BALTIMORE (AP) Corey Kluber pitched a three-hitter for his fifth career shutout, Jason Kipnis and Carlos Santana homered and the Cleveland Indians overpowered the Baltimore Orioles 12-0 Monday night for their season-high sixth straight victory.

Santana and Austin Jackson had three RBIs apiece for the AL Central leaders, whose recent surge has lifted them to a season-best six games over .500 (37-31).

Cleveland batted around in the fourth and fifth innings and sent eight men to the plate in a three-run sixth that made it 11-0. The Indians banged out a season-high 10 extra-base hits, including seven doubles.

Kluber (6-2) struck out 11 and walked none in his 12th career complete game and second shutout this season. The right-hander scattered three singles and struck out the side in the ninth.

Baltimore starter Dylan Bundy (7-6) allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings. The Orioles have dropped nine of 12 and yielded at least five runs in 16 straight games.

MARLINS 8, NATIONALS 7

MIAMI (AP) - Marcell Ozuna singled home the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning and Miami overcame an early six-run deficit to beat Washington.

Marlins slugger Justin Bour tied the game at 6 in the third with a grand slam, his 18th homer. Giancarlo Stanton also hit his 18th of the season to make it 7-all in the seventh.

Bryce Harper hit his 18th homer for the Nationals. Anthony Rendon also went deep before leaving in the fifth inning with a neck stinger he sustained diving for a grounder. He is day to day

Washington starter Tanner Roark squandered a 6-0 lead by giving up six runs in the third. Enny Romero (2-3) took the loss.

A.J. Ramos (2-3) worked a scoreless ninth and the Marlins won for the 11th time in their past 13 home games.

Miami lost to Atlanta on walk-off hits by Brandon Phillips on Saturday and Sunday.

ROYALS 4, RED SOX 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Whit Merrifield drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer and Kansas City topped Boston for its eighth win in nine games.

Jason Hammel (4-6) pitched seven sharp innings before turning it over to Mike Minor, who loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth. No. 9 hitter Christian Vazquez grounded out to end the threat.

Kelvin Herrera worked the ninth for his 16th save.

Red Sox reliever Blaine Boyer (0-1) gave up Merrifield's bouncing RBI single in the seventh. Boyer was lifted after Lorenzo Cain added an insurance run with a single, the second straight night Boston's stingy bullpen has allowed a pair of runs.

Red Sox relievers had thrown 26 straight scoreless innings before the slump.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run homer for Boston.

BLUE JAYS 7, RANGERS 6

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Kendrys Morales hit a go-ahead single after a tying single by Josh Donaldson in the ninth inning, and Toronto edged Texas in a matchup of AL Division Series opponents the past two seasons.

The Blue Jays won despite blowing a 5-1 lead in their first visit to Texas since last postseason, when they won the first two games in a best-of-five sweep that was their second straight ALDS victory over the two-time defending AL West champs.

Donaldson's single off closer Matt Bush scored Ryan Goins, who just beat the throw to second for a leadoff double. Morales' hit to the gap in left-center scored Donaldson from second after a stolen base and a walk. It was the third blown save in 11 chances for Bush (2-2).

Jeff Beliveau (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth, and Roberto Osuna worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 18th save in 22 chances.

Toronto's Steve Pearce and Adrian Beltre of the Rangers traded three-run doubles in the fourth, with Beltre's liner to right-center capping a five-run inning for a 6-5 lead that held up until the ninth.

Jose Bautista homered for the Blue Jays and Justin Smoak had three hits, including a career high-tying 20th homer.

CUBS 3, PADRES 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Willson Contreras hit a tying homer, Javier Baez scored the go-ahead run on an error and Wade Davis worked out of a ninth-inning jam for Chicago against San Diego.

Anthony Rizzo thrived in the leadoff spot again, extending his career-high hitting streak to 13 games by going 2 for 3 with an RBI as the Cubs won their second straight to improve to 35-34.

Jose Pirela and Yangervis Solarte each had a solo homer for the Padres, although Pirela's error in left field allowed the decisive run to score in the seventh.

Hector Rondon (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win, and Davis struck out Wil Myers and got Hunter Renfroe to ground out with runners on second and third for his 14th save in 14 chances.

Kirby Yates (1-1) allowed an unearned run but took the loss.

PIRATES 8, BREWERS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer, Gerrit Cole pitched seven strong innings and Pittsburgh beat Milwaukee.

Travis Shaw's leadoff homer in the second put the Brewers ahead 1-0 and set a franchise mark, with the Brewers scoring their 16th consecutive run via the long ball.

The Pirates took the lead in the third on Adam Frazier's two-run single off starter Matt Garza (3-3).

Cole (5-6) held the Brewers to one run and three hits.

BRAVES 9, GIANTS 0

ATLANTA (AP) - R.A. Dickey threw seven scoreless innings, Matt Adams hit another homer and Atlanta sent San Francisco to its seventh straight loss.

The 42-year-old Dickey (5-5) escaped a jam in the first to turn in his strongest outing of the season. He gave up just three hits and retired 16 of the last 17 hitters he faced.

The Giants' skid is the longest of a hugely disappointing season as they dropped to 26-46 and fell 20 games behind first-place Colorado in the NL West.

Adams homered in the fourth off Johnny Cueto (5-7) and added an RBI single in the eighth to key a seven-run outburst that made it a rout. He has 10 homers and 27 RBIs since being acquired from St. Louis on May 20.

REDS 7, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Scott Schebler and Scooter Gennett homered and Joey Votto snapped an eighth-inning tie with an RBI single, helping Cincinnati end a season-high nine-game losing streak with a victory over Tampa Bay.

Schebler led off the fifth with his 19th homer, tying Votto for the team lead. Gennett went deep for the second consecutive day, his first homers since hitting four in a game against St. Louis on June 6.

Votto's RBI single off Jose Alvarado (0-2) put the Reds in front for good after the Rays rallied to tie it on Steven Souza Jr.'s solo homer off Scott Feldman and Daniel Robertson's two-run shot off reliever Michael Lorenzen (4-2).

— US Open champ Brooks Koepka is the great-nephew of Dick Groat, the former Pirates’ SS who at age 86, is still on the Pitt Panthers’ basketball radio broadcast team.

— 20 days later, Hunter Strickland’s 6-game suspension from the Bryce Harper incident was upheld. What took so long?

— William & Mary grad transfer Greg Malinowski has committed to Georgetown; he scored 7.7 ppg at W&M last year, made 40% of his 3’s.

— Butler’s best recruit, Kyle Young, jumps from the Bulldogs to Ohio State, now coached by former Butler coach Chris Holtmann.

— Since becoming the Cubs’ leadoff hitter, Anthony Rizzo is 5-5 with a walk in the 1st inning.

— Marlins 8, Nationals 7— Miami was down 6-0 in this game.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) Colorado Rockies are 46-26, the Cinderella team of baseball; their pitching rotation has four rookie starters. Here is their experience and IP last year:

Tyler Chatwood: Most experienced of the five- he threw 158 IP LY, missed all of 2015, most of 2014 with an injury. Has started 20+ games three times in six MLB seasons. He’s tossed 90.1 innings this year.

German Marquez: 187.1 IP LY, only 20.2 of them in majors. He’s thrown 63.2 innings this year, technically still his rookie season.

Jeff Hoffman: 150 IP LY, 31.1 of them in majors; 76 IP this year, 32 of them in the majors.

Antonio Senzatela: Threw only 34.1 innings LY, has thrown 83.1 this year, his rookie season. He threw 144 innings in 2014, 154 in 2015.

Kyle Freeland: Threw 162 innings LY, has thrown 81.2 this year, his rookie season.

Pitching home games in Coors Field figures to be more stressful than most big league ballparks; can these rookie pitchers stand up for 3.5 more months? I’m not saying they can’t, but it is a fair question to ask.

12) Golfers Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger were teammates at Florida State in 2012; now they’ve won on the PGA Tour in consecutive weeks.

Koepka finished 11th in the ACC tournament in 2012. Wonder what those other 10 guys are thinking today?

I looked at the 10 names who finished ahead of Koepka; only ones I recognized were Berger and Ollie Schneiderjans, who were in a 4-way tie for 7th.

Last seven golf majors have all been won by first-time major winners.

11) Former Minnesota Timberwolves’ GM David Kahn told this story on CBSSports.com:

“In 2009, just days after my May 22 hiring as President of Basketball Operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the agent for Steph Curry told me that Steph’s father, Dell, did not want his son to be drafted by Minnesota — “No offense,” as I recall Jeff Austin, his agent saying to me at the Chicago draft combine.”

Archie Manning did the same thing with the Chargers and his son Eli, forcing a trade, so Lavar Ball is not the first dad to meddle in his son’s dealings, he is just the loudest one.

10) Kahn didn’t do too well with Minnesota; he went on NBAtv once during a summer league game in Las Vegas, and Chris Webber, the analyst on the game, ripped him to shreds over some of his moves. When Kahn compared one of the Wolves to Webber as a player, Webber lit into him and the interview quickly degenerated from there.

9) Obscure movie trivia: At the end of The Bodyguard, when Kevin Costner’s character is guarding some police chief at a Rotary Club banquet, the actor who introduces the chaplain to give the invocation is Bert Remsen, who played the basketball coach Gabe Kaplan’s team had to beat at the end of the great basketball movie Fast Break, one of my favorite movies.

8) I’m not sure which one confuses me more, Michael Strahan as host of the $10,000 Pyramid or Drew Carey hosting The Price is Right. I watched both of these shows a lot during my misguided youth, when Dick Clark/Bob Barker were the hosts.

If they bring back Gambit and Wink Martindale isn’t the host, I ain’t gonna be happy.

7) Washington Redskins benefit from a Supreme Court ruling in a dispute over trademark issues- it likely increases the chances of the Redskins being allowed to keep the trademark for their controversial nickname.

6) Earlier this spring, I read a cool article on ESPN.com about Houston Rockets’ coach Mike D’Antoni and his wife, who have been together for a long time.

This from the article: “Many of D’Antoni’s best qualities as a coach— patience, humor, a refusal to scream and yell for the sake of screaming and yelling— are infused with her advice.”

it was just cool to read that a guy can be a really good coach, a good guy, and be happily married.

5) Cleveland Cavaliers fired their GM David Griffin Monday night; after all, they’re 161-85 the last three years, with three straight trips to the Finals and one NBA title- Griffin is obviously a slacker.

Cut the pretense; name Lebron James as GM on personnel side, hire a paper pusher to do the office work, and be done with it.

4) Injury updates:

— Reds’ SS Zack Cosart is hitting .320 but is on the DL now with a quad injury.
— Bronx Bomber SS prospect Gleyber Torres needs Tommy John surgery on his non-throwing elbow after he was hurt in a collision at home plate— he is out for the year…
— Michael Brantley (Indians) goes on the DL with a sprained ankle.
— JJ Hardy is out 4-6 weeks with a broken wrist; Ruben Tejada will get his AB’s- they’re not going to move Manny Machado back to short.

3) Major leaguers whose at-bats end up the most in either a walk-strikeout-HR: Joey Gallo 55.9%, Chris Davis 55.6%.

2) ESPN the Magazine is usually a waste of time, but their most recent issue, with Manny Machado on the cover, has some interesting stuff in it about Hispanic players playing pro baseball and some of the stuff they go thru when they’re here, living in a foreign country.

If you own a major league team, how can you not insist that your coaches/trainers be bilingual?

We have a NY-Penn League team about 10 miles from where I live, Class A team of the Astros; I met someone last summer who is a tutor for the players on that team, helping them learn English as they start their pro baseball careers. Has to be tough living somewhere where you don’t know the language.

1) April 5, 2015, the Padres traded Cameron Maybin, Carlos Quentin, Matt Wisler and a draft pick to Atlanta for closer Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton. San Diego went 74-88, 18 games out of first place in the NL West. Manager Bud Black was fired during the season, his 8th with the Friars.

222 days later, on November 13, 2015, the Padres traded Kimbrel to Boston, for four prospects, two of whom have yet to make the majors, as well as 2B Carlos Asuaje and OF Manuel Margot. Asuaje is back in AAA, Margot has shown promise but is hurt right now.

San Diego is 96-136 since that trade; their GM, AL Preller, has been suspended twice by MLB for a month each for misdeeds, once when he worked with Texas, once with the Padres.

But hey, Preller went to Cornell so he must be smarter than the rest of us. Forget that Bud Black is now managing the Colorado Rockies, who are 46-26 and are the surprise team in baseball. San Diego is 28-42 this season, 17 games behind the Rockies.

If I owned the Padres, I’d be wondering what the hell is going on.

MLB notebook: Reds place Arroyo, Cozart on DL
June 19, 2017

The Cincinnati Reds placed right-hander Bronson Arroyo and shortstop Zack Cozart on the 10-day disabled list Monday.

The move comes one day after the 40-year-old Arroyo told reporters that there is a possibility his 14-year major league career might be over as he deals with a strained right shoulder.

"We tried to patch it up and it worked for a while, but I've been hit around the yard for a while now," Arroyo said after allowing five runs and seven hits in three innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"It gets stiff. The cortisone isn't working anymore. Have I thought, 'This time might be my last time on the field?' Yeah."

Arroyo, who owns a 3-6 mark with a 7.35 ERA, is attempting a comeback after missing 2 1/2 seasons with arm and shoulder issues, including Tommy John surgery.

Cozart, who is nursing a strained right quadrieps, is batting .320 with nine homers and 33 RBIs in 58 games this season.

--Baltimore Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy told reporters that his broken wrist will sideline him four to six weeks.

"We did the CT scan today and it just kind of showed what they saw on the X-ray," Hardy said before his team's series opener against the visiting Cleveland Indians. "It's a small bone, and it's a non-displaced fracture. They say four to six weeks for the bone to heal, and to get back into baseball activities."

A three-time Gold Glove recipient, Hardy sustained the injury after being struck in the wrist by a fastball from St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn in the fourth inning of Sunday's game. The 34-year-old Hardy was replaced in the sixth by infielder Ruben Tejada.

A broken bone is nothing new for Hardy, who missed six weeks of the 2016 season with a fractured foot. He sustained that injury while fouling a ball off his foot.

--Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is not in the starting lineup for his team's series-opening game against the host Kansas City Royals.

Pedroia was hit in the back by a pitch from Houston Astros reliever James Hoyt in the seventh inning on Sunday night. The former American League MVP was taken to a Houston hospital for X-rays on his rib area.

Josh Rutledge is scheduled to play second base in place of the 33-year-old Pedroia, who is batting .296 with two homers and 25 RBIs in 55 games this season. Rutledge, 28, is hitting .240 with nine RBIs in 34 games this season.

--New York Yankees top prospect Gleyber Torres will miss the remainder of the season after the team announced the infielder needs to undergo Tommy John surgery on his non-throwing left elbow.

The Yankees said Torres has a torn ligament in his left elbow but is expected to recover after surgery in time for spring training next year.

Torres was seen by the team's head physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad, at Presbyterian Hospital in New York and diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

--The Chicago White Sox placed center fielder Leury Garcia on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained finger on his left hand.

Garcia, 26, did not start Sunday for the seventh straight game, being available only as a pinch runner. The move is retroactive to June 16.

Garcia is hitting .298 with nine doubles, one triple, six home runs, 22 RBIs, 28 runs scored and a .345 on-base percentage in 56 games this season.

The Yankees were swept in a four-game set against the Athletics in the Bay Area, losing three heartbreaking one-run games. They have dropped six in a row to fritter away their lead in the American League East to just a half of a game. They'll look to rebound against an Angels team that kicked off the losing streak with back-to-back wins over the Yankees in Anaheim on June 13-14. Michael Pineda has been a stopper for the Pinstripers, with the Yankees going 6-0 over his past six home starts against a team with a losing record, and 7-1 in his past eight overall against sub-.500 clubs. The Yanks are also 9-3 over his past 12 outings overall.

Hottest pitcher: Ervin Santana, Twins (8-4, 2.56 ERA)

Santana is just 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in three outings in the month of June, but his overall body of work has been outstanding this season. He has been even better against the White Sox, who haven't had an answer for him in two previous meetings in 2017. In fact, the White Sox have scraped together just three hits and three walks in 15 scoreless innings against Santana. The Twins are 0-4 over his past four home starts, and they're just 3-10 over his past 13 starts working on five days' rest. However, the Twins are 4-1 over his past five outings against AL Central Division foes and 7-2 in his past nine against teams with a losing overall mark. And the White Sox have dropped five of their past six insider the division, so that bodes well for a Santana bounce-back game.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Moore, Giants (2-7, 6.00 ERA)

The southpaw Moore makes another road start, and that usually doesn't end well for he or the Giants, at least this season. The left-hander is 0-4 with a 9.24 ERA in eight road starts this season, allowing 38 earned runs with seven homers, 19 walks and a .364 opponent batting average over 37 innings. He has gotten progressively worse, going 1-3 with a 4.80 ERA in five starts in April, 1-3 with a 5.14 ERA in six starts in May and 0-1 with an 11.08 ERA in three outings in June so far. He has been tagged to the tune of a .393 opponent average in his three June outings. The Giants are also 1-9 in their past 10 road games against teams with a losing record while going 3-13 in their past 16 vs. RHP.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (5-1 past six games overall)

The Pirates have enjoyed an 'under' run lately, as either they are getting solid production from their pitching staff or their offense takes a night off. Gerrit Cole pitched them to an 8-1 road win at Miller Park in the series opener on Monday, and 'under' bettors were treated to a nice win. There were nine runs on the board at the stretch with a total of 9 1/2 last night. Relievers did under bettors a solid with no runs allowed over the final two frames. The 'under' is 6-1-1 in Pittsburgh's past eight overall, and 6-1-1 in their past eight divisional games, too. The under has also hit in five of their past six vs. RHP. The under has also been an impressive 9-1-1 over the past 11 meetings at Miller Park, and 15-5-2 in the past 22 meetings overall.

Biggest OVER run: Rays (9-2-1 past 12 games overall)

The 'over' has been a frequent play for the Rays, as their pitching staff just isn't what it used to be and their offense has been respectable. Tampa Bay was tripped up 7-3 at home against Cincinnati in Monday's interleague home opener, as the Reds snapped a nine-game losing streak. The Rays are allowing 5.2 runs per game over the past 10 outings, and they're averaging 5.8 runs per game on offense over the past 12. That's a nice recipe for success for 'over' bettors. The over has been a frequent happening for Cincinnati lately, too, going 5-1-1 in their past seven road games and 7-2-1 in their past 10 overall. And the over is 5-1 in Amir Garrett's past six outings, while going 4-1 in his past five on the road.

Matchup to watch: Royals vs. Red Sox

The Red Sox look for a little revenge in Game 2 of the series after the Royals won 4-2 in the opener. Chris Sale will toe the slab at Kauffman against rookie Matt Strahm in what appears to be a mismatch on paper. The Red Sox are just 1-4 over their past five vs. LHP, however, although they're 4-1 in Sale's past five outings overall and 5-2 in his past seven tries against teams with a losing overall record. The Royals have been hot lately, winning eight of their past nine overall, but they, too, have struggled at left-handed pitching. They're just 4-9 in their past 13 vs. LHP, including 1-5 over their past six at home against southpaws. The Red Sox have won just two of the past nine meetings overall between the two teams. Total bettors might look to the 'over', which is 10-3-3 in the past 16 meetings, and 6-2-1 in the past nine in K.C.

Betcha didn’t know: Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger became the quickest player in major league history to reach 21 home runs, needing just 51 games to hit blackjack. His two clouts helped bail out Clayton Kershaw in a surprising slugfest against the Mets in Monday's series opener. Cody's dad, Clay Bellinger, played in the majors from 1999-2002 with the Yankees and Angels, posting just 12 home runs in 183 career games. Bellinger has also recorded five multi-homer games already, with only Mark McGwire producing more games with two or more homers (seven) in his rookie campaign.

NL WEST SHOWDOWN

Winning streaks are on the line when Arizona and Colorado, probably the two most surprising teams in baseball this season, begin a three-game series at Coors Field. Rookie right-hander German Marquez (5-3, 4.19 ERA) starts for the Rockies, who have won five straight and own the best record in the National League at 46-26. They are 20 games above .500 for the first time since 2009. ''The fans and the people of Denver are starting to get a hint that we're for real,'' third baseman Nolan Arenado said after his game-ending homer Sunday.

Zack Greinke (8-3, 3.00) pitches for the Diamondbacks, winners of seven in a row and just a game behind Colorado in the NL West at 44-26. This is Arizona's best 70-game start in team history.

FLASH SALE

Red Sox ace Chris Sale comes off his best start in more than a month - and his only loss during that span - when he takes the mound at Kansas City. The major league leader in strikeouts allowed one run and four hits over eight innings while striking out 10 in a 1-0 loss at Philadelphia last Thursday. Boston expects to be without Dustin Pedroia for the second consecutive game after the second baseman was hit by a pitch Sunday night in Houston, causing him to spit up blood. Pedroia was drilled in the left ribcage by a 92 mph fastball from James Hoyt. X-rays were negative and an MRI confirmed Pedroia did not break any ribs. He is day to day, but manager John Farrell said it's unlikely Pedroia will play before the series finale Wednesday.

GLAD TO BE HOME

After dropping the final six games of a 1-6 road trip in California, rookie slugger Aaron Judge and the Yankees return to the Bronx on their longest losing streak of the season. Up first, a rematch with the Angels. Michael Pineda (7-3, 3.71) pitches for New York, which lost two of three to Los Angeles last week. Parker Bridwell (1-0, 2.79) makes his second start for the Angels, taking the rotation spot vacated when Matt Shoemaker went on the disabled list.

MINNY STEP BACK

The Twins will try to rally after a deflating four-game sweep against Cleveland knocked them out of first place in the AL Central. Minnesota has dropped seven of nine overall and is just a game over .500 (34-33) entering a series against the White Sox. Ervin Santana (8-4, 2.56) can spark a turnaround when he faces Chicago left-hander Derek Holland (5-6, 3.79).

FRONT-RUNNING

Keeping St. Louis leadoff hitter Matt Carpenter off the bases has been nearly impossible of late. The first baseman has five walks over his past two games and a .528 on-base percentage during a 12-game on-base streak, a breakout stretch that followed a 5-for-41 slump. All that table setting hasn't done St. Louis much good, though - the Cards have dropped five of six heading into a three-game series against Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Yadier Molina and Tommy Pham both homered in a seven-run 11th inning to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-1 on Tuesday night.

Stephen Piscotty had a two-run double off Casey Fien after Edubray Ramos (0-5) started the inning with two walks. Molina and Pham followed with homers as the Cardinals had their biggest output of the season in an inning.

Fien gave up both homers and then a single to Chad Huffman and double to Carpenter before the pitcher was removed. Philadelphia has now lost 12 of its last 13 games.

Kevin Siegrist (1-1) pitched one inning in relief to earn the win.

Mike Leake started the game for St. Louis and allowed one run and three hits in six innings.

Jeremy Hellickson gave up six hits and a run in seven innings. His only blemish was a solo homer for Jedd Gyorko in the second inning.

Philadelphia scored its lone run of the game on a Maikel Franco RBI single after Leake walked the first two batters in the fourth inning.

ROCKIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado hit a two-run triple in the eighth inning, and the surging Rockies rallied past the Diamondbacks in the opening game of their NL West showdown.

Carlos Gonzalez homered and saved a run with a diving catch of David Peralta's line drive in the fifth to help Colorado win its sixth straight. The NL West leaders extended their advantage over third-place Arizona to two games. Second-place Los Angeles, which began the night trailing the Rockies by a half-game, played late against the New York Mets.

Peralta and Paul Goldschmidt homered for the Diamondbacks, who had won seven straight.

Arizona and Colorado, perhaps baseball's two biggest surprises this season, both entered on a roll. The Diamondbacks are a major league-best 23-9 since May 15, while the Rockies' 23-11 mark since then ranks third.

ANGELS 8, YANKEES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Cameron Maybin hit a tiebreaking home run off struggling reliever Tyler Clippard to spark a three-run seventh inning, and the Angels beat New York to extend the Yankees' losing streak to seven games - their longest in a single season since April 2007.

Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 24th home run and Gary Sanchez his 12th as New York climbed back from a 3-0 deficit.

But then Cameron drove the second pitch from Clippard (1-4) into the left-field seats, Kole Calhoun doubled to the right-center gap, Albert Pujols flied out to the center-field warning track and Yunel Escobar hit an RBI triple just over the glove of a leaping Brett Gardner at the left-field wall.

Clippard walked off to boos after allowing runs for the third time in four outings.

RED SOX 8, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Chris Sale shut down the Royals while pitching into the ninth inning, and a rag-tag bunch of Red Sox filling in for injured starters pounded their way to a victory that moved them into first place in the AL East.

Sale (9-3) gave up a homer to Mike Moustakas in the second and a two-run shot to Jorge Bonifacio in the ninth before departing two outs shy of his second consecutive complete game. He allowed four hits and fanned 10, pushing his major league-leading strikeout total to 146 this season.

More importantly, he got a win after going the distance in a 1-0 loss to Philadelphia last week.

Xander Bogaerts and Sandy Leon each drove in a pair of runs for Boston, which got plenty of production from a lineup missing Pablo Sandoval, Dustin Pedroia and Mitch Moreland to various injuries.

NATIONALS 12, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Bryce Harper started the scoring with a two-run single that extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and Gio Gonzalez pitched seven innings to help the Nationals beat the Marlins 12-3 on Tuesday night.

Daniel Murphy had two RBIs and hit his 12th homer for the Nationals. Teammate Stephen Drew had three hits and three RBIs, and Ryan Zimmerman drove in three runs with a double and a single.

The NL East leaders went 7 for 14 with runners in scoring position.

Gonzalez (7-1) allowed three runs, struck out eight and won his fourth straight decision. The left-hander, who grew up in nearby Hialeah, improved to 7-3 in 13 starts against his hometown team with an ERA of 2.19.

Marcell Ozuna hit his 19th homer for the Marlins.

RAYS 6, REDS 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Corey Dickerson went deep, Alex Cobb threw seven solid innings and the Rays beat the Reds.

Dickerson had his 29th multihit game of the season with two hits. He drove in Tampa Bay's first run with a third-inning single, then capped their scoring with his 16th home run in the fourth.

Cobb (6-5) gave up two runs and eight hits while striking out six. Alex Colome pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

Joey Votto hit his 20th home and Eugenio Suarez drove in another run off Colome, but the Reds lost for the 10th time in 11 games.

Amir Garrett (3-6) allowed six runs in 3 2/3 innings.

GIANTS 6, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Austin Slater hit a three-run homer after the Braves botched a potential double-play grounder, sparking the Giants to a victory over Atlanta that snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Matt Moore (3-7) pitched seven strong innings for his first win in over a month, and the shaky Giants bullpen protected the lead.

Julio Teheran (6-5) was up 2-0 and cruising toward his first home win since opening night at SunTrust Park, only to be let down by his defense in the eighth inning. The Braves were charged with three errors in all, the biggest coming when shortstop Dansby Swanson dropped a throw trying to turn a double play.

On the very next pitch, Slater lined one into the right-field seats for his second homer of the season. The Giants went on to score five runs in the inning, also taking advantage of throwing errors by reliever Ian Krol and first baseman Matt Adams.

Mark Melancon worked the ninth for his 11th save in 15 chances.

PIRATES 7, BREWERS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Chad Kuhl got his first victory since April, Andrew McCutchen homered for the fifth time in seven games and the Pirates beat the Brewers.

Jose Osuna's three-run homer highlighted the Pirates' six-run first inning. McCutchen's two-run single and David Freese's RBI hit accounted for the other runs, all scored before Zach Davies (7-4) recorded a second out.

Kuhl (2-6) went 12 starts without a win after beating Atlanta 6-4 on April 8. The young right-hander allowed two runs and seven hits over five innings, walked two and matched his career high of six strikeouts.

CUBS 4, PADRES 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo hit another leadoff home run to help Mike Montgomery get his first win of the season in the Cubs' victory over the Padres.

Rizzo homered on the second pitch from Jhoulys Chacin (6-6) and was the third leading off in seven games since Rizzo was moved to the top of the order by manager Joe Maddon. In those seven games, he is 6 for 6 with a walk to open the first inning.

It also extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games and came on the day Rizzo took a call from the league office about a collision at home plate with Padres catcher Austin Hedges the previous night.

Rookie Ian Happ also homered for the Cubs.

Montgomery (1-3) allowed three hits and two walks in six innings, striking out four.

ORIOLES 6, INDIANS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Manny Machado went 4 for 4, homered twice and drove in four runs to help the Orioles beat Cleveland and end the Indians' six-game winning streak.

After the Orioles rallied from a 5-2 deficit to pull even, Machado doubled off Bryan Shaw (1-2) in the seventh inning and scored on a double by Adam Jones.

Machado's first four-hit game since last August lifted his batting average 13 points to .227. He hit a solo homer in the first and tied it with a three-run drive in the fifth.

Miguel Castro (1-0) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to earn his first big league victory.

Brad Brach pitched the ninth for his 13th save, retiring Yan Gomes on a deep fly ball with runners on the corners and two outs.

RANGERS 6, BLUE JAYS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Carlos Gomez homered in a four-run first inning, Nick Martinez allowed two hits while taking a shutout into the seventh and the Rangers beat the Blue Jays.

Adrian Beltre had a solo homer in the eighth for his 2,960th career hit as the Rangers (35-35) got back to .500 while the Blue Jays (34-36) dropped to 0-8 this season when trying to reach the break-even mark for the first time.

Toronto beat two-time defending AL West champion Texas in a Division Series each of the past two seasons, as the AL East winner in 2015 and as a wild-card last year.

Delino DeShields led off for the Rangers with a bunt single and scored on an RBI groundout by Beltre before Gomez's seventh homer and run-scoring hits from Jonathan Lucroy and Mike Napoli.

Martinez (2-3) didn't allow more than one baserunner in any inning, giving up one run and striking out two in 6 1/3 innings for the right-hander's first win since May 19 at Detroit.

TWINS 9, WHITE SOX 7

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Miguel Sano and Kennys Vargas each hit a long home run to help the Twins bounce back from a demoralizing sweep by beating the White Sox.

Sano hit his 17th homer and Vargas added a three-run shot as the Twins overcame a rough outing from Ervin Santana (9-4), who gave up six runs on 10 hits and struck out six in five innings. Brandon Kintzler pitched the ninth for his 18th save in 21 tries.

Jose Abreu went 4 for 5 with a home run and two doubles, and Avisail Garcia had a homer and two RBIs for the White Sox. Derek Holland (5-7) allowed seven runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings for Chicago.

13) Cavaliers really didn’t consult Lebron James before they fired GM David Griffin? Does this mean they’ve given up hope of Lebron being in Cleveland after next season?

Related item: the NBA Draft is Thursday, as in tomorrow. In the history of the world, how many teams fire their GM three days before the bleeping draft?

12) How long will Griffin be out of work? Cleveland was in the Finals the last three years (I know, they’ve got Lebron which is all that really matters) so some NBA team will be happy to sign the guy up, right?

Will the fact that he went to Arizona State instead of an Ivy League school hinder him in finding another job? Listen to the guy talk; he is very sharp, yet Cleveland just fired him, apparently against the wishes of Lebron James, an iconic player.

10) Why teams lose: On June 19, 2016, the Mariners traded Chris Taylor to the Dodgers for Zach Lee. Taylor is hitting ,302 with 32 RBI for the Dodgers- he bats in the middle of the order.

Lee was selected off waivers by the Padres last December and just got DFA’d, meaning he is either headed back to AAA, or to free agency. He has an 8.53 ERA in 12.2 IP in the majors.

9) Clayton Kershaw has given up 17 homers in 103.1 IP this season; he allowed 8 taters in 149 IP all of last year.

MLB notebook: Red Sox 3B Sandoval back on DL
June 20, 2017

Boston Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval is back on the 10-day disabled list with a left inner ear infection after the former two-time All-Star and World Series MVP missed 31 games earlier this season with a right knee sprain.

Sandoval, 30, has been in and out of the lineup since he returned from his knee injury on May 31. Sandoval is batting just .212 with four home runs and 12 RBIs over 32 games this season.

In corresponding moves, the Red Sox recalled infielder Deven Marerro and first baseman Sam Travis from Triple-A Pawtucket. Right-handed relief pitcher Austin Maddox was also optioned to Pawtucket after Monday's game.

Marrero, 26, hit .157 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 33 prior games with the Red Sox this season. Travis, 23, made his major league debut with Boston on May 24 and is 8-for-17 (.471) at the plate in six big league games this year.

--The Los Angeles Angels placed right-handed reliever Bud Norris on the 10-day disabled list due to a knee injury.

Norris felt knee soreness during Sunday's game and later underwent an MRI exam. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said no structural damage was found.

Norris has been the club's top reliever this season and is 1-2 with 11 saves and a 2.43 ERA.

The Angels recalled right-hander Mike Morin from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill the roster opening.

-- Adam Engel is returning to the Chicago White Sox's 25-man roster after the team recalled the outfielder from Triple-A Charlotte.

Engel, 25, made his major league debut with the White Sox on May 27 against the Detroit Tigers. He appeared in eight games during his first stint with the team from May 27 to June 9, batting .300 (6-for-20) with three runs scored and four steals.

Over 46 games with Charlotte this season, Engel hit .218 with eight home runs, 19 RBIs and four steals.

Chicago (31-37) is last in the American League Central, six games behind the division-leading Cleveland Indians.
