      • Stanton needs one last surge to match Roger Maris' 61 homers
        September 19, 2017

MIAMI (AP) With 55 homers, Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton needs six in the final 12 games to match Roger Maris' hallowed 1961 total of 61. That means Stanton needs one more power surge.

The most prodigious, prolific home run hitter in the major leagues might also be the streakiest. His latest homer, on Monday night, snapped a 9-for-62 slump. Before that, he hit 18 homers in a 25-game span.

Stanton acknowledged last month that 61 homers is a goal because Maris' record stood for 37 years before Mark McGwire broke it during the era tainted by steroids.

There's time for Stanton to reach 61. He homered six games in a row in August. But in a sport with no clock, he's racing one.

          • MLB roundup: Cubs win seventh straight
            September 19, 2017

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Mike Montgomery took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and Chicago manager Joe Maddon won in his return to Tropicana Field as the Cubs claimed their seventh straight victory, holding the Tampa Bay Rays to one hit in a 2-1 win Tuesday.

Chicago got a solo home run from Kyle Schwarber and an RBI double from Javier Baez while limiting Tampa Bay to Brad Miller's solo home run in the sixth inning. Maddon managed the Rays for nine seasons (2006-14), guiding them to their only American League pennant in 2008.

Maddon's return and the Cubs' first appearance at Tropicana Field since 2008 resulted in a crowd of 25,046, the stadium's largest attendance since Opening Day. Chicago maintained a 3 1/2-game lead on the Brewers in the National League Central, with the two teams meeting for a four-game series in Milwaukee this weekend.

Montgomery left after six innings and 81 pitches. Pedro Strop and Carl Edwards Jr. each pitched a scoreless, hitless inning, and Wade Davis fanned all three batters in the ninth for his 32nd save.

            Red Sox 1, Orioles 0 (11 innings)

BALTIMORE -- Jackie Bradley Jr. scored on a Brad Brach wild pitch with two outs in the top of the 11th inning as Boston improved to 15-3 in extra-inning games this season.

Bradley reached when grounding into a force for the first out of the 11th against Brach (4-5), and Xander Bogaerts' groundout moved him to second. Andrew Benintendi and Mookie Betts both followed with walks, loading the bases with two outs.

Mitch Moreland came up, and Brach bounced the first pitch. The ball got past Baltimore catcher Welington Castillo, letting Bradley score easily from third. Joe Kelly (4-1) pitched a scoreless 10th inning and Matt Barnes closed it in the 11th for his first save.

            Yankees 5, Twins 2

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia pitched six solid innings as New York widened its lead in the AL wild-card race over Minnesota.

After the first pitch was delayed 65 minutes by heavy rain, Sabathia (12-5) helped the Yankees take a six-game lead over the Twins and remain three games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

Sabathia (12-5) improved to 3-0 in six starts since a brief stint on the disabled list with a right knee injury. He gave two runs on six hits. Brett Gardner also helped the Yankees win for the 14th time in 19 games with a RBI double and a run-scoring single. He finished 3-for-5.

            Brewers 1, Pirates 0

PITTSBURGH -- Domingo Santana's solo home run held up as Milwaukee edged Pittsburgh.

Santana's homer, his 26th of the season, just cleared the short wall near the left field foul pole in the fourth inning. It traveled only 338 feet and was the only damage the Brewers could muster against Pirates starter Trevor Williams (6-9).

Chase Anderson (11-3), Anthony Swarzak and Corey Knebel (37th save) combined for Milwaukee's 12th shutout of the season and second on consecutive nights as the Brewers took the series from Pittsburgh. Anderson tossed six innings of five-hit ball.

            Phillies 6, Dodgers 2

PHILADELPHIA -- Rhys Hoskins delivered a bases-clearing, two-out double in the seventh inning to lift Philadelphia past Los Angeles.

It was another stellar night at the plate for Hoskins, a 24-year-old first baseman. He went 2-for-3 with a walk and four RBIs, raising his average to .299 with 43 RBIs (and 18 home runs) in his first 39 career games.

Batting with one out in the seventh inning after Odubel Herrera drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 2-2, Hoskins worked a 10-pitch at-bat against Dodgers reliever Pedro Baez (3-6) before shooting a 97 mph fastball through the gap in left-center.

            Astros 3, White Sox 1

HOUSTON -- Jose Altuve matched his career high for home runs, and a four-man bullpen turned in an exceptional performance in Houston's victory over Chicago.

Altuve smacked an opposite-field homer off White Sox starter Lucas Giolito (2-3) with one out in the fourth inning, pulling the Astros even at 1-1 with his 24th dinger.

Houston starter Collin McHugh (3-2) pitched effectively after missing time with a right middle finger avulsion, allowing one run in five innings. Will Harris, Luke Gregerson and Chris Devenski combined to record six strikeouts over three hitless innings. Closer Ken Giles worked around a leadoff single by Tim Anderson in the ninth, striking out the side to notch his 32nd save.

            Nationals 4, Braves 2

ATLANTA -- Ryan Zimmerman's three hits were the centerpiece of an 11-hit attack and supported seven strong innings from starter Max Scherzer as Washington beat Atlanta.

Zimmerman was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. The double was his 30th of the season, the sixth time he reached that milestone. He has driven in 101 runs, the third time he surpassed 100 and nine shy of his career best.

Scherzer (15-6) rebounded nicely from his last start, when he allowed seven runs in five innings. He was sharp from the beginning Tuesday, retiring the first 11 batters he faced. He gave up two runs, five hits and one walk while striking out seven.

            Cardinals 8, Reds 7 (10 innings)

CINCINNATI -- Dexter Fowler tied the score with a solo home run in the eighth inning and drove home the go-ahead run with a double in the 10th to lift St. Louis over Cincinnati.

Juan Nicasio (4-5) earned the victory after pitching 1 1/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits. Scooter Gennett homered off Nicasio to make it a one-run game leading off bottom of the 10th. Tyler Lyons retired both batters he faced to earn his third save.

Zack Cozart hit a two-homer in the third inning for the Reds, who had their seven-game winning streak at Great American Ball Park snapped.

            Marlins 5, Mets 4 (10 innings)

MIAMI -- J.T. Realmuto hit a walk-off homer in the 10th inning as Miami rallied to defeat New York.

Realmuto's homer, off reliever Paul Sewald (0-6), was his 17th of the season. It was Realmuto's second career walk-off hit and his first career walk-off homer. Kyle Barraclough (6-2) earned the win after tossing a scoreless top of the 10th.

Former Marlins closer AJ Ramos entered the game to start the ninth and protect a 4-1 Mets lead, looking for the 100th save of his career. He gave up a solo homer to Justin Bour and RBI singles to A.J. Ellis and Ichiro Suzuki.

            Athletics 9, Tigers 8

DETROIT -- Jed Lowrie hit a go-ahead grand slam and drove in five runs, and Matt Olson homered for the fifth straight game to power Oakland past Detroit.

Lowrie also tied the franchise single-season record with his 47th double. Jason Giambi established the mark in 2001. Olson's solo shot in the second was his 15th long ball over the past 21 games and his 23rd of the year.

Santiago Casilla (4-5) tossed an inning of scoreless relief to get the win. Chris Hatcher worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, and Blake Treinen got the last three outs for his ninth save.

            Blue Jays 5, Royals 2

TORONTO -- Marcus Stroman pitched seven strong innings, and Darwin Barney homered and drove in three runs as Toronto defeated Kansas City.

Russell Martin also hit a two-run double for the Blue Jays. Roberto Osuna pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to earn his 37th save of the season.

The Royals' Mike Moustakas delivered a sacrifice fly in the seventh, and Alex Gordon hit his eighth homer of the season in the eighth against Ryan Tepera. Gordon's homer was the 5,694th in the majors this season, breaking the record set in 2000.

            • LEADING OFF: Cubs on a roll; Yankees try to gain on Red Sox
              September 20, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

              EYE ON THE PRIZE

With the playoffs right around the corner, the World Series champion Cubs are riding their longest winning streak of the season. They have a 3 1/2-game lead in the NL Central over Milwaukee and will go for their eighth straight victory when veteran lefty Jon Lester faces Tampa Bay. Lester (11-7), who lost to the Rays on July 4, has won three consecutive starts. Chicago extended its string to seven games Tuesday night with a 2-1 win in manager Joe Maddon's return to Tropicana Field. Maddon managed Tampa Bay from 2006-14. A crowd of 25,046, the largest at the ballpark since opening day, gave him a standing ovation in the middle of the first inning.

              PITCHING PLANS

Luis Severino starts for the Yankees after getting moved up two days to face Minnesota in the finale of a three-game series. New York manager Joe Girardi said the move was made to give Severino three more regular-season starts if needed as the team tries to overtake first-place Boston in the AL East. The Yankees, who have a comfortable lead in the wild-card race, trail the Red Sox by three games with 11 to play. ''Our goal is still to win the division. We've clinched nothing at this point,'' Girardi said. ''We still have a lot of work to do in front of us so it gives us the ability to start him three more times.'' Severino will be pitching on regular four days' rest. He has never faced the Twins, a potential opponent in the AL wild-card game. ''I can see their weakness and I can face all their hitters and see what I can do with their lineup,'' he said. The 23-year-old Severino is 13-6 with a 2.93 ERA and has not allowed more than one earned run in nine of 12 outings since the All-Star break. Bartolo Colon (6-13, 6.39) gets the ball for Minnesota, which is trying to hang onto the second wild-card spot.

              ACE IS UP

Chris Sale (16-7, 2.86 ERA) attempts to match his career high for wins when the Red Sox wrap up their series in Baltimore. He needs 13 strikeouts to become the first AL pitcher with 300 in a season since Pedro Martinez in 1999. Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia is expected back in the starting lineup. Pedroia was used as a pinch-hitter Tuesday night after leaving Monday's game when he fouled a ball off his nose. Designated hitter Hanley Ramirez (left arm soreness) also is likely to play, manager John Farrell said. Ramirez was out of the starting lineup for the sixth consecutive game Tuesday.

              THE LONG BALL

From here on out, every time a hitter goes deep this year it will extend a big league record. Kansas City outfielder Alex Gordon's solo shot in Toronto on Tuesday night was the 5,694th home run of this major league season, breaking the mark set in 2000 at the height of the Steroids Era. The record was broken with just less than two weeks remaining in the season. ''A pretty cool thing to be a part of,'' Gordon said. ''I didn't hit many this year, but I guess I made one count.''

              POWER SURGE

Oakland rookie Matt Olson has homered in five straight games, tying Matt Stairs (1998), Dave Kingman (1986) and George Alusik (1962) for the second-longest streak in Athletics history behind Frank Thomas' six in 2006. Olson and the A's play a matinee in Detroit. The 23-year-old first baseman has 15 home runs in his last 21 games and has hit 23 since coming up from the minors in early June. ''It's been pretty spectacular, for the amount of time he's been here and what he's done,'' manager Bob Melvin said. ''That's the kind of player you build around.''

              • Wednesday’s six-pack

                NFL trends for Week 3

                — Green Bay is 15-7-2 vs spread in their last 24 games.

                — Falcons are 9-19 in their last 28 games as a favorite.

                — Colts covered 11 of last 13 tries as a home underdog.

                — Kansas City covered seven of its last eight games.

                — Saints covered eight of last ten as a home underdog.

                — Cardinals are 3-10 vs spread in their last 13 games.

                ***************************

                Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                13) How bad have the Colts been? They’re a home underdog to Cleveland this week. Browns have been a road favorite once the last 4+ years, but over the last decade, they’re 5-2 vs spread when favored on foreign soil.

                12) A’s 1B Matt Olson homered again; he’s homered in five straight games and in 15 of his last 21 games. He looks like a keeper, both him and 3B Matt Chapman, a superior defensive player. Since August 11, Olson has 34 RBI in 36 games.

                11) Rams’ OC Greg LaFleur, 49ers’ DC Robert Saleh will match wits in Santa Clara Thursday; they were roommates as grad assistants at Central Michigan in 2004, so lot of familiarity there.

                10) Buffalo Bills didn’t have any plays longer than 15 yards at Carolina last week; the other 31 NFL teams combined for 111 plays of 20+ yards- thats 3.6 plays of 20+ yards, per team.

                9) Thru two weeks, NFL teams that are +2 or better in turnovers are 12-0.

Teams that won field position by 10+ yards are 10-1.

                8) Still can’t believe the Tennessee Volunteers allowed a 63-yard TD pass on the last play of a tied game, and with no safeties in the picture. Booster club luncheons in Knoxville must be a lot of fun this week.

                7) Pirates have scored a total of nine runs in their last seven games. No bueno.

                6) In 2013, Matt Harvey went 9-5, 2.27 in 26 starts, then missed all of 2014 with injuries; in 2015, he was 13-8, 2.71 in 29 starts. Writers in New York City were readying his plaque for Cooperstown.

In 2016-17, in 34 combined starts, Harvey is 9-16, 5.68- his WHIP this year is 1.67, which is really terrible. The plaque for Cooperstown is on hold- the Mets will tender him an offer for 2018, since he is a free agent next fall— guys in their option year tend to be rejuvenated.

                5) Pac-12 football teams are 2-9 vs spread as home favorites vs non-Pac-12 opponents so far this season…..…Conference USA road underdogs are 3-10 outside their own league.

                4) UNLV’s basketball program offered 8th grader Richard Isaacs Jr a basketball scholarship this week, after Runnin’ Rebels assistant Andre LeFleur saw him play in the invite-only EBC Las Vegas Camp at the Tarkanian Basketball Academy last weekend. LeFleur’s son was also playing in that event.

Isaacs averaged about 25 points per game playing for Becker Middle School last season, and had a few 30-point games with Vegas Elite’s 14U team during this past AAU season.

Never, ever did I think I’d be quoting middle school scoring stats, but that is today’s world.

                3) Kansas City’s Alex Gordon hit the 5,694th homer of the season last night, breaking the single-season MLB record. Scooter Gennett hit the 5,700th homer, if you keep track of stuff like that.

                2) Red Sox 1, Orioles 0 (11)— Teams played a 10-8, 11-inning game Monday night, so of course no one scored in this game until extra innings. Baseball is weird sometimes.

                1) NFL has a game from England on at 9:30am this Sunday (Ravens-Jaguars) but it isn’t on TV, just on Yahoo? Do they not want us watching the game? I mean, I’m perfectly glad to sleep thru it and check the boxscore when I normally wake up but if they put the game on TV, I’d get up, go to McDonald’s, get a nutritious breakfast and watch. If not? So be it.

Hottest team: Cubs (7-0 last seven) at Rays

The NL Central race is the only worth keeping an eye on over the final two weeks with the Cubs, Brewers, and Cardinals vying for the top spot. Chicago can’t quite distance itself from surging Milwaukee, but the defending champion Cubs are doing their best to grab the division title by winning their seventh straight game on Tuesday at Tampa Bay, 2-1. Since getting swept at home by the Brewers earlier this month, the Cubs swept the Mets with a tremendous offensive output, while allowing seven runs total in their last four victories over the Cardinals and Rays.

Jon Lester heads to the mound on Wednesday looking to stay perfect in September after winning his first three starts this month. The Cubs own a solid 6-1 record in his past seven road starts, while looking to rebound against the Rays after allowing five earned runs in a 6-5 defeat to Tampa Bay on July 4.

Coldest team: Pirates (0-7 last seven) vs. Brewers

Meanwhile, towards the bottom of the NL Central are the Pirates, who can’t even light up the scoreboard at this point. Pittsburgh has been shut out in each of its first two games against Milwaukee, even though the Bucs allowed only one run in Tuesday’s 1-0 home defeat. Since a 12-2 run in July which briefly had Pittsburgh back in the Wild Card discussion, the Pirates have won more than three straight games only once in the last two months.

Pittsburgh has been held to two runs or less during each game of this losing streak, while this current 1-12 run has come to all NL Central opponents. The only beacon of hope for the Pirates comes from the left arm of Steven Brault, who tossed six innings of one-hit ball in a 7-0 shutout of the Brewers on September 11, the last time Pittsburgh won a game.

Hottest pitcher: Luke Weaver, Cardinals (6-1, 1.89 ERA)

Since the start of August, Weaver has been the leader of this St. Louis rotation by going 6-0 in his past six outings. Weaver hasn’t allowed a run in his last two starts against the Pirates and Reds, while winning all three of his road outings. The Cardinals rallied past the Reds last night in extra innings as Weaver looks to duplicate his effort from his last start against Cincinnati when he scattered two hits and allowed one unearned run in six innings.

Coldest pitcher: Wade Miley, Orioles (8-13, 5.32 ERA)

The Red Sox have taken the first two games of their series at Baltimore in extra innings to creep closer towards another AL East championship. Miley may not be the right guy to stop the bleeding for Baltimore as the southpaw recorded only one out in his last start against the Yankees, while giving up six hits and six earned runs in a 13-5 loss. Baltimore is winless in Miley’s past three outings, but his last victory came at Boston on August 27 in a 2-1 triumph as a +140 underdog.

Biggest OVER run: Tigers (11-5 last 16)

Detroit gutted its roster over the last two months and aren’t playing for anything, as its pitching has suffered of late. The Tigers have lost each of the first two games against the Athletics, while giving up 17 runs in those defeats. For the exception of a 12-0 shutout over the White Sox on Sunday, Detroit pitching has been tagged for at least eight runs in four of the past six games. Anibal Sanchez takes the mound in the series finale against Oakland, as the OVER is 5-1 in the right-hander’s past six starts.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (10-1 last 11)

We outlined Pittsburgh’s offensive ineptness above, as the Pirates cashed their eighth UNDER in the last 10 matchups with the Brewers. In their last four home contests, Pittsburgh has scored a total of two runs, while getting shut out three times. Only twice in last 14 games have the Pirates plated four runs or more, which actually came in the two only two wins in this span. The Bucs have cashed the UNDER in three of their past four home series finales, while trying to avoid their third sweep at PNC Park this season.

Matchup to watch: Indians vs. Angels

Cleveland won for the 25th time in the last 26 games in Tuesday’s 6-3 triumph at Los Angeles to kick off its six-game road trip. The Indians last dropped a road contest one month ago in a 7-4 defeat at Kansas City on August 20, while extending their away winning streak to 12 last night. With the victory, Cleveland stayed 1 ½ games ahead of Houston for the top record in the American League.

The Angels remained 1 ½ games behind the Twins for the second Wild Card spot in the AL after Minnesota lost at New York last night. Ricky Nolasco is winless in his last five starts for the Angels, while coming off a home loss to the Astros in his previous appearance, even though he allowed four hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. Nolasco suffered a loss to the Indians the last time he faced them in late July, 10-4, but turned in a quality start by giving up three earned runs in 6.2 innings.

Josh Tomlin counters for Cleveland as the Indians own a 6-1 record in his past seven starts. Although Tomlin won his last road start at Detroit, the Indians have slumped to a 2-5 record in his last seven outings away from Progressive Field. Cleveland has won all four meetings with Los Angeles, while winning nine consecutive matchups with the Angels since last June.

Betcha didn’t know: The Mariners are slumping at the wrong time by losing four straight games, including last night’s series opener to the Rangers. Andrew Cashner heads to the hill for Texas tonight as the right-hander has been straight money on the road. The Rangers are 4-0 in his past four away starts, while cashing as a +110, +185, +155, and +165 underdog in those outings, while opening as a +140 ‘dog opposite Felix Hernandez tonight.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-290) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Royals (+100) at Blue Jays

Biggest line move: Padres (+134 to +128) vs. Diamondbacks

BALTIMORE (AP) Chris Sale struck out 13 to become the first AL pitcher in 18 years to reach the 300 mark, and the Boston Red Sox moved to the brink of clinching a playoff berth by beating the Baltimore Orioles 9-0 on Wednesday night.

Sale (17-7) reached the milestone on his last pitch, a called third strike against Ryan Flaherty to end the eighth inning. The last AL pitcher to fan 300 batters in a season was Boston's Pedro Martinez in 1999, when he set a club record with 313.

Mookie Betts and Deven Marrero homered for the Red Sox, who hold a three-game lead over the second-place Yankees with 10 games left.

After winning two straight 11-inning games over the skidding Orioles, Boston jumped to a 6-0 lead in the fifth and coasted to its 11th win in 14 games.

Betts and Marrero hit two-run homers in the fourth against Wade Miley (8-14) and Hanley Ramirez added a two-run double in the fifth.

Sale allowed four hits and walked none in matching his career high for wins.

                            YANKEES 11, TWINS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Aaron Judge hit his AL-leading 45th home run and topped 100 RBIs, Didi Gregorius surpassed Derek Jeter for the most home runs by a Yankees shortstop and New York beat Minnesota for a three-game sweep.

The game was briefly halted in the fifth inning when a foul ball down the third-base line off the bat of Todd Frazier struck a young girl, who was carried out of the stands, given first aid and taken to a hospital.

Frazier knelt down and covered his head, and many other Yankees and Twins watched in stunned silence as the fan was helped.

The Yankees, who have won 10 of 12, opened a seven-game advantage over the Twins for the top AL wild card with 10 games remaining.

The Twins have lost five of six and were outscored 18-6 in the three-game series.

Judge's two-run homer down the right-field line came on an 0-2 pitch from Bartolo Colin (4-6 in the AL and 6-14 overall).

Chasen Shreve (4-1) pitched three hitless innings in relief of Luis Severino.

                            RAYS 8, CUBS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Blake Snell gave up two hits in seven shutout innings, and Tampa Bay ended Chicago's season-best seven-game winning streak.

The Cubs, who had not lost since being swept by the Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game series in Chicago on Sept. 8-10, are scheduled to open a four-game series in Milwaukee on Thursday night. They lead the Brewers by 3 + games in the NL Central.

Steven Souza Jr. hit his 30th home run in the first inning and the Rays added three more runs in the second off Jon Lester.

Wilson Ramos, who had three of Tampa Bay's 10 hits, made it 7-0 with a two-run single in the fifth that knocked Lester (11-8) out of the game.

Lester, who had won three starts since coming off the disabled list on Sept. 2, gave up seven runs and eight hits with three walks in 4 1/3 innings. He had no strikeouts.

Snell (4-6) gave up singles to John Jay in the third and Addison Russell in the fifth. He walked three and struck out five in seven innings. Snell is 4-0 in 10 starts since July 24.

                            PHILLIES 7, DODGERS 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Altherr hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth after launching a tying, two-run homer an inning earlier, and Philadelphia beat slumping Los Angeles.

The Dodgers have lost four straight and 20 of 25 and will have to wait to wrap up the NL West.

The Phillies have won eight of 10 and are 32-33 since the All-Star break, climbing out of last place in the majors.

Luis Avilan (2-3) walked Cesar Hernandez to start the bottom of the eighth. Freddy Galvis bunted and catcher Austin Barnes made a wild throw to second base for an error that allowed the runners to reach second and third. Odubel Herrera struck out and Rhys Hoskins was intentionally walked. Brandon Morrow entered and Altherr ripped a hit off the right-field fence.

Earlier in the series, Altherr became the first major leaguer to hit a grand slam off Clayton Kershaw.

Luis Garcia (2-4) got the win despite allowing a run in the eighth. Hector Neris finished for his 23rd save in 26 chances.

                            PIRATES 6, BREWERS 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Adam Frazier hit a two-run homer off Milwaukee closer Corey Knebel with two outs in the ninth inning to lift Pittsburgh to the victory.

The Pirates tied it in the eighth on a throwing error by Knebel then ended a seven-game losing streak when Frazier homered into the first row of seats in the right-field stands.

Jesus Aguilar and Domingo Santana homered for the Brewers but Milwaukee missed a chance to pull into a tie with Colorado for the second wild-card spot in the National League.

Knebel (1-2) had converted 21 straight save opportunities. Milwaukee lost for just the third time in its last 12 games.

Felipe Rivero (5-2) earned the victory in relief. Frazier finished 2 for 5 with four RBIs. Starling Marte added two hits for the Pirates.

                            ROYALS 15, BLUE JAYS 5

TORONTO (AP) - Mike Moustakas hit his 37th home run of the season, breaking Steve Balboni's Royals record, Salvador Perez and Whit Merrifield also connected and Kansas City routed Toronto.

Rookie right-hander Jakob Junis (8-2) allowed four runs, two earned, in 6 1/3 innings, improving to 5-0 with a 2.42 ERA over his past eight starts.

Moustakas went 3 for 4 and came within a triple of hitting for the cycle. He eclipsed Balboni's 1985 record with a solo blast to right off Carlos Ramirez in the sixth.

Merrifield also had three hits and drove in a pair of runs as the Royals snapped a three-game losing streak and won for the second time in their past seven.

Kansas City came within a run of matching its season high. The Royals scored 16 against Detroit twice within a seven-day span in late July.

Leading 1-0, the Royals exploded for eight runs and seven hits in the second. Brett Anderson (3-4) allowed eight runs and seven hits in 1 1/3 innings.

                            GIANTS 4, ROCKIES 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Colorado starter Tyler Chatwood dug himself an early hole against the Giants and now the Rockies' lead for the second NL wild card is in jeopardy after a loss to last-place San Francisco, the club's third straight defeat.

Joe Panik hit a one-out triple in the first off Chatwood (8-13) and immediately scored on Denard Span's sacrifice fly, and then Panik doubled in the third and came home on Buster Posey's sacrifice fly.

Brandon Crawford hit a solo homer in the third to back Matt Moore (6-14), who earned his first win against Colorado after going 0-2 over his first three outings of the year.

After two straight 4-3, walkoff setbacks, the Rockies lost for the fifth time in seven games overall following a six-game winning streak.

                            CARDINALS 9, REDS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Dexter Fowler homered for the third straight game while Matt Carpenter and Paul DeJong also homered as St. Louis gained ground in its playoff push with a win over Cincinnati.

Tommy Pham finished with two doubles, a single and two RBIs and Yadier Molina added a two-run double as the third-place Cardinals (79-72) gained a game on Colorado in the wild-card race to move within 2 + games. St. Louis sits five games behind the Cubs in the NL Central chase.

Rookie right-hander Luke Weaver (7-1) retired 10 straight batters in one stretch on the way to his seventh straight winning start, the major leagues' longest active streak and the longest by a Cardinals pitcher this season. The 24-year-old allowed five hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in five innings.

Relievers Zach Duke, Seung Hwan Oh, Sandy Alcantara and Sam Tuivailala teamed up to retire 12 of the final 13 Reds batters.

Rookie Davis (1-3) gave up all three homers and five runs on five hits with three strikeouts in three innings.

                            NATIONALS 7, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Braves closer Arodys Vizcaino issued three bases-loaded walks in the six-run eighth, Gio Gonzalez pitched seven strong innings and Washington beat Atlanta.

Gonzalez (15-7) allowed two runs, three hits and one walk to enjoy some rare good luck in the series. The left-hander, who struck out eight, began the night 4-11 with a 5.27 ERA in 20 career starts against the Braves.

The NL East champion Nationals rallied from a 2-1 deficit for their third straight win.

Pinch-hitter Wilmer Difo singled, Trea Turner doubled and Jayson Werth walked in the eighth against Jose Ramirez (2-3). Braves manager Brian Snitker brought in Vizcaino, and the move quickly backfired.

Daniel Murphy, Ryan Zimmerman and Anthony Rendon walked, and Vizcaino left without a retiring a batter. Rex Brothers then gave up Adam Lind's two-run single and Michael Taylor's RBI single to make it 7-2.

Ramirez allowed three runs, two hits and one walk with one strikeout in 1/3 of an inning.

                            ASTROS 4, WHITE SOX 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Yuli Gurriel had three hits, including a two-run double, Brad Peacock threw six solid innings and Houston extended its winning streak to six games with a win over Chicago.

Peacock (12-2) allowed two runs on one hit with six strikeouts. The right-hander continues to throw well, allowing two runs or fewer in each of his last five starts.

After Yoan Moncada put the White Sox up 2-1 in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer, Gurriel answered with his two-run hit in the bottom half of the inning.

Jose Altuve upped Houston's lead to 4-2 with an RBI single in the seventh, but Yolmer Sanchez cut the lead to one with an RBI double in the eighth.

Joe Musgrove struck out Moncada with the tying run on second to end the eighth and struck out Omar Narvaez with the tying run on second to end the game for his second save.

James Shields (4-7) allowed three runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

                            MARLINS 5, METS 4, 10 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) - J.T. Realmuto homered in the 10th inning, and Miami beat New York after rallying for three runs in the ninth against former teammate A.J. Ramos.

With one out, Realmuto hit a 1-1 pitch from Paul Sewald (0-6) into the Mets' bullpen for his 17th homer.

Miami trailed 4-1 in the ninth before coming back against Ramos, who faced the Marlins for the first time since they traded the closer to New York on July 28.

Justin Bour led off with his 22nd homer and first since a six-week stint on the disabled list. Ramos then gave up four singles, including two-out RBI hits by pinch-hitter A.J. Ellis and Ichiro Suzuki.

Sewald replaced Ramos and struck out Christian Yelich on a 3-2 breaking ball with the bases loaded to force extra innings. Ramos' blown save was his first with the Mets.

Major league home run leader Giancarlo Stanton walked a season-high four times and struck out in his only at-bat to remain at 55 homers with 11 games to go.

                            ATHLETICS 3, TIGERS 2

Mengden (2-1) allowed seven hits and struck out four, extending his scoreless streak to 16 1/3 innings and helping the A's to their fourth consecutive win. The 24-year-old right-hander missed the first two months of the season after undergoing offseason foot surgery and was making his fifth major league start this year.

Liam Hendriks got the final two outs in the ninth to earn his first save.

Anibal Sanchez (3-5) pitched well in a losing effort, allowing three hits and one run in six innings. He struck out eight and walked three.

                              ***********************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                              13) Opening Day payrolls this season:
Toronto Blue Jays: $163,381,937. Record: 71-81
                              Milwaukee Brewers: $63,061,300. Record: 82-70

                              12) Phillies 7, Dodgers 5— Bigger news: After the game, Corey Seager left the Dodgers’ clubhouse limping, with medical/training staff.

                              11) Angels are 15-2 this season when Parker Bridwell is their starting pitcher, 61-72 when anyone else is the starting pitcher.

                              10) Marlins 9, Mets 2— Giancarlo Stanton hit his 56th homer of the season.

                              9) Diamondbacks’ star 1B Paul Goldschmidt has apparently seen the movie Billy Madison over 100 times; I’ve never seen it myself, so now I have to.

                              8) Royals 15, Blue Jays 5— Mike Moustakas hit his 37th homer, setting the all-time single season record for the Royals, previously held by Steve Balboni.

Some college football trends for this week:
                              7) Washington Huskies coach Petersen is 27-13 vs spread as a road favorite.

                              6) San Diego State won its last six games vs Air Force (5-1 vs spread).

                              5) Texas Tech covered seven of last nine tries as a road underdog.

                              Elsewhere in the world…….

                              4) Richard Sherman makes $13,631,000 this season to play football; he is a smart guy, went to Stanford, but he can’t seem to stop biting the hand that feeds him:

“From what I understand, the rule is for the gamblers, for Vegas, to make sure that the odds and everything are what they’re supposed to be, which is apparently what the league is concerned about when talking about injuries and things like that. So maybe somebody should look into that, because I thought we weren’t a gambling league and we were against all those things. But our injury report is specifically to make sure the gamblers get their odds right.”
Sherman, talking about NFL injury reports

So now Sherman is Captain Obvious; not sure what his point his, unless he is going to want the players to get a piece of the pie when gambling on the NFL becomes legal.

                              3) Interesting discussion on Inside the NFL this week on Showtime: Ray Lewis/Boomer Esiason were talking about how the lack of practice reps in the summer is hurting offensive play. Phil Simms called college football “flag football”, saying that spread offenses have hurt offensive line play in the NFL, as those players move on to the pros.

                              2) NL playoff race:
Giants 4, Rockies 0— Rockies lost 5 of last 7 games, are looking shaky.
Pirates 6, Brewers 4— Adam Frazier’s walk-off HR keeps Colorado atop Wild Card standings.
Rays 8, Cubs 1— Chicago’s 7-game winning streak comes to an end.
Cardinals 9, Reds 2— Big night for St Louis; everyone above them lost.

                              1) Padres’ backup catcher Rocky Gale hit his first big league homer in the 2nd inning last night, in his 12th MLB at-bat. The joy on his face was so obvious, it was outstanding; most times, guys try to play it cool as they round the bases, but Gale was just beaming— great to see.
