    • Allen makes 2 superb catches, Indians beat Red Sox 6-3
      August 22, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Center fielder Greg Allen made two superb catches to help fellow rookie Shane Bieber hold down Boston, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Red Sox 6-3 Tuesday night in a matchup of AL division leaders.

Melky Cabrera homered for the second straight game and Yan Gomes also connected for Cleveland. The Indians have won nine of 10, including the first two of the four-game series at Fenway Park.

Boston, with the best record in the majors, has lost three in a row for just the second time this season.

Allen doubled, singled and drove in a run. But he made the biggest impact with his glove.

First, Allen raced back and slammed into the padded wall to take away an extra-base hit from Xander Bogaerts leading off the fifth inning. Then, with the Red Sox trying to rally in the seventh, Mitch Moreland hit a long drive toward the dirt triangle in deep center. Allen slid to a stop as he caught the ball over his shoulder - it was a sacrifice fly and finished Bieber, but thwarted Boston's momentum.

Bieber (7-2) took a shutout in the seventh, allowing three runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

      YANKEES 2, MARLINS 1, 12 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton had two hits in his homecoming but closer Aroldis Chapman left the game accompanied by a trainer as New York beat Miami in 12 innings.

After Yankees backup catcher Kyle Higashioka raced home on a sacrifice fly in the 12th, Chapman came on trying for his 32nd save, but he departed with none out when his troublesome knee flared up.

Stanton, playing in Miami for the first time since he was traded after eight seasons with the Marlins, singled in the first and missed a homer by a few feet when he doubled off the left field wall in the fifth.

Higashioka led off the 12th with a single against Javy Guerra (1-1). After the Yanks loaded the bases, Miguel Andujar hit a sacrifice fly to left field, with Higashioka sliding home ahead of the throw.

After Chapman departed following a walk to Isaac Galloway and wild 96 mph fastball on the next pitch, Tommy Kahnle came on to earn his first save since 2016. Higashioka threw out Galloway trying to steal second to end the game.

      A.J. Cole (3-0) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the 11th.

      BRAVES 6, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Dansby Swanson had two homers and four RBIs, Kevin Gausman breezed through eight innings to lead Atlanta past Pittsburgh.

Swanson's first homer gave the Braves a 2-0 lead in the fifth before he sent another two-run shot into nearly the same spot in the left field bleachers, extending the lead to 5-0 in the seventh. Kurt Suzuki doubled down the left-field line, scoring Ozzie Albies from first for the third run. Tyler Flowers scored on a wild pitch in the ninth to make it 6-0.

Gausman (8-9) gave up four hits with five strikeouts and two walks, helping the NL East-leading Braves take the first two legs of the three-game series.

Ivan Nova (7-8) allowed Swanson's first home run after retiring his initial 10 batters, including the first nine on 29 pitches. Ender Inciarte singled to center for Atlanta's first hit with one out in the fourth.

      RAYS 4, ROYALS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Blake Snell helped Tampa Bay match a team record with 27 consecutive shutout innings and the Rays beat Kansas City.

The scoreless stretch ended when Snell (15-5) allowed a fifth-inning solo homer to Ryan O'Hearn. Snell struck out 11 and gave up four hits in six innings. The left-hander has 13 straight home starts of allowing one earned run or fewer, which is longest stretch in the majors since 1913, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

O'Hearn has five homers in 14 career games for the Royals, who dropped to 50 games (38-88) under .500.

Tampa Bay's Tommy Pham had three hits, an RBI and a walk but left in the eighth after he appeared to hurt his right hand/wrist area diving back to first base on a pick-off attempt.

Willy Adames had three hits and put the Rays up 1-0 on a homer off an overhanging catwalk in the second.

Joey Wendle made it 3-0 with a two-run triple off Glenn Sparkman (0-2) during the fourth.

Sergio Romo pitched the ninth for his 17th save, working out of a two-on, one-out jam.

      TIGERS 2, CUBS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Jordan Zimmermann pitched six effective innings, Victor Martinez had three hits and Detroit beat slumping Chicago.

Zimmermann (6-5) allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked one, continuing the Cubs' misery. Drew VerHagen, Joe Jimenez and Shane Greene combined for three innings of one-hit relief, closing out the Tigers' second win in seven games. Greene got his 27th save in 30 chances.

The NL Central-leading Cubs were held to one run via homer for the fifth straight game, dropping the last three in the offensive slide. This time, Anthony Rizzo led off the sixth with his 19th homer, falling to his knees as he drove Zimmermann's first pitch over the wall in right.

But that was it once again for Chicago.

Help could be on the way after the Cubs acquired Daniel Murphy in a trade with Washington before the game.

Detroit got both of its runs in the first inning against Kyle Hendricks (9-10) on Nicholas Castellanos' RBI grounder and Martinez's two-out RBI single. Hendricks gave up 10 hits and walked one in seven innings.

      BLUE JAYS 8, ORIOLES 2

TORONTO (AP) - Justin Smoak and Kendrys Morales hit back-to-back home runs, Aledmys Diaz and Billy McKinney also connected, and Toronto improved to 9-0 at home against struggling Baltimore.

Blue Jays right-hander Sam Gaviglio (3-6) pitched seven innings to snap a 15-start winless streak, earning his first victory since May 25 at Philadelphia. Gaviglio allowed two runs and six hits.

Smoak and Morales chased right-hander Dylan Bundy (7-12) with solo blasts two pitches apart in the fifth. Smoak's homer was his team-high 19th.

Morales, who homered twice in Monday's 5-3 win, has hit four home runs in his past three games, giving him 17 on the season.

One out later, McKinney took Ryan Meisinger deep for his first career homer, giving the Blue Jays their first three-homer inning since Aug. 23, 2017 against Tampa Bay.

      METS 6, GIANTS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Jeff McNeil went 4 for 4 and hit a go-ahead double with two outs in the eighth inning that lifted New York past San Francisco.

McNeil equaled his career high by getting four hits for the second time since making his major league debut last month. Michael Conforto homered and drove in four runs.

Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer for the Giants, who fell to 3-5 on an 11-game road trip - they've scored two runs or fewer five times.

With the score tied at 2, Jose Reyes led off the Mets eighth with a triple off the center field fence. Tony Watson (4-5) got pinch-hitter Todd Frazier on a popout and struck out Amed Rosario before McNeil delivered.

Conforto added a three-run homer after the Giants intentionally walked Wilmer Flores.

Corey Oswalt (3-2) pitched three scoreless innings. Seth Lugo worked the ninth, giving up on a run when Austin Slater hit an RBI single off right fielder Jose Bautista's glove.

      PADRES 4, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - Eric Hosmer and Austin Hedges homered off Tyler Anderson and San Diego Padres cooled off surging Colorado.

The Rockies arrived home after a 5-1 trip that included a four-game sweep of Atlanta.

The last-place Padres are 6-7 against the Rockies this season. Hedges had the big blow with a solo homer in the sixth, giving San Diego a 4-3 lead.

Padres left-hander Robbie Erlin (3-3) allowed three runs over five innings. He made five scoreless relief appearances against the Rockies earlier this season.

Craig Stammen escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth by striking out Trevor Story and getting Carlos Gonzalez to ground out to second baseman Christian Villanueva, who made a nifty sliding play. Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for his fifth save, with Chris Iannetta flying out to deep left to end the game.

Anderson (6-6) had pinpoint accuracy over 6 1/3 innings - 74 of his 99 pitches were strikes - except for two misplaced cutters to Hosmer and Hedges.

Odds to win the Northern Trust golf tournament this week:

          9-1: Dustin Johnson

          12-1: Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas

          14-1: Jason Day

          16-1: Eldrick Woods

          18-1: Jon Rahm, Justin Rose

          20-1: Francesco Molinari, Jordan Spieth

          Quote of the Day
“Well, I never thought Tom Cruise, never thought his movies were any good, but he’s making plenty of money. There’s a lot of things that I don’t understand. No disrespect to Tom Cruise. I’m sure he’s a great actor. But you know what? You just go about your life as hard as you can. You try to find something you love and you do the best you can at it. I never got into coaching for the money. I got into coaching because I wanted to be a quarterback coach. What the salary cap has become, what free agency has become — it’s amazing.”
          Jon Gruden

          Wednesday’s quiz
Who replaced Jon Gruden as coach of the Raiders?

          Tuesday’s quiz
Texas Rangers won the AL but lost the World Series in both 2010, 2011; Ron Washington was their manager.

          Monday’s quiz
Barry Switzer replaced Jimmy Johnson as coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

          **************************

          Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

          13) Washington Nationals threw in the towel Tuesday, trading Daniel Murphy to the Cubs, and Matt Adams to the Cardinals. Cruddy day to be a Nationals’ fan.

Addison Russell is hitting .213 since July 1; early speculation has him as the Cub likeliest to lose the most playing time because of this deal.

          12) Looking at how many starting pitchers throw 100+ pitches in their starts, from baseball-reference.com– this refers to a team’s first 125 games of the season:

Eight years ago, 1,924 pitchers threw 100+ pitchers.
This season, 998 pitchers have thrown 100+, or 48.1% less than only eight years ago.

          11) Toronto Raptors are hiring Jeremy Castleberry to their coaching staff; what are his qualifications for this job?

Castleberry played with Kawhi Leonard in high school and at San Diego State, where Castleberry was a walk-on. He also worked with Leonard as a Spurs staffer, so to keep their new star happy, Toronto brought him aboard, too.

          10) Florida State has a new football coach, Willie Taggart, who coached Oregon last year and South Florida two years ago. Three schools in three years doesn’t happen much for a head coach.

Florida State’s athletic director quit and is moving on to the NCAA; whomever takes his place at FSU will become the 8th AD Taggart has worked for in his nine years as a head coach. Thats a lot of bosses for a guy to have.

          9) 2003 Seattle Mariners may go down in history; they’re last team to go thru a 162-game season while using only five starting pitchers. ’03 Mariners went 93-69, but fell apart after that, going 63-99/69-93 the next two years.

          8) From 1992 to 2014, Detroit Lions went 0-24 in Wisconsin, losing twice to the Packers there in 1994. The last three years, Lions won two of their three visits to Green Bay.

          7) Patriots won 12 of their last 14 games against the Jets, since losing to Gang Green in the 2010 playoffs; Pats won last four meetings, the last three by a combined score of 91-26.

          6) Cardinals beat Dodgers 5-3 Monday night, despite walking 10 LA hitters; that raises major league teams’ record to 4-22 this season when they walk 10+ batters.

Dodgers went 2-13 with runners in scoring position, which cost them the game.

          5) Houston Texans are only NFL team that still has all their first-round draft picks since 2010 on their roster.

          4) There is a 15-second video going around the Interweb of a dog watching herself on TV, as she runs around an obstacle course in a competition- the little dog jumps up and down as she watches herself on TV. It is actually fun to watch.

          3) Jason Witten’s high school football coach was his grandfather; not sure I’ve ever heard of that before.

          2) Will be lot of new faces on NFL games this season; league has hired four new referees, which seems like a lot, almost 25% of the league’s referees will be new.

          1) National League teams had first shot at claiming Daniel Murphy, Matt Adams today; had they not been claimed, then AL teams could’ve put claims in for the players.

Teams in the same league have first shot at claiming guys on waivers.

Murphy would be the ideal DH; hit like hell, leave your glove at home.

          • LEADING OFF: Murphy to Cubs, Yanks check Chapman, Posey hip
            August 22, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

            RALLY MURPHY

The Cubs have scored exactly one run in five straight games, all via solo homers, but they're hoping new addition Daniel Murphy can help string together some hits. The NL Central leaders bolstered their struggling lineup by acquiring Murphy in a trade with Washington on Tuesday, and he may join the club for a night game at Detroit. The 33-year-old Murphy was the NL Championship Series MVP when the Mets swept the Cubs in 2015, hitting .529 with four homers and six RBIs.

''It's going to be more fun to watch him hit,'' Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. ''He kind of devastated us in 2015.''

            `PEN PAIN

Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman is likely to have an MRI after he experienced pain Tuesday in the same left knee where he dealt with tendinitis earlier this season. Chapman was pulled in the 12th inning of a win over Miami after averaging just 96 mph on his fastball, the lowest of any outing for him since 2013, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Chapman has 31 saves and a 2.11 ERA this season. New York held reliever David Robertson out of Tuesday's win because of a sore right shoulder, though manager Aaron Boone did not anticipate Robertson would be out long.

            POSEY'S DECISION

Giants catcher Buster Posey is expected to play against the Mets in New York, but the season might soon be coming to an end for the six-time All-Star. Posey says he's considering surgery to fix a hip problem that's been hobbling him all year.

The 31-year-old Posey hasn't homered in a span of 166 at-bats since June 19, the third-longest homerless drought of his career in terms of days. San Francisco is 62-65 and behind several teams for the second NL wild-card spot.

            WELCOME BACK

Stephen Strasburg (6-7, 3.90 ERA) returns to Washington's rotation after being sidelined by a cervical nerve impingement. His start at home against the Phillies will be his first outing since July 20. He's 10-2 with a 2.22 ERA in 21 career starts vs. Philadelphia.

            HELLO OLD FRIEND

Matt Adams is expected to join the Cardinals after being acquired Tuesday from the fading Nationals. St. Louis has charged back into playoff contention, and they're hoping a reunion with the lefty-swinging slugger can push them over the top. Adams hit .257 with 18 home runs and 48 RBIs in 249 at-bats after signing with Washington in the offseason. Adams should be activated prior to the Cardinals' series finale at Dodger Stadium.

            CHECK HIM

White Sox manager Rick Renteria will undergo further testing after an episode of lightheadedness. The 56-year-old Renteria was released from a Minnesota hospital on Tuesday, a day after missing a game.

Hottest team: Indians (9-1 last 10)

Cleveland is on its way to wrapping up the AL Central title in the next few weeks, but the Indians have bigger aspirations than a division championship. The Indians are proving their worth as a team that can take down the Red Sox in the American League as Cleveland has captured the first two games of its four-game set at Fenway Park. Following Monday’s comeback win, the Tribe jumped out to a 5-0 lead in last night’s 6-3 triumph in Beantown to pick up their seventh consecutive road victory.

Carlos Carrasco heads to the hill for Cleveland in the third game of this series, as the right-hander has yielded only one run in his past two starts. Since getting tagged for six runs in a road blowout loss to the Twins in early June, the Indians have won nine of Carrasco’s last 11 starts, including five consecutive wins away from Progressive Field.

Coldest team: Brewers (5-9 last 14)

Milwaukee slipped down to third place in the NL Central after blowing a 4-0 lead in last night’s 9-7 home defeat to Cincinnati. The Brewers have dropped four of their past six games at Miller Park, which includes three losses to cellar-dwellers San Diego and Cincinnati. In each of those three defeats, Milwaukee’s pitching has been lit up for 28 runs, as the Brewers are seeking their first series victory since taking two of three from the Rockies in early August.

Rookie Freddy Peralta takes the mound for Milwaukee in today’s rubber match as the right-hander is coming off a pair of road losses at Atlanta and St. Louis in his last two outings. In Peralta’s lone start against the Reds this season, the Brewers’ righty allowed five hits and three earned runs in five innings of an 8-2 setback at Great American Ballpark in July.

Hottest pitcher: Clay Buchholz, Diamondbacks (62, 2.47 ERA)

The Arizona rotation will be strong up front if it makes the postseason, led by Zack Greinke and Patrick Corbin. However, Buchholz has turned into a prime candidate to be named the number three starter in a playoff series as the former Red Sox hurler has won five of his previous six starts. What’s even more impressive is Buchholz has done most of his damage away from Chase Field with four wins in this stretch on the highway. Buchholz returns home to face the Angels in interleague play as the 34-year old has given up two earned runs or less in 10 of 12 starts this season.

Coldest pitcher: Francisco Liriano, Tigers (3-8, 4.72 ERA)

Detroit edged Chicago on Tuesday, 2-1 to cash as heavy home underdogs, while knocking off the Cubs for the first time in three matchups this season. Liriano is 0-for-August as he has dropped all three starts, including back-to-back losses to his former team, the Twins in the last 11 days. The only excuse Liriano is allowed is the fact that eight of his last nine starts have come away from Comerica Park, including a 5-2 defeat to the Cubs on July 4. However, Liriano has won two home decisions this season, beating the two worst teams in baseball, the Royals and Orioles.

Biggest OVER run: Nationals (6-1-1 last eight)

Although Washington is slowly dismantling its team with the playoffs being a pipe dream, the Nationals are playing in exciting games of late. The Nationals cashed their fourth consecutive OVER on this homestand in Tuesday’s 10-4 victory over the Phillies, as Washington rebounded from an ugly 12-1 loss to the Marlins on Sunday. Washington has plated at least five runs in four of the past five games, but has also allowed at least four runs in nine of the previous 10 contests. Stephen Strasburg returns from the disabled list tonight for Washington, as the OVER has hit in each of his last six starts at Nationals Park.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (6-0 last six)

Pittsburgh’s pitching was terrific over a five-game stretch by allowing four runs in four games to the Cubs and one in Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Atlanta. However, the offense accomplished very little in this stretch by scoring five runs in the Chicago series and so far only one run in two losses to the Braves. UNDER bettors are thrilled with this current homestand for the Pirates, who have hit in six straight and nine of the past 10 overall. Pittsburgh hits the road for nine games following Wednesday’s contest with Atlanta as Trevor Williams tries to get the Pirates a win. Williams is currently on a 9-1 UNDER run in his last 10 starts, including four consecutive UNDERS at PNC Park.

Matchup to watch: Cardinals vs. Dodgers

The book seemed to close on St. Louis’ season after getting swept at home by Atlanta to close out June. However, the Cardinals are not only back in the NL Wild Card race following an impressive 14-3 run, but St. Louis is breathing down Chicago’s neck for the top spot in the NL Central. The Redbirds knocked off the reeling Dodgers for the second straight night on Tuesday, 5-2, while cashing as a hefty underdog of +190.

The Cardinals will go for the sweep behind Jack Flaherty tonight, as the right-hander owns a perfect 3-0 record in August. During this hot stretch, Flaherty has tossed a pair of scoreless outings against the Pirates and Brewers, while striking out 23 batters. The Los Angeles native will be pitching at Dodger Stadium for the first time in his career looking to give the Cardinals their fourth straight win in a road series finale.

The Dodgers have lost six of their past eight games at Chavez Ravine as Walker Buehler will attempt to get Los Angeles on track tonight. Buehler has pitched well of late for the Dodgers by allowing four earned runs in his past four starts, while shutting down the Mariners in an 11-1 blowout in his previous outing last Friday. The Dodgers have won each of their past three home games when trying to avoid a sweep, including a recent win over the Giants last Wednesday.

                  Betcha didn’t know:
The Astros finally figured out the Mariners by beating Seattle on Tuesday to end a five-game skid in the series. Charlie Morton heads to the hill for Houston today seeking the series victory as the right-hander has beaten the Mariners twice at Safeco Field this season. Morton is also riding a five-game UNDER streak on the road dating back to the start of July.

                  Biggest public favorite:
                  Rockies (-240) vs. Padres

                  Biggest public underdog:
                  Red Sox (+105) vs. Indians

                  Biggest line move:
Pirates (-105 to -110) vs. Braves

                        Steel Curtain Defense

The Pittsburgh Pirates will continue their series against the visiting Atlanta Braves at 7:05 p.m. ET on Wednesday, looking to keep their 'under' streak going, too. They fell 6-1 in Tuesday's game, but the under hit for the seventh consecutive game at PNC Park. The under is also an impressive 9-1 over the past 10 games overall for the Bucs. The under is also 7-0 in Pittsburgh's past seven games against teams with a winning overall record, while going 4-0 in their past four at home against a right-handed starting pitcher/ In addition, the under has hit in four straight starts by Trevor Williams, while going 9-1-1 in his past 11 starts in the Steel City against a team with a winning overall record. And, for what it's worth, the under is a perfect 11-0 in the past 11 starts when Williams is pitching in the third game of a series.

For the Braves, the under has connected in four in a row, while going 3-1-1 over the past five games on the road. In addition, the undere is an impressive 6-0 in Atlanta's past six against a right-handed starting pitcher, while going 5-2 in their past seven on the road vs. RHP. The under has also hit in seven of the past nine when Julio Teheran is on the hill. The under is 35-16-1 in the past 52 meetings in Pittsburgh, although the over has cashed in nine of the past 13 meetings overall, and the over is 5-1 in Teheran's past six against the Bucs.

                        Looking Ahead

                        Wednesday, Aug. 22

After a low-scoring 2-1 win by the Tigers in the interleague series opener on Tuesday, it's a battle of southpaws when the Cubs roll out LHP Jon Lester to battle Francisco Liriano. The under is 8-0 in Chicago's past eight on the road, while going 6-0 in their past six interleague battles. The under is also 6-0 in the past six against AL Central clubs, while hitting in 19 of the past 26 with Lester on the hill. The under is 5-1 in Detroit's past six interleague games, while hitting in four in a row against teams with a winning overall mark. For Liriano, the under is 5-2 in the past seven on grass. As an added bonus, the Cubs are just 4-13 in their past 17 meetings with the Tigers, and 1-6 in their past seven at Comerica.

The Diamondbacks are heavy favorites against the Angels and RHP Odrisamer Despaigne, a pitcher Arizona saw frequently during the righty's time in San Diego. The under has been the play for the Angels during interleague play, particularly on the road. The under is 10-2 in their past 12 against the National League on the road while facing a team with a winning record. The under is 19-7-3 in their past 29 interleague games overall, and 9-4 in their past 13 on the road vs. NL foes. The under is also 16-4-1 in the past 21 interleague games against teams with an overall winning mark. For Arizona, the under is 4-1 in their past five at home, while going 5-2 in their past seven at home vs. RHP. The under is also 9-2-2 in the past 13 interleague battles with a right-handed starter on the bump. With Clay Buchholz toeing the slab, the under is 5-2 in the past seven, and 4-1 in his past five against teams with a losing overall mark.

                        Betting On The Wind

The winds will be humming from 10-13 mph in the Steel City for the Braves-Pirates game. In D.C., the winds will be blowing left to right at 12-15 mph, affecting the Phillies-Nationals game. There will also be a crosswind from 11-14 mph from left to right to bother the hitters for the Giants and Mets.

                        Thursday, Aug. 23

Red Sox LHP David Price will face the Indians in a daytime series finale. The under is 4-0-1 in the past five overall for Price, while going 6-1 in his past seven showings against AL Central clubs. The under is also 3-1-2 in Price's past six at Fenway Park, while going 3-1-2 in his past six against winning teams, too.

White Sox RHP James Shields will face a familar foe, the Tigers, in Thursday's series opener at Comerica. The under is 7-2-1 in Shields' past 10 against AL Central opponents, while going 9-3-1 in his past 13 against teams with a losing overall record. The over is 6-2-1 in the past nine road outings by Big Game James against teams with a losing overall mark. The over is also 3-1-1 in the past five meetings between these division rivals, and 35-16-3 in the past 54 meetings in the Motor City.

It's a battle of lefties in the San Diego-Colorado series finale. The over is 4-1 in San Diego's past five against left-handed starting pitchers, while hitting in each of the past four starts by rookie LHP Joey Lucchesi. The over is also 4-0 in Lucchesi's past four against teams with a winning overall mark. The under is a perfect 9-0, though, in Colorado's past nine at Coors vs. LHP. The under is also an impressive 23-4 in Kyle Freeland's past 27 starts at home, while going 18-5-1 in his past 24 against NL West foes. The under is 36-14-3 in the past 53 starts by Freeland overall, too.

Braves LHP Sean Newcomb will meet the Marlins in South Florida. The over has cashed in six of Newcomb's past seven road outings, while going 7-3 in his past 10 starts overall. However, the under is 7-3-1 in his past 11 against NL East clubs.

                        Betting On The Wind
In D.C. the wind will be blowing in from the left-center field power alley to home plate, blowing 12-15 mph to bug the Phillies-Nats hitters. Wind will again be an issue in the Giants-Mets series finale, gusting from 11-14 mph from the left-center field power alley to home plate. At Target Field, the A's and Twins will not only be dodging the raindrops in the middle to late innings, but they'll face a crosswind from 10-13 mph blowing right to left.

                        Friday, Aug. 24

The Phillies turn to RHP Jake Arrieta for the interleague road series opener in Toronto. The under is 3-1 in his past four starts, while he has turned in quality starts in four of his past five outings. The under is also 4-1 in his past five road assignments. The over did hit in his start last season against the Blue Jays on Aug. 18, although it was mostly his offense's doing, as he allowed just one run in 6 1/3 innings in the 7-4 win.

Padres LHP Clayton Richard will work against the Dodgers on the road. The 'over' is 3-0 in the past three outings by Richard, and the over has hit in six of his past seven, too, while going 3-0 in his past three starts on the road, too. However, the 'under' is 4-1 in Richard's past five outings inside the division. That includes a 4-1 loss at L.A. on May 25.

Giants rookie RHP Dereck Rodriguez will toe the slab against his old man's former team, the Texas Rangers. Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez's son has seen the 'under' cash in three in a row, while going 7-2 across the past nine starts. The under is also 4-2 in his past six at home, while going 2-0 in his only two starts against AL West opponents.

MLB Game Preview - Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals have seemingly waved the white flag. A team with World Series expectations heading into the season has never put it all together, and now pieces are being dealt. Second baseman Daniel Murphy was traded to the Cubs while Matt Adams was sent to the Cardinals earlier this week.

The Philadelphia Phillies have been the surprise in the National League East as they are battling the Braves for divisional supremacy while Washington is 7.5 games out. The Phillies will hit the road to face the Nationals this week in a game that surprisingly means much more to Philadelphia.

The Nationals aren’t eliminated from contention yet but they see the writing on the wall. A disappointing season seems destined to end without a playoff berth. The Phillies are right in the mix of the divisional race as well as the wild card chase and a win here would be a big boost in MLB gambling.

The Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals will face off on Wednesday, August 22nd, 2018 at 7:05 p.m. ET at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

The Phillies are 68-57 on the season. They have lost three straight games to fall two games behind the Braves for the division lead. Philadelphia can make the postseason with a strong finish but a lull can mean sitting home when the playoffs begin. The Phillies are only 27-35 on the road this season and need to buck that trend in this one.

The Nationals are just 63-63 on the season. They do have a plus-65 run-differential which means they have dealt with a lot of close-game bad luck in 2018. Washington has to be almost perfect the rest of the way to have a chance at the playoffs.

                          Probable Pitchers

The Phillies are projected to send Zach Eflin to the mound. He is 9-4 with a 3.70 ERA on the season. Eflin gave up four runs in 6.2 innings pitched last time out against the Mets but still came away with the victory because he was given a lot of run support.

The Nationals will counter with one of their star pitchers. Stephen Strasburg is scheduled to hit the mound and the flamethrower could be a tough matchup for the Phillies. Strasburg is 6-7 with a 3.90 ERA on the season. He has missed a month with a neck injury but is expected back for this one.

                          Key Stat

Five. That’s the number of teams within two games of each other in the National League wild card race. The Phillies are a half-game behind the Brewers and Cardinals, but plenty can happen down the stretch. The Rockies and the Dodgers are the other teams right in the mix.

Philadelphia is probably not one of the two most talented teams in the race, so they will need to outperform expectations the rest of the way to make the playoffs.

                          Free MLB ATS Picks

Morale might be low in Washington right now as the team seems unlikely to make the playoffs. However, with Strasburg on the mound and players like Trea Turner and Bryce Harper in the lineup, this is still a talented group.

The Nationals are the better team despite their record and recent turmoil. They are the pick to come away with this victory in MLB gambling.

MLB ATS Pick: Nationals 5, Phillies 2

MLB Betting – St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers

The St. Louis Cardinals continue their playoff push as they visit the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night on ESPN. The Cardinals have moved to within striking distance of the Cubs in the NL Central and even if they don’t catch Chicago, the Cardinals are very much in the Wild Card race.

On the other side, the Dodgers have not played well of late and if the playoffs started today they would miss out. The probable pitching matchup has Jack Flaherty going against Walker Buehler. Let’s look at the matchup on Wednesday and MLB picks.

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers
Date and Time: Wednesday, August 22, 2018, 10:10 p.m. ET
Location: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
                            MLB Odds: Dodgers -160, O/U 7.5
Probable Pitchers: Jack Flaherty vs. Walker Buehler
Cardinals vs. Dodgers TV Coverage: ESPN

The Cardinals have been just as good on the road as they have been at home. St. Louis was 35-29 in their first 64 road games, with 31 games going over, 29 going under, with four pushes. They are averaging 4.6 runs per game and giving up 3.7 per contest.

The Dodgers have not taken advantage of playing at Dodger Stadium this season, as they were just 32-31 in their first 63 home games, with 28 games going over, 32 going under, with three pushes. They are averaging 4.7 runs per game and giving up 3.5 per contest.

                            Starting Pitchers

The Cardinals are expected to send Jack Flaherty to the mound on Wednesday. He is 7-6 with a 3.05 ERA. He went six innings last time out against Milwaukee and gave up no runs and just three hits. He will be facing the Dodgers for the first time and he should have a lot of family and friends in the stands, as he grew up in Southern California. Flaherty is 3-0 on his last three starts with a 0.95 ERA.

Buehler is 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA this season. He gave up just three hits and one run last time out in a win over Seattle. He has given up two earned runs or less in each of his last four starts. He is 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA in his last three starts.

                            Key Stats

The Cardinals had won six straight road games before Tuesday night. They were also 8-2 in their last 10 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Dodgers are 9-3 in their last 12 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Dodgers are 4-1 in Buehler’s last 5 home starts. It is worth noting that the Home team is 21-7 in umpire Chad Fairchild’s last 28 games behind home plate.

Looking at the total, the Under is 3-0-1 in the Cardinals last 4 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Over is 4-1 in Flaherty’s last 5 road starts. The Under is 4-0-1 in the Dodgers last 5 home games. The Under is 4-1 in the Dodgers last 5 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 7-1 in Buehler’s last 8 home starts. The Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Los Angeles. There is an interesting trend on Wednesday’s umpire. The Under is 6-0 in Fairchild’s last 6 games behind home plate.

                            Cardinals vs. Dodgers Picks

Bettors might look at this pitching matchup and not think it is that good, as neither Flaherty nor Buehler have a high profile, but the reality is that both have pitched well this season and each is in excellent form right now. The Dodgers should be winning games at home based on their lineup and their pitching staff, but they continue to struggle. I lean a little bit toward St. Louis in this game but I am a bit concerned that Flaherty will be too hyped up pitching in front of his family and friends. If he can get through the first inning he should be fine. I think the best option is to simply take the game under the total, as both Flaherty and Buehler are pitching well.

Cardinals vs. Dodgers Pick: Cardinals and Under the total
Cardinals vs. Dodgers Score Prediction: Cardinals 3, Dodgers 2

                              • Rookie Peralta helps Brewers blank Reds
                                August 22, 2018

MILWAUKEE (AP) Rookie Freddy Peralta tossed seven scoreless innings and drove in a run with his first career hit, combining with two relievers on a five-hitter to lead the Milwaukee Brewers past the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 on Wednesday.

Christian Yelich homered and finished a triple shy of the cycle, reaching base five times and driving in two runs for Milwaukee. He opened the first with his 21st homer, doubled in the third, walked in the fourth and singled in the sixth and eighth.

Peralta (6-4) allowed just three singles, striking out seven and walking two to win for the second time in seven starts. The 22-year-old right-hander did not allow a hit until Jose Peraza's single to open the fourth.

Peralta was 0-for-22 with 11 strikeouts this season before he drove in the Brewers' second run with a fourth-inning single.

Robert Stephenson (0-2) allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings, walking three and striking out four.

The Reds loaded the bases in the eighth against Taylor Williams, but Jeremy Jeffress came on and retired Scooter Gennett on a flyball to left, and then finished with a perfect ninth for his sixth save in 10 opportunities.

                                NATIONALS 8, PHILLIES 7

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Washington over Philadelphia.

Juan Soto's two-double against Seranthony Dominguez (1-4) set up Zimmerman. His drive landed just above the right-field wall and required review before the umpire crew acknowledged the homer. Zimmerman has 11 walk-off home runs for his career.

Maikel Franco, Justin Bour and Cesar Hernandez homered for the Phillies, who led 7-5 in the seventh. Philadelphia, which has lost nine of 13, fell three games behind NL East-leading Atlanta.

Stephen Strasburg allowed five runs and seven hits over four innings for Washington in his first start since being placed on the 10-day disabled list on July 26 with a cervical nerve impingement.

Matt Grace (1-1) worked 1/3 of an inning for Washington, which has won two in a row since trading second baseman Daniel Murphy and key reserve Matt Adams on Tuesday.

                                CUBS 8, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Jon Lester pitched into the sixth inning and Chicago homered three times in a win over Detroit.

The Cubs had scored exactly one run in each of their previous five games. David Bote ended that streak with a two-run homer in the fifth, and Lester (14-5) allowed a run and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Five Chicago relievers finished. Pedro Strop came in with the bases loaded in the eighth and walked in a run, but he retired James McCann on a grounder to end that threat with the Cubs still up 4-2.

Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo hit consecutive homers in the ninth for Chicago to break the game open.

Francisco Liriano (3-9) allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Daniel Murphy singled home a run in the fifth in his first game with the Cubs after being acquired in a trade from Washington on Tuesday.

                                BRAVES 2, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. hit another leadoff home run and Freddie Freeman had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to lift Julio Teheran and Atlanta past Pittsburgh for a three-game sweep.

Acuna hit the fifth pitch out to right-center off Trevor Williams. It was the rookie's 21st homer and sixth leading off the first inning, including four in the last two weeks.

The NL East leaders went ahead 2-1 in the eighth when Freeman sent a flyball to deep left field off Edgar Santana. That came after Atlanta loaded the bases against Kyle Crick (2-2), who did not retire any of the three batters he faced.

Freeman's sac fly made a winner of Teheran (9-7), who allowed one run and two hits in seven innings while striking out five and walking one.

Brad Brach struck out pinch-hitter David Freese with a runner on third to end the eighth. Jonny Venters pitched a scoreless ninth, surviving Gregory Polanco's double off the top of the 21-foot wall in right field with two outs, to complete the three-hitter and earn his second save.

Atlanta mustered only three hits but won for the 17th time in 25 games.

                                RED SOX 10, INDIANS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Xander Bogaerts hit two solo homers, Andrew Benintendi had a three-run double to cap a big fourth inning and Boston beat Cleveland to halt a three-game losing streak.

Mitch Moreland added a two-run homer for the Red Sox, who lost the previous two nights in a matchup of AL division leaders.

East-leading Boston, which owns the majors' best record, is the only MLB team without a four-game losing streak this season.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a pair of two-run homers in his first game off the disabled list for Central-leading Cleveland.

Matt Barnes (5-3) pitched a hitless inning of relief and was credited with the victory after starter Brian Johnson was pulled with the Red Sox leading and one out in the fifth. Johnson gave up three runs.

Carlos Carrasco (15-7) was tagged for six runs, five earned, in 3 2/3 innings.

                                YANKEES 9, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Hours after All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman went on the disabled list with left knee tendinitis, Lance Lynn gave up five runs in the sixth inning and New York lost to last-place Miami.

The Yankees managed only one extra-base hit against five Miami pitchers. They committed three errors and struck out 11 times in a defeat that ended their four-game winning streak.

Giancarlo Stanton, playing in Miami for the first time since the Marlins traded him last November, went 1 for 3 with an RBI and finished 3 for 9 in the series.

Lynn (8-9) had a 2-0 lead in the sixth, but Miguel Rojas' three-run homer put the Marlins ahead.

Miami's Trevor Richards allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings and struck out nine. Jarlin Garcia (2-2) retired both batters he faced.

                                ASTROS 10, MARINERS 7

SEATTLE (AP) - Martin Maldonado and Tyler White each homered and had three hits, helping Houston beat Seattle.

Maldonado had three RBIs and White had two. The Astros led 9-1 before the Mariners got one back in the fifth and added five more in the sixth.

Charlie Morton (13-3) got the win despite allowing six runs before leaving the game with no one out in the sixth.

Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth to earn his 10th save and first as an Astro. The closer was acquired from Toronto last month and joined the team a week later after finishing a 75-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy.

Marco Gonzales (12-9) was pitching on eight days of rest but allowed eight runs and 11 hits before leaving with no one out in the fourth.

With Oakland's loss to Texas, Houston took a one-game lead in the AL West.

                                RANGERS 4, ATHLETICS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Mike Minor pitched six scoreless innings of one-hit ball to win his fourth straight, Joey Gallo hit his 33rd home run and Texas beat Oakland.

Adrian Beltre had a pair of RBI singles to help the Rangers end a six-game losing streak to the A's. Jurickson Profar added two hits. Elvis Andrus singled and scored after going hitless in his previous 12 at-bats.

Minor (10-6) was crisp while striking out four and walking one. He allowed only two runners and faced the minimum through six innings. Both runners were erased on double plays.

The A's loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Leclerc struck out Nick Martini on a check swing for his sixth save in 10 opportunities.

DENVER (AP) - Ian Desmond laced a two-run triple in the sixth inning and Jon Gray threw effectively into the seventh to lead Colorado past San Diego.

After allowing a run in the first, Gray (10-7) settled into a groove against a Padres team that was missing infielder Wil Myers after he was a late scratch. Myers sustained a cut on his nose when a grounder hit him in the face while he was fielding during batting practice.

Jacob Nix (1-2) turned in a solid outing in his first career road start. He allowed three runs over five innings.
