CLEVELAND (AP) The Cleveland Indians stretched their franchise-record winning streak to 18 games, beating the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 Sunday night behind homers from Francisco Lindor and Roberto Perez.

Cleveland's streak is the longest in the majors since Oakland won 20 straight in 2002. The best run in baseball history belongs to the New York Giants, who had a 26-game streak in 1916, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Giants' streak included a tie, which doesn't count as a game in baseball.

The crowd of 21,259 roared in the ninth inning as Cody Allen recorded his 26th save. He struck out the first two hitters and retired Trey Mancini on a line drive to right field to end the game.

Perez snapped a 1-all tie in the sixth with a leadoff homer. Lindor then broke two bats while running the count to 3-2 before homering to right. Cleveland's All-Star shortstop, using a bat tossed to him by teammate Abraham Almonte, looked at the dugout and smiled as his 29th homer of the season sailed into the seats.

Trevor Bauer (16-8) allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings for Cleveland.

Jeremy Hellickson (3-3) gave up three runs in six innings.

            NATIONALS 3, PHILLIES 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington became the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot this season, winning the NL East as Stephen Strasburg extended his scoreless streak to a franchise-record 34 innings.

More than 90 minutes after Washington finished off the Phillies, Nationals Park erupted again when Lane Adams hit a two-run, 11th-inning homer to lead Atlanta over second-place Miami, sealing the division title for the fourth time in six years.

Strasburg (13-4) threw two-hit ball for eight innings and struck out 10. He hasn't allowed a run since Aug. 19 at San Diego, his first start since coming off the disabled list with an elbow nerve impingement.

Ryan Madson gave up Nick Williams' bloop two-out, two-run single before retiring Rhys Hoskins on a grounder for his second save this season and first since the Nationals acquired him from Oakland on July 16.

Rookie Ben Lively (3-6) allowed six hits and struck out seven in his first career complete game, the first for the Phillies this year.

            BRAVES 10, MARLINS 8

ATLANTA (AP) - Rio Ruiz had a tying, two-run single with two outs in a three-run ninth inning and Lane Adams hit a two-run homer off Vance Worley (2-5) in the 11th.

Dee Gordon broke an eighth-inning tie with his first career pinch-homer. Christian Yelich hit an RBI double in the ninth and scored on Justin Bour's sacrifice fly to boost the lead to 8-5.

Arodys Vizcaino (5-3) allowed two hits in two scoreless innings.

            • Streak on: Indians beat Orioles for 18th win in a row
              September 10, 2017

Cleveland hasn't lost since Aug. 23 and has outscored its opponents 121-32 in the streak. Cleveland has trailed in only four of 162 innings during the stretch.

The Indians are a game ahead of Houston for the league's best record and reduced their magic number to clinch the AL Central to seven. Cleveland trailed Houston by 14 games on July 22.

The New York Yankees won 19 in a row in 1947, which the Indians can match Monday against Detroit.

Trevor Bauer (16-8) allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander moved into a tie with Boston's Chris Sale for the league lead in wins and has won nine straight decisions.

Jose Ramirez, back in the lineup after missing three games with a sore wrist, had an RBI groundout in the first. Baltimore tied it in the sixth on Jonathan Schoop's single.

Chris Davis hit a solo homer in the seventh for Baltimore, which has lost four straight and is three games out of the wild-card race. Jeremy Hellickson (3-3) allowed three runs in six innings.

              TRAINER'S ROOM

Orioles: Manager Buck Showalter said OF Craig Gentry (broken right finger) could rejoin the team this week in Toronto.

Indians: OF Bradley Zimmer was removed from the game with an injured left hand after diving into first trying to beat out a ground ball in the seventh.

              UP NEXT

Orioles: RHP Ubaldo Jimenez will make his first start since Aug. 30 in the first of a three-game series Monday against Toronto.

Indians: RHP Carlos Carrasco, coming off his first complete game of the season against the White Sox, will start the opener of a three-game series with visiting Detroit.

              • LEADING OFF: Dodgers near LA skid record, Rays at home in NY
                September 10, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

                STILL STRUGGLING

The NL West-leading Dodgers are a loss away from their longest skid since moving to Los Angeles as they open a series at San Francisco. L.A. has dropped 10 straight for the first time since 1992, and that was the franchise's worst stretch since the Brooklyn Dodgers lost 16 consecutive in 1944. Kenta Maeda (12-6, 4.02 ERA) tries to play stopper against Giants rookie Chris Stratton (2-3, 4.10).

                HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Lucas Duda gets to be on the home team at Citi Field once again, this time when the Rays host the Yankees in Queens because of Hurricane Irma. Duda was traded from the Mets to Tampa Bay this season, and this will be his first trip back to his old home since the July deal. The Yankees are wrapping a ten-game road trip just a few miles from their Bronx stadium.

                9/11 ANNIVERSARY

Teams across the country will hold pregame ceremonies and moments of silence on the 16-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, and players, coaches and umpires will wear hats with an American flag patch. There was no scheduled home game for either New York team, although the Yankees will play against the Rays at the Mets' home in Citi Field due to Hurricane Irma.

                REST UP

The Nationals are off, a day after becoming the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot this season. Fresh from winning its fourth NL East crown in four years, Washington resumes Tuesday at home against Atlanta. Manager Dusty Baker already is trying to give his regulars rest down the stretch - Matt Wieters and Jayson Werth sat out both Saturday and Sunday, while Daniel Murphy, Ryan Zimmerman, Anthony Rendon and Michael A. Taylor all watched the Nats' last game over the weekend.

Top six picks in the Week 1 of the Westgate SuperContest in Las Vegas:

                  6) Pittsburgh Steelers -8.5 , 706- L
                  5) Arizona Cardinals -2, 742- L
                  4) Atlanta Falcons -6.5, 819- L
                  3) Tennessee Titans -2.5, 839- L
                  2) Houston Texans -5, 863- L
                  1) Cincinnati Bengals -2.5, 866- L

                  (Season record: 0-6)

                  **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Chiefs 42, Patriots 27— Chiefs scored 28 second half points, ran up 537 yards, offsetting 139 penalty yards, as they made New England’s defense look slow. Only one of KC’s six TD drives was less than 75 yards- they had touchdown PLAYS of 75, 78 yards. Surprising result, but last three times New England lost in Week 1, they won the Super Bowl that year.

Bills 21, Jets 12— Buffalo sits alone atop AFC East, holding Jets to 38 rushing yards and 11 first downs. As far as team points over/unders go, my new hobby here, under is 18-7-1— only 7 of 26 teams exceeded their over/under points so far this week. Jets’ total was 15.5, 1.5 points lower than any other team this week.

Falcons 23, Bears 17— Chicago had ball on 10-yard line when game ended; two passes were either dropped/broken up inside 2-yard line in last three plays. Falcons coach Quinn was VERY happy when this game ended and he let it show— not sure happy is right word, maybe total relief after that Super Bowl and then an 0-4 preseason.

Jaguars 29, Texans 7— Upset of Day. Jacksonville ran ball for 155 yards, were +4 in turnovers, and held QB-challenged Houston to 203 yards. Savage was awful in first half; rookie QB Watson played second half, led one TD drive, but this was another very disappointing day in Houston.

Eagles 30, Redskins 17— Philly’s two TD drives were only 56-39 yards; each team scored a defensive TD, as Eagles snapped a 5-game skid against Washington. Iggles converted 8-14 on 3rd down, Redskins only 3-14, as Philly scored TD’s on two of first four drives, then kicked three FG’s on their last six drives.

Lions 35, Cardinals 23— On their first nine drives, Detroit had one TD, one FG, gaining total of 182 yards, but on their last three drives, Lions ran 17 plays for 149 yards and three TD’s. I have a question: is conditioning a factor early in the season? Teams haven’t played full games because coaches are scared of injuries, so when they have to play a full game in Week 1, are some teams in worse shape than others? Arizona’s defense looked very tired at the end.

Raiders 26, Titans 16— One of two games this week (Atl-Chi) with no turnovers. For the week so far, home teams are 7-6 vs spread; over is 3-10. Listening to TV Sunday, the consensus is that the defenses are ahead of offenses in the first couple weeks of the season. Offense takes more precision. Titans were 7-14 on 3rd down but scored only one TD, kicked three FG’s.

Ravens 20, Bengals 0— Baltimore led 3-0 at 2:00 warning of first half, then scored two TD’s in 0:24 span to break game open and lead 17-0 at half. Total yardage in lackluster game was 268-221 Baltimore; Ravens had 85 penalty yards, while Bengals turned ball over five times (-4). Flacco was 9-17/111 passing, after missing just about the whole summer with a bad back.

Steelers 21, Browns 18— Cleveland is now 1-18 in Week 1, with only win 13 years ago. Steelers blocked punt for TD on Browns’ first drive, then survived 144 penalty yards to win their opener. Pittsburgh ran 17 times for only 35 yards, which is not good; Big Ben targeted Brown 11 times, and he caught all 11 passes for 182 yards.

Rams 46, Colts 9— Indy has severe QB issues; if Andrew Luck can’t come back soon, and he hasn’t started practicing yet, they should sign Colin Kaepernick, who is way better than either Tolzien or Brissett. As for the Rams, this was a great day; Jared Goff looked like an NFL QB and the defense was dominant, even without Aaron Donald.

Packers 17, Seahawks 9— Game was scoreless until just before the half; this was 5th time in Seattle’s last nine road games that they scored 10 or less points. Rodgers was a magician on third down (9-16), as usual; Green Bay held Seahawks to 12 first downs as Seattle lost its 8th game in a row at Lambeau Field.

Panthers 23, 49ers 3— Hard to tell much about Carolina’s offense; their two TD drives were only 42-28 yards. Total yardage was 287-217; Panthers were 7-13 on third down- they didn’t score on any of their drives that started 75+ yards from the goal line, but scored two TD’s, kicked three FG’s on the other five drives that started less than 75 yards from the goal line.

Cowboys 19, Giants 3— Dallas outgained Giants 392-233; New York ran ball only 12 times for 35 yards, converted only 4-12 on third down- their average starting field position was their own 16 yard line. Under is now 8-1 in Giants’ last nine road games; they are 5-10-2 vs spread in last 17 games as a road underdog. Cowboys converted 8-15 on third down, had a 13-yard edge in average starting field position.

                          • Nationals first to clinch, but more will follow soon
                            September 11, 2017

The Washington Nationals became the first major league team to clinch a postseason spot when they wrapped up the NL East on Sunday.

They'll have plenty of company in the playoff picture soon enough.

The Nationals lead their division by 20 games, but three other teams have also turned their races into routs. The Cleveland Indians, winners of 18 straight , lead the AL Central by 13 games, and the Houston Astros are ahead by the same margin in the AL West.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a nine-game lead in the NL West, and that's only after a 10-game losing streak quashed any chance they had of setting a major league record for victories.

Anticlimactic races are nothing new in the six-division era - in 1995, the Indians won the AL Central by a staggering 30 games - but it is somewhat unusual for so many first-place teams to have leads this comfortable. The last time four of the six divisions were decided by double digits was back in 2002, when the Braves, Twins, Cardinals and Yankees won by 19, 13 1/2, 13 and 10 1/2 games. This season could end up looking similar.

The gold standard for lopsided division races may have come in 1998. That year, five of the six divisions were decided by at least nine games, with the Yankees winning by 22 and the Braves by 18.

Cleveland and Houston enter this coming week with magic numbers of seven to clinch their divisions. The number is 11 for the Dodgers, barely down from 14 at the beginning of the month.

Some more developments from around baseball:

                            CUTTING IT CLOSE

The one really close division race right now is in the NL Central, where the Chicago Cubs are two games ahead of both Milwaukee and St. Louis. With a talented, young nucleus returning from last year's World Series victory, the Cubs figured to be in charge of that division for a while, but it's been a struggle all season. Chicago has been good but not great, and even if the Cubs do make the postseason, they could finish with a worse record than both National League wild cards.

The Brewers have typified the all-or-nothing approach that seems prevalent throughout baseball these days. They have struck out more times than any team in the majors, but they're also second in the NL in homers. The quartet of Travis Shaw, Eric Thames, Domingo Santana and Keon Broxton has combined for 101 homers - only one fewer than Chicago's Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber and Javier Baez.

St. Louis dropped nine of its first 12 games back in April and was seven games out of first place on the morning of Sept. 3. The Cardinals have won seven of eight since then.

                            HIGHLIGHTS

Fans in Washington and Toronto saw both ends of the defensive spectrum Friday night. Michael Taylor of the Nationals ended up with an inside-the-park grand slam when Philadelphia's Odubel Herrera misjudged his line drive to center field. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, were victimized by a gem of a play when Detroit's Jeimer Candelario backhanded a grounder and started a 5-4-3 triple play .

                            LINE OF THE WEEK

J.D. Martinez of Arizona contributed to the Dodgers' slump by hitting four home runs Monday night. His last three homers came in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

An honorable mention goes to Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox, who hit for the cycle Saturday night.

The Indians can win their 19th straight game when they open a series against Detroit. Cleveland is two victories shy of the 2002 ''Moneyball'' Athletics for the longest streak since 1935, and it can get within striking distance with a win as Carlos Carrasco (14-6, 3.53) takes on Tigers rookie Myles Jaye (1-0, 0.00). Throughout this franchise-record run, the Indians have maintained that it's not much of a discussion topic in the clubhouse. ''Maybe this thing gets more carried away with other people as opposed to us,'' manager Terry Francona said. ''We just play the game.''

                              HOME RUN RECORD APPROACHING

With 42 homers, batters increased their season total to 5,448, closing within 245 of the major league record of 5,693 homers set in 2000. At this rate, the record will be shattered with about two weeks left in the season.
