  • MLB roundup: Nationals get walkoff win
    July 3, 2017

WASHINGTON -- Ryan Raburn hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 3-2 on Monday night.

The hit to shallow left off Fernando Salas scored Matt Wieters, who led off the ninth with a walk, took second on a walk by pinch hitter Stephen Drew and went to third on a flyout by pinch hitter Adam Lind.

The winning pitcher was Matt Albers (4-1), who gave up two runs in the ninth. Paul Sewald (0-3) was hit with the loss as he allowed the walk to Wieters.

New York's Curtis Granderson hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer on a 0-2 count with two outs in the top of the ninth off Albers to tie the score at 2.

    Phillies 4, Pirates 0

PHILADELPHIA -- Aaron Nola threw seven scoreless innings as Philadelphia downed Pittsburgh.

The Phillies, who have won four of their past six games after losing 16 of 19, got two-run home runs from Freddy Galvis and Maikel Franco.

Nola (6-5) allowed four hits, walked one and struck out eight, continuing a string of strong starts.

    Brewers 8, Orioles 1

MILWAUKEE -- Brent Suter struck out a career-high eight batters in six innings during a spot start, and Milwaukee jumped on Baltimore starter Wade Miley early and cruised to victory.

Filling the spot vacated when Chase Anderson landed on the disabled list a week ago, Suter (1-1) held Baltimore to an unearned run, four hits and a walk.

The Brewers' bats did their part, putting four on the board in the opening inning against Miley, who lasted just 1 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs, seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

    Yankees 6, Blue Jays 3

NEW YORK -- Masahiro Tanaka pitched seven effective innings, and New York added four insurance runs in the eighth inning and held on for a victory over Toronto.

Tanaka (7-7) allowed one run and five hits while dodging trouble at key points. He walked one and struck out eight in a 111-pitch showing that gave him a 1.29 ERA in his last three outings.

Chase Headley drove in three runs for the Yankees, while Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez each had two hits and two runs.

    Cardinals 14, Marlins 6

ST. LOUIS -- Tommy Pham had three hits and two walks as St. Louis routed Miami.

Yadier Molina went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a sacrifice fly and three RBIs, one night after seeing his 16-game hitting streak end. Stephen Piscotty added two hits, two runs and an RBI as St. Louis battered five Miami pitchers for 15 hits in winning for the seventh time in nine games.

Rookie Luke Voit capped the huge evening with his first major league homer, a two-run blast to center in the eighth that traveled 429 feet. Voit finished 2-for-5 with a game-high four RBIs.

    Twins 9, Angels 5

MINNEAPOLIS -- Max Kepler had four hits, including a solo homer, and drove in four runs, and Adalberto Mejia continued his strong run of starts as Minnesota returned home to defeat Los Angeles.

Joe Mauer added a two-run homer, and Miguel Sano had three hits and two RBIs for Minnesota, which finished an 11-game, three-city road trip on Sunday with its sixth loss in eight games. The Twins started the day with the lowest home winning percentage in baseball at .390 (16-25).

Mejia (4-3) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and a walk. He struck out five and ran his scoreless innings streak to 13 2/3 innings before three straight hits opened the fourth inning and led to two runs for the Angels.

    Rockies 5, Reds 3

DENVER -- A pair of rookies helped Colorado open a crucial homestand with a win over Cincinnati.

Rockies starter Jeff Hoffman (5-1) gave up three runs and four hits, two of them solo homers, in a career-high-tying seven innings. Hoffman faced just one batter with a runner in scoring position in his 90-pitch outing that included three walks and four strikeouts.

Raimel Tapia finished a single shy of the cycle. He tripled and scored in the second, doubled in the third and hit his second homer of the season in the sixth to put the Rockies ahead 4-3. Tapia led off the eighth and struck out on three pitches.

    • MLB notebook: Judge, Sanchez to participate in HR Derby
      July 3, 2017

Home run leader Aaron Judge and fellow New York Yankee teammate Gary Sanchez announced Monday that they will participate in the Home Run Derby next week in Miami.

The announcement was made via the Yankees' Twitter account. The derby will be held at Marlins Park next Monday and features defending champion Giancarlo Stanton of Miami.

Judge, 25, leads the majors in home runs (27) during his rookie season and his batting average (.327) and RBIs (62) are tops in the American League. The 6-foot-7 sensation was the AL's top vote-getter in fan balloting for the All-Star Game and will start in right field.

Sanchez, who has belted 13 homers in 2017, is one season removed from going deep 11 times during a 15-game stretch in August.

--Bryce Harper cranked a pair of home runs in his most recent game, but that power won't be on display just prior to this year's All-Star Game.

The star right fielder of the Washington Nationals told ESPN that there's "no chance" he will compete in the Home Run Derby as part of the All-Star festivities next week.

Harper was the leading vote-getter when the National League All-Star team was announced Sunday. He is among three starters and five selections overall for National League East-leading Washington.

Harper, the NL Most Valuable Player in 2015, competed in the Home Run Derby in 2013 at New York's Citi Field, finishing second to Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes.

--The Los Angeles Angels confirmed that outfielder Mike Trout will not participate in next week's All-Star Game as he rehabs a left thumb injury.

The reigning American League MVP has missed 33 games after having surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament and dorsal capsule in the thumb.

Trout, who was hitting .337 with 16 home runs and 36 RBIs before the injury, was elected as a starter for the American League for the fifth straight year.

--Miguel Montero was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays after being designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs last week.

The veteran catcher learned of the trade five days after he was released in the midst of a public spat started when Montero criticized right-handed starter Jake Arrieta for allowing seven stolen bases in a loss to the Washington Nationals.

Montero is 0-for-31 throwing out baserunners this season. The 33-year-old was primarily a backup to Willson Contreras in Chicago. He's owed $7 million on the remainder of his contract.

      • LEADING OFF: Sabathia returns for Yankees
        July 3, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Tuesday:

        THE BIG MAN IS BACK

CC Sabathia (7-2, 3.46 ERA) comes off the disabled list for the banged-up Yankees to start against J.A. Happ (2-5, 3.71) and the Blue Jays. Sabathia has been sidelined since June 14 with a strained left hamstring. ''I feel good. I'm ready to go, so I'm excited to be out there,'' he said. ''Right now we're just battling, trying to win games, get healthy, get everybody back and make a run for the second half.'' New York also expects to activate reliever Adam Warren from the DL before the game. Warren has been out since June 16 because of right shoulder inflammation.

        BACK TO WORK

AL MVP Mike Trout will miss the All-Star Game while rehabilitating his left thumb. The Los Angeles Angels star outfielder tore the ulnar collateral ligament in the thumb on May 28 during a headfirst slide and had surgery three days later to repair the ligament and dorsal capsule. The team said Monday he will work out Tuesday at Class A Inland Empire.

        BABY BOMBERS

Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez, the Baby Bombers who lead the New York Yankees' offense, will participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby at Miami on July 10.

Judge, a rookie who homered in his first major league at-bat last August, tops the majors with 27 home runs.

Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton will defend his title in his home ballpark. Also lined up to compete are Miami teammate Justin Bour, Minnesota slugger Miguel Sano and Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger, who began the day leading the National League with 24 homers.

Colorado outfielder Charlie Blackmon and Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas round out the field.

        NORTH OF THE BORDER

Cast off by the World Series champions, Miguel Montero has a new home north of the border. The veteran catcher was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, six days after he blamed Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta for allowing seven stolen bases in a 6-1 loss to Washington.

Toronto acquired the two-time All-Star and cash for a player to be named or cash. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Montero will join the team Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

                • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
                  July 4, 2017

Hottest team: Giants (6-0 past six games)

The Giants have rolled to six straight victories, playing their best baseball of the season. The Giants are coming off an impressive three-game sweep of the Pirates in Pittsburgh, and that comes on the heels of a three-game sweep against the previously hot Rockies. San Francisco has outscored their opponents 38-17 during the impressive six-game run, allowing three or fewer runs in five of the outings. The Giants look for their seventh straight against Michael Fulmer, and the Tigers are just 2-5 over his past seven outings. However, at home he has been much better, as the Tigers are 8-3 in his past 11 assignments at Comerica Park.

Coldest team: Athletics (0-6 past six games, 4-10 past 14 overall)

On the other side of the bay, the Athletics have been one of the coldest teams in baseball. They can't seem to buy a hit lately, averaging just 2.0 runs per game over the past five outings. The A's are 0-7 in their past seven home games against a right-handed starter, 0-5 in their past five home games against a team with a losing record and 0-5 in their past five overall vs. RHP. They have also dropped eight in a row overall at home. 'Big Game' James Shields hasn't been much better for the White Sox, and the team is 7-15 over his past 22 overall, 1-5 over his past six road outings and 1-9 in his past 10 against teams with a losing overall mark.

Hottest pitcher: Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers (12-2, 2.32 ERA)

The All-Star Kershaw will be on the mound against the Diamondbacks hoping to avoid the fireworks he has provided in recent starts. He has already served up a career-high 17 homers through 116 1/3 innings, although he has limited the damage somehow since he still ranks third in the majors with a 2.32 ERA while striking out 135 batters with a .202 opponent batting average and sparkling 0.91 WHIP. The Snakes are just 1-4 over their past five against left-handed pitchers and they're 1-10 in their past 11 with Patrick Corbin making a road start. Arizona is also 0-4 in Corbin's past four starts against the Dodgers, while L.A. is 8-3 in Kershaw's past 11 at home against the D-Backs and 5-1 in his past six outings against Arizona overall. The Diamondbacks are also a dismal 7-24 in their past 31 forays into Chavez Ravine.

Coldest pitcher: Homer Bailey, Reds (0-2, 27.00 ERA)

Bailey is making his way back after major reconstructive elbow surgery and he hasn't looked good in his two outings since returning to the big club. He has allowed 14 runs and 12 hits in just 4 2/3 innings while walking five batters and striking out four. The Reds have really been struggling with or without Bailey, going 5-22 over their past 27 road games and 6-17 in their past 23 games overall. The Reds are also just 14-38 in their past 52 games against a left-handed starter on the road, so it will be an uphill climb for Bailey. Cincinnati is also just 14-33 in their past 47 tries at Coors Field.

Biggest UNDER run: Rockies (5-0-1 past six overall)

The 'under' is not exactly the first thing you think of when talking about the Rockies. However, these Rockies have been ice cold lately. Their pitching has been above-average, while their offense has been struggling. Of course, that 5-0-1 'under' streak for Colorado could be in jeopardy with Bailey scuffling on the mound for the Reds. The 'under' is an impressive 7-0 over Kyle Freeland's past seven home starts and 12-2-2 across his past 16 starts overall. The under is also 4-0 in Colorado's past four vs. RHP and 2-0-2 in his past four against teams with a losing overall mark. Of course, the over is 4-1 in the past five meetings in this series with a 10-4-1 record in the past 15 meetings at Coors Field.

Biggest OVER run: Rangers (4-0 past four overall)

The Rangers haven't been doing terribly well lately, and the over has been the result for Texas. The over is 4-0 in their past four games overall, 15-5-1 in their past 21 games at home and 5-0-2 in Yu Darvish's past seven home starts against a team with a winning overall record. The over is also 3-1-1 in the past five at home for the Rangers against winning teams. In this series the over is 4-1 in the past five meetings, although the under is 12-5-1 in the past 18 meetings in Arlington.

Matchup to watch: Indians vs. Padres

The Padres and Indians clash in a rare interleague series. San Diego has the misfortune of facing the American League pitcher of the month of June, Corey Kluber. He is 7-2 with a 3.02 ERA, 20 walks and 105 strikeouts over 80 1/3 innings. He has lasted at least seven innings in each of his past four outings while turning in quality starts in each of the past six outings. In addition, Kluber has rolled up 10 or more strikeouts in five of the past six starts. That's bad news for a Padres offense which has struck out 772 times across 82 games (9.41 per game) to rank fifth in the majors. San Diego also ranks dead last in runs scored with 296, 20 fewer than the next worst team.

Betcha didn’t know: The Orioles pitching staff has struggled mightily, and Ubaldo Jimenez is no exception. While he did look sensational last time out against the Blue Jays, working eight scoreless innings with a season-high eight strikeouts, he still has a dismal 6.48 ERA overall. He is 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA across six starts against the Brewers. The Orioles are actually an impressive 12-5 across Jimenez's past 17 starts, and and even better 10-1 in his past 11 interleague assignments. While they're 7-21 over the past 28 road games, they might have the right pitcher on the mound for success.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-300) vs. Diamondbacks, Indians (-300) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: Red Sox (+125) at Rangers

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-275 to -300) vs. Diamondbacks

                        *************************************

Wednesday’s List of 13: Happy 5th of July!!!!

                        13) Gordon Hayward signed with the Celtics, then wrote an article thanking Utah.

I get tired of players bolting teams, then writing an article thanking the previous city for everything. If you loved it so much, why don’t you stay? He gets four years, $128M from the Celtics, but he would’ve gotten that in Utah, too- he might’ve gotten more than that.

Maybe its because I’m an A’s fan and I’ve spent the last 42 years seeing our best players either leave via free agency or get traded (at a loss) before that happens. Losing isn’t fun.

But at least guys who bolt the A’s are leaving for huge raises. This isn’t about money. Jazz traded for Ricky Rubio to try and entice Hayward to stay in Utah. Now what? Their franchise is screwed.

                        12) Celtics’ title odds jump from 15-1 to 12-1 with Hayward aboard; Utah’s drop from 150-1 to 250-1. If you want to bet on the Jazz to win the NBA title, just go give the money to a homeless guy— at least that money will help someone.

                        11) Celtics beat the 76ers 89-88 in the first game of the Utah Summer League Monday night; Jayson Tatum finished with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals in 34 minutes, while Markelle Fultz put up 17 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 blocks for the Sixers.

Who wins these games don’t matter much; both players played well, which matters a lot.

                        10) Boston Globe newspaper publishes the entire Declaration of Independence every 4th of July.

                        9) Joey Chestnut won the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest by downing 72 hot dogs in 10:00 in Brooklyn Tuesday. I am told the average American eats 70 hot dogs a year.

                        8) Daniel Murphy has 34 RBI in 31 games against the Mets, who let him walk two years ago.

                        7) First-place Milwaukee Brewers are only 33-1 to win the World Series. Not a lot of faith there.

                        6) Midwestern trivia: Barbed wire was invented in DeKalb, Illinois.

                        5) Tigers’ star Miguel Cabrera left Tuesday’s game with left hip tightness, bad news for Detroit and Cabrera’s fantasy owners (I am not one).

                        4) Freddie Freeman was activated Tuesday and is now the Braves’ third baseman, so they can keep Matt Adams in the lineup at first base. He lined a single to center in his first at-bat back.

                        3) Why are phone solicitors calling me on July 4th, trying to sell me solar energy panels? It is a damn national holiday; go have some potato salad and leave me the bleep alone.

                        2) I understand the Marlins aren’t very good this year, but their entire pre-game show Tuesday was about the All-Star Game or Home Run Derby, which are a week from now. Enough.

The constant badgering to vote for Justin Bour in the Final 5 voting intrudes on the game.

                        1) Gonzaga basketball coach Mark Few still hasn’t watched his team’s national title game with North Carolina from three months ago; John Calipari hasn’t watched the Memphis-Kansas national title game his Tigers lost at the very end. Apparently, successful people prefer to look ahead.

                        Added Note:

                        Quote of the Day

“There was nothing going on. I had a couple of beers. So I’m like, ‘I think I’m going to watch those games,. So I go to pull them up on the DVR and Marcy, my wife, has … deleted everything. My daughter has 47 episodes of a Disney show on there. One of my sons is totally addicted to Modern Family. So there are 57 Modern Family episodes on the DVR. And Seinfeld. The Voice. Everything. And I’m like, ‘You deleted my greatest professional achievement, after 30 years in the business, my greatest professional moment for 47 Disney episodes? What were you thinking?’ It was a total WTF moment.”

                        • MLB notebook: Braves activate Freeman, move him to 3B
                          July 4, 2017

The Atlanta Braves activated standout Freddie Freeman from the disabled list on Tuesday and are moving him to third base.

Freeman broke his left wrist May 17 and the Braves traded for first baseman Matt Adams during his absence.

Freeman was to start at third base Tuesday night against the Houston Astros, the club announced.

Freeman, who had played first base his entire time in the majors, began working out at third base two weeks ago during his recovery period. He last played third base in 2017 as a 17-year-old in the rookie Gulf Coast League.

The 27-year-old was batting .341 with 14 homers and 25 RBIs before sustaining his injury.

--Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona missed Tuesday night's game against the San Diego Padres.

Francona was at the Cleveland Clinic on Tuesday for more tests because of an accelerated heart issue that has caused him to be taken the facility in the middle of games twice in the last three weeks. Bench coach Brad Mills will be the Indians' acting manager until Francona returns.

"They are in the process of trying to narrow down exactly what's been causing his symptoms," Indians president Chris Antonetti said. "So he's back at the Clinic tonight getting some additional tests, with the hope that they can better determine what's been causing him to have episodes of not feeling great."

Antonetti said Francona had no episodes during Cleveland's three-game series in Detroit over the weekend. Asked if Francona would manage Wednesday's game against San Diego, Antonetti said, "We're still working through that. It depends upon how long and what tests they need to do."

--The Toronto Blue Jays activated catcher Miguel Montero prior to Tuesday afternoon's game against the host New York Yankees.

Backup catcher Luke Maile was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right knee inflammation to make room for Montero, who was acquired Monday after being designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs.

Chicago parted ways with Montero in the midst of a public spat that started when the 33-year-old criticized right-hander Jake Arrieta for allowing seven stolen bases in a loss to the Washington Nationals.

--Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward was activated from the disabled list prior to Tuesday's afternoon game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Wrigley Field.

Heyward has been sidelined since June 18 with a hand injury sustained while sliding for a foul ball in Pittsburgh. The 27-year-old started in right field and went 1-for-4.

Heyward is batting .257 with six homers and 30 RBIs this season, his second with Chicago. Chicago also promoted left-hander Jack Leathersich from Iowa and optioned infielder Jeimer Candelario and right-hander Felix Pena to the Triple-A club.

--New York Mets left fielder T.J. Rivera left Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals in the seventh inning after he limped to first base while running out a ground ball.

Rivera was 2-for-4 prior to the injury. Matt Reynolds took over in left field.

                          • LEADING OFF: Judge closing in on DiMaggio; Maddon vs Rays
                            July 5, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

                            GET WELL, TITO

Indians manager Terry Francona is hoping to get past some recent health issues. Francona was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic for tests and missed Tuesday night's game against San Diego. The 58-year-old skipper was hospitalized twice last month after becoming lightheaded and having a rapid heart rate. He was fitted with a heart monitor last week and said at the time doctors had ruled out any serious health problems. Team president Chris Antonetti said Francona did not experience the previous symptoms again, and the tests were being done to help determine what's causing the issue. Antonetti didn't know if Francona would spend the night at the hospital or when he would resume his managerial duties. Bench coach Brad Mills has run the Indians in Francona's absence.

                            CHASING JOE D

New York Yankees sensation Aaron Judge leads the majors with 28 home runs and needs one to tie Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio's franchise record for rookies set in 1939. ''He strikes fear into you, that's for sure,'' Toronto manager John Gibbons said. Judge and the Yankees face Blue Jays righty Marco Estrada (4-6) in the rubber match of a three-game set. Estrada is 0-4 in six starts since beating Texas on May 27. New York has lost 15 of 21 after a 38-23 start and is 0-5-1 in its last six series.

                            OLD FRIENDS

Joe Maddon and the Chicago Cubs wrap up a two-game interleague series at Wrigley Field against his former team, the Tampa Bay Rays. Maddon managed against the Rays on Tuesday for the first time since he left the club following the 2014 season. Tampa Bay took the opener, 6-5. Maddon chatted with Evan Longoria and some of his former staffers, such as pitching coach Jim Hickey and third base coach Tom Foley, as the Rays took batting practice. ''They're a great bunch of guys,'' Maddon said. ''There's a lot of humor on that side, and I got my giggles in.'' Before leading the Cubs to a World Series title last season, their first in 108 years, Maddon deftly guided small-market Tampa Bay to a 754-705 record, four playoff appearances, two AL East titles and the 2008 AL pennant during his nine-year run.

                            ON A ROLL

Royals lefty Jason Vargas (12-2) goes for his AL-leading 13th win before heading off to the All-Star Game next week. Vargas, who pitches as Seattle, leads the AL in wins and ERA (2.22) and has won his past seven starts.

                            NEED A STOPPER

Jacob deGrom (8-3, 3.55 ERA) pitches for the New York Mets as they try to avoid a three-game by NL East-leading Washington. The right-hander is 4-0 with a 0.84 ERA in his last four outings, but nobody on the New York staff has been able to slow down ex-teammate Daniel Murphy. The All-Star second baseman is batting .405 against his only previous big league team. ''I saw it live and in person for five years,'' Mets manager Terry Collins lamented. ''You've got to locate or he's going to get a hit.'' Mets outfielders Yoenis Cespedes (leg cramps) and Curtis Granderson (hip) are banged up, but Nationals right-hander Tanner Roark (6-6, 5.27) has an 11.88 ERA over his last four starts.

                            YOU, AGAIN

All-Star righty Ervin Santana (10-5, 3.07 ERA) faces his old team as Minnesota tries for a three-game sweep of the Angels. Santana is 1-3 in four career starts against the Angels, and hasn't beaten them since July 23, 2015.

                            ON THE MEND

Orioles closer Zach Britton is expected to be activated. Britton, who has been on the disabled list since April with a left forearm strain, was 47 for 47 in save chances last year and had a 0.54 ERA in 69 games. He is 0-0 with five saves and a 1.00 ERA in eight games this season. ... Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong begins a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield. Wong was placed on the 10-day disabled list June 15 with a triceps injury.
