  • Ballpark Figures - Week 10
    June 4, 2018

    STREAKY TEAMS (ENTERING MONDAY)

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Baltimore 0-7 past seven overall Boston Over 8-1 past nine overall

Chicago Cubs 7-1 past eight overall Cincinnati Over 4-0 past four overall

Miami 1-9 past 10 games overall Colorado Over 5-0 past five overall

N.Y. Mets 3-11 past 14 games overall L.A. Angels Under 5-0 past five overall

Seattle 13-3 over past 16 overall St. Louis Under 10-3-1 past 14 overall

    Pittsburgh Power Outage

The Pittsburgh Pirates have experienced an offensive power outage lately, posting just 71 runs over the past 20 games (3.55 runs per game). As a result, the 'under' is 12-7-1 during the span. The lack of offense has been even more apparent on the road going 5-2 across the past seven outings. The under is an impressive 41-20-3 across the past 64 after allowing five or more runs in their previous outing. Perhaps facing the National League West after an off day will spur on their offense. The over is 6-2 in the past eight for the Bucs against the NL West, while going 5-2 in their past seven following a scheduled day off. The over has also cashed in 38 of the past 55 meetings against the Dodgers in the Steel City.

    To The Max

The Washington Nationals welcome the Tampa Bay Rays to town for interleague play, and Tuesday's battle will feature Nathan Eovaldi against Max Scherzer. Eovaldi made his season debut last time out, spinning six no-hit innings with a walk and four strikeouts in Oakland on May 30. He was making his way back from a pair of elbow surgeries, but certainly showed no ill effects against the A's. The Nats and Scherzer will offer a much bigger test. Scherzer enters 9-1 with a 1.92 ERA and impressive 120 strikeouts over just 79 2/3 innings. Washington is 21-5 over the past 26 when Scherzer works on five days of rest, and they're 44-16 across his past 60 outings overall. The Nats have also posted a 28-9 record over the past 37 with Scherzer on the hill against a team with a losing overall record. On the flip side, the Rays are 0-5 in their past five interleague games and 0-4 in their past four interleague battles against a right-handed starter.

    Looking Ahead

    Monday, June 4

The Tigers and Yankees will battle in a twin bill. Detroit has been no stranger to doubleheaders, as their double dip will be their fifth so far this season. In their most recent doubleheader on May 12, they split with the Mariners, winning Game 1. The Tigers also split with the Pirates on April 25, again winning in Game 1. The same holds true with their doubleheader on April 20 against the Royals, splitting and winning Game 1. They were swept in a double dip on April 1 against the Bucs. There have been 12 doubleheaders overall in the majors this season, with nine resulting in splits.

The Braves and Padres will square off in late-night action. Atlanta has posted a 7-1 record in the past eight road games against a team with a losing record, while going 9-2 in their past 11 overall against teams with a losing mark. The Braves have won 13 of their past 18 overall on the road, while going 8-2 in their past 10 on the road against a left-handed starter. Atlanta has posted a 13-6 record in Julio Teheran's past 19 starts, while going 8-3 in his past 11 road outings against a team with a losing overall mark. San Diego has posted five wins over the past six outings, while going 4-1 in their past five vs. RHP. While the Padres are 4-1 in Clayton Richard's past five working on four days rest, that's about the only trend going in his favor. The Padres are a dismal 5-21 over his past 26 starts against NL East foes, and they're 7-23 across their past 30 opening games of a new series.

    Weather Report

The New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers will be doing battle in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The good news is that precipitation will not be a factor in the make-up game, but winds will be hindering the pitchers for both sides. The wind will be blowing out from home plate to the left-center field power alley anywhere from 16-19 mph.

    Tuesday, June 5

The White Sox and Twins will do battle in a doubleheader on Tuesday. Chicago has won each of their past five opening games of a doubleheader, although they're 1-7 in their past eight against the Twins and 0-4 in their past four at Target Field. However, Minnesota is 3-13 in their past 16 opening games of a double dip and just 4-11 in their past 15 during Game 1 of a new series. Chicago is 1-4 in their past five second games of a twin bill, while the Twins are 5-1 in their past six nightcaps.

The Yankees look to maintain their mastery against AL East foes. They roll out CC Sabathia for the series opener in Toronto, and they're 6-1 in their past seven against division foes. New York is also a solid 12-4 in the past 16 road outings entering Monday's doubleheader, while going 15-6 in Sabathia's past 21 against AL East opponents. However, the Bronx Bombers are a dismal 1-4 in the past five road starts by the hefty lefty. Toronto has won just once over the past nine overall, and they're a dismal 3-15 across the past 18 vs. LHP. They're also 0-5 in their past five at home against southpaws, while going 0-4 in Marco Estrada's past four home outings.

Seattle and Houston will have a battle of left-handed starters when James Paxton and Dallas Keuchel hook up. The Mariners enter the week with a one-game lead in the American League West thanks to a 13-3 record across the past 16 overall. They're also 11-5 over the past 16 on the road, while going 4-1 in the past five against winning teams. Seattle has managed a 4-1 record in Paxton's past five road assignments, while going 7-3 in his past 10 starts overall. The Astros have handled the twig nicely against southpaws, going 4-1 in their past five at home vs. LHP and 26-10 in their past 36 against division foes. While they're 37-16 in Keuchel's past 53 at home, they're just 3-9 in his past 12 on five days of rest and 1-4 in his past five tries against teams with a winning overall mark. Seattle hasn't had a lot of success against Houston, however, going 10-26 in the past 36 meetings overall and 1-4 in the past five trips to H-Town.

    Weather Report

The winds will be howling anywhere from 11-14 mph from home plate to the right-center field power alley for the early-evening battle between the Dodgers and Pirates. In Washington, the solid pitching matchup between Eovaldi and Scherzer might be slightly delayed as weather moves out of the area. There is a 60 percent chance of rain at first pitch, but the chances dwindle to 25 percent by 8pm ET. When the game gets underway the pitching will be put to the test with winds gusting from 11-14 mph out to right field.

In Cincinnati, the Rockies and Reds will face a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms. The precip chances are 30-40 percent from 7-10 pm ET, but the game should be able to get underway at some point. The winds will be blowing from 11-14 mph from home plate to the right-center field power alley. On the other end of Interstate 71, the winds will be blowing in from right field to home plate in Cleveland for the interleague battle between the Brewers and Indiana.

At Fenway Park, the Tigers and Red Sox face a 40 percent chance of rain through the evening, and there isn't many signs of a three-hour window to get the game in. If they are able to play, the winds will be blowing in from 11-14 mph from right field to home plate.

In late-night action, the Diamondbacks and Giants will be battling during gusty conditions alongside the bay. The winds will be blowing from 17-20 mph from home plate to straightaway center field.

      Monday MLB Best Bet
Kansas City Royals vs. L.A. Angels

It's a really light night in MLB as there are just five total games on the schedule today and two of those are part of a double-header in Detroit. After that it's just three late night affairs out on the west coast and it's the only AL game of those three that caught my eye today.

That contest has the Kansas City Royals starting a week-long road trip in L.A to face the Angels, as it's a matchup between two teams going in very different directions this year. Will the rebuilding, underdog Royals show some fight tonight and get a win?

Kansas City (+160) vs L.A. Angels (-170); Total set at 8.5

Despite being stuck in a miserable “tanking” season at 21-38 SU, the Kansas City Royals are actually a better team on the road than they are at home. KC enters this series with a 11-17 SU record away from home (compared to 10-21 SU at home) and would probably like at least a little bit of redemption at some point over the next few days since they allowed the Angels to sweep the Royals back in KC in mid-April.

That three game set saw the Angels score at least 5 runs in all three games as they outscored KC 17-8 overall. Piling up losses like that have been the norm for the Royals this year, but they do come into tonight's game having played .500 baseball over their last 10 outings and are sending their “ace” Danny Duffy to the hill tonight.

However, even with all that said, looking at the juicy odds on an underdog play with KC is not something I'm looking to do tonight. Duffy may be listed as the #1 starter on the Royals depth chart, but he's been anything but this year. Duffy has a 2-6 SU record (KC is 3-9 SU in his 12 total starts), allows 6.6 runs per game on average thanks to allowing 71 hits in nearly 65 IP.

Those numbers have come down dramatically as well over his last two outings which have been solid, but I'm not about to trust a guy who's been lit up like a gas can most of the year to have his third straight quality start in a row.

Even at +160 it's just not really worth the risk. What I do trust though is Duffy more than likely reverting back to his rough form sooner than later and that includes giving up runs.

L.A's offense needs a bit of a kickstart after five consecutive 'unders' for the team with L.A scoring more than 3 runs just once in that span. When you aren't scoring runs the losses are likely to follow, and L.A's 2-3 SU record during those five games does hint at that.

They didn't do nearly enough damage against an average Texas rotation over the weekend, and while the Angels numbers against left-handed pitching are among the worst in all of baseball – and part of the reason why VegasInsider.com currently shows 80%+ action on the 'under' tonight – facing a struggling southpaw like Duffy tonight who has pitched over the heart of the plate for the bulk of the season should help those numbers against lefties head north for L.A tonight.

That's why I'm backing the high side of this total tonight as I do believe L.A will find a way to knock Duffy around the yard, because really, the Angels numbers against southpaws shouldn't be nearly as bad as they are with all the great right-handed bats they've got. L.A is also 4-1 O/U in their last five against very bad teams (sub .400 win percentage), and scoring at least five runs in all three of the earlier meetings this year give me no concerns about L.A's ability to knock around the Royals bullpen either.

Kansas City is going to have to find ways to score as well to cash this ticket, and although Angels starter Nick Tropeano held them down to the tune of a 7-1 loss back in April, things haven't been as smooth for Tropeano lately. He's struggled to keep the ball in the yard with 5 HR's allowed over his last three starts, and the 4 runs per game opponents have scored on him this year is a number I expect Kansas City to reach this evening.

So, with the bulk of the action already coming on the low side of this number, and the price on 'over' 8.5 runs moving from plus-money overnight to the -125 and higher range now, it's hard not to take notice of that move and some big money evidently expecting this game to be higher scoring like I do. This game has a 6-4 final score written all over it, and with KC having a 5-2-2 O/U run going in their last nine games played in L.A, and a 4-0-1 O/U mark when Duffy gets five full days off, I'm betting we reach that number rather early.

      Best Bet: Over 8.5 runs

      • D-backs visit Giants
        June 4, 2018

The tightly bunched NL West race has the top four teams separated by just 2.5 games heading into Monday’s action. Two of those teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants, begin a three-game series on ESPN.

Both teams come in off sweeps, as the Diamondbacks swept the Marlins, while the Giants swept the Phillies. The probable pitching matchup for Monday has Zack Godley going against Derek Holland. Let’s look at the contest and MLB picks.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Francisco Giants
Date and Time: Monday, June 4, 2018, 10:10 p.m. ET
Location: AT&T Park, San Francisco, CA
        MLB Odds Giants -109, O/U 7.5
Probable Pitchers: Zack Godley vs. Derek Holland
        TV Coverage: ESPN

The Giants consider themselves contenders in the NL West, as they are just 2.5 games behind Arizona. San Francisco is getting a major boost this week with the return of Madison Bumgarner to the rotation on Tuesday. The Giants will need solid pitching to contain an Arizona offense that got going in their recent homestand. David Peralta has homered in each of the last three games for the Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks have not been as good on the road, as they have been at home. Arizona is 12-14 on the road, with 15 games going over and 11 going under. They are scoring almost four runs per game and giving up about 3.3 per contest.

The Giants have been far better at home than on the road this season, as they are 17-10 at home and 12-20 on the road. San Francisco has gone over the total 15 times at home, under 10 times, with two pushes. They are scoring 4.1 runs per game and giving up 4.4 per contest.

        Starting Pitchers

The Giants are sending Godley to the mound on Monday. He is 5-4 with a 4.38 ERA. He picked up his first win since late April last time out as he allowed just two runs in six innings against Cincinnati. His best start of the season was against the Giants in April when he went seven innings, allowing no runs. Even with that good outing, Godley is still just 2-1 with a 4.67 ERA in his career against the Giants. The problem for Godley this season has been control. He has given up 31 walks, second-most in the National League. Godley will need to pitch carefully to Buster Posey who is 3-for-5 in his career against him.

Holland is 3-6 on the season with a 4.94 ERA. He pitched well in the month of May, winning three of his six starts and lowering his ERA by almost a full run. Holland went against Godley earlier this season and allowed only two runs, but came out on the short end, as the Giants got nothing against Godley.

        Key Stats

The Diamondbacks are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings against the Giants. The Diamondbacks are 27-12 in their last 39 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Diamondbacks are 13-6 in their last 19 series openers. The Diamondbacks are 1-9 in their last 10 road games.

The Giants are 4-0 in their last 4 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Giants are 1-4 in their last 5 series openers.

Looking at the total, the Over is 6-0-1 in the Diamondbacks last 7 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Under is 5-2 in the Diamondbacks last 7 road games. The Over is 4-1 in Godley’s last 5 road starts. The Under is 3-1-1 in the Giants last 5 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 4-1 in Holland’s last 5 starts overall. The Under is 20-8-1 in the last 29 meetings in San Francisco.

        Diamondbacks vs. Giants Picks

I am a little surprised the total on this one is listed at 7.5. Neither Godley nor Holland has been anything special this year and despite what happened when they faced each other earlier this season; this has the looks of a matchup where each starter could struggle. I will go over the total on Monday night.

Diamondbacks vs. Giants Pick: Over the total
Diamondbacks vs. Giants Score Prediction: Giants 6, Diamondbacks 4

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

              13) Crossed paths last week with a group of four families and their 8-10 year old kids who were visiting from California, and were off to a trip to Cooperstown later that day.

I always wonder when people come so far to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame, what they think of it once their trip is over. Cooperstown is in the middle of nowhere, 72 miles from Albany- if you like trees and lakes, you’ll enjoy the drive there. Very rural.

Baseball Hall of Fame itself is tremendous, and Sal’s Pizza across the street is very good.

              12) Legalized sports betting starts today in Delaware; West Virginia hopes to have sports betting up and running by the start of football season. New Jersey is supposed to start sometime this month. New York? Who the bleep knows.

              11) Danny Hurley is the new basketball coach at UConn; he threw out the first ball at the Mets’ game Sunday. This will take some getting used to.

How good a job is UConn? Not a lot of great players in-state, and the fanbase was spoiled by Jim Calhoun, not to mention how often the women’s team wins.

              10) Why does the baseball Wild Card exist? The ’93 San Francisco Giants went 103-59, and didn’t make the playoffs— how about that?

Wild Cards started in baseball in ’95, but oddly, the Giants had losing seasons is 1994-96, after winning 103 games in ’93. They’ve made up for all that this decade.

              9) Oakland A’s drafted Oklahoma CF Skyler Murray with the #9 pick in the baseball draft; the thing here is, Murray is also penciled in to be the Sooners’ QB this fall. He is 5-10, very short for a potential NFL QB, but Brees, Tarkenton, Jurgensen, Russell Wilson are all under 6-feet tall.

By way of information, the No. 9 pick in last year’s baseball draft got a $4M signing bonus.

We’ll see how that works out, but would he leave Oklahoma now for $4-5M?

              8) Washington Nationals lost P Jeremy Hellickson (hamstring) after four pitches Sunday; he had been doing great work for Washington. Hamsrings generally take a while to heal.

              7) On May 1, Colorado Rockies were 30-1 to win the World Series; on June 1, they were 22-1.

              6) Part of the reason why? Arizona Diamondbacks hit .193 as a team in May.

              5) Have you seen David Letterman lately? He has this big, bushy white beard that makes him look like Rutherford B Hayes. First time I saw him with the beard, I didn’t recognize him.

              4) Philadelphia Eagles went for it on 4th down 29 times last year, most in the NFL.

              3) Tampa Bay’s Nate Snell tied an American League record Sunday when he struck out the first seven Mariners he faced in Seattle.

              2) ESPN wants to televise New York-Toronto game on Sunday Night Baseball July 8, but New York has a doubleheader in Baltimore the next day- they want Sunday’s game to be a day game.

The two sides, MLB and the union are negotiating to reach a compromise, but if one isn’t found, New York might boycott dealing with ESPN personnel.

Dodgers-Angels, Braves-Brewers or Cardinals-Giants would be alternative games to show.

              1) Baseball draft is weird, since it falls during the college baseball national tournament. How does it affect guys who are still playing? Lot of money on the line for these high draft picks, and the rookie leagues start on June 15th.

              • Tuesday, June 5

                        • LEADING OFF: Bumgarner makes season debut, are Phils shifty?
                          June 5, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                          WELCOME BACK

Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner makes his season debut, more than two months after a line drive broke the pinkie on his pitching hand in a spring training game. The ace rejoins a San Francisco team that has hovered around .500, but has won four in a row and is right in the middle of an NL West race where no one has seized control. Bumgarner struck out 15 in 8 1/3 innings of two minor league outings. Manager Bruce Bochy says the 2014 World Series MVP can throw ''90 or so'' pitches for this home start against the division-leading Diamondbacks.

                          WHO'S WHERE?

We'll see if Jake Arrieta's critical comments about Philadelphia's defensive positioning have any effect. The star pitcher called his team ''the worst in the league with shifts'' after Sunday's loss at San Francisco. Now 2-5 on a 10-game road trip, the Phillies open a series at Wrigley Field against the Cubs.

                          HITLESS WONDER

Rays right-hander Nathan Eovaldi tries to duplicate what he did last week in his season debut. Pitching in the big leagues for the first time since recovering from his second Tommy John surgery, Eovaldi threw six no-hit innings against the A's before being pulled. He starts in Washington against two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, who's 9-1 and leads the majors with 120 strikeouts.

                          HE MAY CONTINUE

Mariners lefty James Paxton was 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA in May, including a no-hitter at Toronto. He makes his first start in June, facing Astros lefty Dallas Keuchel (3-7, 3.65) at Minute Maid Park.

                          ON DECK

All-Star catcher Yadier Molina is expected to return to the lineup when St. Louis hosts Miami. He's been out since being hit in the groin by a foul tip on May 5, an injury that required surgery.

                          SMOOTH

Cleveland ace Corey Kluber (8-2, 2.02 ERA) has opened the season with 12 consecutive quality starts, the longest such streak for an Indians pitcher in 100 years. He'll try to extend the string at home against Milwaukee. Manager Terry Francona said the team expects to activate outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall for the game - he's been out since April 8 because of a strained right calf.

                          START TIME

Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright makes his first start of the season, facing the Tigers at Fenway Park. He's pitched six times in relief, compiling a 2.25 ERA in 16 innings. Boston manager Alex Cora will push back the rest of its rotation by a day for extra rest.

                          SOUND FAMILIAR?

Mets third baseman Todd Frazier is expected to come off the disabled list to face Baltimore, which has lost seven straight. He's has been out since early May with a hamstring injury. The Mets have since hired Colin Cosell - grandson of famed sportscaster Howard Cosell - as one of their two new PA announcers at Citi Field. The late Cosell was known for his boxing call of ''Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!'' Colin plans to honor his grandpop by pronouncing Todd Frazier's last name exactly the same punched-up way - with Todd's OK.

                          • Judge sets doubleheader K record
                            June 4, 2018

DETROIT (AP) Yankees sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton left a doubleheader split in sour moods Monday night.

Judge became the first player ever to record eight strikeouts in a doubleheader, including five punchouts in the nightcap, and Giancarlo Stanton was angry after being hit by another pitch from Tigers starter Mike Fiers.

Leonys Martin had two hits and scored twice as Detroit won the second game 4-2. New York took the opener 7-4 behind Luis Severino's eight strong innings and a six-run fourth inning.

Judge struck out eight times in nine at-bats, the most in a doubleheader since strikeouts for hitters were first recorded in 1910 for the NL and 1913 in the AL, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Judge struck out in each of his five at-bats in the late game, including with a runner aboard in the bottom of the ninth.

The five strikeouts were a career high for Judge, who led the majors with 208 strikeouts while winning AL Rookie of the Year last season.

''That's not a rough day, that's a terrible day,'' Judge said. ''But the beauty of baseball is that I get to wake up to fresh, new at-bats tomorrow.''

In the third inning of the second game, Fiers hit Stanton on the left forearm, leading to a brief verbal exchange between the pitcher and slugger. In September 2014, Fiers was pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers when he hit Stanton in the face, causing serious injuries.

''He wasn't trying to hit me, but still, with the history, don't hit me,'' Stanton said Monday. ''That doesn't eliminate pitching in - this is the major leagues - but either get it over the plate or make sure it doesn't hit me.''

Stanton hit a 456-foot homer in the sixth, then pointed at Fiers as he crossed the plate.

''I understand the history, but I thought the way he handled it today was kind of childish,'' Fiers said. ''Anyone who watches this game knows I wasn't throwing at him.''

The doubleheader made up rainouts from April 14 and 15. Both teams wore No. 42 for the second game because they were making up their postponed Jackie Robinson Day showdown.

Fiers (5-3) got the win in the nightcap, allowing two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Three relievers finished, with Shane Greene striking out three in the ninth for his 15th save. Detroit's pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts in the game.

''That was a great job by our pitching staff,'' Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. ''Fiers gave us a chance to win the game, and our bullpen finished it off.''

Domingo German (0-4) allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings for New York.

Martin doubled and scored on Ronny Rodriguez's sacrifice fly in the second for Rodriguez's first major league RBI, and Brett Gardner tied it with an RBI triple in the third.

Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez hit back-to-back doubles in the seventh to give Detroit a 4-2 lead. The Tigers have hit a double in 52 consecutive games, their third-longest such streak since 1908.

Severino (9-1) struck out 10 to improve to 7-0 in his last 10 starts. He allowed two runs - one earned - and four hits while walking none.

Austin Romine hit a three-run homer, and Torres and Greg Bird each homered for the AL East-leading Yankees, who briefly moved 21 games over .500 for just the second time since ending the 2012 season at 95-67; the Yankees were 91-70 last year before losing their regular-season finale.

Drew VerHagen (0-2) allowed seven runs, seven hits - including three homers - and two walks in 3 2/3 innings.

Torres became the first Yankees player under 22 to hit 10 home runs in a season since Mickey Mantle from 1951-53.

Cabrera hit an RBI double in the first, but Torres tied it in the third when he became the fifth New York player to reach double digits in home runs this season; Candelario leads the Tigers with nine.

Sandy Baez, a 24-year-old right-hander making his major league debut for the Tigers as their 26th man, pitched 4 1/3 hitless innings of relief.

Baez hit his first batter, Bird, then struck out Stanton.

''I'm going to keep that ball wherever I go,'' said Baez, optioned to Double-A Erie after the second game.

                            BIG MOMENT

The Tigers' front office was probably not focused on Fiers' first pitch of the nightcap. Twenty-two seconds later, they selected Auburn pitcher Casey Mize with the first pick in the Major League Baseball draft.

                            FLIGHT DELAYS

The Yankees were delayed briefly in Baltimore after a radar problem on their charter and arrived in Detroit at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. On May 17, the Yankees were forced to spend a night in Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C., after the plane had mechanical problems in bad weather. New York had another long delay at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on May 24.

                            SCHEDULING

Yankees manager Aaron Boone is hoping for a schedule adjustment July 8-9. New York is slated to play in Toronto at 8:05 p.m. on July 8, and last Thursday's rainout at Baltimore was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader starting at 4:05 p.m. on July 9.

''Hopefully it is something that gets worked out,'' Boone said. ''But I also know it's way out of my hands and way out of my control.''

Commissioner Rob Manfred, speaking at the baseball draft in Secaucus, New Jersey, sounded open to a change that would address the Yankees' concerns about such a quick turnaround after traveling overnight from one city to another.

''It's resolvable in a number of ways. We've got a little time,'' Manfred said. ''Just in terms of the timing, it does create a difficult situation and we're hopeful that we can find a way to work through that.''

                            TRAINER'S ROOM

Yankees: Frazier was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to serve as New York's 26th player in the doubleheader. He started both games in left field before being returned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. ... The Yankees activated RHP Adam Warren from the 10-day DL between games and optioned RHP Tommy Kahnle to Triple-A.

Tigers: C James McCann sat out the first game after leaving Sunday's game with an intercostal strain, but played in the nightcap.

                            UP NEXT

Yankees: New York plays in Toronto on Tuesday, when CC Sabathia (2-1, 3.73 ERA) pitches the opener of a two-game series against Blue Jays RHP Marco Estrada (2-6, 5.68).

Tigers: Artie Lewicki (0-0, 3.60) will make his first major league start Tuesday as the Tigers visit Fenway Park for a three-game series. Steven Wright (1-0, 2.25) starts for Boston.

MLB - Washington Nationals Unders (0-9 O/U last nine games)

The Washington Nationals return home on Tuesday for the week as they welcome the Tampa Bay Rays for a brief two-game set before hosting the Giants over the weekend. Two off days within the same week adds an interesting dynamic to handicapping the Nationals this week, especially with that first game against the Rays on Tuesday night being the first one back at home after a long 10 game road trip for the Nats.

Yet, what's more important here is the fact that Washington has seen each of their last nine games cash 'under' tickets for bettors as their pitching staff is really finding it's form in being dominant, and the Nationals offense is finding it hard to click on all cylinders as well. Starter Max Scherzer gets the nod for Washington on Tuesday, and it was his start two starts ago that produced the last 'over' these Nationals had. With him on the mound a lower total is going to be posted, especially when it's an AL team losing a bat by playing in a NL park. How long can we see these 'unders' continue to cash in Nationals games?

                              Who's Not?

Jose Urena and the Miami Marlins Straight Up – (0-6 SU last six, 1-9 SU last 10, winless this year in Urena's 12 starts)

Miami enters the week on a 1-9 SU run and it might not get any easier with a three-game set in St Louis starting on Tuesday night. Everyone knew this Marlins team was going to be bad this year, and while fading them every night out there through 162 games may likely turn a profit by year's end, the price to do so is only going to get steeper and steeper. Remember, even the worst teams in MLB win about 40% of the time each year, so it's important to pick your spots.

A good spot to fade Miami this year has been when #1 starter Jose Urena has been on the hill, that's for sure. Not all the losses can be pinned on Urena – he's actually been quite good at times – but Miami is 0-12 SU when he gets the nod and he'll be starting the series opener with the Cardinals on Tuesday. I'd have to say, Urena is too talented of a guy to be stuck in a losing streak like this and fading Miami in Urena starts is a trend that is probably close to the end of running its course. But if you've been lucky enough to ride that wave for some time now, I say keep on riding it until it costs you. Then probably go back to fading the Marlins 4-5 times per week if you deem the price to be right, because 100+ losses for the Marlins is coming this year.
