Sunday’s six-pack

— Brewers 9, Phillies 8— Milwaukee led this game 8-1 in the 7th inning, blew the lead, but ended their 6-game losing streak.

— Indians 2, Toronto 1 (10)— Tribe’s first late-inning win (7th inning on) since May 23.

— Astros 8, Orioles 4— Colin Moran fouled a ball off his face, left game; Marwin Gonzalez came off the bench and hit a 3-run homer.

— Royals 7, White Sox 2— Chicago is 0-7 since the All-Star break.

— I wonder how much it costs to have an advertisement on the Green Monster at Fenway Park for a year; has to be pretty steep.

— Dodgers traded reliever Sergio Romo to Tampa Bay, which is in the thick of the AL Wild Card race.

Sunday’s Den: Ranking the months of the year………..

12) May— Slow month. Weather is getting better here in upstate New York, but it is still spring and there is a lot of rain (spring showers bring summer flowers, something like that). NHL, NBA playoffs are underway, as is baseball.

11) February— College basketball and very little else, except the Super Bowl, Daytona 500 and cold, cruddy weather. At least it is the shortest month of the year.

10) January— Just like February, except the NFL playoffs and college football title game are also in the mix. Golf starts up, so you can at least see warm people on TV.

When I was working, Martin Luther King Day was great for me; a Monday in January where I could sleep till noon. Nothing better than staying inside in January.

9) April— If you like rain, this is your month here in the Northeast, but after a long winter, rain is OK. Baseball starts, which is good. NHL/NBA playoffs start up. Excellent week to hang out in Las Vegas and sip cool drinks by the pool, before the day’s baseball starts.

8) August— I’m not a big racetrack guy; August around here means thoroughbred racing 25 miles north of here at Saratoga. It is a fun day, but lot of people trying to look rich, and thats not my thing. Exhibiton football is OK up to a point; solid baseball month.

7) June— When I was a young person, this was the best month of the year, because school ended and the weather was tremendous.

6) July— If you like basketball, you can choose which part of the month to go to Las Vegas to see either the NBA Summer League or AAU games later in the month. There are also really good AAU games at Disney in Florida at the end of the month, as summer recruiting goes to an end. I’ve learned a lot of basketball watching game after game in the summer.

5) October— Baseball playoffs, NFL/college football, and lot of college basketball research, with the season starting in early November. As soon as the baseball season ends, it is time to delve back into hardwood mode and get ready for 4.5 months of college basketball.

Side note: Everyone should spend at least one Halloween in Las Vegas; it is…….interesting.

4) September— NFL and college football start, pennant races in baseball, lot of solid action, and it is still summer weather. Since I’m not a kid or a teacher, I could care less that school starts in September. When I was a kid, September was WAY lower on this list.

3) November— Tremendous overlap of college football/basketball begins; busiest time of year for this website. NFL games on Sundays, NBA/NHL are underway. Lot of action.

When I had a job, this was a great month; three days off: Election Day, Veterans Day ad of course, Thanksgiving. Never underestimate a month with three holidays in it.

2) December— The best week to visit Las Vegas is the week before Christmas; room rates are way cheaper, there are ton of games to wager on that week, and if you don’t want to talk to anyone, you don’t have to, since most of the people in Las Vegas that week are foreigners.

1) March— My favorite month of the year. Meaningful college basketball for the first three weeks of the month, winter is ending, and spring training baseball every day on TV, to fill the gaps if basketball is off that day.

Hottest team: Mets (4-0 past four overall, 9-4 past 13 home games)

The Mets have posted four consecutive victories to move within a game and a half of the Braves for second place in the National League East. They still have a ton of work to do if they're to work their way into the postseason conversation, but they're at least playing much better lately. The Mets offense is averaging 5.8 runs per game while yielding just 3.8 runs per outing during the four-game run. New York looks for the interleague sweep in Sunday's game, and the A's have been cooperating. They're 0-8 over their past eight games against National League East clubs while going 0-4 in their past four interleague road games and 2-5 over Daniel Gossett's past seven outings. On the flip side, the Mets are 9-2 over their past 11 interleague outings and 7-2 over the past nine against NL West foes.

Coldest team: Reds (1-8 past nine games, 5-12 past 17 overall)

The Reds looked respectable earlier in the season, but it's been a slow burn down to the bottom of the National League Central lately. They're struggling on their current homestand, losing eight of nine outings while averaging just 2.78 runs per game while yielding a whopping 7.67 runs per contest during the span. That's not going to win you very many games. They look to avert the sweep against the visiting Marlins, a team which has won five in a row on the road and six of their past eight against teams with a losing record. The Reds, on the other hand, have loss seven in a row against teams with a losing overall mark and 10 of the past 11 vs. NL East foes.

Hottest pitcher: Michael Wacha, Caardinals (7-3, 3.71 ERA)

The Cardinals turn to Wacha trying to slay the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Sunday Night Baseball. The Cards have won five straight starts by Wacha, and he has turned in an impressive 1.01 ERA across 26 2/3 innings. St. Louis is also 9-4 over Wacha's past 13 tries against NL Central foes, but they're just 4-9 over his past 13 on the road against teams with a winning overall mark. They're also 1-4 in his past five overall against teams with a losing record. He hasn't had a lot of success at Wrigley Field, either, with the Cards just 1-5 over his past six tries against the Cubs and 1-5 over their past six overall at Wrigley. The 'over' is 5-0 in Wacha's past five in Chicago, and 11-1 over his past 12 against the Cubs.

Coldest pitcher: Rick Porcello, Red Sox (4-12, 4.60 ERA)

Porcello has actually resembled a guy who won the American League Cy Young Award in 2016 rather than the guy who was the first pitcher to double-digit losses this season. He is 0-2 across two starts in July, but his ERA of 2.21 ERA is easily his best of any month this season. He'll look to keep things going in a positive direction under the Southern California sunshine. He is 2-9 with a 5.57 ERA across 14 starts under the lights and 2-3 with a 2.50 ERA over six starts during the daytime. He allowed four runs - three earned - and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings in a win against the Halos in his only appearance this season against them back on June 23 at Fenway Park.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (15-5-1 past 21 overall)

The 'under' has been a popular pick for total bettors during Cincinnati games, going 15-5-1 over the past 21 games overall. The under is also 4-1-1 over the past six against a team with a losing record, 4-0 over the past four at home against a team with a losing record and 9-2-1 in their past 12 overall against a right-handed starter. LOS ANGELES (AP) Clayton Kershaw left after two innings with lower back tightness that is sending him to the disabled list, and the Los Angeles Dodgers overcame a blown save by Kenley Jansen to beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Sunday on Logan Forsythe's bases-loaded single in the 10th.

Kershaw, unbeaten in 15 consecutive starts, came out after 21 pitches. He was headed for scans and declined to compare his current situation with last year, when he was out 2 + months with a herniated disk in his back.

Jansen entered with a 3-1 lead and got the final out of the eighth, then gave up a tying three-run homer to Matt Adams in the ninth.

Forsythe singled after Cody Bellinger was intentionally walked by Jim Johnson (6-2) to load the bases. Brandon Morrow (3-0) retired the side in the 10th.

Austin Barnes hit a three-run homer in the fourth for the Dodgers and Cody Bellinger hit his 27th of the season in the eighth.

NATIONALS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Stephen Strasburg left with a 5-0 lead after the second inning, when he walked the No. 8 and No. 9 batters. He is 10-3 with a 3.25 ERA.

Strasburg said his early departure was a precaution. He described the problem as slight ''achiness'' in his forearm. Strasburg said he wants to ''nip it in the bud'' so he's available to the team in the crucial stages of the late season.

Brian Goodwin's leadoff homer ignited a four-run first inning off Robbie Ray (9-5), who lasted five innings, allowing five runs.

Bryce Harper singled in the first to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. Joe Blanton (1-2) got two outs and earned the win.

CUBS 5, CARDINALS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Willson Contreras hit a tiebreaking two-run homer, Jose Quintana won again and Chicago beat St. Louis to move into a virtual tie for first in the NL Central.

Kyle Schwarber also connected as the Cubs won for the eighth time in nine games since the All-Star break. The World Series champions improved to 51-46, just a few percentage points ahead of Milwaukee after the Brewers (53-48) lost 6-3 at Philadelphia.

Quintana (6-8) struck out seven in six innings in his first home start since he was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the White Sox on July 13. He pitched seven sparkling innings in an 8-0 victory at Baltimore in his Cubs debut last Sunday.

Coming off his first career shutout, Michael Wacha (7-4) was charged with five runs and six hits in six innings in his first loss since May 30.

Wade Davis finished for his 20th save in 20 chances.

YANKEES 6, MARINERS 4

SEATTLE (AP) - New York won a series for the first time in six weeks when Aroldis Chapman struck out Ben Gamel with a runner on to preserve the Yankees' third win in four games against Seattle this weekend. The Yankees had been 0-8-2 in series since sweeping Baltimore on June 9-11.

After Seattle overcame a 3-0 deficit with a four-run fourth inning against Caleb Smith, Brett Gardner hit a tying, bases-loaded single in the sixth and Clint Frazier followed with a two-run double off former Yankee James Pazos (2-3).

Didi Gregorius had his first career multihomer game with solo shots, and Gardner opened the game with his 17th home run.

A converted starter pitching on consecutive days for the first time in big league career, Chad Green (1-0) struck out three in 2 1/3 perfect innings. Chapman had another shaky finish for his 11th save.

RANGERS 6, RAYS 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Rougned Odor homered twice, including back-to-back drives with Carlos Gomez in the eighth inning, and Texas completed a three-game sweep.

Odor's two-run drive off Brad Boxberger (2-2) tied the score, and Gomez put the Rangers ahead 6-5 two pitches later.

Joey Gallo also homered for the Rangers, who had not swept a series of three or more games at Tampa Bay since July 1999. Adrian Beltre tripled and singled, moving within 11 of 3,000 hits.

Matt Bush (3-4) pitched a scoreless seventh, and Jose Leclerc got his second save despite two walks in the ninth.

INDIANS 8, BLUE JAYS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Corey Kluber (8-3) struck out a season-high 14 in 7 2/3 innings, and Cleveland finished a three-game sweep. Kluber allowed five hits, including Kevin Pillar's home run, and reached double figures in strikeouts for the ninth time in 16 starts.

Michael Brantley hit a two-run homer in the sixth and had three RBIs. Brandon Guyer's three-run double was the key hit in the first, when Cleveland took a 4-0 lead against J.A. Happ (3-7).

ATHLETICS 3, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Matt Chapman quickly atoned got getting picked off at third base by hitting a tiebreaking home run in the seventh Rafael Montero (1-7).

Rookie Daniel Gossett (2-5) gave up two runs and five hits in six innings, and Santiago Casilla worked the ninth for his 16th save, ending New York's four-game winning streak.

REDS 6, MARLINS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Scooter Gennett, Eugenio Suarez and Tucker Barnhart homered, and Billy Hamilton had three hits and stole a pair of bases to increase his major league-leading total to 43.

Cincinnati finished a 2-8 homestand in which they allowed 23 homers and 72 runs. Rookie right-hander Sal Romano (2-2) made his fourth and longest big league start, allowing one run and three hits over six innings.

Raisel Iglesias gave up one hits over two innings for his first save since July 9, his 17th this year.

Tom Koehler (1-5) gave up six runs - five earned - and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

ORIOLES 9, ASTROS 7

BALTIMORE (AP) - Zach Britton pitched a hitless ninth tp set an American League record by converting his 55th consecutive save opportunity.

Britton broke the AL mark held by Tom Gordon, who notched 54 straight saves with Boston from 1998-99. Britton started his run on Oct. 1, 2015, added 47 in a row last season and is 6 for 6 this year. The major league record of 84 is held by Eric Gagne of the Dodgers from 2002-04.

Baltimore broke a tie with two runs in the eighth against Luke Gregerson (2-3), using a sacrifice fly by Manny Machado and an RBI single by Jonathan Schoop.

Britton made the lead stand up, using 16 pitches to retire the AL West leaders. Mychal Givens (7-0) worked the eighth for the Orioles.

PHILLIES 6, BREWERS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Nick Williams hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fourth off Junior Guerra (1-4).

Jerad Eickhoff (2-7) allowed three hits in six innings and Howie Kendrick had two hits and two RBIs. Luis Garcia pitched a perfect ninth for his first save this season. The Phillies have won consecutive series for the first time since late April.

TIGERS 9, TWINS 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Iglesias had three hits, including a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the seventh off Trevor Hildenberger (1-1) in a 4-hour, 19-minute game - the longest nine-inning game in Twins history.

Ian Kinsler, James McCann and Alex Presley also had three hits apiece for the Tigers, who took two of three from the Twins.

Matthew Boyd (4-5) won his second straight start since he was recalled from the minors, striking out a career-high eight in six-plus innings.

DENVER (AP) - Kyle Freeland (10-7) allowed two runs over six inning in his first start since his no-hit bid against the Chicago White Sox on July 9 was broken up by Melky Cabrera's one-out single in the ninth. between the starts, Freeland threw three hitless innings against the Mets on July 15 in his first career relief appearance.

Trevor Story, pinch-hitter Pat Valaika and Mark Reynolds hit two-run homers during a seven-run sixth.

Ivan Nova (10-7) allowed a season-high seven runs and nine hits in five-plus innings.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Luis Valbuena hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the seventh off Rick Porcello (4-13), and Mike Trout and Andrelton Simmons also homered.

Parker Bridwell (4-1) gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings. Bud Norris earned his 15th save when Xander Bogaerts hit into a game-ending double play.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Wil Myers homered for the third straight game against San Francisco, and Jabari Blash hit a go-ahead two-run double in the decisive fourth to back Dinelson Lamet (4-4).

San Diego hit three straight doubles in the fourth and four consecutive hits in all against lefty Ty Blach (6-6). Brad Hand, the Padres' third reliever, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.

13) I get annoyed when people tell me that they cannot write. ANYONE CAN WRITE!!! If you can talk, you can write. Take a recorder, turn it on and tell stories into it. Then replay what you said, transcribe it into a Word document and voila!!! You have written!!!

Good Lord, if you read this every day, you must know that any damn fool can write his own website. If I can do it, sure as shootin’ you can do it, too.

12) Does Kyrie Irving know that Gregg Popovich will be 69 years old in January, and probably won’t coach much longer? As soon as Pop leaves the Alamo, the Spurs are going to take a big dip. Mr Irving might want to keep that in mind before he jumps overboard from Team Lebron.

11) Do you think Saturday Night Live should offer Sean Spicer a guest hosting spot? Imagine if he went on the show and was really funny? He’d become a hero to the working class.

10) When games at AT&T Park in San Francisco run long and seagulls threaten to overrun the outfield, looking for food, they play “Everybody clap your hands!!!” over the PA system to chase the seagulls away. Odd thing to see. It works. For a few minutes.

9) My friend John e-mailed to remind me that the Cincinnati Airport is actually in Kentucky, which is weird. Kentucky is just over the bridge from Ohio. Cincinnati Bearcats will be playing home games in Northern Kentucky U’s gym this winter; their gym is being refurbished.

8) Weird Al Yankovic went to college at Cal-Poly; in 1979, he recorded “My Bologna” in a campus restroom. The school has put up a plaque commemorating the song on a wall outside the restroom.

7) LaVar Ball got mad at a ref at an AAU game Saturday and pulled his team off the floor, forfeiting the game. Problem is, HIS TEAM LED 69-60 when he forfeited the game.

Not sure where to start with this, but:
a) He probably cost his team a win, and valuable playing time where recruiters can watch them play. Why?
b) What exactly is he teaching the kids who play for him?
c) Does he do outrageous things just to stay in the news?
d) Do the parents of the kids on his team call him out on this behavior?

6) Red flag for the Astros: in Lance McCullers’ last three starts, he’s failed to finish the 5th inning in any of them, allowing 24 hits, 17 runs in 13.2 innings. Houston needs to add at least one starting pitcher by the trade deadline.

5) When Astros’ rookie Colin Moran fouled a ball off his face Saturday night, he broke a bone under his left eye and is now on the DL. Freak accident, and a painful one.

4) Wink Martindale posted this fact on Twitter Saturday: “A raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up & down continuously from the bottom of glass to the top”

Who discovered that this is true? I mean, you have a glass of champagne sitting there, and then some wiseguy with a raisin throws it in there and everyone watches?

3) Clayton Kershaw tweaked his lower back, was taken out after the second inning Sunday. Dodgers were -$400 in Las Vegas.

Important lesson here: “There is no such thing as a sure thing, thats why they call it….gambling.” Do you want to be laying -$400 with Ross Stripling on the hill? You do not.

Dodgers won in 10 innings anyway, but laying -$400 on a baseball game is a very bad idea.

2) I’m discouraged by how the A’s are playing (44-54), but how about 44-54 Toronto, with a payroll of $163,381,937? Oakland’s payroll is $81,738,333, which is no excuse for how dismal a team they have, but the Blue Jays are just plain awful.

1) Random fact: If John McCain were uninsured, his blood clot surgery could have cost $76,000. Good thing for him politicians have way better medical coverage than most Americans.

MLB notebook: Kershaw (back tightness) headed for DL
July 23, 2017

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw left Los Angeles' game against the Atlanta Braves after two innings Sunday due to right lower back tightness.

Kershaw was scheduled to see Dr. Robert Watkins on Sunday evening for tests. Manager Dave Roberts said Kershaw would go on the 10-day disabled list no matter the results.

This is not the first time Kershaw has dealt with a back issue. Last year, he missed 2 1/2 months during the season with a herniated disk that didn't require surgery. He said he felt something different on his final warmup pitch in the second inning.

Kershaw struck out two, walked one and didn't allow a hit or a run while throwing 21 pitches before exiting. He is 15-2 with a 2.04 ERA and is having another Cy Young Award-caliber season. Kershaw hasn't lost a start since May 1.

--Washington Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg was lifted after pitching two scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Strasburg said after the game that he was experiencing achiness in his forearm that he felt in his last outing and that exiting early was a precautionary measure.

Strasburg has been injury-free this season, but he has a lengthy list of ailments that date to his rookie season in 2010. He is 10-3 with a 3.25 ERA this season.

--The Nationals recalled catcher Pedro Severino and selected the contract of outfielder Andrew Stevenson from Triple-A Syracuse.

Outfielder Ryan Raburn was placed on the bereavement list, and outfielder Chris Heisey was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left groin strain.

Additionally, outfielder Jayson Werth (left foot contusion) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

--Houston Astros rookie third baseman Colin Moran was placed on the 10-day disabled list a day after he sustained a facial fracture from a deflected inside pitch.

Moran was carted off the field in the sixth inning of the Astros' 8-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday after the left-handed hitter fouled off a pitch from reliever Darren O'Day straight up and into the area near his left eye.

The 24-year-old Moran started this series 3-for-6, including a 1-for-2 effort Saturday. He was playing in only his second game this season after being called up Tuesday following an injury to All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa.

--New York Yankees second baseman Starlin Castro returned to the 10-day disabled list with another injury to his right hamstring.

Castro was activated off the DL on July 15 but reinjured the hamstring while running out a ground ball on Wednesday at Minnesota. The latest move is retroactive to Saturday. Castro played in the first two games of the series at Seattle on Thursday and Friday, with one hit in eight at-bats.

Castro is hitting .307 with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs in 79 games this season.

LEADING OFF: Kershaw, Strasburg ailing; Cubs get boost

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

AILING ALL OVER

Star pitchers Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers and Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals are recovering after getting injured Sunday, as is Cardinals on-base machine Matt Carpenter. Kershaw is headed to the disabled list with another back injury, this time suffering from tightness in the lower right side. Strasburg, meanwhile, says he hasn't felt right since the All-Star break because of ''achiness " in his forearm - he left after two innings Sunday to hopefully ''nip it in the bud now.'' Carpenter is dealing with right quad tightness , and it was unclear if he'd be ready for St. Louis' game against Colorado.

HERE HE COMES

The Cubs could get another boost with the return of Kyle Hendricks, who has been sidelined by pain in the middle finger of his right hand. Hendricks will make his first start since June 4 when the Cubs host the crosstown White Sox. The right-hander went 16-6 with a major league-best 2.13 ERA last season, but has been limited to just 11 starts this year. ''My finger's feeling good,'' Hendricks said. ''So it took that amount of time and it is what it is. Obviously I would have liked to come back sooner, but yeah, I'm glad we took the course we did and hopefully it can pay out later down the road.''

THE GREAT JAKE

Mets ace Jacob deGrom (11-3, 3.37 ERA) has won seven straight starts. He has a 1.51 ERA in that span, striking out 50 and walking 10. He'll try to extend the streak when New York begins a 10-game road trip by visiting San Diego.

STRUGGLING CAIN

San Francisco right-hander Matt Cain (3-8, 5.49) will try to avoid matching the longest losing streak of his career at eight games - from July 28, 2015-May 10, 2016 - when he pitches the series opener at home against Pittsburgh.

ACTION PAXTON

Mariners left-hander James Paxton (9-3, 3.06) is 4-0 with 2.05 ERA in four July starts. He'll make his third career start against Boston, and he's 1-0 with a 0.56 ERA against the Red Sox. He'll be opposed by lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (4-2, 3.66).

Top Contender Concerns

With double-digit game leads in their respective divisions and record setting paces, it is easy to project a World Series matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros. Both teams deserve to be the clear favorites in their leagues, but here are a few concerns for baseball’s top contenders with the second half of the season underway.

The best regular season team doesn’t usually win the World Series: With 103 wins, the 2016 Chicago Cubs had the top record and baseball and they went on to win the World Series as well in dramatic fashion to snap a long run of futility for the franchise. The Cubs were the first National League team to post the best record in baseball and also win the World Series since the 1986 New York Mets and only the 1995 Atlanta Braves in a strike-shortened season joins those two NL teams having the top NL record while also capturing the World Series. A handful of American League teams have accomplished the feat, but it is not the norm with the Cubs being only the sixth team overall to pace baseball and win the World Series since the Mets in ’86.

Wild Card Winners are dangerous: The change to a one-game wild card matchup in the 2012 season put more emphasis on winning the division and less value on being the wild card with a one-game do-or-die situation for those squads. While being in a wild card spot is less desirable in the current format, being the team that wins a wild card game can be a springboard to a great postseason run. In 2014, the Royals won a wild card game and kept playing until Game 7 of the World Series. In 2016, the Blue Jays were wild card winners and then also advanced to the ALCS. The 2014 Giants were World Series champions starting from a wild card spot while the 2012 Cardinals and the 2015 Cubs also won division series matchups from the wild card spot, upsetting the NL’s top seeds.

Based solely on records, right now the #2 seeds in each league would be at an advantage over the #1 seeds as the current Central division leaders that would be the #3 seeds are weaker teams than the top wild card teams. Subjectively, the Indians and Cubs could emerge in the Central title spots to change that equation but should the Brewers, Twins, or Royals win a Central division title, undoubtedly that will be a preferable draw for the East division winners than the wild card winner that the Dodgers or Astros would likely end up facing in the division round.

The Dodgers reliance on left-handed pitching: Clayton Kershaw, Alex Wood, and Rich Hill have amazing numbers with a combined 32-6 record with great strikeout rates and ERAs. Having three excellent left-handed starters in the rotation is a luxury any team would love to have, but in the potential NL playoff landscape, it may create less than ideal matchups for the Dodgers. The Dodgers had the NL’s best team OPS vs. left-handed pitching in the first half of the season at .819, but the next five teams on that list are five of the six teams in contention for NL playoff spots with the Cubs (.802), Nationals (.793), Braves (.790), Brewers (.779), and Rockies (.779). Only Arizona struggles against left-handed pitching among the potential postseason opponents for the Dodgers and the Dodgers could wind up needing to beat two of those teams to reach the World Series.

The Dodgers are good enough to out-slug any of those teams in a short series, but the pitching advantage that Los Angeles might appear to have could be overstated in a short series. Against those five teams that excel against left-handed pitching, Los Angeles is only a modest 14-10 as the amazing record this season has been built on going a combined 32-3 vs. a marginal grouping of squads (Reds, Royals, Marlins, Mets, Phillies, Pirates, and Padres). Despite the Diamondbacks struggling vs. left-handed pitching, they have actually out-scored the Dodgers despite losing six of the 10 meetings this season.

Houston has struggled against the AL’s top teams: Houston has put up incredible scoring results to pull away with a huge lead in the AL West, creating little urgency for the team to make aggressive moves at the trade deadline. Houston is 25-9 vs. the Mariners, Rangers, and Athletics, outscoring those division rivals by 68 runs in 34 games. Against teams the Astros might actually see in the postseason, the numbers are troubling however, going 1-2 vs. Boston and 1-5 vs. Cleveland this season. Houston is 5-2 vs. the Yankees, but they only outscored New York by two runs combined in those seven games.

Houston has a +169 net scoring differential on the season, but they are +118 runs in games decided by five or more runs as they have poured on meaningless runs on several occasions in contests that were already in hand yet rarely have suffered a lopsided defeat. Houston has also gone 7-0 in interleague action drawing marginal Atlanta and Miami squads from the NL East as the path to the great record has been favorable so far and the team hasn’t been in a lot of tense close games in the late innings similar to what may be ahead in the postseason.

Recent playoff demons for the Dodgers: Since winning the 1988 World Series, the Dodgers have lost 10 of 14 playoff series that they have been involved in, going 22-37 in the individual playoff games including losing in the NLCS four times in the last nine years. Kershaw will unfairly shoulder some of the blame for the recent playoff failures and it is true that his postseason ERA is 4.55 in 89 innings and he was shelled in both of his critical NLCS Game 6 starts, allowing 12 runs in nine innings in 2013 and 2016. Wood owns a 4.91 ERA in his four playoff outings, Hill owns a 4.50 ERA in four playoff outings, Kenta Maeda had a 6.75 ERA in last season’s playoffs, and Brandon McCarthy has never pitched in the postseason as there will be questions for the starting staff in October. That concern is also making a big assumption that this quintet of starters with a lengthy injury history will be active on the playoff roster.

Playoff Inexperience for the Astros: Houston was deemed ahead of schedule with a run to the wild card game in the 2015 season, going 86-76 in the regular season. The Astros bested the Yankees in that game and then took a 2-1 ALDS lead on the Royals. Inexperience showed as Houston crumbled and lost the series, blowing early leads in all three games they lost in the series including notably losing Game 4 with the series on the line despite a 6-2 lead in the eighth inning.

Given the huge division lead and a current 10.5-game edge over the AL’s #2 team Houston isn’t likely to have an overly meaningful game the rest of the regular season and will have to jump into October playoff intensity against a team that will have some momentum off a wild card game win. Add that star shortstop Carlos Correa is likely to be out until late in the regular season and this is a team that might get a wake-up call in the playoffs against a team that plays its way into the postseason despite the gaudy regular season numbers for Houston that will have been built mostly in early season action.
