  • Ohtani swats two HRs, Halos top Tribe
    August 3, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs in a game for the first time in the major leagues, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-4 on Friday night.

Ohtani, whose four hits were also the most of his big league career, singled in the eighth and scored the go-ahead run on David Fletcher's double.

The Angels won at Progressive Field for the first time since June 17, 2014, breaking a 10-game skid.

Ohtani hit a two-run homer in the first and a solo home run in the third off Mike Clevinger.

Justin Anderson (3-2) pitched the seventh and the Angels' bullpen held the Indians to one run over the final four innings.

Cleveland's bullpen allowed four runs in the eighth to break a 3-all tie. Ohtani started the rally with a one-out single off Oliver Perez (0-1). He stole second and Albert Pujols was intentionally walked with a 3-0 count.

    RED SOX 4, YANKEES 1

BOSTON (AP) - Rick Porcello pitched a one-hitter, Steve Pearce homered for the fourth time in two nights and Boston beat New York after manager Alex Cora's ejection to open a season-high 7+-game lead in the AL East.

Miguel Andujar's leadoff homer in the third was the only hit allowed by Porcello (13-4), who matched his season high with nine strikeouts and walked none. He retired the last 21 batters and needed only 86 pitches in his first complete game this season.

Cora was ejected one pitch into the bottom of the first. Porcello hit Brett Gardner with an 0-2 pitch starting the game, and New York's Luis Severino (14-5) answered with a high-and-inside fastball when Mookie Betts led off the bottom half.

Severino (14-5) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, seven hits and three walks.

    BREWERS 5, ROCKIES 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth off embattled Rockies closer Wade Davis, and Milwaukee beat Colorado.

It was Davis' sixth blown save of the season and his second in as many days after losing in St. Louis on Thursday.

Davis (1-5) struck out Mike Moustakas to start the inning before allowing a pair of one-out walks. After Jonathan Schoop popped out, Thames hit a 1-1 pitch deep into the right-field bleachers to end it.

Miller Park continues to be a house of horrors for Davis, who also allowed a walk-off homer to Travis Shaw in his last appearance at Milwaukee with the Cubs on Sept. 23, 2017.

Corbin Burnes (2-0) came in with a runner on first in the ninth and retired the side for the win.

    PIRATES 7, CARDINALS 6

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Adam Frazier's RBI single in the eighth inning helped Pittsburgh beat St. Louis in Chris Archer's Pirates debut.

Pittsburgh overcame a rough outing by Archer, acquired from Tampa Bay earlier in the week, as gave up five runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked four.

The Pirates broke a 6-6 tie in the eighth when Josh Harrison singled with one out off Jordan Hicks (3-3) and Jordy Mercer walked. After pinch-hitter Jose Osuna struck out, Frazier drove in Harrison by grounding a single into center field.

Kyle Crick (2-1) gave up Jedd Gyorko's tying RBI grounder in the top of the eighth.

Felipe Vazquez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 25th save, the most in a season by a Pirates left-hander.

    BRAVES 2, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Ozzie Albies hit a tiebreaking double off Jacob deGrom, Anibal Sanchez pitched six effective innings and Atlanta beat New York for its fifth straight win.

Johan Camargo homered in the second, a drive off the facing of the second deck in right field. DeGrom hit a tying single in the third against Anibal Sanchez (5-7), then allowed Ozzie Albies' go-ahead double in the fifth.

DeGrom (5-7) gave up six hits in eight inning innings while striking out nine and retiring his final 12 batters after Albies doubled. He leads the major leagues with a 1.85 ERA but is 0-5 in seven starts since June 18, tying the most consecutive decisions he has lost in his big league career.

A.J. Minter worked around an error in the ninth to remain perfect in eight save chances.

    CUBS 5, PADRES 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Javier Baez tied his career high with his 23rd home run and took over the National League lead with 84 RBIs, helping Chicago beat San Diego.

Jose Quintana (10-7) allowed one run and four hits in six innings, leaving with a 3-1 lead.

Pedro Strop nearly wasted a 5-2 advantage, allowing Cory Spangenberg's RBI double and Travis Jankowski's run-scoring grounder before third baseman David Bote threw out Spangenberg at the plate trying to score on Manuel Margot's grounder. Baez had thrown out Jankowski at the plate in the eighth when Jankowski tried to score on Hunter Renfroe's grounder to second.

Strop struck out pinch-hitter Austin Hedges with a man on for his sixth save in nine chances.

Tyson Ross (6-9) gave up three runs and six hits in five innings as the Padres lost for the eighth time in their last nine games.

    PHILLIES 5, MARLINS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Vince Velasquez allowed two hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings to lead Philadelphia past Miami.

Seranthony Dominguez recorded the final four outs for his 12th save in 13 chances as the Phillies won their third straight to remain a half-game in front of Atlanta for first place in the NL East.

Velasquez (8-8) struck out seven and walked one to continue his strong form. The right-hander has a 0.71 ERA in his last five appearances. Velasquez didn't allow a hit until Miguel Rojas' two-out single in the fifth.

Brian Anderson had two hits with a double and an RBI for the Marlins, who have lost four in a row.

Velasquez helped himself in the third when the Phillies took a 1-0 lead. He led off with a double to right off Trevor Richards (3-6) for his second extra-base hit in his 97th career at-bat and scored on Rhys Hoskins' single.

    WHITE SOX 3, RAYS 2, 10 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Yoan Moncada hit a go-ahead double in the 10th inning, lifting Chicago past Tampa Bay.

Nicky Delmonico had a two-out double in the 10th off Jose Alvarado (1-4) and was replaced by pinch-runner Adam Engel. Tim Anderson was intentionally walked, and Moncada hit a liner over left fielder Jake Bauers.

Tyler Danish (1-0) struck out Jesus Sucre with two on and two outs in the ninth, and Hector Santiago got his first save since 2012. He walked Mallex Smith leading off the bottom half of the 10th, Kevin Kiermaier popped up a bunt and Matt Duffy grounded into a double play.

Jose Abreu homered for the White Sox, who won for the ninth time in 24 games and are just 39-70. Tampa Bay is 20-5 at home since June 11.

    RANGERS 11, ORIOLES 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor hit a grand slam and Joey Gallo and Robinson Chirinos had back-to-back homers in a seven-run fourth inning as Texas beat Baltimore.

Texas has outscored the Orioles 28-11 in winning the first two of a four-game series between last-place teams.

Rookie right-hander Ariel Jurado (2-1) won his second straight start for Texas after a loss in his major league debut. He has twice been recalled from Double-A Frisco, where he was 5-3 with a 3.28 ERA.

Another rookie, Baltimore's David Hess (2-6), didn't make it out of the fourth inning in his 10th major league start.

    • LEADING OFF: Eovaldi, Adams bring new blood to Sox, Yanks
      August 3, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

      HEY, NEW GUYS

Nathan Eovaldi makes his second start for the AL East-leading Red Sox, who acquired him in a trade with Tampa Bay, against the rival New York Yankees. Eovaldi allowed four hits in seven scoreless innings in his Red Sox debut, a win over the Minnesota Twins. New York will be a familiar opponent, and not just because Eovaldi was with the Rays. He spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons with the Yankees, winning 23 games for New York.

The Yankees will swap one new guy for another. Right-hander Chance Adams is scheduled to make his major league debut in the rotation spot of J.A. Happ, who was acquired in a trade with the Blue Jays but is sidelined with hand, foot and mouth disease. The viral infection is more common among young children than adults and also forced Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard to miss a recent start. The 23-year-old Adams is 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 21 starts with Scranton/Wilks-Barre, but he's been better than that lately, with a 3.07 ERA over his past six starts.

      BAEZ'S BEST

Javier Baez's teammates with the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs are talking him up as an MVP candidate after his recent hot streak. Baez is batting .444 (12 for 27) with four homers and 10 RBIs over his past seven games. He has tied his career high with 23 homers, and his 84 RBIs lead the NL. The do-everything All-Star second baseman homered, tripled, walked and threw out a runner at the plate - while playing shortstop - in the eighth inning of Friday's win over the San Diego Padres. Chicago hosts San Diego in another Wrigley Field day game on Saturday.

      THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Matt Harvey takes the mound against the Washington Nationals in first start against an NL East opponent since the New York Mets shipped him to Cincinnati in May. The change of scenery has been good for the right-hander once known as ''the Dark Knight of Gotham.'' Harvey has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of his past seven starts.

Harvey will start the nightcap of a doubleheader after the Nationals and Reds were rained out on Friday night. Washington has had four postponements because of weather this season, and it's the second postponement for the Nationals and Reds. Their opening day game in Cincinnati was also pushed back.

      GAUSMAN'S DEBUT

Kevin Gausman will make his debut for the Atlanta Braves, who acquired him in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles just ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline. His addition gives Atlanta enough pitching depth that manager Brian Snitker is going with a six-man rotation for now. And if Atlanta - which is fighting with Philadelphia for the NL Central lead - ends up making the playoffs, Gausman could be valuable even if he doesn't start.

The hard-throwing right-hander made three postseason appearances for the Orioles in 2014, all in relief. In eight playoff innings, he's allowed four hits and one home run and struck out seven.

      • Saturday’s 6-pack

Six active QB’s with the most NFL starts:

        251- Tom Brady

        248- Drew Brees

        214- Eli Manning

        198- Ben Roethlisberger

        192- Philip Rivers

        158- Matt Ryan

        Tweet of the Day
“I wouldn’t wish that upon anybody. It happened. It was just one of those things that you never expect to happen to you, but it happened, and I’m just happy to be out here playing football.”
Chargers’ rookie Derwin James, robbed at gunpoint in LA back in June

        Saturday’s quiz
Of the six active QB’s with the most NFL starts (see list above), who is the only one who has played for more than one team?

        Friday’s quiz
Jim McMahon was the Chicago Bears’ QB when they won their only Super Bowl title.

        Thursday’s quiz
Outfielder Dwight Evans played 20 years in the major leagues, 19 of them for the Red Sox, the last one in Baltimore.

        ***************************

        Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…..

        13) Milwaukee Brewers are 26-9 in the second game of a series, 13-5 on road, 13-4 at home; 15-6 if they won the series opener, 11-3 if they lost (7-0 at home).

        12) Bronx Bombers are 12-2 in second game of a series if they lost the opener.

        11) Seattle Mariners are 10-4 in second game of a series if they lost the series opener, 8-13 if they won the opener.

        10) Tampa Bay Rays are 14-5 in second game of a series if they won the opener, 4-12 if they lost the opener.

        9) Toronto Blue Jays are 4-11 in second game of a series if they lost the opener.

        8) There are three NFL teams this season where their backup QB’s have never started an NFL game: Carolina, Dallas and the Giants. Starters better stay healthy!!!!

        7) Took me about 35 seconds Thursday night to remember when I hear Cris Collinsworth’s voice, to hit the mute button. He just irritates me, and I’m not 100% sure why.

        6) Umpiring crew at Wrigley Field this weekend for Padres-Cubs series: Fieldin Culbreth, CB Bucknor, Angel Hernandez and a rookie replacement. This would be the opposite of an All-Star crew, no offense to the rookie umpire.

        5) If you look at the backup QB’s, Tampa Bay’s Ryan Fitzpatrick has 119 career starts, most of any backup, and he’ll start in Weeks 1-3, with James Winston suspended. Matt Cassel has 81 career starts, 2nd-most of all NFL backups.

Nike declined to extend Winston’s endorsement deal this season.

        4) There are six NFL teams with a new starting QB this season.

You look at Buffalo’s three QB’s, and they have started a combined five NFL games.

        3) You see all these legal experts and writers on MSNBC, FOX News and CNN; how much are they paid for each appearance? Some of them are on almost every day.

        2) Mariners’ 2B Dee Gordon turned his ankle Thursday night when he stepped on 2nd base as he tried to turn a double play.

I think fairly soon the major leagues will go to flat bases, to lessen the number of injuries from guys stepping on bases that may be slick, from rain during the game.

        1) Weird Stat of the Day: Rangers’ 2B Rougned Odor is the 4th player in MLB history to walk five times and hit a home run in the same game. The other three?

Hank Aaron, Mark McGwire, Edgar Martinez.

Odor is the only one of the four where none of the walks were intentional.

              Weekend Watch
              Joe Williams

Dear Commish, Can We Change Leagues?

It's no surprise that the Boston Red Sox are tied for the best winning percentage in interleague play with the surging Pittsburgh Pirates. The Red Sox have been beating everyone's brains in. However, the third-place Colorado Rockies and last-place Cincinnati Reds have really excelled against the boys from the junior circuit. The good news for bettors is that the Red Sox have 10 more games remaining against the NL, as every club plays 20 total games against the opposite league. There is plenty of money to be had in the final two months of the regular season finding small trends like these and taking advantage. In addition, the Padres have been woeful to this point, posting a 43-69 (.384) record to date. They're even worse against the AL, winning just two of their 10 games with still 10 more games to play. The next time to fade the Padres against an AL side is a three-game set from Aug. 13-15 against the visiting Angels. They'll also play host to the Mariners from Aug. 28-29 for two, see the M's two more times in Seattle from Sept. 11-12 and host the Rangers for three from Sept. 14-16. Take advantage, and circle those dates!

              2018 Interleague Records (through 8/2)

Team Record (Winning Pct. - Games Remaining)
              Boston 8-2 (.800 - 10)
              Pittsburgh 12-3 (.800 - 5)
              Colorado 11-5 (.688 - 4)
              Cincinnati 10-5 (.667 - 5)
              Philadelphia 10-5 (.667 - 5)

Team Record (Winning Pct - Games Remaining)
              San Diego 2-8 (.200 - 10)
              Detroit 3-9 (.250 - 8)
              Chicago White Sox 5-12 (.294 - 3)
              Minnesota 6-12 (.333 - 2)
              Tampa Bay 6-12 (.333 - 2)

              Looking Ahead

              Saturday, Aug. 4

The Red Sox traded for RHP Nathan Eovaldi to bolster their rotation heading down the stretch. They didn't likely add him to beat the Yankees, as he has scuffled against his former employer recently. He was tuned up for five earned runs, eight hits and a walk over 7 1/3 innings in a loss at the Stadium back on June 15. While the innings pitched is a season high, it was just the third time this season he allowed eight or more hits in a single outing. The five earned runs were also the second most he has allowed in 2018. The good news for Eovaldi is that he'll be up against the unproven Chance Adams, and the Pinstripers are just 1-4 over the past five road games and 1-4 in their past five against teams with a winning record. Boston has won 39 of the past 54 at Fenway Park, and they're 44-18 in their past 62 inside the division while going 4-1 in their past five at home against the rival Yanks heading into play Friday.

RHP Zach Eflin and the Phillies will host the Marlins on Saturday night at 'The Vault'. The 24-year-old right-hander for the Phillies is an impressive 4-1 with a 3.18 ERA in six home outings, posting 38 strikeouts in just 34 innings while the opponent is hitting just .229 against him during the six-game stretch. Overall he has lost just one time in nine starts dating back to May 30, and he hasn't lost in front of the home folks since May 25 in an interleague battle against the Toronto Blue Jays. The last time the home crowd saw him fall to an NL side was Aug. 13, 2017 when the Mets topped him. Miami counters with RHP Jose Urena, who has had a lot of bad luck this season. He was super last time out, allowing just one hit and four walks over six scoreless innings against Washington at Marlins Park on July 29. He coughed up five runs in just four innings with four walks in a no-decision against Philly on July 15. The good news for Urena is that he has allowed just two homers in 41 innings away from home over seven starts, while serving up 10 homers at home across 77 2/3 innings in 14 home outings.

In late-night action, the Blue Jays travel to meet LHP James Paxton and the Mariners. The good news for bettors is that the M's are using a pair of a pair of southpaws on Friday (Marco Gonzalez) and Saturday (Paxton) against the Jays. Toronto has been brutal trying to figure out left-handed starting pitchers, going 5-16 in their past 21 on the road against lefties, and 7-25 in their past 32 overall vs. LHP. They haven't been very good with Marco Estrada toeing the slab, either. The Jays are 3-8 in his past 11 starts overall, while going 1-8 in his past nine against teams with a winning overall record, 0-4 in his past four on the road and 0-5 in his past five vs. AL West foes. The M's are 26-12 in their past 38 at Safeco Field entering Friday's outing, and 5-1 in Paxton's past six against AL East sides, 5-2 in his past seven at home and 13-6 in his past 19 overall.

              Weather Report

The Yankees and Red Sox might see the tarpaulin on Saturday afternoon, as there is an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms forecast for first pitch. The weather isn't expected to move out until 7pm ET, so a lengthy weather delay is likely. When they do get underway there will be a jetstream blowing out to left field at 10-13 mph.

The Royals and Twins will also be dodging raindrops, and the weather is forecast to move in during the middle innings. They might be able to resume later in the evening, but the starting pitchers could potentially have their outings curtailed. The winds will be howling from right to left field at a 15-18 mph clip, so an 'over' looks like an interesting play.

In Arlington, the O's and Rangers will have a stiff hot wind blowing right in the face of batters from straightaway center field to home plate. The opposite will be the case in Oakland, as a cool wind will be gusting from 14-17 mph from home plate to the right-center field power alley.

              Sunday, Aug. 5

The Marlins and Phillies battle again in the City of Brotherly Love. LHP Wei-Yin Chen takes the mound, and he has been atrocious on the road. Miami is secretly cheering for rain in the series finale. Chen is 2-2 with a 2.18 ERA across eight home starts with a .209 opponent batting average. Pretty good, right? On the road he is 1-6 with a 10.27 ERA across nine starts over 37 2/3 innings with the opponent hitting .350 against him. Talk about stark splits. Fade Chen on the road, and enjoy good value when he is at home. The good news is that he has owned INF Asdrubal Cabrera, as Cabrera is just 3-for-24 (.125) with a home, two RBI and six strikeouts with no walks. He hasn't been as good against Maikel Franco, who is 7-for-18 (.389) with a double, two homers, six RBI and a 1.167 OPS. Those two are the only current Phillies who have taken Chen yard, however.

The Padres rank second-to-last in the majors with a .232 batting average, and they are also 29th in the majors and dead-last in the National League with only 415 runs scored. They'll be trying to sink LHP Jon Lester, who has posted an impressive 5-2 record, 2.97 ERA and .237 opponent batting average at Wrigley Field across 62 2/3 innings over 11 starts. If there was a time to catch Lester and deal him a loss, it might be right now, however. Cubs side bettors will have to eat a lot of chalk against the lowly Padres, but Lester is 0-2 with an 8.36 ERA with a .321 opponent batting average in three starts since the All-Star break. Be careful.

The Yankees and Red Sox will battle on Sunday Night Baseball, and it will be RHP Masahiro Tanaka taking the ball against LHP David Price. Tanaka was knocked around for six earned runs, seven hits and two walks over five innings on April 11 at Fenway Park, but he actually did earn the win in that 10-7 shootout. He also coughed up four runs at the Stadium on May 9, lasting just 5 1/3 innings in that one. Since the start of the 2015 season he is 7-2 with a 4.11 ERA in 13 starts against the Red Sox, and that includes a 3-1 record and 3.46 ERA across six starts at Fenway. The Red Sox counter with Price, but he has been smashed in two outings by the Yankees. He has allowed 12 earned runs, 12 hits and six homers in just 4 1/3 innings against New York, good for an 0-2 record and 24.92 ERA. The Yankees are roughing him up to the tune of a .480 opponent batting average this season.

              Weather Report

Precipitation isn't expected to be a problem in the early portion of the slate, but winds will be howling. The Padres and Cubs will see the winds blowing out at Wrigley Field from 13-16 mph. The Tigers and A's will again be battling winds at 12-15 mph to the right-center field power alley. The good news is that precipitation won't be a problem anywhere on Sunday.

MLB Preview - New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are two of the three best teams in the American League, but only one of them can win the A.L. East as they play in the same division. Neither side wants to enter the playoffs as a wild card and right now New York is much more likely to do so despite an impressive campaign.

The Red Sox have a solid lead on the Yankees for first place in the division and could really put some space between them with a strong series at home. Boston and New York will face off in a nationally televised matchup on Saturday. Each team geared up for the stretch run with trades near the deadline and a pair of new faces are expected to take the mound.

Boston is the slightly better team and should be favored in MLB gambling.

This MLB baseball game will be held at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts at 4:05 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 4th. This contest will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

                      Odds Analysis

The Red Sox have the best record in the major leagues this year at 76-34 and have been fantastic at home sporting a 39-15 record. Boston has great players in the field, at the plate and on the mound and at this point may be the World Series favorite.

The Yankees aren’t too far behind. They are 68-39 on the season and have proven capable on the road with a 30-23 record. New York would love to pull off the upset in this one to pull closer to the Red Sox as it is currently a 6.5-game span in the standings.

                      Probable Pitchers

The Yankees were hoping to have J.A. Happ as their starter in this one. A recent acquisition from Toronto, he will be making his Yankees debut, but it won’t be on Saturday. The 35-year-old’s recent diagnosis of hand, foot and mouth disease -- a common and contagious virus that can cause a rash over various parts of the body – caused New York to put him on the DL. The Yankees have called up Luis Cessa from Triple-A, another righty, but he had to pitch on Friday. Manager Aaron Boone said that the team will have to call up another pitcher from Triple-A to make Saturday’s start.

Boston will have Nathan Eovaldi on the mound on Saturday. The righty, who the Red Sox acquired in a trade from Tampa Bay last month, is 4-4 on the season with an ERA of 3.80. Most of those stats, of course, came from his time with the Rays this season. However, in his debut with the Red Sox on July 29th, Eovaldi was pretty impressive. He pitched seven innings against the Twins and allowed just four hits and no runs in a 3-0 win over Minnesota. The 28-year-old could be a key addition to the rotation if he continues to pitch this way.

                      Injury Update

The Yankees will be without star slugger Aaron Judge, who is on the disabled list with a broken wrist after he was hit by a pitch. It’s a big loss as Judge is one of the premier sluggers in the majors, batting .285 this season with 26 home runs and 61 RBIs.

The Yankees still have other potent bats in the lineup, including slugger Giancarlo Stanton, but Judge would have been a threat to hit a ball over the Green Monster in left field every time up, and his absence helps Boston’s odds of winning.

                      Free MLB ATS Picks

The Yankees chances of catching Boston may realistically be over after this series. It is hard to see how the Yankees can keep this one close on Saturday considering they didn’t even know who was going to start this game as of Friday morning.

There is just too much uncertainty with the New York starting pitching situation to take them with any confidence. The best team in the major leagues is at home, so don’t over-think this one in MLB gambling.

MLB ATS Pick: Red Sox 6, Yankees 4

MLB Betting – Los Angeles Angels at Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians are favored at home on Saturday night, as they host the Los Angeles Angels in a game that can be seen on FS1. The Angels are having yet another disappointing season under manager Mike Scioscia and Los Angeles is almost assuredly going to miss the playoffs again.

On the other side, the Indians are in firm control of the AL Central. Saturday’s probable pitching matchup has Felix Pena going against Corey Kluber. Let’s look at the matchup and MLB picks.

Los Angeles Angels at Cleveland Indians
Date and Time: Saturday, August 4, 2018, 7:10 p.m. ET
                        Location: Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH
                        MLB Odds : Indians -230, O/U 8.5 over
Probable Pitchers: Felix Pena vs. Corey Kluber
                        TV Coverage: FS1

The Angels haven’t been that bad on the road, but they are only a game over .500 at home and if you don’t win at home you are not likely to make the playoffs. Los Angeles was 25-27 in their first 52 road games, with 23 games going over, 25 going under the total, with four pushes. They are averaging 4.5 runs per game and giving up 4 runs per contest. It should be noted that Mike Trout is dealing with an injured right wrist and he did not play on Thursday against Tampa Bay.

The Indians have been a good home team this season, as they were 32-21 in their first 53 home games, with 33 games going over the total, just 17 going under, with one push. They are averaging 5.1 runs per game and giving up 3.9 per contest.

                        Starting Pitchers

Pena was awful last time out, as he gave up seven runs in just a third of an inning against Seattle. He is 1-2 on the season with a 5.23 ERA. That bad outing against Seattle has definitely skewed the overall numbers for Pena. He had pitched pretty well in his previous starts, going about five innings and giving up two or three runs.

Kluber is 13-6 on the season with a 2.79 ERA. He finally looked like a top pitcher last time out, as he gave up just one run and five hits in 7.1 innings against the Tigers. Kluber was dealing with a right knee problem before the All-Star break, but it appears he is healthy again. Kluber pitched against the Angels early in the season and Los Angeles came away with a 3-2 win. Kluber didn’t face the Angels at all last season, but Cleveland won both of his starts against the Angels in 2016 and both games went over the total.

                        Key Stats

The Angels were 5-16 in the last 21 meetings in Cleveland before this series started. The Angels were 7-19 in their last 26 road games before this series began. The Indians are 44-21 in their last 65 home games vs. a right-handed starter. Los Angeles had gone over in their last five games vs. a right-handed starter before this series started. Cleveland has been going over at home on a regular basis, especially against right-handed starters. The Over is 24-8-2 in the Indians last 34 home games vs. a right-handed starter.

                        Angels vs. Indians Picks

There are a couple of questions that have to be answered when looking at his game. Is Pena going to rebound from a horrible start against Seattle and is the knee issue for Kluber finally gone? I can’t make any case for taking the Angels, as they are simply an average team and they are poorly managed. I definitely lean toward taking the Indians in this game, even at the big price. I also can’t ignore the big trends on the total.

Cleveland has been a really good team to bet over the total at home and the Indians have been scoring a lot of runs at home against right-handed pitchers. I think the best option in this game is to bet the game over the total. If you wanted to make a parlay then taking Cleveland and the Over would be the way to go.

Angels vs. Indians Pick: Indians and Over
Angels vs. Indians Score Prediction: Indians 7, Angels 3

CLEVELAND (AP) Corey Kluber pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout this season and new arrival Leonys Martin homered again as the Cleveland Indians beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 Saturday night.

After the game, there was a report that Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia is expected to step down at the end of this season. The report by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic cited unidentified major league sources.

The 59-year-old Scioscia is the longest-tenured manager in the majors and has guided the Angels since 2000. They are 55-57 this year.

Kluber (14-6) matched zeros for five innings with Felix Pena (1-3), who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Martin led off with a homer. Martin has two homers in three games since coming to Cleveland in a trade with Detroit.

The Angels were again without All-Star outfielder Mike Trout, who missed his third straight game with a sore right wrist.

                            NATIONALS 6, REDS 2, 2ND GAME

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nationals slugger Bryce Harper was forced to leave soon after being hit by a pitch, then Cincinnati Reds star Joey Votto went wild when he got drilled in a testy second game won by Washington.

Harper was hit in the right kneecap in the sixth by a pitch from Austin Brice. Harper initially struggled to put any weight on his leg, but made his way to first base.

But Harper labored defensively chasing after a double in the seventh and was immediately replaced in right field by Adam Eaton - Harper said he's not sure if he'll be able to play Sunday.

In the eighth, Votto was hit for the second time in the game and gestured at pitch Ryan Madson as he took first base. After being retired on a forceout at second to end the inning, Votto waved at Washington's dugout, prompting plate umpire Andy Fletcher to warn both teams.

The Nationals scored single runs in each of the opening five innings against Matt Harvey (5-7).

Jeremy Hellickson (5-2) pitched into the sixth. The Nationals have won four of five.

In the opener, Cincinnati starter Anthony DeSclafani (5-3) allowed one run in seven innings. Gio Gonzalez (6-8) lost his seventh straight decision.

                            RED SOX 4, YANKEES 1

BOSTON (AP) - Nathan Eovaldi pitched eight dominant innings and closer Craig Kimbrel held on during a shaky ninth to help the Boston Red Sox beat the second-place Yankees for the third game in a row and expand their lead in the AL East to season-high 8+ games.

One night after Rick Porcello threw an 86-pitch, one-hit complete game, Eovaldi (5-4) shut out the Yankees on three hits in sending them to their season-high fourth straight loss.

Down to their last strike, the Yankees rallied against Kimbrel on back-to-back doubles by Giancarlo Stanton and Didi Gregorius. A pair of walks loaded the bases before Greg Bird hit a routine flyball for the final out.

J.D. Martinez hit his big league-leading 33rd home run and Mitch Moreland also connected against Chance Adams, who lost in his debut in the majors.

The Red Sox, with the best record in baseball, go for a four-game sweep Sunday night with David Price scheduled to face Masahiro Tanaka.

                            PHILLIES 8, MARLINS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Carlos Santana had three hits, including one of Philadelphia's four homers, and Zach Eflin allowed three runs in eight strong innings.

Cesar Hernandez, Nick Williams and Asdrubal Cabrera also went deep for the Phillies, who won their fourth straight to move 1+ games ahead of Atlanta for first place in the NL East.

Justin Bour and Miguel Rojas homered for Miami, which has dropped five in a row.

Eflin (8-3) gave up four hits with six strikeouts and no walks to reverse his recent fortunes.

Jose Urena (3-11) allowed six runs in five innings.

                            CUBS 5, PADRES 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo homered in a five-run second inning and Chicago held off San Diego.

Jason Heyward added three hits and an RBI for the NL Central leaders.

Kyle Hendricks (8-9) allowed four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings to win his second straight start.

The Chicago bullpen backed Hendricks with 3 1/3 hitless innings. Steve Cishek and Brandon Kintzler combined to retire seven straight batters, and Pedro Strop worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventh save.

Austin Hedges homered for the second straight day for the Padres.

Walker Lockett (0-2) allowed five runs in five innings after replacing scheduled San Diego starter Joey Lucchesi, who was ill.

                            CARDINALS 8, PIRATES 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jedd Gyorko drove in three runs while Kolten Wong, just off the disabled list, and Yadier Molina both had three hits to lead St. Louis.

Gyorko hit a pair of doubles, including a tiebreaking one in the fifth inning. Wong was activated before the game after being out since July 22 with left knee inflammation.

Matt Carpenter doubled and tied a career high with his 28th home run, a solo shot in the ninth off Dovydas Neverauskas. Jose Martinez doubled twice and Harrison Bader also had two of the Cardinals' 14 hits.

Dakota Hudson (2-0) pitched three perfect innings of relief of fellow rookie Austin Gomber, who gave up four runs in four innings. Alex McRae (0-1) lost in relief.

                            BREWERS 8, ROCKIES 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Travis Shaw hit a grand slam during Milwaukee's six-run first inning. The Brewers won for the fourth time in six games stayed one back of NL Central-leading Chicago.

Rookie Freddy Peralta (5-2) pitched six effective innings in his second win over Colorado this season. Trevor Story hit a pair of two-run homers for the Rockies, who have dropped five of six.

Tyler Anderson (6-4) was tagged for seven runs and seven hits in four innings. Colorado loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but Joakim Soria struck out pinch-hitter Tom Murphy swinging and Josh Hader got Charlie Blackmon to pop out for his eighth save.

                            TWINS 8, ROYALS 2
