Hottest team: Padres (5-0 past five games, 8-3 past 11 overall)

The Padres knocked off German Marquez and the Rockies in Friday's series opener at Petco Park to pick up their fifth consecutive victory. They'll look to stay hot against Tyler Chatwood, a pitcher who allowed a season-high six runs with seven hits in a loss against the Mariners on Monday. However, Chatwood did carry a no-hitter into the sixth inning the last time he faced the Padres on May 2 in San Diego, and he has a 3-1 career record at Petco. Jhoulys Chacin will look to vanquish his former team. He is 2-0 with a 0.67 ERA and .132 opponent batting average in each of his past two starts at home.

Coldest team Phillies (0-5 past five games, 6-26 past 32 overall)

The Phillies continue to struggle, and it's getting worse before it gets better. After getting swept in Miami while being outscored 21-5, they came home and were trampled by Ty Blach and the Giants by a 10-0 count on Friday. The Phillies have allowed seven or more runs in seven of the past 11 games, and nine of the past 16. That has helped the 'over' come in rather frequently, too, so remember that when hitting the window. The 'over' is 3-0 in the past three, and 9-5-2 over the past 16 outings. They'll be facing an uphill battle against Johnny Cueto, as the Giants are 18-3 over his past 21 outings against a team with a losing overall record.

Hottest pitcher: Ervin Santana, Twins (7-2, 1.75 ERA)

Santana has had a scintillating season so far, posting a 1.75 ERA through 11 outings with an amazing .140 opponent batting average and microscopic 0.84 WHIP. He has allowed just 36 hits through 77 innings, and will now focus his attention on his former organization. Santana posted a career-high 17 victories in 2010 as a member of the Angels, and he won 96 games over eight seasons from 2005-12 before moving on to Kansas City in 2013. The Twins are 4-0 in Santana's past four road outings and 6-0 in his past six against teams with a losing record. He'll be facing an Angels lineup missing Mike Trout (thumb) and Cameron Maybin (oblique).

Coldest pitcher: Jordan Zimmermann, Tigers (4-4, 6.47 ERA)

Zimmermann has been shelled for 40 earned runs across 55 2/3 innings this season, serving up 16 homers with 17 walks and just 34 strikeouts while the opposition is humming along to the tune of a .308 average. His 1.56 WHIP is well above his career mark of just 1.19, and his ERA is nearly three runs higher than his career line of 3.59. He has dropped three of his past four outings and he finished May with a 1-3 mark and 6.75 ERA over 28 innings in five outings. The Tigers are 1-5 in Zimmermann's past six against divisional foes and 1-6 in his past seven against teams with a losing overall mark.

Biggest UNDER run: Mariners (6-2-2 past 10 games overall)

The 'over' hit in Friday's series opener against the Rays, as Tampa Bay piled up 12 runs. However, the 'under' has been the play in Seattle's past 10 outings. They lost table-setter Jean Segura and his then league-leading .341 batting average this week, so that's going to wreak havoc on their offense while helping the 'under' continue to come in. The under is 6-2-2 in Seattle's past 10 against teams with a winning overall record and 4-1 in their past five against American League East foes, too. The under is also 3-1-1 in their past five vs. RHP.

Biggest OVER run: Pirates (7-2-1 past 10 games overall)

The 'over' has been a frequent occurrence for the Bucs lately, including each of their past four on the road. They kicked off their road trip with a 12-7 win at N.Y. Mets on Friday for another 'over', and the over is 3-0-1 in four meetings with the Mets this season. The Pirates haven't gotten good performances from Tyler Glasnow, and they're 1-4 in his past five outings. The over has hit in each of his past four road outings, and is 7-0-2 in his past nine overall. The over is also 7-1-1 in Pittsburgh's past nine against right-handed pitching while going 6-0-1 in their past seven against teams with a losing overall mark.

Matchup to watch: Orioles vs. Red Sox

David Price takes the hill for the Red Sox against Dylan Bundy of the Orioles in a pitching matchup that looks great on paper. Price will be making his second start of the season after start the year on the disabled list due to an elbow strain. he allowed three runs and two hits with two walks over five innings in a no-decision at Chicago White Sox on Monday in his season debut. He was solid against Baltimore last season, going 3-1 with a 3.71 ERA across five starts. He carries an 11-5 record and 2.88 ERA in his career against the O's. Bundy might be tired of facing the BoSox, as he faces them for the fourth time this season. He is 2-1 with a 2.21 ERA in his first three outings, and he is 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA across 40 1/3 innings across six outings in Oriole Park at Camden Yards this season.

Betcha didn’t know: Albert Pujols of the Angels is looking to become the ninth member of the 600-home run club. He'll look to make history against Santana, the former Angels pitcher. Pujols is 3-for-12 with a home run, two RBI and three strikeouts with a .808 OPS in his brief dealings against the right-hander. Since the start of the 2014 season Santana has faced the Halos just twice, going 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA over 13 innings with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-170) vs. Cardinals

Biggest public underdog: Yankees (+135) at Blue Jays

Biggest line move: White Sox (+155 to +130) at Tigers

            • Royals' Hammel faces only team he has beaten in 2017
              June 3, 2017

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jason Hammel has one win in 10 starts this year for the Kansas City Royals.

That came May 6 when he allowed one run in six innings against the Cleveland Indians at Kauffman Stadium.

Hammel will face the Indians again Saturday at home. Cleveland will counter with hard-throwing right-hander Carlos Carrasco.

"I faced them earlier this year and fared well, Hammel said. I'll go back and watch the video and see what I did well that night and what I didn't do well and we'll go from there.

While it has been three weeks since he has faced the Tribe, Hammel is not fond of seeing the same team over and over.

"Honestly, no, especially when it's very close together, like the Yankees for me, two out of my last three," Hammel said. "The first time you face a team, the pitcher has the advantage when you don't know what the game plan is. The second time around and see what the approach was the previous game.

"It's fun. It's a game of cat and mouse all year. You kind of wait and see who blinks first and then you make an adjustment."

Hammel was charged with four runs, four hits and four walks in a no-decision in a 10-7 Kansas City loss Monday to the Detroit Tigers.

"Stop the walks," Hammel said is a priority. "I think my strikeout ratio is pretty close to what it's always been. The problem with the strikeouts this year is when I've been able to get to two strikes, which I've been able to do, it's just the execution.

"Obviously, walks I've got to eliminate those and with two strikes I've got to be better. I've given up way too many hits in counts where I was ahead of the hitter."

Hammel is 1-6 with a 6.18 ERA this season after winning 15 games for the Chicago Cubs last season.

"I'm not really worried about it honestly," Hammel said. "We're two months into this. There's still four months of baseball left. I've been in this thing long enough. The last couple of outings, I've felt really good. It's disappointing with the way the line reads for me right now. I'm working hard to get it right.

"I'm very relaxed. A couple of times this year I've had a lead and given it right back. I put too much pressure on myself to have a shutdown inning, put up a zero there, instead of coming out and doing what I had been doing the few innings before.

"It's staying aggressive in the strike zone, force them to make a comeback and not allow them opportunities to do that."

Hammel is 1-3 with a 4.75 ERA in 10 career outings against the Indians. He is 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA in six home starts this season.

Carrasco, who can crank up a fastball in the mid-to-upper 90s mph, pitches the day after Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin gets hitters out with an 87-88 mph fastball.

Going from one extreme to another in a short span could make it difficult for a hitter to adjust

"I would say that's more of a starter than to a reliever," Francona. "Say Tomlin is starting and (Zach) McAllister is coming in. I think the contrast is something I definitely feel can help.

"I don't know about the next day. You have your four or five at-bats that night and you're into watching the pitcher kind of getting into what he's throwing and then you can change it up as a reliever. I don't know about the next day. It could be. I just don't know."

Royals designated hitter Brandon Moss knows facing Carrasco is no easy task.

"I know Carlos very well, playing over there," Moss said. "That's pure stuff. He's going to throw 95-96 with that sinker. He's got the curveball and the changeup. The opposite with him is making him work and hoping he puts us base for free and then you make him pay.

"Guys with stuff like he has are throwing strikes and they're commanding the strike zone, you don't string a lot of hits together. You don't beat them with hits. You let them beat themselves.

"That's what we've got to do to. The name of the game is figuring a pitcher out and making him work."

Carrasco is 7-5 with a 3.40 ERA in his career against the Royals. This is his first start this season against Kansas City. He last started July 20, 2016, at Kauffman Stadium, throwing six scoreless innings and yielding just one hit in a win.

He is 4-0 with a 2.18 ERA on the road this year.

Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas is 2-for-15 (.133) against Carrasco, and Alex Gordon is 4-for-26 (.154), but two hits cleared the wall. Lorenzo Cain is 8-for-25 (.320) and Salvador Perez is 6-for-23 (.261). Eric Hosmer is 7-for-24 (.292).

                  June 3, 2017

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Albert Pujols hit a grand slam for his 600th homer, becoming the ninth member of the club during the fourth inning of the Los Angeles Angels' 7-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night.

Pujols reached the milestone in theatrical style, putting a low pitch from Ervin Santana (7-3) into Angel Stadium's short left-field porch for his 14th grand slam. He became the fourth-youngest player to reach the 600-homer club - and the first to join it with a slam. The Anaheim crowd roared while fireworks soared overhead for the 37-year-old's ninth homer of the season and his 155th for the Angels.

The Dominican veteran is the first player to hit his 600th homer since Jim Thome in August 2011. With his ninth homer this season, Pujols has joined the club with Bonds (762), Aaron (755), Ruth (714), Rodriguez (696), Willie Mays (660), Ken Griffey Jr. (630), Thome (612) and Sammy Sosa (609).

Andrelton Simmons and Kole Calhoun hit back-to-back homers in the third inning for the Angels. Matt Shoemaker (5-3) pitched five-hit ball into the seventh inning for his fourth victory in his last five starts.

                  Max Kepler homered for Minnesota.

                  MARLINS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Edinson Volquez threw the sixth no-hitter in Marlins history, facing the minimum 27 batters and beating the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Volquez (2-7) struck out 10, and the two baserunners who reached on walks were erased by double plays. He needed 98 pitches, the last of those striking out Chris Owings to complete the masterpiece. It was the Marlins' first no-hitter since Henderson Alvarez pitched one against Detroit on the final day of the 2013 regular season.

It's the first no-hitter in the majors this season, and the first time Arizona was no-hit since the Marlins' Anibal Sanchez threw one on Sept. 6, 2006. Volquez was nearly knocked out of the game after only three pitches, when he collided with Diamondbacks leadoff man Rey Fuentes as he covered first and rolled his ankle. But the 33-year-old righty from the Dominican Republic stayed in.

Randall Delgado (1-1) gave up six hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings for Arizona.

                  ASTROS 6, RANGERS 5

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Carlos Beltran had three hits and drove in three runs as the Houston Astros extended their major league-best winning streak to nine in a row. Jose Altuve also had three hits for Houston, including a key solo homer to lead off the ninth.

At 40-16, the Astros have the best record in the majors and their best start in franchise history. They are 14 games ahead in the AL West over two-time defending division champion Texas, which is 3-10 since a 10-game winning streak that is still the longest in the majors this season.

Chris Devenski (4-3) worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings after taking over for Lance McCullers in the fifth. Ken Giles worked the ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances even while allowing an RBI single by Adrian Beltre.

Andrew Cashner (2-5) took the loss.

                  RED SOX 5, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - David Price took a three-hitter into the eighth inning to earn his first win of the season, Hanley Ramirez homered and drove in three runs for the Boston Red Sox.

Price (1-0) allowed one run over seven-plus innings in his second start since coming off the disabled list with a strained left elbow. After belatedly launching his 2017 season with an uneven outing against the White Sox on Monday, Price looked every bit like a five-time All-Star against Baltimore. The left-hander gave up three hits, struck out seven and did not allow a runner past first base until Manny Machado led off the seventh with a home run.

Craig Kimbrel gave up a ninth-inning run, but picked up his 16th save.

Dylan Bundy (6-4) took the loss.

                  YANKEES 7, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Brett Gardner, Matt Holliday, Starlin Castro and Didi Gregorius all hit solo home runs in the eighth inning, leading Jordan Montgomery and the New York Yankees over the Blue Jays.

The Yankees tied the franchise record with four homers in an inning. Gardner led it off with a home run and then with two outs, Holliday, Castro and Gregorius connected in succession. Jason Grilli became the first reliever in Blue Jays history to allow four homers in a single inning.

This was the fourth time the Yankees have hit four homers in an inning - they last did it Oct. 1, 2012, against Boston. They first did it in 1977 at Toronto, with Cliff Johnson connecting twice and Lou Piniella and Thurman Munson once each.

Montgomery (3-4) gave up three singles in six innings for his first win since May 6 against the Cubs. Joe Biagini (1-4) allowed three runs in a career-high seven innings.

                  CUBS 5, CARDINALS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Slumping Kyle Schwarber hit his first career grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally the Cubs to a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Schwarber, who entered batting .163 and was dropped to the ninth spot in the lineup, hit the first pitch of the at-bat from St. Louis starter Mike Leake (5-4) deep into the bleachers in left-center. Javier Baez also homered for Chicago, which has won two straight following a six-game losing streak.

Hector Rondon (1-1) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win. Wade Davis got the final three outs for his 12th save.

Yadier Molina homered and Jose Martinez had two RBIs for the Cardinals.

                  BRAVES 6, REDS 5, 12 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Matt Adams hit his first career grand slam and connected again for a solo shot in the 12th inning, powering the Atlanta Braves to a victory over the Cincinnati Reds that ended their three-game losing streak.

Adams' one-out homer off Blake Wood (0-4) saved the Braves after they blew a lead for the second day in a row. It was Adams' fourth career multi-homer game, his first since 2014.

Jim Johnson (3-1) escaped a threat in the 11th and finished it off for the win, a day after he blew a lead in the ninth. The Reds rallied for a 3-2 lead in 10 innings on Friday night. The Braves won for only the second time in seven extra-inning games this season.

                  ATHLETICS 10, NATIONALS 4

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Ryon Healy had two doubles and two homers, Jed Lowrie doubled twice and homered, and the Athletics beat the Washington Nationals.

A day after being outscored by 10 runs, the A's got off to a fast start as Healy and Lowrie each hit two-run homers in the bottom of the first inning off starter Joe Ross (2-2). Healy also hit a long solo shot in a three-run seventh inning in which the A's broke open a 7-4 game. It was Healy's first career multi-home run game and the four extra-base hits tied a franchise record accomplished by 16 others since 1913.

Yonder Alonso hit a two-run homer - his 16th - earlier in the seventh. Adam Lind homered for the Nationals.

Liam Hendriks (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.

                  ROYALS 12, INDIANS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Lorenzo Cain capped a six-run fifth inning with a two-run homer, Jason Hammel settled down after a shaky start and the Royals routed the Cleveland Indians.

Whit Merrifield and Mike Moustakas had two-run doubles off Carlos Carrasco (5-3) during the Royals' big inning, helping them overcome a 3-0 hole and ensure a series win over their division rival.

Hammel (2-6) gave up homers to Carlos Santana and Bradley Zimmer in the third, but he retired 15 of his next 17 batters before giving way to Mike Minor with two outs in the seventh. Hammel struck out seven without a walk for his first win since beating Cleveland on May 5.

                  PHILLIES 5, GIANTS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ben Lively pitched seven strong innings in his major league debut, Odubel Herrera drove in three runs in Philadelphia's four-run seventh and the Phillies held on against the San Francisco Giants.

Tommy Joseph homered for the Phillies, who snapped a five-game losing streak while winning for just the seventh time in their last 33 games. Philadelphia avoided losing its 11th straight series, which hasn't happened since the 1941 club did it.

Lively (1-0) became the first Phillies starter to earn a victory since Jeremy Hellickson on April 27 by allowing one run and four hits with three walks and no strikeouts.

Johnny Cueto (5-5) took the loss, allowing three runs in six innings.

                  METS 4, PIRATES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Neil Walker hit a two-run homer against his former team and the New York Mets also got long balls from Jay Bruce and Wilmer Flores in beating the Pittsburgh Pirates to stop a three-game slide.

Robert Gsellman (4-3) won his second consecutive start - likely his last before a move to the bullpen. The rookie right-hander tossed 5 1/3 effective innings before Fernando Salas escaped a first-and-third jam, and New York's shaky relief corps nailed one down for a change. Jerry Blevins worked around an error in a scoreless seventh, and manager Terry Collins called on Addison Reed to get the final six outs. The substitute closer, filling in for injured Jeurys Familia, pitched out of trouble for his eighth save in 10 chances.

Pittsburgh rookie Josh Bell homered for the second straight game, and streaking Jordy Mercer doubled twice among his three hits. But the Pirates stranded 12 runners, and rookie starter Tyler Glasnow (2-5) lost to the Mets for the second time in seven days

                  TIGERS 10, WHITE SOX 1

DETROIT (AP) - Jordan Zimmermann tossed six solid innings and the Tigers used four home runs to power past the Chicago White Sox.

Nicholas Castellanos and Alex Presley hit back-to-back homers in the second inning, and Alex Avila and Justin Upton also homered for the Tigers, who have outscored Chicago 25-6 in the first two games of the weekend series.

Zimmermann (5-4) won for the second time in six starts, allowing one run and seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Detroit has won four of five.

Miguel Gonzalez (4-6) lost his fifth straight road start, giving up six runs and 10 hits in six innings, including three of Detroit's homers. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was ejected in the bottom of the first inning after he wasn't allowed to challenge a play at first base.

                  ROCKIES 10, PADRES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Nolan Arenado hit his 14th homer, Ian Desmond added a grand slam and the Colorado Rockies stopped the Padres' season-high, five-game winning streak.

Tyler Chatwood (5-7) rebounded from his worst start of the season, allowing four hits over eight innings with eight strikeouts and one walk. Chatwood also had a pair of hits as the Rockies won for just the second time in six games. Jordan Lyles pitched a perfect the ninth. In his previous outing, Chatwood gave up six runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to Seattle.

Former Rockies righty Jhoulys Chacin (4-5) allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits in five innings, losing for the first time this year in five starts at home. The Padres had been on their longest winning streak since August 2015; they have not won six straight since June 2013.

                  DODGERS 10, BREWERS 8

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Chris Taylor hit a go-ahead grand slam off Carlos Torres in a five-run ninth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied late for the second straight day to beat the Brewers.

Los Angeles led 4-3 in the seventh when Chris Hatcher walked the bases loaded and Josh Fields relieved. Travis Shaw drove Fields' third pitch over the fence in left-center, and Hernan Perez homered two pitches later for an 8-4 lead.

The Dodgers loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Torres (2-4). Corey Seager walked, and Yasmani Grandal hit a grounder to first baseman Jesus Aguilar, who threw to second trying for a forceout and hit Seager on the back for an error. Pinch-hitter Austin Barnes walked, Cody Bellinger walked to force in a run and Taylor homered off the batters' eye behind the center-field fence.

                  MARINERS 9, RAYS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Mike Zunino hit his first grand slam and drove in a career-high seven runs to power the Mariners past the Tampa Bay Rays.

Zunino, sent down to Triple-A Tacoma for two weeks in May after struggling offensively, had a two-run double in the second, an RBI single in the fourth, and capped a five-run fifth with his slam that put the Mariners up 9-1.

Rookie right-hander Sam Gaviglio (2-1) allowed one run - a homer by Corey Dickerson to lead off the game - and four hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked none in his fourth start since being called up May 10.

Alex Cobb (4-5) was rocked for nine runs and 14 hits in five innings.

Nelson Cruz had three hits, including a solo homer, and Danny Valencia had four singles and scored three times for the Mariners, who won for the sixth time in seven games.

                    ***********************************

Sunday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a spring Sunday……

                    13) Edinson Volquez was in a nasty-looking collision while covering first base in the first inning Saturday- it was the first batter of the game. Who knew he would go on to no-hit Arizona, in a very gutty performance- he walked only two batters in a 3-0 Miami win. Impressive.

Volquez threw 98 pitches, the first no-hitter with less than 100 pitches since Philip Humber’s perfect game five years ago.

                    12) Scalpers in Nashville were charging very high prices for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals, the first NHL finals game in Predators’ history; as of 2pm Saturday, cheapest seat in the sold-out house was being scalped for $1,200.

                    11) Phil Mickelson is skipping the US Open to attend his daughter’s high school graduation. His daughter is giving the commencement address at her graduation— she is going to college at Brown University in the fall, which is a long way from her San Diego home.

                    10) Wish they’d put the World Series of Poker back on ESPN; the events have started out in Las Vegas already— watching poker was lot better than most of the drivel ESPN has on now during late night and daytime hours.

                    9) There is actually a movie called I Spit on Your Grave, which must’ve done well at the box office, since they’ve made two sequels. Think I’ll pass on all three of them.

                    8) Aaron Rodgers’ last 18 games against the Vikings: (12-6 W-L record); he’s thrown 40 TD’s with only six INT’s.

                    7) Good news for people who watch baseball on the dish; Hawk Harrelson is retiring— he will work White Sox games on Sunday next year, but otherwise, Jason Benetti will be the voice of the White Sox, which is great news, because Benetti is really good and Harrelson isn’t— he is the old guy yelling at kids to get off his lawn.

I liked The Hawk when he worked Red Sox games on WSBK in the late 70’s/early 80’s, but now he crabs about the umpires and yearns for the good ol’ days way too much.

                    6) Last year in the NFL, Bucs’ WR Mike Evans was targeted 39 times on passes of 20+ yards, most in the league. Next-highest were TY Hilton (33) and Terrell Pryor (32).

                    5) If you pinch-run in a game, it doesn’t count as a game played, unless you stay in the game. So if Cal Ripken had just pinch-run in a game during his great streak, it would’ve ended the streak. If you pinch-hit, the streak is extended, but not if you pinch-run.

                    4) Albert Pujols made his 600th home run a big one– he hit a grand slam in the 4th inning Saturday night, giving the Angels a 7-1 lead.

Pujols is just the 9th big leaguer to hit 600 home runs.

A 30-ish fan in LF bleachers caught Pujols’ grand slam; they put him on TV for half an inning, but the guy seemed like he was hyperventilating he was so excited- he didn’t have a lot to say. Wonder if he was thinking about what he was going to ask Pujols for, in exchange for the 600th home run baseball.

Two innings later, Angels unveiled the Pujols 600th home run bobblehead they’re giving away on July 1st. I’d ask for one of those, for a start.

                    3) Garrett Cole is the Pirates’ best pitcher; they’re 6-6 in his starts this year, but a closer look shows that if you bet the Pirates in a “first 5 innings” bet in his starts, you’d be 1-9-2- they’ve led only one of his 12 starts after five innings. Was very surprised to see that.

                    2) Red Sox entered Saturday hitting .213 as a team when they have two strikes on them; that is the best two-strike batting average of any major league team. Important for pitchers to get ahead in the count.

                    1) Friday afternoon, former big leaguer Luis Gonzalez helped pull a woman from a car that was in an accident and was next to another car that was in flames. Good for him.

Gonzalez got the game-winning hit in the clinching game of the 2001 World Series for the Diamondbacks.

                      • MLB notebook: Yanks shut down Ellsbury as headaches return
                        June 3, 2017

The New York Yankees shut down center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury on Saturday after he began experiencing post-concussion headaches again.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters before Saturday's game against in Toronto that Ellsbury will shut down all athletic activity and visit a neurologist next week when the team returns to New York.

"Sometimes it's tough when you have a concussion," Girardi said before the game against the Blue Jays. "You have to be careful. You have to do the right thing. I know he's frustrated. He wants to come back."

Ellsbury sustained a concussion on May 24 when his head banged against the center field wall at Yankee Stadium. The next day, he was placed on the disabled list because of a concussion and a neck sprain.

The 33-year-old Ellsbury was set to take batting practice Friday, but the headaches returned.

Ellsbury is batting .281 with four home runs, 14 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 39 games.

--The Kansas City Royals optioned slumping outfielder Jorge Soler to Triple-A Omaha.

In a corresponding move, the Royals recalled outfielder Billy Burns ahead of Saturday's game against the Cleveland Indians.

Soler was acquired by the Royals in a December trade that sent closer Wade Davis to the Chicago Cubs.

The 25-year-old Cuban, who spent time on the disabled list earlier this year because of a strained oblique, is batting .164 with one home run and three RBIs in 18 games for the Royals this season.

Burns, 27, is hitting .246 with two doubles, a triple and 13 stolen bases in 39 games for Omaha this season.

--The Chicago White Sox placed right-handed relief pitcher Michael Ynoa on the 10-day disabled list because of a right hip flexor strain.

The team also recalled right-hander Brad Goldberg from Triple-A Charlotte prior to Saturday's game at Detroit.

Ynoa, 25, is 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA over 20 2/3 innings with 19 strikeouts and a .225 opponents average in 16 relief outings this season. He pitched to two batters in the White Sox's 15-5 loss to the Tigers on Friday night before leaving the game because of the injury.

Goldberg, 27, is 2-1 with a 1.99 ERA, four saves and 22 strikeouts in 17 relief appearances with Charlotte.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Goldberg has pitched 10 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings over his last eight outings, limiting opponents to a .167 average with 11 strikeouts. He has no major league experience.

                        • LEADING OFF: Sale faces Machado, Stroman sees slugging Yanks
                          June 3, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

                          EASY DOES IT

Red Sox ace Chris Sale faces the Orioles for the first time since throwing a fastball behind the legs of Baltimore star Manny Machado last month. The incident escalated the feud between the teams, led to warnings for both clubs and got Machado and Sale chirping after the game. They meet this time at Camden Yards.

                          JUST RELAX

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell could return to the lineup for this night-time matchup vs. St. Louis at Wrigley Field. Manager Joe Maddon didn't start Russell on Saturday, giving him a break to clear his mind. Russell later grounded out as a pinch hitter and is batting .211, without a hit in his last four games.

                          NOT YOUR FATHER'S PIRATES

Tyler Pill makes his second major league start for the Mets in their series finale against Pittsburgh. Pill's father, Michael, was drafted in the second round by the Pirates and pitched in their minor league system from 1977-79. The younger Pill lost in relief during his big league debut last weekend at Pittsburgh but then started Tuesday against Milwaukee and tossed 5 1/3 effective innings in a no-decision. ''Never gives in. Has the ability to make a pitch when he really, really has to,'' New York manager Terry Collins said. With starters Steven Matz and Seth Lugo expected to come off the disabled list in a few days, the 27-year-old Pill could soon be headed back to the minors. So this might represent his last shot at a major league win - at least for a while.

                          POWERED UP

Marcus Stroman is 5-0 with a 2.96 ERA in his past eight starts for the Blue Jays, and hasn't lost since April 18. He'll face a Yankees team that broke loose in the eighth Saturday at Toronto to hit four home runs, tying the franchise record for most homers in an inning.

                          ENCORE, ENCORE

Vance Worley starts for Miami, a day after teammate Edinson Volquez pitched the first no-hitter in the majors this year. Volquez was tied for the big league lead in losses when he faced Arizona. Worley is 0-2 going into this game against the visiting Diamondbacks.

                          YOU AGAIN?

Giants star Buster Posey has a 17-game hitting streak against the Phillies dating to July 24, 2014. He extended the string with a single Saturday in Philadelphia.

                          • Trout won't change playing style despite first major injury
                            June 3, 2017

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Mike Trout has no plans to stop sliding headfirst, even after it caused the first major injury of his baseball career.

The Los Angeles Angels slugger said Saturday that he won't change his aggressive baserunning style despite tearing a ligament in his left thumb last weekend in Miami, sending the two-time AL MVP to the disabled list for the first time.

Trout experimented with sliding feet-first during spring training, but felt more comfortable with the approach he has used since he first started playing baseball. He also plans to keep diving to make catches in the outfield, believing he can't play with caution.

''I want to be able to go out there and not think about it, just go out there and play,'' Trout said at Angel Stadium during his first public comment since the surgery. ''I play the game hard. I think when you start thinking about risk of injury, that's when you get hurt, so for me I want to go out there and play pain-free. Obviously, it's going to be a little sore here and there, but I can't think about it in the outfield just diving.''

Trout had surgery for the first time Wednesday. When the cast comes off his left hand and wrist on Monday, Trout will begin rehabilitation from a major injury for the first time.

Trout doesn't exactly know what to expect during his projected six-to-eight week recovery from an injury he suffered while stealing a base against the Marlins, but he gave plenty of indications he will approach it with the same relentlessness that has made him one of the best in the game.

''I'm curious and I'm ready to go,'' Trout said. ''Just want to get this thing right.''

Whether Trout will be right in time to play in the 2017 All-Star Game isn't clear. Trout received the most votes of any American League player in the first round of balloting, but conceded he would have to recover at least one week ahead of the most-optimistic timetable to be available to play in his sixth consecutive All-Star Game on July 9 in Miami.

''It would be pretty quick to get back, you know, that time, but it will be a goal for sure,'' Trout said.

Whenever Trout does return to action, he will do so with a protective guard inside his batting glove to prevent a similar injury. Trout used a similar device when he sprained his pinkie finger two years ago, the only previous incident he could recall related to his preference for sliding headfirst.

Trout admitted he was nervous and felt ''pretty weird'' before undergoing surgery despite receiving scouting reports from teammate Andrelton Simmons, who had the same procedure last season, and Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul, who has had his thumb operated on twice. Trout also elected to have a stabilizing brace inserted into his thumb, believing it will be the best option for him over the long term.

''Obviously, Sim had the same thing and he's back to 100 percent,'' Trout said.

Feeling 100 percent everywhere except in his hand is what Trout is having the most trouble reconciling during his absence, though he attended every home game this week in hopes of seeing Albert Pujols hit his 600th career home run and could travel with the team during their upcoming East Coast trip.

''I've never torn anything or broke anything ever,'' Trout said. ''It's just frustrating. You want to be out there, you know, cause the rest of my body feels good. Just my thumb doesn't work.''

                            • Pujols hits 600th home run
                              June 4, 2017

Albert Pujols of the Los Angeles Angels became the ninth player in major league history to reach 600 home runs -- and the first to do it with a grand slam -- against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

Pujols belted a 1-2 pitch from Minnesota ace Ervin Santana in the fourth inning to give Los Angeles a 7-1 lead. Pujols put a long, looping swing on the low pitch, and he briefly stood at the plate to see whether the ball would stay fair. When it did, he rounded the bases as fireworks exploded before greeting his excited teammates at home plate.

Only Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755), Hank Aaron (714), Alex Rodriguez (696), Willie Mays (660), Ken Griffey Jr. (630), Jim Thome (612) and Sammy Sosa (609) have hit more home runs than the 37-year-old Pujols
