  • Saturday’s 6-pack

Odds to win one of the last three golf majors this year:

    3-1— Dustin Johnson

    5-1—- Jason Day, Rickie Fowler

    8-1— Sergio Garcia, Tommy Fleetwood

    10-1— Paul Casey

    12-1— Brooks Koepka

15-1— Tyrrell Hatton, Branden Grace, Matt Kuchar

    Quote of the Day
“You are the damn dumbest smart kid I know.”
    Jon Voight, in Varsity Blues

    Saturday’s quiz
What was the named of the domed stadium where the Seahawks/Mariners used to play their home games?

    Friday’s quiz
Hall of Famer Kurt Warner holds the record for most consecutive regular season games where his team was favored, 55 games in a row. Tom Brady (50) is second on the list.

    Thursday’s quiz
Pablo Sandoval is the last major leaguer to hit three homers in a World Series game, in 2012.

    *************************

    Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

    13) James Harden has missed his last 20 shots behind the arc; during that time, Houston has still outscored the Warriors by 12 points. Go figure.

    12) Rockets’ star Chris Paul (hamstring) is out for Saturday’s Game 6 at Golden State.

    11) Sunday afternoon was supposed to be Tanaka vs Ohtani in the Bronx, but the Angels scratched Ohtani from the start, saying “they are just managing his workload.”

Ohtani has thrown 40.1 innings in seven starts this year, not really that big a workload. Am guessing the TV people in Japan are upset; Tanaka-Ohtani would be big ratings in Japan.

    10) Milwaukee Brewers are 32-20, in first place in NL Central, but they’ve been shut out in nine of their 20 losses, which means they’re 32-11 when they score at least one run.

    9) Eli Manning has a contract with memorabilia dealer Steiner Sports to sell some of his game-worn stuff — he was accused of defrauding collectors by selling equipment that he never actually wore, but he recently settled the suit out of court. In other words, Eli is a greedy creep.

While Manning bought his way out of the suit, the Giants fired three employees who worked on the team’s equipment staff. It is good to be rich- they only fire the worker bees.

    8) Back when the Giants had training camp here in Albany, a friend of mine’s son asked Eli to sign a mini-helmet for him. Eli said yes, but he wouldn’t sign with a silver Sharpie, he insisted on signing with a black Sharpie, which doesn’t show up as well on the dark blue helmet.

Apparently the only time he uses a silver Sharpie is if he is getting paid to sign stuff for Steiner Sports.

    7) Giants’ Gorkys Hernández had the most plate appearances without a home run last season (348); he already has five homers this season.

    6) Red Sox activated Dustin Pedroia from the DL, DFA’d Hanley Ramirez. Ramirez was 302 PA away from his $22M option kicking in for 2019, so they told him to…..take a hike.

    5) Mariners traded for Tampa Bay closer Alex Colome and CF Denard Span. giving up pitchers Andrew Moore, Tommy Romero. Moore is 1-5, 5.34 in 11 MLB games (9 starts), none this year.

Span will play CF with Dee Gordon likely moving back to 2B until Robinson Cabo’s 80-game suspension is over. Mariners add $9M in salary with this movie, but they saved $12M when Cano got suspended.

    4) Going into Friday’s games, Mets were on pace to have the lowest OPS from the cleanup spot in the history of baseball, which obviously isn’t good. OPS is on-base %age plus slugging percentage.

    3) Going into Friday’s games, major league home teams are winning only 49% of the time this season; there has never been a season where home teams lost more games than they won.

    2) Before the playoff game Friday night. a gambler at SouthPoint Casino in Las Vegas bet $100K on the Cavaliers to win their series vs Boston at +$165. Same bettor also put $25K on Cleveland to win NBA title at 18-1, and another $25K at 15/1.

    1) Last time both NBA conference finals went seven games was 1979; Sonics-Bullets was the NBA Finals, the year before Bird-Magic. Could happen again this year.

    • LEADING OFF: Yankees to activate Bird, Red Sox cut Hanley
      May 25, 2018

A look at what's happen around the majors Saturday:

      FLIGHT PLAN

The Yankees plan to activate first baseman Greg Bird from the DL before a game against the Angels, forcing New York to make a difficult roster decision. Bird has been sidelined since having right ankle surgery on March 27. New York likely will decide whether to cut from eight relief pitchers to seven or option Tyler Austin to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre despite his strong performance in Bird's absence.

      ODD-MAN OUT

Boston is moving on without slugger Hanley Ramirez after designating him for assignment Friday to clear space for Dustin Pedroia to come off the DL. The Red Sox are responsible for the $15.25 million remaining on Ramirez's contract, but avoided triggering a $22 million salary for 2019 by cutting him loose. The move clears the way for Mitch Moreland to be the team's everyday first baseman, with J.D. Martinez a regular at DH and Blake Swihart picking up at-bats as a platoon partner at first base, catcher and DH. Pedroia is expected to make his first start of 2018 in a game against Atlanta.

      WELCOME ABOARD

Denard Span and Alex Colome are expected to arrive in Seattle after the Mariners acquired them from Tampa Bay in the season's first major trade Friday. Span will hold down left field regularly with Guillermo Heredia sliding to center and Dee Gordon taking over at second base for suspended star Robinson Cano. Colome led the major leagues with 47 saves last season and will help solidify a bullpen that's been relied on heavily early in the season. Seattle is set to continue a series against Minnesota.

      HOMECOMING

Sean Newcomb, born in Massachusetts and raised about 45 miles from Fenway Park, returns with the Atlanta Braves to pitch against Boston. The 24-year-old lefty, a 2014 first-round draft pick by the Angels out of the University of Hartford, is 5-1 with a 2.39 ERA. He's won all four starts this month, allowing only one run and nine hits in 25 innings. Newcomb is 5-0 in eight outings since losing his first game of the season on April 2. Drew Pomeranz (1-2, 5.97) goes for the Red Sox.

      BIRTHDAY BOY

Bartolo Colon makes his first start since turning 45 on Thursday when the Texas Rangers take on Kansas City. Pitching for his 11th major league team, the portly Colon (2-2, 3.51 ERA) is the oldest active player in the majors. His teammates honored him before Thursday's game, and his face ended up in the birthday cake during the celebration. Big Sexy has 242 career wins and needs one more to match Hall of Famer Juan Marichal for the most by a pitcher from the Dominican Republic.

      BARRIA IS BACK

Angels rookie Jaime Barria has yet to allow more than two runs in any of his five career starts, a streak the 21-year-old will test against New York at Yankee Stadium. Barria pitched one-run ball for seven innings against Houston in his last start but got a no-decision in a 5-3 loss, then was optioned briefly back to Triple-A. He'll oppose RHP Sonny Gray (3-3, 5.48), who is coming off eight dominant innings against Kansas City in his previous start.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

                      13) Warriors 115, Rockets 86— Golden State outscored Houston 93-47 over the final three quarters, 64-25 in second half. Game 7 is Monday in Houston; the health of Chris Paul’s legs will obviously determine whether the Rockets have a chance or not.

                      12) This is first time since 1979 that both conference finals will go to a seventh game.

                      11) Houston’s PJ Tucker played 87 college games for Texas; he was 2-4 behind the arc in those 87 games, but he’s worked like hell on improving his game.

In the NBA, Tucker is 436 for 1,225 behind the arc (35.6%); he shot 37.1% on 3’s this season. He’s worked his butt off and now he makes $8M a year playing ball. Good for him.

                      10) Madison Bumgarner struck out eight of 12 hitters he faced in his first rehab game; he only threw 47 pitches, so he may have one more rehab game before the Giants activate him.

                      9) Mike Trout’s on-base %age the last three years: .441, .442, .461

                      8) Russell Martin played shortstop for Toronto Saturday, his first appearance at short in 1,555 major league games. He’s played third base in 33 games.

                      7) There are only three major leaguers this year who have 10+ homers and 10+ stolen bases: Mookie Betts, Mike Trout and White Sox SS Tim Anderson.

                      6) When Mets’ SS Amed Rosario walked in the 5th inning Saturday, it was his first walk in his last 92 plate appearances.

                      5) 45-year old Bartolo Colon throws fastballs 83% of the time, the highest %age of any starting pitcher in the big leagues.

                      4) Reds 6, Rockies 5— Colorado had bases loaded, none out in 9th inning, didn’t score- they hit into a line drive DP to end game, the 5th double play they hit into in the game.

                      3) Reds’ 2B Scooter Gennett had the second 5-hit game of his career Saturday; the first one included four homers and 10 RBI.

                      2) Greedy bastard update: Mobil station on corner of Wolf/Sand Creek in my town raised the price of gas 20 cents a gallon this week, because it is Memorial Day weekend. It is $3.05 there, it is $2.89 at the Mobil station a half-mile away at the corner of Central/Fuller.

                      1) San Diego 3B Christian Villanueva hit two homers last night, is 2nd in the NL in homers, behind only Bryce Harper.

                      • Indians' bullpen unsettled heading into series finale vs. Astros
                        May 27, 2018

CLEVELAND -- The more the Cleveland Indians think they're making progress in stabilizing their bullpen, the more unsettled the bullpen gets.

Saturday, a day after Cleveland's two top relievers, closer Cody Allen and Andrew Miller combined to give up four runs in two innings while helping to turn a 2-0 Indians lead into an 11-2 loss, the Indians made four roster moves, all of them involving relief pitchers.

An unsettled bullpen is bad anytime, but it's even more dangerous when a team is playing the defending World Series champions, which the Indians will be doing Sunday afternoon in the final game of their four-game series with the Houston Astros.

The most impactful of the four roster moves made by the Indians Saturday was placing Miller on the 10-day disabled list for the second time in a month.

Miller was on the DL from April 26 to May 10 with a strained left hamstring, and Saturday he went back on the DL with right knee inflammation. It's the same injury that caused Miller to spend a month on the DL last season.

"It's not allowing him to be himself," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "I don't know what the next step will be. There's no timetable for his return. We're going to have to put our heads together and figure this thing out. The only timetable is to get him right."

Losing Miller is a big blow to an Indians bullpen that ranks a distant last in the American League with a 6.23 ERA, over a full run higher than the next closest team.

"Sometimes when it's not convenient, you've still got to do the right thing," said Francona of the decision to put Miller on the DL.

The Indians Saturday also designated reliever Oliver Drake for assignment and recalled relievers Ben Taylor and Evan Marshall from Triple-A Columbus.

Fortunately for the Indians and their underperforming bullpen, their starter for Sunday's game is Trevor Bauer, one of the most dependable starters in the league. Bauer (4-3, 2.35) ranks seventh in the American League in ERA. His last start was a 10-1 win over the Cubs on May 22, in which he pitched six scoreless innings on seven hits, with six strikeouts and two walks.

Bauer is undefeated in seven career starts against the Astros. He's 7-0 with a 2.89 ERA.

Houston on Sunday will send Gerrit Cole to the mound. Cole (5-1, 1.86) leads the league in strikeouts (101) and strikeouts per nine innings (13.4), and he's second to teammate Justin Verlander in ERA and opponents' batting average (.169).

Bauer and Cole also have a history as teammates in college at UCLA. In the 2011 June Draft, Cole was the first overall pick, by the Pirates, and Bauer was selected third overall by the Diamondbacks. Although teammates at UCLA, Bauer and Cole make no secret about their dislike for one another, which could add some extra juice to Sunday's game.

"Obviously, playing the Indians, I'll treat it like any other start or opponent," Cole told MLB.com. "I'm fortunate to lock up against a fantastic pitcher, so you know you're going to have to be on your game."

Sunday will only be Cole's second career start against the Indians. His other came for the Pirates on July 5, 2015, a 5-3 victory in which Cole pitched eight innings giving up three runs on five hits, with five strikeouts and one walk.

                        • Giants' MadBum sharp in first rehab start
                          May 26, 2018

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) San Francisco Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner was sharp in his first rehabilitation start since breaking the pinkie on his pitching hand in March, striking out eight while throwing 47 pitches over 3 2/3 hitless innings for Triple-A Sacramento.

It was such an encouraging start that Bumgarner didn't rule out an immediate return to the Giants - if that decision was made.

''I obviously didn't know before today, but judging off the way I felt out there, I think so for sure,'' Bumgarner said. ''I wouldn't say I'd be back and be in midseason form, but I feel definitely good enough to get some outs.''

Bumgarner threw 31 strikes and walked one Saturday night while facing 12 hitters against the Albuquerque Isotopes.

The appearance came almost two months to the day of having surgery to insert three pins into his pinkie after injuring the hand in the final game of spring training.

''I feel pretty good about how everything was working.,'' Bumgarner said. ''My command was good. My breaking balls were doing pretty good also, so that's what I was looking for, everything headed in the right direction.''

Bumgarner's fastball was clocked between 91-93 mph and he effectively mixed pitches in his most extensive work since getting hurt.

The 2014 World Series MVP also drew a rousing ovation from the sold-out crowd at Raley Field when he singled to right field leading off the bottom of the third on the first pitch from Albuquerque's Antonio Senzatela.

''First pitch I've seen in a while,'' Bumgarner said. ''A little tardy there. I'll take it for sure.''

Because Sacramento leaves for a road trip next week, Bumgarner is likely to next pitch for Single-A San Jose on Thursday or Friday if he isn't called up to the big league ballclub.

''Obviously we'll see how I feel tomorrow and bounce back from it,'' Bumgarner said. ''We're not rushing it extremely, but we're definitely not taking our time with it, either. We're ramping it up pretty quick.''

Bumgarner struck out the side in the first inning, needed only six pitches to get through the second, then got Senzatela to strike out looking in the third on a 61 mph off-speed pitch.

''The breaking stuff was moving right, the command of it was good,'' Bumgarner said. ''The fastball command was good. Pretty much everything I was looking for. It's not perfect, but it was definitely something to feel good about for the first time out there.''

The outing was an encouraging sign for the 28-year-old Bumgarner, who hasn't pitched a full season in the majors since 2016. He was limited to 17 starts in 2017 following a dirt bike accident during an off day in Colorado last April that left him with shoulder and rib injuries.

Bumgarner finished 4-9 last year with a 3.32 ERA that was the second-highest of his career but bounced back with strong a spring training that included 30 strikeouts over 21 innings before getting hurt.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said his ace was in peak form in the spring and tabbed the big lefty to be the team's opening day starter until he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Kansas City's Whit Merrifield on March 23.

Following Bumgarner's surgery the following day, Bochy pointed to a June return that remains on pace. The Giants skipper previously indicated last week that he would like to see his ace stretched out to 75 pitches before the team activates Bumgarner off the disabled list.

Bumgarner threw off a mound three times early in his rehab and faced hitters for the first time this past Tuesday in Houston.

The Giants are trying to be as patient and cautious as possible with Bumgarner's rehab despite being in obvious need of pitching help.

Johnny Cueto, the team's No. 2 starter, has been on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation since late April and recently met with specialist Dr. James Andrews. Andrews recommended 6-to-8 weeks of rest rather than surgery.

Additionally, No. 3 starter Jeff Samardzija began the season on the DL because of a pectoral injury. Samardzija won his first start April 20, but is 0-3 since.

                          • Dodgers' Kershaw throw simulated game
                            May 26, 2018

LOS ANGELES (AP) Clayton Kershaw is one step closer to a return with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kershaw pitched a four-inning simulated game Saturday, raising the possibility that he could be back in their rotation next week.

The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner has been on the disabled list nearly a month with left biceps tendinitis.

Asked if he should be able to go in five days, Kershaw said: ''Yeah, I should be.''

Kershaw got up and down, mirroring game conditions, and pitched to Cody Bellinger, Chase Utley, Austin Barnes and Enrique Hernandez.

Kershaw is 1-4 with a 2.86 ERA this season.

It's not certain he'll pitch in five days, when the Dodgers play Philadelphia in the finale of a 10-game homestand.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who watched the workout with Andrew Friedman, the team's president of baseball operations, wants to see how Kershaw feels before determining when and where he will pitch next.

Roberts had not yet talked to Kershaw before speaking with reporters.

''That's really encouraging,'' Roberts said after learning Kershaw said he should be ready to be back in the rotation. ''For us, we've still got to talk through some things and make sure the right situation is for Kersh. A lot of it depends on how he feels (Sunday) and how things play out. Having him pitch today, feeling good coming off the mound, a lot of positives.''

Through this stint on the disabled list, Kershaw found himself examining his mechanics.

''You never should focus on mechanics when you're competing. That's what the in between is,'' Kershaw said. ''I've never really been a mechanics guy. The past few weeks I've been working on it a little bit. It's probably the first time that I can remember that I really focused on it.''

Kershaw declined to explain what motivated him to focus on mechanics.

The 30-year-old left-hander was positive about where he's at now.

''It's so hard to tell. Been working on little stuff here and there,'' Kershaw said. ''You start focusing on getting hitters out and you stop thinking about your mechanics. Start worrying about trying to get people out. Hopefully muscle memory is ingrained in there. Felt a little bit better today.''

Kershaw hadn't felt as positive following his previous bullpen, but he was encouraged Saturday.

''You can't simulate a big league game. All the things you do to prepare to pitch a big league game, you really don't know where you're at until you're in one,'' Kershaw said.

''You do all you can to prepare. Ultimately, the only way to figure out if you're ready or not is to face guys. I feel like I didn't lose a whole lot from where I was but worked on a lot these last few weeks to try to get better and try to get healthy.''

The Dodgers, who were one win away from the World Series title last year, are below .500.

''Being on the DL is no fun. Thankful that it wasn't too incredibly long,'' Kershaw said. ''Just to be able to get back out there. You don't feel a part of the team a whole lot when you're on the DL. It's good to be out there and hopefully help a little bit.''

                            • LEADING OFF: Trout trots at Yankee Stadium, NL East stout
                              May 26, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                              FISH STICK

Mike Trout tries to homer in his fourth straight game when the Los Angeles Angels play their series finale at Yankee Stadium. The two-time MVP is coming off his first career game with four extra-base hits - and first five-hit performance - on Saturday night. He will face New York righty Masahiro Tanaka (5-2, 4.95 ERA), who has a 1.60 ERA in five lifetime starts against the Angels.

Tanaka was initially lined up to pitch against Japanese countryman Shohei Ohtani, but the two-way rookie sensation was pushed back to manage his workload. Instead, it will be Garrett Richards (4-3, 3.31) getting the ball for Los Angeles on his 30th birthday. Richards is 0-4 with an 8.10 ERA in six career games, five starts, against the Yankees. They tagged him for a season-high nine runs - five earned - over 1 2/3 innings in an 11-1 loss to Tanaka at home on April 28.

                              NL MOST

The defending NL East champion Washington Nationals are 28-22 through 50 games and still stuck in third place in the surprisingly stout division. The division leaders? The Philadelphia Phillies, who haven't led this late in a season since 2011, when they won 102 games. The Nats clinched what was dubbed the NL ''Least'' in early September last year, but this year there are four teams above .500 on Memorial Day weekend, including the second-place Braves and fourth-place Mets. Stephen Strasburg starts as Washington tries for a sweep in Miami.

                              GRUDGE MATCH

Trevor Bauer will pitch against Houston for the first time since questioning on Twitter how Astros pitchers have been able to improve the movement on their pitches. Bauer later told reporters that he never accused them of cheating.

Several Houston players criticized Bauer on their Twitter accounts, including McCullers and Collin McHugh.

Gerrit Cole, a teammate of Bauer's at UCLA, will start for Houston. The two reportedly had a strained relationship in college, adding more intrigue to the game. Cole was the first pick in the 2011 draft by Pittsburgh while Bauer was taken third by Arizona.

                              SUPER START

Cardinals righty Miles Mikolas (6-0, 2.24) has excelled since returning from a three-season stint in Japan. The 29-year-old threw his first career shutout in his last start against Kansas City, and aims to duplicate that success when he faces Pittsburgh at PNC Park. Jameson Taillon (2-4, 4.56) will look for his first win since April 9. He is 0-4 with a 5.83 ERA in his last eight starts for the Pirates.

                              MAYBE

Tigers star Miguel Cabrera could return after missing more than three weeks. The first baseman has been out since May 4 because of a strained right hamstring. Detroit takes on the White Sox at Comerica Park.

                              HAM IT UP

Royals righty Jason Hammel faces Rangers lefty Cole Hamels in Texas. Hamels (3-4, 3.38) has won his last two starts, allowing just five hits in 13 innings against the Astros and Yankees. Hammel (1-5, 5.70) pitched well vs. St. Louis in his previous start to post his first win of the year.
