  • Nine MLB things you may have missed while betting playoff basketball

We commence our inaugural 2017 Major League Baseball column with the following tidbit about the Houston Astros, the club that currently boasts the highest winning percentage in all the sport (45-22, .672): Of Houston’s 45 MLB victories so far this season, 37 (82.3 percent) have come by two or more runs.

For baseball bettors, this is an important nugget to consider because more often than not, the price that accompanies the backing of one of the best teams in the sport is just too high to justify the risk. Case in point: Take Tuesday’s Texas-Houston showdown in which Astros righty Brad Peacock closed at the heavy price of -190 before eventually falling 4-2 at home to the Rangers. Had you laid the -1.5 run line with the Astros, at least you wouldn’t have lost $190 for every $100 you attempted to win.

The run line can serve as a very powerful wagering option in the baseball gambler’s arsenal for those intrigued by the concept of backing favorites. The benefit, of course, is the limiting of risk, while the detriment comes in the form of having to win by two or more runs. This type of proposition is not for the faint of heart as it pertains to clubs like the Washington Nationals who, despite a healthy .600 winning percentage entering Thursday’s slate of games, ranks eighth in MLB in blown saves, with 11.

On the flip side, note that American League MVP favorite Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees have seen each of their last ten victories come by two or more runs.

The Major League Baseball run line: Learn it, study it, embrace it.

For those of you who are just now making the transition from NBA wagering to MLB wagering, here are nine factoids to file away as you attempt to grind out a profit during the summer months:

    1. It’s no surprise whatsoever to see names like Clayton Kershaw (9-2) and Dallas Keuchel (9-0) atop the Major League Baseball wins column on June 15. But what is surprising is the fact that those aforementioned Cy Young winners are joined by 34-year-old Jason Vargas (9-3) of the dismal 30-34 Kansas City Royals. In his 12 decisions this season, Vargas has closed at an average price of +112 with only two of his nine victories coming as a favorite. Without a shadow of a doubt, Jason Vargas has been one of the best value bets in baseball so far this season.

    2. When it comes to betting overs, keep a very close eye on the Mets (37-19-8, .660), Marlins (37-23-4, .616) and Reds (37-24-4, .606), who have all returned substantial profits for their backers in 2017.

    3. As it pertains to betting Unders, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the Cleveland Indians (35-25-3, .583). Outside of the Tribe, none of the other 29 clubs have produced a highly favorable under record as of June 15.

    4. What a difference a year makes: In San Francisco, Johnny Cueto turned an 18-5 campaign last year into a 5-6 record through the first 2.5 months of the 2017 season compliments of a 4.57 ERA, Cueto’s worst mark since his rookie season in 2008. Meanwhile, teammate Jeff Samardzija, who went 12-11 in 2016, currently leads all of Major League Baseball with 8 losses (2-8, 4.31 ERA). And how about 2016 American League Cy Young winner Rick Porcello, who went 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA last season? Funny you should ask because the 28-year-old is currently 3-8 with a 4.67 ERA so far in 2017. Three respectable pitchers in 2016 who have become three fade options less than one full year later.

    5. Umpire alert: Home teams are 10-0 when Chad Whitson is behind the dish, 10-3 when Gerry Davis is calling balls and strikes, 10-4 when the honors go to Phil Cuzzi and 9-2 when its Paul Nauert.

    6. Umpire alert part II: As it pertains to high scoring totals, 11.73 runs per game have been scored in Manny Gonzalez’s 11 games behind the plate this season (highest in MLB), while 11.58 runs per game have been scored in Sam Holbrook’s 12 contests behind the dish. On the flip side, just 6.77 runs per game are being averaged when Gerry Davis gets the call (13 games) and only 6.80 runs per game when the honors belong to Will Little (10 games).

    7. MLB futures: With an MLB-best +114 run differential, give me the New York Yankees at 7/1 and the Houston Astros (+102, second in MLB) at 9/2 to win the World Series this season. With an NL-best run differential of +87, I’ll take the Los Angeles Dodgers at 5/1 to win the Series as well. Granted, I’m not exactly thinking outside the box here, but I feel as if I can get ahead of the market at these prices due to the fact that all three of those aforementioned clubs should be very active come the July trade deadline.

    8. Of the Philadelphia Phillies’ last 22 losses, 17 have come by two or more runs. Remember what we said earlier about the MLB run line? Well, the Phillies currently rank 29th in MLB in run differential (-85).

    9. Speaking of horrific run differentials, the San Diego Padres (-113, worst in MLB) haven’t lost a game by one run since May 13 against the Chicago White Sox (5-4 in Chicago). For those scoring at home, that means each of San Diego’s last 16 defeats have come by two or more runs.

        • Saturday's Diamond Notes
          June 17, 2017

Hottest team: Royals (6-0 past six games)

The Royals picked up their sixth consecutive victory in Friday's series opener against the Halos, as Ian Kennedy was perfect into the sixth inning en route to his first win of the season. He was the last American League starter with at least 10 starts to pick up his first win. The Royals have posted six straight road wins, five in a row against a right-handed starter and they're 6-0 in their past six games on grass while going 4-1 in their past five against American League West foes. The Angels, on the other hand, are just 3-8 in their past 11 against teams with a losing record and 0-4 over Alex Meyer's past four outings.

Coldest team Reds (0-7 past seven games)

The Reds have suffered seven setbacks in a row, and they'll look to avoid their eighth consecutive loss against Hyun-Jin Ryu and the Dodgers on Saturday at Great American Ball Park. They're facing a golden opportunity to end the skid with Ryu on the hill, as the Dodgers are 0-7 over his past seven road outings and 3-10 over his past 13 overall. Unfortunately for the Reds, they're just 2-6 in their past eight home games against a left-handed starters, 19-46 in their past 65 overall vs. LHP and a dismal 1-12 over their past 13 games against National League West Division opponents.

Hottest pitcher: Chase Anderson, Brewers (5-2, 2.83 ERA)

Anderson will square off against rookie Dinelson Lamet and the Padres in Saturday's home game. He has the best ERA among all probable pitchers on the schedule. The Padres have a rather toothless offense, ranking third in the majors with 631 strikeouts while ranking 29th in the league with a .681 OPS. They also rank dead-last with just 248 runs scored, 10 fewer than any other team in the league. Milwaukee is an impressive 5-2 over Anderson's past seven starts at home against a team with a losing record, while the Padres have dropped six of their past eight against a right-handed starter. They're also 0-4 in their past four road games agaisnt a team with a winning overall mark.

Coldest pitcher: Yovani Gallardo, Mariners (3-6, 6.11 ERA)

The Mariners have had plenty of surprising pitching performances from unlikely sources lately. Gallardo isn't one of them. He enters 1-3 with a 9.00 ERA over his past five outings across 25.0 innings. The M's have won just two of their past seven games overall, while the Rangers have won six of their past seven outings. It's a difficult matchup for Gallardo, as the Rangers rank 13th in the majors with 318 runs scored while swatting 88 homers. The Rangers are also 4-1 in their past five home outings against the M's with left-handed Martin Perez on the bump, while Seattle has dropped seven in a row in Arlington.

Biggest UNDER run: Rangers (6-2 past eight games)

The 'over' has hit in the past two for Texas after a six-game run, but the under is still the play for Texas. Or is it? The over has cashed in four straight meetings in Arlington, 5-0 in Perez's past five home starts against the Mariners and 10-2 in Perez's past 12 starts vs. the M's. The over has also cashed in 20 of the past 28 meetings in this series. However, the 'under' is 6-2-1 in Perez's past nine home starts and 6-2 in his past eight starts inside the division. The under is also 7-2 in Seattle's past nine road games.

Biggest OVER run: Royals (8-2 past 10 games overall)

The Royals have rolled to six consecutive victories, and a good reason is because their offense has come alive. Kansas City is averaging 7.5 runs per game over the six-game run while holding the opposition to 1.8 runs per game over the past five outings. With a matchup of Jake Junis and Alex Meyer, the 'over' looks like a pretty solid play. The over is 12-2 in Kansas City's past 14 against teams with a losing record, 6-1 in their past seven vs. RHP on the road and 38-18-2 in their past 58 road games against a team with a losing overall record. The over is also 5-1 in Meyer's past six against a team with a losing overall mark.

Matchup to watch: Pirates vs. Cubs

The defending champion Cubs have won just two of their past 12 games on the road while going 2-8 over their past 10 road outings against a right-handed starting pitcher. However, if anyone is going to break their skid it is Jake Arrieta. The Cubbies are 19-7 over Arrieta's past 26 starts against a team with a losing record and 11-4 over his past 15 starts against the Bucs, including 6-2 over his past eight assignments at PNC Park. The 'over' has also cashed in four consecutive games by Arrieta against the Pirates, while going 20-7-1 in the past 28 meetings overall in Pittsburgh. The Pirates have really struggled, going 4-10 over their past 14 divisional games, and 2-5 in their past seven at home against a right-handed starter. They're also 0-4 in Ivan Nova's past four outings against NL Central foes.

Betcha didn’t know: The Indians closed the lead of the Twins to just one game with an 8-1 win at Target Field in the series opener on Friday. Cleveland has picked up seven wins over their past 10 road games against a team with a losing home record, and they're 4-1 in their past five vs. divisional foes. The Twins are just 2-7 in their past nine home games and 1-4 in their past five vs. RHP. Cleveland has won five consecutive games at Target Field, while going 11-3 in the past 14 meetings overall. Jose Ramirez has picked up eight hits over his past 13 at-bats with three RBI over the past three games, while Edwin Encarnacion has four homers over the past seven outings. Eddie Rosario has four homers over the past four games, and he has a .309 career average vs. the Indians.

Biggest public favorite: Blue Jays (-240) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Royals (+135) at Angels

Biggest line move: Reds (+160 to +130) vs. Dodgers

            • Weekend Outlook
              June 16, 2017

              Cleveland (32-31) at Minnesota (34-29)

Scheduled rotation: Carrasco (6-3) vs. Turley (0-0), Merritt (0-0) vs. Mejia (1-2), Clevinger (2-3) vs. Wilk (0-1), Bauer (5-5) vs. Gibson (4-4)
Series price: Indians -160, Twins +140

While I've been absolutely captivated by what's going on with three 41-win teams battling for the National West lead, the next division that has my attention is the American League Central where the Minnesota Twins continue to amaze by leading last year's division winner, the Cleveland Indians, by two games. We all expected this when the Twins started 4-0, right?

Station Casinos sports books have posted the Indians as minus-160 road favorites to win the four-game series which features a day/night double-header on Saturday. The Indians have won four of the six meetings so far this season, inlcuding a sweep at Target Field in April. Last season, it was the last-place Twins who played the Indians the toughest within the division going 9-10.

Everyone often refers back to last season when discussing the Indians because it's been such a sharp decline in 2017 with basically the same players. To make matters sound worse, they should be better by adding bopper Edwin Encarnacion, who started slow but has gotten hot lately.

Last season it was the month of June where the Indians put major separartion between them and the rest of the division by going 22-6, which included a 14-game winning streak. Nothing like that is happening this season with their longest win streak being five games sprinkled around four separate three-game losing streaks. They've held the division lead a few times this season, but haven't been in first place since June 1.

So the question is whether Minnesota really is this good or is Cleveland just not playing up to its high expectations? Perhaps its a little of both, but you have to be amazed with Minnesota sitting in first-place.

"We’d all be lying if we haven’t been scoreboard watching since we got off to a 4-0 start," said Minnesota catcher Chris Gimenez. He was on the Indians last season and has brought some of that cocky confidence required to win with him to Minnesota.

"I think, last year especially, Cleveland was kind of the bully on the block," Gimenez said. "We want to let people know that we’re ready to kind of take the bully on and punch him in the mouth. This is a good opportunity to do that."

The problem with the Twins is their 14-20 record at home. They've done all their damage on the road at 20-9. What looks crazier in the standings, other than Minnesota on top, is seeing a division leader in June with a minus-24 run (304-328) differential. To put into perspective, the Yankees are +113 and the Astros are +102.

What the Twins have done is just play within themselves. They never get too high. Their longest win streak has been four games and they've done it four times. Their longest losing skid has been four games and its happened only twice. They bring their lunch pails to work and play hard. Who doesn't like that kind of story?

One of the biggest issues with Cleveland this season has been its starting rotation, which ranks 24th with a 4.84 ERA. The good news for the Indians is knowing if they can get to the sixth inning with a lead, the best bullpen in baseball can close it out. They've converted 19 of 22 saves and have a 2.83 ERA.

Something to watch this weekend is how super-reliever Andrew Miller responds after the Dodgers treated him so rudely by handing him his only two losses on consecutive nights. The Dodgers also cracked the only two homers off him this season. Miller had allowed only one earned run in 27 appearances (Indians were 22-5 in his games), but he gave up five between his two outings which took his ERA from 0.29 up to 1.60. He hasn't pitched since then.

The Indians have been a terrible wager for bettors this season just because their starting rotation was way overrated when the season started making all their prices too high. The overall team rating was a few cents too high as was the home field edge. They've gone 15-17 at home. Overall, the Indians are -15.3 units. However, something they are the best at in wagering is staying 'under' the total 59 percent of the time at 36-25-2, which includes going 18-6-2 to the 'under' in their last 26 road games.

The Twins have a respectable +5.8 units of profit and their totals have gone 29-29-5. Last season Minnesota was by far the best 'over' team in baseball.

              Boston (37-29) at Houston (45-22)
Scheduled rotation: Pomeranz (6-4) vs. Fiers (4-2), Porcello (3-8) vs. Paulino (0-0), Price (1-1) vs. Musgrove (4-5)
Series price: Houston -125, Boston +115

Before Houston's win on Wednesday over Texas to avoid a sweep, the Astros had lost six of eight games. However, they still managed to have the best record in baseball with a few games to spare. The big key to their success has been getting great starting pitching -- No. 2 with a 3.56 ERA -- and also getting on top of opponents early. In the first game of all series this season the Astros are 16-5. And then they close it out strong going 13-6 in the third game. Boston comes in having won five of its last seven, but I'd be surprised if they win this series. The price looks cheap on Houston.

              Arizona (41-26) at Philadelphia (22-43)

Scheduled rotation: Corbin (5-6) vs. Nola (3-4), Godley (2-1) vs. Eickhoff (0-7), Ray (7-3) vs. Lively (1-1)
Series price: Diamondbacks -150, Phillies +135

Arizona keeps hanging in there with the Dodgers and Rockies and it has elevated its game even more as the pressure mounts. They've won seven of their last eight, including their last four. They've won 20 of their past 28. The main reason has been the starters, who statistically are the best collective unit in baseball. Yes, they have a lower unit ERA than the Dodgers who usually lead that category. They also have an amazing lineup that mashes which has helped seven of their last nine go 'over' the total. Arizona swept a four-game series at Philly last June and I look for the same to happen here. The Diamondbacks have gone 15-6 in the first game of a series this season. Laying -150 to win the series is about 30 cents cheap, even without Zack Greinke.

Chicago Cubs (32-33) at Pittsburgh (30-36)

Scheduled rotation: Butler (3-2) vs. Williams (3-3), Arrieta (6-4) vs. Nova (6-4), Lackey (4-7) vs. Taillon (3-1)
Series price: Cubs -150, Pirates +135

The World Champs may have the largest fan base across the nation, and each time they visit a city with a jam packed ballpark they haven't been showing a good product. How does 3-13 in their last 16 road games sound? How does -16.5 units sound? That's where the Cubs are while being just one-game under .500. The sports books in Las Vegas have done quite well on the Cubs failures so far and have kept the prices inflated because despite the losing, people are still betting them. "This is going to be the game they start a large win streak," is what some bettors keep telling themselves. The last time the Cubs visited PNC Park, they took two of three in late April. A few weeks before that, the Bucs swept three games at Wrigley Field. The Pirates are on a run of winning four of their last five overall.

              L.A. Dodgers (41-36) at Cincinnati (29-36)

Scheduled rotation: Wood (6-0) vs Adleman (4-2), Ryu (2-6) vs. Wojciechowski (1-0), Maeda (4-3) vs. Arroyo (3-5)
Series price: Dodgers -300, Reds +240

The Dodgers will be favored in all three games and they've gone 25-9 in their last 34 games as the favorite. They also won 53 of the previous 78 meetings with the Reds, including a three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium earlier this month where all three games went 'over' the total. Look for that trend again this weekend. The Reds are officially the worst starting rotation in baseball with its starters posting a 5.97 ERA which is way behind No. 29 Baltimore's at 5.43. The Dodgers are No. 3 with a 3.63 ERA

                • Sunday’s six-pack

                  — Jim Harbaugh has invited former President Obama to be an honorary captain at a Michigan home game this season. Coach Harbaugh knows how to generate publicity.

                  — Rookie 3B Matt Chapman, just called up, is a big defensive upgrade for the A’s.

                  — Milwaukee’s Eric Thames has homered in four consecutive games.

                  — First prize money at the US Open is $30,000 more than Arnold Palmer’s total Tour career prize money.

                  — Justin Thomas shot a 62 Saturday, holing one shot for an eagle from 299 yards. First-ever 62 at the US Open.

                  — Colorado Rockies are in first place; their payroll this year is $127,828,571, 16.7% of which goes to Jose Reyes, who plays for the Mets ($21,465,000).

                  **************************

                  Sunday’s List of 13: Happy Father’s Day!!!

                  13) Rumors are rampant that the Celtics/76ers will make a trade that will wind up with Philly having the #1 pick in Thursday’s draft, so they can select Washington PG Markelle Fultz.

Danny Ainge is stockpiling a ton of draft picks over the next few years; at some point, he has to cash them in, but truth is, if the Celtics don’t love one of this year’s prospects more than the others, it makes sense to trade the pick and acquire more assets for down the road.

                  12) Las Vegas Summer League runs July 7-17 from UNLV. Fun event to attend. ESPN and NBAtv are showing all the games for those of us who won’t be in the desert then. 24 NBA teams will be represented, but the Knicks aren’t sending a team this year, which is unusual.

It is odd, but I’m looking forward to watching these games, moreso than the non-competitive games we saw in the playoffs. Guys playing for their careers are more fun to watch.

                  11) Joe Maddon got tossed Friday night in Pittsburgh during the first batter of the game, after umpires called a long drive that Anthony Rizzo hit a foul ball. Would’ve been third game in a row where Rizzo homered leading off a game, in only his third game as a leadoff batter.

Cubs also had a runner forced at third from the outfield during that inning, but still scored three runs. Pirate TV announcers were calling it one of the strangest innings they’d ever seen.

                  10) 12,000 people showed up at City Hall in Los Angeles Thursday night when the city projected the Batman logo onto City Hall to honor the late Adam West.

                  9) Thursday night, Chad Pinder became only the 3rd player ever to play SS/RF in the same game for the Oakland A’s, joining Tony Phillips and Bill Almon, who did it six times.

Oakland won that game 8-7 in 10 innings, despite allowing a run in the last five innings- they blew four saves in the game. No bueno.

Eric Orns posted this on Twitter; only one MLB game EVER has gone extra innings, with both teams scoring in every half-inning from innings 6-9. Red Sox-Indians July 31, 1948. This game Thursday missed by one half-inning of becoming the second one.

                  8) Quote of the Day, part 2: ”I’m just not a fan of it. I don’t like it. I’m not a Home Run Derby guy. I’m not going to do it.” George Springer of the Astros

                  7) Brendan McKay was the #4 pick in the baseball draft, by Tampa Bay. He is going to try and be both a pitcher and a DH as he climbs the ladder in pro ball. Will be a fun experiment to follow— apparently Tampa Bay is going to let him try and do both.

                  6) Last year in the NFL, there were eight FG’s missed that were shorter than 30 yards; Seattle’s Steven Hauschka was the only kicker with two of them.

                  5) Pete Rose got a statue outside Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati this weekend; the statue depicts one of Rose’s trademark head-first slides. Too bad the powers-to-be don’t put Rose up for election for the Hall of Fame. Would be a HUGE weekend in Cooperstown.

                  4) Best wishes to Tigers’ DH Victor Martinez, who is on the DL after he had a rapid heartbeat, dizziness and cold sweats Thursday night— he was in the hospital for a while but is out now. He is not expected to travel with the team on its trip out west next week.

                  3) Bill Cosby’s trial resulted in a hung jury, so a mistrial was declared; prosecutors said they will re-try the case, so the whole thing will come down to selecting a more favorable jury, or maybe the prosecution calling other witnesses who’ve accused the 79-year old Cosby of bad deeds. This jury was made up of four white women, six white men, one black woman and one black man.

                  2) Underrated great defensive player: Orlando Arcia, shortstop for the Brewers. I watch lot of Milwaukee games; Arcia is one of those guys who make tough plays look simple.

William Shatner does a commercial for a law firm in Milwaukee that airs on Brewer games; I have no idea why/how they got a star like him to do a commercial on local TV. Good get.

                  1) Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there; please make sure you call you dad or give him a hug, thank him and tell him how much you love him.

                  • MLB notebook: Tigers' Martinez out of hospital, to miss road trip
                    June 17, 2017

Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez was released from the hospital Saturday but won't make the team's next road trip and it is clear he won't be back in action when his mandatory 10-day stint on the disabled list expires.

"They're going to monitor him for seven to 10 days," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He's not going on the road trip with us. He's staying here. The prognosis is he's probably going to need a week of rest before he does anything else."

Martinez had an irregular heartbeat during Thursday night's game with Tampa Bay and was removed for a pinch runner after reaching first on a run-scoring error in the seventh inning.

--The Texas Rangers placed right-hander Andrew Cashner on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

Cashner yielded 10 hits and four runs in four-plus innings for the loss of the Houston Astros' 13-2 victory over the Rangers on Wednesday night. The move to the DL is retroactive to Thursday.

Cashner, 30, has gone 3-6 with a 3.50 ERA over 69 1/3 innings in 12 starts for Texas this season. He ranks second on the staff in ERA and is 13th in the American League. The first date he would be eligible to return is June 25.

The Rangers also recalled right-hander Ernesto Frieri from Triple-A Round Rock. To make room on the 40-man roster for Frieri, the team designated outfielder Peter O'Brien for assignment.

--Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis likely will be sidelined until after the All-Star break with a right oblique strain.

The Orioles placed Davis on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday after he was injured during Monday's 10-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox while flying out to right field with the bases loaded in the third inning.

Davis, 31, told reporters Saturday he will have to wait about a week to 10 days for the inflammation and swelling to subside before resuming any baseball activities.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter indicated he doesn't expect Davis back before the All-Star break, which begins July 10.

"I think three weeks would be real ambitious," Showalter said before Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. "I'd sign up for that right now, but who knows.

--The Tampa Bay Rays acquired infielder Trevor Plouffe from the Oakland Athletics, two days after he was designated for assignment.

The A's traded Plouffe and cash to the Rays in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.

Plouffe was batting .214 with seven home runs and 14 RBIs in 58 games with Oakland before he was designated for assignment on Thursday, his 31st birthday. He was 6-for-51 (.118) over his last 18 games.

                    • LEADING OFF: Father's Day tributes, Nats streak, Yanks skid
                      June 17, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

                      DAD'S DAY

Major League Baseball is paying tribute to the dads this weekend, with blue tones added to hats, uniforms and cleats for Father's Day. Nationals star Bryce Harper wore eyeblack patches to honor his pop. Angels teammates Cam Bedrosian, C.J. Cron certainly could share some stories - all of their dads played in the majors, too.

                      DAZZLING DIAMONDACK

Arizona lefty Robbie Ray is 5-0 with a 0.24 ERA in his last five starts. He'll try to give the Diamondbacks their seventh straight win when he pitches at Philadelphia. The Phils have lost 10 of 11.

                      CLOSE IT DOWN

The Yankees have lost a season-high five in a row, blowing a couple of late leads along the way. They expect to activate closer Aroldis Chapman from the disabled list before they play at Oakland. Chapman has been out for more than a month with inflammation in his left rotator cuff, and was shaky in a Double-A rehab outing Friday.

                      WASHING `EM AWAY

The Nationals go for a four-game sweep at Citi Field - the NL East leaders have battered the Mets so far in the series, totaling eight home runs, a triple and nine doubles. Washington is 6-0 at the Queens ballpark this season, and now face Jacob deGrom, who pitched the Mets' only complete game this year in his last start.

                      SLIDING

Cincinnati has lost eight in a row going into the series finale vs. the Dodgers. The Reds stumbled again Saturday, falling 10-2 soon after hometown star and all-time hits king Pete Rose unveiled a bronze statue in front of Great American Ball Park showing him making a headfirst slide.

                      BELLINGER'S SPLURGE

Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger tries to keep his record-tying homer surge when Los Angeles faces the Reds. He hit his 19th homer - in only 49 career games - during a 10-2 win on Saturday. He matched the Yankees' Gary Sanchez for fewest career games to hit 19.

                      • Rays acquire INF Plouffe from Athletics
                        June 17, 2017

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired infielder Trevor Plouffe from the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, two days after he was designated for assignment.

Plouffe, who signed with the A's as a free agent prior to the 2017 season, is a .245 career hitter with 103 home runs and 371 RBIs in 781 games in eight seasons in the majors with the Minnesota Twins (2010-16) and Athletics. He signed a one-year, $5.25-million deal with Oakland after being non-tendered by the Twins.

Third base has been Plouffe's primary position, but he also can play first base and is expected to provide depth at the position for the Rays.

                        • Twins sign top draft pick Royce Lewis
                          June 17, 2017

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Minnesota Twins have signed shortstop Royce Lewis, giving the first overall pick in the amateur draft this week a $6,725,000 bonus that's the most for a high school player since the new compensation system began five years ago.

Lewis put his signature on the contract Saturday during a news conference at Target Field held between games of a doubleheader. He will start his professional career with Minnesota's rookie-level Gulf Coast League affiliate in Fort Myers, Florida.

''This is every boy's dream,'' said Lewis, who was the Gatorade Player of the Year for California, where he starred at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano in Orange County.

The Twins have raved this week about his leadership and maturity, and the 18-year-old's buoyant personality was on full display when he mentioned meeting manager Paul Molitor among the awe-filled moments of his visit to Minnesota.

''I'm like, `Whoa, over 3,000 hits, .306 career batting average.' I'm like, `I'd like to do that someday,''' Lewis said.

Molitor, who stood inside the room, smiled at the praise.

Major League Baseball's recommended slot value for his bonus was $7,770,700. With little separation among the top five or six prospects this year in the view of most analysts, the Twins targeted Lewis in part because they could sign him for less and better leverage the rest of the money in their bonus pool ($14,156,800) toward persuading lower picks to sign with them instead of going to college.

Last year, the Philadelphia Phillies signed Mickey Moniak, a high school outfielder from California, for $6.1 million.

Baseball's labor contract assigns a slot value to all picks in the first 10 rounds, and if a team fails to sign a player the amount of that slot is deducted from its pool. For the 11th through 40th rounds, the amounts of bonuses exceeding $100,000 per pick are added to a team's total for calculating a penalty tax.

Scott Boras, the agent for Lewis, recalled attending one of his client's games with Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey and general manager Thad Levine. No lobbying was necessary by Boras, because the Twins were already sold.

''When I saw Royce take a 3-2 slider that was a very difficult pitch for a high school player to take, take it, get on first, steal second, steal third, score on a popup that was beyond shortstop,'' Boras said, ''I kind of knew in Thad's gleam of his eye that he had seen everything that we had seen for years.''

                          • O's Davis likely out until All-Star break
                            June 17, 2017

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis likely will be sidelined until after the All-Star break with a right oblique strain.

"I was basically told it's sensitive," Davis said. "It's one of those things you don't want to rush because if you have a setback, it makes things that much harder. But right now, just kind of taking it day by day. Obviously, really frustrated and especially with the way things are going. I'll be sitting on the bench not really able to do anything except cheer and encourage guys. It's a pretty awful feeling.

"(It's) just kind of a touch-and-feel thing right now. ... There's not really much you can do for it. There's not really much you can do to protect against it. It's just one of those mysteries, I guess. Obviously, had the left oblique injury a few years ago. I don't feel like this is as severe, but it takes so much time to get the swelling down, the inflammation out and then you can get to a point where you can try to do any kind of work."

"It was Grade 1, so he had it before on the other side. We'll see. I'd love to see that was the case. These things are so hard to get a grip on. I've seen them when you try to test them at a certain period of time and it's not that you re-injure them, but you definitely bring it into play more."

Davis is batting .226 with a team-leading 14 home runs and 26 RBIs in 61 games this season. He also leads the majors with 95 strikeouts.

Davis is in the second year of a club-record seven-year, $161 million deal.
