    • Jose Martinez drives in 6 runs as Cards pound Reds
      April 12, 2018

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Shohei Ohtani hit a bases-loaded triple in Los Angeles' five-run seventh inning, helping the Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Thursday night for their fifth straight victory.

Ian Kinsler homered on his first swing in his return to the Angels' lineup, and Nick Tropeano (1-0) pitched shutout ball into the seventh for his first major league win since 2016.

Los Angeles has won eight of nine.

Ohtani drove a 1-2 pitch from Brandon Maurer to right-center, scoring Kole Calhoun, Andrelton Simmons and Luis Valbuena. The Royals walked Ohtani intentionally in the sixth with first base open and Simmons on second.

Ohtani is tied with Mike Trout for the Angels' lead with 11 RBIs in 26 at-bats. Trout went 3 for 4 with his fifth home run.

Kinsler led off the game with a home run for the 47th time in his career, driving a 1-0 pitch from Ian Kennedy (1-1) out to left. Kinsler missed the previous 11 games with an adductor strain.

      RED SOX 6, YANKEES 3

BOSTON (AP) - Rick Porcello pitched seven scoreless innings and Mookie Betts drove in two runs, leading Boston to the victory.

Porcello (3-0) stayed in after a 45-minute rain delay and was working on a no-hitter before Aaron Judge's leadoff double in the seventh. The 2016 AL Cy Young Award winner struck out six and walked none in his third straight win to begin the year.

Andrew Benintendi and Mitch Moreland each had two hits and drove in a run. Craig Kimbrel got three outs for his fourth save.

Yankees starter Sonny Gray (1-1) was pulled after a leadoff single by Moreland in the fourth. It was the seventh hit allowed by Gray, who also threw three wild pitches and hit a batter. He was charged with six runs and seven hits.

      CARDINALS 13, REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jose Martinez drove in six runs and Yadier Molina homered in his return from a one-game suspension, powering St. Louis to a victory that left Cincinnati mired in its worst start since 1955.

The Cardinals homered a season-high four times while piling up a season high in runs. The Reds helped by walking 11 batters, three of them with the bases loaded.

The Reds fell to 2-10, the worst record in the majors and their worst start since an identical mark in 1955.

Infielder Cliff Pennington pitched the ninth for Cincinnati and gave up a pair of walks and Martinez's second RBI single of the game.

Paul DeJong's solo shot deep into the upper deck in center off Austin Brice (0-2) snapped a 4-4 tie in the sixth. Martinez and Molina hit back-to-back drives in the seventh, when St. Louis put it away with seven runs.

Michael Wacha (2-1) went five innings and extended his streak of beating Cincinnati.

      TWINS 4, WHITE SOX 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Joe Mauer reached 2,000 career hits, Jose Berrios struck out 11 in seven innings and Minnesota earned its third straight win.

Mauer had two hits and three RBIs.

Berrios (2-1) tied a career high with 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits for the second time in three starts this season. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.67 ERA in five starts against Chicago.

Lucas Giolito (0-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings for the White Sox, giving up four runs, three earned, and five hits with five walks. He struck out three.

      PIRATES 6, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Gregory Polanco homered twice to help back a third straight solid start by Trevor Williams, and Pittsburgh pulled away from Chicago.

Francisco Cervelli lined a three-run shot in the seventh off Justin Wilson as Pittsburgh scored four times in the inning to break open a tight game. Adam Frazier also went deep for Pittsburgh, which improved to 9-3.

Kyle Schwarber homered, doubled and singled for three of the Cubs' seven hits. Chicago's Ian Happ had his first two-hit game this season.

Williams (3-0) was a bit better than Kyle Hendricks (0-1) in what began as a pitchers' duel following Chicago's 13-5 rout of Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.

Williams yielded one run and four hits through six innings. Hendricks allowed two runs and five hits in six innings.

      ROCKIES 5, NATIONALS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - DJ LeMahieu hit two home runs and drove in a career-high four runs, powering Colorado to the victory.

Chad Bettis (2-0) allowed one run and three hits over seven innings as Colorado took the opener of a four-game series.

LeMahieu's four-hit game matched a career high. He provided most of the offense, starting with the game's first at-bat.

The second baseman sent Washington starter Gio Gonzalez's third pitch into the Colorado bullpen in left.

LeMahieu added an RBI double in the second off Gonzalez (1-1). In the sixth, he smacked a two-run homer to center off Matt Grace to make it 5-1.

      INDIANS 9, TIGERS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Francisco Lindor hit a leadoff homer and drove in three runs, helping Cleveland to its 11th consecutive victory against the Tigers.

The Indians completed a four-game series sweep and improved to 31-10 against their AL Central rival since 2016. Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer, and Trevor Bauer (1-1) struck out seven while pitching seven innings of two-run ball.

Lindor, who entered the night batting .184 with one RBI, hit his fourth career leadoff homer off Michael Fulmer (1-2). He added a two-run double in the second and also scored three of Cleveland's season-high nine runs.

Jason Kipnis and Bradley Zimmer each had three hits for the Indians. Kipnis added two RBIs and Zimmer robbed Dixon Machado of an extra-base hit with a diving catch in the seventh.

      GIANTS 7, PADRES 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chris Stratton and Derek Law combined on a one-hitter, and Hunter Pence's broken-bat, two-run bloop single highlighted a three-run first inning for San Francisco.

Stratton (1-1) kept the Padres mostly off the bases through seven innings. He allowed their only hit, a one-out single in the third by pitcher Clayton Richard, who was hitting for starter Bryan Mitchell (0-2). Richard was doubled off after Franchy Cordero lined out to shortstop.

Stratton struck out four, walked three and retired his final eight batters. The only time a runner got into scoring position against him was when he walked Freddy Galvis and Carlos Asuaje with one out in the fifth.

Law, recalled from Triple-A Sacramento before the game, threw two perfect innings.

        • Padres vow not to get pushed around after brawl with Rockies
          April 12, 2018

SAN DIEGO (AP) Showing some fight seems to be a good thing for the rebuilding San Diego Padres.

While awaiting word on punishment from MLB for their brawl Wednesday with the Colorado Rockies, the Padres vowed not to get pushed around by anyone.

After five Padres batters were hit in six games against the Rockies this season, including Manuel Margot taking a fastball to the ribs Tuesday night and going on the disabled list, the Padres felt enough was enough.

Luis Perdomo threw a pitch behind Nolan Arenado in the third inning Wednesday and the All-Star rushed the mound, setting off a brawl that led to five ejections, including Perdomo, Arenado and San Diego catcher A.J. Ellis.

It also led to a sense of camaraderie for the Padres, who were labeled as soft by some last year when they chose not to retaliate after Anthony Rizzo of the Chicago Cubs slammed into Austin Hedges at the plate last year, sidelining the catcher for a few games. MLB determined that Rizzo violated the home plate collision rule, but didn't punish him.

Manager Andy Green wouldn't say if someone called for Perdomo's purpose pitch or if the situation simply hit critical mass.

''We'll keep stuff like that in house. That's kind of how that stuff should be handled.''

          Hedges replaced Ellis Wednesday.

''Obviously anytime a thing like that happens it brings your team together a little bit,'' Hedges said Thursday before the Padres opened a series against San Francisco. ''We definitely want to get the impression out there that we're not going to let teams run all over us. We're going to go out there and no matter who you are, we're going to be competing out there to win a ballgame no matter what it takes.

''It kind of brings your team together and that's what it did for us.''

Green said there was good and bad that came from the brawl, which sparked the Rockies to a 6-4 win.

''We got knocked off kilter yesterday, honestly,'' Green said. ''We didn't play a good half inning. We came back and played a very good rest of the ballgame ... but it took us a half inning and that half inning was five runs. You've got to be able to handle those emotions.

''It was a great experience for a young club to go through,'' Green added. ''You go through an experience like that and you understand the emotions that ensue and you understand what you've got to control. But for me I think those things are valuable to build a contender. As you go through emotions like that you learn how to handle them.''

Eric Hosmer, who joined the Padres as a free agent from the Kansas City Royals, said it was a matter of players policing the situation.

''We handled it on the field, it was done and we finished the game and moved on from it,'' he said. ''But I do think teams can become stronger from it. You're on a team, you expect to have everybody's back. When you go through something like that and see everybody having your back and seeing everybody coming together, it reassures you that it's true.''

Hosmer said Perdomo's pitch sent a message.

''We don't want to feel intimidated by anybody and I'm sure other teams don't want to feel intimidated by us. It's a bunch of competitors and you're competing at the highest level you can possibly compete on and there are going to be some times where tensions are raised a little bit and it's all part of baseball. That's the reason a lot of us are in this position, because of the intensity and competitiveness we all have.

''We all realize we're all competing at a high level out there. Guys got fired up and it was done and it was over after that.''

Right fielder Hunter Renfroe was hit on the hand in the second inning, after Colorado's Trevor Story was plunked in the first.

Renfroe said his hand was bruised but otherwise fine.

He also thinks things were settled Wednesday.

''I think everything's behind. I think everybody's good with it,'' he said. ''It's hard baseball. We're all big boys here. We can get over it and put things aside, and obviously we're here to play baseball.''

The Padres took two of three from the Rockies after losing three of four to them in San Diego last week.

The Padres return to Colorado for a three-game series April 23-25.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

            13) After scoring 19 points in his NBA debut Tuesday, 32-year old Andre Ingram played 35:00 for Lakers Wednesday, was +23, best on team.

Funny how guys who have something to prove don’t mind playing back-to-back nights, while lot of guys who already struck it rich think they’re bigger than life and get soft.

Anyway, I hope Ingram gets an invite to the Las Vegas Summer League; he’s earned it. Ingram is also throwing out the first pitch at the Dodger game tonight.

            12) Gametime temperature at Wrigley Field Thursday was 74 degrees; by the top of the 5th inning, it had dropped to 57 degrees.

            11) The mayor of New York City is a Red Sox fan? How is that freakin’ possible? Shouldn’t that disqualify him?

            10) Indiana signed 6-4 Laci Johnson to play on its women’s volleyball team; she is the daughter of Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson.

            9) Michigan grad transfer quarterback Wilton Speight will transfer to UCLA, where he will play for Chip Kelly this fall.

            8) There were four fans at the Kings-Golden Knights game Wednesday in Las Vegas sitting right by the LA bench; they were all dressed just like Elvis impersonators. Good stuff.

            7) Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy will pay for the hiring of an additional armed officer at each of the 10 public schools in the Stillwater, OK area- this will cost Gundy $35,000, from now until the end of the school year. Gundy has two school-age children.

            6) Gregg Popovich started coaching the San Antonio Spurs in 1996; since then, the Knicks have had 12 head coaches— next fall will be #13.

            5) Orlando Magic fired coach Frank Vogel, who was 54-110 in two years as coach, after going 250-181 in six years with the Pacers. It helps to have good players, which Orlando doesn’t.

            4) Doug Kern points out that the Cleveland Indians were held to four of fewer hits three games in row April 8-10, but they still won all three games, the first team to do that since the 1986 Texas Rangers. Only other team to do that was the ’63 San Francisco Giants.

            3) If you’re into fantasy football, this might help:

Since start of 2013 season, on passes thrown 20+ yards downfield, DeSean Jackson has caught passes for a total of 2,255 yards, most in NFL; next highest is TY Hilton (2,213), AJ Green (2,060) and Antonio Brown (2,040).

            2) Over the last 30 years in the NHL, the team that won the Presidents’ Cup (most points during regular season) has gone on to win the Stanley Cup only seven times.

1— By way of contrast, since 1984, only one NBA team seeded lower than #3 has won the NBA title, the 1995 Houston Rockets. LA Kings won the Stanley Cup as the #8 seed in the West a few years ago.

            • LEADING OFF: Mets try to continue fast start
              April 12, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

              NEW YORK GROOVE

Riding an eight-game winning streak that has lifted them to the top record in the majors, the surprising New York Mets try to extend the best start in franchise history to 11-1 when they open a homestand against Milwaukee. New York left-hander Steven Matz, coming off a solid outing in Washington, faces Zach Davies and the Brewers, who are 5-1 on the road. Under new manager Mickey Callaway, the Mets have six comeback wins and they wrapped up a 6-0 road trip Wednesday night in Miami.

              DARVISH DAY

Yu Darvish makes his first home start with the Chicago Cubs when they host the Atlanta Braves at Wrigley Field. Darvish also is looking for his first win since he signed a $126 million, six-year contract with Chicago in February. The Japanese right-hander pitched six innings of one-run ball in a no-decision at Milwaukee on Saturday in his previous start. Anibal Sanchez pitches for Atlanta. The 34-year-old right-hander is 3-2 with a 3.82 ERA in seven career starts against the Cubs.

              FAMILIAR FOES

Zack Greinke starts for Arizona in the opener of a three-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 34-year-old right-hander went 51-15 with a 2.30 ERA in three seasons with the Dodgers from 2013-15. He is 4-4 with a 3.74 ERA in 11 career starts against Los Angeles. Kenta Maeda makes his third appearance of the year for the Dodgers. He has struck out 12 in six scoreless innings so far this season.

              A NEW STREAK

Reds first baseman Joey Votto starts a new playing streak against the Cardinals. He was out of the starting lineup on Thursday, ending his streak of 202 consecutive games since Sept. 2, 2016. It was the longest for the Reds since Pete Rose started 370 straight games from 1973-76.

              • Friday's Diamond Notes
                April 13, 2018

Hottest team: Mets (10-1 overall, 8-0 last eight)

There were high expectations in New York this season, but for the Yankees. The forgotten little brothers in Queens have won 10 of their first 11 games, while coming off a perfect 6-0 road trip at Washington and Miami. The Mets have won all three starts made by both Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom, and were victorious in two appearances from Matt Harvey.

The only starter that has suffered a loss is Steven Matz, who takes the mound on Friday against Milwaukee. The southpaw lost his season opener against the Cardinals, 5-1 as he lasted four innings and allowed three earned runs. Matz rebounded with a solid outing as a road underdog at Washington last Saturday, scattering three hits in five innings of a 3-2 victory.

Coldest team: Reds (2-10 overall, 0-5 last five)

It’s been a tough start for Cincinnati, who dropped its fifth straight game in Thursday’s 13-4 setback to St. Louis. The Reds have allowed double-digit runs to three separate opponents this season (Nationals, Pirates, and Cardinals), while falling to 1-4 at home. Granted, the home schedule hasn’t been kind by facing Washington, Chicago, and St. Louis, but the two victories on the season came in a 1-0 victory over the Cubs and a 7-4 triumph at Pittsburgh after falling behind, 4-0.

Tyler Mahle heads to the hill for Cincinnati, as the right-hander is coming off a pair of completely different results to start the season. Mahle yielded one hit in six scoreless innings in Cincinnati’s lone home win over Chicago, but was tagged for five runs in a 5-0 setback at Pittsburgh this past Sunday. In his only career start against the Cardinals, Mahle shut down the St. Louis bats in a 6-0 victory at Busch Stadium last September by scattering four hits in five innings.

Hottest pitcher: Gerrit Cole, Astros (1-0, 0.64 ERA)

Houston pulled off one of the biggest steals last season by acquiring Justin Verlander late in the season to help solidify the rotation for a World Series title run. The Astros picked up another ace by trading for Cole from the Pirates this past offseason and it has paid off nicely so far. Cole has posted consecutive 11-strikeout performances against the Rangers and Padres, while allowing only one run in 14 innings of work. The right-hander will square off against Texas at Minute Maid Park to open up their weekend series, as the Rangers have lost four straight games.

Coldest pitcher: Marcus Stroman, Blue Jays (0-1, 8.38 ERA)

Stroman won a career-high 13 games last season, but the right-hander has stumbled through two starts in 2018. The Blue Jays fell behind the Yankees, 4-1 in Stroman’s first start, but Toronto rallied for six late runs to get him off the hook in a 7-4 win. However, Stroman didn’t receive the same fortune in his second appearance by allowing five earned runs in 4.2 innings of a 5-1 road favorite defeat at Texas. The Jays travel to Cleveland to face the streaking Indians as Stroman performed well in two starts last season by yielding one earned run in 13.2 innings against the Tribe.

Best OVER run: Yankees (8-1-1 last 10)

New York dropped to 6-7 on the season following Thursday’s 6-3 defeat at Boston. The Yankees venture to Detroit for the weekend looking to get on track against a Tigers’ squad that lost all four games at Cleveland. New York’s five-game OVER streak ended with Thursday’s push on a 9 total, but would have ended UNDER if not for the Yankees scoring three runs in the ninth inning. Jordan Montgomery gets the start for the Bronx Bombers, as both of his starts have sailed OVER the total this season.

Best UNDER run: Braves (5-0 last five)

Atlanta avoided a three-game sweep with Wednesday’s extra-innings victory at Washington. The game finished UNDER the total of 9 in spite of reaching 12 innings as the Braves put together a 5-3 win. The offense finally busted out after scoring five runs in the previous three games combined, while the pitching staff has allowed three runs or less in six of the past seven contests. The Braves continue their road trip with an afternoon affair against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Veteran Anibal Sanchez makes his second start, as he posted an UNDER in his first outing, a 3-2 loss at Colorado last Friday.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers

Los Angeles eliminated Arizona in the National League Divisional Series last season in three games en route to the pennant. The Diamondbacks grabbed early season revenge by pulling off a three-game sweep of the Dodgers at Chase Field earlier this month, while holding L.A. to a total of one run in the final two victories.

The D-backs sit atop the NL West at 9-3 after capturing their fourth series victory of the season at San Francisco. Arizona owns a perfect 4-0 record in series openers as Zack Greinke heads to the mound against his former team. Greinke is winless in a pair of starts, while coming off a 5-3 loss at St. Louis last weekend as the ace gave up five earned runs in five innings of work.

The Dodgers have stumbled out of the gate with a 4-7 record, capped off by Wednesday’s embarrassing 16-6 home defeat to the Athletics. Kenta Maeda seeks his second victory of the season as the right-hander tossed five scoreless innings and struck out 10 in a 5-0 home shutout of the Giants on March 31. Maeda spent the final month of last season pitching out of the bullpen, as the Dodgers put together a 1-4 record against the D-backs in his five starts.

                Betcha didn’t know:
The Phillies (along with the Reds) owned the worst interleague record last season at 5-15 as Philadelphia faces off with Tampa Bay this weekend. Philadelphia has won five of its past six games since a 1-4 start, as Vince Velasquez gets the ball in the opener. The Phillies have lost six of his last eight road starts dating back to last season, including a 15-2 setback at Atlanta on March 31.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-230) vs. Rangers

Biggest public underdog: Marlins (+120) vs. Pirates

Biggest line move: Angels (-125 to -145) at Royals

                        • Friday's Best Bet
                          April 13, 2018

                          Friday MLB Best Bet

                          Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Miami Marlins

After splitting a four-game set with the Chicago Cubs to open the year, the Miami Marlins are really starting to live “up” to those horribly bad expectations we all had for them this season. Miami is just 1-7 SU since that opening series and that run includes an embarrassing 20-1 loss to the Phillies.

Considering nine of their first twelve games have been at home and Miami is sitting on a 3-9 record, things are likely going to get worse once they hit the road for a long period of time, but it's not like Miami fans – if there are any remaining – really care.

Bettors should care though, as Miami will be constantly undervalued and massively faded in the betting markets with everyone knowing they are in full-blown tank mode. Only twice this year have they closed as an underdog lower then +138, and they've never been favored in any one of their 12 contests. But tonight the Marlins are in the +120 range at home and getting some solid support as they host a surprising Pirates team this year. Is belief in the Marlins warranted tonight?

Pittsburgh (-128) vs. Miami (+118); Total set at 8

This is one of those few times where the Marlins have already seen plenty of support as this number opened up in the -140 range for the Pirates. As of this writing, VegasInsider.com has Miami tickets being bet at about a 55% clip, with many more taking the +1.5 RL instead. The RL thing I don't really understand as Miami has lost all nine of their games this year by at least two runs, so why even consider laying the -140 juice on a +1.5 RL bet when you can get much more value on them to win outright. But it's also that support for Miami SU that seems a little out of sorts as well.

I'm one that hates to back “public” underdogs, and while Miami will never really be classified as a “public”play this entire season, they are shaping into one tonight. Whether it's because many believe the Marlins will turn this around soon or, and more likely, most fail to believe these 9-3 Pittsburgh Pirates are for real (which I get), money has forced oddsmakers to shift this line Miami's way. After all, Miami's record may not really be as bad as it seems as they've gone up against the Cubs, Red Sox, Phillies, and Mets so far, and all are expected to be in the playoff mix come September.

But this Pittsburgh team doesn't have to be for real in long-term prognostications to be considered a good bet tonight as I'm willing to ride this hot team here early until they cool off. We've seen it nearly every year in MLB when a team or two that wasn't expected to compete comes out with a blazing first month or two of the year before fading away late. The Pittsburgh Pirates appear to be a great candidate for one of those teams in 2018, but while the getting is good, you've got to ride it, and right now the getting is good for Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh is coming off a road series against the Cubs where they took two of three from Chicago and now hope to carry that over to South Florida over the weekend. Tonight's starter Chad Kuhl has been a weaker link in Pittsburgh's rotation so far (13 hits allowed in 10.2 IP, 5.06 ERA), but his counterpart Dillon Peters has actually been much worse (15 hits allowed in 8.2 IP, 9.35 ERA). So if this game does turn into a slugfest early, how can you not prefer the Pirates and their more talented lineup that's actually producing at a great rate right now?

Kuhl should be able to turn things around (at least a bit) sooner than later though and maybe tonight's the night that process gets kick-started. Pittsburgh is a perfect 4-0 SU in series openers this year, and come into tonight's game on a 7-1 SU run on the road dating back to last year. Kuhl has been no stranger to run support this year (8 and 4 runs scored) and considering the Marlins have only scored 4+ runs in fewer then half their games so far – and only twice since opening weekend – I would not be surprised to see 4 runs be more then enough for Pittsburgh tonight.

At around -130, I do believe the Pirates are more undervalued and under-appreciated then many may really want to believe in their hearts. This Pittsburgh team may not make it to October baseball, but they look like a playoff caliber team right now and that's more then enough for me to back them against a team that may have 50 fans in the stands and really has no interest in competing.

                          Best Bet: Pittsburgh ML -128

                          • Mets' Plawecki has broken hand, follows d'Arnaud to DL
                            April 13, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki has a broken left hand and is following Travis d'Arnaud to the disabled list.

Plawecki was hit by a pitch from the Marlins' Tayron Guerrero at Miami in the eighth inning Wednesday night. While a postgame X-ray was negative, an MRI in New York on Thursday showed a hairline fracture.

New York said before Friday's game against Milwaukee that Plawecki was being put on the DL, retroactive to Thursday. Plawecki will not need surgery.

D'Arnaud went on the disabled list Wednesday for the fifth consecutive year. He has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, and surgery is possible.

Catcher Tomas Nido was recalled from Double-A Binghamton on Wednesday, and another catcher is likely to be brought up Friday.

                              • Frazier hits 2 HRs, Mets beat Brewers 6-5 for 9th straight
                                April 14, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Todd Frazier hit his first two home runs with the Mets, and New York extended its winning streak to nine with a 6-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.

Steven Matz ended an 11-start winless streak dating to June 28 as New York improved to 11-1 under new manager Mickey Callaway, the best start in team history. The Mets are on their longest winning streak since 11 consecutive victories from April 12-23, 2015.

Frazier homered leading off the second and fourth innings against Zach Davies (0-2). He also singled and walked.

Matz (1-1), who had lost seven straight decisions, gave up four runs - three earned - and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. Jeurys Familia got three outs for his seventh save.

Ryan Braun, Travis Shaw and Hernan Perez homered for Milwaukee. Davies, a 17-game winner last year, gave up five runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

                                RED SOX 7, ORIOLES 3

BOSTON (AP) - Eduardo Nunez hit a three-run homer, Eduardo Rodriguez struck out eight over six stingy innings and Boston equaled its best start in 100 years with a win over Baltimore.

Rafael Devers went 3 for 5 and scored twice for the Red Sox, who improved to 11-2. J.D. Martinez had a pair of hits and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly during Boston's four-run first inning, which put the Red Sox in command on the way to their 11th victory in 12 games.

Boston reached 11-2 for the second time in franchise history, matching the 1918 World Series champions.

Adam Jones hit an early sacrifice fly and Manny Machado had a two-run double for the Orioles. Chris Tillman (0-3) struggled through two-plus innings.

Rodriguez (1-0) allowed one run on five hits and two walks.

                                YANKEES 8, TIGERS 6

DETROIT (AP) - Aaron Hicks hit an inside-the-park home run in the second inning, then added a solo shot over the fence in the sixth to send New York past skidding Detroit.

Hicks came up with a runner on second and hit a drive to right-center that bounced off the wall and past center fielder Leonys Martin. The ball rolled across a vacant area of turf while Hicks circled the bases for the Yankees' first inside-the-park homer since 2011.

He was able to trot home four innings later, when his homer to right cleared the wall by plenty. Hicks also homered twice on April 13 last year, against Tampa Bay.

Jordan Montgomery (1-0) allowed three runs in six-plus innings. New York's bullpen struggled to hold on, but Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the ninth for his second save.

Mike Fiers (1-1) gave up five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings for the Tigers, who have lost five straight. James McCann and Jeimer Candelario homered for Detroit.

                                ASTROS 3, RANGERS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Gerrit Cole struck out a career-high 14 in seven innings and Derek Fisher scored the go-ahead run on center fielder Drew Robinson's error in the eighth, sending Houston past Texas.

George Springer homered twice against Rangers ace Cole Hamels. Springer has three homers this season - all against Hamels.

Cole allowed two runs and three hits. The ace right-hander has 36 strikeouts in 21 innings during his first three starts with the Astros after he was acquired from Pittsburgh in an offseason trade.

Fisher came in to run for Evan Gattis after he walked with one out. Marwin Gonzalez followed with a single to center off Kevin Jepsen (0-2), and Fisher scored all the way from first after Robinson misplayed the ball.

Joe Smith (1-0) got the win and Chris Devenski worked the ninth for his first save.

Joey Gallo and Robinson Chirinos went deep for Texas.

                                ANGELS 5, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Albert Pujols homered and drove in three runs, Ian Kinsler had three hits and a sacrifice fly that scored Shohei Ohtani with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and Los Angeles rallied to beat Kansas City.

The Angels have won six straight and nine of 10. Their 12-3 start matches their best record after 15 games, set in 1979.

Zack Cozart and Ohtani, who doubled in his first at-bat, opened the eighth with singles off Justin Grimm (0-2). After Andrelton Simmons advanced the runners with a bunt, Luis Valbuena's pinch-hit single scored Cozart and moved Ohtani to third. Kinsler's fly to center drove in Ohtani.

Blake Wood (1-0) worked a spotless seventh to pick up the win. Keynan Middleton pitched the ninth for his third save.

                                ROCKIES 2, NATIONALS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Carlos Gonzalez homered and had a sacrifice fly to drive in both of Colorado's runs, leading the Rockies to their third straight victory.

Scott Oberg (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief for the win, and Wade Davis worked the ninth for his sixth save as five Rockies relievers combined for 4 1/3 hitless innings.

Bryce Harper hit a sacrifice fly for Washington, which has scored five runs while losing its last three games. Tanner Roark (1-1) allowed two runs - one earned - and three hits over six innings.

                                CARDINALS 5, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Yadier Molina homered and drove in three runs, leading St. Louis to a victory that deepened Cincinnati's worst season-opening slump since 1955.

St. Louis came into the series with a stagnant offense but broke out during two games against the worst pitching staff in the majors, piling up 18 runs and 25 hits. Molina - booed loudly in each plate appearance at Great American Ball Park - has homered in each game.

The Reds lost their sixth in a row and have the worst record in the majors at 2-11. They also lost 11 of their first 13 games in 1955.

Luke Weaver (2-0) allowed Devin Mesoraco's two-run homer while pitching into the seventh and beating the Reds for the third time in a row. Bud Norris worked the ninth for his second save.

Cincinnati's Tyler Mahle (1-2) gave up nine hits and five runs in 5 1/3 innings.

                                BRAVES 4, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Anibal Sanchez pitched three-hit ball over six innings, Preston Tucker backed him with a three-run homer and Atlanta spoiled Yu Darvish's first home start for Chicago.

Sanchez struck out six and walked one. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.29 through two starts and three appearances after signing a minor league deal in mid-March.

Tucker delivered the big blow in the fifth when he drove a long homer to right, and the Braves did all of the scoring in the inning while chasing Darvish.

The four-time All-Star got tagged for four runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. Darvish walked four and struck out four while throwing 105 pitches, and Chicago lost again after dropping two of three to the surging Pittsburgh Pirates.

                                BLUE JAYS 8, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Teoscar Hernandez made the most of his season debut, driving in the go-ahead run with a single off All-Star Andrew Miller in the seventh inning as Toronto rallied past Cleveland.

Hernandez, who was recalled earlier in the day when the Blue Jays placed third baseman Josh Donaldson on the 10-day disabled list, added an RBI double in a three-run ninth.

Steve Pearce also doubled in a pair of runs in the ninth for Toronto, which trailed 4-0 after two innings but came back against Zach McAllister (0-2) and the normally unhittable Miller.

Aledmys Diaz's three-run homer helped the Blue Jays tie it 4-4 in the fourth against starter Mike Clevinger.

Danny Barnes (1-0) pitched one inning, and three other relievers finished up for Toronto. Cleveland's five-game winning streak was snapped.

                                PHILLIES 2, RAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Jorge Alfaro hit a go-ahead single with two outs in the ninth inning and Philadelphia won its fourth straight game by beating Tampa Bay.

Alfaro's ground single to left field off closer Alex Colome (0-2) scored Scott Kingery, who doubled, for a 2-1 lead.

Edubray Ramos (1-0) got the final out in the eighth with a runner on third before Hector Neris worked the ninth for his second save.

Philadelphia tied it at 1 on Carlos Santana's RBI single in the sixth off reliever Jose Alvarado.
