Clayton Kershaw injury forces sportsbooks to drop National League Cy Young odds

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw was the odds on favorite to win the National League Cy Young award before injuring his back over the weekend.

Sportsbooks are taking down their National League Cy Young odds in reaction to news that Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw is expected to be out four to six weeks according to Fox Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal.

Kershaw left his start on Sunday after just two innings of work because of pain in his lower back. He missed significant time last season because of a herniated disk in his back. The Dodgers have placed Kershaw on the 10-day disabled list but are not giving a specific time table for his return.

Kershaw, a three-time Cy Young winner, was the odds-on favorite to grab the award again this season before this setback. BetOnline.com listed Kershaw at -150 last week, while the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas opened with the lefty as the preseason favorite at +160 and had him at -350 last weekend.

Kershaw is first in the National League in wins (15), ERA (2.04) and innings pitched (171), and he’s also second in WHIP (0.88), strikeouts (168) and WAR (4.5).

Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer will take over pole position once the odds reopen and he’ll be heavy chalk too. This always was a two-man race between Kershaw and Scherzer for the award.

Scherzer, who already has two Cy Young awards in his trophy cabinet, was +110 at many offshore books last week and he opened the year at +500 at the SuperBook.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, remain big favorites to win their division (-15,000), the National League (+150) and the World Series (+350).

Hottest team: Indians (4-0 past four overall)

The Indians have rolled up four straight victories at home, as they try to keep the red-hot Royals are arm's length. Cleveland is finally one game over .500 at Progressive Field thanks to the hot streak, outscoring opponents 29-7 during the first four games of the homestand. Now the Indians turn their attention to the visiting Angels after Monday's make-up game with the Reds. The Indians are 18-7 over their past 25 games against American League West opponents, and 6-1 in their past seven at home against right-handed starters. For what it's worth, however, they're a dismal 0-6 in their past six played on a Tuesday, and 0-4 in Mike Clevinger's past four starts in Game 1 of a series.

Coldest team: Reds (2-9 past 11 games)

The Reds had a make-up game in Cleveland on Monday, and they suffered a 6-2 setback. They had won a surprising three of their past four games on the road before being tripped up. Now, they'll have the unenviable task of traveling to the Bronx to try and cool off rookie Aaron Judge. Cincinnati is a dismal 1-7 over their past eight games against a team with a winning record, 1-6 in their past seven interleague road outings against a left-handed starter and 0-6 over their past six series openers. The Reds do catch a break with Jordan Montgomery on the bump, as the Yankes are 0-4 over his past four outings.

Hottest pitcher: Jose Berrios, Twins (9-3, 3.50 ERA)

The Twins turn to Berrios, who is looking to become a 10-game winner. After a dismal start in Houston on July 14, he bounced back nicely to turn back the Yankees last Wednesday. He allowed just one earned run, six hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings in the win to lower his ERA back down to 3.50. Minnesota has won 10 of his past 14 starts, although they're just 4-10 across his past 14 against teams with a winning record. They're also 2-5 over his past seven on the road against teams with a winning overall mark. And while Minnesota has been a huge surprise on the road this season, going 26-18, they're just 4-24 over their past 28 interleague road games against a team with a winning overall mark.

Coldest pitcher: Madison Bumgarner, Giants (0-4, 3.57 ERA)

Bumgarner takes the hill for just second time since returning from his two-month long injury, and he is still searching for his first victory of the season after coming up short in his first six outings. The good news is MadBum has lasted at least six innings in each of his six starts this season, posting a quality start in all but five of his outings. The Giants have dropped four of their past five at home, and they're an uncharacteristic 0-6 over their past six starts. It's hard to believe, but the Pirates are 7-0 over their past seven trips to San Francisco, too, so MadBum has his work cut out for him if he wants to find the win column for the first time in 2017.

Biggest UNDER run: Twins (6-3 past nine overall)

It's been the 'over' hitting across the past three for Minnesota, as they are averaging 5.3 runs per game while allowing 6.7 over the span. However, the 'under' cashed in the previous six outings, and the 'under' is an impressive 8-1-1 over Berrios' past 10 starts against a team with a winning overall record. The under is also 5-2 over his past seven starts, and7-3 in Minnesota's past 10 interleague outings. The under has also hit in five of their past six against a right-handed starting pitcher while going 6-1 in their past seven interleague games vs. RHP.

Biggest OVER run: Giants (9-2-2 past 13 overall)

Total bettors have been making a killing off of the Giants lately, as the 'over' is 9-2-2 over their past 13 outings. The over is also 4-1-1 across their past six at home, and 4-1-1 in the past six against a right-handed starter. However, the under is 3-1-1 in MadBum's past five starts overall and 5-2-1 across his past eight home outings. The Pirates were a good over bet earlier in the season, but lately it's the under coming through. The under is 6-0-1 in Jameson Taillon's past seven starts, and 27-9-2 over their past 38 overall, so Pittsburgh's solid pitching lately will make it tough for San Francisco to continue its 'over' run.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Red Sox

Two ice-cold teams continue their series at Safeco Field on Tuesday. The Mariners posted a 4-0 win against the Red Sox in the series opener, as Boston is now just 1-4 over their past five and 1-5 over the past six road outings. Drew Pomeranz could be the guy to turn things around, however, as the Red Sox are 5-1 over his past six road assignments and 5-0 in the past five starts by the left-hander. Still, Boston is just 1-4 over their past five against the NL West and showing no signs of snapping out of it. Seattle is 2-5 over Felix Hernandez's past seven starts against a team with a winning record, and they're just 4-12 over the past 16 home games, so something's gotta give.

      Betcha didn’t know:
The Diamondbacks rolled up 10 runs in Monday's series opener against the Braves, and they're the only team in the majors yet to lose a game when posting at least six runs, going 26-0 in such situations. We'll see how many runs they can score off of Mike Foltynewicz, as he has been hot lately. The Braves are a perfect 8-0 over Folty's past eight outings, and 4-0 in his past four on the road. However, they are 0-4 in his past four assignments on a Tuesday. Atlanta apparently misses their days in the National League West, as they're 17-8 over their past 25 against their former division. Arizona is 5-11 over their past 16 overall, but 5-2 in Taijuan Walker's past seven times out.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-210) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Mets (+110) at Padres

Biggest line move: Blue Jays (+120 to -105) vs. Athletics

        Tuesday MLB Betting Preview
        Pittsburgh vs. San Francisco

The Pittsburgh Pirates took the opener of this series 10-3 last night as they continue to do everything they can to climb back into the NL Central race.

The Pirates were left for dead back in early June as questions of them having tough decisions to make on some of there more valuable assets (McCutchen etc) started to make headlines.

However, since the 4th of July, Pittsburgh is 13-4 SU – including 10-3 SU last 13 – to get back to the .500 mark and sit just 2.5 games behind Milwaukee for 1st place.

There is still the ultra-talented Chicago Cubs between the Pirates and Brewers, but Pittsburgh looks like a team doing everything they can to make a playoff push and will likely actually be buyers now at the trade deadline.

The opposite can be said for the Giants who are in the midst of an very disappointing 2017 campaign at 38-63 SU. They've been hit by the injury bug rather hard over the course of the year, but they have also been playing like crap for the majority of the season and are now threatening Philadelphia for the worst record in MLB.

There is no doubt that San Fran will trade off a few of their bigger names in the coming weeks, but for now it's all about playing spoiler for this squad. Can they even up this series with the red-hot Pirates tonight?

This line has already seen significant movement this morning as the majority of bettors prefer to back the hotter team in a spot like this. The Pirates fit that billing, and after opening up in the +115 to +120 range, the majority of support coming their way has forced the move to the current number. With San Francisco having the 2nd worst record in MLB, bettors should see the Giants getting faded a lot the rest of the way, but tonight's game may not be one of those times to follow the masses and go that route.

VegasInsider.com's betting percentage numbers show nearly 80% of the ML wagers coming in on Pittsburgh right now, putting them in that dreaded “public underdog” role. Publicly backed underdogs are teams I almost always prefer to fade for a variety of reasons and this game definitely fits that mold.

Yes, Pittsburgh is the hotter team right now and looked rather impressive in their 10-3 victory last night, but the Giants have plenty of professional pride in that locker room full of World Series champions and I wouldn't be quick to go against them in a spot like this – especially with Madison Bumgarner on the mound.

Bumgarner has been hurt for most of the year and has looked a little rusty in his two starts (both vs. San Diego) since returning from the DL. Oddly enough, Bumgarner has yet to pick up a win this year (0-4 SU record), and the Giants are 0-6 SU in all six of his starts. It was giving up the HR ball that hurt him in both recent starts vs. San Diego (allowed two HR's in each game) but he was still able to go 6+ innings in both.

More importantly though, when was the last time you saw a Madison Bumgarner start priced at -115? On pure value alone that price is a steal, no matter what the other numbers say. Yes, the Giants have yet to win with him on the hill this year, but that won't last forever, and with this being his third start back from injury, rust isn't going to be an issue.

Bumgarner was a -205 favorite in his last outing (also at home) vs. San Diego and I'm sure many of the bettors backing Pittsburgh tonight are the same ones who got burned on Bumgarner in that game last week. To go from a -200 favorite to a -115 favorite in the span of five days is absurd given it's still the same ballpark Bumgarner is comfortable in and he's facing a slightly better team that's playing great at the moment.

As long as Bumgarner can eliminate those HR's (or at worst keep them to solo shots), the Giants have a much better shot then the 53.49% implied probability of winning this game that the -115 line suggests.

Throw in the public underdog fade theory on Pittsburgh, and I don't know how you can't back the Giants at this price in this spot tonight.

Best Bet: San Francisco ML (-115)

        • Rangers GM making trade calls
          July 25, 2017

Yu Darvish's days with the Texas Rangers may very well be numbered.

On Monday, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels began making phone calls to alert teams that he is willing to trade the four-time All-Star and former American League strikeout leader for the "right deal," ESPN reports.

If Daniels is unable to find a deal he likes, he will hold onto Darvish and the Rangers will continue to pursue an AL wild-card spot, per ESPN.

Darvish, 30, is 6-8 with a 3.44 ERA and 143 strikeouts -- fourth in the AL -- through 21 starts this year. He is scheduled to start Wednesday against the Miami Marlins, his final outing before Monday's 4 p.m. ET trade deadline.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs are among the major league clubs who have sent scouts to watch Darvish's recent outings, according to ESPN.

Darvish is eligible to become a free agent this November.

Texas (48-51) is fourth in the AL West standings, 18 games behind the division-leading Astros. However, the Rangers are just 3 1/2 games back of the Kansas City Royals for the league's second wild-card spot.

              ***************************

Wednesday’s Den: Random Lists of 3:

              13) If I were 17 again, three colleges I’d consider attending:
Cal-Santa Barbara, Pepperdine, Cal-Irvine…….I would’ve flunked out of UNLV as quickly as it could possibly have happened. Hell, I had a hard time getting thru UAlbany.

              12) Favorite TV analysts, any sport: a) Jeff Van Gundy, NBA b) Ron Darling, MLB c) Troy Aikman NFL

              11) Underrated events a sports fan should attend:
              a) NBA Summer League— For $30, can watch pro basketball all day, and when you’re done, you are in Las Vegas.
              b) Any pro golf tournament— Interesting how quiet thousands of people can be. A guy finishes his 18 holes, and is back on the driving range fairy quickly- they practice A LOT.
              c) Minor league baseball— For $10 or $12, can watch future major leaguers in action.

              10) Favorite kinds of soda: a) Dr Brown’s cream soda b) Cherry Coke c) Sierra Mist

              9) If I had a son who was a bigtime basketball recruit, I’d want him to play for one of these three coaches: a) Bob Huggins b) Roy Williams c) James Jones (Yale)

              8) Three stadiums/arenas I’d like to visit someday:
              a) Tiger Stadium, LSU football b) Oakland Coliseum (baseball) c) Hinkle Fieldhouse (college hoop)

              7) Three stadiums/arenas I loved watching a game in:
              a) Thomas & Mack Arena (UNLV) b) Edward Jones Dome (St Louis Rams) c) Minute Maid Park (Astros baseball)

              6) Three other random observations about sports:
              a) Going to a NASCAR race would be too loud for me.
              b) I’d like to see some Japanese pro baseball on TV during the All-Star break. Don’t need any announcers, just good graphics. MLB Network should do this.
              c) I think I’d be a good radio talkshow host, and I bet most of you think you could be, too. I’m envious seeing some of these people make $5-6M a year to talk about sports.

              5) Annoying people: a) Both Donald Trumps b) LaVar Ball c) Jeffrey Loria (Marlins owner)

              4) My team has the ball on its own 20-yard line, 2:00 to go, we’re down 3. QB’s I would want running my team: a) John Elway b) Kurt Warner c) Ben Roethlisberger

              3) Bases loaded, two outs, game tied, bottom of 9th; I’d want these hitters up:
              a) Jose Altuve b) Paul Goldschmidt c) Josh Donaldson

              2) Things that bother me, whether they should or shouldn’t:
              a) When Lebron James has the ball late in the game, and he gets criticized for passing the ball to an open teammate- thats what he is supposed to do.
              b) LSU firing Les Miles as football coach, because he didn’t win as much as Nick Saban has won at Alabama. Miles won more at LSU than Saban did.
              c) Astros not being on national TV enough; they’re great fun to watch. If MLB wants big ratings for the playoffs, they need to promote Houston/Washington more.

              1) Three other fun things I’ve gotten a chance to do………
              a) Got to sit in on a UNLV basketball practice couple years ago. I was a student manager in college, was very interesting to see how a D-1 practice is run.
              b) Watch first weekend of NCAA tournament in a Las Vegas sports book. Good stuff.
              c) Once shot free throws for beer during a timeout at an Albany Patroons CBA game; for every FT I made in 0:24, I got a case of beer. Made 4 out of 7, but I don’t like beer. Tried to trade it for four cases of Coca-Cola; wasn’t happening.

              • Giants trade infielder Eduardo Nunez to Red Sox
                July 26, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Infielder Eduardo Nunez was traded from the San Francisco Giants to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night for minor league right-handers Shaun Anderson and Gregory Santos.

The deal was finalized during San Francisco's 11-3 win over Pittsburgh and announced after the game.

Nunez started at third base, hit a two-run double and scored twice before he was removed for a pinch hitter in the fifth inning. The infielder, who was hit by a pitch on the left elbow earlier in the game, was shown on television shaking hands with teammates in the Giants clubhouse.

The 30-year-old hit .308 in 76 games with San Francisco this season and has reached base safely in 40 of his last 42 games. Nunez drove in 31 runs and had a team-high 17 stolen bases despite being slowed by a hamstring injury this month.

The move could clear the way for the Giants to recall Pablo Sandoval from the minors. The 2012 World Series MVP with the Giants, Sandoval signed a minor league contract with San Francisco last weekend after he was released by Boston, which signed him to a $95 million, five-year deal after the 2014 season.

He hit just .237 with 14 homers and 59 RBIs during 2+ injury-decimated seasons with the Red Sox. Sandoval has played for Class A San Jose and Triple-A Sacramento since rejoining the Giants organization.

Giants pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Johnny Cueto are could be dealt before Monday's trade deadline.

                        • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
                          July 26, 2017

Hottest team: Royals (7-0 past seven overall)

The Royals have ripped off seven consecutive victories, but unfortunately for them they cannot make up any ground on the first-place Indians. Cleveland won its fifth consecutive game in dramatic fashion with a walk-off grand slam from Edwin Encarnacion on Tuesday. Still, the Royals continue to get good pitching and timely hitting in low-scoring games lately. The Royals are 7-0 over their past seven against AL Central teams, 7-0 over their past seven against teams with a losing record and 19-7 over their past 26 games vs. right-handed starting pitching. Kansas City has also been successful on 13 of their past 19 road outing while winning seven of Ian Kennedy's past eight outings overall.

Coldest team: White Sox (1-10 past 11 games, 8-22 past 30 overall)

On the flip side of things in the AL Central, the White Sox continue to scuffle. They have won just once over the past 11 outings, and they have traded off key pieces to contenders for prospects. As such, they continue to be in full rebuild mode. Bettors have been having a lot of luck fading the Pale Hose lately, as they have won just once over the past 11 overall, they have dropped five in a row at home and they're 2-8 over their past 10 interleague outings. In addition, they're just 1-8 over their past nine following a loss, 1-5 across James Shields' past six outings and 5-11 in their past 16 at home against teams with an overall winning mark.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Sale, Red Sox (12-4, 2.48 ERA)

Sale checks into Wednesday's series finale at Safeco Field with the third-best ERA in the majors at 2.48. He also is tied for the lead in the American League with 12 victories while sitting as the only pitcher in the majors with 200 strikeouts and it's not even August. The Red Sox have won 11 of Sale's past 15 outings, including five of his past seven on the road. He should be the key to snapping their four-game losing skid, and the public seems to think so by backing the Red Sox hard on Wednesday. The Red Sox are also 8-2 over Sale's past 10 when working on four days of rest.

Coldest pitcher: Ricky Nolasco, Angels (4-11, 5.13 ERA)

Nolasco takes the mound at Progressive Field in Cleveland trying to cool off the Indians. They're on a five-game winning streak, and they'll be licking their chops to face the league leader in homers allowed (26). He hasn't faced the Tribe this season, but he has an extensive history against them from his days as a member of the Minnesota Twins. He is 0-2 with a 5.54 ERA over his past six starts and one relief appearance against Cleveland since the start of the 2014 season, and the Indians have clobbered nine homers against him across 39 innings during the span, tied with the White Sox for most of any team in the majors.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (27-10-2 past 39 overall)

The 'under' has been a regular occurrence for the Bucs lately, going 27-10-2 over their past 39 games overall. The under is also an impressive 21-6-1 across their past 28 games against a right-handed starter, 6-2-1 in their past nine on the road vs. RHP and 12-2 in their past 14 outings following a loss. In addition, the under is 5-1 in the past six outings by Trevor Williams while going 4-1 over his past five when working on four days of rest. However, the over is 6-0-3 in the past nine meetings in San Francisco, while going 5-2-1 in the past eight meetings overall between these two clubs.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (6-1 past seven overall)

The 'over' continues to hit for the Braves on their west coast road swing. The total has gone over in six of their past seven overall, and five of six on their road trip, including each of the first two games in Arizona. Tuesday's game barely inched over the total (10.5), as Atlanta won 8-3 behind Mike Foltynewicz. Atlanta is averaging 5.8 runs per game over the past six outings while allowing 5.4 runs per game over the past seven outings. The Braves turn to Aaron Blair to start Wednesday, and that usually means plenty of runs. The over is 4-1 over his past five starts, and 3-1-1 in his past five on the road against teams with a winning overall mark. The over is also 8-1 in Atlanta's past nine on the road overall.

Matchup to watch: White Sox vs. Cubs

The Battle of Chicago has been fairly close over the years. However, there is a wide gulf between these two sides right now, as the Cubs are coming off a world championship and challenging for another, while the White Sox have the third-worst winning percentage in baseball, and they're dead last in the American League. The Cubs have won seven straight on the road, and nine of their past 11 overall. The White Sox have lost 22 of their past 30, and five straight at home. However, the two sides split a pair on the north side earlier this week, with the Cubs winning 7-2 on Tuesday and the White Sox winning 3-1 on Monday.

                          Betcha didn’t know:
There have been 127 home runs hit at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia this season, or 2.76 per game. Houston Astros RHP Mike Fiers has served up 21 home runs across 107 2/3 innings over 19 starts, so it's likely we'll see quite a few homers in Wednesday's series finale. Aaron Nola has been a little better for the Phillies, serving up just five homers across 47 1/3 innings at home, and one home every 9.33 innings overall on the season. He is also 4-3 with a 3.23 ERA and .220 opponent batting average over seven starts at 'The Vault'.

Biggest public favorite: Yankees (-240) vs. Reds

Biggest public underdog: Twins (+230) at Dodgers

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-205 to -230) vs. Twins

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: A night of basketball in Las Vegas…….

                                13) I was at the AAU game in Las Vegas last night, pitting the SC Supreme against the Big Ballers in a pool play game. The place was ridiculously crowded, so crowded that the game was almost cancelled due to concerns about crowding from the fire marshal.

First of all, this is a very organized, well-run event; seven games going on at all times under one roof in the Cashman Center, with bleachers and a good concession stand, but a lot more people than usual showed up to watch last night.

They put out boxscores for these games, which is great. Lot of work goes into doing a good job of running a tournament like this.

                                12) Most people I listened to before the game thought SC Supreme, featuring top recruit Zion Williamson, would dispose of LaVar Ball’s team easily, but the Ballers played their hearts out and didn’t get blown out, losing 104-92 in a raggedy game.

                                11) “Unreal. Never seen anything like it,” Kansas coach Bill Self, who was at the game, told ESPN.

                                10) Supposedly, Lebron James came to the Cashman Center for the game, but didn’t come in when he was told about the crowd concerns. Four or five other NBA players were at the game.

                                9) OK, so you know I love boxscores; here are some stats from this game:

                                — SC Supreme was 0-2 on the arc in this game; Ballers were 15-46. Wow
                                — LaMelo Ball scored 36 points; was 7-15 inside the arc, 3-12 outside the arc, 13-16 on the line. He is a good passer, but is more of a shoot-first guy than his older brother Lonzo, who was also at this game.
                                — Zion Williamson, one of the best high school players in the country, scored 31 points in 31:00, but was only 7-20 on the foul line- his teammates were 25-34.
                                — SC Supreme shot 57.1% from the floor, were 32-54 on the foul line.
                                — Ballers’ five subs who played took a total of two shots in 34:00 played.

                                8) LaVar Ball has become semi-famous for his promotional skills; he seems to crave attention, but during the game, he was quiet, sitting with this ankles crossed watching the game. He did get a technical foul in the second half.

As for the Ballers’ defense, I’ll say this: they rebounded and went after loose balls with great abandon— they trapped the ball a lot but other than that, SC Supreme got a lot of layups.

                                7) Underrated weird event of the evening: Guy who was coaching the SC Supreme team was roaming the sidelines while holding his young son (looked about 2 years old) with his left arm the entire first half. Kid looked like he was asleep with his head on his dad’s left shoulder.

                                6) I saw four games Wednesday; best of the four was Compton Magic beating Iowa Barnstormers 73-62; Compton shot 69% from the floor in the second half, pulling away late after blowing a double-digit lead earlier in the game.

                                5) So these end-of-summer national AAU events are fun to watch; talented kids from all over the country playing each other and trying to earn college scholarships. Good stuff.

                                Elsewhere in the world……..
                                4) Michael Vick wants to become a football coach, is an intern for the KC Chiefs this summer. Plaxico Burress is a coaching intern with the Arizona Cardinals.

                                3) If you’ve seen the TV show Billions on Showtime, the guy who plays pizzeria owner Bruno was a decorated police officer in real life, a “gold-star” officer, so that is pretty cool.

                                2) The A’s have to demote closer Santiago Casilla; he is awful. Oakland led 2-0 in 9th inning last night, Casilla faced three batters, all of whom scored. I’m grateful I wasn’t around a TV to see it.

                                1) Trailblazers saved $60M in salary/luxury tax by trading Allen Crabbe to the Nets.
