CINCINNATI (AP) Scooter Gennett hit four home runs, matching the major league record, and finished with 10 RBIs as the Cincinnati Reds routed the slumping St. Louis Cardinals 13-1 on Tuesday night.

Gennett became the 17th player to homer four times in one game - and perhaps the least likely. A scrappy second baseman who was claimed off waivers from Milwaukee in late March, he began the night with 38 career home runs in five seasons, including three this year.

Josh Hamilton was the previous player to hit four home runs in one game, for Texas against Baltimore in May 2012.

The 27-year-old Gennett singled his first time up and then homered in four straight at-bats, including a grand slam. His 10 RBIs tied Cincinnati's club record.

Gennett snapped an 0-for-19 slump during the Reds' 4-2 win over the Cardinals on Monday. He went 5 for 5 on Tuesday and raised his batting average 32 points to .302.

Since being picked up by the Reds late in spring training, Gennett has played a utility role for Cincinnati. He started in left field Tuesday night.

Gennett hit an RBI single and his second career slam off St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright (6-4)

Tim Adleman (4-2) gave up one run - on Stephen Piscotty's homer - in seven innings.

    ROYALS 9, ASTROS 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Mike Moustakas hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning after Kansas City rallied from a six-run deficit to snap Houston's 11-game winning streak.

Moustakas drove an 0-1 pitch from Ken Giles (1-2) out to right field with Salvador Perez aboard. Moustakas had four hits and three RBIs.

Alex Gordon also homered for the Royals, his first since Sept. 25 - a span of 192 at-bats.

Kansas City trailed 7-1 in the fourth but fought back with a four-run eighth. Whit Merrifield hit a three-run double with two outs to tie it at 7.

Merrifield has hit safely in 20 of his last 21 games. Giles blew his second save in 18 opportunities.

The Astros' winning streak was the longest in the majors this season. They dropped to a major league-best 42-17.

Mike Minor (3-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Carlos Beltran hit his 429th home run for the Astros.

    ROCKIES 11, INDIANS 3

DENVER (AP) - Rookie pitcher Antonio Senzatela hit a three-run double and Mark Reynolds homered twice to drive in five runs for Colorado.

Carlos Gonzalez also hit a home run for the Rockies, who can sweep the two-game interleague set on Wednesday.

Bouncing back from a loss in his previous outing, Senzatela (8-2) allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one in continuing to lead major league rookie pitchers in wins this season while also opening the scoring for Colorado.

Mike Clevinger (2-3) allowed five runs in four innings for Cleveland.

    ORIOLES 6, PIRATES 5, 10 INNINGS

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jonathan Schoop tied it in the ninth inning with his second home run of the game and Mark Trumbo singled home a run in the 10th to rally Baltimore past Pittsburgh.

Baltimore trailed 4-1 after six innings and 5-3 in the ninth. Schoop's two-run drive off closer Tony Watson knotted it at 5, setting the stage for Trumbo's big hit.

Adam Jones singled with one out in the 10th against Wade LeBlanc (3-1) and took second when Manny Machado hit a fly ball to the warning track in left. Trumbo then lined a single to center, and Jones easily beat Andrew McCutchen's throw to the plate.

Brad Brach (1-1) worked the 10th for the Orioles, who improved to 8-1 in extra innings.

    RED SOX 5, YANKEES 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Mitch Moreland and Hanley Ramirez hit back-to-back home runs and Andrew Benintendi later connected off struggling Masahiro Tanaka, powering Boston over New York.

The Red Sox made their first visit of the season to Yankee Stadium, and the matchup between the longtime rivals and top teams in the AL East had the feel of October, mostly because of the raw weather - low 50s, windy and damp.

Overpowering closer Craig Kimbrel struck out five in 1 1/3 innings for his 17th save in 18 chances. He fanned one batter on a wild pitch, and struck out big-hitting rookie Aaron Judge on a 99 mph fastball to finish it.

Playing at the new Yankee Stadium for the first time without now-retired slugger David Ortiz on the roster, the Red Sox launched a trio of long balls and moved within a game of first-place New York.

Tanaka (5-6) lost his career-worst fifth straight start. He's been tagged for 27 runs and 11 homers in 22 2/3 innings during that span.

Drew Pomeranz (6-3) labored through a career-high 123 pitches in five innings to win his third start in a row.

    CUBS 10, MARLINS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Jake Arrieta pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning, Anthony Rizzo drove in four runs and surging Chicago beat Miami for its season-high fifth straight win.

Arrieta (6-4) allowed two runs, struck out five and walked three in just his second win in the past month. The 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner retired 16 in a row over one stretch, showing signs of rounding into form after a bumpy start to the season.

Jason Heyward had three hits and two RBIs as the Cubs remained perfect since returning home after a winless six-game road trip. Kris Bryant reached four times, scored two runs and robbed Giancarlo Stanton of a hit with a diving stop on a grounder to third in the third.

Jeff Locke (0-1) cruised into fifth inning with a 1-0 lead and retired the first two batters before everything fell apart for the Marlins in a hurry.

    WHITE SOX 4, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Avisail Garcia, Volmer Sanchez and Todd Frazier homered to help Chicago stop a five-game losing streak with a victory over Tampa Bay.

Chris Beck (1-0) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning to win in relief of Jose Quintana, who avoided becoming the first pitcher in the major leagues to lose eight games this season.

Garcia led off the seventh with a homer, snapping a 1-all tie against Chris Archer (4-4), who also gave up a leadoff homer to Sanchez on the fourth pitch of the game.

Jose Abreu added an RBI single in the eighth before Frazier led off the ninth with a homer off Ryan Garton.

David Robertson earned his ninth save in 10 opportunities.

    ANGELS 5, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Kole Calhoun and C.J. Cron homered as Los Angeles beat Detroit.

Jesse Chavez (5-6) got the win, allowing two runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Bud Norris struck out Alex Avila for his 11th save.

Daniel Norris (3-3) gave up four runs - three earned - and five hits in six innings. He struck out seven, but allowed two homers.

The loss ended Detroit's four-game winning streak. Avila homered for the Tigers.

    RANGERS 10, METS 7

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Joey Gallo hit a towering two-run homer that put Texas ahead to stay, and the Rangers ended a four-game losing streak with a victory over New York.

Nomar Mazara had four hits and also homered for the Rangers. Gallo's 17th homer put Texas up 5-4.

Mets starter Jacob deGrom (4-3) pitched only four innings for his second straight start. Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1-0) got his first major league victory.

Asdrubal Cabrera and Neil Walker went deep in the third for the Mets. In between those shots, Jay Bruce was robbed of a homer when Jared Hoying made a leaping catch just above the 8-foot wall in straightaway center.

    BREWERS 5, GIANTS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Chase Anderson pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings, drove in a run and won his third straight game for Milwaukee.

Anderson (5-1) extended his scoreless streak to 21 2/3 innings with the win. He walked one, struck out four and helped the Brewers beat the Giants for just the third time in the last 17 games against them.

Anderson collected his first RBI of the season and the fifth of his career in the third with a double off the wall in left.

Hernn Prez added a homer for Milwaukee.

The Brewers roughed up Matt Cain (3-5) with four runs in the second.

    PHILLIES 3, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Aaron Nola allowed a run over eight innings, Odubel Herrera doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth and Philadelphia survived a ninth-inning scare to beat Atlanta.

Nola (3-3) earned his first win since April 20 and became the Phillies' first starter to pitch past the seventh inning this season. Pat Neshek struck out Adonis Garcia and ended the game on Kurt Suzuki's popup to catcher Cameron Rupp for his first save.

Jaime Garcia (2-4) allowed three runs in 7 2/3 innings.

    • Wednesday’s six-pack

      — Reds 13, Cardinals 1— Scooter Gennett, a free agent in our fantasy league, hit four HR’s in this game. He had 17 total bases, two short of the all-time record (Shawn Green).

      — Boston 5, New York 4- Drew Pomeranz threw 123 pitches in his five innings of work, but he got the win.

      — Arizona Cardinals moved their OTA’s inside Tuesday; it was 105 in Phoenix.

      — This spring, 27 of 85 NHL playoff games have gone to OT; 62% of NBA playoff games have been decided by double digit margins.

      — Hope you didn’t bet the over in the Jets’ win total for this year: David Harris was first vet to go, now Eric Decker could be next. They’re trying very hard to get a lot younger.

      — Headed to DL: Bartolo Colon (Braves), Yasmany Tomas (Arizona), Devon Travis (Jays), Jared Cosart (SD), Mike Napoli (Tex).

      ****************************

      Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

      13) Chicago Cubs use an odd defense against sacrifice bunts, with Anthony Rizzo playing in between the mound and 1st base, and the 2B holding the runner on first.

For fantasy baseball purposes, this has made Rizzo technically a second baseman and he is now eligible as a 2B in many leagues. It is an advantage if you have Rizzo on your fantasy team, lets you have an extra 1B in your lineup.

      12) Denver Broncos have a brutal 3-week stretch in mid-season; in Week 7 they go to Carson, CA to play the Chargers, then have a Monday night game in Kansas City in Week 8, before a Week 9 game in Philly six days later. NFL teams historically have done poorly in their third consecutive road game- this one is on short rest.

      11) Baseball is difficult: two weeks ago, Jose Abreu was AL Player of the Week. Last week, he was 2-23. Even the best hitters go thru slumps.

      10) From Chris Fallica on Twitter: Six of the last nine Belmont Stakes favorites ran completely out of the money. American Pharaoh is the only favorite in the last 11 years to win.

      9) Clippers/Rockets will play two preseason games in Hawai’i in October; doesn’t sound like training camp will be too grueling for those two teams.

      8) Nashville’s Frederick Gaudreau is the first NHL player since 1944 whose first three career goals came in the Stanley Cup Finals.

      7) Speaking of the Stanley Cup Finals, other than Nashville/Pittsburgh, the finals are getting their best TV ratings in this country in Buffalo.

      6) Arkansas sophomore pitcher Kacey Murphy threw 74 pitches in an NCAA tournament game on Sunday; he started Monday’s game.

      5) College baseball has an interesting dynamic; with the national tournament going on at the same time as the major league draft next week— the older players keep one eye on who their next team will be, and one eye on trying to win with their college team.

      4) A guy on American Pickers on the History Channel had a collection of license plates on his wall; every style of license plate ever issued in Pennsylvania. Pretty cool. Some of the stuff people collect is fascinating.

      3) Graduate transfer Cameron Johnson wants to transfer from Pitt to North Carolina, but the Panthers want to block him from going to another ACC team.

This could get dicey; when he was at Vanderbilt, Kevin Stallings blocked Sheldon Jeter from transferring to Pitt— Jones went to a JC for a year before winding up at Pitt, and then two years later, Stallings showed up as the Panthers’ head coach- awkward.

      2) Interesting debate: Who is the best quarterback in Packers’ history? Bart Starr? Brett Favre? Aaron Rodgers? You can make a case for all three.

      1) Forbes Magazine now says the Golden State Warriors are worth $2.6B, 3rd-most in NBA behind the Lakers/Knicks. In 2011, the Warriors’ worth was below the NBA average- they’ve got a new arena in San Francisco on the way, and all this winning sure helps, too.

      • LEADING OFF: Gennett follows 4-HR game; Kershaw vs Strasburg
        June 6, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

        BIG SWINGS FOR SCOOTER

One night after hitting four home runs to match the major league record, Scooter Gennett tries to extend his stunning power surge when the Reds host the Cardinals again. Gennett became the 17th player to go deep four times in one game - and perhaps the least likely. Claimed off waivers from Milwaukee in late March, he began the night with 38 career home runs in five seasons, including three this year. Josh Hamilton was the previous player to hit four home runs in one game, for Texas against Baltimore in 2012. The 27-year-old Gennett singled his first time up and then homered in four straight at-bats, including a grand slam. His 10 RBIs tied Cincinnati's club record. He went 5 for 5 and raised his batting average 32 points to .302.

        PRIZE FIGHT

Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw and Nationals righty Stephen Strasburg square off in a matinee matchup of NL Cy Young Award contenders. Kershaw (7-2, 2.28 ERA) struck out 14 in his last start against Milwaukee to reach 2,000 strikeouts for his career, although he's the ace has allowed four homers over his past two starts. Strasburg (7-1, 2.91) is two starts removed from striking out a career-high 15 against San Diego. Los Angeles has won six straight games with Kershaw starting, and Washington has also won six consecutive when Strasburg has pitched.

        PERFECT 10

Dallas Keuchel attempts to go 10-0 when the major league-best Astros (42-17) play at Kansas City. Keuchel leads the majors with a 1.67 ERA and will face fellow left-hander Jason Vargas (7-3), who ranks second with a 2.08 ERA. The Royals rallied from a six-run deficit and stopped Houston's 11-game winning streak Tuesday night when Mike Moustakas hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning off closer Ken Giles.

        STRONG ARMS

In a matchup of Cy Young Award winners, Rick Porcello (3-7) starts for the Red Sox against CC Sabathia (6-2) at Yankee Stadium. Porcello has thrown at least six innings in each of his last 18 road starts, the longest active streak in the majors. The next-longest string is seven, by Clayton Kershaw and Madison Bumgarner. Sabathia has won four straight starts for the first time since 2012. He is 13-13 in 35 career starts vs. Boston.

        NOT SO KUHL

Pirates right-hander Chad Kuhl attempts to end a five-game losing streak in a matchup against Baltimore at Camden Yards. After winning his first outing of the season on April 8 against Atlanta, Kuhl (1-5, 6.02 ERA) has gone 10 straight starts without a win. This will be the first time in his career he faces the Orioles, who send Wade Miley to the mound in this interleague contest.

                    June 7, 2017

Hottest team: Mariners (4-0 past four games, 8-1 past nine overall)

The Mariners have caught fire lately, playing very well despite the fact they're working with a patchwork rotation due to several injuries. Seattle ran to a 12-3 win over Minnesota in Tuesday's series opener behind southpaw James Paxton, as the southpaw improved to 5-0. Seattle's hot streak will be put to the test with Yovani Gallardo on the hill, as the M's are just 3-8 over his past 11 outings, including 1-5 in his past six assignments at Safeco Field. The Twins counter with Adalberto Mejia, who has a respectable 3.95 ERA with two quality starts over his past three outings.

Coldest team Cardinals (0-5 past five games, 5-15 past 20 overall)

The Cardinals haven't appeared on the 'cold' list very often over the years, but St. Louis might have hit rock bottom on Tuesday. The Reds put a 13-1 beating on ace Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals in the second loss in as many nights at Great American Ball Park. The Cards hope Lance Lynn can do what Waino could not -- and that's break a losing skid. The Cardinals have dropped five straight overall, six in a row on the road and four in a row against teams with a losing overal mark. They're also 0-7 in their past seven road outings against a right-handed starter and 5-16 in their past 21 road games agaisnt teams with a winning home record. St. Louis has won 11 of Lynn's past 15 starts against the Reds, but they're just 1-5 in their past six at GBAP.

Hottest pitcher: Dallas Keuchel, Astros (9-0, 1.67 ERA)

The Astros find themselves in a rare spot, and that's bouncing back from a loss. The Astros came up short in a 9-7 battle at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday, their first loss since May 24 at home against the Tigers. The loss also snapped an 11-game road win streak dating back to May 14 at N.Y. Yankees. Houston has posted six victories in their past seven against left-handed starters while 36-15 in their past 51 games on the road. The Astros have also won Keuchel's past four starts against a team with a losing overaell record, and they're a perfect 7-0 in Keuchel's past seven road outings. Conversely, the Royals are a dismal 1-5 in their past six tries at home vs. LHP.

Coldest pitcher: Bronson Arroyo, Reds (3-4, 6.24 ERA)

Arroyo takes the bump against the ice-cold Cardinals, but St. Louis could find their offense against the veteran. He has served up 19 home runs across 57 2/3 innings, most homers allowed in the majors this season. Opponents are batting .288 against Arroyo with a very mediocre 1.44 WHIP across 11 starts. The Reds have also struggled with Arroyo on the hill against the Cardinals, going 1-7 over his past eight tries against the Redbirds and 0-4 in his past four starts at GBAP. St. Louis has been terrible lately, but Arroyo has been terrible against the Cards. Something's gotta give.

Biggest UNDER run: Dodgers (6-1 past seven games overall)

The Los Angeles offense has been disappointing lately, amassing a total of just three runs in their past three games. It doesn't help that the red-hot Gio Gonzalez and Max Scherzer were pitching lights out in the first two games of the current set. However. Los Angeles has totaled six runs in six of their past seven games with one 10-run outlier on June 3 during their cold streak. The under is 4-0 in L.A.'s past four following a loss, 5-1 in their past six against a right-handed starter and 4-1 in their past five at home. Wtih Clayton Kershaw on the hill, you'd think an 'under' is a lock. However, the over is 6-2 over his past eight, although the 'under' is 11-4 in his past 15 home outings against a team with a winning mark.

Biggest OVER run: Astros (5-1-3 past nine games overall)

The Astros offense has been on fire lately. Even in a rare loss on Tuesday the Astros were able to amass seven runs. The over is 3-1-3 in their past seven against teams with a losing record, 8-2-3 in their past 13 games on the road while going 4-0-3 in their past seven against AL Central foes. The over is also 4-1-1 in Keuchel's past six against a Central club while going 4-1 in Keuchel's past five while working on four days of rest. The over is also 3-0-1 in the past four meetings between these clubs and 5-1-1 in the past seven at Kauffman Stadium.

Matchup to watch: Royals vs. Astros

The Royals finally cooled off the Astros, snapping their 11-game winning streak on Tuesday night. The Royals turn to Jason Vargas looking to hand Keuchel his first loss, while giving the Astros a second straight setback. Houston hasn't lost back-to-back games since a three-game sweep at the hands of the Indians back on May 19-21. If anyone can hand Keuchel that first loss it might be Vargas. He enters play with a 7-3 record, 2.08 ERA and 16 walks with 54 strikeouts over 69 1/3 innings. He is also coming off a complete game shutout against the Indians last time out.

Betcha didn’t know: The Diamondbacks have the league's best record at home with 22 victories in 30 games at Chase Field. They'll be searching for their eighth consecutive win in Arizona in the middle game against San Diego on Wednesday night. The Padres haven't been as fortunate, especially on the road. San Diego has won just two of their past 11 divisional games while winning just one of Luis Perdomo's past five outings. Arizona turns to Zack Greinke to keep them in the win column. They're 5-1 over his past six starts, and 6-1 in his past seven tries at home. San Diego has won just once in the past five tries against the Snakes, and they're 1-7 in their past eight trips to the desert.

Biggest public favorite: Diamondbacks (-200) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: Yankees (+110) vs. Red Sox

Biggest line move: Indians (+110 to -115) at Rockies

3B Adrian Beltre, in just his seventh game since returning from the DL, sprained his left ankle Tuesday and left the park in a walking boot.

He was due to be re-evaluated Wednesday.

Beltre missed the season's first seven weeks due to a strained right calf.

                        • Lefty vs. Righty Splits
                          June 6, 2017

Comparing team batting splits against right-handed pitching and left-handed pitching can offer some handicapping opportunities.

For example the Blue Jays being just 3-10 vs. left-handed starters this season while White Sox being 11-7 vs. left-handed starters can explain the somewhat unexpected results of those squads to some degree.

Here is a deeper look at some of the team batting splits in the American League through early June in the 2017 season.

Best hitting team vs. right-handers: Houston Astros

With an amazing 42-16 record the Astros are pacing baseball, holding a 14-game lead in the AL West barely two months into the season. Improvement has basically been across the board for Houston and the Astros have the AL’s top OPS vs. right-handed pitching at .824, while sitting second in the AL vs. left-handed pitching at .793. Both numbers are a huge improvement on the 2016 numbers with a .087 boost vs. righties and a .062 boost vs. lefties, two of the biggest jumps in the league.

Best hitting team vs. left-handed pitching: Chicago White Sox

The White Sox have been a surprise this season as Chicago was almost universally projected to be the very worst team in the AL. Chicago has slipped a bit in the last few weeks to sit at 24-31 to make any playoff hopes faint but this remains a team that is likely to outperform a projected win total in the upper 60s with only San Diego facing a more dire spring training outlook. Chicago has been the league’s worst hitting team vs. right-handed pitching with a .681 OPS but vs. left-handers Chicago owns a .815 OPS for by far the best mark in the AL. Looking at the lineup it isn’t a major surprise the splits are so lopsided as Chicago routinely uses only right-handers and switch-hitters in its lineup, even against right-handed pitching.

Most improved vs. right-handed pitching: New York Yankees

New York’s offense has flourished this season and while the numbers vs. left-handed pitching are only slightly improved compared with the 2016 season the numbers vs. right-handers have made a dramatic jump. Against right-handers New York has gone from posting a .724 OPS in 2016 to a .814 OPS so far in 2017, the biggest positive leap of any team vs. either side compared with last season. Aaron Judge alone is providing much of the boost with 14 of his 18 home runs vs. right-handers posting an outrageous 1.111 OPS in 170 plate appearances vs. right-handers. Switch hitter Aaron Hicks has also been very productive batting left-handed, while catcher Gary Sanchez is a far better hitter vs. right-handers despite batting right-handed.

Biggest decline vs. right-handed pitching: Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are certainly still in striking distance in the AL East and at worst a clear AL Wild Card contender but the team has been a mild disappointment as one of the consensus favorites in the AL before the season started. Boston just got David Price back which will likely boost the pitching staff but the offense simply hasn’t been as successful as last season with David Ortiz out of the lineup. Boston had the league’s best OPS vs. left-handers last season at .795 and in 2017 Boston still remains a quality hitting team vs. left-handers with a .771 OPS for only a modest decline. That is .025 points higher than the .746 OPS the Red Sox have against right-handers for the biggest gap in the league for a team that is stronger vs. southpaws and nowhere near the league-leading .814 OPS the Red Sox posted last season vs. right-handed pitching.

Most balanced hitting team: Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore owns a .734 OPS vs. right-handers and a .728 OPS vs. left-handers this season for the smallest difference between sides among the 15 AL teams. Last season Baltimore had a massive contrast in those figures with a .090 gap being a far better hitting team vs. right-handers but the numbers have declined this season vs. righties while they have climbed vs. lefties. The Orioles have not had the production they expected from Manny Machado and Mark Trumbo so far this season with Machado incredibly batting only .208 vs. right-handed pitching this season (.283 last season) while Trumbo is batting .253 but with only five home runs in 150 at-bats vs. right-handers after hitting 37 in those matchups last season.

Worst hitting team: Kansas City Royals

Kansas City has featured the biggest OPS decline in the AL vs. left-handed pitching and the second biggest decline in the AL in OPS vs. right-handed pitching. Kansa City has the second worst OPS in the league vs. right-handers at .682, just barely ahead of Chicago while sitting as by far the worst hitting team in the AL vs. left-handers with a .634 OPS. The big off-season concern for the Royals was their starting rotation but Jason Vargas is having a career year and Nate Karns and Danny Duffy are offering some promise. Jason Hammel and Ian Kennedy have disappointed and the bullpen isn’t as strong as in the past few years but most of the blame of the great struggles for the Royals fall on the offense.

Disappointment Due to Decline vs. left-handed pitching: Cleveland, Texas, Toronto, Seattle

The Indians and Rangers and Blue Jays were playoff teams last season while the Mariners were a wild card contender late into the season. There is still time for these talented teams to make a run but they all have a common thread of a big production decline vs. left-handed pitching this season. Cleveland’s drop has been the most modest of the group falling .043 but last season’s surge vs. left-handers to a .748 clip may have been the difference in the pennant winning season. This year’s lineup is more left-handed heavy with Michael Brantley’s return and Cleveland’s rotation has not yet matched last season’s success as well.

Toronto has been known as a fierce hitting team vs. left-handers in recent years but this season the Blue Jays have a .678 OPS vs. left-handers for a huge drop compared with last season. Losing Edwin Encarnacion certainly has to be considered a major factor. It is worth noting that Josh Donaldson missed much of the first two months of the season as the numbers vs. left-handers should climb with his return as he owns a career .959 OPS vs. southpaws.

Seattle’s OPS vs. left-handers has fallen from a very respectable .749 in 2016 to just .652, or the second worst in the AL. Seattle has managed to go 7-8 vs. left-handed starters but a team many expected to be a serious AL contender has had very unbalanced results at the plate with an OPS .119 points higher vs. right-handers. The Mariners often have at least four left-handed batters in the lineup vs. right-handers and lefties Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager will stay in the middle of the lineup vs. southpaws even though particularly in Cano’s case there is a huge drop in his production in those matchups.

Texas won 95 games last season despite a marginal scoring differential as many expected a decline for the Rangers in 2017. Last season Texas had successful balanced hitting vs. lefties and righties and in 2017 the numbers vs. right-handers have only fallen slightly. Against left-handers Texas has fallen from a .759 OPS clip to a .657 OPS clip, so far posting just six wins vs. southpaw starters. The recent return of Adrian Beltre in the middle of the lineup could help that cause in the coming weeks however.

Success via Improvement vs. right-handed pitching: New York, Houston, Minnesota, Tampa Bay

The improvement for New York and Houston vs. right-handed pitching has been dramatic and a big reason those teams are on top of the AL. The Yankees are 24-16 vs. right-handed starters while Houston is absurdly 33-10 vs. right-handed starters at this point in the season.

Minnesota’s ascension to the AL Central lead isn’t expected to last but going from one of the league’s lesser hitting teams vs. right-handers to a .773 OPS that is in the AL’s upper tier is a big reason for the team’s success this season. Minnesota is actually hitting far worse in 2017 vs. left-handed pitching than the team did in 2016 but they have only faced 12 left-handed starters this season. Minnesota’s improved pitching and defense are big factors as well but the lineup is having more success in the most common matchups, often using a lineup that includes six left-handed hitters with the addition of Jason Castro and the everyday play of switch-hitter Jorge Polanco.

Tampa Bay has been one of the league’s better hitting teams vs. left-handers in recent years including going 30-23 vs. left-handed starters in 2015 but something has changed this season as the Rays are .120 OPS points better vs. right-handers this season, the third best hitting team vs. righties behind Houston and New York. As a result the Rays have gone from being 18 games below .500 vs. right-handers in 2016 to being 22-18 vs. right-handed starters so far this season. The most obvious changes are left-handed hitter Corey Dickerson being the team’s leadoff hitter plus the addition of another lefty power bat in Colby Rasmus as the Rays generally have at least four left-handers in the lineup. Oddly Dickerson is batting .353 vs. left-handers this season as he hasn’t hurt the numbers while Rasmus is usually in a platoon role. Logan Morrison is a clean-up hitter with much worse numbers vs. southpaws and Kevin Keirmaier is batting just .178 vs. lefties this season to help explain the decline.

                            • MLB roundup: Dodgers' Kershaw records eighth win
                              June 7, 2017

BALTIMORE -- Trey Mancini's pinch-hit homer in the ninth sent the game into extra innings, and his three-run homer with two outs in the 11th gave the Baltimore Orioles a 9-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night.

Baltimore, which is 9-1 in extra innings, started the winning rally when Joey Rickard singled with one out against Wade LeBlanc (3-2). Caleb Joseph drew a two-out walk before Mancini crushed LeBlanc's first pitch deep into the seats in left.

The Orioles rallied late for a second consecutive night, scoring four in the ninth to tie it. Closer Tony Watson came on with runners on second and third and no outs and allowed a sacrifice fly and J.J. Hardy's RBI double, which cut the lead to 6-4.

Mancini hit a game-tying, two-run homer with two outs off Watson -- on a 2-2 count. Watson has blown saves in back-to-back games.

                              Dodgers 2, Nationals 1

LOS ANGELES -- Corey Seager homered and Yasmani Grandal doubled home the go-ahead run to lift Los Angeles over Washington.

Clayton Kershaw (8-2) struck out nine with three walks. He allowed one run on three hits in seven innings to help the Dodgers end a three-game slide and avoid a sweep in the three-game series.

Kershaw outdueled the Nationals' Stephen Strasburg in their first matchup. Strasburg blanked the Dodgers for five innings before allowing two runs (one earned) in the sixth. Strasburg yielded three hits and a walk while fanning eight in six innings.

                              Yankees 8, Red Sox 0

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia won his fifth consecutive start by allowing five hits in eight innings as New York dominated Boston.

Chris Carter drove in four runs with a three-run homer and an RBI single, and was robbed of another potential home run by right fielder Mookie Betts. Didi Gregorius hit a solo homer, and Gary Sanchez, Matt Holliday and Brett Gardner added RBI singles.

Sabathia (7-2) became the American League's fifth seven-game winner and turned in his longest outing since April 20, 2015. Rick Porcello (3-8), the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, allowed six runs (five earned) and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.

                              Royals 7, Astros 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Cheslor Cuthbert and Alcides Escobar combined to drive in five runs as Kansas City held off Houston.

Cuthbert, Escobar, Ramon Torres and Salvador Perez had two hits apiece for the Royals. The Astros scored three runs (two unearned) in the eighth inning to cut into Kansas City's five-run advantage.

Kelvin Herrera worked around a Brian McCann single in the ninth to pick up his 13th save. McCann had four of Houston's 11 hits, including a home run. Astros starter Dallas Keuchel (illness) was a game-time scratch.

                              Rockies 8, Indians 1

DENVER -- Nolan Arenado struck out four times Tuesday, but rebounded a day later, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs to help Colorado sweep the two-game series with Cleveland.

The Rockies have outscored opponents 32-6 while winning four straight. They are a season-high 15 games above .500 (38-23) and have a series record of 14-3-3. The loss was the fifth in seven games for the Indians.

Rookie left-hander Kyle Freeland (7-3) got his ninth quality start by pitching 6 1/3 innings and holding Cleveland scoreless until the seventh when Jose Ramirez hit his eighth home run.

                              Brewers 6, Giants 3

MILWAUKEE -- Home runs from Domingo Santana and Jonathan Villar backed a six-strikeout effort from Jimmy Nelson as Milwaukee rallied past San Francisco.

Nelson (4-3) held the Giants to three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings. He is 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA over his past seven starts. Corey Knebel struck out two in the ninth inning to earn his seventh save.

Ty Blach (4-3) went six innings for San Francisco, allowing five runs on nine hits. He didn't walk a batter for the third time in his past four starts, and he struck out three.

                              Marlins 6, Cubs 5

CHICAGO -- JT Riddle went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead two-run single in the fourth inning as Miami salvaged the finale of a three-game series.

John Lackey (4-6) suffered his third straight loss as the Cubs saw their five-game winning streak snapped. Kyle Schwarber went 3-for-4, including a home run and double for Chicago.

                              Mets 4, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Jay Bruce homered twice and New York squeezed across a run in the ninth to beat Texas.

With runners at first and second in the ninth against Rangers closer Matt Bush, Jose Reyes sent a bouncing ball up the middle. Texas second baseman Rougned Odor fielded it on the outfield grass behind the base and hurriedly bounced a throw to Elvis Andrus covering second.

The shortstop appeared to trap the ball, but it slipped out and pinch runner Matt Reynolds never slowed down on his way home from second. The Rangers' Yu Darvish struck out nine and allowed three hits and three runs in 7 1/3 innings.

                              Tigers 4, Angels 0

DETROIT -- Buck Farmer pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings as he outdueled Alex Meyer and led Detroit to victory.

Farmer, recalled from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day, collected his second straight victory after going winless in the previous three seasons, spanning 32 appearances and eight starts. Braves 14, Phillies 1

ATLANTA -- Mike Foltynewicz turned in seven scoreless innings for the second straight start and Atlanta provided him with its biggest offensive explosion of the season in defeating Philadelphia.

Nick Markakis drove in five runs with three doubles and Dansby Swanson hit a three-run homer as part of a three-hit game as the Braves snapped the Phillies' four-game winning streak. Atlanta scored four runs in the seventh inning and sixth in the eighth.

Foltynewicz (4-5) allowed four hits, walked two and struck out four in a follow-up to a dominant performance at Cincinnati on Friday, when he yielded two hits while striking out 10 and walking two.

                              Reds 6, Cardinals 4

CINCINNATI -- Patrick Kivlehan tied the score with a pinch-hit, three-run homer and Joey Votto's go-ahead, two-run shot capped a five-run seventh inning as Cincinnati defeated St. Louis.

Cincinnati's Scooter Gennett, coming off his historic four-homer night Tuesday, went 1-for-4.

Matt Carpenter homered for St. Louis, which has lost six straight for the first time since 2013. It was the 14th time this season the Cardinals have led by two or more runs and lost.

                              Rays 3, White Sox 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Jacob Faria earned his first major league win in his debut as Tampa Bay shut down Chicago.

White Sox starter Mike Pelfrey (2-5) labored through 5 1/3 innings but managed to pitch himself out of trouble on most occasions and held the Rays to 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position to keep the game close.

                              Blue Jays 7, Athletics 5 (10 innings)

Toronto's Roberto Osuna gave up a run in the bottom of the 10th but got his 14th save of the season. Rajai Davis went 4-for-5 for the Athletics.

                                — Bob Stoops resigned after 18 years as Oklahoma’s football coach; 33-year old Lincoln Riley will be the Sooners’ coach this fall.

                                — Orioles 9, Pirates 6 (11)— Trey Mancini didn’t play until the 9th inning, but he knocked in five runs with two homers in two at-bats and Baltimore got a walk-off win here.

Thursday’s List of 13: Some early college football knowledge…….

I went grocery shopping the other day; first thing I bought was a college football magazine. Here are some of the things I learned from that magazine……

                                13) There were 21 head coaching changes this offseason, including Texas-Oregon-Baylor.

                                12) Michigan State went from +14 in turnovers in 2015 to -5 last year, and the Spartans slipped to 3-9; the bounce of the ball can be fickle.

                                11) Michigan has a +9.1 yard advantage in field position, best in the country; they forced 3/outs on 34% of opponents’ drives last year.

                                10) Kansas has lost 41 straight road games; their last win on foreign soil was at Texas-El Paso in 2009. At least they’re not paying Charlie Weis anymore.

                                9) LSU scored an average of 37.9 pts/game in its eight wins, 9.3 in its four losses. Still think that firing Les Miles was a bad move for them.

                                8) Louisville averaged 7.2 yards per play last year, but has only four starters back on offense. Luckily for them, one of the four is QB Lamar Jackson. Oklahoma (7.5) was the only team in the country to average more yards per play.

                                7) Arkansas allowed 7.9 yards per play in SEC games, the worst of any team in the country in their conference games.

                                6) Difference between college football and college basketball; Athlon has 27 guys on its 1st team All-American football team (offense/defense/specialists)— three sophomores, 12 juniors, 12 seniors.

In basketball, the top two teams of consensus All-Americans: two freshmen, two sophomore, four juniors, only two seniors.

                                5) Average yards per play in college football last year was 5.8. Last time Wake Forest averaged more than 5.2 yards per play was 2009.

                                4) Tulsa ran the ball for 10+ yards on 103 plays LY, compared to 60 the year before, a big part of why scored 5.3 pts/game more than in 2015 ad increased their win total from six to 10.

                                3) West Virginia has only three starters back on defense; 59% of their tackles last year were by seniors. Mountaineers going to have to score a lot more points to compete this season.

                                2) By way of comparison, freshmen/sophomores made 52% of Oregon’s tackles, part of why they forced only 12 turnovers, but they should improve this season with those players returning and hopefully improving under a new coaching staff.

                                1) Washington Huskies covered their games last year by an average of 8.9 points per game, best in the country. Arizona failed to cover its games by an average of 10 points per game.
