            Monday MLB Best Bet
            San Diego vs. Cincinnati

It's a very light board to kick off the week of MLB action tonight and chances are there will be a few other games featuring more prominent contenders that will garner more attention from the betting public tonight. But I see tonight's series opener between the Padres and Reds as one of the better betting opportunities on this light board.

Neither team has done much winning this year to garner any sort of consistent support from the general betting masses, but that doesn't mean we can't cash in on a game between two basement dwellers.

A winning wager isn't worth more simply because it was placed on a more popular game, and often times you can find “easier” winners in these games that get lost in the shuffle.

            Hopefully that's the case tonight.

BetOnline.ag Odds: San Diego (+101) vs. Cincinnati (-111); Total set at 9.5

Based on the opening line, this game has already seen some sharp bettors get out early on this game and show some support to the visiting Padres on the ML. San Diego's line has dropped from +115 open to it's current price with VegasInsider.com showing about 35% support. San Diego did sweep the Reds back in mid-June, and the finale of that series was won by tonight's starter Jhoulys Chacin (4-2).

Sometimes it's as simple as past results that bettors like to back – and the underdog - in games featuring two teams nobody wants, and that appears to be the case with this move. Neither team has been playing great baseball of late, but the Padres are 6-0 SU the last six times Chacin has started for them, and with plus-money odds on him tonight, you can see why the Padres have garnered some support here.

However, with most of the value sucked out of the San Diego ML option now, and the Reds and there one win in their last four games aren't something I'm willing to lay any sort of juice with. So it's on to the total in another line that's already seen some movement.

Tonight's total has stayed at 9.5 the entire time, but after opening at -110, the majority of support has come in on the low side, putting the 'under' as chalk. I get the line of thinking in that bad teams typically don't score often and putting two of them together – especially with Chacin's hot streak of late on the mound – should lead to a low-scoring game.

Yet, the flip side of that coin is that bad teams also give up plenty of runs to lose the majority of their tilts, and putting two of them in the same game should lead to quite a few runs scored. That, along with a preference to be in the betting minority here – VegasInsider.com has about 40% on the 'over' right now – is the approach I'm taking tonight.

Cincinnati has always been a hitter's ballpark, and Reds home games this year have averaged 10.23 runs per game. That's only equated to a 29-27 O/U record for Cincinnati, but the 5.45 runs/game they've allowed here usually puts them behind the eight-ball and if Cincy's bats are going (which is quite often the case), that's when the near .500 O/U record takes shape.

But the Padres give up 5.48 runs/game away from home this season and when you put that number together with the Reds runs allowed/home game you get nearly 11 runs. That's more than enough to cash an 'over' wager tonight.

Finally, the Padres are 7-2-1 O/U in their last 10 road games on the whole, and tonight's starter for Cincy – Tim Adleman – has really fallen off a cliff of late. Adleman's 7.71 ERA over his last three starts is extremely rough, and with the 13 runs Cincinnati gave up yesterday vs. St Louis, Adleman's not going to get much help from his tired bullpen when they enter the fray. The Reds are 9-4 O/U when Adleman gets the call after Cincinnati lost last time out, and the Padres are 7-3-1 O/U themselves when coming off a defeat.

With everyone expecting next to nothing in this game between two teams patiently waiting for 2018 to arrive, I believe we see some offensive fireworks tonight in a game that could reach double digits before the 7th inning arrives.

            Odds per - BetOnline.ag

                August 7, 2017

Hottest team: Orioles (7-2 past nine overall, 10-4 past 14 at home)

The Orioles fought back from an 0-2 deficit against the Tigers, evening the four-game set at two apiece after a sound beating of Detroit on Sunday behind Ubaldo Jimenez. Over their past seven games the O's are averaging 5.8 runs per game while allowing just 2.9 runs per outing. That's the type of production that will lead to many wins, and they've mostly been doing it without Mark Trumbo (ribs). Now Baltimore hits the road, facing an Angels team spinning its wheels. The Halos were stunned at home when the A's scored five in the top of the eighth to win it 11-10.The Angels are 6-3 over their past nine games, but they're 1-4 over J.C. Ramirez's past five starts working on full rest.

Coldest team: Giants (4-6 past 10 games)

It's slim pickings on Monday with just 14 temas in action, but the Giants have been cold pretty much all season. They have won three of their past four games, but now they'll face the World Champion Cubs, a team playing much better of late. Chicago has won 11 of their past 12 on the road, and they're 20-7 in their past 27 starts against a left-handed starter. That doesn't bode well for Matt Moore, as the Giants are 3-8 over his past 11 when working on full rest. The Giants are also 1-4 over his past five starts, and 1-6 over his past seven at home.

Hottest pitcher: MaxScherzer, Nationals (12-5, 2.21 ERA)

Scherzer takes the ball as the active leader in the majors in ERA with Clayton Kershaw still on the 10-day disbled list. The man with two different colored eyes hasn't had the best of run support at times this season, but everything is coming up aces lately. Washington is 5-2 over his past seven outing, and they're averaging 9.0 runs per game over the past four outings. The Nationals are 27-11 over Scherzer's past 38 starts overall, 8-3 over his past 11 at home against a team with a losing overall mark and 6-1 across his past seven assignments overall.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Moore, Giants (3-11, 5.80 ERA)

It's been a struggle for Moore all season, as the opposition is hitting .323 aginst him over 139 1/3 innings with a 1.58 WHIP. Moore has yielded the second-most earned runs in the majors at 79, one fewer than Padres SP Clayton Richard, alhough Moore has logged nearly 17 fewer innings. It doesn't get easier for Moore, as he'll be facing the world champs. Chicago has won 11 of its past 12 road games, while going 21-7 across Jake Arrieta's past 28 away games. The Cubs have won four of the past five in this series, although they're just 2-5 in their past seven trips to the Bay Area.

Biggest UNDER run: Cubs (28-11 past 39 road games)

The 'under' has hit frequently over the past 39 games away from the Friendly Confines, going 28-11. In addition, the under is 37-17-3 across the past 57 for the Cubbies against the National League West Division. And for what it's worth, which probably isn't much, the under is 7-0-1 over Chicago's past eight games on a Monday. On the other side of the ledger, the under is 8-2-1 over the past 11 home games for Moore, while going 5-0-1 in hisp ast six at home against a team with an overall winning mark. The over has hit in five of the past six between these two clubs.

Biggest OVER run: Tigers (11-0 past 11 vs. NL Central)

The over has been hitting frequently in games started by Jordan Zimmermann, and their most recent games agianst NL Central teams has been especially entertaining. The over is 4-1-1 over Zimm's past six road outing and 4-1 across his past five starts overall. Zimmermann has been involved in plenty of high-scoring outings when opening a series, too, as the over is 8-1 over his past nine during Game 1 of a series. The over is also a perfect 11-0 over his past 11 against the NL Central, while the over has connected in a perfect 7-of-7 in each of the past seven meetings in this interleague series.

Matchup to watch: Royals vs. Cardinals

The Cardinals head west on Interstate 70 for their interleague rivalry series against the Royals. The Cards have dominated in recent seasons, going 27-11 over their past 38 trips to Kansas City. St. Louis hopes Carlos Martinez can bounce back, as they're just 2-6 over his past eight outings and 1-4 in his past five on the road. Conversely, Kansas City has won eight of Ian Kennedy's past 10 outings, and they're 5-1 over his past six against teams with a losing overall mark. The Royals are also 11-4 over their past 16 against NL Central foes, while going 10-3 over their past 13 against right-handed starting pitching.

Betcha didn’t know: The 'under' continues to hit in this I-70 rivalry, going 10-2-5 over the past 17 in this series. the under is also 4-1-3 across the past eight at 'The K' in Kansas City. The over has been the story for the Cardinals in interleague games of late, going a perfect 9-0 over their past nine interleague outings and 4-0 in their past four against teams from the American League. The under is 17-6-4 across the past 27 for St. Louis, however, and 5-1-2 over their past eight on the road. The under is also 7-1-2 in K.C.'s past 10 vs. NL Central foes, 7-1 in theirp ast eight against losing teams and 7-3 in their past 10 vs. RHP.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-175) at Giants

Biggest public underdog: Padres (+125) at Reds

Biggest line move: Pirates (-130 to -155) vs. Tigers

                  • Dodgers' rotation has depth to go with star power
                    August 7, 2017

It may seem like everything has gone right for the Los Angeles Dodgers this year, but that's actually not the case.

Clayton Kershaw hasn't pitched since July 23 because of a back injury, and promising left-hander Julio Urias was lost to shoulder problems.

The reason the Dodgers are on pace to win 115 games is because no matter who has been on the mound, their starting pitching has been sharp. Los Angeles has six players with at least 16 starts for the Dodgers, and they all have ERAs of 3.84 or lower.

And that doesn't even include Yu Darvish, who had 10 strikeouts in his debut for the Dodgers on Friday night after being acquired in a trade from Texas.

This past week has been a microcosm of the season. Los Angeles went 5-1, and in the five wins, starters Kenta Maeda, Alex Wood, Darvish, Rich Hill and Hyun-Jin Ryu allowed four runs in 32 innings.

It was a dominant stretch that didn't even include Kershaw, who is set to rejoin the team Monday night in Phoenix.

The depth of this staff has allowed the Dodgers to withstand injuries, not just to Kershaw and Urias, but also to Maeda (hamstring issue in May) and Ryu (bruised foot in July). And Hill and Brandon McCarthy have had blister concerns.

Kershaw, Wood, Maeda, Ryu, McCarthy and Hill have all thrown at least 83 innings, but only Kershaw has pitched more than 110. What matters is that those six pitchers have been effective - and that their injuries haven't overlapped enough to cause any major problems.

With Darvish now in the mix, the Dodgers will have some interesting decisions to make down the stretch. If everyone is healthy, the postseason rotation would almost certainly include Kershaw, Darvish and Wood, who is 13-1 with a 2.33 ERA. Hill's strikeout numbers make him an enticing option as well, but Ryu and Maeda may not be done making their cases yet.

Here are a few other developments from around baseball:

                    QUOTABLE

Dave Dombrowski has rarely been one to make headlines with his public comments, but Boston's president of baseball operations added some juice to the rivalry with the Yankees after New York general manager Brian Cashman acquired Sonny Gray from Oakland at the deadline.

''I think that Brian has made them the Golden State Warriors and we're the significant underdogs,'' Dombrowski said. ''Like he said earlier in the year, that he didn't know how the Red Sox would lose a game, I think it'll be the same: I don't know how they'll lose a game right now.''

Dombrowski was alluding to a preseason comment by Cashman, who compared the Red Sox to the Warriors after Boston acquired ace pitcher Chris Sale.

For what it's worth, it's Dombrowski's Red Sox who have now won six in a row to take a three-game lead over New York atop the AL East.

                    HIGHLIGHT

The Detroit Tigers had an amusing moment in Friday night's win over Baltimore when they collectively seemed to forget how many outs there were . Justin Verlander struck out Jonathan Schoop for the third out of the bottom of the third inning, but the Tigers began throwing the ball around the horn and remained on the field before realizing the inning was over.

                    LINE OF THE WEEK

Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks, hit three home runs, including a tiebreaking shot in the ninth inning of Arizona's 10-8 win over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

                      • MLB roundup: Williams, Pirates one-hit Tigers
                        August 8, 2017

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Mike Trout had two hits on his 26th birthday to give him 1,001 for his career, but his Los Angeles Angels lost 6-2 to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.

Trout reached 1,000 hits with a double in the fourth inning off Baltimore starter Dylan Bundy. He joined Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle, Jimmie Foxx and Mel Ott as the fourth player to get at least 1,000 hits, 500 runs and 500 walks before his age 26-season. Baseball defines a player's age based on how old he is on July 1.

Trout also homered for the fourth time on his birthday in the sixth inning, but Manny Machado hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning.

Bundy (11-8) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts.

                        Pirates 3, Tigers 0

PITTSBURGH -- Trevor Williams pitched one-hit ball over seven scoreless innings, and John Jaso smacked a pinch-hit, two-run homer as the Pittsburgh beat Detroit.

George Kontos, in his Pittsburgh debut after being picked up off waivers Saturday, and Juan Nicasio each pitched a perfect inning in relief to complete the shutout. Nicasio earned his second save. The Tigers' only hit was a leadoff single by James McCann in the third.

Williams (5-4) walked two, struck out five and threw a career-high 107 pitches. Francisco Cervelli hit an RBI double in the second inning, and Jaso, batting for Williams, homered in the seventh.

                        Cubs 5, Giants 3

SAN FRANCISCO -- Javier Baez hit an inside-the-park home run in the second inning, and Chicago beat San Francisco.

Baez hit a ball off the right-center-field fence that bounced back toward right field after being badly misplayed by Carlos Moncrief.

Jake Arrieta (11-8) allowed three runs (two earned) and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings as Chicago won for the 16th time in 23 games since the All-Star break.

Rookie Ryder Jones hit a two-run homer for San Francisco.

                        Cardinals 11, Royals 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Matt Carpenter, Kolten Wong and Paul DeJong homered as St. Louis blasted Kansas City.

Carpenter hit a three-run homer in a six-run fourth inning. Wong and DeJong hit two-run shots in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez (8-9) gave up two runs on six hits over eight innings.

Mike Moustakas, Eric Hosmer and Brandon Moss hit solo homers for the Royals.

                        Reds 11, Padres 3

CINCINNATI -- Patrick Kivlehan hit a grand slam, and Joey Votto, Adam Duvall, and Zack Cozart added two-run shots, lifting Cincinnati to victory in the opener of a three-game series.

Jose Pirela homered twice for the Padres.

Padres starter Jhoulys Chacin (11-8) allowed five earned runs and yielded more than three earned runs for the first time since May 23.

                        Nationals 3, Marlins 2

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Pinch hitter Adam Lind hit a tiebreaking RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning as Washington beat Miami.

Max Scherzer, who left his previous start with a sore neck in the top of the second, allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings but did not get a decision.

Miami's Giancarlo Stanton hit is major-league-leading 37th homer of the year. Marlins starter Chris O'Grady exited his sixth major league start in the second inning with a right oblique strain.

                        Twins 5, Brewers 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jorge Polanco had four hits, and Eddie Rosario scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning on a balk as Minnesota edged Milwaukee.

The Twins recovered from a 3-0 deficit a night after coming back from down five runs in a 6-5 win against the Texas Rangers.

Buddy Boshers (1-0) retired the only batter he faced for the win. Matt Belisle recorded his second consecutive save, and second of the season, as the Twins' new closer.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                          13) Think about how smart/fortunate the Green Bay Packers have been; since 1992, their starting QB’s have been Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Thats it. Two Hall of Famers.

By way of contrast, my favorite team, the Rams, have had 10 different #1 QB’s since ‘92, and Jared Goff will be #11 this season.

                          12) Chargers’ QB Philip Rivers has 8 kids, and therefore is being allowed to commute 71 miles from his home to training camp every day. Very odd situation— chances are Rivers will be retired by the time the Rams/Chargers move into the new Hollywood Park stadium in 2020.

Since 2002, Drew Brees/Philip Rivers have been the Chargers’ #1 QB’s; not bad. In the five years before that, 1997-2001, the Chargers had five different #1 QB’s: Stan Humphries, Craig Whelihan, Jim Harbaugh, Ryan Leaf and Doug Flutie. Continuity is very important.

                          11) This from the Football Outsiders Almanac, which I just bought online:

“Last year’s Oakland Raiders had the lowest scoring differential (plus-31) of any 12-4 team in NFL history. The other seven teams that went 12-4 with a scoring differential of plus-70 or lower averaged a 9-7 record the next year.”

                          10) I’m not a big fan of fantasy football, but a ton of people are, and one of the questions those people need to answer this season is what impact Adrian Peterson will have in New Orleans. Saints open the season in Minnesota, against Peterson’s old team, the Vikings.

                          9) The daughter of Saints’ coach Sean Payton goes to college at Pepperdine; she is a PR intern at the Cowboys’ training camp in Oxnard, CA this summer.

                          8) Cam Newton isn’t practicing with the Panthers just yet; his shoulder’s health is going to determine a lot of how well Carolina does this season.

                          7) John Elway’s new contract nets him $6M a year to run the Denver Broncos, who’ve won more games than any team in the NFL during Elway’s tenure as GM, except New England.

                          6) Tennessee Titans wanted QB Marcus Mariota to gain weight to play this season, but he came to camp lighter, at 215. We’ll see how that works out for him.

                          5) QB Brock Osweiler will start the Browns’ preseason opener this week.

                          4) Bob Stoops retired as Oklahoma’s footballl coach back in June, at age 56, young for a coach to retire. Seems odd until you read that Stoops’ dad was a really good high school coach who died during a game when he was only 54. Then it makes a lot more sense.

                          3) Chargers have a new head coach in Anthony Lynn, but he has experienced coordinators, in ex-head coaches Ken Whisenhunt, Gus Bradley. That makes good sense.

                          2) This is a fun week ahead of us: NFL exhibitions resume Wednesday, and the last major of the golf season is this week, as well as the last week of the regular season for my fantasy baseball league. Rams play Dallas Saturday night— looking forward to seeing the Rams’ new offense.

                          1) My 12-day vacation to Las Vegas/Canton, OH was great fun; seems like six weeks ago I watched LaVar Ball’s AAU team play in Vegas, but it was only 13 days ago. Any night spent watching baseball in the Westgate SuperBook is also tremendous.

That said, it is good to be home.

                            • LEADING OFF: Dodgers, Red Sox roll, Keuchel tries to rebound
                              August 8, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Tuesday:

                              DAZZLING DODGERS

Kenta Maeda and the Los Angeles Dodgers try to keep up their amazing run when they open a series at Arizona. Los Angeles has won four straight, 13 of 14 and is 24-3 since July 4, and lead the majors with a 79-32 record. They are just the fourth big league team to win 43 or more over a 50-game stretch - the first since the 1912 New York Giants, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The others were the 1906 Chicago Cubs and 1884 St. Louis Maroons of the Union Association.

                              BOUNCE BACK?

Astros ace Dallas Keuchel was 9-0 with a 1.67 ERA in 11 starts when he was put on the disabled list in early April because of a neck problem. Since coming off the DL, the lefty hasn't looked like his old self, going 0-1 in two starts while giving up six runs on 13 hits and five walks in eight innings. Keuchel aims to regain his forms when he pitches on the road vs. the Chicago White Sox.

                              RED SOX ROLL

Chris Sale (13-4, 2.70 ERA) tops the majors with 216 strikeouts as AL East-leading Boston goes into a two-game series at Tampa Bay. Sale is coming off a rough outing in which he gave up seven runs in five innings against Cleveland.

                              STREAKING VOTTO

Joey Votto tries to extend his three-game homer streak and his longest hitting streak of the season. He's hit safely in 12 straight games and has homered in three straight - he's never connected in four in a row. The Cincinnati star has 30 home runs this season going into the matchup against Luis Perdomo and the visiting Padres.
