    Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) Best part of the Strickland/Harper shenanigans Monday night was Buster Posey totally declining to get involved. Usually, the catcher tries to keep the angry batter away from the pitcher, but Posey made no such attempt.

Harper hit two very long home runs off Strickland in the ’14 playoffs (thats 2.5 years ago!!!) in their only two previous meetings. Guess something Harper did/said ticked Strickland off.

    12) I like watching baseball when they have the strike zone on the right side of the screen, so we can see if the umps miss any pitches. To me, it makes the broadcast a little better.

    11) Is Nick Markakis the best active player who has never been an All-Star? He has 1,945 hits, is a solid defender, has a .358 career OB%. You’d think he would’ve made one All-Star team.

    10) Jeb Bush is out as part of the group trying to buy the Miami Marlins; apparently he had “only $20M” of his own money involved in the project, not enough to make him a controlling partner, which is what he wanted.

    9) 10 of the 64 teams in the NCAA college baseball tournament are located in Texas.

    8) Nike stock fell 19% last year, is up only 4% this year; with the NBA Finals starting this week, Nike didn’t need Cavs-Warriors being overshadowed by Eldrick Woods’ DUI arrest. Nike does not sell golf equipment anymore, but they still sell golf clothes, which Woods endorses.

    7) Houston Astros are almost definitely going to be in the playoffs; I’m curious how they’ll deal with Josh Reddick playing against lefties (Price? Sale? Lester?) in playoffs/World Series.

Reddick is a career .270 hitter vs righties, .220 vs lefties (.282 OB%). A’s once pinch-hit for him in the 4th inning of a big game because the opponent put a lefty in. So far this year he is 7-25 (.280) vs lefties; maybe the change of scenery has helped him. We’ll see.

    6) Kansas Jayhawks will have six transfers amongst their 13 scholarship players next winter; only three of them will be eligible next season. Makes team chemistry a little dicey.

    5) David Blatt went 83-40 as coach of the Cavaliers in the regular season, went 14-6 in playoff games and got fired. Now he coaches overseas; I think he had just enough ego to have been a really good college coach, but we’ll probably never know.

Fact of the matter is, if Lebron James wakes up one day in August and wants Tyronn Lue fired, the man is as good as gone. Probably won’t happen, but it could.

    4) Not a big fan of playing the infield in; just doesn’t seem necessary, unless the runner on third is really fast. Playing fielders in opens up too many cheap hits that wouldn’t happen with a more traditional defense.

    3) Joe Niekro pitched in the major leagues for 22 seasons, had 973 career at-bats with a .156 BA and hit one home run— off his brother, Hall of Fame Phil Niekro.

    2) A Saudi prince lost $359M in six hours playing poker at a casino in Egypt; he also sold off five of his nine wives as a way to reduce his debt.

I knew cats had nine lives; had no idea Saudi princes had nine wives.

    1) I don’t care what anyone says, Bob Uecker should’ve won an Oscar for best supporting actor for his role as Indians’ announcer Harry Doyle in Major League.

      • LEADING OFF: Night moves for Tanaka; Blue Jays go batty
        May 30, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

        NIGHT AND DAY

Masahiro Tanaka appears to do his best work at night. The New York Yankees right-hander makes his 11th start of the season in Baltimore, looking to extend an unusual run of success under the lights. Tanaka is 5-1 with a 2.51 ERA in six night starts and 0-3 with a 17.51 ERA in four day games. He faces Kevin Gausman (2-4, 6.17) and the Orioles. Opponents are batting .322 with 10 homers in 54 innings against Gausman.

        TORONTO TURNAROUND

The Blue Jays can move within a game of .500 by beating the Reds, a stark improvement following a 6-17 start to the season. Toronto has 47 homers in May, including four while improving to 25-27 with a 6-4 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday night. Jose Bautista has been a driving force in the resurgence, hitting .320 with nine homers with 21 RBIs following a miserable April. Bautista, Josh Donaldson, Russell Martin and Kendrys Morales each homered in Tuesday's win.

        STIFF COMPETITION

Oakland left-hander Sean Manaea (3-3) gets the ball at AL champion Cleveland, his latest assignment against one of the league's heavyweights. The second-year pitcher has won two straight starts, beating the Red Sox and Yankees while posting a 1.50 ERA with 11 strikeouts over 12 innings.

        PAX IS BACK

James Paxton is set to come off the disabled list for the Mariners against Colorado. Paxton (3-0, 1.43 ERA) was among baseball's best pitchers in April before landing on the DL with a left forearm strain. He'll face standout rookie Antonio Senzatela (7-1, 3.19), who most recently pitched eight shutout innings in a win over the Cardinals.

        HOLES IN HOUSTON

David Paulino was recalled from the minors to start at Minnesota after the major league-leading Astros (37-16) put right-hander Joe Musgrove on the disabled list Tuesday with shoulder discomfort. Paulino was at Triple-A Fresno and is considered one of the team's top prospects. Musgrove, who is 4-4 with a 4.89 ERA after throwing seven scoreless innings against Baltimore last Friday, could miss just one turn. But for now, he joins fellow Astros starters Charlie Morton and Collin McHugh on the DL. Houston has won six straight.

        DEALING D-BACKS

Diamondbacks right-hander Zack Godley will try to follow a gem by Robbie Ray with another one against the Pirates. Ray threw a four-hitter for his first complete game Tuesday night, and Godley (1-1, 1.99 ERA) is on a tear of his own. He pitched six scoreless innings in a 4-2 win over Milwaukee last time out and has churned out four straight quality starts. Pittsburgh right-hander Chad Kuhl (1-5, 6.29) is winless in nine starts since beating Atlanta on April 8 in his season debut.

          • LEADING OFF: Pujols at 599; Night moves for Tanaka
            May 31, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

            SWEET 600

Albert Pujols is one big fly away from being the ninth member of the 600-home run club. The 37-year-old can become the fourth-youngest to reach the mark after getting No. 599 off 44-year-old Bartolo Colon on Tuesday. Pujols has homered in back-to-back games for the first time this season. His Angels are set to face Braves starter Jaime Garcia.

            • Slide safely or prioritize safety? Runners must think fast
              May 31, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) If Mike Trout has ever been concerned about his safety when stealing a base, it hasn't held him back.

For the AL MVP and many of baseball's best baserunners, it might not matter anyway. In those split seconds after ball beats runner to the bag, decisions aren't made with much calculation. If they see a way to the base, they'll contort their body any which way to try to get there.

''When you look down there, you see the throw is going to beat you, you have to do something to try to escape,'' the Los Angeles Angels star said last week.

Sometimes the result is a sweet, highlight-worthy slide . But as Trout experienced over the weekend, there's a risk to letting instinct take hold in those spots - he tore a ligament in his left thumb diving into second base in Miami on Sunday.

Trout was set to have surgery Wednesday to repair the thumb, which put him on the disabled list for the first time in his career. It's yet to be seen if the injury will add caution to Trout's baserunning after years of brazen, crowd-pleasing evasions of infielder's tags.

Trout has been a regular Houdini on the basepaths throughout his career, and he's particularly adept at missing tags when he goes in headfirst. He gave Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson the slip on a stolen base last September with one, flipping onto his right side at the last moment, whipping his left arm away from Donaldson's glove and getting his right hand on the corner of the base.

Trout has also gone headlong into first base when needed, and he even risked his body last season against Toronto when he avoided both a catcher and a discarded baseball bat on a slide into home plate.

Those kinds of plays might give some managers ulcers, but not all skippers are keen on slowing down their most gifted athletes. Pirates boss Clint Hurdle has one of baseball's slickest baserunners in Josh Harrison, who has a history of staying safe in creative ways . Hurdle has no intention of holding Harrison back.

Harrison recently tested the bounds of his knee ligaments with a wild slide to avoid a tag at second base. While legging out a double, Harrison cut short his feet-first slide well shy of the bag by jamming his right foot into the ground. He popped into the air, and with his helmet knocked off, his legs splayed and his arms flailing, he dodged Nationals infielder Wilmer Difo and landed his left foot on second base. He immediately looked into the Pirates dugout and grinned at his stunned teammates.

Harrison attributes his ability to elude defenders to his older brothers and a narrow hallway in his childhood home.

''I'm sure I've done things like that running from my brothers, running, thinking I'm going to slide under a tag or something,'' he said. ''Just trying to get away by any means. They were bigger than me.

''I would never suggest anybody to do that,'' he added. ''But if you can handle it, you obviously know if you can.''

If a player is capable of pulling off something like that, Hurdle isn't about to make him stop.

''Let men play the game. That's what I've got,'' Hurdle said. ''He plays the game with his heart outside his chest. I've never seen anybody avoid tags like he does. I think it'd be a waste of my time telling him, `Hey, can you slow down? Can you be a little bit more careful?'

''That's one of the things that got him to the big leagues. That's what keeps him playing,'' Hurdled said. ''He's been to an All-Star Game. It's that zest, that effort, that energy to play. So, I'm just going to let him play.''

And of course, sometimes a player just can't help himself, like when Blue Jays baserunner Chris Coghlan sent himself soaring over catcher Yadier Molina on a play at the plate last month.

Concern for injury? Not exactly. No time, really.

''I was thinking, `Since he's down, why don't you jump?''' Coghlan recalled.

It's not a play Coghlan has ever practiced, and not one he's sure he could replicate. It only worked because his legs bounced off Molina's back as the catcher stood, generating enough momentum for Coghlan to finish his flip.

Would he risk his body like that again? It probably won't ever come up.

''You probably don't see that for 100 years,'' said John Gibbons, his manager.

Of course, some players have learned the hard way that perhaps they don't have the body control to attempt such bold entries. Like when San Francisco's All-Star catcher Buster Posey got a mouthful of third base and a scratch on his chin during an awkward, headfirst slide last August.

He vowed after the game that he'd only be sliding feet-first the rest of the season.

''I've always said that this game will humble you quickly,'' he added.

Hottest team: Blue Jays (7-1 past eight games, 9-3 past 12 at home)

The Blue Jays got off to a horrendous start, but they have banded together and are doing the things prognosticators in the preseason thought they would accomplish. There is plenty of time remaining in the season and they're just 6 1/2 games back of the first-place New York Yankees in the American League East. Perhaps they should petition Commissioner Rob Manfred to join the National League, as they're 5-0 in their past five interleague games, outscoring the opposition 44-13 during the impressive span. They'll wrap up their interleague series against the Reds on Wednesday afternoon in the Great White North, working against Tim Adleman, who has a 4.95 ERA through 40 innings.

Coldest team Phillies (2-9 past 11 games, 6-24 past 30 overall)

The Fightin' Phils haven't been putting up much of a fight lately, winning just three times in the past 16 games dating bcak to May 14. Philadelphia has been outscored 11-3 over the first two games of the series in Miami, and they have failed to scored more than four runs in 11 consecutive outings. The Phillies have won just one of their past seven against teams with a losing record, they're 1-11 in their past 12 road games against teams with a losing home record and they're 3-10 in Aaron Nola's past 13 starts. Philadelphia has shown no signs of breaking out of their funk and a trip to Miami hasn't been a cure for their ills. They're 2-5 in their past seven at Marlins Park.

Hottest pitcher: Antonio Senzatela, Rockies (7-1, 3.19 ERA)

Senzatela has won seven of his eight decisions while holding the opposition to a .238 batting average with a 1.15 WHIP. While he has been surprisingly good at home, going 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA despite the rarefied air in Denver, he has very similar and consistent numbers on the road. He is 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA with a .241 opponent batting average in four starts away from home. The Rockies are 4-1 in Senzatela's past five against a team with a losing overall record while going 8-2 in his past 10 starts overall.

Coldest pitcher: Kevin Gausman, Orioles (2-4, 6.17 ERA)

Gausman has really struggled with consistency this season, and the O's have struggled with him on the hill. The Orioles are 2-6 over his past eight outings and 1-5 in his past six agaisnt teams with a winning overall record. The O's are also 2-12 in their past 14 games against right-handed starters and 1-8 in their past nine overall. The good news for Gausman is that he is facing the Yankees, as the O's are 6-0 in his past six home starts against the Bronx Bombers and 4-1 in his past five outings against the Pinstripers overall. Conversely, the Yankees are 8-22 in their past 30 trips to Charm City while going 1-5 in Masahiro Tanaka's past six tries against the Birds.

Biggest UNDER run: Nationals (7-2-1 past 10 games overall)

The 'under' has been the play for the Nationals lately, going 5-1-1 in their past seven outings. Their pitching has been on point lately, and the offense has struggled a bit. Surprisingly, the 'over' is 5-2 in Max Scherzer's past seven road starts and 4-0 in his past four when making an appearance on four days of rest. He ranks 11th in the league in ERA, so the 'over' results have been due to a tremendous amount of run support when he makes the start. The 'under has also cashed in six of the past seven meetings with the Giants in San Francisco while going 15-5-1 in the past 21 battles between these budding rivals.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (3-0-1 past four games, 6-1-1 past eight overall)

The 'over' has hit in three of the past four for the Bravos because they're allowing 6.3 runs per game. The Atlanta bats seem to come alive and the Braves pitching seems to go in the tank when playing interleague games. The 'over' is 6-0 in Atlanta's past six interleague battles, 4-0 in their past four interleague road games and 4-1 in their past five against American League West foes. The over has also cashed in their past six interleague games against right-handed starters while posting an impressive 33-16-2 in their past 51 on the road overall.

Matchup to watch: Royals vs. Tigers

The Royals have been stuck in the American League Central Division basement, but they have made strides lately and are looking to swap spots with the Tigers. After winning a pitcher's duel on Tuesday, 1-0, the Royals are just 1 1/2 games behind manager Brad Ausmus' group for fourth in the Central. Kansas City will face southpaw Matthew Boyd, who hasn't won over his pst seven starts and he has failed to last more than six innings in each of his past three showings. He is also 1-3 with a 9.00 ERA in six career appearances against Detroit. The Royals have struggled with Ian Kennedy on the hill, however, going 1-4 in his past five starts and 7-20 over his past 27 against Central foes.

Betcha didn’t know: The 'over' has cashed in seven of the past meetings between the Yankees and Orioles, including four of the past five in Baltimore. The over is also 7-1 in Masahiro Tanaka's past eight starts on the road and 6-1 in his past seven inside the division. In addition, the over is 5-1 in Tanaka's past six attempts against a team with a winning overall mark. The over is also 3-0-1 in Kevin Gausman's past four outings at home while going 8-3 in Baltimore's past 11 outings against teams with a winning percentage over .600.

Biggest public favorite: Mets (-180) vs. Brewers

Biggest public underdog: Rockies (+175) at Mariners

Biggest line move: Mariners (-135 to -175) vs. Rockies

                        TIGER WOODS

More disturbing images of Tiger Woods emerged in the black-and-white details of police reports, depicting him sound asleep behind the wheel of a car parked awkwardly on the side of a six-lane Florida road with two flat tires, the engine still running and a blinker flashing.

When a police officer woke him, Woods was so disoriented that he initially said he had just returned from playing golf in Los Angeles. Then, he said he didn't know where he was or how far away he was from his home in Jupiter Island.

                        He kept falling back asleep.

Eventually, he failed a sobriety test so badly that at one point officers moved toward him to ensure he didn't fall over.

There was no evidence of alcohol, however, confirming what Woods said Monday night when he issued a statement saying he had had an ''unexpected reaction'' to ************ medicine. Jupiter police said he took a breath test that showed no alcohol in his system. He later agreed to a urine test.

                        BASEBALL

MIAMI (AP) Jeb Bush has dropped out of the race for the Miami Marlins.

The ex-presidential candidate and former Florida governor is no longer interested in buying the Marlins and has ended his pursuit of the team, two people close to the negotiations said.

One of the people said former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter, who had been part of Bush's group, is still exploring a bid with other investors. The two people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the parties involved aren't commenting publicly on the status of negotiations.

Jeter becomes the frontman for an investment group competing with a group led by businessman Tagg Romney, son of former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. The Romney group includes Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine and former Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Giants reliever Hunter Strickland received a six-game suspension and Washington's Bryce Harper was penalized four games for their roles in a benches-clearing brawl at AT&T Park a day earlier.

Each also was fined an undisclosed amount. Major League Baseball said both players planned to appeal, so they were eligible to play in Tuesday night's game between the clubs. Baseball Senior Vice President Joe Garagiola Jr. typically hears player appeals.

Strickland hit Harper in the hip with a pitch in the eighth inning and the Washington slugger charged the mound, wildly firing his helmet before trading punches to the head with Strickland during the Nationals' 3-0 win Monday at San Francisco.

MLB Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre's explanation of the disciplinary decisions said Strickland intentionally hit ''Harper with a pitch, inciting the bench-clearing incident and fighting'' while Harper's suspension came ''for charging the mound, throwing his helmet and fighting.''

                        TENNIS

                        PARIS (AP)
                        - Andy Murray joined other current players in rejecting tennis great Margaret Court's recent public stance against same-sex marriage.

The topic has generated discussion at the French Open - including about whether the Australian Open stadium that honors Court should have its name changed. There was also talk about whether a protest of some sort could take place in connection with that Grand Slam tournament next year.

''I don't see why anyone has a problem with two people who love each other getting married. If it's two men, two women, that's great. I don't see why it should matter. It's not anyone else's business,'' the No. 1-ranked Murray said after winning his first-round match at Roland Garros. ''Everyone should have, in my opinion ... the same rights.''

Court is an Australian who won a record 24 Grand Slam singles titles in the 1960s and 1970s and is now a Christian pastor. In a letter published in The West Australian newspaper, Court wrote that she would stop flying Qantas ''where possible'' because the Australian airline ''has become an active promoter for same-sex marriage.''

The 74-year-old Court has been a critic of homosexuality for decades.

PARIS (AP) - A French tennis player's French Open credential was revoked because he grabbed a reporter and kissed her on the neck during a live TV interview at the tournament.

The French Tennis Federation announced it was punishing 21-year-old qualifier Maxime Hamou ''following his inappropriate behaviour towards a female journalist'' a day earlier, when he lost in the first round at Roland Garros.

The FFT said it would investigate the matter further.

                        MUHAMMAD ALI

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The owners who restored Muhammad Ali's boyhood home in Kentucky and opened it as a museum say it may have to close because of financial difficulties.

The pink home where Ali - known then as Cassius Clay - dreamed of boxing greatness has drawn more than 10,000 visitors since opening last year in Louisville.

Co-owners George Bochetto and Jared Weiss said they have asked the city of Louisville and the Ali Center to help support the landmark.

Bochetto says they have covered the costs to renovate the home and keep it open as a museum. They say a more comprehensive financial and marketing plan is needed.

The first anniversary of Ali's death is Saturday.

Louisville will honor its hometown champ with a six-week celebration that begins Saturday.

                        • Strickland-Harper brawl mishandled all around
                          May 30, 2017

Baseball veered into the Theater of the Absurd this week and from start to finish the performance was head-shaking unexplainable.

It started with San Francisco reliever Hunter Strickland drilling Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper in the hip with a 98 mph fastball Monday. Harper's response was to incite a bench-clearing brawl. And on Tuesday, Major League Baseball handed down suspensions that can be debated for the justice they were supposed to bring.

Strickland was suspended for six games and Harper for four. The Strickland penalty should have been twice what it was.

So soup-to-nuts, there was bad form all around.

Start with the incident. Baseball has unwritten rules, often polices itself and sometimes that means pitchers plunking hitters. That's no secret. Strickland's decision to go after Harper like a thug was based on the right-hander feeling "shown up" by the outfielder in the 2014 National League Division Series. Harper hit a long home run off Strickland in Game 1 and put a Strickland pitch in the McCovey Cove at AT&T Park in Game 4.

Did Harper "pimp" the homers? No doubt he wanted to watch them go. No question he eyed Strickland all the way around the bases after watching the entire flight of the ball on the second one.

But this was from three seasons ago. And it happened in a series that the Giants won en route to capturing the World Series championship. He wants a pound of flesh now? It's thuggish buffoonery.

Harper has a way of getting under people's skin with the way he plays the game. Still he made a choice. He could have just gone to first base. Instead he charged the mound, badly missed the mark when he fired his helmet at Strickland and the two exchanged blows to set off the brawl.

Players sometimes get hurt in a brawl and that means the arc of a team's season could change. The Nationals are off to an amazing start this season, leading the NL East by 8 1/2 games entering Tuesday. This was no time to lose his cool, but Harper did. Even after the game he said "it's so in the past that it's not even relevant anymore."

If you want to get a barometer on exactly how ridiculous every part of this was, just watch a replay and keep your eyes on Giants star catcher Buster Posey. Most of the time when baseball is policing itself this way, you see the catcher intervene to try to prevent the charge at the mound. Posey knew this was coming. His inaction -- letting it happen without making a move -- speaks to what he thought of it.

He didn't approve. He knew his team needs him and he didn't want to get hurt in a brawl. He's the only smart person in this entire imbroglio.

After it was over, Strickland seemed pretty pleased with himself. That seems like a head full of loose wiring.

Now to MLB, which tried to dispense justice with its penalties. Both players were fined undisclosed amounts. Strickland got the six-game suspension. Harper was locked down for the four.

If there was any measure of insight in these judgements, it's that Strickland got the longer suspension. Clearly, MLB saw deploying the "unwritten rules" badly and three seasons later as the bigger transgression. Strickland set this whole thing off with an ego bruised in a postseason where he ended up wearing a ring.

So if Strickland, and thus the Giants, committed the bigger sin, why are the Nationals paying the higher freight in this dispensing of justice?

Washington has to go four games without the linchpin in its offense. Strickland might have pitched in three or four games for San Francisco and how many batters would he have faced?

MLB has to come down on a player who escalates a scenario and charges the mound to ignite a bench-clearing brawl. No question about that. But to hand down a verdict that penalizes the bigger sin less? This is a big-time error in judgement.

Strickland did something dangerous -- and throwing 98 at someone is absolutely dangerous -- with questionable motive and without regard for consequences. He planned it. He executed his plan.

Harper was reacting in the moment. His decision was bad, but at least understandable. The ball is small, but it can do serious damage at 98.

It's a good thing that MLB tries to dispense judgement. It might be a good thing that baseball polices its own conduct. The league and the players need to see that there has always been a right way to do both.

Almost no one did anything right here.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) George Springer reached base in all six plate appearances and hit two of Houston's season-high six home runs to lead the Astros to their seventh straight victory, 17-6 over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.

Carlos Correa, Alex Bregman, Evan Gattis and Marwin Gonzalez also went deep for the Astros, who scored 40 runs in the three games to set a franchise record for runs in a series of any length. They had 19 hits on Wednesday and 37 in the series.

Brian Dozier, Eddie Rosario and Jason Castro homered for the Twins, who have lost four straight. Hector Santiago (4-5) gave up six runs and eight hits and walked three in six innings, three days after he was an emergency fill-in during the 15th inning of a loss to Tampa Bay.

Springer's two homers traveled an estimated 900 combined feet, including a moon shot off of Ryan Pressly in the six-run seventh inning that landed just short of the third deck in left-center field. That was measured at 473 feet, the second-longest homer in the majors this season behind a 481-footer by Arizona's Jake Lamb on April 29.

Michael Feliz (2-0) got the win and left-hander Reymin Guduan also made his big league debut, allowing one run on two hits in two innings.

                              PADRES 2, CUBS 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rookie Franchy Cordero tripled in the eighth and scored on Yangervis Solarte's fielder's choice and San Diego handed Chicago its season-high sixth straight loss.

Luis Perdomo and two relievers combined to hold the struggling Cubs to three hits. The rebuilding Padres won their season-high fourth straight game and swept the Cubs for the first time since Aug. 6-8, 2012.

The defending World Series champion Cubs, who were swept at the Dodgers during the weekend, finished their first winless trip of at least six games since Aug. 3-8, 2012, when they also lost three at Los Angeles and three at San Diego.

Overall the Cubs have lost seven in a row on the road.

Cordero, who made his big league debut on Saturday, tripled to right-center off Koji Uehara (1-3) leading off the eighth. Solarte hit a grounder to second baseman Ian Happ, whose throw home wasn't in time to get Cordero.

Brad Hand (1-3) pitched a perfect eighth for the win and Brandon Maurer pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

                              ORIOLES 10, YANKEES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Adam Jones homered and drove in five runs, Chris Davis added a two-run shot and Baltimore beat Masahiro Tanaka and New York.

Baltimore took two of three from the AL East leaders after coming in with a seven-game losing streak. The Yankees have lost 11 straight series in Baltimore - the second-longest road skid in franchise history behind a 12-series drought at Oakland from 1985-91.

Back in the lineup after missing four straight games with a sore hip, Jones contributed an RBI double to a four-run third inning, hit a three-run homer in the fourth and drove in a run with an infield hit in the eighth.

Tanaka (5-5) lost his fourth straight start, extending the longest streak of his career. The right-hander gave up seven runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Yankees had 11 hits but stranded 11 and went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position.

Kevin Gausman (3-4) allowed two earned runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings, walking five and striking out four. He twice escaped bases-loaded, two-out jams to earn his second win since April 13 and provide hope for a starting rotation that was 1-9 since May 8.

                              CARDINALS 2, DODGERS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Dexter Fowler hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning to back Carlos Martinez and give St. Louis a victory over Los Angeles.

Martinez (4-4) allowed one run and four hits while striking out nine as he pitched eight innings to help St. Louis snap a three-game losing streak.

Ross Stripling (0-3) lost for the first time since April 26 as he allowed Fowler's seventh home run of the season, a 429-foot shot to right-center field. The Dodgers had their six-game winning streak end.

Seung-Hwan Oh pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save in 14 chances.

                              DIAMONDBACKS 6, PIRATES 5, 14 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Chris Owings singled home the go-ahead run in the 14th inning and Arizona outlasted Pittsburgh in a game that took more than 4+ hours to play - plus a 93-minute rain delay.

Paul Goldschmidt and Nick Ahmed homered for the Diamondbacks, who led in the ninth and 11th before finally putting away the Pirates. T.J. McFarland (3-0) pitched three hitless innings for the win.

Ahmed hit a solo shot in the 11th but Jordy Mercer tied the score in the bottom half with a home run of his own as steady showers began to fall. The game was delayed by rain after the 11th inning for 1 hour, 33 minutes.

David Peralta singled off Jhan Marinez (0-3) to start the 14th and advanced to second on Goldschmidt's groundout. Jake Lamb was intentionally walked, and Peralta scored when Owings singled to right field.

Marinez, the last man in the Pirates' bullpen, worked three innings in a game that lasted 4 hours, 40 minutes.

                              BLUE JAYS 5, REDS 4

TORONTO (AP) - Devon Travis hit a tiebreaking two-run home run in the seventh inning, Luke Maile also hit a two-run home run, and Toronto beat Cincinnati to complete a three-game sweep.

Jason Grilli (2-4) pitched one inning for the victory as the Blue Jays won for the eighth time in nine games and finished May at 18-10. Toronto hit 49 home runs in May, going deep in 18 of its final 20 games.

Joe Smith worked the eighth and Roberto Osuna survived a shaky ninth for his 11th save. Scott Schebler homered on Osuna's first pitch, his NL-leading 16th. A single, Ryan Goins' fielding error, and a stolen base gave the Reds runners at second and third with one out, but Osuna preserved the win by striking out Billy Hamilton and Zack Cozart.

Travis, whose 13-game hitting streak ended Tuesday, snapped an 0-for-6 slump by connecting off Wandy Peralta (2-1).

                              BREWERS 7, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Eric Thames hit his first home run in three weeks, Keon Broxton also went deep against an ineffective Jacob deGrom, and Milwaukee beat New York for just its third win in 10 games.

Released by the Mets following a 50-game minor league drug suspension in 2009, Junior Guerra (1-0) defeated New York for the first time. He allowed four hits in six scoreless innings, struck out four and walked three, baffling batters with his splitter.

In his previous outing, deGrom (4-2) threw 118 pitches and became the first Mets starter this year to reach the ninth inning. Against the Brewers, he allowed seven runs, eight hits and five walks in four innings, raising his ERA from 3.23 to 3.97. The right-hander has given up multiple homers in four starts, double his 2016 total.

                              ATHLETICS 3, INDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Sean Manaea allowed three hits in seven innings, Chad Pinder homered twice and drove in all three Oakland runs, and the Athletics defeated Cleveland.

Manaea (4-3) retired the first 10 hitters before Francisco Lindor homered with one out in the fourth. He gave up singles to Daniel Robertson and Edwin Encarnacion, along with a walk to Jose Ramirez.

Pinder, the Athletics' No. 9 hitter, hit a solo homer in the third and broke a 1-all tie with a two-run shot in the fifth.

Mike Clevinger (2-2) gave up both home runs.

Trevor Plouffe drew a leadoff walk in the fifth before Pinder hit a 2-2 pitch into the bleachers in left field to cap the first multi-homer game of his career.

Santiago Casilla worked the ninth for his eighth save.

                              MARLINS 10, PHILLIES 2

MIAMI (AP) - Justin Bour hit two home runs, increasing his season total to 15, and Miami completed its first series sweep of the season by beating Philadelphia before a sparse crowd.

Marcell Ozuna hit his 14th homer for the Marlins, who have won four games in a row, their longest winning streak since last July.

Dan Straily (4-3) struck out 10, allowed one earned run in 6 2/3 innings, and benefited from the offensive support to win his third start in a row.

The Phillies (17-34), off to their worst start since 1961, went 6-22 in May. That's their fewest wins in a month since June 1997. Aaron Nola (2-3) lost his third start in a row. He gave up four runs and needed 73 pitches to get through three innings - his shortest outing of the year.

The Marlins were contending for the worst record in the majors before their recent turnaround, and plenty of room remains on the bandwagon. Announced attendance was 15,197, lowest of the season in Miami, and a head count put the actual crowd at 1,590, perhaps the smallest in the five-year history of Marlins Park.
