    Hottest team: Pirates (11-0 last 11, 13-1 +1470 last 14)

Pittsburgh hasn’t dropped a game since July 10, utilizing this run to fight back into both the NL Central and wild card races. The first half of this run came at home before the All-Star break while this second part has come in Ohio against the Reds and Indians, who have been dominated by a combined margin of 50-9. The Pirates have gotten dominant starting pitching and have seen their bats catch fire at the perfect time, scoring six or more runs in nine of their 11 victories. Their run of at least 6-plus in seven straight games the team's longest since 1946 while this 11-game surge is the franchise's best run since Sept. 12-22, 1996.

The Bucs have outscored opponents 84-33 over the last 14 contests, a stretch in which the team’s starters have compiled an ERA of 2.47. Starling Marte has a 17-game hitting streak going and the offense has hit a home run in nine straight games. They’ll send Jameson Taillon (7-7, 3.80 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday afternoon in search of a sweep that would help Pittsburgh match Houston for the longest winning streak of the season (12). The Pirates’ 31 homers are tied with the Yankees for most in July, which is bad news for Tribe righty Trevor Bauer (8-6, 2.44), who failed to get out of the fifth innings against slumping Texas on Friday. Pittsburgh likely won’t have LF Corey Dickerson in the lineup due to a hamstring tweak.

    Coldest team: Rangers (4-14, -1095 last 18)

The Rangers managed to blow a 10-2 lead that they took into the seventh as the bullpen surrendered 11 runs over the final four innings, leading to a 13-10 10-inning setback. A’s slugger Khris Davis did the damage in extras with a 3-run blast off Austin Bibens-Dirkx after Keone Kela surrendered a Stephen Piscotty homer to lead off the ninth to blow the save.

A 5-0 win over Cleveland on Sunday behind veteran Yovani Gallardo marks the only time in Texas’ last five games where it failed to give up at least nine runs. Oakland has scored 28 runs over the first two contests in this four-game set and gets to face lefty Martin Perez (2-4, 8.05), who has an ERA of 10.05 over his three starts in Arlington this season. Texas has won only one of their last six series (June 29-July 1 vs. White Sox) and will need wins tonight and tomorrow in order to gain a split here.

Hottest pitcher: Tyler Skaggs, Angels (7-6, 2.68 ERA)

The Halos lost four of Skaggs’ five May starts, but he’s been lights out since despite a stint on the disabled list due to an adductor strain and the All-Star break. Although he’s coming off a 3-1 loss to Houston last Friday, he only gave up three runs and lasted at least six innings for the sixth time in seven outings. Skaggs had given up one earned run or fewer in six consecutive starts before the break, striking out 41 while walking nine. He’ll be seeing the White Sox for the first time since 2014, so most Chicago hitters will be seeing him for the first time. The 27-year-old lefty hasn’t surrendered a homer in 46 innings and will look to keep the White Sox from winning three straight and clinching this series. The Angels have fallen two games below .500.

Coldest pitcher: Dylan Bundy, Orioles (6-9, 4.57 ERA)

Bundy has gotten crushed this month, failing to pitch past five innings in any of his three starts, all of which the Orioles have dropped. After a 3-0 run in June that was highlighted by him beginning the month with 18 consecutive scoreless innings, Bundy has given up five home runs in 12.1 July frames, surrendering five earned runs each time out. He’s got a 4.69 ERA over 10 home starts and has failed to beat Boston despite pitching well, sporting a 2.29 ERA over 19.2 innings. Counterpart David Price pitched his only complete game of the season against the Birds in a 6-2 win on May 17 and has never lost (7-0, 2.96) in 11 career starts at Camden Yards.

Biggest OVER run: Phillies (5-1 last six)

Trevor Plouffe’s dramatic 3-run homer helped end a 16-inning marathon to even Philadelphia’s series against the Dodgers at a game apiece. Jorge Alfaro’s seventh-inning two-run homer helped tie the game at 4-4 and guaranteed another ‘over’ for the Phils since the total closed at 8. The 7-4 win means the Phillies have seen 11 or more runs scored in five of their last six games to extend their current run of overs, the third time this season they’ve had a run of at least five to the high side in six contests. Philly had a run of six in seven games that surpassed the posted total from April 24-30 and one of nine in 11 from June 8-19. Jake Arrieta opposes L.A. rookie Walker Buehler, who will be making his second road start since mid-May. This total has been set at 8.5.

Biggest UNDER run: Diamondbacks (9-3 last 12)

The Snakes have held opponents to a single run in three straight contests, victimizing the Cubs at Wrigley on consecutive nights after avoiding getting swept at home by Colorado with a 6-1 win on Sunday. Zack Greinke got the run started, Patrick Corbin followed it up Monday and Clay Buchholz pitched into the seventh last night so the Diamondbacks’ bullpen is really in good shape as they send Robbie Ray (3-2, 5.37) to the mound for a matinee battle of lefties against Chicago’s Jon Lester (12-3, 3.14). After winning 12 of his first 14 decisions, Lester surrendered a season-high eight runs in a 18-5 loss to the Cardinals and is battling through mechanical issues. The ‘over’ has prevailed in three of Ray’s last four starts, which includes a 20-5 win and 11-10 loss at home against Colorado on July 20. Ray is 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA on the road as opposed to an 8.06 ERA in Phoenix through five home starts.

Matchup to watch: Rockies vs. Astros

The Rockies had won 12 of 14 before losing in Arizona on Sunday but returned home to continue a stretch that calls for 11 of 14 home games. After rallying against defending champion Houston to reach extra innings, Wade Davis got lit up in the 10th inning in what ended up an 8-2 loss. Another tremendous start from lefty Tyler Anderson was wasted as Astros righty Gerrit Cole excelled again but another exceptional pitchers’ duel awaits to close out this two-game interleague set.

The teams will play two more in Houston on Aug. 14-15 but square off in Denver for the last time with first-time All-Star Charlie Morton (11-2, 2.96) squaring off against Rockies ace Jon Gray (8-7, 5.44), who has never faced the Astros. Both right-handers are capable strikeout pitchers, which should help them combat the elements in Denver in a night game that has seen the total set at 10.

Houston managed just two walks between the start of the second inning and the end of the ninth, which included a stretch of 16 consecutive batters retired by Rockies pitching. The defending champs have surrendered two or fewer runs in five of their last seven games and own a streak of seven consecutive wins against Colorado dating back to 2013. The Astros’ 35-15 road record is the best in baseball, so it’s no surprised to see them favored in Denver, where the Rockies fell under .500 (23-24) after Tuesday’s loss.

Betcha didn’t know: Ervin Santana is making his 2018 debut this afternoon in Toronto and will be looking for his 150th career victory. The veteran Dominican righty hasn’t pitched in the majors since lasting just two innings in an 8-4 Wild Card game loss to the Yankees last October. Due to an injured right middle finger that required a February debridement procedure, removing a calcium deposit, the 35-year-old will begin his 14th season in Minnesota’s 100th game of the season.

The Twins aren’t in wild card contention but are only 7.5 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central, but Santana might still find himself pitching in the postseason since it’s not out of the question that he gets moved prior to September given the trade deadline and waivers. He’s ready to come off the 60-day disabled list after 29 minor-league innings at three different levels despite his fastball topping out at just 90 miles per hour. Santana went 0-4 in his rehab stint, making seven appearances and finishing with a 3.72 ERA with 22 strikeouts and just five walks. Santana has made eight starts against the Blue Jays since his last win against them, a complete-game victory in Toronto on Aug. 12, 2011.

    Biggest public favorite:
    Astros (-130) at Rockies

    Biggest public underdog:
    Tigers (+100) vs. Royals

    Biggest line move:
Royals (-123 to -105) vs. Tigers

MLB Preview - Boston Red Sox At Baltimore Orioles

The teardown continues for the Baltimore Orioles, who have waved the white flag on the 2018 season as they start a rebuild. There isn’t much left to play for this year and the Boston Red Sox will aim to take advantage of a short-handed Baltimore team by picking up a win on Wednesday.

The Red Sox have the best record in the major leagues and even playing on the road in this one they should be a heavy favorite. Boston has the look of a World Series contender and wants to hold off the Astros and Yankees for the best record in the American League.

The Orioles, meanwhile, have the worst record in the major leagues and traded another key piece away this week for prospects. Baltimore is playing for pride at this point but it will be the underdog in front of the home fans in a tough matchup against Boston in MLB gambling.

The MLB Baseball contest will be held at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. The game will take place on Wednesday, July 25th, 2018, at 7:05 p.m. ET. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

        Odds Analysis

The Red Sox enter this matchup with a 71-32 overall record, the only team in the majors with 70 wins thus far on the year. Boston has a plus-168 run-differential already and checks every box as a possible World Series champion. The Red Sox are 37-19 on the road this season.

The Orioles are just 29-73 on the season as the team has been awful both on the mound and at the plate. They are just 17-34 at home and are staring down a complete teardown after this season.

        Probable Pitchers

The Red Sox are scheduled to send left-hander David Price to the mound. He is 11-6 with a 4.17 ERA on the year, numbers below his usually-high standards. Price has been up and down this season but has great stuff when he’s on and is capable of shutting down this meager Orioles offense. He fired 6.1 innings of shutout ball last time out in a victory over the Tigers and could be in line for another stellar outing.

The Orioles will counter with veteran right-hander Dylan Bundy. He is 6-9 with a 4.57 ERA on the year and a 1.30 WHIP. Bundy was a high draft pick once upon a time but has never turned into an ace. He allowed five earned runs in each of his past three outings and now must face off against an elite Boston lineup.

        Trade Watch

The Orioles recently dealt their best player, shortstop Manny Machado, to the Dodgers for a host of prospects. He was the anchor of the offense and is one of the best all-around players in the major leagues, so it’s a big blow to Baltimore’s chances in this game and for the rest of the season.

On Tuesday Baltimore reportedly sent closer Zach Britton to the Yankees. It seemed unlikely the Orioles would be in line to give him an opportunity in this game, but if they do enter the ninth inning with a lead they will need to find a different option.

It seems like every veteran on the team is available so keep an eye to see if any other moves get made before this game begins.

        Free MLB ATS Picks

The Red Sox are a great team already and now get a short-handed Orioles team that has given up on the season. A team playing at home can never be completely counted out but Baltimore figures to be a heavy underdog and the Red Sox will take care of business in MLB betting.

MLB ATS Pick: Boston Red Sox 5, Baltimore Orioles 2

MLB Preview – Houston Astros at Colorado Rockies

Two of the highest scoring teams in the league meet on Wednesday night, as the Houston Astros visit the Colorado Rockies. The Astros are 5th in the league in runs scored, while the Rockies are 7th. The difference in the two teams is pitching, as the Astros are first in the league in ERA, while the Rockies are 24th. The probable pitching matchup for Wednesday has Charlie Morton going against Jon Gray. Let’s look at the matchup and MLB picks.

          Houston Astros at Colorado Rockies
Date and Time: Wednesday, July 25, 2018, 8:40 p.m. ET
          Location: Coors Field, Denver, CO
          MLB Odds: Astros -120, O/U 10 Under
Probable Pitchers: Charlie Morton vs. Jon Gray
Astros vs. Rockies TV Coverage: Local

The Astros have been an excellent road team this season, as they were 34-15 in their first 49 road games, with 22 games going over, 23 going under, with four pushes. They are scoring about 5 runs per game and giving up 3 runs per contest.

The Rockies have not played nearly as well at home this season as they have in the past, as they were just 23-23 in their first 46 home games, with 20 games going over, 25 going under, with one push. They are averaging 4.9 runs per game and giving up 4.7 per contest.

          Starting Pitchers

Morton is 11-2 with a 2.96 ERA. He has excellent numbers, as he has pitched 112.1 innings and allowed just 84 hits. The only concern is his recent form, as in his last two starts he pitched just 5.2 and 4.1 innings and allowed five and three runs. The All-Star break should have helped Morton, but pitching in Colorado is never easy.

Gray is 8-7 with a 5.44 ERA. He has struggled for the most part this season, as he has pitched 99.1 innings and given up 113 hits. He was much better last time out against the Mariners, as he went 7.1 innings and allowed just one run and five hits.
Gray will get a huge test on Wednesday against a very good offensive team in Houston.

          Key Stats

The Astros were 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Colorado before this series began. The Astros are 62-24 in their last 86 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Astros are 36-15 in their last 51 vs. the National League West. The Astros are 51-24 in their last 75 interleague games. The Astros are 5-2 in Morton’s last 7 starts. The
Rockies are 5-1 in their last 6 interleague games. The Rockies are 19-42 in their last 61 vs. the American League West. The Rockies are 5-2 in Gray’s last 7 home starts.

Looking at the total, the Under is 9-1 in the Astros last 10 interleague games. The Under is 7-1-1 in the Astros last 9 road games. The Under is 12-3-1 in the Astros last 16 vs. the National League West. The Under is 9-1 in the Rockies last 10 interleague home games. The Over is 5-1-1 in Gray’s last 7 starts overall. The Over is 11-1 in the last 12 meetings in Colorado.

          Astros vs. Rockies Picks

There are a number of factors that point to the Astros on Wednesday night. First, the Astros have been an excellent road team, while the Rockies have been just so-so at home. Second, Morton has been really good almost all season, while Gray has struggled. Third, the Astros have done really well in Colorado recently. Fourth, the Astros are very good against the NL West, while the Rockies have been awful against the AL West. With all of the factors in favor of Houston, I will lay the price and take the Astros on Wednesday night. Although it is not as strong, the total could be worth a look. The Astros have been going under in interleague games and Colorado has been a good team to bet under the total in interleague games. The only concern is how Gray will pitch and that is why I am a little leery.

Astros vs. Rockies Parlay: Houston Astros
Astros vs. Rockies Score Prediction: Astros 6, Rockies 3 - Under 10

            • Versatile Romo helps hold off Yanks for 3-2 win
              July 25, 2018

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Sergio Romo relieved in the eighth inning, shifted to third base when Jonny Venters replaced him in the ninth, then struck out Brett Gardner to end the game with two on and give the Tampa Bay Rays a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

Scheduled Rays starter Nathan Eovaldi was traded to AL East-leading Boston about two hours before game time, and six pitchers combined on a seven-hitter.

New York has lost just two series since May, and both are against the Rays. Tampa Bay swept three games in late June, took two of three this week and has won six of its past seven against the Yankees. New York, 14-14 over its past 28 games, acquired reliever Zach Britton from Baltimore late Tuesday but said he will not report until Thursday's homestand opener against Kansas City.

Neil Walker hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning, but the Rays took a 3-1 lead in the sixth when Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run homer off Luis Cessa (1-2) and C.J. Cron added a solo drive against Jonathan Holder.

Diego Castillo (2-1), the second Rays reliever, worked two scoreless innings.

              INDIANS 4, PIRATES 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Trevor Bauer struck out 10 over seven innings, Brad Hand got his first save for Cleveland and the Indians stopped Pittsburgh's winning streak at 11.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run single in the third inning, and Yonder Alonso hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

Pittsburgh was seeking its first 12-game winning streak since 1965 but only advanced one runner past second base as Bauer, Adam Cimber and Hand combined for a three-hitter.

Bauer (9-6) allowed Adam Frazier's leadoff double in the fourth and Jordy Mercer's leadoff single in the eighth. He reached double figures in strikeouts for the ninth time this year and walked two, improving to 3-0 with an MLB-low 0.33 ERA in four interleague starts this season.

Jameson Taillon (7-8) gave up two runs and seven hits over seven innings in his first start against the Indians.

              PHILLIES 7, DODGERS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Scott Kingery homered and Carlos Santana hit a three-run triple in Philadelphia's five-run fifth inning, leading the Phillies over Los Angeles.

Rhys Hoskins also went deep for the Phillies, who increased their lead in the NL East to 1+ games over the idle Atlanta Braves.

Jake Arrieta (8-6) allowed two earned runs and five hits in six innings for the victory.

Max Muncy homered and Joc Pederson and Alex Verdugo had a pair of hits for Los Angeles. Walker Buehler (4-3) allowed five runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The game started less than 11+ hours after the final out of the Phillies' 7-4, 16-inning win that started Tuesday night and lasted 5 hours, 55 minutes, ending at 1:14 a.m. Wednesday.

Seranthony Dominguez recorded the final four outs for his 10th save in 11 chances.

              NATIONALS 7, BREWERS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Bryce Harper tied for the NL lead with his 25th home run, Tanner Roark pitched eight scoreless innings to end a seven-start winless streak and Washington beat Milwaukee.

Harper hit a three-run homer in the fifth against Freddy Peralta (4-2) for a 6-0 lead, matching Milwaukee's Jesus Aguilar, Colorado's Nolan Arenado and St. Louis' Matt Carpenter for the NL home run lead.

Roark (4-12), the NL leader in losses, allowed three hits, struck out a season-high 11 and walked one, helping the Nationals avoided being swept in the three-game series. He had been 0-6 in seven starts since beating Tampa Bay on June 6.

              CUBS 2, DIAMONDBACKS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jon Lester bounced back from his worst start of the season with six strong innings and the Cubs scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on Arizona shortstop Nick Ahmed's throwing error and Chicago edged Arizona.

Chicago mounted the winning rally against Arizona reliever T.J. McFarland (2-2) without getting a ball out of the infield. Pinch-hitter Javier Baez led off the eighth by squibbing a single toward the mound. McFarland threw wide of first, and Baez advanced to second.

After pitcher Tyler Chatwood ran for Baez, who didn't start because of a sore left knee, and Ian Happ walked, pinch-hitter Jason Heyward bounced to second baseman Ketel Marte. Marte flipped to Ahmed for a force at second, but Ahmed's throw to first sailed over Paul Goldschmidt as he tried to complete a double play.

Reliever Carl Edwards Jr. (3-1) pitched a hitless seventh and eighth. Pedro Strop tossed a scoreless ninth for his fourth save in seven chances as NL Central leading Chicago bounced back after losses to Arizona in the first two games of the four-game series.

              MARINERS 3, GIANTS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Jean Segura chopped the first pitch from Sam Dyson into center field to score Guillermo Heredia with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and Seattle Mariners won yet another one-run game by beating San Francisco.

Seattle came up with just enough offense to split the two-game interleague series, and it was one of their All-Stars who came through. Heredia walked to lead off the eighth inning against Tony Watson (3-4) and advanced to second on Dee Gordon's bunt. Gordon was initially called safe but was out on review.

Dyson, who shut down the Mariners a night earlier, took over and was greeted by Segura's chopper up the middle, and Heredia beat the throw home from Steven Duggar.

Alex Colome (3-5) pitched the eighth inning, and Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth for his league-best 38th save in 41 chances. Seattle improved to 27-12 in one-run games this season.

              REDS 7, CARDINALS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez homered for the third straight game, Tucker Barnhart added a two-run shot and Cincinnati powered to a win over St. Louis.

Adam Duvall also homered for the Reds. Sal Romano (6-8) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings to give the Reds consecutive series wins over St. Louis for the first time since 2011.

Paul DeJong and Yadier Molina hit solo homers for the Cardinals, who went 3-5 on their eight-game road trip. DeJong homered in the third inning and Molina hit his 14th of the season in the seventh inning.

Jack Flaherty (4-5) allowed three runs, four hits, two walks with eight strikeouts in five innings.

              TIGERS 8, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Mike Moustakas had two hits, including a run-scoring double, in what might have been his final home game for Kansas City.

A key member of the Royals' 2015 World Series championship team, Moustakas became a free agent after last season, then signed a one-year contract with the Royals in March that includes a mutual option for 2019. With the Royals last in the AL Central at 31-70, he could be dealt before Tuesday's deadline for trades without waivers.

Jose Iglesias hit a three-run homer in a four-run fourth inning against Danny Duffy (6-9). Victor Martinez had three hits, including a pair of RBI singles.

Matthew Boyd (5-9) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings, striking out seven and walking none.

              TWINS 12, BLUE JAYS 6, 11 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Max Kepler drove in the tiebreaking run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in a six-run 11th inning, and Minnesota completed its first sweep at Toronto in more than 15 years.

Mitch Garver went 4 for 6 with a homer and five RBIs and Joe Mauer had three hits and three RBIs as Minnesota swept a three-game series north of the border for the first time since April 11-13, 2003.

Toronto manager John Gibbons was ejected for arguing with plate umpire Sean Barber after right-hander Jake Petricka (1-1) hit Kepler with a 1-2 pitch that forced home Brian Dozier from third base.

Matt Belisle (1-0) pitched two innings as the Twins won their third straight, bouncing back after being swept at Kansas City over the weekend in their first series following the All-Star break.

              METS 6, PADRES 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Corey Oswalt beat his hometown Padres for his first major league win, pitching three-hit ball over five innings and New York beat San Diego for its first series win in two months.

A 24-year-old right-hander who made his big league debut in April, Oswalt took the mound hours after the Mets announced slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will have operations to remove calcifications in both of his heels, surgeries that are expected to have a recovery time of at least 8-to-10 months.

Oswalt (1-2) made his fifth big league start and sixth appearance. He allowed two runs and two walks while striking out four, leaving after 62 pitches.

Tim Peterson got four outs, Robert Gsellman finished the seventh and Anthony Swarzak pitched two innings for his fourth big league save, his second this year.

Clayton Richard (7-10) allowed six runs, five hits and two walks in five-plus innings.

                  ****************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…..

                  13) Dodgers-Phillies played a 16-inning game Tuesday, with LA using Kike Hernandez as a pitcher in the 16th- they would’ve used starter Rich Hill if they had the lead, but they didn’t and they basically gave a game away.

Game took 5:55 to play, ended after 1am, then teams had quick turnaround, playing a day game on Wednesday. Dodgers’ AAA team is in Oklahoma City, so tough to get another arm in town quickly. Phillies’ AAA team is closely in Lehigh Valley, easier for them.

                  12) Cardinals were in Cincinnati this week; they started pitchers Monday/Tuesday who were both making their first MLB start. Neither pitcher allowed a hit in the first six innings, but neither pitcher got a win, either.

                  11) Maui Classic is loaded this November: first round matchups are…….
                  Auburn-Xavier, Duke-San Diego State, Arizona-Iowa State, Gonzaga-Illinois.

Thats three pretty solid days/nights of TV watching for me.

                  10) Former Penn Quakers basketball coach Jerome Allen allegedly took bribes from a Miami businessman who wanted his son to get into Penn “as a recruited basketball player” which would increase his chance of being admitted to the prestigious school.

When the father was accused of health-care fraud, money laundering, conspiracy and bribery a while back, the government uncovered more than $74,000 in gifts that the father gave to coach Allen in 2013 and 2014.

The son got into Penn and still goes there; he never played on the basketball team. Allen got fired three years ago and is now one of Brad Stevens’ assistants in the NBA with the Celtics.

                  9) Tampa Bay beat the Bronx Bombers 3-2 Wednesday; they brought in a lefty reliever in the last inning, moved Sergio Romo to 3B for a batter, so Romo could come back and face the next hitter. Romo struck out Brett Gardner to end the game; Kevin Cash is doing an amazing job, having that roster at 52-50.

                  8) Bronx catcher Gary Sanchez got pummeled on social media Monday night after he failed to hustle on a couple of key plays that were important in a 7-6 Tampa Bay win.

Sanchez is a lousy defensive catcher who is hitting .188; why is he the starter? If he’s not going to hustle, why is he even in the major leagues?

Tuesday, Sanchez was put on the DL with a groin injury, which diffuses the issue. Whether he is really hurt or just getting 10 days off to shut the media up is open for debate.

                  7) Random trivia: An actor named John Hurt has 207 movie/TV credits to his name; he died in 43 different movies, which appears to be the all-time record.

                  6) Obscure TV/movie trivia: I’m watching an old Law and Order re-run the other night, from the series’ first year or two— one of the opposing lawyers is the guy who played the manager of the baseball team in Bull Durham. So I look the actor up on the Interweb.

Turns out that the Law and Order episode was Trey Wilson’s last acting job; he died from a cerebral hemorrhage a few weeks before his 41st birthday, only a couple years after he made Bull Durham. 41 is way too young to die.

                  5) Angels are wasting Mike Trout’s prime; Angels lost 5-3 to the White Sox Monday night, with Trout walking four times and hitting a sac fly. Five plate appearances, no official AB’s.

Justin Upton usually hits behind Trout; he’s come to bat with 309 men on base and knocked in only 36 of them (19 of 48 from 3rd base). Knocking in 11.7% of baserunners isn’t good for the guy you have batting cleanup.

                  4) Baseball doings:
                  — Red Sox acquired P Nathan Eovaldi from Tampa Bay for rookie P Jaylen Beeks.
                  — Mets put Yoenis Cespedes (heel) back on the DL. He’ll have surgery and may not even be back for the start of next season.
                  — A’s P Kendall Graveman (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery
                  — Orioles sent P Zach Britton to division rival New York, getting three pitching prospects in return: Dillon Tate, Josh Rogers, and Cody Carroll. Tate is 5-2, 3.38 in 15 Eastern League starts (AA level) this season.

                  3) Looking at an action chart for Week 1 NFL games, Texans-Patriots is getting most evenly balanced action at William Hill books. 52% of play is on New England (-6.5).

Most one-sided action is on the Falcons (+4.5, 95% of $$ bet), Colts (-2.5, 92%).

                  2) Cleveland QB Baker Mayfield got a $21.85M signing bonus; a 4-year, $32.68M fully guaranteed deal overall. Mayfield told his agent not to quibble on some contract details so he could be in camp on Day 1 to compete for the starting job.

                  1) Teams that use defensive shifts the least: Angels, Rangers, Cubs.

When Joe Maddon managed in Tampa, he was at forefront of using shifts, so thats an interesting change.

                            Hottest team: Pirates (11-1 last 12, 13-2 +1370 last 15)

Even though their 11-game run was snapped by Trevor Bauer and Cleveland in a 4-0 loss on Wednesday afternoon, the Pirates still deserve respect as the league’s hottest team despite no longer owning baseball’s longest winning streak. The A's have won seven of eight, including five straight, but we'll discuss their exploits below. Although Oakland's comebacks have been impressive, the Bucs have outscored opponents 84-37 over the last 15 contests, a stretch in which the team’s starting pitchers have compiled an ERA of under 2.50.

Offensively, Pittsburgh’s 31 homers are tied with the Yankees for most in July. Leadoff hitter Corey Dickerson, the left fielder, missed yesterday’s game due to a hamstring tweak. Standout center fielder Starling Marte exited Wednesday after being drilled by Trevor Bauer pitch in the first inning. Both may miss this series opener. Mets lefty Steven Matz has surrendered just two homers in four starts this month but has nonetheless lost in his last three appearances. The Pirates haven’t dropped two straight since July 6-7 and send rookie Nick Kingham to the mound for his first career encounter with the Mets. He's given up seven homers over 21.2 innings this month but is 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA at PNC Park. Pittsburgh is heavily favored (-160) at home against New York.

                            Coldest team: Rangers (4-15, -1195 last 19)

After blowing a 10-2 lead that it took into the seventh inning on Tuesday by giving up 11 unanswered runs, Texas managed to top itself in adding to its misery when Jose Leclerc surrendering a go-ahead two-run HR to Khris Davis on Wednesday with victory only one strike away. Davis won Tuesday's game with a 3-run blast off in the 10th after closer Keone Kela surrendered a Stephen Piscotty homer to lead off the ninth to blow the save.

Kela should be available again after being asked to get five outs on Tuesday, so the Rangers will likely have their closer in the mix if they're in position to avoid a sweep. Oakland is now a season-high 17 games over .500 after a 26-7 run since June 16 and have rallied from behind 17 times per the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser. Davis has homered in four consecutive contests and six straight games against Texas. He's up to 27 HRs and is batting .333 over nine career at-bats against Rangers starter Bartolo Colon (5-8, 4.85), connecting on one dinger. Texas has lost five of its last six series and is an underdog (+125) here. Most books list the A's at -135.

Hottest pitcher: Dereck Rodriguez, Giants (5-1, 2.72 ERA)

The Giants rookie, son of Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez, has wasted no time getting comfortable in the bigs. The 26-year-old has looked poised beyond his years and has helped San Francisco win eight of his 10 starts, including seven consecutively. In that span, he’s 5-0, surrendering just two homers and nine earned runs over 41 innings. He hasn’t faced any Brewers hitters in the majors but is hoping to remain perfect at AT&T Park, where he’s 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA over five career games. Counterpart Wade Miley (1-1, 1.56) shut out the Dodgers threw six innings in his last start, but the Brewers are an underdog here (+105). The Giants are slightly favored (-115) as they open a four-game set against Milwaukee before venturing back out on the road for six games against NL West opponents.

Coldest pitcher: Jake Junis, Royals (5-10, 5.03 ERA)

The second-year righty had won 13 of his first 18 decisions after improving to 4-2 with a strong performance against the Tigers on May 6 but is just 1-8 since. His only victory came on May 18 vs. the same Yankees team he’ll square off against tonight. Junis’ ERA has climbed over 1.5 runs since he saw the Bronx Bombers last, which includes opening July by giving up nine runs (eight earned) at home against the Rangers. He immediately went on the disabled list due to a sore back and surfaced again last Saturday, giving up one run over four innings against the Twins.

Junis was limited by a pitch count but didn’t let up a homer after allowing 12 over a five-start span from June 8-July 2, suffering a loss each time out. Kansas City is counting on him rebounding over the final few months so this is a big start for him and counterpart Sonny Gray, who has put together wins in consecutive starts for the first time since joining the Yanks last August. New York is heavily favored (-250) in the Bronx, where Junis was touched up for six runs over 5.2 innings in an 11-3 loss last Sept. 25. The Royals are Thursday’s biggest underdog (+240)

Biggest OVER run: Twins (10-5 last 15)

After scoring six runs in the 11th inning to sweep the Blue Jays in Toronto, the Twins will wrap up a 10-game road trip at Fenway, opening a four-game set. The 12 runs Minnesota scored on Wednesday were a season-best as Mitch Garver came up with a career-high five RBI, banging out four hits. The Twins won two of three in Minneapolis when the teams met from June 19-21 and the ‘over’ hit in two of the contests. Kyle Gibson (4-7, 3.57) has been decent for the past few months and squares off against Boston lefty Brian Johnson, who will be moving back into the bullpen to make way for the newly acquired Nathan Eovaldi following this start. Boston had a 5-0 lead through two innings in Baltimore but ended up rained out. The total has been set at 10.

Biggest UNDER run: Diamondbacks (10-3 last 13)

The Diamondbacks have allowed just five runs over the last four games. Despite failing to sweep the Cubs after a 2-1 loss on Wednesday, Robbie Ray pitched seven innings and allowed a single run, becoming the fourth straight Snakes starter to come through with a quality start. Zack Greinke got the run started, Patrick Corbin followed it up Monday and Clay Buchholz pitched into the seventh on Tuesday so the bullpen is in fantastic shape as they send Zack Godley (11-6, 4.65) to the mound to oppose Tyler Chatwood (4-5, 4.84), the major-league leader in walks.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Braves

The National League race is tightly-packed, featuring 11 teams that have picked up 50 or more wins. The Dodgers lead the NL West by a half-game while the Braves trail the Phillies by 1.5 in the NL East, so the fact they’re basically even illustrates why all eyes will be on this four-game set all weekend.

L.A. won two of three when these teams met at Dodger Stadium from June 8-10 and is wrapping up a 10-game road trip, closing a stretch that has seen them play 17 of 20 outside Chavez Ravine. They’re 7-6 away from home in July so far and need at least a split to post their third consecutive winning month on the road. Atlanta is opening up a seven-game homestand and is just 2-3 at SunTrust Park in July as it sends Anibal Sanchez (5-2, 2.76) to the mound. He’s 1-1 with a 1.99 ERA at home since joining the Braves and unexpected rescuing his career. Both Manny Machado (.500, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and Logan Forsythe (.556, 1 HR, 5 RBI) have hit him extremely well in limited career matchups.

The Dodgers counter with lefty Rich Hill (3-4, 4.26), who nearly came out of the bullpen in Philly on Tuesday night and will look to continue an excellent stretch that has seen him surrender two or fewer runs in four of his last five starts, striking out 33 hitters in 25.2 innings. Hill’s form is one factor in L.A. being favored (-125) for the 30th time in 31 games. The total for this series opener has been set at 9.

                            Betcha didn’t know:
Venezuelan 22-year-old Ranger Suarez will make his debut for Philadelphia as they visit Cincinnati to open a four-game set. He’ll become the first left-handed starter the Phillies have sent to the mound since Adam Morgan back on Sept. 28, 2016, a span of 267 games. Suarez has made three starts in Triple-A, allowing one run in 15.2 innings. He had a WHIP of 1.28 at Lehigh Valley and 1.12 over 12 starts at Double-A Reading and has struck out 66 while walking 24 over 90.2 innings. Suarez has lit up the minors since being signed in 2012 and will wear No. 70 as he attempts to take the first step in becoming an x-factor down the stretch for the first-place Phils. He’s one of the organization’s top prospects whose name was included in trade talks with Baltimore for Manny Machado. His fastball gets up in the mid-90s and he throws a slider and a changeup.

                            Biggest public favorite:
                            Nationals (-190) at Marlins

                            Biggest public underdog:
                            Mets (+150) vs. Pirates

                            Biggest line move:
Yankees (-270 to -240) vs. Royals

                                July 26, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                                OCTOBER PREVIEW

Several top teams in the National League are matched up against fellow playoff contenders. Arizona wraps up a four-game series at Wrigley Field versus the Cubs. Max Muncy and the Dodgers host Atlanta. And it's Milwaukee in San Francisco to face rookie Dereck Rodriguez. The son of Hall of Fame catcher Ivan ''Pudge'' Rodriguez is 5-1 with a 2.72 ERA, and the Giants have won his last six starts.

                                BIG IN TEXAS

Khris Davis and the surging Athletics go for a four-game sweep at Texas. Davis homered two more times and had five RBIs during Wednesday night's 6-5 victory, including a two-run shot in the ninth inning as Oakland rallied again to beat the Rangers. Davis hit a three-run homer in the seventh to pull the A's to 5-4 and has gone deep in six consecutive games against Texas. He has 25 homers and 57 RBIs in 49 career games vs. the Rangers - 15 homers and 31 RBIs in 26 road games. Oakland has won five straight and 26 of 33 overall.

                                BULLPEN BRIGADE

Newly acquired reliever Zach Britton joins the Yankees as they open a homestand against last-place Kansas City. New York manager Aaron Boone said Britton will fill a variety of roles but emphasized that Aroldis Chapman remains the closer. The Yankees acquired Britton, a two-time All-Star, from the rebuilding Orioles for three pitching prospects late Tuesday. He bolsters an imposing bullpen that also includes David Robertson, Dellin Betances, Chad Green, Jonathan Holder and Adam Warren. ''Having so many quality guys, that allows us to really preserve and protect them,'' Boone said. ''We're certainly as capable as anyone.'' New York is 5+ games behind the AL East-leading Red Sox, who obtained starter Nathan Eovaldi from Tampa Bay less than 12 hours after the Britton deal.

                                MOVING ON

Stephen Strasburg (6-7, 3.90 ERA) is back on the mound for the Nationals in Miami, making his second start since coming off the disabled list. After getting pulled from his last outing on his 30th birthday, when he allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings during a loss to Atlanta, Strasburg had a heated exchange in the dugout with teammate and fellow ace Max Scherzer. Strasburg has lost three straight starts and four of five. But he is 7-0 in his last seven starts against the Marlins.

                                FOR THE RECORD

Bartolo Colon faces one of his 10 former teams in his fourth attempt to break a tie with Dennis Martinez for the most major league wins by a pitcher born in Latin America. Colon and Martinez each have 245 career victories. Colon, the portly 45-year-old right-hander now with the Texas Rangers, starts against Oakland. He was 28-15 with a 2.99 ERA in 54 starts for the Athletics from 2012-13, and has gone 10-6 with a 3.36 ERA in 22 career starts against them.

                                FAMILIAR FACE

Baltimore right-hander Alex Cobb (2-13, 6.17 ERA) takes on his former team when the struggling Orioles begin a four-game series with Tampa Bay. Cobb is 0-2 in two career starts against the Rays. He left them to sign a $57 million, four-year contract with Baltimore last offseason.
