  • MLB notebook: Broadcaster Remy apologizes for remark
    June 7, 2017

Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy apologized on Wednesday for his on-air remarks that pitchers such as New York Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka shouldn't be allowed translators on the mound.

Remy took to Twitter to announce his apology, one day after he came under fire for his comments during the fourth inning of a NESN telecast.

After Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild and Japanese translator Shingo Horie visited Tanaka on the mound following back-to-back homers to Mitch Moreland and Hanley Ramirez, the 64-year-old Remy said the following:

"Learn baseball language," Remy said. "It's pretty simple. You break it down pretty easy between pitching coach and pitcher after a long period of time."

Remy's remark was roundly blasted on social media. On Wednesday, the long-time Red Sox announcer offered his apology.

"I sincerely apologize to those who were offended by my comments during the telecast last night," Remy wrote.

Major League Baseball adopted a rule in 2013 that allowed interpreters to join mound conferences.

--The Seattle Mariners signed shortstop Jean Segura to a five-year contract extension.

Terms of the agreement covering the 2018-2022 seasons were not disclosed but the deal reportedly is worth $70 million, and includes a no-trade clause and a $17 million club option for 2023.

In his first season with the Mariners, the 27-year-old Segura is hitting .341 with four home runs, 20 RBIs, a .391 on-base percentage and a .852 OPS in 43 games.

Segura was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Friday after he sustained a high right ankle sprain.

--The Pittsburgh Pirates placed catcher Francisco Cervelli on the seven-day concussion disabled list.

Catcher Jacob Stallings was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to take the roster spot of Cervelli, who sustained the injury while taking a foul ball off his mask in Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Cervelli, 31, is hitting .252 with three homers and 20 RBIs in 47 games this season.

    • LEADING OFF: Rockies visit Wrigley; Price vs Pineda, Yanks
      June 7, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

      MEASURING STICK

The surprising Rockies, who lead the National League with 38 wins, get a tough test when they open a four-game series at Wrigley Field against the World Series champion Cubs. Colorado is a season-best 15 games above .500 and has outscored its opponents 32-6 during a four-game winning streak. Tyler Chatwood (5-7, 4.60 ERA) starts against Chicago lefty Jon Lester (3-3, 3.91).

      AL EAST SHOWDOWN

David Price (1-0) starts for the Red Sox in the rubber game of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium, his third outing since returning from a sore elbow that had sidelined the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner since spring training. Price allowed one run and three hits over seven innings in a 5-2 win against Baltimore on Saturday. Michael Pineda (6-3) pitches for New York, which leads the AL East by two games over rival Boston.

      HITLESS WONDER

Coming off his no-hitter against Arizona, right-hander Edinson Volquez (2-7, 3.80 ERA) starts for Miami in Pittsburgh. Volquez tweaked his right ankle in the first inning last Saturday but stayed in and tossed the sixth no-hitter in Marlins history. He threw a bullpen session Tuesday and is on track to pitch against Gerrit Cole (3-5, 4.27) and the Pirates. ''He's feeling better,'' Miami manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday about Volquez. ''We're comfortable he'll be close to 100 percent.''

      ON HOLD AGAIN

Third baseman Adrian Beltre gets more time to rest his sprained left ankle when the Rangers have a scheduled day off before their weekend series at Washington. The 38-year-old Beltre, only 48 hits from 3,000, was out of the lineup Wednesday night against the Mets and it was unclear how long he might be sidelined. He got hurt again Tuesday in the seventh game since the belated debut of his 20th season. He missed the first 51 games because of calf issues. ''He wants to play,'' Texas manager Jeff Banister said. ''Adrian plays with a different purpose than most.''

      GIANT NEMESIS

San Francisco right-hander Johnny Cueto (5-5) takes an eight-game winning streak against the Brewers into his start at Miller Park in Milwaukee. The run began in September 2012 when Cueto was with Cincinnati, and he has a 1.68 ERA during that stretch.

      NO FEAR

Ben Lively makes his second career start for Philadelphia in the finale of a four-game series against the Braves. Lively drew praise from Phillies manager Pete Mackanin because he ''showed no fear'' in winning his major league debut last week. The 25-year-old allowed only four hits and one run in seven innings of a 5-3 win over the Giants on Saturday. After the game, Mackanin joked: ''He's my favorite pitcher.''

Hottest team: Mariners (9-1 last 10) vs. Twins

Seattle is finding its way after a slow start to pull into second place in the AL West at 30-30. The Mariners remain 12 games behind the runaway train known as the Astros, but at least Seattle is back in the AL Wild Card race as it rallied for a 6-5 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday. The Mariners have caught fire at Safeco Field since dropping three of four to the White Sox last month by going 6-1 on their current homestand.

The M’s go for the sweep of the Twins tonight before the Blue Jays invade the Pacific Northwest on Friday. Christian Bergman takes the mound as the right-hander has been on fire (see below) for Seattle recently. During this current five-game winning streak, the M’s have averaged 9.2 runs per game. Last month, the Mariners went through an eight-game stretch where they scored a total of nine runs.

Coldest team: Cardinals (0-6 last six) at Reds

Talk about a roller coaster season for St. Louis. The Redbirds began 2017 at 3-9, but found their way atop the NL Central in early May. However, things have gone backwards for St. Louis recently by losing 11 of its past 14 games, while dropping all six games on their current road swing. The Cardinals squandered a 3-0 lead in Wednesday’s 6-4 setback at Cincinnati.
St. Louis tries to avoid the four-game sweep to Cincinnati on Thursday afternoon as former Red Mike Leake takes the mound. Leake started the season at 4-1, but the right-hander is winless in four of his past five starts. In two starts against the Reds this season, Leake has allowed just two earned runs in 14 innings of work, but St. Louis has lost both times to Cincinnati as a heavy favorite.

Hottest pitcher: Christian Bergman, Mariners (3-2, 4.36 ERA)

For a rotation that has gone most of this season without ace Felix Hernandez, Bergman has emerged as a nice surprise lately. The ex-Colorado Rockies’ righty bounced back from a terrible start at Washington in which he was torched for 10 earned runs in four innings of work on May 23 to beat the Red Sox and Rays. Bergman put together seven scoreless innings in a 5-0 victory at Boston as a +175 underdog, while scattering seven hits and two earned runs in six innings of a 12-4 rout of the Rays.

Coldest pitcher: Joe Ross, Nationals (2-2, 7.34 ERA)

The Washington right-hander tossed eight innings of five-hit ball against Seattle in a 10-1 blowout on May 23. Since that victory, Ross has gone backwards by losing each of his last two starts to the Padres and Athletics. Ross pitched a total of seven innings, while yielding 19 hits and 12 runs (11 earned), as the third-year pitcher has given up at least five earned runs in four of his past five outings. The task doesn’t get easier in a make-up contest with the rival Orioles, as Baltimore has taken two of three meetings from Washington.

Biggest OVER run: Diamondbacks (4-1 last five)

Arizona registered its third straight OVER in Wednesday’s 7-4 home triumph over San Diego as -220 favorites. The D-backs have plated seven or more runs in four of the last five matchups with the Padres, as Arizona seeks the series sweep this afternoon at Chase Field. Another OVER could be in order today as D-backs’ left-hander Patrick Corbin has been knocked around in his last two starts, allowing 13 runs in nine innings of work. However, both those rough outings came on the road, as Corbin has delivered a pair of quality starts against the Padres this season by giving up two earned runs each time.

Biggest UNDER run: Angels (5-2 last seven)

The Halos and Tigers have played plenty of low-scoring affairs this season, now cashing the UNDER in five of six matchups after Detroit shut out Los Angeles, 4-0 on Wednesday. Since allowing 11 runs to Minnesota on June 2, the Angels have given up a total of 12 runs in the past four games, while moving their mark to 7-2 to the UNDER in the last nine road contests. In Thursday’s matinee, J.C. Ramirez takes the mound for L.A., who owns a perfect 7-0 ledger to the UNDER in seven road starts, including three wins in his last three outings away from Anaheim.

Matchup to Watch: Rockies vs. Cubs

The last time these teams met up at Coors Field in early May, Colorado captured two of three from Chicago. The Rockies head to Wrigley Field for a crucial four-game series between a pair of first place squads in the National League. Colorado travels to the Windy City after sweeping a mini two-game set from Cleveland, while winning four straight.

Tyler Chatwood has been moved up a day for Colorado as the right-hander tries to capitalize off a solid outing at San Diego his last time out. Chatwood struck out eight batters in eight innings of work to pick up only his third win in his previous eight starts. In his only start against the Cubs last season, Chatwood dominated Chicago by tossing seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball in a 2-0 triumph as a hefty +210 underdog.

Jon Lester opposes Chatwood for Chicago, coming off a no-decision against the Cardinals in his last trip to the mound in a 6-3 win. The Cubs own a 5-2 record in Lester’s seven starts at Wrigley Field this season, while winning in each of his past three outings on the North Side. Chicago saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt in Wednesday’s 6-5 defeat to Miami, as the Cubs remain one game behind the Brewers atop the NL Central.

Betcha didn’t know: The Red Sox and Yankees are playing again tonight. Okay, you knew that, but Boston has been dynamic in Game 3’s of a series this season by displaying an 11-3 record, including a 6-1 mark off a loss, coming off an 8-0 rout at the hands of the Yankees last night. Is that record in jeopardy? Sox southpaw David Price failed to produce a victory at Yankee Stadium in three starts last season as he takes the mound in the finale tonight.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-185) at Royals

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+135) at Rays

Biggest line move: Twins (+120 to +105) at Mariners

          • Red Sox turn to Price in Yankees series finale
            June 8, 2017

NEW YORK -- In his last start, David Price turned in one of his finest outings since joining the Boston Red Sox, who are hoping to see more of those performances.

In his last start, Michael Pineda produced his worst performance in nearly two months -- and the New York Yankees are hoping it was an aberration.

Price opposes Pineda in the finale of the three-game series Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.

Price is three starts into his second season with Boston after being sidelined with a strained left elbow. He was eased into the season by pitching five innings in a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox but looked sharp Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles.

In a 5-2 victory, Price allowed one run and three hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked one and needed just 92 pitches, which was four more than his season debut.

"He was outstanding," Boston manager John Farrell said. "Much more consistent location on all his pitches compared to just five days ago in Chicago. He was able to throw his cutter to both sides of the plate. He threw some really good fastballs into some power right-handed hitters to keep them from extending out over the plate. He was in complete control. He got into a great rhythm. A big night for David and a boost for us."

Price experienced little trouble as the Orioles did not get a runner past first base until Manny Machado hit a solo homer in the seventh. Price threw just 12.4 pitches per inning.

"I felt good," Price said. "Just trying to make better pitches. I don't want to be out there throwing 100 pitches or 90 pitches through five innings. I (was) back to being efficient, getting a lot of early outs and not giving up a whole lot of runs."

Price has extensive experience -- but also mixed results -- facing the Yankees. In his first season with Boston, the left-hander was 1-3 with a 7.89 ERA in five starts over 29 2/3 innings.

Price made his major league debut Sept. 14, 2008, in New York with a 5 1/3-inning relief stint for the Tampa Bay Rays. Lifetime against the Yankees, he is 14-10 with a 4.55 ERA in 36 appearances (35 starts). New York's current roster has hit .296 (53-for-179) with three homers and 23 RBIs against Price.

Pineda makes his second attempt to get his seventh victory and hopes it goes better than Friday in Toronto. In a 7-5 loss, he allowed season highs of five runs and 10 hits in five innings and struck out only one hitter.

"My command tonight was not like it used to be," Pineda said. "It happens sometimes, when you don't have your best command so you get in trouble. This is a really good lineup, so you want to compete with your best stuff. For me, today, I didn't have my best stuff."

It was the 11th straight loss for the Yankees in games in which Pineda has allowed at least five runs. Overall, the Yankees are 2-16 when Pineda allows at least five earned runs since he made his debut for the team in 2014.

Friday's loss in Toronto occurred after he had matched a career high by allowing three earned runs or fewer in nine straight starts. In those starts, he was 6-1 with a 2.75 ERA.

Pineda is 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA in six starts at home this season.

Like Price, Pineda has experienced mixed results with the Red Sox. In 11 career starts, the right-hander is 4-5 with a 4.73 ERA against Boston. The combined batting average of Boston's current roster against Pineda is .304 in 102 at-bats, with five home runs and 21 RBIs.

The Yankees will be looking to get their eighth series win at home after evening the series Wednesday with an 8-0 victory. New York hopes Pineda can be as sharp as CC Sabathia, who allowed five hits in eight innings.

The Red Sox look to rebound after losing for only the fifth time in their last 16 games. Boston homered three times in the series opener but was blanked for the fourth time this season Wednesday and is 5-4 on its 10-game road trip.

            • Versatile Montgomery filling valuable role
              June 8, 2017

CHICAGO (AP) Mike Montgomery could take the mound in the sixth, or the eighth, or in extra innings. He might be brought in for a particular left-handed batter, or he could go the distance.

In an era of specialization across baseball - there are closers, eighth-inning guys, lefty specialists and even more roles for major league relievers - Montgomery is a throwback to the days before saves and holds. He could get the ball at any point for the Cubs, and his versatility is a key component of one of the NL's best bullpens.

''What he's doing for us right now is so invaluable out of the bullpen,'' manager Joe Maddon said. ''The wonderful part about it is that he accepts all this. He understands all this. He's not a bellyacher. He doesn't complain about this. He knows that what he is doing right now is very vital to our success.''

Montgomery went one week between outings before he pitched the final 3 1/3 innings of Monday night's 3-1 victory against Miami, allowing three hits and striking out three. The left-hander became the first player with multiple saves of at least 10 outs in a single season since Alfredo Aceves for Boston in 2011, according to baseball-reference.com.

Montgomery has four outings this year of at least three innings, pitching scoreless ball in each one. He has a 2.21 ERA in 36 2/3 innings over 18 appearances this year, serving as a nice jack-of-all-trades for Maddon and his appreciative colleagues in Chicago's bullpen.

''I think the challenge of preparing yourself physically and mentally is a little more unpredictable, so I think at first it was hard for me,'' Montgomery said. ''But like anything, you adapt. It's like, hey, you've got to go in there and get one out, you've just got to do it.''

Montgomery, a first-round pick by Kansas City in the 2008 draft, was a starter when he made his major league debut with Seattle in 2015. The Cubs got him in a trade with the Mariners last July, and he had a 2.82 ERA while making five starts and 12 relief appearances down the stretch.

The 27-year-old Montgomery was on the mound when Chicago finished off its first championship since 1908 last November. He had a 1.93 ERA in the World Series against Cleveland, and then carried the momentum over into this year.

''He's so valuable. You have no idea,'' reliever Pedro Strop said before Wednesday night's 6-5 loss to Miami. ''When you have a guy like that - that can do multiple innings, he can go pitch for an inning, he can warm up quick like a normal reliever - it's really important to have a guy like that in the `pen.

''He's saved us so many times, when we're short on bullpen guys. We appreciate it. Hopefully it will keep going well for him.''

While Chicago's lineup has sputtered so far in its title defense and the starting pitching has been shaky, the bullpen ranks among the majors' best. The eclectic group also has drawn attention for its dance moves whenever the Cubs hit a home run.

''It starts with the talent in the bullpen,'' Montgomery said. ''Everyone is extremely talented, extremely good at their craft and what they do, and then it goes down to, yeah, we have fun out there.''

As much as Montgomery enjoys being a part of that group, he is hoping to return to the rotation at some point. He competed for the fifth starter slot in spring training, but the Cubs went with Brett Anderson in part because Montgomery had proven he could handle a bullpen job.

Now Anderson is on the disabled list with a back injury, and Eddie Butler is starting. But Anderson has piggybacked off Butler for each of his two saves, and could slot into the rotation again at some point soon to provide some rest for the other starters.

''I'm not going to sit here and lie and say I don't want to start,'' Montgomery said. ''But I'm not going to worry about it or try to cause a problem because I think things are going to work out the way they are and I just want to be involved and be an impact with the team, help the team win.''

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Lance McCullers took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Jose Altuve hit a two-run homer in a five-run ninth as the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 6-1 on Thursday night.

Altuve's ninth home run came off Kelvin Herrera (1-2) with Josh Reddick aboard after walking on four pitches to lead off the inning. Herrera has yielded seven home runs in 24 1/3 innings after giving up only six in 72 innings last season.

Herrera retired only one of the five batters he faced and was charged with four runs, three hits and a walk. The inning also included a two-run single by Jake Marisnick.

Lorenzo Cain's one-out triple in the seventh ended McCuller's no-hit bid. Cain drilled a 3-0 pitch to center. He scored on Mike Moustakas' two-out single to tie the score.

Will Harris (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win.

NEW YORK (AP) - Gary Sanchez homered twice to drive in five runs and New York pounded David Price again a night after the Boston ace had an angry exchange with a reporter.

Michael Pineda (7-3) rebounded from a rough outing with seven brilliant innings, and New York took two of three from its rival in their first series at Yankee Stadium this season. On the strength of stingy starts by CC Sabathia and Pineda, the Yankees outscored Boston 17-1 in the final two games and increased their AL East lead to three games over the second-place Red Sox.

Making his third appearance this season since recovering from a strained left elbow, Price (1-1) was tagged for six runs, eight hits and four walks in five innings. He served up both of Sanchez's homers, a three-run shot in the third and a two-run drive in the fifth.

Minutes after Wednesday night's game, Price got into a heated argument with a Red Sox beat writer just outside the team's clubhouse. According to reports, Price cursed at the reporter and then two others when they asked to interview him.

                  ROCKIES 4, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Tyler Chatwood pitched four-hit ball over six innings, DJ LeMahieu hit a three-run homer and Colorado beat Chicago for its season-high fifth straight win.

The NL West leaders got all their runs in the second inning after Jon Lester (3-4) struck out the first two batters. LeMahieu's drive to the right field basket made it 4-1.

Lester lost at Wrigley Field for the first time in nearly 13 months, while the Cubs dropped their second straight after winning a season-high five in a row. They did that hours after Major League Baseball said it is looking into a domestic violence accusation against shortstop Addison Russell.

Chatwood (6-7) shut down Chicago after giving up a solo homer to Kris Bryant in the first. He also singled and scored.

Greg Holland picked up his major league-leading 22nd save in as many chances with a scoreless ninth.

                  GIANTS 9, BREWERS 5, 10 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Hunter Pence's RBI single opened the scoring in a four-run 10th inning, and San Francisco overcame a rough outing by closer Mark Melancon for a wild victory.

Denard Span added an RBI double in the 10th off Brewers reliever Jacob Barnes (1-1), who gave up five hits and four runs without retiring a batter.

The Giants rallied after Melancon blew a two-run lead in the ninth. Eric Sogard led off the ninth with a homer, and Travis Shaw's RBI single three batters later tied the game at 5 with no outs before Melancon got the next three hitters.

Melancon (1-1) ended up with the win in spite of giving up three runs and two hits.

                  DIAMONDBACKS 15, PADRES 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Chris Iannetta drove in a career-high seven runs with a home run and a pair of doubles, and Arizona routed San Diego to finish a three-game sweep.

Iannetta hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off Clayton Richard (4-7) for a 4-3 lead in the fifth, a three-run double against Kevin Quackenbush in the sixth and a two-run double off Brandon Maurer in the eighth. Six of Iannetta's eight home runs this season have tied the score or put the Diamondbacks ahead.

Arizona scored 10 runs with two outs, won its ninth straight at Chase Field and improved the best home record in the major leagues to 24-8.

Patrick Corbin (5-6) improved to 5-0 in six home starts, allowing three runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and three walks.

                  MARLINS 7, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Edinson Volquez followed his no-hitter by pitching seven scoreless innings and Miami beat Pittsburgh.

Volquez (3-7) allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked two while winning his third straight start. He helped the Marlins win for the ninth time in 12 games and raised his career record to 4-0 against the Pirates, a team he pitched for in 2013.

Gerrit Cole (3-6) was tagged for seven runs and 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

                  NATIONALS 6, ORIOLES 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Joe Ross had a career-high 12 strikeouts in a sparkling performance, and weary Washington breezed past Baltimore.

Stephen Drew homered into the second deck in right field and Trea Turner had three hits and a career-best three stolen bases for the Nationals, who took control with a four-run first inning against Alec Asher (2-4).

Ross (3-2) gave up one run and four hits over 7 1/3 innings. The right-hander fanned six straight at one point, twice struck out the side, walked none and carried a two-hit shutout into the seventh.

The game was a makeup of a rainout on May 11, and it was painfully apparent that neither team was happy about giving up an off day to participate in the delayed finale of the so-called Beltway Series.

                  REDS 5, CARDINALS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Joey Votto had a two-run homer among his four hits, Adam Duvall had three hits off Mike Leake and Cincinnati completed a four-game sweep.

The Reds hadn't swept the Cardinals in four games since 2003 in Cincinnati, during the first season at Great American Ball Park. St. Louis has lost seven in a row overall for the first time since 2013.

Scott Feldman (5-4) limited the Cardinals' slumping lineup to four singles in seven shutout innings. Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Austin Brice. Raisel Iglesias got his 12th save.

The Reds traded Leake (5-5) to the Giants for Duvall in 2015, and the right-hander signed with the Cardinals after that season. Leake has yet to beat his former team, going 0-4 in seven starts with a 4.79 ERA.

                  RAYS 7, WHITE SOX 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Derek Norris homered in consecutive innings and Jake Odorizzi (4-3) pitched into the seventh, leading Tampa Bay over Chicago.

The White Sox, who have lost seven of eight, came back from a 6-0 deficit. They got the potential tying run to third base with one out in the eighth before Alex Colome came in for a four-out save, his 17th of the season.

Chicago starter Derek Holland (4-6) gave up six runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

                  ANGELS 11, TIGERS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Albert Pujols hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly to cap a four-run fifth inning and Los Angeles added six runs in the seventh to rout Detroit.

JC Ramirez (6-4) gave up four runs - allowing the Tigers to take an early 4-1 lead - and 10 hits over five innings.

Michael Fulmer (6-4) allowed five runs and nine hits over 4 1/3 innings. Detroit relievers Arcenio Leon and Daniel Stumpf combined to give up six runs to let the Angels pull away and win the three-game series.

                  BRAVES 3, PHILLIES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - R.A. Dickey allowed only three hits in seven innings to earn his first win in five weeks and lead Atlanta over rookie Ben Lively (1-1) and Philadelphia.

The 42-year-old Dickey (4-4) set a season high with eight strikeouts. The knuckleballer gave up no walks for the first time this season. He allowed one run in his first victory since May 2 against the Mets.

Jim Johnson pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save.

                  • MLB notebook: Cubs SS Russell accused of domestic violence
                    June 8, 2017

Major League Baseball is investigating allegations of domestic violence levied against Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell by a friend of his wife.

In a post on Instagram, Melisa Russell accused her husband of adultery on Wednesday and indicated she was exiting the relationship.

"Being free to be able to make your own choices," she wrote in the since-deleted post, "beats being cheated on, lied to & disrespected any day. #herestonewbeginnings #onlygetsbetterfromhere."

MLB vice president Pat Courtney told USA Today Sports on Thursday that it "will look into the allegations." Russell issued a statement Thursday afternoon denying the allegations.

"Any allegation I have abused my wife is false and hurtful," Russell said in the statement. "For the well-being of my family, I'll have no further comment."

An All-Star last season, the 23-year-old Addison Russell is batting .209 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 2017.

--Houston Astros ace Dallas Keuchel was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to neck discomfort.

Keuchel was scratched moments before Wednesday's scheduled start against the Kansas City Royals. Astros manager A.J. Hinch said after the contest that Keuchel was scratched due to illness.

Instead, Keuchel traveled to Houston on Thursday to have his neck examined. The left-hander missed a start in May due to a pinched nerve in his neck. Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told reporters that there is no timetable for Keuchel's return.

Keuchel is 9-0 this season and leads the majors in victories, ERA (1.67) and WHIP (0.87).

Houston recalled right-hander Francis Martes from Triple-A Fresno. Martes was 0-2 with a 5.29 ERA in eight starts at Fresno.

--Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was not in the starting lineup Thursday when the Baltimore Orioles played the Washington Nationals in a makeup game from a May 11 rainout.

Machado left Wednesday's game in Baltimore against the Pittsburgh Pirates with left wrist soreness. He was injured in the top of the second inning when Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen slid into Machado on a steal of third.

Machado walked into the Orioles clubhouse around 4 p.m. Thursday with a soft brace on his left wrist. He then went into the office of manager Buck Showalter, and Machado's name was not on the lineup card that was posted about 5 p.m.

--The Chicago Cubs placed right-hander Kyle Hendricks on the 10-day disabled list due to an injured middle finger on his pitching hand.

The right-hander was scheduled to start Friday's game against the Colorado Rockies. Left-hander Mike Montgomery will start in his place.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Hendricks' injury isn't serious. He is hoping rest will solve the issue.

Hendricks is 4-3 with a 4.09 ERA in 11 starts this season. The 27-year-old is coming off a superb 2016 campaign in which he went 16-8, led the National League with a 2.13 ERA and finished third in NL Cy Young Award voting.

                    • Friday’s six-pack

What some professional athletes made in endorsements last year (not salary):

                      — Lebron James, $55M

                      — Steph Curry $35M

                      — Kevin Durant $34M

                      — Rory McIlroy $34M

                      — Clayton Kershaw $800,000

                      — Drew Brees $14M

                      **************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                      13) One of these summers, the NBA should run a 64-player 1-on-1 contest, with proceeds going to charities of the players’ choice. Imagine the TV ratings this would generate?

NBA had it for two years in the early 70’s; they showed clips of the games at halftime of real games months later. Imagine the hype these days if Durant played Westbrook, or if Lebron played Steph Curry? This would be very big.

                      12) My friend Bob sent me stuff from YouTube to watch this week, clips of a HORSE game with Pete Maravich and Bob McAdoo in mid-70’s and a 1-on-1 game with JoJo White and Jeff Mullins from 1972. Winner of the ’72 1-on-1 contest got $15,000— that is tip money for guys today, but I do think this would be a very popular event.

Keith Jackson and Bill Russell were announcers for the 1-on-1 tournament; Don Criqui was doing the HORSE game. Good stuff from back when I was a kid.

                      11) Speaking of which, I found Green Acres re-runs on TV on late night TV this week. This was a goofy, silly comedy based in rural Hooterville— no gag was too stupid to use.

I tormented my parents by watching Green Acres re-runs as a kid; my father would just shake his head and laugh at me, then leave the room. Was fun to watch it for a couple of hours the other night; laughter is good.

                      10) With Bob Stoops retiring at Oklahoma, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz is now the longest-tenured college football coach— Iowa hired him the day after Oklahoma hired Stoops.

                      9) The women’s softball coach at Oklahoma makes $495,000 a year. This surprised me.

                      8) There is a company in Switzerland that has a 4-hole miniature golf layout for workers to use when they need a break from their job. They say it helps stimulate creative thinking.

                      7) According to Catherine Willows on CSI, Keno has the worst odds of any casino game in Las Vegas. In CSI, her character’s father owned casinos, so I’m assuming that little tidbit is true.

                      6) FAU football coach Lane Kiffin offered a 6th grade QB a scholarship this week; kid’s dad is QB guru Steve Clarkson, who works with lot of high school kids trying to improve so they can get college scholarships.

What is the over/under on the the number of jobs Kiffin will have between now and when that 6th grader graduates high school?

                      5) Calgary 23, BC Lions 18— The CFL preseason is underway north of the border.

                      4) When Calvin Johnson retired from the Lions in March 2016, he repaid the club at least $1M of his signing bonus, which may help explain his negative comments about the team a few weeks ago. At that level, at the end of the day, it is all a very big business.

                      3) Quote of the Day, part 2:
“They will have to come over me to get him. As the saying goes, over my dead body.”
U of Arizona President Dr Robert Robbins, on the suggestion that Ohio State hire Arizona’s basketball coach, Sean Miller

                      2) Quote of the Day, part 3
“Learn baseball language. It’s pretty simple. You break it down pretty easy between pitching coach and pitcher after a long period of time.”
Red Sox TV analyst Jerry Remy, criticizing Masahiro Tanaka’s use of an interpreter when the pitching coach comes to mound

Red Sox were fairly quick in distancing themselves from Remy’s remarks.

                      1) How has Giants’ pitcher Hunter Strickland not had his hearing with MLB yet, over the Bryce Harper fracas? Damn fight was May 29; today is June 9. What takes so long???
