  • MLB notebook: Cubs send Schwarber to Triple-A
    June 22, 2017

The Chicago Cubs demoted struggling outfielder Kyle Schwarber to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday and also placed outfielder Jason Heyward on the disabled list with a cut hand.

Schwarber is batting just .171 with 12 homers and 28 RBIs this season. The 24-year-old has struck out 75 times in 222 at-bats.

"There is no actual timetable," Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters in reference to how long Schwarber will be with Iowa. "I don't anticipate it to be long. We'll see how it plays out."

Schwarber batted .412 and drove in two runs in his team's World Series victory over the Cleveland Indians.

The Cubs recalled outfielder Mark Zagunis and right-hander Dylan Floro from Iowa.

--The Oakland Athletics designated catcher Stephen Vogt for assignment.

Vogt was named to the All-Star Game in both 2015 and 2016, but has struggled mightily this season. The 32-year-old is batting .217 with four homers and 20 RBIs in 2017.

Oakland also placed rookie third baseman Matt Chapman on the 10-day disabled list with a knee infection and recalled catcher Bruce Maxwell and first baseman Matt Olson from Triple-A Nashville.

--Houston Astros center fielder George Springer was hit by a pitch on his left hand while leading off in the top of the first inning against Oakland and left the game at the Oakland Coliseum.

Springer, according to the Astros, is day to day.

Springer was hit by A's right-hander Jesse Hahn's 92 mph fastball on a 3-1 count. Springer has 21 home runs overall and leads the major leagues with eight leadoff homers.

--Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez isn't interested in rushing his way back from a herniated disk in his back and plans to miss the next month rehabilitating the injury.

Gonzalez, who was placed on the disabled list June 13, tentatively has set a late July date for his return to the diamond.

Manager Dave Roberts is more optimistic as he said the team is hopeful that the 35-year-old would return prior to the All-Star break, which begins July 10.

--Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz will have a street named in his honor in Beantown.

The Boston mayor's office declared that a street near Fenway Park will be renamed David Ortiz Drive. It is currently known as Yawkey Way Extension.

      • *MLB Daily Line Drive: Friday's Picks, Betting Odds and Analysis*

        *Double-Play Picks

Cincinnati Reds at Washington Nationals (-265, 9)*

The Washington Nationals return home after a seven-game road trip and welcome the Cincinnati Reds to town Friday for the opening game of their three day weekend series.

Both teams come into today's game riding pretty decent offensive waves. The Reds have lost 11 of their last 12 games, but they can still hit the baseball. Over their last four they are averaging 5.5 runs per game and they rank fourth in the National League in home runs and third in OPS. The Nationals, of course, are the top offensive team in the N.L., topping the stats tables in almost every category (runs, home runs, batting average, slugging percentage, and OPS), and are averaging 6.5 runs per game over their last 10 contests.

The Reds will be sending right-hander Luis Castillo to the hill at Nationals Park for his major league debut. Castillo brings 100 mile per hour potential and a low walk rate up from AA this season (10 walks over 56 innings)...but this isn't AA.

Stephen Strasburg gets the ball for the Nats and he has been hittable at home this season with a 4.15 ERA and six home runs allowed on home soil. The other factor for totals bettors in this game should be the Nationals bullpen that is still dealing with injury issues and ranks last in the National League with a 5.04 ERA.

The Over is 7-1-1 in the Reds' last nine road games and 9-2-1 in their last 12 overall. The Over is 8-2 in the Nats' last 10 overall, including their last three home games.

Wind: 15-18 miles per hour OUT to right-center field.

        *Pick: Over 9

Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks (-200, 9.5)*

The Philadelphia Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks go to battle this evening in Phoenix in the first of a four-game series and this one is a clear-cut case of two teams headed in exact opposite directions. The Phils come to town as losers of 13 of their last 15, including losses in their last seven road games. The D-Backs return home off a very successful eight-game road trip where they ripped off seven victories and they are 12-2 in their last 14 games overall.

Phillies rookie Mark Leiter will make his first big league start today. He has made 12 appearances out of the bullpen this season and his road results are rather alarming with an ERA of 8.68, a WHIP of 1.61, and only five strikeouts to go along with eight walks over 9.1 innings pitched.

Lefty Patrick Corbin gets the ball for Arizona and he has been very good at Chase Field this season with a team win/loss record of 7-1 and a solid ERA of 3.45. He will be facing a Phillies offense that ranks second worst in the N.L. in runs scored (275) and third from the bottom in OPS (.699).

The Phillies will likely be happy to get four or five innings out of Leiter before handing the ball over to the bullpen. That's more good news for the Diamondbacks as the Phils' pen ranks near the bottom of the National League with an ERA of 4.90.

The Diamondbacks swept the Phillies last week in Philadelphia and anything other than a four-game sweep at home this weekend would be considered a bit of a surprise. Feel comfortable laying the extra run tonight.

        *Pick: D-Backs -1.5 (-105)*

        Yesterday's Picks: 0-2
        Season To Date: 72-58-7

        *Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking:* Alex Wood, Los Angeles Dodgers (7-0, 1.90 ERA, $354)

The Dodgers lead the majors in opponents batting average .289 and ERA 3.35 and of course the leader of the rotation is ‘The Claw’ Clayton Kershaw. But he isn’t doing things alone, 26-year-old Alex Wood has been dealing.

Wood is 5-0 with a 0.97 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP in his last six outings. The crown jewel of this stretch was his last start at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, where he dominated the Reds over eight innings allowing four hits and the only run coming on a two-out solo home run in the 8th inning.

Wood and the Dodgers are big chalk at -200 at home against the Colorado Rockies.
        *
Slumping:* Rick Porcello, Boston Red Sox (3-9, 5.05, $-561)

In what is starting to become a weekly appearance in the Line Drive, Rick Porcello continues to stink. The defending American League Cy Young Award winner is currently sitting at 242 out of 251 on our Covers Starting Pitcher Money Board.

Even by 2017 standards Porcello’s last three starts have been particularly rough. He is 0-2 with a gross 8.35 ERA, 1.75 WHIP, opponents batting average of .372. In a very weak defense of the Red Sox righty, in two of those starts his lineup scored a combined one run.

Porcello and the Red Sox are -170 home chalk against the Los Angeles Angels.

        *Friday's Top Trends*

        * The Baltimore Orioles have allowed five or more runs in 19 consecutive games. Orioles/Rays Total: 8.5.
        * The Cincinnati Reds are 1-11 in their last 12 overall. +225 today @ Nationals.
        * The Cleveland Indians are 14-3 in their last 17 meetings with the Minnesota Twins. CLE -180 today at home.
        * Over is 12-1 in the Los Angeles Dodgers' last 13 overall. Rockies/Dodgers Total: 8.

*Weather To Keep An Eye On*

There is a chance of thunderstorms in the Big Apple tonight where the Rangers and Yankees are scheduled to play. The forecast is looking bleak and don’t be surprised if this game doesn’t happen. There is also a chance of thunderstorms developing and 50-55 percent chance of rain at first pitch at Progressive Field where the Indians host the Twins.

*Hitter’s winds could be a factor in a few ballparks today:*

        * Reds at Nationals (Total: 9): 15-18 MPH wind blowing out to right-center field.
        * Rangers at Yankees (Total: 9) 10 MPH wind blowing out to left-center field.
        * Angeles at Red Sox (Total: 10.5) 16 MPH wind blowing out to left-center field.
        * Athletics at White Sox (Total: 10) 12 MPH wind blowing out to center.
        * Mets at Giants (Total: 8.5) 14 MPH wind blowing out to left-center field.

        *Ump Of The Day*

Tom Hallion gets the pads today at Marlins Park where the Marlins are hosting the Cubs. Hallion has been one of baseball’s top OVER umpires this season with the over cashing 12 of his 15 (80 percent) appearances calling balls and strikes. When the total is nine or higher the OVER has paid out six of seven times.

Another trend for bettors to look out for with Hallion his lack of affection for the defending World Series champions. The Cubs have won only one of the last seven games with Hallion behind the dish.

          June 23, 2017

          Friday MLB Betting Preview
          Colorado vs. L.A Dodgers

          Sportsbook.ag Odds: Colorado (+195), L.A (-230), Total set at 8

Fading the Dodgers last night didn't work out too well as L.A continued to hit HR's and beat up on the Mets. That makes it seven wins in a row and 13 of their 14 for the Dodgers as they've started to exert their dominance and try to take control of the NL West. They should get a much stiffer test from one of those teams chasing them in that division race as the Colorado Rockies come to town.

The Rockies are licking their own wounds after getting demolished by Arizona the past few days and it's tough for many to believe that any team can step in front of this Dodgers freight train that is just steamrolling opponent after opponent. As -230 favorites tonight, oddsmakers have definitely put a premium price tag on the Dodgers, but is there a better bet out there on this game?

Odds per - Sportsbook.ag Best Bet: Colorado ML (+195)

Admittedly, stepping in front of this Dodgers train right now isn't exactly thrilling, but I'm not sure how you can ignore taking a shot at these inflated odds. Taking the Mets last night didn't work out, but Colorado is a much better team than New York, and while they haven't shown it the past few days, Colorado will be ready to play tonight.

In fact, it's not hard to argue that despite their series with Arizona being a big one as well, the Rockies had one eye already looking towards this weekend set in L.A and got caught looking ahead. I've always said that when teams do get caught looking ahead, when that game/opponent finally arrives, you'll want to back that side more often than not.

Throw in the nearly 2-1 price on the Rockies and it's tough to ignore this play from a pure value standpoint alone.

Obviously there is no value on a losing selection, but lefty Alex Wood isn't likely to dominate the Rockies like he did in Colorado back in the middle of May. Wood struck out 10 in six innings of work en route to a 4-0 Dodgers victory, and the last time he shut down Rockies hitters in a game, he was absolutely lit up in the following meeting.

Even if the Dodgers bats stay hot and continuing to deposit baseballs into the bleachers, if there is one NL team that can match L.A stroke for stroke it would be this Rockies squad.

Finally, we can't forget about the fact that Colorado is the best NL team (4th overall) against left-handed pitching this year in terms of average, and both Nolan Arenado and Ian Desmond have two career HR's vs. Wood.

Those two bats are the heart of the Rockies order more often than not these days and if the guys ahead of them like Charlie Blackmon and DJ LeMahieu – who both have solid career numbers vs. Wood as well – can get on base, then the Rockies should have a chance to come out on top late.

With big underdogs like this all you really want is a chance to win the game late and even with how hot the Dodgers have been, if Colorado plays their brand of baseball, they'll have a great shot to come out on top.

          • Weekend Outlook
            June 23, 2017

            Cincinnati (30-41) at Washington (43-29)
Scheduled rotation: Castillo (0-0) vs. Strasburg (8-2), Bailey (0-0) vs. Ross (3-3), Feldman (5-5) vs. Roark (6-4)
Series price: Nationals -320, Reds +260

The Reds have lost 11 of their last 12, but they get some good news as pitcher Homer Bailey will make his first start of the season on Saturday. This is the first meeting between these clubs this season. Last season the Nationals won the series 4-3 with six of the games going 'over' the total. The total might be the angle to attack here rather than laying inflated lines with Washington or sweating a bet on the Reds to win. The Reds have gone 7-1-1 to the 'over' in their last nine road games and are 42-25-4 to the 'over' this season. Washington has gone 'over' in eight of its last 10 games.

            Minnesota (36-34) at Cleveland (39-32)
Scheduled rotation: Mejia (1-3) vs. Bauer (6-5), Gibson (4-5) vs. Kluber (6-2), Santana (9-4) vs. Tomlin (4-8)
Series price: Indians -320, Twins +260

We're going to see the Royals get back into the American League Central mix, but right now this is it for division drama in June: Minnesota vs. Cleveland. The White Sox are dead and the last place Tigers are tanking. Last weekend it was the Twins in first-place and the Indians promptly swept the four-game series and took over the division lead. They're up 2.5 games and the Twins probably believe they can return the favor. The road is where Minnesota has been at its best this season, sporting a 20-9 record as a visitor. However, the Indians basically own the Twins. They've won eight of 10 this season, including the past five meetings, and they've won 14 of 17 dating back to last season. Nine of the past 12 meetings have stayed 'under' the total in this series.

Pittsburgh (33-40) at St. Louis (33-38)
Scheduled rotation: Taillon (3-2) vs. Wainwright (7-5), Cole (5-6) vs. Lynn (5-4), Kuhl (2-6) vs. Leake (5-6)
Series price: Cardinals -155, Pirates +135

This is only the fourth encounter of the season between these two and the first three meetings in St. Louis were identical 2-1 scores won by the Cardinals. The Cards have now won six straight against the Bucs -- all at Busch Stadium. The trend that stands out is St. Louis going 'over' the total in seven of its last nine games to make them 39-30-2 to the 'over' on the season. Neither of these teams are doing anything inspiring and neither look capable of making a serious playoff run. But for this series, the Cards have the better starters going and should continue their mastery of Pittsburgh and win the series.

            Philadelphia (23-48) at Arizona (46-27)
Scheduled rotation: Leiter (0-0) vs. Corbin (6-6), Lively (1-1) vs. Ray (7-3), Hellickson (5-5) vs. Greinke (8-4), Pivetta (1-3) vs. Walker (6-3)
Series price: Diamondbacks -350, Phillies +290

Arizona has won 12 of its last 14 games and are 25-9 in the last 34. Even though they have the second-best record in the National League, they're 1.5-games behind the equally hot Dodgers in the National League West. The D'Backs starting rotation has the lowest ERA in the N.L. and its hitters have the second-best OPS at .788. Arizona went into Philly last week and completed a three-game sweep in a tougher than expected series. The Snakes will toss the kitchen sink at the Phillies for this four-game series with all of their top starters taking the hill. The Phillies have lost 13 of their last 15.

            Houston (50-24) at Seattle (38-37)
Scheduled rotation: Musgrove (4-6) vs. Hernandez (2-2), McCullers (6-1) vs. Gaviglio (3-1), Peacock (4-1) vs. Miranda (6-3)
Series price: Astros -135, Mariners +115

The Mariners have won five straight and are one game above .500, which puts them in second place of the AL West. Unfortunately, the clubs is 12.5 games behind the Astros but they get a boost Friday night with Felix Hernandez making his first start since April. After a mini-slump, the first-place Astros just completed a four-game sweep at Oakland to push their MLB-best road record to 27-8 this season. Going back to 2016, the Astros are on an incredible 41-16 run in their last 57 road games. Houston has won five of the seven meetings this season, including beating Hernandez on opening day. Without James Paxton starting for Seattle in this series, Houston at -135 to win two of three on the road seems cheap in this spot.

Colorado (47-28) at LA Dodgers (48-26)
Scheduled rotation: Freeland (8-4) vs. Wood (7-0), Chatwood (6-7) vs. Kershaw (10-2), Marquez (5-3) vs. McCarthy (6-3)
Series price: Dodgers -330, Rockies +270

Okay, so the Dodgers might never lose a game again. They've won seven straight and 13 of their last 14 to finally take first-place away from Colorado in the NL West. The Rockies can take it back this weekend, but it's sure going to be tough. Friday will be a tough win just because the Dodgers always win on Friday, or at least their past eight Friday's they've won. Saturday, Clayton Kershaw is on the mound and they've won nine straight behind him to make him the most profitable pitcher in baseball at +8.8 units. The Rockies come off a tough series at home where the Diamondbacks took the final two games by a combined score of 26-8. These two squads have met nine times this season with Colorado winning five of them. The 'under' has connected in 18 of the past 25 meetings, but the Dodger bats will test that as they've gone 'over' in 12 of their last 13.

            • Tigers release reliever Rodriguez
              June 23, 2017

Francisco Rodriguez lost his job as closer last month. On Friday, the veteran right-hander simply lost his job.

The Detroit Tigers released Rodriguez one day after the 35-year-old served up a grand slam to Robinson Cano during Thursday's 9-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

Rodriguez was just 2-5 with a 7.82 ERA in 28 appearances this season. He served up nine homers in 25 1/3 innings and blew six save opportunities and converted seven.

The six-time All-Star ranks fourth in baseball history with 437 career saves but was hit hard this season. He was unhappy to be removed as closer and publicly criticized manager Brad Ausmus' communication style last week.

"To be honest, no one talked to me," Rodriguez told the Detroit News. "No one tells me anything. They never ask my opinion. They never ask me if I am ready to do that or not. It was their decision. Nobody asks me anything."

The Tigers have dropped a season-worst six straight games to fall into last place in the American League Central.

Detroit recalled right-hander Bruce Rondon from Triple-A Toledo to fill the bullpen opening.

The Tigers also placed outfielder Alex Presley on the seven-day concussion list and recalled outfielder Matt den Dekker from Toledo.

Red Sox claim Fister, will start Sunday
              June 23, 2017

BOSTON (AP) The Red Sox have claimed right hander Doug Fister off waivers in a move to provide depth to a rotation that has struggled with injuries.

President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced the move Friday. Manager John Farrell said Fister is slated to make his first start in Sunday's series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. Boston is hoping he can provide help with starters Steven Wright out for the season after left knee surgery and Eduardo Rodriguez rehabilitating a right knee injury.

Fister, 33, was released from his minor league contract with the Angels at his request on Thursday. He was pitching with their Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake City, but had a clause in his deal to opt out if he wasn't added to the major league roster by June 21.

He spent the 2016 season with the Astros, going 12-13 with a 4.64 ERA.

              • Twins add Gee, Hildenberger to staff
                June 23, 2017

CLEVELAND (AP) The Minnesota Twins have added two reinforcements for their depleted pitching staff, right-handers Dillon Gee and Trevor Hildenberger.

The Twins selected their contracts on Friday from Triple-A Rochester before playing at Cleveland. Left-hander Mason Melotakis and right-hander Alex Wimmers were designated for assignment.

The 31-year-old Gee was signed to a minor league contract this week after Texas released him. He'll likely join the rotation, with rookie Nik Turley the latest starter sent back to Triple-A on Thursday. The Twins have no off days until the All-Star break and a doubleheader at Kansas City on July 1.

Gee worked out of both the bullpen and the rotation last season for the Royals, posting a 4.68 ERA in 125 innings. He made 110 starts with a 4.03 ERA over six years with the New York Mets, including a career-best 2013 season with 12 wins and a 3.62 ERA over 199 innings.

The 26-year-old Hildenberger is a sidearmer with six saves with a 2.05 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings for Rochester.

Wimmers, the team's first-round draft pick in 2010, has a 4.38 ERA over 22 appearances for the Twins while going up and down to the minors the last two seasons. He's 28.

Melotakis is a bigger risk to expose to waivers. He has 32 strikeouts with a 2.28 ERA in 27 2/3 innings this year between Double-A and Triple-A. The 2012 second-round draft pick turns 26 next week.

                • Young cut by Royals, who sign Feliz
                  June 23, 2017

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Chris Young, Kansas City's winning pitcher in the 2015 World Series opener, had been designated for assignment.

Reliever Neftali Feliz agreed to a one-year contract with the Royals on Friday, four days after he was released by Milwaukee.

Young had a 7.50 ERA in two starts and 12 relief appearances allowing 47 hits, including seven home runs and 18 walks in 30 innings. He went 3-9 with a 6.19 ERA last year.

The 38-year-old right-hander was 1-0 with a 2.87 ERA in four games in the 2015 postseason, including three scoreless innings in the opener against the New York Mets. He is guaranteed a $5.75 million salary this year as part of an $11.5 million, two-year contract.

Feliz had eight saves in nine chances for the Brewers before losing the closer's job and went 1-5 with a 6.00 ERA in 29 appearances. The 29-year-old was the 2010 AL Rookie of the Year with Texas and is 20-19 with 107 saves and a 3.43 ERA in 337 major league appearances.

He was guaranteed $5.35 million in his deal with the Brewers, and the Royals will pay $292,350 - a prorated share of the $535,000 minimum - with Milwaukee responsible for the rest.

NEW YORK (AP) Ronald Torreyes hit a game-winning single with two outs in the 10th inning after midnight, and the New York Yankees edged the Texas Rangers 2-1 on a rainy Friday night for just their second win in 10 games.

Brett Gardner lined a tying home run with one out in the New York ninth off closer Matt Bush. After Chasen Shreve (2-1) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 10th, Torreyes kept the Yankees atop the AL East.

Yu Darvish and Masahiro Tanaka kept it scoreless into the late innings in the first major league meeting between the Japanese stars.

Gary Sanchez, whose passed ball gave Texas a 1-0 lead in the ninth, singled with one out in the 10th off Bush (2-3). A single by Didi Gregorius put runners at the corners and after Chris Carter struck out, Torreyes lined a single to center field.

                    MARLINS 2, CUBS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton hit his 19th home run, Jose Urena scattered five hits over six innings and Miami topped defending champion Chicago.

Christian Yelich added a sacrifice fly for the Marlins, who won for the second time this week with no more than three hits. Stanton had two hits and Dee Gordon the other for Miami, which got only two hits in a 2-1 win over Washington on Wednesday.

Urena (6-2) won his fifth straight decision. A.J. Ramos pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances.

Javier Baez and Ian Happ each had two hits for the Cubs. John Lackey (5-8) gave up just three hits and two runs - one earned - in six innings, yet still fell to 1-5 in his last seven starts.

                    RED SOX 9, ANGELS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Hanley Ramirez and Sandy Leon hit two-run homers and the Red Sox won on a night they retired David Ortiz's number.

It was the 250th career home run for Ramirez, a good friend of Ortiz who was also born in the Dominican Republic. Leon finished with three hits and four RBIs.

The homers helped provide a nice cushion for Rick Porcello (4-9), who gave up four runs and struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings to earn the victory. It was the 13th straight start Porcello has gone at least six innings.

Alex Meyer (3-4) allowed five runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Los Angeles scored three runs in the seventh, but cooled off after Porcello exited.

                    RAYS 15, ORIOLES 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Evan Longoria and Shane Peterson drove in four runs apiece to back the pitching of Chris Archer and lead surging Tampa Bay past Baltimore.

Peterson and Derek Norris hit two-run homers off Ubaldo Jimenez (2-3) as Orioles pitchers allowed at least five runs for the 20th consecutive game, tying a major league record set by the 1924 Philadelphia Phillies.

Longoria had a two-run single during Tampa Bay's four-run first inning, and Peterson and Norris both went deep in the third to chase Jimenez, who yielded nine runs, seven hits and four walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Logan Morrison also had a big night for the Rays, hitting his 22nd homer and finishing with three RBIs.

Archer (6-4) wasn't especially sharp. But the right-hander didn't have to be with the Rays posting a season-high for runs.

                    TWINS 5, INDIANS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Adalberto Mejia combined with three relievers on a four-hitter, leading Minnesotain a matchup of the top two teams in the AL Central.

Mejia (2-3) held Cleveland to two hits in five innings, but had to work around five walks and two errors. The left-hander got out of bases-loaded jams in the second and fourth and stranded nine Indians runners on base.

Cleveland was coming off a 7-1 road trip, including a four-game sweep at Target Field last weekend that gave the Indians first place in the division. The Twins are now 1 1/2 back.

Tyler Duffey, Taylor Rogers and Trevor Hildenberger combined to pitch the final four innings.

Jorge Polanco's two-run homer highlighted Minnesota's four-run second off Trevor Bauer (6-6) and gave the Twins only their third win in 11 games against the Indians this season. Brian Dozier was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

                    NATIONALS 6, REDS 5, 10 INNINGS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bryce Harper singled in the winning run in the 10th inning, Brian Goodwin homered twice and Washington got a solid performance from its bullpen.

Anthony Rendon and Daniel Murphy also homered for the Nationals, who trailed 5-2 in the sixth before coming back to deal the Reds their 12th loss in 13 games.

Trea Turner singled off Raisel Iglesias (2-2) with one out in the 10th and took third on a single by Goodwin before Harper hit a liner that struck the right-field wall on one bounce.

Matt Albers (3-1) pitched the 10th to cap an impressive night for the Nationals' bullpen, a maligned group that blanked the Reds on one hit over the final five innings.

                    ATHLETICS 3, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Khris Davis and Matt Joyce homered, Jharel Cotton pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning before leaving with a blister on his right thumb and Oakland beat Chicago.

Davis hit a two-run homer in the first. Joyce connected leading off the fifth against Mike Pelfrey (3-6) and the Athletics picked up the win coming off four-game sweep by Houston.

Cotton (5-7) and four relievers combined on Oakland's second shutout of the season.

Cotton gave up a leadoff single to Kevan Smith and left after he came up shaking his hand following the first pitch to Adam Engel.

Liam Hendriks, Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle each worked a scoreless inning before Santiago Casilla ran into trouble in the ninth. He allowed singles to Melky Cabrera and Jose Abreu before getting out of the jam, picking up his 12th save.

                    BRAVES 5, BREWERS 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Mike Foltynewicz won his fourth straight decision at home, shortstop Dansby Swanson made a pair of outstanding defensive plays in the ninth inning and Atlanta won for the sixth time in seven games.

Foltynewicz (5-5) gave up one run, four hits and three walks in five innings with nine strikeouts, improving to 4-0 with a 2.17 ERA in his last five starts at SunTrust Park.

Brandon Phillips homered and drove in two runs, and Arodys Vizcaino earned his first save since last June 26.

Eric Thames doubled leading off the ninth, and Domingo Santana hit a two-hopper to the second-base side of Swanson, who spun and threw out Thames at third. Travis Shaw flied out to the left-field warning track as Santana advanced, and Manny Pina lined out to Swanson, who made a diving backhand catch in the shortstop hole, for the final out.

                    PIRATES 4, CARDINALS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Josh Bell and John Jaso homered as Pittsburgh snapped a seven-game skid in Busch Stadium.

Jaso, who entered as part of a double switch in the eighth inning, drove a 3-2 pitch from Seung Hwan Oh (1-4) over the wall in right-center to break a 3-3 tie in the ninth.

Jameson Taillon threw 104 pitches in six innings, both highs since coming back from testicular cancer surgery on June 12. Only one of the four hits the Pirates righty allowed left the infield.

Felipe Rivero (3-1) pitched the Pirates out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth. Rivero worked around a ninth inning walk to secure the win.

                    ROYALS 5, BLUE JAYS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Whit Merrifield hit a two-run, two-out double that capped a four-run rally in the ninth inning, and Kansas City reached .500 for the first time since April.

With their 10th win in 12 games, the Royals improved to 36-36. They were 6-6 before play on April 20, then went on a nine-game losing streak that night and dropped as low as 10-20, seven games out of first place. They trail AL Central-leading Cleveland by three games.

Toronto took a 2-1 lead into the ninth and extended it when Josh Donaldson and Justin Smoak hit RBI singles off Joakim Soria (4-2).

Salvador Perez doubled with one out in the bottom half against Ryan Tepera, took third on a wild pitch, and Brandon Moss walked with two outs.

Alcides Escobar greeted Aaron Loup (2-1) with an RBI single, and Alex Gordon hit a run-scoring single on the first pitch from Jason Grilli. Ahead 3-1 in the count, Merrifield doubled on a hop to the left-field wall, and Gordon scored easily from first, crossing the plate with a headfirst slide.

                    PHILLIES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Mark Leiter Jr. held the Arizona Diamondbacks to three hits over six scoreless innings, and Maikel Franco and Tommy Joseph both homered to lead Philadelphia.

Leiter (1-0) struck out five with a walk for his first major league win in his first major league start after 12 relief appearances. He bested Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin (6-7), who held the Phillies to a run and eight hits for 6 2/3 innings.

Philadelphia won its second straight after five straight losses, three from being swept in a series with Arizona at home last week.

The Diamondbacks had scored 26 runs in their previous two games, both wins, and had won nine of their previous 10 games before Friday. They didn't score until Daniel Descalso's one-out triple drove in Rey Fuentes from first base in the eighth inning

                      — Golden State paid the Bulls $3.5M for the pick they grabbed Jordan Bell with.

                      — Chris Paul, Blake Griffin both opted out of their contracts, are free agents.

                      — Toronto Blue Jays are 0-9 this season when trying to get back to .500.

                      — Orioles have allowed 5+ runs in 20 consecutive games, first team to do that since 1924.

                      — Louisville’s Donovan Mitchell Jr was drafted #15 Thursday; his dad works in the Mets’ community relations office, so good for them.

                      — RIP coach Frank Kush, who won 176 football games at Arizona State and is a main reason why ASU is now in the Pac-12. He also coached the Colts for three years.

                      *************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

                      13) Can you imagine being a high school/college pitcher, being really excited about the draft, and then being picked by the Colorado Rockies? Can’t be a good feeling- Coors Field is the worst pitchers’ park in the major leagues, thanks to the high altitude.

                      12) Must be fun recruiting for teams at Fresno State these days, with alums Derek Carr, Aaron Judge and Paul George in the news so much, all for very good reasons.

                      11) Miami Marlins batters swung at 71 of Max Scherzer’s pitches Wednesday; they missed 30 of them and got only two hits. Scherzer threw 118/121 pitches in his last two starts; you wonder if they’ll give him an extra day of rest, or make sure he is held under 100 pitches in his next start.

Don’t want your meal ticket getting burned out in June, especially when you have such a big lead in your division.

                      10) Mets’ TV guy Keith Hernandez was exasperated watching the Dodgers pummel the Mets this week; late Wednesday night, with LA way ahead of another game, Mets’ skipper Terry Collins was writing down some notes on a card.

“What could he possibly be writing on that piece of paper?” Hernandez said.

                      9) Dodgers are 21-4 when they hit 2+ homers in a game, 4-16 when they don’t hit any homers, 23-6 when they hit one.

                      8) San Antonio is moving up from AA to AAA baseball next year; they’re going to get a new ballpark at some point. Sounds like Colorado Springs is out as a AAA city- hard to have your young pitchers throwing in high altitude, without losing their confidence.

Amarillo is expected to take San Antonio’s place in the AA Texas League.

                      7) NBA’s projected salary cap will come in at $99 million, $5M higher than last year, but about $2 million less than estimates in April. The crummy playoff season, with so many fewer games than there could’ve been, was blamed for the decrease.

The luxury tax was lowered from $121 million to a projection of $119 million.

                      6) When the Colorado Rockies had their expansion draft in 1992, two of the guys they picked are now major league managers— Joe Girardi and Brad Ausmus.

                      5) Minnesota Twins/Cleveland Indians will play two regular season games in Puerto Rico next season.

                      4) Kansas City Chiefs gave coach Andy Reid a contract extension, then surprisingly fired GM John Dorsey, who had been with the Chiefs for four years.

                      3) Remember a few years ago, when a guy named Frank McCourt owned the Dodgers and got into a nasty divorce dispute involving the ball club with his future ex-wife? Well, that ex-wife is now going to be the US ambassador to Belgium. Hope she can get the baseball package on TV over there.

                      2) IUPUI was invited to replace Valparaiso in the Horizon League. Valpo replaced Wichita State in the MVC, after the Shockers jumped to the AAC.

                      1) Woman named Nina Skye was recently fired from her teaching job at a religiously-affiliated preschool in Los Angeles; the reason?

Turns out Christian preschools aren’t fond of their teachers being porn stars.

                      Whoops.

                        • LEADING OFF: Kershaw goes for 11th win; Bailey's back
                          June 23, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                          KERSHAW GOES FOR 11TH WIN

Clayton Kershaw seeks to become the major leagues' first 11-game winner when the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Colorado Rockies. Kershaw (10-2) is 6-0 in his last nine starts, winning three in a row. He has struck out 115 and walked 17 in 103 1/3 innings and is 20-6 against Colorado, including 2-1 this year.

                          HOMER'S BACK

Homer Bailey returns from elbow surgery to make his season debut when the Cincinnati Reds face the Washington Nationals. Bailey will be activated from the 60-day disabled list, where he's languished since the first day of spring training after having bone chips removed from his elbow in February. The right-hander last pitched on Aug. 28, an abbreviated one-inning stint at Arizona. Joe Ross (3-3, 5.98 ERA) will start for the NL East-leading Nationals.

                          NIFTY START

Rays right-hander Jake Faria (3-0, 1.37 ERA) makes his fourth big league start, seeking to join Jeremy Hellickson as the only pitchers in Tampa Bay history to launch their careers with four consecutive outings of at least six innings. According to Baseball Reference, Faria is the fifth pitcher since 1913 to go at least six innings, allow one or no runs and get the win in his first three major league starts. The rookie won his debut at Tropicana Field against the Chicago White Sox on June 7, then beat Toronto and Detroit on the road in his next two starts. On Saturday he faces the Baltimore Orioles, whose pitching staff has allowed at least five runs in 20 straight games, tying a major league record set by the 1924 Philadelphia Phillies.

                          McCULLERS RETURNS

Houston's depleted rotation is about to get one of its big arms back with the return of Lance McCullers after missing two weeks with discomfort in his lower back. McCullers is scheduled to start on Saturday night against Seattle. He last pitched on June 8 against Kansas City, allowing one run and two hits in seven innings. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list a day later and has missed two turns in the rotation. Houston manager A.J. Hinch said there won't be a pitch count for McCullers but the team will be conservative. McCullers is 6-1 with a 2.58 ERA and was the AL pitcher of the month in May, going 4-0 with a 0.99 ERA in six starts.
