  • Angels' Ohtani set for 'full gorilla' bullpen Sunday
    April 21, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to throw a ''full gorilla'' bullpen session on Sunday that will give the Los Angeles Angels a better idea if the blister that forced the Japanese two-way sensation out of his last pitching start has healed.

''He's feeling much better so we're encouraged,'' manager Mike Scioscia said Saturday before Angels played the San Francisco Giants.

Scioscia said he'll wait until after Sunday afternoon's game to confirm when Ohtani's next pitching start will be. It could be Monday at Houston.

A blister on his right middle finger forced him out of Tuesday night's start against Boston after just two innings. He allowed four hits and three runs on 66 pitches, and couldn't throw his breaking pitches for strikes.

Ohtani threw a light bullpen session on Friday before going 2 for 4 in an 8-1 loss to the Giants.

''He felt good,'' Scioscia said. ''It was just a touch and feel. The effort level was just really to feel the baseball. It wasn't a full gorilla bullpen where you go hard. Sunday's bullpen will give us a little better idea. But yesterday was definitely a good day as far as taking one step forward.''

Ohtani might also be back in the lineup as the designated hitter on Sunday, when the Angels are scheduled to face right-hander Johnny Cueto.

The left-handed hitter Ohtani wasn't in the lineup Saturday night, when the Angels faced left-hander Derek Holland. But he was hitting prodigious home runs in batting practice to right and center fields.

Scioscia said the decision to sit Ohtani on Saturday was based mostly on matchups but and also to get other players into the lineup. Albert Pujols, who needs nine hits to reach 3,000 for his career, was the DH Saturday night while Jefry Marte played first base.

Scioscia said it will be normal for Ohtani to throw bullpens on the same day that he's in the lineup as a DH.

The manager said Ohtani's routine could evolve.

''Absolutely. There's no doubt that there's a flexibility built into this,'' Scioscia said. ''It's the first time we're all going through this, Shoehei included. As we're getting some experience as to what he needs and what's going to make him the best player and the most productive player, obviously we'll adjust from it. I think it's a good starting point. We will certainly use all the information that we gather from him playing and pitching and hitting and we can always make adjustments. I'd be surprised if there weren't any adjustments. I think it's a real good template that has a lot of historical data from what he did in Japan that's applied to it. And I think we're going to adjust however we have to. We'll be flexible.''

Ohtani is hitting .342 with three homers and 11 RBIs. On the mound, he's 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA with 19 strikeouts and four walks.

Scioscia also said that if Ohtani starts as a pitcher in interleague play in an NL ballpark, that he won't necessarily be locked into hitting ninth.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy was impressed with Ohtani's two singles Friday night. The first was starter Jeff Samardzija and the second was off lefty reliever Josh Osich.

''Tell you what, he's got a nice swing,'' Bochy said. ''He gets that foot down early and he's ready to go. He's a great athlete. There's no getting around it. This guy can run, throw, hit, hit with power.''

              • Red Sox lose consecutive games for 1st time
                April 22, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Khris Davis hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer off David Price with two outs in the eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics beat Boston 4-1 on Sunday, to deal the Red Sox consecutive losses for the first time under new manager Alex Cora.

Boston had won its first six series before losing two of three at the Coliseum, where they were no-hit Saturday by Sean Manaea. They still have the best record in the majors at 17-4.

Davis drove in all four runs for the A's, and Blake Treinen (1-1) retired five batters to win. Price (2-2) allowed four runs and nine hits in 7 2/3 innings.

                YANKEES 5, BLUE JAYS 1

Gleyber Torres went 0 for 4 with a strikeout, double-play grounder, popup and flyout in his big league debut, and the youthful Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 on Sunday when New York used a starting lineup that didn't include a player 30 or older for the first time since Sept. 29, 1989.

Luis Severino (4-1) allowed three hits and struck out six in seven innings, and David Robertson and Aroldis Chapman finished the four-hitter.

Didi Gregorius homered, No. 9 batter Austin Romine laced a two-run double and rookie Miguel Andujar raised his average to .308 with a career-high four hits, including an RBI double, to help the Yankees take three of four in the series.

Jaime Garcia (2-1) gave up four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Blue Jays (13-8) lost consecutive games for the first time since opening the season with two home losses to the Yankees.

                GIANTS 4, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Brandon Belt hung in for a 21-pitch, 12-minute, 45-second at-bat before flying out and later homered.

Belt fouled off 11 straight pitches and 16 in all from rookie right-hander Jaime Barria (1-1) in the first inning in the majors' longest at-bat since records began in 1988. Belt singled and scored in the third and launched a leadoff homer against Blake Parker in the fifth. Belt saw 38 pitches in his first three at-bats, then hit the first pitch his last two times up.

Johnny Cueto (2-0) allowed two hits in six shutout innings. Hunter Strickland got his third save when Ian Kinsler flied out with runners on the corners.

Shohei Ohtani batted cleanup for the first time and went 1 for 4.

                DODGERS 4, NATIONALS 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Cody Bellinger followed Yasmani Grandal's two-run double with a tying RBI double in the sixth, and Corey Seager drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of Los Angeles' sixth win in seven games.

The Dodgers were largely dominated by Jeremy Hellickson until they erased a three-run deficit with three big hits from their patchwork lineup. Los Angeles then went ahead after Austin Barnes was hit by a pitch from Trevor Gott (0-1). Barnes advanced to third on Chris Taylor's single and scored on Seager's fly.

Josh Fields (1-0) survived a rocky seventh inning for the Dodgers (10-10), who got back to .500 after a rough start for the defending NL champions.

Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his first save since April 10 and his third of the season

                CUBS 9, ROCKIES 7

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado was initially called safe by umpire Cory Blaser when he tried to score on a bases-loaded pitch that bounced to the backstop, then was ruled out when a video review concluded reliever Brandon Morrow applied the tag on a throw from catcher Willson Contreras.

Cubs star Kris Bryant was hit on the head with a 96 mph pitch from German Marquez in the first inning and left the game. Cubs spokesman Peter Chase said Bryant passed tests and had no sign of a concussion.

Tommy La Stella, Kyle Schwarber and Victor Caratini hit RBI singles later in the first off Marquez (1-2). Javier Baez, who had three RBIs, made it 4-0 in the second with his seventh homer and Jason Heyward had a two-run single in the third for a 6-0 lead.

Jose Quintana (2-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Morrow got his fourth save.

PHOENIX (AP) - Patrick Corbin (4-0) struck out 11 in six innings, and Arizona (15-6) became the first team since San Francisco in 2003 to win its first seven series.

Nick Ahmed hit a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks. Archie Bradley struck out Jose Pirela with a runner on third for his second save.

Rookie Joey Lucchesi (2-1) gave up four runs and five hits.

                INDIANS 7, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jose Ramirez homered twice and drove in three runs, and Corey Kluber (3-1) won his third straight start, allowing three runs and six hits in seven-plus innings.

Manny Machado hit two solo homers for Baltimore, his third multihomer game this season. Baltimore (6-16) has lost ninth of 10.

                PHILLIES 3, PIRATES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Altherr hit a winning single in the 11th after Andrew Knapp's opposite-field triple off the left-field wall against Rich Rodriguez (0-1). Philadelphia swept a four-game series against Pittsburgh for the first time since May 12-15, 1994.

Yacksel Rios (3-0) pitched a scoreless inning, stranding two runners. The Phillies have won 13 of 16 since a 1-4 start and are seven games over .500 for the first time since they were 24-17 on May 18, 2016.

Caleb Smith (0-3) struck out a career-high 10 in six innings for Miami, which outhit Milwaukee 6-4.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Kolten Wong and Paul DeJong homered to back Miles Mikolas (3-0), who yielded two runs - one earned - and five hits over seven innings. St. Louis has won eight of nine overall and 11 in a row over the Reds.

Cincinnati has lost five in a row and 13 of 14. The Reds have the worst record in the majors at 3-18 and are 0-3 since firing manager Bryan Price and replacing him with Jim Riggleman.

Luis Castillo (1-3) gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings.

                RANGERS 7, MARINERS 4

He allowed consecutive hits starting the inning, but the game ended when shortstop Jurickson Profar made a tough catch of a popup in shallow left field.

Monday’s List of 13: More football notes as Draft Week starts……

                    13) The 2018 schedule was announced Thursday night, the best option out of 59,031 possible schedules that the league’s computer produced.

                    12) FOX is doing Thursday Night Football this season; apparently they asked the NFL to move some of their prime Sunday afternoon games to Thursday, and that happened.

Vikings-Rams, Packers-Seahawks, Eagles-Giants, Saints-Cowboys are all Thursday night games this year. FOX’s Thursday night ratings should be pretty good.

                    11) No teams will play on the road following a Monday Night Football road game; that happened five times last year, and teams complained about it.

                    10) Eagles-Jaguars play a 9:30am ET game in London, which means the poor ticket takers in Las Vegas casinos (6:30am there) probably have to be at work by 5:30am. No bueno.

This is the first time ever the defending Super Bowl champ will play in England.

                    9) Jets-Lions is a Week 1 Monday night game in large part because Ed Sheeran has a Sunday concert at Ford Field that week. Sheeran’s concert tour forced 8 NFL games off of Sunday dates.

                    8) According to Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, last year the Giants were not pleased with their schedule because they felt they were too often playing teams more rested than they were- they were -22 in “rest disparity”, at one point playing consecutive games vs teams coming off their bye week. This year, no team’s rest disparity is worse than -11. (Giants’ is -7)

                    7) NFL will play two Saturday games in Week 16—but they haven’t been announced yet. That is also Christmas week, but the four teams won’t be told their games will be played on December 22 until Halloween or so. Those two games will undoubtedly involve contending teams.

                    6) Packers-Patriots in Week 9 is just the second meeting between Rodgers-Brady as starting QB’s. Green Bay beat the Patriots 26-21 in 2014, with Rodgers throwing for 368 yards, but he was hurt when New England beat the Packers in 2010.

Rodgers didn’t start in the 2006 Packer-Patriot meeting, but replaced an injured Brett Favre in 2nd quarter of an easy New England win.

                    5) Jon Gruden has been out of coaching for nine years; he’s spent most of that time on Monday Night Football, so fitting that his return to the sidelines is the Week 1 Monday Night Football nightcap against the Rams in Oakland.

                    4) If you were advising Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield and he told you he wanted a camera crew to follow him around for four months before the draft, would you have told him that was a good idea or a bad idea?

Apparently there is going to be a documentary made about Mayfield’s path from his bowl game last January to the NFL Draft in Dallas. Would be fun to know what his prospective employers think of that.

                    3) “Every game I’ve seen him play, he’s been the best player on the field.”

Thats an AFC GM talking about Louisville QB Lamar Jackson, who to me will be the most interesting player to follow at the draft Thursday-Saturday.

                    2) According to a video on NFL.com, Green Bay has the toughest schedule in 2018 and Houston has the easiest. Of course, injuries will drastically change all that as time goes on, but the NFL Network has to have something to talk about between now and the draft on Thursday.

                    1) Denver Broncos signed free agent punter Marquette King, so they traded their old punter Riley Dixon to the Giants for a future conditional draft pick.

                    • Preview: Angels (14-7) at Astros (15-7)
                      Game: 1
                      Venue: Minute Maid Park
                      Date: April 23, 2018 8:10 PM EDT

HOUSTON -- Last Sunday night, after Texas Rangers veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon carried a perfect game into the eighth inning at Minute Maid Park, the Houston Astros closed that three-game series having scored a total of nine runs and continued what was a sluggish stretch offensively.

The Astros (16-7) will return home for the opener of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday riding a six-game winning streak and with their offense in a groove.

After dropping the opener of a seven-game road trip through Seattle and Chicago, a 2-1 loss that represented the third time in six games they scored one run, the Astros caught a rhythm. Houston has scored 47 runs during its win streak and is in first place in the American League West.

That the Astros righted themselves on the road is no surprise.

Last season their 53-28 road record was tied for the best in the majors along with the Indians, and Houston averaged more runs per game on the road (6.2) than it did at Minute Maid Park (4.9), where the Astros finished 48-33.

In the postseason, Houston clinched the AL Division Series and World Series on the road.

When the offense works in concert with the exceptional pitching, the results are favorable.

"We can play all facets of the game," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "We are a tough team to match up with.

"Being the aggressive team that puts up pretty good at-bats, some explosive innings, and great pitching."

The Houston rotation posted a 0.95 ERA during the road trip, surrendering five earned runs over 47 innings. Left-hander Dallas Keuchel suffered the lone loss on the trip, doing so while posting a complete game and allowing just two runs on six hits and one walk over eight innings.

Right-hander Gerrit Cole (2-0, 0.96 ERA) will seek to maintain that momentum for the Astros.

Cole is 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA over two career starts against the Angels. In his previous outing against Los Angeles, Cole allowed three runs on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a 5-4 loss on June 5, 2016 at PNC Park while pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Left-hander Tyler Skaggs (2-1, 3.98 ERA) earns the starting assignment for the Angels (14-8), who have lost five of six including a 4-2 setback on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants.

Skaggs is 3-2 with a 3.26 ERA over seven career starts against the Astros.

He faced Houston twice last season but did not factor in the decision in either game, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts over five innings in a 7-6 win at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on Aug. 26, and four runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts over five innings in a 7-5 road victory in his penultimate appearance of the season on Sept. 24.

The Angels are slumping like the Astros were a week ago, having been limited to two runs or less in five of six games, with their 4-3 win on Saturday serving as the exception.

Mike Trout homered for the third straight game, but the Angels were no-hit until the sixth inning in a 4-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants Sunday. Shohei Ohtani batted cleanup for the first time and was 1-for-4 in place of a resting Albert Pujols, who is eight hits shy of 3,000.

Pujols is expected to return to the starting lineup as the designated hitter. So is shortstop Andrelton Simmons, who exited Sunday's game after being hit in the right forearm.

"It's a little sore, but it's not that bad," Simmons told reporters. "I could throw, but not easily. I'm waiting for the welling to go down, but I think I should be ready to go if they let me."

The Angels raced to a 13-3 start and led Houston by 2 1/2 games in the division. The roles have reversed.

                      • Torres called up, and more top prospects could soon follow
                        April 23, 2018

The latter part of April is a good time to check in on some of baseball's top prospects.

The New York Yankees hope they have a good one in Gleyber Torres.

Torres made his anticipated debut for the Yankees on Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays, and although the 21-year-old infielder went hitless , his arrival drew plenty of attention. Torres' promotion occurred late enough that he isn't eligible for free agency until after the 2024 season. It made sense for his major league debut to come now, especially after he hit .347 at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

A few other top prospects remain in the minors, but they're also worth keeping an eye on:

-Ronald Acuna, Braves. Acuna hit .432 in 44 spring training at-bats for Atlanta this year, and although he started slowly at Triple-A Gwinnett, a three-hit day Sunday lifted his average to .217.

-Nick Senzel, Reds. Cincinnati is a major league-worst 3-18 and already fired manager Bryan Price . In other words, the addition of a top prospect could certainly improve the mood around, but Senzel hasn't done much to force the issue. The 22-year-old third baseman is hitting .241 at Triple-A Louisville.

-Michael Kopech and Eloy Jimenez, White Sox. These two jewels of Chicago's system are certainly on the radar for White Sox fans. Kopech has a 2.40 ERA through three starts at Triple-A Charlotte. Jimenez is 0 for 10 in three games for Double-A Birmingham - but the outfielder hit .353 in 18 games at that level last year. He's been recovering from a pectoral strain.

-Willy Adames, Rays. Tampa Bay acquired Adames when it traded ace David Price in 2014. He hit well in spring training and is now batting .300 for Triple-A Durham. He spent last season at Triple-A as well, so he's built up plenty of experience at the top level of the minors.

Some more developments from around the majors:

                        TAKING ADVANTAGE

Milwaukee has won six in a row - all against the last-place Reds and Marlins - to pull within percentage points of first-place St. Louis in the NL Central. The Brewers lost All-Star closer Corey Knebel to a hamstring injury earlier this month, but they nonetheless have the second-best bullpen ERA in the National League, behind NL West-leading Arizona.

                        FOR THE BIRDS

Baltimore lost 87 games last season and allowed the second-most runs in the American League. Pitching is still an issue for the Orioles, but now they're also hitting a major league-worst .215. The result is a 6-16 record that already has Baltimore 11 + games out of first place in the AL East.

                        HIGHLIGHT

Yes, that really happened: San Francisco's Brandon Belt kept hitting foul balls against Angels right-hander Jaime Barria before finally lining out to right field on the 21st pitch of the plate appearance Sunday.

The interminable at-bat occurred in the first inning. Belt faced Barria again in the third and singled on the eighth pitch of that plate appearance. Barria was lifted that inning after 77 pitches.

Honorable mention highlight: Bryce Harper's broken-bat home run for Washington on Monday night against the New York Mets.

                        LINE OF THE WEEK

The first no-hitter of the 2018 season went to Oakland left-hander Sean Manaea, who blanked Boston 3-0 on Saturday night. Manaea struck out 10 and walked two in what was also his first complete game in 58 big league starts.

Forget Fenway Park - David Price and the Boston Red Sox are feeling every bit at home at the Flush Factory. And in Houston, George Springer and the Astros are just as likely to be talking Boogie Bombs as balls and strikes.

Why is Xander Bogaerts making an L with his fingers and dancing on second base? Who's the Ninja on Phil Hughes' Twitter feed? What's with Derek Fisher and llamas?

Just like gamers everywhere, major leaguers have fallen hard for the Fortnite craze. And while it's not how John McGraw would teach teamwork, Port-a-Forts and Slurp Juice may be the biggest thing bonding some big leaguers.

''We play all day, every day,'' Springer said.

Fortnite Battle Royale is perhaps the world's most popular video game, and baseball players are among its most voracious players. The game pits up to 100 competitors in a last-man-standing scenario, letting them mine materials from an ever-shrinking map while hunting down enemies with a variety of weapons. Working in teams is often critical, which is how the World Series champion Astros ended up with a 12-man crew which plays almost nightly at the team hotel on the road.

Springer and Houston's other outfielders have even been celebrating victories by performing dances from the game - the trio forms a circle, throws their hands in the air and quickly moves their feet, a move Fortnite apparently adapted from an episode of Seinfeld.

Bogaerts was doing something similar on opening day, celebrating a double by doing the "Take The L " dance - a popular Fortnite taunt.

The Red Sox have a Fortnite squad that covers an array of ages. The 32-year-old Price was a little late to the game - he heard teammates talking about it near the end of spring training and privately tested it out before trying to break into the team's Playstation rotation. He practiced a bit with J.D. Martinez, a former Tigers teammate who signed with Boston as a free agent this winter, then got into melees with reliever Carson Smith.

''We play together at the field, at the hotel on the road or at home whenever we get home from the field,'' Price said. ''It's something that's kind of taken over.''

Craig Kimbrel, Chris Sale, Matt Barnes and Eduardo Rodriguez have helped them round out a regular Fortnite crew. Sale even bought himself an Xbox just to play the game.

''Everybody's kind of in on it,'' Barnes said. ''It gives us something to do outside the field. It's fun and we're still hanging out.''

Barnes spoke while watching Rodriguez play Fortnite in the Fenway Park clubhouse before a game. He and Sale provided commentary on Rodriguez's battle - at one point, Barnes cut off the interview to warn ''watch it Eddie.''

Turns out, hypercompetitive men in their 20s and 30s make the perfect audience for the 100-person showdowns. And at least in Boston, it's been great at bringing players together off the field.

''It is,'' Martinez said. ''In a weird way, we all play video games, but we play with each other.''

Even the sport's aging veterans are getting in on the act. That includes 34-year-old Dustin Pedroia, an elder statesman among the Red Sox.

''I personally haven't played with Dustin, but I understand he's in the mix,'' said Smith, supposedly the best player in Boston's clubhouse. ''He's starting to figure it out.''

Hughes, a starting pitcher with the Minnesota Twins, legitimized his Fortnite credentials in January by beating Ninja, one of the top Fortnite players in the world, and posting video of it to Twitter. Meanwhile in Houston, Jake Marisnick is the unquestioned king of the Tilted Towers, though Alex Bregman isn't far behind.

Fisher, on the other hand, might be the most entertaining.

''Fish is loud,'' Springer said. ''Especially if he finds a llama. Don't let Fish find a llama.''

''Don't let me find a llama,'' Fisher confirmed.

The craze has gone far beyond baseball. Fortnite was a hot topic around the Final Four, and Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews says he rarely leaves his apartment on days off because he's so consumed. Indiana Pacers player Lance Stephenson wore custom Fortnite shoes during a game this month, and NBA stars Ben Simmons and Karl-Anthony Towns have even connected with fans by live streaming their Battle Royales.

Live streams of Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - a similar game, often referred to as PUBG - have become a fascinating insight for fans into the lives of their favorite athletes. Tens of thousands of people have tuned into Simmons' sessions on Twitch, but it's not just superstars drawing eyeballs. Brewers minor leaguer Brett Phillips has had thousands of people view his Twitch feed, which has included cameos from friend and former teammate Lance McCullers Jr. of the Astros. Phillips' Triple-A teammate Tim Dillard has even gotten over 30,000 views on a Fortnite parody video starring former big leaguer Quintin Berry filmed around the Colorado Springs clubhouse.

The next time one of those Sky Sox crack a big league roster, they might find life isn't so different between the minors and the majors.

''It's just a bunch of dudes playing video games,'' Springer said.

                            First Time

The Boston Red Sox lost on Sunday in Oakland just one day after being no-hit by Sean Manaea of the Athletics. It's the first time the first-place Red Sox have dropped consecutive games this season. The Red Sox had won six straight series to open the season before falling to the A's of all teams. Despite the consecutive losses the BoSox still sit atop the majors with the record in baseball at 17-4. They're led by Mookie Betts who leads the majors with a .366 batting average, and Rick Porcello is back to his 2016 form with four wins to tie for the lead in baseball.

                            Kapler's Law

Manager Gabe Kapler got off to a rough start in the City of Brotherly Love, highlighted by his decision to make a call to the bullpen in the first week of the season when the reliever wasn't warmed up. The home-plate umpire and crew chief Jerry Layne felt so bad for reliever Hoby Milner that he allowed him extra warm-up pitches because he feared for the pitcher's health. Kapler has come a long way in a short time, as the Phillies are in second place in the NL East, a half-game back of the New York Mets. Philly also has four straight wins while going 9-1 in 10 games at home and they have a plus-33 run differential, second in the NL and fourth in the majors.

                            Looking Ahead

                            Monday, April 23

The Angels and Astros hook up in the series opener on Monday night. The Halos have rattled off victories in nine consecutive road outings, and they're 6-0 in their past six road games against a right-handed starting pitcher. L.A. counters with LHP Tyler Skaggs, and the team is 5-1 in his past six outings and 5-0 in his past five against division foes. However, they're just 1-4 in his past five when opening a new series. The Astros have won 25 of the past 31 at home, and they're 16-5 in their past 21 against divisional opponents. They have won four straight with Gerrit Cole on the hill, and they're 6-2 in their past eight against left-handed starting pitchers. Houston should have the upper hand. While the Halos are 5-2 in their past seven with Skaggs facing the Astros, they have won just 10 of their past 32 trips to H-Town, and they're 2-5 in their past seven tries overall against Houston.

The San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies are playing another series in Denver, their second of the season in the Mile High City this month. The Padres have won just twice in their past 12 against teams with a winning overall record, and they're 5-14 in their past 19 tries vs. RHP. In addition, they're 0-4 in their past four with Bryan Mitchell on the bump. The Rox counter with Chad Bettis, and they're 15-2 in his past 17 at Coors Field against teams with a losing overall mark. They're also 24-9 in his past 33 outings overall, while going 7-3 in his past 10 inside the division.

                            Weather Report

The game between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds appears to be in serious jeopardy with rain in the forecast all day. The forecast for first pitch call for an 80 percent chance of rain, decreasing to 55 percent by 8pm ET. However, the chances of rain are still up to 45 percent by 11pm ET, so there is a good chance this game is washed away.

Precipitation isn't a problem in Baltimore for the wraparound series finale between the Orioles and Cleveland Indians but wind will play a factor. In fact, the winds will be blowing from 9-12 mph directly out to left field, so the 'over' could be in play. Winds will also be howling in the Mile City City, but it will be blowing directly in from left-center field to home plate from 10-14 mph for the game between the Padres and Rockies. Winds will also be whipping by the bay at AT&T Park when the Washington Nationals and San Francisco Giants do battle. The forecast calls for winds at 12-15 mph early in the game, dying down slightly to 10-12 mph by the end of the contest.

                            Tuesday, April 24

The Red Sox and Blue Jays will open a series at the Skydome (OK, Rogers Centre), and the BoSox look to shake off their first consecutive games losing streak of the season. They're still 17-4 overall, and 21-6 in their past 27 games inside the division. They're also 28-11 in their past 39 games after a scheduled day off. In addition, Boston is still 9-2 across the past 11 on the road. Toronto has rattled off wins in seven of their past eight at home while going 13-6 in the past 19 overall. They have won four of JA Happ's past five assignments, and they're 17-6 in his past 23 starts at home against teams with a winning overall mark. Boston has won 19 of their past 26 trips to Ontario, and they're 12-5 in the past 17 meetings overall between these AL East Division rivals.

The A's and Rangers hook up in Arlington, and Oakland rolls out Andrew Triggs as they try and stay hot. They entered Monday's game 6-1 in the past seven after a series win against the red-hot Red Sox. The A's are 4-0 in Triggs' past four starts against teams with a losing record, and 5-1 in his past six inside the division. They're also 6-2 in his past eight working on five days of rest. For the Rangers, it's the complete opposite. The team is 1-6 in the past seven with Cole Hamels toeing the slab, and they're 1-4 in his past five starts inside the division. Oakland entered Monday's series opener just 2-6 in their past eight trips to Texas. The 'under' is 18-7-2 in the past 27 between these AL West foes.

The Marlins and Dodgers do battle at Chavez Ravine, and the Marlins look for improvement against right-handed pitchers. They entered the week just 1-6 in their past seven against RHP, and they'll be trying to solve Kenta Maeda. L.A. is 16-5 in Maeda's past 21 starts at home, and 8-3 in his past 11 against teams with a losing overall record. The Dodgers are also 7-1 in his past eight at home against teams with a losing overall mark. The over could be in play all series long, going 33-13-5 in the past 51 meetings in L.A., and 43-18-6 in the past 67 overall between these coast-to-coast opponents.

                            Weather Report

On Tuesday, weather will again rear its ugly head and affect plenty of games. Rain is in the forecast all day for Cleveland, so the game between the Indians and Chicago Cubs is likely to be rained out. The forecast calls for rain at 50 percent of higher from 6pm ET through the wee hours, so expect a delay and a potential day-night doubleheader on Wednesday. In other interleague action, the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates are going to be wet, too, as rain chances range from 40-50 percent all evening long.

Rain will also be looming in the Bronx, although the game between the Twins and Yankees should at least be able to get underway. However, by 9pm the rain chances bump up over 60 percent and it won't let up anytime soon.

In the NL, rain is also in the picture in Cincinnati again, with a 50 percent chance of showers at game time. The percentages drop off to around 30 percent by 8pm, so while wet and potentially delayed, the game should still get in eventually. In Philadelphia there isn't as much optimism. The Diamondbacks-Phillies game has a 55 percent chance of rain at first pitch and it only gets worse, increasing to 90 percent by 9pm and not letting up until Wednesday. Look for a postponement there. The same holds true down the road in Baltimore, as the Rays and O's are likely to be rained out with showers in the forecast all day. Since these teams play so frequently being division mates, a doubleheader is likely down the road.

Winds will be the same as Monday night in Denver and San Francisco. It will be blowing in at Coors Field to potentially hold down the offense, coming in from 10-13 mph from left-center field to home plate, while the winds howl out to the power alley in left field in San Francisco from 12-16 mph.

                            Wednesday, April 25

                            Weather Report

For the afternoon action on the south side of Chicago, the winds will be blowing from left to right at Guaranteed Rate Field from 16-20 mph. Rain and wind are in the offing in the Bronx, with rain and storms in the forecast for the first half of the game at 40-60 percent with winds gusting from 10-13 mph in directly from center field to home plate.

In Pittsburgh the winds will be blowing directly from home plate to center field at PNC Park going anywhere from 10-12 mph, while in Baltimore the winds will be blowing out to Boog's BBQ in right field at the same rate of velocity as Pittsburgh. The good news is that the rains should be coming to a close right around the time of first pitch.

If there is a day-night doubleheader in Cleveland, rain will likely hinder the early game. There is a 30-40 percent chance of rain all the way up until 6pm before the forecast calls for clearing around 7pm. The winds will be roaring from 12-15 mph in from left-center field to home plate all afternoon and evening.

                            • LEADING OFF: Dodgers' Buehler makes 1st start, Bryant rests
                              April 22, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                              START HIM UP

Prized Dodgers prospect Walker Buehler makes his first big league start, taking on visiting Miami. The 23-year-old righty reached the majors last September and had a 7.71 ERA in eight relief appearances. Buehler was a first-round draft pick in 2015. He's getting this chance because starter Rich Hill is on the disabled list with a cracked fingernail.

                              REST HELPS

The Cubs are off, meaning slugger Kris Bryant gets to heal from a beaning. He had a cut above his eye, caused by his sunglasses, after a fastball from Colorado's German Marquez hit off helmet Sunday. The team said Bryant passed tests and had no sign of a concussion. The 2016 NL MVP is hitting .319 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. The Cubs next play on Tuesday night at Cleveland.

''As good as can be expected,'' manager Joe Maddon said after Chicago's 9-7 win. ''I haven't heard the word concussion yet, so hopefully good.''

                              ASCENDING ASTROS

Fresh off sweeping a three-game series from the White Sox and outscoring them 27-2, the World Series champion Astros return home to face the Angels, having won six in a row. Gerrit Cole is 2-0 with a 0.96 ERA over four starts in his first season for Houston, striking out 41 in 28 innings. Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to pitch the second game of the series on Tuesday night for Los Angeles.

                              STREAKS

Twins star Brian Dozier has set a team record with a 16-game hitting string to begin a season. He passed the 15-gamers by Kirby Puckett (1994) and Josh Willingham (2012). Dating to last year, Dozier has a hit in 23 straight games. He'll try to extend the streak when Minnesota opens a series against Masahiro Tanaka at Yankee Stadium. ... Indians righty Carlos Carrasco is 9-0 with a 1.75 ERA over his past 11 starts since Aug. 27. He pitches the series finale at Baltimore.
