevor Story hit two homers off Giants ace Madison Bumgarner and the Rockies seemed in command at 7-2 after five innings, they needed the rookie Cuevas to come through with a clutch hit.

Colorado had a 7-5 lead in eighth when Giants pinch-hitters Alen Hanson and Chris Shaw hit back-to-back homers off reliever Seunghwan Oh (6-3). Hanson tied the game at 7 on a two-run homer and three pitches later Shaw lined an 0-2 cutter from Oh over the fence in right for his first career homer.

The Rockies answered right back, with Ian Desmond starting the inning with a single and pinch-hitter Chris Iannetta later lining a double. Cuevas brought them in with a grounder up the middle through a drawn-in infield off reliever Tony Watson (4-6).

Wade Davis struck out the side in the ninth for his 38th save.

                              WHITE SOX 4, TIGERS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Matt Davidson hit a two-run, game-ending homer as Chicago scored three times in the bottom of the ninth for its eighth win in 11 games.

Davidson hit his 20th homer into the left-field bullpen on the first pitch his saw from Detroit closer Shane Greene (2-6) after Welington Castillo singled. Daniel Palka's 21st homer to lead off the ninth tied it at 2.

Victor Martinez homered deep to left with one out in the top of the ninth off Jace Fry (2-2) to put Detroit ahead 2-1. Greene then failed to retire a batter in the ninth as he blew his fifth save.

Niko Goodrum's solo shot in the seventh tied it 1-all after Chicago's Nicky Delmonico homered to lead off the game for Chicago.

                              ASTROS 4, TWINS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Alex Bregman homered for the third straight game and Yuli Gurriel also went deep to help Houston win its third straight.

Dallas Keuchel (11-10) scattered five hits over six innings and allowed an unearned run for his second straight win. Brad Peacock allowed a single with two outs in the ninth to load the bases but struck out Jorge Polanco to escape the jam and get his third save.

Minnesota's Kyle Gibson (7-12) yielded four hits and four runs - two earned - with five strikeouts in seven innings for his third straight loss.

There were two outs in the first inning when Bregman knocked his 28th home into the seats in left field to give Houston a 1-0 lead. Bregman has reached base safely in 31 straight games, which is the longest active streak in the majors.

                              NATIONALS 4, CARDINALS 3, 10 INNINGS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bryce Harper hit a tying, two-run homer in the ninth inning, then delivered a sacrifice fly in the 10th that lifted Washington past St. Louis.

The Cardinals led 3-1 with one out in the ninth when Harper hit his 31st home run, sending a 96 mph fastball from closer Bud Norris over the center field fence.

Mark Reynolds led off the Washington 10th against Chasen Shreve (1-1) with a double that went in and out of right fielder Tyler O'Neill's glove. Pinch-runner Michael Taylor moved to third on Adam Eaton's bunt single and an out later, Harper flied to deep left. Taylor slid in safely, well ahead of Marcell Ozuna's throw.

Greg Holland (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the victory against the Cardinals, who designated him for assignment July 27. It was his longest outing since a two-inning appearance Kansas City on May 12, 2015.

                              RED SOX 8, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Ian Kinsler drove in three runs and Boston continued its interleague success, beating Atlanta in a matchup of division leaders.

The Red Sox have won 23 of their last 27 games against National League teams. Boston has the best record in the majors and is atop the AL East.

Kinsler hit a two-out, two-run single in the eighth after a throwing error by first baseman Freddie Freeman prolonged the inning, making it 5-2. Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run single as Boston scored three times in the ninth off Bryse Wilson.

Boston scored three runs in the fifth off Braves rookie Touki Toussaint (1-1), making only his second start in the majors.

The NL East-leading Braves scored only one run after loading the bases in the first, fourth and seventh innings. Kurt Suzuki's bases-loaded sacrifice fly added a run in the seventh.

Brandon Workman (3-0) recorded two outs after replacing Nathan Eovaldi in the fourth.

                              PADRES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Franmil Reyes homered twice and had four RBIs, Bryan Mitchell pitched five effective innings and San Diego knocked off Arizona.

Reyes hit a three-run homer off Zack Godley (14-8) in the second inning and a solo shot off the right-hander in the fourth. Austin Hedges added a two-run single in the eighth inning for the Padres, who have won five of seven.

Mitchell (1-3) was sharp in his first start off the DL due to a right elbow impingement, holding the Diamondbacks to a run on two hits.

Steven Souza Jr. had a run-scoring single in the first inning and Paul Goldschmidt an RBI double in the eighth for Arizona. The Diamondbacks have lost four of five to drop two games behind Colorado in the NL West.

                              ANGELS 3, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Matt Shoemaker pitched five scoreless innings in his first start for the Angels in more than five months, and Taylor Ward snapped a scoreless tie with his seventh-inning homer.

Ward's two-run homer was part of a three-run seventh that made rookie reliever Taylor Cole (1-2) a first-time winner. Cole went 1 1/3 innings after relieving Shoemaker.

All of the Los Angeles runs came off Zac Curtis (0-1), the third pitcher for the Rangers on a night they started the game with two scoreless innings by reliever Jeffrey Springs before fellow rookie Ariel Jurado's four innings.

Shoemaker had missed 134 games since going on the disabled list because of a right forearm strain after his first start of the season March 31. The right-hander missed the final 3 1/2 months last season because of the same issue.

                              RAYS 7, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman got roughed up early in his return from the disabled list, Ji-Man Choi added a solo homer to lead Tampa Bay.

Joey Wendle had three hits, Matt Duffy had two hits and two RBIs, and Tommy Pham reached base three times for the Rays. Tampa Bay won its third straight and fourth of six following an eight-game winning streak that ended Aug. 28.

Kevin Keirmaier returned after missing Sunday's game because of a sore back and had three hits and an RBI, coming within a home run of the cycle.

Making his first start since Aug. 17, Stroman (4-9) allowed four runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings. It was Stroman's shortest start since Aug. 15, 2014.

Ryan Stanek opened for the Rays and left after a perfect first inning. Yonny Chirinos (3-5) followed with seven innings of relief, allowing one run and four hits. Jaime Schultz pitched the ninth.

                              PIRATES 5, REDS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Reds star Joey Votto got a new shirt from a big fan at PNC Park, but Cincinnati wound up with little else against Trevor Williams and Pittsburgh.

In the middle of the fourth inning, Votto walked over to a fan sitting along the first base side who was wearing a T-shirt that read "Votto for President." Votto asked for the shirt, and the man obliged - the suddenly bare-chested fan and Votto exchanged first bumps.

Votto then gave the fan an autographed jersey. That was the highlight of the day for Votto, who went 1 for 4 and grounded into a double play as the Reds lost for the ninth time in 12 games.

Trevor Williams (12-9) continued his stretch of strong starts by pitching 6 2/3 scoreless innings.

Pittsburgh's Adam Frazier had career high-tying four hits, including a solo home run off Matt Harvey (6-8) with one out in the first inning and a two-run single in the seventh that stretched the Pirates' lead to 5-0. Frazier also had a double and three RBIs.

Tge Pirates' Gregory Polanco and Cincinnati's Scooter Gennett also homered.

                              MARLINS 3, PHILLIES 1

MIAMI (AP) - Philadelphia mustered only four hits and no walks against Jose Urena and two relievers in a loss to last-place Miami.

The Phillies, who began the afternoon four games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East, lost their third game in a row. They're 9-17 since Aug. 6, when the led the division.

Philadelphia has scored five runs in the past four games.

The Phillies aren't out of the division race because they face Atlanta in seven of their final 11 games. But the loss to the Marlins doesn't help their chances.

Urena (5-12) gave up one run in seven innings. He struck out seven to increase his season total to 117, a career high. Drew Steckenrider pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his third save.

Vince Velasquez (9-10) allowed three runs in five innings.

Asdrubal Cabrera hit his 22nd homer for the Phillies.
