  • Weekend Road Warriors

Last week the look at road teams for the weekend proved to work out quite well as the Golden State Warriors were able to close the NBA Finals out on the road in Game 4, while the Milwaukee Brewers took two of three from the Phillies.

Others like Seattle, Cleveland, and the L.A. Angels who were briefly touched on all won their respective series' as well last weekend as backing those quality MLB teams away from home turned out to go quite well.

This weekend it's a heavy focus on the MLB again as we’ve got some strong teams wearing their visiting colors again, including some rematches from a weekend ago. Milwaukee hosts Philadelphia this time around, as Cleveland is also hosting their opponent from last week, the Minnesota Twins.

Of those two, I'd be more inclined to look at Philly to get some measure of revenge over Milwaukee rather than backing the Twins in Cleveland, but there are actually a couple other series I want to look at here.

Washington Nationals Head North of the Border For a Three-Game Set with Toronto

Toronto has one of the worst records in all of baseball since the middle of April and after getting swept by the Rays this week, they head home to host a very good Washington Nationals team.

Giving the Nationals another hitter in their lineup with the DH isn't ideal for the Blue Jays, but when you've also got to face the likes of Gio Gonzalez, Max Scherzer, and Tanner Roark, this weekend could get ugly for Toronto fans.

Toronto does counter with two of their bigger names in Aaron Sanchez and Marco Estrada, but neither guy have even been close to the level of expectations they had for themselves (as well as the fanbase's expectations for them), and I expect the Blue Jays to find themselves on the wrong end of yet another series when all is said and done here.

The Red Sox are in the Pacific Northwest in a Possible Playoff Preview

Boston begins a four-game set with the smoking hot Seattle Mariners this week in what could end up being a playoff preview. These two teams enter the weekend atop their respective divisions, but in very tight races with division rivals from New York and Houston respectively.

With how well both sides have played through 2.5 months of the year so far, squaring off in a four-game set against one another is a nice litmus test for both organizations at this stage of the season.

Boston has opened as a -130 road favorite for the opener tonight, and it will be interesting to see how their priced the rest of the weekend. Right off the top I think this series is a prime candidate for a 2-2 split, but figuring out how that split happens is why they play the games.

I wouldn't shy away from backing Boston here though if the price is right – they'll likely be road 'dogs Friday vs James Paxton, and quite possibly underdogs for the final two games as well – so that's where I'll be leaning in this series.

The Giants and Dodgers Renew Acquaintances Out in L.A.

San Francisco isn't what I'd call a great team to back on the road, but assuming that they'll be sizable underdogs in at least two of their three games with the Dodgers this weekend, they are worth some consideration.

L.A. has played some great baseball over the past month to climb back into the race in the NL West, but they are still the 2nd worst team in terms of betting units lost this year at -$1864 on $100 bets each game. Only the very bad Baltimore Orioles have lost more units than the Dodgers have, and now that they are playing better baseball, those inflated lines start to show up again.

At 14-24 SU on the road (pending Thursday's afternoon game in Miami), the Giants aren't the best money-earners as visitors, but they tend to put their best foot forward in games against L.A, and do have Madison Bumgarner scheduled to go on Saturday.

San Francisco has also already taken six of the first 10 meetings with L.A this year, (2-2 SU in L.A.), so asking them to win once, and maybe even twice this weekend isn't totally out of the question.

L.A. is going with Ross Stripling and Alex Wood for Games 1 and 2 so it's not like it's the best of the best of L.A.'s rotation that San Francisco will be up against, and if the price is right, backing the Giants is another option I'll be looking at.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....

      • LEADING OFF: Story returns home, Cubs-Cards face off
        June 14, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

        TEXAS STORY

Colorado shortstop Trevor Story gets to play a big league game near home for the first time when the Rockies open an interleague series Friday night at the Texas Rangers, in a stadium only a few miles from his hometown of Irving, Texas. The Rockies last played at Texas in 2016, which was Story's standout rookie season. But Story, the 45th overall pick in the 2011 draft out of Irving High, suffered a season-ending left thumb injury about two weeks before that series. Another Texas native starts the opener for the Rockies in right-hander Chad Bettis (4-1), who is from Lubbock and went to Texas Tech. He got a no decision in the Rockies' 12-9 win during that August 2016 series when he allowed five runs in five innings.

        ACES UP

Two of the National League's top pitchers this season will face off when the Chicago Cubs open a weekend series at the St. Louis Cardinals. Jon Lester (7-2) takes the mound for the Cubs, who are coming off two straight losses at Milwaukee, and the left-hander is fourth in the NL in ERA (2.22). Michael Wacha, meanwhile, is 8-1 and seventh in the league with a 2.47 ERA - providing a much-needed boost for a Cardinals team that's 4-5 in its last nine games against Miami, Cincinnati and San Diego.

        BACK IN TOWN

Nathan Eovaldi (1-1) takes the ball for the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium, his fourth outing since becoming the 12th pitcher to start a major league game following multiple Tommy John surgeries. Eovaldi pitched for the Yankees from 2015-16, going 14-3 for them in 2015, but has never faced New York. ''I wish I would have been able to finish on a healthy note. Other than that, I really enjoyed my time there,'' Eovaldi said.

Jonathan Loaisiga comes up from Double-A Trenton to make his big league debut for the Yankees, starting in place of injured Masahiro Tanaka. The 23-year-old Loaisiga, from Nicaragua, returned to the mound last year from Tommy John surgery. ''Super excited. This is a great opportunity the Yankees are giving me,'' Loaisiga said through a translator. ''It's been a tough road for me to get here and now it's about enjoying this moment.''

        GIO WATCH

Gio Gonzalez (6-2, 2.65 ERA) had his worst start of the season in his last outing, allowing four runs in 3 1/3 innings against the San Francisco Giants last week. The Washington Nationals left-hander will return to the mound when he makes an interleague start against the Toronto Blue Jays.

        • Friday's Diamond Notes
          June 15, 2018

Hottest team: Astros (8-0 last eight)

The defending champions are hitting their stride following an easy three-game sweep of the Athletics. Houston improved to 7-0 on its current road trip against Texas and Oakland, while scoring 26 runs in the last three wins at the Coliseum. The Astros are not afraid to cover heavy numbers, as Houston has laid at least -170 in six of these wins, while cashing on the run-line in six of the past eight victories.

Houston hopes to avoid a letdown this weekend with a visit to struggling Kansas City, who has lost nine of its past 10 games. Charlie Morton began the season at 7-0, but the Astros right-hander is winless in his last three starts, while failing to escape the fourth inning in his last outing at Texas. Morton only allowed one hit, but walked six batters as the Astros eventually beat the Rangers, 4-3.

Coldest team: Rangers (3-9 last 12)

The other Lone Star State squad is going in the opposite direction at the moment as Texas returns home to host Colorado. The Rangers were swept in a four-game home series by the Astros before traveling west and dropping a pair of interleague contests to the Dodgers. Texas has allowed 39 runs during this six-game skid, marking its longest losing streak of the season.

The Rangers will turn to rookie Yohander Mendez, who faces a Rockies’ club that has lost six of their previous seven games. Mendez has struggled on the minor-league level by posting an 0-6 record and 5.26 ERA in 10 starts at Triple-A Round Rock, while Texas tries to improve on a 1-8 mark in its past nine series openers.

Hottest pitcher: Ross Stripling, Dodgers (5-1, 1.65 ERA)

Have the Dodgers found their new ace with Clayton Kershaw on the disabled list? We won’t go that far, but Stripling has been a solid replacement at the top of the Los Angeles rotation of late. The right-hander has won five consecutive starts, while yielding two earned runs or less in each of his last seven starts. Stripling shut down the Braves in his last appearance by allowing two earned runs and four hits in 6.2 innings of a 7-2 victory last Sunday. Stripling faces the Giants, who own a 6-4 mark against the Dodgers this season.

Coldest pitcher: Jake Arrieta, Phillies (5-4, 2.97 ERA)

It’s odd that a pitcher owning an ERA below 3.00 would be in this category, but Arrieta has struggled of late. The former Cy Young winner has been tagged for 10 runs (nine earned) in his last two starts, losses to the Giants and Brewers. Arrieta was rolling prior to this cold stretch by not allowing a run in wins against the Braves and Dodgers, but has given up at least five runs in three starts this season. The right-hander receives another crack against Milwaukee tonight at Miller Park as Philadelphia tries to improve on a 3-8 mark in its last 11 road games.

Biggest OVER run: Marlins (7-3 last 10 on road)

Miami couldn’t pull off the four-game sweep of San Francisco on Thursday, but cashed the OVER in a 16-inning defeat, 6-3 on an 8 total. The Marlins travel to Baltimore for an interleague set between a pair of last-place teams as Miami has been a solid team to back with the OVER on the road of late. Miami has allowed four runs or more seven times in the past nine away contests, including three straight OVERS in road series openers. Jose Urena has given up at least three runs in six of his last seven starts for Miami, although the OVER is 3-4 in this stretch.

Biggest UNDER run: Yankees (8-0 last eight)

New York’s offense hasn’t been impressive of late, but the Yankees received a pair of home runs in a four-run fifth inning in Thursday’s 4-3 victory over the Rays. Second baseman Gleyber Torres continued his solid season by knocking out his 13th home run, while the Yankees’ pitching staff has allowed three runs or less in seven of the last eight games. The Yankees look to beat Tampa Bay once again tonight as right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga makes his Major League debut after compiling a 6-1 record and 3.00 ERA in the minors this season.

Matchup to watch: Cubs vs. Cardinals

The last time these NL Central rivals hooked up at Busch Stadium last month, the Cardinals pulled off a three-game sweep of the Cubs, aided by a pair of walk-off wins. Both teams have stumbled of late as Chicago dropped the final two games at Milwaukee (both by shutout), while St. Louis was tripped up by San Diego in a pair of 4-2 losses after capturing the series opener.

Jon Lester heads to the mound for Chicago, coming off consecutive scoreless outings in victories over the Mets and Pirates. The southpaw tossed seven innings in each start, while yielding a total of three hits and striking out 12 batters. The Cubs have won four of Lester’s last five outings against the Cardinals since last season, but St. Louis won the most recent matchup on May 6 at Busch Stadium, 4-3.

Michael Wacha counters for St. Louis, as the Cardinals have compiled a strong 10-2 record in his previous 12 starts. Wacha is fresh off three wins in his last three trips to the hill, including beating Cincinnati for the third time this season in a 6-4 triumph last Saturday. The Redbirds have won seven of Wacha’s eight starts at Busch Stadium this season, including the one-run walk-off win in 14 innings opposite Lester last month.

Betcha didn’t know: The Mariners were slowed up by the Red Sox on Thursday in a 2-1 home setback. However, Seattle has not fallen behind in a series, 2-0 yet this season. The M’s own a perfect 6-0 record in Game 2’s of a series following a loss in the opener as James Paxton heads to the hill tonight. Paxton is putting together a terrific season at 6-1 and an ERA of 3.02 to go along with a no-hitter, but the Mariners have posted a 3-3 record in his six starts at Safeco Field this season.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-210) vs. Twins

Biggest public underdog: Phillies (+125) at Brewers

Biggest line move: Diamondbacks (-130 to -140) vs. Mets

            Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

            Streaking:
Ross Stripling, Los Angeles Dodgers (5-1, 1.65 ERA, $70)

Stripling has been a revelation for the Dodgers rotation since joining it back at the end of April and he seems to be getting stronger as he gets more comfortable with his role.

The third-year man has a 1.15 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP, while racking up 41 punch outs to just two walks in his last five starts. Stripling will look to stay hot as he and the Dodgers welcome the Giants to town. Los Angeles is a big -225 favorite.

            Slumping:
Matt Harvey, Cincinnati Reds (1-4, 5.97 ERA, $112)

Well, that honeymoon phase sure didn’t last long. After a promising start to his Reds’ career, the old Matt Harvey we’ve become accustomed to has returned.

Harvey is 0-2 with a 7.16 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP and given up five long balls in his last three starts. Harvey and the Reds will try to get back on track when they visit the Pirates tonight. Cincy is currently a +129 road dog.

              • Loaisiga impressive in debut, Yanks top TB
                June 15, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Jonathan Loaisiga pitched three-hit ball over five impressive innings to win his major league debut, and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-0 on Friday night.

Didi Gregorius homered off ex-Yankee Nathan Eovaldi, and Gary Sanchez broke out of a long slump with a three-run double in the eighth. Giancarlo Stanton had a sacrifice fly for New York, which improved the best record in the majors to 45-20.

Jonathan Holder, David Robertson, Dellin Betances and Adam Warren each worked an inning to finish the four-hitter.

Loaisiga (1-0) was called up from Double-A Trenton to fill in for injured starter Masahiro Tanaka. The 23-year-old righty, who walked only four batters in 45 minor league innings this year, struggled a little with his command, issuing four walks while striking out six.

Pitching against his former team, Eovaldi (1-2) allowed only two runs over the first seven innings until the Yankees chased him in the eighth. He was charged with five runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings during his first career outing against New York. He struck out five and walked one.

                TWINS 6, INDIANS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Corey Kluber had a rare rocky performance, lasting just five innings and losing for the first time in seven starts as Kyle Gibson outpitched the Cy Young winner and Brian Dozier hit a two-run homer to lead Minnesota past Cleveland.

Kluber (10-3) allowed a homer on his fourth pitch of the game to Eddie Rosario and was pulled after throwing just 65 pitches by manager Terry Francona. It was the shortest outing this season for the All-Star, who came in 5-0 with a 0.76 ERA against AL Central teams and was riding several other impressive streaks.

Gibson (2-4) limited the Indians to one run and three hits in seven innings and got his first win since his season debut on March 31.

Yan Gomes homered in the ninth and the Indians closed to 6-3 before closer Fernando Rodney struck out Francisco Lindor with one on for his 15th save.

                PIRATES 3, REDS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Chad Kuhl pitched six solid innings to win for the first time in more than a month, and Pittsburgh edged Cincinnati and Matt Harvey.

Kuhl (5-4) gave up two runs, one earned, and six hits while striking out six and walking three. It was his first win since May 6 at Milwaukee, a span of seven starts, though Kuhl allowed no more than three runs in any of his previous four outings.

The Pirates pulled ahead 3-2 in the sixth on consecutive sacrifice flies by Starling Marte and Colin Moran off reliever Michael Lorenzen. The runs were charged to Harvey (1-5), who allowed three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks. The former New York Mets ace is 1-3 with a 5.09 ERA in seven starts since being traded to Cincinnati on May 8 after being designated for assignment.

Felipe Vazquez held on in the ninth for his 13th save in 17 opportunities.

                MARLINS 2, ORIOLES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jose Urena pitched eight innings of three-hit ball, Lewis Brinson tripled twice and Miami beat Baltimore stretch the Orioles' losing streak to a season-high eight games.

In an interleague matchup between two offensively challenged last-place teams, the Marlins scratched out a couple of runs against Kevin Gausman (3-6) for their fourth win in five games.

It's Baltimore's longest skid since a nine-game slide in July 2011. The Orioles have lost 15 of 17 overall and 10 straight at home, scoring only 14 runs.

Urena (2-8) struck out four and walked one in his longest outing of the season. Urena, who started for Miami on opening day, is 2-1 in June after an 0-7 start. Kyle Barraclough worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save.

                BLUE JAYS 6, NATIONALS 5

TORONTO (AP) - Yangervis Solarte homered from both sides of the plate, Devon Travis also connected and Toronto beat Washington for its fifth straight home victory.

Justin Smoak broke a 3-3 tie with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and Solarte, batting left-handed, followed with a two-run shot off right-hander Justin Miller. Solarte was batting right-handed when he homered in Toronto's three-run third, a solo blast off left-hander Gio Gonzalez (6-3).

Solarte is the ninth player in Blue Jays history to homer from both sides of the plate. The last to do it was Justin Smoak against Boston on July 1, 2015. The homers were Solarte's 13th and 14th of the season, extending his team lead.

Seunghwan Oh (2-2) pitched one inning for the win and Ryan Tepera stranded the potential tying run at third base in the ninth to earn his fourth save in seven opportunities.

                PADRES 9, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Hunter Renfroe hit a go-ahead, two-run single in San Diego's five-run seventh inning, Freddy Galvis had a three-run homer and went 5 for 5, and the Padres beat Atlanta.

Freddie Freeman's 15th homer gave Atlanta a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Jose Pirela hit a two-run homer for San Diego in the first.

Clayton Richard (6-6) allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits in six innings. Luis Castillo closed the game with two scoreless innings, and Galvis had a run-scoring single, giving him four RBIs, in the ninth. The five hits were a career high.

Sam Freeman (1-3) gave up three runs in the seventh and took the loss in relief of Brandon McCarthy, who allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Freeman's homer gave him hits in 25 of his last 26 games. He led the NL with his .342 batting average entering the game.

                ASTROS 7, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Evan Gattis hit a go-ahead grand slam, Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa also went deep and Houston beat Kansas City for its ninth consecutive win.

Charlie Morton (8-1) overcame another bout of wildness, at one point walking three straight batters, to last six innings for Houston. He allowed four hits and four walks while striking out nine.

Brad Peacock, Tony Sipp and Collin McHugh each contributed a scoreless inning in relief.

Jakob Junis (5-7) served up all three Houston homers, getting tagged for six runs on seven hits and a walk. It was his fourth straight loss, his last win coming against the New York Yankees on May 18.

All but one of the Astros' wins during their streak has come on the road.

                BREWERS 13, PHILLIES 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Brent Suter drove in two runs and pitched a season-high seven innings, Christian Yelich, Hernan Perez and Jesus Aguilar homered and Milwaukee beat Jake Arrieta and Philadelphia.

Suter (7-4) allowed one run on six hits to win his fifth start in the last six, including a 12-3 victory over the Phillies six days ago. He pushed the Brewers to 43-27 for the best record in the NL.

Milwaukee has scored 40 runs against the Phillies in four games, including 27 in three at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia has 13 in that span.

Arrieta (5-5) came in 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA in five career starts at Miller Park, but the Brewers snapped that streak by reaching him for eight runs - four earned - on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out one.

                ROCKIES 9, RANGERS 5

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Ian Desmond homered twice and Trevor Story had a pair of RBI hits in his first game near home as Colorado overcame a quick five-run deficit to beat Texas.

It was Desmond's first game in Texas since the converted shortstop was an All-Star center fielder in his only season with the Rangers in 2016.

Texas has a seven-game losing streak, its longest of the season. The Rockies had lost five of their previous six games.

Jurickson Profar and Joey Gallo each hit two-run homers in the first when the Rangers jumped out to 5-0 lead against Chad Bettis (5-1), another Texas native.

Desmond homered to lead off a six-run second against Yohander Mendez (0-1), the lefty making his first big league start.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

                      13) After seven years and one ring, Kawhi Leonard wants out of San Antonio; rumor has it he wants to go to the Lakers. Leonard is from Riverside, CA about 50 miles from LA.

San Diego State went 59-12 in Leonard’s two years with the Aztecs, but he was only a 25% shooter behind the arc in college, averaging 10 rebounds, 2 assists a game. Indiana drafted him 15th in 2011, then traded him and two other players to San Antonio for George Hill. Leonard wasn’t considered a star in the making, but not a great day for the Pacers.

I guess my point here is that the Spurs’ staff transformed Leonard from a player who earned $1.7M a year as a rookie, to a guy makes around $20M a year now. We said Leonard shot 25% on arc in college; he is a career 38.6% shooter from the NBA arc, which is a longer shot than the college shot. Leonard worked hard to improve his game, with the help of the Spurs’ coaches.

Not a lot of gratitude here, especially considering he played a whole nine games last year, for his $18,868,625. You wonder why the Spurs have usually had a lot of foreign-born players?

                      12) Kid named Ashton Hagans, considered the top point guard in Class of 2019, has re-classfied to the Class of ’18 and will enroll at Kentucky.

Kentucky’s freshman class that now features four five-star prospects and could also add Reid Travis, a 6-8 graduate transfer from Stanford. But if your PG is a kid who should still be in high school, is that a good thing?

                      11) Duke alum Marvin Bagley III signed a 5-year footwear, apparel endorsement deal with Puma, as part of Puma’s plan to re-launch its basketball footwear business after being out of the game for the last 20 years, when they had Vince Carter as a client.

                      10) Stephen Curry was the 7th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft; Minnesota had the 5th and 6th picks that year, and took Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn. Whoops.

                      9) Basketball prospect Michael Porter Jr played three games at Missouri last year. Three. He had a hip injury and missed virtually the entire season. It was his only season of college basketball.

Despite that, NBA people are talking the kid up as a top 5 pick in the NBA Draft. He was supposed to work out for NBA teams this week but cancelled the workout because of “hip spasms.” Not good.

I wouldn’t draft this kid, its an extreme risk that he would be able to last through an 82-game season. But someone will, and then they’ll justify it with some babble about how talented he is and they’ll hold their breath that he is healthy.

I’m not even mentioning the fact that he was home-schooled in high school, then in his one year of college ball, didn’t seem to get along with his teammates. Is he even coachable? His father was an assistant coach on his college team, and his brother was a teammate.

                      8) The guy who shot 92 at the US Open Thursday shot a 75 Friday, so hopefully that sent him home with a smile on his face.

                      7) In their last 15 series, San Diego Padres are 1-14 in the series openers, then 23-7 in all the other games. One of those stats for which there is no explanation.

                      6) Former major league pitcher Kevin Brown was responsible for two mail thieves being caught this week. After several reports of stolen mail in a north Macon, GA neighborhood, Brown hid in a neighbor’s yard and waited on the thieves to strike again.

From The Telegraph: “A 15-year-old and another man were arrested Wednesday afternoon outside of Brown’s multimillion-dollar home off Rivoli Downs. The mailbox was ajar as the baseball star explained the situation to four Bibb County sheriff’s deputies.”

                      5) White Sox pitching prospect Michael Kopech faced 21 batters in a AAA game Thursday; he walked eight of them, allowing five runs in three IP. He threw 86 pitches, only 35 strikes; he was part of the Chris Sale-to-Boston package, along with Yoan Moncada.

Kopech is 2-5, 5.20 in 13 AAA start this season; it is possible he throws too hard. He has 82 strikeouts in 62.1 IP, but also 42 walks, nine hit batters.

                      4) Miami Marlins averaged 20,395 fans per game last year; they’re averaging 10,283 this year. It helps to draw fans when you don’t give away all your best players (except one).

                      3) Surprising stat: Seattle’s Juan Segura leads the major leagues this year- he has 14 games with 3+ hits. Coming into Friday’s play, no one else had more than 11.

                      2) Back when I was a kid, in the 70’s, baseball’s trading deadline was June 15, which is really, really early in the season. Very good idea making the trade deadline July 31 like it is now.

                      1) There was a secretary who worked for the Philadelphia Eagles for 30 years; she was the head coach’s secretary, but when Chip Kelly was head coach, he fired her in 2013.

This week, the Eagles gave out their Super Bowl rings, and owner Jeffrey Lurie gave one to the former secretary. Each ring has 219 diamonds in it. Pretty nice thing to do.

                      • LEADING OFF: Goldschmidt back in form, Scherzer dominating
                        June 15, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

                        GOLDEN GOLDY

Paul Goldschmidt tries to keep up his torrid pace at the plate when the NL West-leading Diamondbacks host the Mets. Goldschmidt entered this month hitting a paltry .209 after slogging his way through May, when he had only 14 hits in 97 at-bats (.144). The slugger has returned to form in June, batting .442 with six homers, 13 RBIs and 15 runs going into Friday night's game. Overall, he raised his season average nearly 50 points in the first 13 games of the month to .258.

                        MAD MAX

Washington ace Max Scherzer has won the last two NL Cy Young Awards. The right-hander appears well on his way to a third straight - and fourth Cy Young overall - going into his start at Toronto. Scherzer (10-2, 2.00 ERA) leads the majors with 142 strikeouts in 94 2/3 innings, and he's allowed more than five hits in a game only twice in 13 starts this season.

                        KEUCHEL'S STRUGGLES

Houston left-hander Dallas Keuchel (3-8) has had a rough go of things in two June starts, allowing 13 runs over 11 innings as his ERA climbed from 3.65 to 4.45. The 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner will try to turn it around when he starts at Kansas City, which counters with left-hander Danny Duffy (3-6, 5.28).

                        MAD BUMGARNER

San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner takes the mound in Los Angeles against the rival Dodgers. Bumgarner is 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA in two starts this season following a two-month stay on the disabled list. He allowed six hits and four runs over 5 1/3 innings last time out vs. Miami. The left-hander is 15-9 with a 2.53 ERA in 29 career appearances against the Dodgers.

The Philadelphia Phillies enter play on Friday with a 35-31 record, just four games back of the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East. The two teams have taken much different routes to their success, as the Braves are among the better offensive teams in the league, while the Phillies are languishing near the bottom of the batting average rankings, well below the league average of .245, and NL average of .243. Surprisingly, the Phillies are still ranked 22nd in runs scored with 280 through 66 games, or their 4.24 runs per game are not that far off from the league average of 4.33 runs per contest. The Phillies rank a respectable 12th in ERA at 3.76, and eighth overall in the NL. The pitching is what's keeping them around.

The Twins entered play on Friday with an 0-4 mark over their past four road games against a team with a winning overall record, while going 2-8 in the past 10 on the road and 1-4 in the past five on the road vs. RHP. Dodger Blue has been red hot lately, going 4-0 in their past four against NL West opponents, and 7-0 in their past seven against a starter with a WHIP of 1.30 or more. The Dodgers have handled their business against lefties, too, coming out on top in 50 of their past 66.

In the lone late game, the Mets and Diamondbacks tangle in a battle of southpaws. The Mets are 5-2 in their past seven on the road against lefties, but they're 0-5 in the past five against southpaws.
