NEW YORK (AP) Justin Verlander tamed the Yankees again, slowing down the highest-scoring team in the majors and pitching the Houston Astros past New York 5-1 Monday.

Verlander exited in the seventh inning with a major league-best 1.11 ERA. J.D. Davis hit an early three-run homer and Jose Altuve had a solo drive, helping Houston win for the sixth time in eight games.

Davis hit his first homer of the season, connecting in the second off Domingo German (0-3).

Closer Ken Giles, tagged Sunday as the Astros blew a five-run lead in the ninth at Cleveland, pitched the final inning and worked around a leadoff single.

Facing the only club in baseball that hasn't been shut out this season, Verlander (7-2) blanked the Yankees until Greg Bird hit a leadoff home run in the seventh.

As he left, Verlander took off his cap and waved it toward a solid contingent of Astros fans wearing bright orange behind the dugout.

    NATIONALS 6, ORIOLES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Anthony Rendon hit a three-run homer to back a sharp pitching performance by Gio Gonzalez, and surging Washington beat Baltimore.

Gonzalez (6-2) allowed six hits over 7 2/3 innings to end a six-game losing streak against Baltimore. The left-hander won his first start against the Orioles in 2009 before coming up empty in his next nine outings.

Shawn Kelley got four outs to complete the fifth shutout against the Orioles this season.

Matt Adams and Michael Taylor both had two hits and an RBI for the Nationals, who have won four straight and 13 of 18.

Though NL home run leader Bryce Harper went hitless, his leaping catch against the right-field wall in the fifth inning robbed Andrew Susac of a potential extra-base hit.

Making his ninth start with Baltimore since signing as a free agent in March, Alex Cobb (1-7) was undone by a horrific, 42-pitch third inning that featured Rendon's sixth home run.

    INDIANS 9, WHITE SOX 6

CLEVELAND (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion homered and had four RBIs, and Cleveland took advantage of Chicago's leaky defense to score five times in the fifth inning.

Encarnacion tied the game in the fifth with a three-run bloop double. Yonder Alonso's double drove in the go-ahead run later in the inning and Encarnacion hit a leadoff homer in the seventh.

Cleveland trailed 5-2 going into the fifth, but errors by catcher Alfredo Gonzalez, shortstop Tim Anderson and second baseman Yoan Moncada made three of the runs unearned.

Adam Plutko (3-0) allowed five runs in five innings and has won all three of his starts this season. Tyler Olson, Evan Marshall and Neil Ramirez combined to pitch three shutout innings. Ben Taylor allowed a run in the ninth.

Chris Volstad (0-3) gave up Encarnacion's double, the only batter he faced.

    MARINERS 2, RANGERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Marco Gonzales pitched into the seventh inning and did not allow an earned run for a third consecutive start, helping Seattle top Texas.

Seattle won for the ninth time in 10 games and reached 13 games above .500 for the first time since late in the 2014 season.

Seattle has 16 one-run wins, best in the majors.

Gonzales (5-3) lasted 6 2/3 innings and has not allowed an earned run since May 12 when he gave up four runs in a loss to Detroit.

James Pazos got the final out of the seventh, before letting the duo of Alex Colome and Edwin Diaz work together for the first time. Colome, an All-Star closer acquired from Tampa Bay late last week, struck out a pair sandwiched around a two-out hit to finish the eighth inning, and Diaz pitched the ninth for his 19th save.

    BRAVES 4, METS 3, 1st game

ATLANTA (AP) - Charlie Culberson's pinch-hit, two-run homer off Seth Lugo in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Braves a victory in the first game of a doubleheader.

Lugo (1-1) gave up Nick Markakis' sacrifice fly in the eighth and walked Johan Camargo to begin the ninth before Culberson took him deep.

Devin Mesoraco gave the Mets a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth with a solo homer off Shane Carle (3-1), but Lugo's performance wiped out seven strong innings from Jacob deGrom as the Mets lost their fourth straight.

DeGrom pitched six scoreless innings before allowing Tyler Flowers' homer to make it 2-1 in the seventh. He allowed five hits and three walks and struck out eight, lowering his NL-leading ERA to 1.52. DeGrom has given up just two runs over his past 40 1/3 innings, a span of seven starts in which he has a 0.45 ERA.

    BREWERS 8, CARDINALS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jonathan Villar and Christian Yelich homered, while Ryan Braun had three hits to lead Milwaukee.

Milwaukee starter Brent Suter (5-3) allowed three runs in five innings, but hit a two-run double in the fourth that gave Milwaukee a 4-0 lead. Milwaukee won for the 10th time in 12 games.

St. Louis starter Luke Weaver (3-5) lost his third consecutive start, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in four innings.

    CUBS 7, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Mike Montgomery pitched two-hit ball into the sixth inning, Anthony Rizzo went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, and the sleep-deprived Cubs beat slumping Pittsburgh.

Montgomery (1-1), starting for the first time this season in place of injured Yu Darvish, retired the first 13 batters before giving up a sharp single to Corey Dickerson with one out in the fifth. He struck out five and needed just 76 pitches to get through 5 2/3 innings. Montgomery struck out five without allowing a walk.

Rizzo hit his seventh home run in the second off Chad Kuhl (4-3) to give the Cubs an early lead. Addison Russell gave Chicago breathing room in the seventh with the second pinch-hit home run of his career, a shot to the bleachers in left off reliever Steven Brault that stayed just inside the foul pole.

The Cubs arrived in Pittsburgh at 4 a.m. local time following a victory over San Francisco in Chicago on Sunday night. Manager Joe Maddon wondered openly before the game why the start time wasn't pushed until later in the day, but the well-rested Montgomery, who has worked exclusively in the bullpen this season, was more than ready to go.

RED SOX 8, BLUE JAYS 3

BOSTON (AP) - Andrew Benintendi hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run fourth inning, J.D. Martinez added a solo homer and Boston coasted.

Benintendi also had a triple and single, and Jackie Bradley Jr. added an RBI double, scored twice and made a spectacular catch in center field. Boston won for the seventh time in nine games.

It was the Blue Jays' 11th loss in 15 games, dropping them to 2-5 against the Red Sox this season. Teoscar Hernandez had an RBI triple and double for Toronto.

David Price (5-4) labored through five innings, allowing two runs and four hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Aaron Sanchez (2-5) was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in five innings, falling to 0-3 in his past five starts with a 5.96 ERA.

    DIAMONDBACKS 12, REDS 5

PHOENIX (AP) - Nick Ahmed, Chris Owings and John Ryan Murphy each homered as Arizona's offense - slumbering for nearly all of May - came alive for a victory over the Cincinnati Reds, just the Diamondbacks' third win in their past 18 games.

Ahmed and Owings each had a three-run home run in the opener of a six-game homestand after Arizona staggered back from a 1-8 road trip. Murphy added a solo shot.

Ahmed and Murphy homered off Homer Bailey (1-7), who allowed eight runs, six earned, on six hits in four innings. The Reds are 1-11 in games Bailey has started.

Matt Koch (3-3) went five innings, giving up five runs on 11 hits for Arizona. Eugenio Suarez had four hits for the Reds, including an RBI double.

    TIGERS 9, ANGELS 3

DETROIT (AP) - James McCann hit a grand slam in the third inning and Detroit routed Los Angeles.

Matthew Boyd (3-4) allowed two hits in five-plus innings for the Tigers. His first scoreless outing of the season came on a hot day in which Detroit outfielder Niko Goodrum had to leave the game because of heat exhaustion. The temperature was around 90 degrees when Goodrum was removed for a defensive replacement in the fourth.

Leonys Martin also homered for the Tigers, and Mike Trout went deep in the ninth for the Angels, his 18th home run of the season.

Tyler Skaggs (3-4) allowed five runs and six hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out five.

    RAYS 1, ATHLETICS 0, 13 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Mallex Smith hit an RBI single with two outs in the 13th inning, Jonny Venters got his first save in seven years to cap a seven-hit shutout and Tampa Bay outlasted Oakland.

Chris Archer went six innings as the first of six pitchers for the Rays in their first shutout of the season. Ryne Stanek (1-0) retired five batters to win and Venters struck out Matt Olson with the tying run on base for his first save since 2011. Venters missed five seasons due to four major elbow surgeries, including three Tommy John operations, before returning to the big leagues this year.

The Rays have won four of five.

Chris Hatcher (3-2) retired the first two Tampa Bay hitters in the 13th before Johnny Field reached on an infield single to shortstop. Jesus Sucre followed with a single to move Fields to second before Smith blooped a 2-0 pitch to right-center.

    MARLINS 7, PADRES 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Caleb Smith was brilliant in dominating a matchup of rookie left-handers, Yadiel Rivera's two-run single capped Miami's four-run first inning, and Cameron Maybin had three hits and two RBIs against his old team to lead the Marlins to a victory against San Diego.

Smith (4-5) allowed one run and four hits in seven-plus innings, struck out four to run his MLB rookie lead to 69, and walked only one in the matchup of last-place teams.

His only big mistake Monday was allowing rookie Franmil Reyes' homer to left leading off the second inning, his second. He yielded a single to pinch-hitter Travis Jankowski leading off the eighth and made way for Drew Steckenrider.

San Diego's Eric Lauer (1-3) lasted 2 1-3 innings, allowing five runs and seven hits while striking out three and walking two. It was the third time in seven starts he went three or fewer innings.

    ROCKIES 6, GIANTS 5, 10 INNINGS

DENVER (AP) - Chris Iannetta drove in the winning run with a single in the 10th inning and Colorado beat San Francisco in a game delayed 55 minutes by rain.

It was Iannetta's eighth career walk-off RBI and first since May 11, 2016, with Seattle.

Bryan Shaw (2-3) wiggled out of a jam in the 10th. Hunter Strickland (2-2) took the loss.

The Rockies tied it in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Ian Desmond.

Gorkys Hernandez homered and Evan Longoria drove in three runs with two doubles for a Giants team that's dropped 11 of 12 at Coors Field.

    DODGERS 5, PHILLIES 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Yasmani Grandal singled home the go-ahead run and the Dodgers scored three times in the eighth inning to rally past Philadelphia, spoiling Phillies manager Gabe Kapler's return to Los Angeles.

The Dodgers handed the Phillies their fourth straight loss at Chavez Ravine dating to last season, when Kapler served as director of player development before being lured East for his first big league managerial job. He had been a candidate for the Dodgers' opening before Dave Roberts was hired.

Phillies starter Vince Velasquez took a no-hitter into the sixth before the Dodgers scored twice to trail 4-2.

Yimi Garcia (1-1) tossed two scoreless innings and Kenley Jansen earned his 12th save. The Dodgers have won nine of 11 since May 17.

Adam Morgan (0-1) took the loss. Cesar Hernandez hit a three-run homer for the Phillies.

    TWINS 8, ROYALS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Miguel Sano belted a two-run homer, Eddie Rosario hit a three-run double and Minnesota snapped a four-game skid with a victory over Kansas City.

Lance Lynn (3-4) pitched six effective innings to win his second consecutive start.

Sano extended his hitting streak against the Royals to 15 games. He is batting .373 with six home runs and 26 RBIs in those 15 games.

Mitch Garver added a two-run double in the ninth.

Fernando Rodney got four outs for his 11th save in 14 chances. He gave up a ninth-inning homer to Jorge Soler.

Jon Jay had four hits for the Royals, including three doubles. Kansas City went 4 for 19 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 overall.

Jakob Junis (5-4) permitted three runs in six innings.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

        13) What genius decided the Cubs had to play a day game in Pittsburgh Monday after they played a home game on ESPN Sunday night? That makes no sense.

If the Pirates have to play a Memorial Day afternoon home game, at least make it a 4:00 first pitch. Or don’t schedule the Cubs to play at night on Sunday.

        12) Nightcap of the Mets-Braves day/night twinbill started at 10:07 pm, after a 3-hour rain delay. With Tuesday’s weather forecast not looking so good, they tried like hell to get both games in Monday,

        11) Pablo Sandoval played second base Sunday night, third time in 1,117 major league games he played there, first time he started a game at second.

        10) Weird baseball injury late Monday night; Rhys Hoskins is batting in 9th inning with a 1-2 count; he swings and misses, but ball hits him on arm, bounces up and hits him in the face.

Umpires ruled it a foul ball, which was wrong; game should’ve ended there. Hoskins has to leave the game because he got drilled in the face with a deflected pitch, Pedro Florimon wound up striking out in his place as the Dodgers rallied late for a 5-4 win.

        9) In his last seven starts, Jacob deGrom has allowed two runs in 43.1 IP, but has only two wins in those seven games. Mets scored total of nine runs in his last four starts.

        8) Mets’ relief pitchers have already had more at-bats this season than all of last season. They’ve had 20 this year on May 28- they had 18 in all of 2017.

        7) Phillies will face Clayton Kershaw Thursday, as he comes off the disabled list, and might very well face Madison Bumgarner Friday, as he comes off the DL. Not the best luck there.

        6) ESPN’s Steve Levy and Barry Melrose had a live shot from the Stanley Cup finals at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with…….comedian Carrot Top.

        5) Not sure of the exact crowd, but looked like they had over 10,000 fans in Washington to watch the hockey game on the big screen in the Capitals’ arena. They went home unhappy as the Golden Knights won 6-4.

        4) San Diego Padres are 7-3 this season when Tyson Ross starts, 15-30 when anyone else starts.

        3) Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas is running a football pool again this fall; $1,000 per entry, you pick seven games a week, but you can use NFL or college games. The Westgate pool is five games per week, but only NFL games and it is $1,500 an entry.

        2) Warriors 101, Rockets 92— Houston got outscored 122-63 combined in the second half of Games 6-7.

        1) Happy 80th birthday to the great Jerry West, who still works as a consultant for the Clippers.

        • LEADING OFF: Rizzo catches Pirates' ire, Stanton returns
          May 28, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

          IRATE WITH RIZZO

The Pirates are upset with Anthony Rizzo after the Cubs star slid hard into catcher Elias Diaz while being forced out at home Monday afternoon, and tensions could spill over as the teams resume their series. Rizzo claimed he ''wasn't trying to hurt anyone'' when he went leg-first into Diaz, who had already touched home plate for the force out and was a full step in front of the base. Diaz remained in the game after being tended to by trainers, but Rizzo gave him a real scare. ''When I saw the replay, I was like `Man, this guy could have ended my career right here,''' Diaz said. ''I understand they called it a legal slide, but out of what I've been trained and what I've been told, that was not a legal slide.'' Diaz said Rizzo apologized before his at-bat in the ninth inning.

          GAME 7 REMATCH

Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is hoping a day off Monday will get him going. Last year's NL MVP struck out in all four at-bats Sunday at home against the Los Angeles Angels. CC Sabathia (2-1, 3.55 ERA) starts for New York against Charlie Morton (7-0, 2.04) and the Astros. Morton struck out 10 in a win over the Yankees on April 30. He also threw five shutout innings to beat Sabathia in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series last October.

          ENCORE!

Baltimore right-hander Dylan Bundy (3-6, 4.45 ERA) tries to follow up his 14-strikeout complete game against the White Sox last week when he pitches against Bryce Harper and the surging Nationals, who have won four straight and 13 of 18. Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 2.13), who pitched for the Orioles last summer, gets the ball for Washington in an interleague matchup between neighboring rivals.

          SNAKES AWAKE

Arizona has found just the thing to jolt its slumbering offense - Cincinnati pitching. The Diamondbacks broke out with three homers in a 12-5 win over the Reds on Monday, a promising sign following a 1-8 road trip. Arizona had scored two or fewer runs in six of its previous seven games before homers from Nick Ahmed, Chris Owings and John Ryan Murphy fueled a big return home. Arizona's Zack Godley (4-4, 4.53) opposes Reds righty Luis Castillo (4-4, 5.34) in the series' second game.

          PUT ME DOWN, COACH

With Jesus Aguilar hitting so well, Ryan Braun asked manager Craig Counsell on Sunday to be dropped lower in Milwaukee's batting order, a move that worked out just fine in an 8-3 win over St. Louis on Monday. Braun didn't want Counsell to be concerned about offending him and figured a lineup shuffle might be the right move for the NL Central-leading Brewers. Milwaukee goes for a fifth straight victory when Zach Davies (2-4, 4.74) takes on St. Louis' Michael Wacha (5-1, 2.88).

            Show Me Unders

The Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals have been ticking off plenty of unders, as the two Major League Baseball teams from the Show Me State have been favorites of total bettors at the window lately. The lowly Royals entered play on Monday evening on a 5-1-1 'under' streak across their past seven outings, and the under is 30-20-3 in their 53 games overall this season. They have had trouble generating offense at home, and they're 14-6-1 in their past 21 at Kauffman Stadium. The under is also 15-6-1 in their past 22 games inside the American Central Division. East acros Interstate 70, the Cardinals have also had plenty of under results, but it's mostly due to solid pitching and not a lack of offensive fireworks. The Cards boast a plus-24 run differential, and that's thanks to some impressive work on the road. The under is 6-3-1 over their past 10 games on the road. They have allowed four or fewer runs in 14 of their 24 away games this season.

            Not So Super Nova

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue their series with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday at PNC Park, but they'll be in a difficult way against Jon Lester. The Pirates entered play on Monday just 1-5 across their past six at home, and they'll be facing the southpaw Lester. Chicago is 7-3 across Lester's past 10 outings, and they're 7-1 in his past eight assignments against NL Central foes. Conversely, Ivan Nova has been awful lately, as have the Bucs when he is on the hill. The Pirates are 1-4 over Nova's past five outings, they're 1-5 in his past six tries against winning teams and they're 1-6 across his past seven assignments against divisional foes. The Pirates are also 1-10 over Nova's past 11 starts following a team loss in their previous game. It could be a high-scoring game, as the 'over' is 4-0 in Lester's past four assignments against the Cubs, 4-0 in his past four starts in the Steel City and the over was 14-6 in the past 20 between these divisional mates entering play on Monday.

            Looking Ahead

            Tuesday, May 29

The game on Tuesday between the Blue Jays and Red Sox feature two pitchers who know the opposition well. Marco Estrada takes the ball for the Jays, while the BoSox counter with Rick Porcello. Justin Smoak has amassed just a .250 average (8-for-32) against Porcello in his career, but when he hits it he hits it. He has two doubles, three homers, 10 RBI and a stellar .978 OPS against the right-hander in his career. Kendrys Morales has also accounted for two bombs and seven RBI over 39 ABs against Porcello. Josh Donaldson hasn't powered up against Porcello, but he is hitting a solid .308 (12-for-39) with two doubles and a homer. Porcello has managed to dance around the trouble spots, however, as Boston is 5-1 in his past six starts at Fenway against Toronto.

The Blue Jays haven't been as fortunate with Estrada against the Red Sox. They're 1-4 in his past five road outings against the BoSox, and 0-8 in his past eight outings overall against Boston.

In late-night action, the resurgent Mariners host the Rangers and they'll have Felix Hernandez on the bump. The M's are 5-2 over King Felix's past seven outings, while going 16-5 in their past 21 outings against right-handed pitching entering play on Monday. They're also 6-0 in their past six against losing teams. Seattle boasts a 5-1 record over their past six against Texas with Hernandez on the hill, while going 5-1 in his past six against the Rangers at Safeco, too. The under is also 5-2 in his past seven starts against Texas.

            Weather Report

The winds will be blowing in from right field to home plate at Progressive Field in Cleveland for the battle between the White Sox and Indians. The winds will be anywhere from 10-13 mph, which might be the only thing to aid the ailing Indians bullpen at the moment. Across Lake Erie in the Motor City, winds will also be gusting 10-13 mph at Comerica Field for the game between the Angels and Tigers. However, winds will be blowing from left field to first base across the diamond. In Oakland, the winds will be blowing out from home plate to straightaway center field at a 12-15 mph clip for the contest between the Rays and A's.

In Atlanta, precipitation will be the issue for the game between the Mets and Braves. Thunderstorms are forecasted all afternoon and into the evening at a 60-80 percent chance. The chances taper off to 30 percent after 11pm ET, so it could be a weather-delayed game and a long night in Georgia. When they do get the game in the winds will be howling from 11-14 mph in from center field to home plate.

            Wednesday, May 30

If the Cubs and Pirates are able to play (see below), Kyle Hendricks will likely shine. The current collection of Pirates have managed a .263 average (40-for-152) against him, with one player doing most of the damage. Gregory Polanco is 10-for-25 (.400) with two doubles, two homers and three RBI with a 1.143 OPS against Hendricks in his career. Perhaps Hendricks will be the elixir to cure Polanco's hitting woes, as he entered play Monday with no homers or RBI across the past 10 outings. The way Polanco is going, Hendricks should be able to mow him down, as well as the rest of the Bucs.

If the Indians are able to get underway against the White Sox, Corey Kluber will be spot on. He has held the current collection of White Sox to a .236 opponent average (39-for-165) with six homers and 15 RBI. One player has had his number, however, as Jose Abreu is a .356 (16-for-45) career hitter against the Klubot with three doubles, five homers, 12 RBI and a 1.156 OPS. If Kluber can steer clear of Abreu, and weather doesn't shorten his night, he'll have his way with the scuffling Pale Hose.

Few have been able to hit James Paxton lately, and the current roster of Rangers have managed just 11 doubles, two homers and 17 RBI in 131 career at-bats against him, striking out 30 times. Only Adrian Beltre has had any measure of success against the southpaw, and he is on the 10-day DL. In fact, Beltre accounts for nine of the hits and seven of the RBI against Paxton. If you factor out Beltre, the current Texas players have managed just 10 doubles, a homer and 10 RBI in 114 at-bats against the southpaw. In explicably, they did tune him up for five earned runs, six hits and three walks in just four innings in a no-decision in Arlington on April 21, so this will be a revenge game for Paxton. He hasn't lost since March 31, a span of 10 starts.

            Weather Report

There will be several trouble spots on Hump Day. In Cleveland, wind and rain will be the issue. There is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms at first pitch, bumping up to 80 percent from 2-4pm ET. Chances drop somewhat in the early-evening hours, but the White Sox and Indians are likely to be dancing through the rain drops or enduring a long delay. The winds will be blowing out from 13-16 mph from home plate to the left-center power alley when they do get underway.

Over the Memorial Day weekend the Baltimore suburbs of Catonsville, and especially Elliott City, were hammered by flash flooding of the Patapsco River. Unfortunately for that area and the game between the Nationals and Orioles, more rain is coming. There is a steady chance of rain all day on Wednesday, picking up to 50 percent at game time for the Nats and O's. This game is likely to be delayed and/or postponed. The same holds true for the Cubs-Pirates tilt in the Steel City. There is a 45 percent or greater chance of rain all day, and since these two NL Central rivals see each others so frequently, a day-night doubleheader in the future is the likely course of action.

In Detroit, weather will also be a problem, as there is an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms for first pitch from Comerica. The chances die down to 60 percent by 10pm ET, but the weather will not move out until at least 11pm ET and that will make for a long day for both of these clubs and the fans. It's almost summer, and it's Atlanta...so you will see the Braves on this report rather frequently. There is a 60 percent chance of storms all evening, dying off to around 25 percent by 11pm ET. Again, these are division rivals, so a reschedule is possible sooner rather than later.

At Fenway Park, the Jays and Red Sox will not have to deal with any precip, but the winds will be gusting in from Pesky's Pole to home plate at 10-13 mph, keeping the ball down for left-handed hitters. The winner of the night in the wind category will be Oakland Coliseum, as the winds will be gusting anywhere from 19-23 mph from home plate to the right-center field power alley. 'Over' anyone?

                  • "Hard, hard." Cardinals rookie Hicks lighting up radar guns
                    May 29, 2018

Jordan Hicks can't explain where the gas comes from. If he's being honest, the St. Louis Cardinals rookie flamethrower doesn't really want to. Best not to overthink it.

So the 21-year-old reliever steps on the rubber and lets his mind go blank before beginning a delivery that looks like it could fit in a phone booth. No long levers. No exaggerated windup. Just straight fire - stuff that makes the readout from the radar gun look like a misprint.

                    101. 102. 103. 104. 105.

It's the kind of speed that sends a jolt through the crowd and the opposing dugout alike. The kind that allowed Hicks to bypass Double-A and Triple-A entirely on his way to The Show.

Even the heir apparent to New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman as the hardest-throwing arm in the majors can't help but peek up after letting one rip.

''I like to see because I know I just put that much effort into it, what did I get out of it?'' Hicks said. ''What was the final outcome?''

Typically, outs. Relying on a two-seam fastball that frequently reaching triple digits, Hicks is 2-1 with a 1.75 ERA in 24 games this season for the Cardinals, one of the constants in a bullpen that's been erratic at best. The learning curve is still in progress - Hicks has 16 walks against 11 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings - but Matheny is encouraged that Hicks is trying to truly pitch instead of focusing on lighting up the gun.

While Matheny understands the attention that comes with Hicks' feats - like when he threw five consecutive pitches at 103 mph and above to Philadelphia's Odubel Herrera on May 20 - he's just as pleased with Hicks' mentality. Three days after going heavy to Herrera, Hicks struck out two batters in an inning of work against the Kansas City Royals.

''I was afraid he was going to try and hit 112, but he came out and probably had his best outing,'' Matheny said. ''And it was under control, but it still wasn't holding back, but it was in the zone. Those are the things that we need. He can throw as hard as he wants to but control counts and have a purpose of why you're making a pitch and not to just `wow' the watching world.''

Hicks is actually doing a little of both.

Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Josh Harrison likes to stand his ground in the batter's box, a philosophy that ended with him getting hit 23 times last year, the second-highest total in the majors. He was warned by teammate Jordy Mercer about the way Hicks' fastball runs in on right-handed hitters, but still he dug in as usual against Hicks for an at-bat Saturday.

On the first pitch, Hicks sent 101 mph whizzing inches from the pinky finger in Harrison's left hand, the one Harrison broke after getting drilled by Miami's Jose Urena. He wasn't quite so comfortable after that.

''It comes out hot, I'll tell you that,'' Harrison said. ''The first one, you can go back and look at the replay, when I took it, I pulled my hands in and I said `Ooooooh.'''

Harrison worked the count full before grounding out to second base. He walked away equal parts frustrated and impressed.

''Every single one he threw me had some sink or some run,'' he said.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle likened the mix of power and movement a ''gift from God.'' One Hicks and the Cardinals are still trying to harness, both on the field and off.

Hicks was invited to big league camp for the first time in spring training, only to find his initial stay short-lived after he had issues getting to meetings on time, something Hicks called ''a learning experience'' when St. Louis brought him up in late March. Though Hicks was impressive from the jump, it looked like he would start the year in the minors.

Then he made an emergency Grapefruit League start in place of Adam Wainwright against the Nationals on March 25 and held a lineup that featured nearly all of Washington's regulars to one hit over four innings. It was the kind of outing that left the Cardinals with little choice. Hicks' stuff was so good, sending him down seemed sort of pointless.

''If I didn't do well that day, if I didn't pitch the way I pitched, I wouldn't be here,'' Hicks said.

Getting to the majors is one thing. Sticking around is another. Save for a bumpy appearance against the Phillies on May 17 when he gave up three runs without retiring a batter, Hicks has been dominant. Opponents are hitting just .161 against him. Though he only struck out one in 2 2/3 innings against the Pirates over the weekend, he showed the ability to turn hitters' timing into a hot mess.

''The swing and misses are going to come, there's no question about it,'' Matheny said. ''We're going to need as many bullets as he has and get him on the mound as often as we can.''

Provided his body holds up under the strain. Though that's the weird part. Hicks doesn't look like he's giving max effort on the mound. The ball explodes out of his hand anyway.

The ''little'' 6-foot-2, 185-pound teenager from Houston who hit 90 on the gun when the Cardinals grabbed him with a supplemental third-round pick in the 2015 draft has added 25 pounds of muscle and 10-15 mph of velocity. Can he go higher? Maybe. That's part of the fun. Hicks never thought he'd top 100. Some days that's at the bottom of his range. Buckle up.

''I just try to get a little more from my legs and throw hard,'' Hicks said. ''Hard, hard.''

                          Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                          13) Guy at South Point Casino Tuesday bet $90,000 on Golden State to win the NBA Finals; if they do win, he wins $10,000. Risking $90K to win $10K makes for a long couple weeks until the deed is actually done.

                          12) Houston Rockets missed 27 straight 3-pointers Monday night; read somewhere on the Interweb that their odds of missing 27 straight 3-pointers was something like 70,000-1.

During the time the Rockets were going 0-27, Golden State was 13-23 behind the arc.

                          11) Dodgers’ first 25 wins this season were won by 15 different pitchers, which is kind of hard to believe. Had to double-check that, but it is true.

                          10) When major league teams play a doubleheader, the two home plate umpires do not work the other game.

                          9) World Series of Poker started Tuesday; will be 78 events from now until July 17. Few years ago, I was staying at the Rio and walked around the World Series for a half hour or so- wasn’t much fun watching other people play cards.

Very quiet room though; this huge floor of a convention center filled with card tables- the only sound you hear is chips clicking together.

                          8) Why people buy “conference championship” t-shirts? Why? Wait to see if your team wins the league championship; thats the t-shirt you want. If your team loses in the finals, then you go back and buy the conference champ t-shirt, if you want.

                          7) In 22 road games, Aaron Judge is hitting .221 with three homers, seven RBI.

In 30 home games, he is hitting .337 with 12 homers and 33 RBI.

                          6) Giants’ P Dereck Rodriguez made his MLB last night in Denver, after Jeff Samardzija left the game after the first inning with a shoulder issue. Dereck is the son of Hall of Fame catcher Pudge Rodriguez.

                          5) Mets put Noah Syndergaard on the DL Tuesday morning with a sprained ligament in a finger on his pitching hand, then oft-injured Steven Matz left Tuesday night’s game with an injury, apparently a blister on his pitching hand.

                          4) Glad to hear the 76ers’ coach Brett Brown got a 3-year contract extension; he coached thru lot of losing seasons but then finally got to enjoy success this season. Good for him.

                          3) Atlanta Braves started eight different pitchers in their last 11 games.

                          2) Going into Tuesday’s game, Dodgers had been without Clayton Kershaw for 24 games. In those games, LA’s starting pitchers had a 2.98 ERA, 1.12 WHIP.

1— NC State hasn’t won a conference title in football, basketball or baseball since 1992.
