  • MLB notebook: Mariners' Segura, Cruz leave game with injuries
    June 1, 2017

Seattle Mariners shortstop Jean Segura and designated hitter Nelson Cruz both left Thursday's game against the Colorado Rockies with injuries.

Cruz, who entered play as the American League leader in RBIs with 42, was hit by a pitch on the left hand from Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland in the third inning.

Segura, who began the day as the AL's leading hitter with a .344 batting average, was injured on an awkward slide into second base in the fourth inning.

After staying down for more than a minute, Segura was helped off the field by assistant athletic trainer Rob Nodine and first-base coach Casey Candaele.

The Mariners announced Segura was undergoing further examination on his right ankle.

--The Miami Marlins have established a trust for the mother and daughter of former ace Jose Fernandez via a $700,000 contribution from Major League Baseball, the Miami Herald reported.

Fernandez, who was a two-time All-Star pitcher, was killed along with two others in an early morning boating accident on Sept. 25.

The league allocates $1 million to a team should one of its players die. However, the insurance company responsible for those payments did not issue the full amount. The company's reasoning stems from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission concluding that Fernandez had been operating the boat at the time of the crash with a blood-alcohol level of .147 and traces of cocaine in his system. The sides settled on a $700,000 figure.

Marlins president David Samson said that the trust will be used to pay for the education of Fernandez's 3-month-old daughter, Penelope. The money will also be provided to ensure that her mother, Maria Arias, is able to finish any schooling free of debt. Fernandez's mother, Maritza, also will receive an annual sum via the trust.

--The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Grant Dayton from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed fellow left-hander Adam Liberatore on the 10-day disabled list with left forearm tightness.

Dayton has posted a 1-1 mark with a 5.25 ERA in 14 games with the Dodgers this season. Liberatore is making his second trip to the disabled list this season after being sidelined from May 10-25 with a left groin strain. The 30-year-old has yet to record a decision while compiling a 2.70 ERA in four relief appearances with Los Angeles.

--The Cleveland Indians activated Corey Kluber from the disabled list and optioned fellow right-hander Shawn Armstrong to Triple-A Columbus.

Kluber, who has been sidelined since exiting a game due to lower back soreness on May 2, pitched six scoreless innings in the Indians 8-0 victory over the Oakland A's Thursday afternoon.

--The Toronto Blue Jays recalled right-handed reliever Leonel Campos from Triple-A Buffalo and designated right-hander Mike Bolsinger for assignment.

Bolsinger (0-2) pitched 5 1/3 innings and received a no-decision in the 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.

Campos is 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA in four relief appearances with Toronto this season.

    • LEADING OFF: Kershaw faces Brewers; M's await injury reports
      June 1, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

      DIGGIN' BREW TOWN

Clayton Kershaw (7-2) starts Friday's series opener for the Los Angeles Dodgers against Milwaukee, where he is 4-0 with a 1.41 ERA in five starts. Jimmy Nelson, who starts for the Brewers, struck out 10 against Arizona in his last start.

      ---

      HOPEFUL NEWS

The Seattle Mariners will be hoping for good news on Friday with the injuries suffered by designated hitter Nelson Cruz and shortstop Jean Segura. Segura suffered a right ankle injury Thursday and Cruz was hit by a pitch on the top of his left hand. Both players ended up leaving Seattle's 6-3 loss to Colorado and were undergoing tests to determine the severity. The Mariners are expected to have updates on both players on Friday. Seattle has nine players on the 10- or 60-day disabled list.

      ---

      YOU AGAIN

Cleveland's Josh Tomlin, who starts the opener of a three-game series in Kansas City, is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in two starts against the Royals this season and has a 10-4 record against them in 19 starts.

      ---

      ON THE REBOUND

Boston's Rick Porcello and Alec Asher attempt to get back into a groove when the Red Sox face the Orioles in an AL East matchup. Porcello (3-6, 4.21 ERA) will be looking to regain his 2016 Cy Young Award form after giving up 11 hits in each of his last two outings. Hit hard by Houston on Sunday in his first start with Baltimore, Asher (1-3, 3.77 ERA) gets a second chance to prove he's worthy of replacing struggling Ubaldo Jimenez in the rotation.

      ---

      BIG SUPPORT

Jose Urena (3-2) is scheduled to start Friday for the Miami Marlins against Patrick Corbin (4-5) and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Marlins have scored 20 runs in Urena's past two starts, and he won both.

      • Friday's Diamond Notes
        June 1, 2017

Hottest team: Astros (9-1 last 10) vs. Rangers

Houston is starting to run away with the AL West title as June is underway. The Astros pulled off a three-game road sweep of the Twins, which included a pair of wins in which they scored 16 and 17 runs. Houston bounced back nicely from a three-game sweep at the hands of Cleveland two weeks ago by winning nine of the past 10 games, as the Astros head into their series opener at Texas with an incredible 13-1 record in the past 14 Game 1’s of a series.

Dallas Keuchel looks to stay perfect on Friday as the 2015 Cy Young winner owns a sparkling 8-0 record and 1.81 ERA for Houston. The Astros have won all five of Keuchel’s road starts this season, but lost each of his two outings in Arlington last season. Houston faces Yu Darvish in the opener, as the Rangers have compiled a 6-1 record in his past seven trips to the mound.

Coldest team: Cubs (0-6 last six) vs. Cardinals

Chicago must be thrilled to leave the state of California after getting swept in consecutive series by the Dodgers and Padres. How bad was it losing three times at San Diego? The Cubs were listed as -200 favorites or above in two of those defeats, while scoring a total of five runs in that series. The defending champions sit at 25-27, as the Cubs didn’t lose their 27th game last season until June 30.

The Cubs return to Wrigley Field to face the rival Cardinals, who won the final two games of their series against the Dodgers. Former Cardinal John Lackey looks to rebound following a pair of losses to the Giants and Dodgers his last two starts, while allowing 13 hits and 10 earned runs in 10 innings of work. Lackey is winless in two home outings against St. Louis since joining Chicago prior to last season.

Hottest pitcher: Ty Blach, Giants (3-2, 3.83 ERA)

The top southpaw in the San Francisco rotation is sidelined (Madison Bumgarner), but Blach is turning into the standout left-hander. Blach has tossed at least seven innings in each of his last four starts, while pitching into the eighth inning in last Saturday’s win over the Braves. For the exception of a horrible outing at Cincinnati in early May in which he allowed 10 runs in three innings, Blach has given up two earned runs or fewer in five starts. The Giants travel to Philadelphia to face a Phillies’ squad that has lost 17 of their last 21 games.

Coldest pitcher: Bronson Arroyo, Reds (3-4, 6.62 ERA)

Cincinnati went through a stretch from mid-April through mid-May in which it won five straight starts made by Arroyo. However, things have gone backwards of late for the 40-year old, who has allowed 14 earned runs in his last 15.1 innings of work, while Cincinnati is 0-3 in this stretch. Arroyo takes the mound on Friday against the Braves, who are on the last leg of a three-city road trip after dropping two of three to the Angels.

Biggest OVER run: Rays (4-0 last four)

Tampa Bay is coming off an exciting series against Texas, as the Rays captured two of three in Arlington. The Rays and Rangers managed to combine for 18, 14, and 14 runs, as Tampa Bay and its opponent has now combined for at least 14 runs in four straight games.

Tampa Bay continues its road swing in Seattle against a Mariners’ squad that scored 26 runs during a four-game winning streak prior to Thursday’s 6-3 loss to Colorado. The OVER streak may be in jeopardy with Jake Odorizzi taking the mound on Friday as the Rays are 7-2 to the UNDER in his nine starts this season, including a 3-1 UNDER mark away from Tropicana Field.

Biggest UNDER run: Athletics (6-2 last eight)

Oakland returns to the Bay Area after getting shut out at Cleveland on Thursday afternoon, 8-0. That contest barely finished UNDER the total of 8 ½, as three of four games went UNDER against the Indians. The A’s have scored four runs or less in each of the last four contests to help contribute to this UNDER run, while facing Nationals’ ace Stephen Strasburg in the interleague series opener. Strasburg is 7-2-1 to the UNDER in 10 starts this season, but Oakland starter Andrew Triggs has cashed the OVER in his last three outings.

Matchup to Watch: Dodgers vs. Brewers

Normally, this feature wouldn’t spotlight a game with a +200 home underdog. But, Milwaukee has played better of late by winning four of its previous six games to retain first place in the NL Central. The Brewers have a tall task this weekend by hosting the surging Dodgers at Miller Park, starting with a matchup against Cy Young favorite Clayton Kershaw.

Although Los Angeles dropped the final two games at St. Louis, the Dodgers pulled with one half-game of the Rockies for first place in the NL West by winning 11 of their last 15 contests. Kershaw is coming off his worst start of the season against the Cubs by allowing 11 hits and four earned runs in 4.1 innings of work, but Los Angeles outslugged Chicago, 9-4. Kershaw is perfect in his last four road starts, while yielding a total of four earned runs in those victories.

The Brewers dropped five of seven meetings with the Dodgers last season, while missing out on Kershaw in those games. Jimmy Nelson takes the mound in the series opener for Milwaukee, as he struck out a season-high 10 batters in seven innings in a 9-5 victory over Arizona his last time out. Milwaukee owns a 2-4 record in Nelson’s six home starts this season, but one of those wins came as a +165 underdog against the Cubs in April.

Betcha didn’t know: Josh Tomlin has dominated the Royals recently as Cleveland visits Kansas City. Tomlin tossed a complete-game in last Sunday’s 10-1 rout of the Royals, as the Indians improved their mark to 6-2 in his previous eight starts against Kansas City since the beginning of 2016.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-230) at Brewers

Biggest public underdog: Pirates (+100) at Mets

Biggest line move: Red Sox (-125 to -135) at Orioles

                  • MLB roundup: Homers carry Blue Jays over Yankees
                    June 2, 2017

TORONTO -- Josh Donaldson hit two solo home runs, Justin Smoak added a two-run blast and a sacrifice fly and the Toronto Blue Jays held on to beat the New York Yankees 7-5 on Friday night.

The Blue Jays have won six of the first eight games of their 10-game homestand. Toronto starter Francisco Liriano (3-2) returned from the disabled list to pitch five-plus innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. The left-hander struck out five.

Aaron Judge and Starlin Castro each hit two-run homers for the Yankees (31-21) as the teams split the first two games of the four-game series. Liriano faced two batters in the sixth, allowing a single to Gary Sanchez and the 18th homer of the season by Judge.

New York starter Michael Pineda (6-3) allowed five runs on 10 hits and three walks in five innings to take his first loss since May 11. He had one strikeout before Jonathan Holder replaced him in the sixth.

                    Orioles 3, Red Sox 2

BALTIMORE -- Seth Smith and Manny Machado each hit solo home runs in the first inning, and starter Alec Asher threw 6 1/3 solid innings as Baltimore defeated Boston.

Smith homered to lead off the first, and Machado added a 465-foot blast, No. 11 of the season, two batters later which gave Asher and the Orioles an early 2-0 lead. That proved to be enough for the right-hander, who is trying to earn the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

Asher (2-3) allowed two runs on just three hits. He struck out five without a walk and left to a standing ovation in the seventh. Pablo Sandoval clubbed a solo home run and Jackie Bradley Jr. also drove in a run for Boston.

                    Cubs 3, Cardinals 2

CHICAGO -- Jason Heyward's eighth-inning sacrifice fly drove in Anthony Rizzo to snap a tie as Chicago edged St. Louis to snap a six-game losing streak.

Reliever Pedro Strop (1-2) got the win after a one-third inning appearance in relief for the Cubs. Chicago reliever Wade Davis worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 11th save.

Reliever Trevor Rosenthal (1-2) took the loss for the Cardinals after his one-inning effort. Rizzo doubled off Rosenthal to lead off the eighth, advanced to third on Ben Zobrist's fielder's choice grounder and scored the go-ahead run on Heyward's sacrifice to center.

                    Royals 4, Indians 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jason Vargas threw a complete-game shutout as Kansas City won a challenge and a game, beating Cleveland.

Vargas (7-3), who missed most of last season after having Tommy John surgery in 2015, last had a complete-game shutout on Aug. 13, 2014, against Oakland. He limited the Indians to seven hits, six of them singles, and was backed by four double plays.

Johnny Cueto threw the last complete-game shutout for the Royals on Aug. 10, 2015, against Detroit. Indians starter Josh Tomlin (3-7) gave up three runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings.

                    Pirates 12, Mets 7

NEW YORK -- Rookie catcher Elias Diaz, a last-second addition to the lineup, collected six RBIs as Pittsburgh outslugged New York at Citi Field.

The Pirates snapped a two-game losing streak. The Mets have lost three straight. Diaz was inserted into the lineup about 30 minutes before game time in place of Francisco Cervelli, who was scratched due to illness. The 26-year-old went 2-for-5 with a three-run double in the fourth and a three-run homer in the sixth that fueled a seven-run inning.

The outburst occurred immediately after the Mets scored five runs in their half of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. Lucas Duda hit two homers -- a two-run shot in the second and a solo blast in the fifth -- for New York.

                    Marlins 7, Diamondbacks 5

MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton hit the go-ahead home run and set a franchise career RBIs record, leading Miami over Arizona at Marlins Park.

Stanton has 579 RBIs, one more than former Marlins third baseman Mike Lowell. It was Stanton's 15th homer of the season. The Marlins also got homers from Christian Yelich, his seventh, and Justin Bour, his team-high 16th. Miami has won five of its past six games.

Arizona got a home run and three RBIs from Paul Goldschmidt. Reliever Dustin McGowan (3-0) earned the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. A.J. Ramos pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his seventh save.

                    Tigers 15, White Sox 5

DETROIT -- Miguel Cabrera drove in four runs on his way to becoming just the 39th player in major league history to amass 1,000 extra-base hits while Mikie Mahtook, J.D. Martinez and John Hicks hit home runs to power Detroit over Chicago.

Michael Fulmer (6-3) survived a wobbly three-run fifth inning as he broke a two-game slide in which Detroit was shut out in both starts. Fulmer allowed seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts in seven innings. Arcenio Leon worked the eighth and Blaine Hardy the ninth for the Tigers.

Leury Garcia touched Fulmer for an RBI single in the third inning, by which time Detroit had scored five times, and another while Chicago was getting three runs and three hits in the fifth. Tim Anderson had an RBI single and Melky Cabrera a sacrifice fly in the inning, which began with the Tigers leading 10-1.

                    Reds 3, Braves 2

CINCINNATI -- Devin Mesoraco snapped an 0-for-15 slump in the best possible way, leading off the 10th inning with a home run off Jose Ramirez to lift Cincinnati to a comeback win over Atlanta.

Mesoraco completed the Reds' comeback from a 2-0 ninth-inning deficit with his first career walkoff homer, sending the Braves to their third straight loss and fifth in the last six games. Raisel Iglesias (2-0) pitched the 10th for the Reds, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Adam Duvall and Eugenio Suarez recorded doubles to lead off the ninth against Braves closer Jim Johnson, cutting Atlanta's lead to 2-1. Suarez advanced to third with two outs and scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Atlanta right-hander Mike Foltynewicz allowed two hits over seven shutout innings and tied his career-high with 10 strikeouts.

                    Giants 10, Phillies 0

PHILADELPHIA -- San Francisco received a career outing from Ty Blach and took advantage of a Philadelphia staff that couldn't throw strikes, chasing starter Jerad Eickhoff by the third inning and running away to a lopsided win at Citizens Bank Park.

Center fielder Denard Span went 5-for-6 with three runs scored and had an RBI to lead a Giants' attack that collected 15 hits, tying a season high set in the second game of the season.

The Phillies walked a season-high 10 batters, allowing San Francisco to set its season high in runs scored. Four of those runs were unearned, thanks to a pair of errors. Blach (4-2) had no such issues of his own on the mound, making it through seven innings for the fifth consecutive start.

                      — Oct 28: Georgia (-3) vs Florida (@ Jacksonville)

                      ****************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

                      13) Davidson College is in the NCAA baseball tournament for the first time in 115 years; they upset North Carolina on Friday. Apparently their best pitcher is a 5-10 kid named Durin O’Linger who is a very good pitcher but not a pro prospect— great student, going to go to pharmacy school next. Terrific story.

Mr O’Linger threw 140 pitches in a game on May 24, then threw 51 more two days later. On the 27th, he threw 45 more pitches, then threw 92 against the Tar Heels yesterday.

All of this ignited a small firestorm on Twitter ignited by ESPN’s Keith Law, who went after the Davidson coach for abusing the kid’s arm. Couple of his ex-teammates objected strongly to that. It is an interesting debate; the kid will never play pro baseball, and he wants to make history for his school, with his friends. It is the kid’s choice, yes?

                      12) Westgate Casino in Las Vegas has a $1,500 NFL SuperContest every year; you pick five NFL games a week, and there are prizes— first place has been as much as $900,000 in the past.

This year, they’re adding a new angle; a separate $5,000 “Gold” SuperContest where there is only one winner— curious to see how many people sign up for that event.

                      11) From ESPN: Clayton Kershaw has been the betting favorite in his last 150 starts; next longest active streak is Carlos Carrasco of Cleveland (29).

                      10) 14 college freshmen were drafted by NBA teams last June; 20 are expected to be selected this year.

                      9) Lebron James is in his 8th NBA Final; his team has been underdog in six of those eight.

                      8) Cleveland Cavaliers are still paying former head coach Mike Brown, who is the interim head coach of the Warriors right now.

                      7) Mets’ catcher Travis d’Arnaud says he uses a different bat every day, often times one that belongs to a teammate. Mets’ TV guy Keith Hernandez said he never heard of that before.

Best wishes to Hernandez by the way; he had knee replacement surgery Friday.

                      6) Cubs had bases loaded, one out in 6th inning Friday and they pinch-hit for Kyle Schwarber. Baseball is a tough game. Schwarber is hitting .139 vs lefties this season.

                      5) Marlins’ 1B Justin Bour stole his first career base Thursday, in his 310th career game.

                      4) Las Vegas Golden Knights have been posted at 200-1 to win the Stanley Cup next season; they don’t have any players yet- they’re an expansion team. Who would bet on them?

                      3) Quincy McKnight averaged 18.9 pts/game at Sacred Heart last year but will transfer to Seton Hall, as big $$$ schools continue to poach good players from low D-I programs. McKnight will sit next year, then have two years left to play.

                      2) If you don’t think medicine and science are bleeping amazing, consider this; Hall of Famer Rod Carew was on TV during the Twins-Angels game Thursday night. He had both a heart transplant and a kidney transplant earlier this year, now says he feels good. Great to hear!!!

                      1) Kansas State WR Corey Sutton got a release from his scholarship, can go anywhere he likes now; K-State had originally blocked his transfer, but it was becoming a PR debacle so the school relented and he is gone.

                        June 2, 2017

                        Houston (38-16) at Texas (26-28)
Scheduled rotation: Keuchel (8-0) vs. Darvish (5-3), McCullers (6-1) vs. Cashner (2-4), Peacock (2-0) vs. Perez (2-5)
Series price: Astros -155, Rangers +135

Man, these Houston Astros sure have a World Series look about them.

They have the best record in baseball (38-16), the best team batting average (.277), the most runs scored and their +1.7 average margin of victory is also tops. It's the best 54-game start in club history. Best of all, they lead the majors with +17.4 units of profit for bettors. They're riding a seven-game win streak and bring their amazing show to Arlington to face to sliding Rangers.

Station Casinos has posted the Astros as -155 favorites, a number that appears to be 20 cents cheap based on the way both clubs are currently playing with Houston also getting its ace starting on Friday. Texas has lost eight of its last 11 and are two games under .500 while being 12 games behind Houston in the AL West.

Last season the Astros finished 11 games behind the Rangers and it was the Rangers who created that distance by winning 15 of the 19 meetings. Houston won three of the first four meetings this season, but Texas has been beating Houston like a drum with regularity since the Astros joined the AL West in 2013. Before this season, Texas won 73 of the previous 100 meetings, including 40 of 53 at Arlington.

The tables have certainly turned in the Lone Star state rivalry and the Astros look to be in good shape to win their first division title since 2001 when they were in the NL Central. A win in Friday's game will take them 23 games over .500, the most since 2005 when they made their only World series visit.

Something to take note of right out of the gate in this series is Friday's match-up with the AL's top Cy Young contender Dallas Keuchel (8-0, 1.81 ERA) facing Yu Darvish (5-3, 2.97). Houston doesn't mess around when they start off a series and have won the first game 14 of 17 times. In Game 3, they have gone 11-4.

Look for Houston to keep rolling and take this series.

Here's a look at a couple of other series that start on Friday that I have some interest in:

                        L.A. Dodgers (33-22) at Milwaukee (29-25)
Scheduled rotation: Kershaw (7-2) vs. Nelson (3-3), Hill (2-2) vs. Garza (2-2), Maeda (4-2) vs. Davies (5-3)
Series price: Dodgers -220, Brewers +180

It was just a few days ago I was talking about the Dodgers taking over their rightful claim to the NL West and the Brewers fading away as the Cubs were finally back in first-place in the NL Central. Now, it's the Dodgers a half-game behind the Rockies and Diamondbacks and the Brewers 1.5 games over St. Louis and three games up on the Cubs who have lost six straight heading into Friday's game against the Cardinals. There's a lot to like about the Brewers, beginning with +9.6 units of profit. They're also a reliable Over team at 31-21-2 with an average score of 5.0 to 4.5. Something to think about Friday is that the Brewers have beat Clayton Kershaw the past two meetings. Saturday's game backing Rich Hill against Matt Garza looks like the best bet of the series.

Colorado (34-22) at San Diego (22-33)
Scheduled rotation: Marquez (4-2) vs. Richard (3-6), Chatwood (4-7) vs. Chacin (4-4), Anderson (3-5) vs. Cosart (0-1)
Series price: Rockies -150, Padres +130

Colorado is an NL-best 19-9 on the road and back in first-place, but the Padres are puffing their chests out a little more after sweeping the world champion Cubs during the week. The Rockies fell out of first-place with a three-game losing streak at Seattle which ended Thursday behind rookie Kyle Freeland. It was only the fourth time in 17 series this season that the Rockies didn't jump out with a win in Game 1. They've been getting on it and staying on it all season. They're not going away. It's June and they're in first. The Padres have won four straight with great pitching and have stayed Under the total in seven straight. During the Under streak, San Diego pitchers have held opponents to 2.7 runs and a .206 batting average. Before thinking about betting against the Padres, think about the guy at a CG Technology sports book in Las Vegas who bet $460,000 on the Cubs to win on Wednesday. No way the Padres can sweep the Cubs, right? Padres won 2-1.

Cleveland (28-24) at Kansas City (22-30)
Scheduled rotation: Tomlin (3-6) vs. Vargas (6-3), Carrasco (5-2) vs. Hammel (1-6), Bauer (5-4) vs. Skoglund (1-0)
Series price: Indians -155, Royals +135

Kansas City took two of three last weekend at Cleveland, but they still have the worst record in the American League. The name of the game is scoring runs and nobody does it worse than Kansas City in the AL with 3.4 runs a game (Giants are MLB-worst at 3.3). Last season, the Indians went 14-5 against KC. These are the only two teams in baseball cashing better than 60 percent on the Under wagers. Cleveland leads the way at 62 percent (31-19-2) and Kansas City is right at 60 percent (30-20-2). Four of the six meetings have stayed Under this season and the Royals have stayed Under in 17 of its last 24 home games. That seems like a good theme to follow this weekend.

                        • MLB notebook: Mariners place SS Segura on disabled list
                          June 2, 2017

The Seattle Mariners placed shortstop Jean Segura on the 10-day disabled list on Friday with a right high ankle sprain.

Segura sustained the injury while sliding into second base in the fifth inning of Thursday's game against the Colorado Rockies. The 27-year-old Dominican entered Friday's action tied with Tampa Bay's Corey Dickerson with an American League-best .341 batting average. Segura has four homers, 20 RBIs and 29 runs scored in 43 games this season.

Seattle also recalled infielder Tyler Smith and right-hander Tyler Cloyd from Triple-A Tacoma and optioned right-hander Casey Lawrence to the Rainiers.

The Mariners transferred right-hander Ryan Weber to the 60-day disabled list and designated outfielder Andrew Aplin for assignment.

--The Boston Red Sox placed left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez on the 10-day disabled list with a right knee subluxation.

To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, the Red Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Rodriguez slipped while getting ready for Thursday's start, and he then gave up four homers while allowing seven runs over 5 2/3 innings against the Orioles. He experienced knee pain Friday.

Rodriguez, 24, is 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA in 10 starts this season. He has 65 strikeouts and has limited opposing batters to a .222 average.

--The Texas Rangers designated former closer Sam Dyson for assignment and hope to trade the struggling right-hander.

Dyson is 1-6 with a 10.80 ERA this season in 17 appearances. He has allowed 31 hits -- including six homers -- in 16 2/3 innings and lost his closer's role to right-hander Matt Bush. Dyson, 29, was solid in 2016 when he posted a 2.43 ERA and recorded 38 saves to help the Rangers with the American League West.

The Rangers activated right-handed reliever Jose Leclerc (finger) off the disabled list to replace Dyson.

                          • LEADING OFF: Price makes 2nd start; McCullers on a roll
                            June 2, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

                            PRICE POINT

David Price makes his second start of the season since coming off the disabled list when the Red Sox face the Orioles at Camden Yards. The 2012 Cy Young Award winner returned from an elbow injury Monday and did not get a decision after allowing three runs and two hits in five innings against the White Sox. The left-hander has made himself at home in Baltimore, where he's 6-0 with a 3.14 ERA in 10 career starts. Dylan Bundy (6-3, 2.89) goes for the Orioles.

                            ONE-TWO PUNCH

Streaking starter Lance McCullers Jr. (6-1, 2.48 ERA) is on the mound as the major league-leading Astros visit the AL West-rival Rangers. McCullers has won four straight decisions and was just selected the American League pitcher of the month for May, when he was 4-0 with a 0.99 ERA and 37 strikeouts over 36 1/3 innings. Houston also had the AL pitcher of the month for April in ace lefty Dallas Keuchel.

                            BAD NEWS, GOOD NEWS

The banged-up Mariners will be without Jean Segura for a while after he was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a high ankle sprain. There is no set timetable for his return, and Taylor Motter will now get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop. Segura entered Friday tied for the AL lead in batting average at .341. It's his second stint on the DL this season after missing 12 games in April with a hamstring injury. Seattle did get some positive news about slugger Nelson Cruz, who was back in the lineup after getting hit on the top of his left hand by a pitch Thursday.

                            LOOKING GOOD

Cardinals outfielder Magneuris Sierra is making a nice impression in his first major league season. The 21-year-old is hitting .375 (12 for 32) since making his debut last month straight from Class A. Sierra was promoted back to the big leagues this week from Double-A to replace infielder Jedd Gyorko, who went on the paternity list after Thursday's 2-0 victory over the Dodgers. Sierra had an RBI single Friday at Wrigley Field vs. the Cubs.

                            HE'S AVAILABLE

Will any team that needs bullpen help take a chance on ex-Rangers closer Sam Dyson? He was designated for assignment by Texas after his latest rough outing - he gave up two home runs in the 10th inning vs. Tampa Bay this week. The right-hander is 1-6 with a 10.80 ERA in 17 games and has blown all four of his save chances this year. Dyson had 38 saves last season when the Rangers won their second straight AL West title, and was a key reliever for Team USA when it won the World Baseball Classic in March. Dyson lost his closer's role for Texas in early May, and Matt Bush now has the job.
