Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking: Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies (6-1, 1.99 ERA, $259)

The Phillies signed Jake Arrieta to a $75 million, three-year contract at the beginning of March to anchor their starting pitching staff, and while Arrieta is pitching well, there’s no question he’s No. 2 in the rotation.

The ace of the staff is 24-year-old righty Aaron Nola, who’s produced seven quality starts in his nine trips to the bump this season. He owns a 0.89 ERA with 23 strikeouts compared to just three walks over his last three starts and the Under is 6-2-1 in his nine outings this season.

He’s among the big league leaders in ERA, WHIP (0.99) and ground ball outs, and he’s first among all major league pitchers in Wins Above Replacement (2.9).

Slumping: Joe Biagini, Toronto Blue Jays (0-2, 7.89 ERA, -$100)

Joe Biagini should not be a starting pitcher in the big leagues – even as the last man in the rotation. But the Toronto Blue Jays are cheap and would rather turn a perfectly good long relief pitcher and turn him into a rotten fifth starter.

Biagini’s career ERA as a reliever is 3.44 compared to 5.97 as a starter since he entered the big leagues in 2016. He’s made three starts for the Jays this season and has yet to produce a quality start. He was originally scheduled to start on Saturday but manager John Gibbons elected to delay the torture for Jays fans on extra day.

LEADING OFF: Ohtani starts, Hill ailing, Darvish tries again

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

OHTANI TIME

Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani pitches at home against Tampa Bay. He's 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA in six starts, and struck out 11 Twins in his last outing. The 23-year-old rookie is hitting .321 with six home runs and 17 RBIs in 84 at-bats.

STARTING A NEW TREND?

Veteran reliever Sergio Romo, who made his first big league start Saturday night, will start for the second straight day for Tampa Bay. It's an unusual move by manager Kevin Cash, who liked the idea of the righty Romo going against the Angels' right-handed hitters at the top of the lineup this weekend. The bold experiment paid off big-time when Romo struck out Zack Cozart, Mike Trout and Justin Upton on 18 pitches to begin the bottom of the first at Anaheim.

That was the only inning Romo pitched after 588 relief appearances in a row. Cash says Romo will throw one or two innings in his return as a starter.

NOT AGAIN

The Dodgers will see how Rich Hill is feeling, a day after the lefty starter lasted just two pitches at Washington. Hill was pulled in the first inning with a recurrence of the blister problem that has already put him on the disabled list twice this season. Television close-ups showed a broken and bloody fingernail on Hill's left middle finger. Blisters have plagued the 38-year-old Hill for the past several seasons. ''Unfortunately, I don't have answers at this time for the blister issue,'' Hill said.

HE'S BACK

Clay Buchholz will be brought up from Triple-A to start for Arizona, the first big league appearance for the 33-year-old since he tore the flexor tendon in his right forearm pitching for Philadelphia on April 11, 2017. He got hurt against the Mets and now he'll be starting against them at Citi Field.

ONCE MORE

Yu Darvish tries again to post his first win since signing a $126 million, six-year game contract with the Cubs. The 31-year-old righty came off the disabled list this week after being out with the flu, then exited after four innings because of cramping in his calf. Darvish is 0-3 with a 5.56 ERA in seven starts going into this game at Cincinnati.

Rays plan to have reliever Romo start 2nd straight day

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Tampa Bay Rays reliever Sergio Romo played 11 seasons before making his first major league start.

Not even 24 hours later, Romo will make his second.

Romo will start for the second consecutive day in the finale of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, Rays manager Kevin Cash said following a 5-3 win on Saturday night.

''I'm sure it will be talked about, but hopefully it works,'' Cash said.

Romo struck out all three batters he faced in the first inning, using 18 pitches to fan Zack Cozart, Mike Trout and Justin Upton.

Cash said Romo would have continued pitching if not for Daniel Robertson's grand slam in the second inning. Instead, Cash decided to take advantage of the 4-0 lead and immediately turn to rookie left-hander Ryan Yarbrough, who gave up one run in 6 1/3 innings.

Cash's plan going into the game was to minimize the number of times Yarbrough would have to face the heart of an Angels' lineup heavy on right-handed batters.

''Try not to read too much into it, but it did go really, really well with Romo's performance,'' Cash said. ''Once we got the lead, wanted to get him out and hand the ball off to Yarbs so he could kind of get comfortable. But I was really impressed with Sergio, the way he handled everything, because he might not admit to it but that's totally different. It's totally different than what he's ever been accustomed to and he adjusted to it. Threw strikes, opened the game with a slider, so it was just like he was pitching in the ninth inning.''

The approach Sunday will likely have a similar look, with Romo throwing one or two innings before the Rays turn to another pitcher. In this case, it could be left-handed starter Anthony Banda, who is 2-3 with a 5.96 ERA, though right-handed relievers Matt Andriese and Austin Pruitt might be options.

''We'll just kind of see how the first inning, first two innings play out,'' Cash said.

Romo will become the first pitcher to start on back-to-back days since Zack Greinke did so for the Milwaukee Brewers on July 7-8, 2012, when he threw only four pitches in the first outing before being ejected. According to ESPN, Oakland's Steve McCatty was the last to start a second straight day after pitching at least an inning of the first, on April 14-15, 1980.

The Rays, who have won six in a row and 18 of their last 26, have relied on their bullpen to carry them through a handful of games already this season because of injuries to their rotation. Cash seems intent on taking that idea to the extreme, and after being rewarded on Saturday, he wants to try his luck again.

As unorthodox as it might seem, Yarbrough said there were benefits to coming out of the bullpen instead of starting.

''It was kind of a nice feeling where there's no thinking involved. It's just get ready and go out there,'' Yarbrough said.

For his part, Romo seems to be settling into the mindset of a starter already.

''The way it worked out, Sergio is pumped,'' Cash said. ''I don't think he's here anymore, so he left to get his rest and get ready to throw one or two innings.''

Ohtani sparkles for Angels; Romo starts again for Rays

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Shohei Ohtani struck out nine while throwing 7 2/3 innings of excellent six-hit ball in his seventh career start, and the Los Angeles Angels snapped their five-game skid with a 5-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

Martin Maldonado homered and drove in two runs, and Zack Cozart drove in two more runs on sacrifice flies as the Angels wrapped up a disappointing 11-game homestand with only four victories - including both games started by Ohtani (4-1).

Los Angeles' rookie two-way sensation had another strong outing in the longest start of his stateside career. Ohtani retired 12 straight Rays after yielding rookie Johnny Field's homer leading off the third. Blake Parker pitched the ninth for his second save.

While Ohtani threw 110 pitches, reliever Sergio Romo started for Tampa Bay for the second consecutive day. He faced the Angels' first six batters and got four outs while becoming the first pitcher in 38 years to last at least one inning in back-to-back starts. The reliever gave way to Matt Andriese (1-2), who gave up two unearned runs in the fourth.

YANKEES 10, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Tyler Austin hit a pair of two-run homers, Sonny Gray (3-3) allowed four hits in eight innings and New York won its eighth consecutive series for the first time since 1998.

Miguel Andujar and Austin Romine added back-to-back homers in the ninth for the Yankees, who have won 14 of their last 15 against the AL Central.

Eric Skoglund (1-4) gave up six runs and eight hits in five innings.

RED SOX 5, ORIOLES 0

BOSTON (AP) - J.D. Martinez had hit first multihomer game for Boston and drove in three runs, and Andrew Benintendi had a two-run homer among his three hits. Boston is 6-1 against Baltimore this season.

Eduardo Rodriguez (4-1) scattered nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Baltimore lost for the 15th time in 16 road games. David Hess (1-1) gave up five runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in his second major league start.

ATHLETICS 9, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Daniel Mengden (4-4) allowed two hits over seven shutout innings to win his second straight start as Oakland completed a four-game sweep.

Marcus Semien hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs, and Matt Chapman had three hits.

Toronto designated hitter Kendrys Morales had two of Toronto's four hits and made his first big league pitching appearance with a scoreless ninth.

Joe Biagini (0-3) allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits in four-plus innings. He has lost eight straight decisions.

CUBS 6, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Yu Darvish (1-3) recovered from a shaky start for his first win with the Cubs, allowing one run and two hits in six innings.

In his second outing since coming off the disabled list Tuesday, the four-time All-Star overcame a 39-pitch first inning and finished six for the third time this season. It was Darvish's first start with Chicago since signing a $126 million, six-year contract in the offseason.

Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run homer, and Javier Baez and Ben Zobrist each had a solo shot off Tyler Mahle (3-6).

METS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Amed Rosario hit his first two home runs of the season and pinch-hitter Asdrubal Cabrera connected for a go-ahead drive, leading Noah Syndergaard and the Mets over the Arizona Diamondbacks for a surprising sweep.

The Mets hadn't won back-to-back games in more than a month before rolling past the NL West leaders for their first three-game sweep at home since September 2016 vs. Minnesota. Arizona has lost four in a row and 10 of 11.

Pitching in the majors for the first time in over a year, Clay Buchholz blanked the Mets on one hit until Rosario led off the sixth with his first home run, tying it at 1. Cabrera batted for Syndergaard with two outs in the seventh and launched a two-run shot off Jorge De La Rosa (0-2).

Syndergaard (4-1) gave up one run, on a groundout, and struck out seven. Robert Gsellman got five outs for his first big league save.

BRAVES 10, MARLINS 9

ATLANTA (AP) - Dansby Swanson's two-run single capped a six-run ninth inning, and the NL-leading Braves rallied to stun the Miami Marlins.

Ronald Acuna Jr. drove in two runs in the seventh and another in the ninth as the Braves moved 11 games over .500 for the first time since July 5, 2014. Atlanta has won nine of its last 12.

Miami led 6-0 after four innings and 9-4 to begin the ninth. Lewis Brinson's first career grand slam highlighted a six-run fourth, and Miguel Rojas homered twice and drove in four runs for the last-place Marlins, who have lost three of four.

Atlanta started the ninth with three runs off closer Brad Ziegler on Acuna's single, a throwing error by first baseman Justin Bour and a single by Nick Markakis. Taylor Guerrero (0-2) came on with two outs and allowed four straight batters to reach base.

A.J. Minter (3-0) allowed Rojas' homer in the ninth, but benefited from the rally.

DODGERS 7, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Kike Hernandez and Yasiel Puig each hit two-run homers, and the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of the Nationals.

Hernandez's blast off Stephen Strasburg in the fifth inning put the Dodgers up 3-2. Yasmani Grandal also homered off Strasburg (5-4), who allowed three runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts.

Alex Wood (1-4) pitched six innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs. Wood came out to start the seventh, but returned to the clubhouse after showing some discomfort during his warm-up tosses. Josh Fields recorded the final four outs for his second save.

Trea Turner homered for Washington. Juan Soto, at 19 the youngest active player in the majors, made his debut in the eighth as a pinch-hitter and struck out against Erik Goeddel.

MARINERS 3, TIGERS 2, 11 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) - Mitch Haniger hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth inning and Jean Segura's RBI single in the 11th gave the Mariners the victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Minnesota starter Francisco Liriano took a no-hitter into the seventh but closer Shane Greene blew his third save of the season, giving up Haniger's 11th home run on an 0-2 pitch with one out.

Dee Gordon led off the 11th with a single against Buck Farmer (0-3), stole second, then scored on Segura's single down the right-field line. Nick Vincent (2-1) picked up the win in relief.

WHITE SOX 3, RANGERS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Reynaldo Lopez allowed only two hits in a career-high eight innings and the White Sox beat the Texas Rangers for their first home series win this season.

Lopez (1-3) struck out eight and walked two in his first victory since Sept. 22 against Kansas City. Jace Fry pitched a perfect ninth for his first career save.

Leury Garcia had two hits and two RBIs, and Welington Castillo homered as the major league-worst White Sox (13-30) took three of four against last-place Texas. They won consecutive games for the first time since winning three in a row at Kansas City from April 26-28.

Mike Minor (3-3) struck out nine in five innings, but was charged with three runs and six hits. Texas was shut out for the first time this season.

CARDINALS 5, PHILLIES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jack Flaherty struck out a career-high 13 to earn his first major league win and Tyler O'Neill homered for the Cardinals.

Making his ninth big league start, Flaherty (1-1) gave up just two hits and walked one in 7 2/3 dominant innings. He also singled in the third for his first hit.

Jordan Hicks got four outs to finish the two-hitter and threw the fastest pitch in the majors this season, according to Statcast - a 105 mph fastball to Odubel Herrera in the ninth. Hicks hit 105 mph twice and 104 three times against Herrera, the five fastest pitches in the big leagues this year.

O'Neill, who had three hits, homered for the second time in two games. His solo shot off Aaron Nola (6-2) in the sixth made it 3-1.

Rhys Hoskins homered off Flaherty for the Phillies. Herrera went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, ending his on-base streak at 45 games.

GIANTS 9, ROCKIES 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Brandon Belt snapped a seventh-inning tie with a three-run homer for the Giants.

Nick Hundley added a solo shot later in the seventh for the Giants, who salvaged a four-game split after dropping the first two games of the series. Gorkys Hernandez hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

Belt connected for his 12th home run this season and fifth in seven games to give San Francisco an 8-5 lead. He came to the plate with Hernandez aboard on a leadoff single and Evan Longoria on following a one-out walk by reliever Bryan Shaw (1-2).

The Rockies trailed 5-4 going into the seventh before Nolan Arenado singled home a run off winner Sam Dyson (2-0).

PADRES 8, PIRATES 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Freddy Galvis drove in the go-ahead run in a four-run ninth inning with San Diego's second successful squeeze bunt of the game, and the Padres rallied for their third win of the four-game series.

Pittsburgh took a 5-4 lead into the ninth, but Jose Pirela and Christian Villaneuva singled to start the comeback against Felipe Vazquez (2-1), who blew a save for the first time in 10 chances this season.

Kirby Yates (3-0) allowed a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth to Josh Harrison, but got the win. Brad Hand worked around a pair of walks in the ninth for his 13th save.

TWINS 3, BREWERS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Logan Morrison hit a two-run single, and four relievers worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings to lift the Twins over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Addison Reed (1-3) struck out one batter in one hitless inning. Fernando Rodney fanned the side in the ninth for his ninth save.

Taylor Williams (0-2) walked Brian Dozier to lead off the eighth. Boone Logan entered and walked Max Kepler. Eddie Rosario was out on a swinging bunt that moved the runners to second and third, and Eduardo Escobar was intentionally walked to load the bases in front of Morrison.

13) In 2003, 44 starting pitchers threw 200+ innings in the major leagues. Last year, 15 pitchers threw 200+ innings. Pitchers are getting like race horses; way less durable.

12) Tampa Bay Rays are doing something different this year; with Archer-Snell-Faria their only three regular starting pitchers, they’re patching together the other games using their bullpen, even starting the same pitcher (Sergio Romo) in games Saturday/Sunday over the weekend.

So far, the Rays are 6-9 in the bullpen games.

11) Golden Knights’ Jonathan Marchessault is the first NHL player ever to score a goal in the first minute of a playoff game, and also in the last minute of the same game.

10) A golfer named Michael Arnaud on the web.com tour shot a 27 for nine holes this weekend; his first seven holes went: birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie- he shot 60 on the day.

7) HBO’s Hard Knocks should do training camp with Hamilton TigerCats of the CFL; Johnny Manziel is one the QB’s and 75-year old Jerry Glanville is the defensive coordinator, which means he’ll be leaving tickets for Elvis Presley at TiCat games all over Canada.

6) PJ Tucker is a key player for the Houston Rockets now, but from 2007-12, he played pro ball in six different countries, improving his game, preparing himself for his big chance, and when it came, boy was he ready.

5) A 93-year old guy in Ohio got his first hole-in-one last week, after playing golf for 65 years.

4) Golden Knights 3, Jets 2— Las Vegas is mad about hockey; everywhere you go, there are tons of people here watching Knights’ games. An expansion team playing for a title is a great story.

3) Mariners 3, Tigers 2 (11)— Francisco Liriano had a no-hitter going in 8th inning, but then Mitch Haniger tied the game with a homer off a reliever in the 8th inning.

2) A’s 9, Blue Jays 2— Oakland wraps up a stretch of 13 games against Houston-NY-Boston and Toronto, with last 10 of those games on the road and they went 7-6, 7-3 on the road trip.

1) One thing about Las Vegas sportsbooks; every time I wear a golf shirt from a college, and I mean every time, at least a couple people will comment on whichever team’s shirt I’m wearing, which leads to interesting conversations.

Saturday night it was an LSU shirt, Sunday a USC shirt. Doesn’t matter which team.
