      • MLB roundup: Pirates ruin Hill's no-hit bid with walk-off HR
        August 23, 2017

PITTSBURGH -- Josh Harrison ended Rich Hill's no-hit bid with a walk-off home run in the 10th inning, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night.

Harrison lifted a 2-1 pitch over the left-field wall. After Hill (9-5) began with eight perfect innings, third baseman Logan Forsythe committed an error with no outs in the ninth, allowing Jordy Mercer to reach. Hill threw 99 pitches, 75 of them strikes.

Josh Bell nearly broke up the no-hit attempt twice earlier. In the second inning, he was called safe when he seemingly beat first baseman Adrian Gonzalez's throw to Hill. After a challenge, however, the call was reversed.

Then, in the eighth inning, Bell sharply struck a ball toward center field, but second baseman Chase Utley robbed him with a diving catch.

        Royals 6, Rockies 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Eric Hosmer's three-run walk-off homer with two outs in the ninth inning lifted Kansas City over Colorado.

Hosmer's blast with Alex Gordon and Melky Cabrera aboard came off former Royals closer Greg Holland (2-5). The first baseman ripped a 1-1 offering out to right for his first career walk-off home run.

Brandon Maurer (3-5) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the victory. Kansas City's Whit Merrifield went 4-for-5, matching his career-high in hits. Hosmer added three hits.

        Red Sox 6, Indians 1

CLEVELAND -- Mitch Moreland and Eduardo Nunez homered, and four Boston pitchers combined for a three-hitter in defeating Cleveland.

Moreland hit a solo home run off Corey Kluber in the fifth inning, and Nunez belted a two-run shot off Bryan Shaw in Boston's four-run ninth. The Indians' Edwin Encarnacion homered in the eighth off reliever Addison Reed.

Drew Pomeranz (13-4) pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up two hits, with nine strikeouts and four walks. Joe Kelly, Reed and Craig Kimbrel followed Pomeranz to the mound. Kluber (12-4) struck out 12 and allowed two runs in 7 2/3 innings.

        Astros 6, Nationals 1

HOUSTON -- Mike Fiers produced his best start in more than a month, and Jake Marisnick, Max Stassi and Alex Bregman hit home runs as Houston topped Washington.

After allowing at least three runs and two homers in each of his previous four starts, Fiers (8-8) surrendered one run, four hits and one walk in seven innings. It marked his longest outing since he worked seven innings in consecutive starts in mid-July.

Marisnick belted his 15th home run of the season with one out in the fifth inning off the Nationals' Edwin Jackson, giving the Astros a 2-1 lead.

        Cubs 9, Reds 3

CINCINNATI -- Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run homer and Tommy La Stella added a two-run shot as Chicago won its fifth straight.

Mike Montgomery (4-6) allowed four hits in six shutout innings. The Cubs played without third baseman Kris Bryant, who was hit on the hand by a pitch during the ninth inning on Tuesday night. He was replaced by La Stella, who reached base four times.

The Reds' Joey Votto hit a solo homer in the ninth, his 33rd homer of the season, off Hector Rondon. Cincinnati wasn't finished with Rondon, who allowed back-to-back homers by Eugenio Suarez and Scott Schebler before recording the final out.

        Yankees 10, Tigers 2

DETROIT -- Gary Sanchez continued his power surge with his third homer in two games as New York rolled past Detroit.

Sanchez hit a solo homer in the first inning and added a two-run single in the third. He has homered in six of the past nine games, and he has nine long balls over the past 14 contests, giving him 26 for the season.

Luis Severino (11-5) collected a victory for the sixth time in his last seven starts. He limited the Tigers to one run on six hits and a walk while striking out eight in 6 2/3 innings.

        Blue Jays 7, Rays 6

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Toronto hit six home runs, five of them solo, and Kevin Pillar's shot in the eighth inning gave Toronto the victory over Tampa Bay.

The teams combined for nine home runs, matching the most in a Rays game. Tampa Bay came back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the game in the seventh, only to leave the bases loaded and see the Blue Jays snap a four-game losing streak.

Kevin Kiermaier hit two home runs for the Rays while Justin Smoak hit his 34th of the season for Toronto.

        Cardinals 6, Padres 2

ST. LOUIS -- Luke Weaver pitched seven shutout innings, tying a career high with 10 strikeouts, as St. Louis subdued San Diego.

Making only his third start of the year, Weaver (2-1) permitted three hits and one walk, throwing 69 of his 99 pitches for strikes. His outing allowed the Cardinals to snap a 12-game streak of allowing opponents to score at least five runs.

Kolten Wong, moved to the leadoff spot with Matt Carpenter sidelined with a virus, sparked the offense by going 3-for-5 with three runs and two steals. Jedd Gyorko added two RBI singles.

        Mets 4, Diamondbacks 2

NEW YORK -- Chris Flexen tossed a career-high six innings, and fellow rookies Brandon Nimmo and Dominic Smith combined to score all four runs in New York's victory over Arizona.

Flexen (3-2), making his sixth career start, allowed two runs, six hits and four walks while striking out five. Nimmo, who has played every day since Curtis Granderson was traded Friday, reached base in all four plate appearances via three walks and a double.

Smith, who became the Mets' everyday first baseman upon his promotion Aug. 11, walked and scored in the fourth on a single by shortstop Amed Rosario -- another rookie who has played full-time since he was recalled Aug. 1. Smith later homered in the sixth.

        Orioles 8, Athletics 7 (12 innings)

BALTIMORE -- Zach Britton's American League record streak of consecutive saves ended at 60, but Baltimore still emerged with a victory over Oakland on a game-winning homer by Manny Machado in the 12th inning.

The Athletics' Marcus Semien went 3-for-5 with an RBI double in the sixth and a single in the ninth that cut the Orioles' lead to 7-6 off Britton. One batter later, Matt Joyce tied the game on a sacrifice fly. Britton had not blown a save since Sept. 20, 2015.

Machado provided the victory when he led off the 12th with a shot that barely cleared the center-field wall off Simon Castro (1-2). Miguel Castro (3-1) picked up the win by throwing 3 2/3 scoreless innings.

        Mariners 9, Braves 6

ATLANTA -- Kyle Seager had three hits, including a three-run homer that highlighted a five-run eighth-inning rally, to propel Seattle past Atlanta.

The Mariners entered the eighth trailing 6-5 and rallied against Jim Johnson, who allowed each of the four batters he faced to reach base. Seager then greeted rookie reliever Dan Winkler with an opposite-field homer that bounced off the top of the wall.

Seattle's Erasmo Ramirez gave up three runs and six hits and struck out six, matching his season high, in six innings. It marked his third straight quality start. He also went 2-for-3, becoming the fourth pitcher in franchise history to collect two hits in a game.

        White Sox 4, Twins 3

CHICAGO -- Tim Anderson lined a single to left to score Avisail Garcia with the winning run as Chicago claimed a walk-off victory over Minnesota.

The White Sox shortstop sent a 1-0 pitch from Trevor Hildenberger (2-2) with one out in the ninth inning for his first career game-ending hit. Danny Farquhar (3-2) worked a scoreless inning for the victory.

Garcia led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to right and reached second on Kevan Smith's sacrifice bunt. An intentional walk to Yolmer Sanchez set the stage for Anderson.

        Giants 4, Brewers 2

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jarrett Parker's check-swing, two-run double broke a seventh-inning tie and sent San Francisco past Milwaukee.

Matt Moore pitched six strong innings before handing off the ball to the bullpen, helping the Giants win for a second time in the three-game series against the playoff-contending Brewers. The loss dropped Milwaukee to 3-3 on its nine-game Western swing.

Pinch hitter Denard Span's one-out double down the right-field line against Jacob Barnes (3-4), the third Brewers pitcher, got the decisive seventh inning rolling for the Giants.

        Phillies 8, Marlins 0

PHILADELPHIA -- A three-run homer by rookie slugger Rhys Hoskins punctuated a five-run third inning as Philadelphia backed a terrific outing by Mark Leiter Jr. with a well-rounded offensive performance en route to victory over Miami.

Leiter (2-3) carried a no-hitter through five innings, a second-inning walk to Marcell Ozuna his only blemish until Miguel Rojas doubled to lead off the sixth. The son of 11-year major league veteran Mark Leiter recorded the best of his five major league starts, going seven innings for the first time while giving up one hit and two walks. He struck out five.

Hoskins added a two-run double and has seven home runs and 16 RBIs in his first 14 games -- the most in that span in club history.

        • MLB notebook: Cardinals' Rosenthal needs Tommy John surgery
          August 23, 2017

St. Louis Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal is in need of Tommy John surgery on his injured pitching elbow and will miss the rest of the regular season, the team announced Wednesday.

Cardinals general manager Mike Girsch told reporters that Rosenthal will undergo the surgery next week. The team had transferred the right-hander from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day DL earlier in the day.

Rosenthal had been placed on the 10-day disabled list on Thursday with what was called "right posterior elbow irritation."

In 50 games this season, Rosenthal is 3-4 with a 3.40 ERA and 11 saves. He converted seven straight saves from July 28 through Aug. 12.

--New York Mets left-handed pitcher Steven Matz underwent season-ending surgery on his left elbow. The purpose of the operation was to reposition a compressed nerve in his elbow.

Manager Terry Collins announced on Monday that Matz was headed to the disabled list, but did not specify the problem at that time.

Matz, 26, began the season on the disabled list and has been struggling since his return, posting a 2-7 mark with a 6.08 ERA. He is 0-6 with a 10.19 ERA in his last eight starts.

He is expected to be ready for Opening Day in 2018.

--Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, the team announced.

Kipnis is the third Indians' player to be placed on the disabled list in the last two days, joining All-Star reliever Andrew Miller (right knee tendinitis) and right-hander Danny Salazar (sore right elbow).

The 30-year-old Kipnis, who is headed to the disabled list for the third time this season, had just returned two weeks ago from a month-long stint on the DL. Infielder Erik Gonzalez was recalled from Triple-A Columbus to take the roster spot of Kipnis, who is batting .228 with 11 homers and 30 RBIs in 79 games this season.

          --The Boston
Red Sox placed outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained left thumb, the team announced.

To fill the spot on the 25-man roster, the Red Sox recalled infielder Deven Marrero from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Bradley, 27, suffered the injury in the seventh inning of Tuesday night's 9-1 win against the Cleveland Indians while sliding awkwardly into home plate to avoid a tag by catcher Yan Gomes.

Bradley is batting .262 with 14 home runs, 54 RBIs and 50 runs scored for the Red Sox this season. He has a .992 fielding percentage with four assists in 106 starts in center field.

          --The Seattle Mariners
reinstated right-hander David Phelps from the 10-day disabled list.

The team also designated outfielder Leonys Martin for assignment. The Mariners have seven days to trade, release or outright the contract of Martin to the minor leagues.

Phelps, 30, was placed on the 10-day DL with an impingement in his right elbow on Aug. 8 (retroactive to Aug. 7).

-- Joe Klein, former general manager of the Texas Rangers and two other major league teams, died Wednesday due to complications from heart surgery. He was 75.

After seven seasons as a Washington Senators minor league infielder from 1962-68, Klein was a minor league manager and team executive during the franchise's next 16 years.

Klein served as the Rangers' general manager from October 1982 to November 1984 and during that time helped develop front-office executive Tom Grieve, who succeeded him as GM.

Klein went on to be the general manager for the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers before a run as executive director of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball since its inception in 1998.

          • Thursday’s six-pack

            — In last 30 years, Nevada sportsbooks haven’t had a losing September in college football.

            — New England Patriots are favored in every game from Week 1-Week 16; spreads for Week 17 games are not posted in the summer.

            — Nick Saban is 31-2 in SEC games against the current 13 coaches at other SEC schools.

            — A’s traded Rajai Davis to Boston, for an 18-year old OF prospect who is playing in the Dominican Summer League.

            — Raiders’ LT Donald Penn ended his holdout. practiced on Wednesday.

            — Mitchell Robinson, a 5-star prospect and top-10 recruit this past spring, is not expected to play college basketball after he left Western Kentucky in July. Good luck there; hopefully the kid goes overseas for a year and at least plays SOMEWHERE.

            ***********************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

            13) Long time ago, the Dallas Cowboys had a very fast WR named Bob Hayes; this is in the 60’s, when the Cowboys first got really good. Bullet Bob Hayes was a sprinter— Dallas picked him in the 7th round of the 1964 Draft, with the 88th pick. Great pick— Hayes caught 371 passes in the NFL— 71 of them were touchdowns.

Detroit had the 89th pick that year; they took a lineman from Wichita State that you may have heard of, even though he didn’t play in the NFL.

Guy named Bill Parcells, whose 76th birthday was this week.

            12) Baseball is terrific because odd things can happen at any time; LA’s Rich Hill had a perfect game thru 8 innings last night in Pittsburgh, but his 3B made an error in the 9th inning- the game remained scoreless thru nine innings. Hill stayed in the game, even though his blister issues usually mean he comes out before he gets to 100 pitches.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Josh Harrison got the Pirates’ first hit, a walk-off homer that ended a great pitching duel. He hit Hill’s 99th pitch over the fence, ending a great game.

            11) Doug Fister allowed a leadoff homer Tuesday night, then didn’t allow another hit in a 9-1 Red Sox win in Cleveland. It was Fister’s first complete game since 2014.

            10) According to ESPN.com, underdogs covered 52.5% of college football games last year, the best year for underdogs in the last 12.

            9) Anthony Rizzo played some 3B Tuesday night, the first lefty to do so in a major league game in 20 years.

            8) Atlanta Falcons will leave a day earlier than usual on their five non-divisional road trips this season; they feel it helps with team bonding.

            7) Louisville QB Lamar Jackson won the Heisman Trophy LY; he tried hard to gain weight in the offseason, and is seven pounds heavier than last year, 30 pounds heavier than when he was a freshman.

            6) Good news for NBA’s TV partners, with Cavaliers-Celtics playing on Opening Night. Kyrie Irving t-shirts were 75% off at the Cavaliers’ team store Wednesday.

            5) Indians put Salazar/Miller on the DL Tuesday; they put Jason Kipnis on the DL yesterday. If you’re involved in fantasy baseball, you realize this: baseball players get hurt a lot.

Red Sox put Jackie Bradley Jr (thumb) on the DL.

            4) Scott Blumstein won the World Series of Poker this summer; before the event, four of his friends gave him $60 each towards the $10,000 entry fee— those four friends will each come away with $40,750 before taxes, after Blumstein won the $8.15M first prize.

            3) Since 1994, the Philadelphia Eagles have had 119 pass plays of 50+ yards, most in the NFL, two more than the Packers, three more than New Orleans.

Defensively, Atlanta has allowed 127 pass plays of 50+ yards, 20 more than any other team.

            2) Since 2012, Temple (39-24) is the best team in the country against the spread, but Matt Rhule is the coach at Baylor now— we’ll see if Temple can keep up with their successful ways.

Over the last five years, UConn (18-40) is the worst team in America against the spread.

            1) On August 15, a guy in Las Vegas bet $500 on BYU to win the national title, at 300-1, which would net him $150,000 if the Cougars won the national championship. There was another $200 bet on BYU back in June, at 500-1. Someone likes BYU this season.

The Red Sox acquired Davis on Wednesday from Oakland for an 18-year-old outfielder, making the move on the same day they put center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. on the 10-day disabled list because of a sprained left thumb. The 36-year-old Davis hit .233 with 26 stolen bases, five home runs and 18 RBIs in 100 games with the A's this season. Last year, he led the American League with 43 steals with the Indians.

              WELCOME BACK

Arizona lefty Robbie Ray (9-5, 3.11 ERA) will be activated from the disabled list to start the series finale vs. the Mets at Citi Field. The first-time All-Star last pitched in the majors on July 28 in St. Louis, where he suffered a concussion after being struck in the head by a line drive.

              CARLOS COMING BACK

Astros star Carlos Correa will begin a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Fresno. Correa has been out since July 17 after having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb. He is expected to play seven innings. Manager A.J. Hinch isn't sure how long he'll need to play in the minors before coming off the disabled list.

              TAKE YOUR TIME

Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano can rest up, a day after an early exit in Atlanta. He hit two doubles before leaving with tightness in his left hamstring. Cano is batting .277 with 19 homers and 78 RBIs. Seattle is off before opening a weekend series at Yankee Stadium.

              ROLLING

Dodgers lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-6, 3.45 ERA) is undefeated in his last eight starts for the NL West leaders, going 2-0 with a 2.22 ERA since June 17. He'll try to extend the streak when Los Angeles plays the Pirates at PNC Park.

              NEW SETTING

The Blue Jays hope a change of scenery will help pitcher Tom Koehler. Toronto got the 31-year-old righty last weekend from Miami, where he was 1-5 with a 7.92 ERA in 12 starts. He'll make his first start for his new club at Tampa Bay.

                        • Gulls: Winningest team in San Francisco Bay Area baseball
                          August 24, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Among Denard Span's greatest fears in the outfield is having a gull splat on him from above as he chases down a long fly ball.

It's a real possibility, considering how regularly the pesky birds come in off the San Francisco Bay to hover low over the Giants' AT&T Park.

''I'm afraid of them dropping something, using the bathroom on top of me,'' said Span, San Francisco's center fielder. ''Or maybe them dropping some food near me and then all of them just freaking swarming me.''

Sports venues across the country struggle to wave off pigeons, bats and gulls, but the two Bay Area ballparks' proximity to the water and dumps attracts birds in large flocks. It has been such a problem at the Oakland Coliseum that stadium operations officials added a pair of vinyl kites this season in an effort to fend them off.

Gulls typically feed at dumps, but marine biologists say recent efforts taken by some nearby sites to bury the waste faster have kept the feathered creatures away. Now, the gulls circle Bay Area ballparks in the hundreds to scour for leftovers such as those popular garlic fries, creating a nuisance for fans and players - not to mention the grounds crew that goes back to work on the infield, basepaths and mound the moment a game ends.

That prompted the two teams to experiment with unconventional measures of dealing with their respective bird business.

In Oakland, the bird brigade was becoming such a problem that the Athletics added two falcon-shaped kites this season to try to scare off the gulls. The kites even have catchy nicknames chosen by fans: ''Falcon McFalconface'' and ''Scott Hattebird,'' after former A's star Scott Hatteberg.

''We took off the tarps in the third deck for the first time in several years, so it seemed to open up the opportunity for the birds to come,'' said David Rinetti, the A's vice president of stadium operations.

There were a few day games this season when more than 300 gulls circled in and around the ballpark. Players and fans noticed, complaining the birds were making a mess. So Rinetti and his staff needed a solution - and fast.

''I looked up `bird abatement, Bay Area' online and came up with a company that provided these kites that are falcons that supposedly worked to keep seagulls away,'' Rinetti said.

They are doing the job so far. The duo even startled Span when the Giants played a Bay Bridge Series game in Oakland earlier this month.

''It got me at first. I thought they were real,'' Span said.

At the Giants' waterfront ballpark, as fans leave, another competition begins: gulls fly in from McCovey Cove to hunt for snacks.

''They eat food, scoop it up, compost it,'' Giants head groundskeeper Greg Elliott said. ''It's fine for us, but the birds are more of a nuisance for ballplayers.''

In 2012, the Giants were counting on a red-tailed hawk nicknamed Bruce Lee to solve their ''gull-drums.'' His presence kept the skies clear for a while. The team built a box for Lee to nest in, hoping to keep the gull-chasing predator at AT&T Park, Giants senior vice president of ballpark operations Jorge Costa explained at the time.

Yet Lee has since left his post, and, naturally, the gulls are back.

Eating leftovers is far from healthy for the birds, said marine biologist Dr. Jim Harvey, director of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in Monterey County.

''They're supposed to be eating fish and squid,'' he said, ''so eating human food, especially ballpark food, that's not good.''

Harvey, who also happens to be a longtime Giants season ticketholder, said he is hardly optimistic that baseball franchises will find a permanent, perfect solution because birds always adapt.

''You can put a physical barrier up, create netting around the whole park. But that's not going to happen,'' he said.

Span just wishes fans might consider doing their part by cleaning up their own messes, if only to benefit the birds - and keep them as far as possible from his center field workspace, of course.

''It is like a snow globe, and I'm surprised that one of them has not been struck by the ball,'' longtime Giants bench coach Ron Wotus said.

Freak ballpark accidents involving birds have happened in the past.

Hall of Fame left-handed pitcher Randy Johnson struck and killed a dove with a pitch in 2001. The now-infamous video clip shows the ball drilling the bird, sending an explosion of white feathers into the air.

In 1983, star Yankees outfielder Dave Winfield inadvertently took a gull's life in Toronto making a throw between innings. Police charged him with animal cruelty, but the charges were later dropped.

Wotus joked that if an accident does happen again, perhaps the Giants might take advantage.

''We can use a seagull ricochet for an RBI double,'' he said, chuckling.

                            • MLB roundup: Tigers defeat Yankees in brawl-filled contest
                              August 24, 2017

DETROIT -- Jose Iglesias hit a three-run triple in the seventh inning as the Detroit Tigers outlasted the New York Yankees for a 10-6 victory Thursday in a game that included eight ejections and three benches-clearing incidents.

Detroit cleanup hitter and 11-time All-Star Miguel Cabrera and New York catcher Austin Romine were tossed after a sixth-inning brawl. Yankees manager Joe Girardi and reliever Tommy Kahnle had just been ejected after Kahnle threw a pitch behind Cabrera.

New York reliever Dellin Betances was kicked out along with bench coach Rob Thomson in the bottom of the seventh inning after Betances drilled Tigers catcher James McCann in the helmet. Detroit reliever Alex Wilson was ejected after hitting New York third baseman Todd Frazier in the eighth. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was also ejected.

                              Diamondbacks 3, Mets 2

NEW YORK -- Robbie Ray pitched five strong innings in his return from the disabled list as Arizona beat New York.

Ray (10-5), who sustained a concussion when he was hit in the head by a 108 mph line drive in his previous start July 28, allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out nine. He struck out the side on 12 pitches in the first and didn't allow a hit until Yoenis Cespedes homered leading off the fourth.

The Mets ended a 2-6 homestand and lost yet another key player to injury Thursday, when All-Star outfielder Michael Conforto dislocated his left shoulder while swinging and missing in the fifth inning. The Mets have placed 22 players on the disabled list this season.

                              Rockies 3, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Pat Valaika hit a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth inning as Colorado came back to beat Kansas City.

Greg Holland, who allowed a three-run walk-off homer to former teammate Eric Hosmer on Wednesday, logged his 36th save.

Whit Merrifield and Brandon Moss homered for Kansas City.

                              Marlins 9, Phillies 8

PHILADELPHIA -- Giancarlo Stanton hit his major-league-leading 47th homer as Miami rallied to beat Philadelphia.

Stanton hit his latest homer before Miami rallied from a five-run deficit. A.J. Ellis and Christian Yelich went deep before J.T. Realmuto hit a game-tying inside-the-park homer and the tiebreaking sacrifice fly.

Rookie Rhys Hopkins homered and drove in three runs for the Phillies, who dropped three of four to the Marlins.

                              Rays 2, Blue Jays 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Corey Dickerson hit a late solo homer, and Kevin Kiermaier made two impressive defensive plays as Tampa Bay blanked Toronto.

Dickerson scored on Daniel Robertson's sacrifice fly and homered in the eighth as Tampa Bay won for the third time in four games. Kiermaier robbed Steve Pearce and Josh Donaldson in the fifth.

Alex Cobb labored through 4 1/3 innings for Tampa Bay. Steve Cishek (3-1) got the last two outs in the fifth for the win, and Alex Colome pitched a scoreless ninth for his 38th save.

                              Padres 4, Cardinals 3

ST. LOUIS -- Carlos Asuaje's RBI single snapped a tie in the ninth inning as San Diego dumped St. Louis for its first series win at Busch Stadium since April 2011.

With the score 2-2, pinch hitter Jabari Blash and Manuel Margot started the ninth with singles off reliever Sam Tuivailala (3-2). Facing Zach Duke in a lefty-lefty matchup, Asuaje grounded an 0-1 pitch just under diving first baseman Jedd Gyorko.

Jose Pirela added a sacrifice fly that scored Margot on a close play to tack on insurance for San Diego, which prior to this series had lost 14 of its past 18 games in St. Louis.

                              Dodgers 5, Pirates 2

PITTSBURGH -- Curtis Granderson, Yasmani Grandal and Adrian Gonzalez hit solo homers and Los Angeles picked up its 90th win.

A day after Rich Hill flirted with a perfect game and lost a no-hitter on the Pirates' walk-off win in the 10th, the Dodgers avoided losing back-to-back games for the first time since July 21-22 and became the first team this season and the fastest in Dodgers history to 90.

Los Angeles pounded out 14 hits but stranded 15.

                              Reds 4, Cubs 2

CINCINNATI -- Jose Peraza drove in the go-ahead runs with a pinch-hit, bases-loaded double in the bottom of the eighth, lifting Cincinnati past Chicago to avoid the sweep.

Ian Happ homered for Chicago, which had its five-game winning streak snapped. The Cubs now lead second-place Milwaukee by three games in the National League Central.

With two outs in the eighth and Pedro Strop on the mound for the Cubs, Eugenio Suarez was intentionally walked to load the bases. Peraza crushed a ball to center that eluded Ian Happ and bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double, driving in two runs to put Cincinnati up 3-2.

                              Indians 13, Red Sox 6

CLEVELAND -- Jay Bruce and Francisco Lindor homered, Yandy Diaz had four hits, and Cleveland continued its domination of Chris Sale with a victory over Boston.

Giovanny Urshela added a career-high four RBIs as Cleveland unleashed an 18-hit attack in a game started by Sale, the leading candidate for the American League Cy Young Award. The lefty yielded seven runs (six earned) in three innings.

The teams, both American League division leaders, split their four-game series.

                              White Sox 5, Twins 1

CHICAGO -- Derek Holland allowed just one run over six innings and struck out nine and Chicago provided the left-hander with plenty of offensive support in a victory over Minnesota.

Yolmer Sanchez homered and Kevan Smith had an RBI double for the White Sox, who also capitalized on some sloppy play by the Twins to build their lead and finish off the five-game series with back-to-back victories.

Holland (7-13) won for just the second time in his last 13 outings. He allowed just three hits and surrendered Minnesota's lone run on a Byron Buxton home run in the sixth inning.

                              • MLB Notebook: Tigers DH Cabrera, Yankees C Romine ejected in wild brawl
                                August 24, 2017

A total of eight players and coaches from the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers, including 11-time All-Star Miguel Cabrera, were ejected following three benches-clearing incidents on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park.

Cabrera and Yankees catcher Austin Romine were tossed after a benches-clearing brawl during the sixth inning. Yankees manager Joe Girardi and relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle had just been ejected after Kahnle threw a pitch behind Cabrera in the sixth.

Yankees reliever Dellin Betances and bench coach Rob Thomson were ejected in the bottom of the seventh after Betances drilled Tigers catcher James McCann in the helmet with a 98 mph fastball.

Tigers reliever Alex Wilson was tossed after hitting New York third baseman Todd Frazier with a pitch in the eighth. Detroit manager Brad Ausmus was also ejected.

Ausmus was ejected since managers automatically get ejected when a pitcher is tossed following a warning by umpires.

The scuffle between Cabrera and Romine began after reliever Aroldis Chapman finished his warmup pitches following Kahnle's ejection. Cabrera approached the plate and exchanged words with Romine. Romine removed his mask and Cabrera shoved him with both hands and then threw punches while Romine wrestled him to the ground.

Both benches and bullpens raced onto the field but no other players were ejected.

                                -- New York Mets
right fielder Michael Conforto suffered a dislocated left shoulder while batting in the fifth inning of the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Conforto grimaced and fell to the ground clutching his shoulder after he missed a 2-0 pitch from Diamondbacks left-hander Robbie Ray.

Mets manager Terry Collins and a couple of trainers raced to the side of Conforto, who got to a sitting position while clutching his shoulder. Conforto eventually stood up, still holding his shoulder, and was accompanied into the dugout by a trainer.

Conforto, who struck out in his first two at-bats Thursday, is batting .279 with 27 homers and 68 RBIs in his first full major league campaign.

-- The New York Mets will activate closer Jeurys Familia from the 60-day disabled list prior to Friday's game against the Washington Nationals, the team announced.

While Familia is set to return, the Mets announced that fellow right-hander Zack Wheeler will be shut down for the remainder of the season. Wheeler is on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his right arm.

Familia has been rehabbing from shoulder surgery with the Brooklyn Cyclones. The 27-year-old worked a scoreless inning on Wednesday and told reporters that is ready to return after having a blood clot removed from his shoulder in May.

Familia owns a 1-1 mark with a 3.86 ERA in 11 appearances in 2017 on the heels of serving a 15-game suspension for an offseason domestic violence incident. He was a first-time All-Star last year and led the majors with a team-record 51 saves, finishing with a 2.55 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings.

Wheeler has been struggling since his comeback from Tommy John surgery in 2015. The 27-year-old owned a 3-7 mark with a 5.21 ERA in 17 starts with the Mets this season. He has allowed 26 earned runs over his last 23 2/3 innings since June 13.

--The Minnesota Twins placed catcher Jason Castro on the seven-day concussion disabled list before Thursday's game against the Chicago White Sox.

Castro exited Wednesday's game with concussion symptoms in the sixth inning. It is unclear how Castro was injured.

Castro is hitting .229 (68-for-297) with seven homers and 36 RBIs in his first season with the Twins. He has started 86 of Minnesota's 126 games behind the plate.

To replace Castro, outfielder Zack Granite was recalled from Triple-A Rochester.
