    • LEADING OFF: Red Sox, Orioles renew rivalry; Kluber returns
      May 31, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

      RIVALRY RENEWED

The Red Sox visit Baltimore for a four-game series that runs through Sunday. The contentious rivalry between AL East foes ramped up this season when Manny Machado's aggressive slide into Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia in late April led to dangerous inside pitches, harsh words and a warning from MLB officials to stop the feuding. At the center of the storm was Machado, who is currently in a terrible slump.

      SIGHT FOR SORE EYES

Cleveland ace Corey Kluber comes off the disabled list to make his first major league start since May 2 when the Indians host Oakland. Kluber, who has been sidelined with a strained lower back, is 3-2 with a 5.06 ERA in six starts. His return will be a welcome addition for rotation that entered Wednesday with the highest ERA in the American League. He replaces right-hander Danny Salazar, sent to the bullpen with a 3-5 record and 5.50 ERA. Kluber was 18-9 with a 3.14 ERA last season and went 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA in six postseason starts. He won the AL Cy Young Award in 2014 and finished third in the voting last season.

      HOMER HAPPY

After winning eight of their final nine games in May, the Blue Jays welcome the AL East-leading Yankees for the opener of a four-game set. ''It would be nice to continue playing well right now,'' Toronto manager John Gibbons said. ''The timing would be perfect. We'll see.'' Toronto was 8-17 in April, but bounced back to finish May at 26-27 thanks to a barrage of home runs, 49 in all. ''In the American League, especially in our division, you've got to hit home runs,'' Gibbons said. ''That's the key.'' Marco Estrada (4-2, 3.15 ERA) starts the first game for the Blue Jays against CC Sabathia (5-2, 4.42 ERA), seeking his 16th career win against Toronto.

      FISH STICKS

Miami has won four straight, its longest winning streak since last July, heading into a four-game series against visiting Arizona. Left-hander Jeff Locke makes his season debut in the opener vs. Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke (6-3, 3.24 ERA). Locke has been on the DL with left biceps tendinitis. After a difficult stretch when they went 4-19, the Marlins are winning with offense, scoring 73 runs in the past 10 games. Their latest victory Wednesday over Philadelphia came without slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who rested while recovering from hamstring cramps. He's expected to return to the lineup against Arizona. ''We're playing better,'' Miami manager Don Mattingly said. ''Hopefully our best baseball is ahead of us.'' Justin Bour hit 11 home runs for the Marlins in May.

      ON A ROLL

Cardinals veteran Adam Wainwright (5-3, 4.20 ERA) pitches against Brandon McCarthy (5-1, 3.28) and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wainwright is 5-0 with a 3.21 ERA since his last loss on April 16.

      COMING OFF A GEM

Chase Anderson (3-1) starts for the NL Central-leading Brewers in the finale of a four-game series at the New York Mets. Anderson had a no-hit bid going last Saturday until Nick Ahmed's leadoff single in the eighth at Arizona. He set career highs with 11 strikeouts and 114 pitches in seven-plus innings during a 6-1 win. Zack Wheeler (3-2) goes for the Mets.

      • Pitchers to Watch - June
        May 31, 2017

Current form doesn’t always hold but here are four MLB starters that appear to be heading in the right direction into the month of June and four starters that appear to be falling off a stronger early season pace.

Consider buying or selling these pitchers in some fantasy formats or look for upcoming play-on and play-against situations involving these starters in the upcoming weeks.

        Buy/Play:

        Jimmy Nelson – Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers remain a first place team at the end of May even with a less impressive recent run of play. Whether or not Milwaukee can remain a viable playoff threat all summer is certainly a fair debate but the Brewers are one of the better scoring teams in baseball and Jimmy Nelson has proven himself as a rare pitcher that fares well pitching at high scoring Miller Park with a career ERA of 3.83, including 3.60 this season at home. Nelson has delivered a fine month of May to shake off a marginal April with a 2.28 ERA in the month and a 10.1 K/9 over five starts. Given that Milwaukee will be dogged in many matchups home or away including in many NL West draws ahead in June, Nelson may be worth a look in several upcoming starts or as a potential fantasy option in deeper leagues with his ownership rate currently at around 15 percent and a high strikeout ceiling. Nelson’s success in May came with a higher than average .324 BABIP as his ceiling could be even higher and his modest walk and home run rates are very attractive through 10 starts this season.

        Martin Perez – Texas Rangers
Martin Perez won 10 games for the Rangers last season in nearly 200 innings and while he has felt like a pitcher the team is always looking to replace in the rotation, he will present some value opportunities ahead for a Texas squad that is showing signs of making a run. Perez is 2-5 with a 4.19 ERA but he has been saddled with a very high .347 BABIP that is 41 points above his career average. Perez is not a high strikeout pitcher but he has allowed four or fewer runs in 10 of 11 starts this season. Perez has some of his best career splits in the month of June and his career ERA in Arlington is just 3.79 despite the high scoring track record of the now named Globe Life Park. Texas owns an excellent home record at 17-9 and while the Astros are running away with the AL West the Rangers look capable of making a run into wild card contention, recently boosted with the return of Adrian Beltre. Texas will have underdog opportunities behind Perez in June with games against the Astros, Nationals, Yankees, and Indians in the month. Perez normally receives a much higher groundball rate than his current 45 percent clip as he could see his numbers improve over the summer.

Jordan Montgomery – New York Yankees
Rookie Jordan Montgomery is just 2-4 through nine starts this season at just 24-years of age. He has looked the part as quality option on the mound for a Yankees team that continues to provide plenty of run support. Montgomery hasn’t yet pitched seven innings in a start at the MLB level but New York’s bullpen is very good and the unit should get Aroldis Chapman in the near future to add to that strength. Montgomery figures to draw lesser pricing than the more established starters in the New York rotation and he will certainly be worth a look vs. lineups that are less successful vs. southpaw pitching. While his ERA is 4.11 his FIP is just 3.60 through just over 50 innings of work and a third of his base runners have come around to score this season, a figure that is likely to improve. Walks were a problem for Montgomery early in the season but he has allowed just five walks in his last four starts and only allowing five home runs so far this season is a promising sign especially considering that Montgomery has already faced several powerful lineups including the Rays, Cubs, Astros, and Orioles (twice). Montgomery will have his innings under close watch and could show some fatigue later this summer as the next several weeks may be the best time to cash in on the promising rookie.

Clayton Richard – San Diego Padres
Clayton Richard technically got a World Series ring last season as the veteran pitched into late July with the Cubs before being released. He was picked up by the Padres to finish the season and signed for 2017 as well, re-joining the team where he had the best success in his career with solid seasons in 2010 and 2012. The Padres have one of the worst records in baseball with a tepid offensive attack but Richard is pitching well for San Diego and will give his team a chance at some upcoming upsets. Over his last six starts his FIP is just 3.26 with an increased strikeout rate and while he is 1-3 with a 4.23 ERA in that span he has had some tough luck with a .342 BABIP while also facing some of the league’s better offenses in his recent starts. Richard doesn’t allow many home runs and has a low walk rate while getting groundballs at a very strong rate so far this season. Pitching at Petco Park can help his cause with San Diego set to play 16 June home dates and the Padres featuring much more respectable showings at home this season.

        Sell/Fade:

        Kyle Freeland – Colorado Rockies

24-year old Kyle Freeland has been a big piece of the surprising success of the Rockies so far this season, living up to his billing as the #8 pick in the 2014 draft. With five wins and a 3.43 ERA in 10 starts Freeland has been successful but there are some serious red flags with a 4.41 FIP a very low .271 BABIP, and just a 5.6 K/9 strikeout rate. Freeland is also walking batters at a very high rate and after allowing just 10 runs in his first six starts he has allowed 15 runs over his past four starts. Freeland has only made four Coor’s Field starts where his ERA is much higher at 3.94 and it isn’t clear if the Rockies will be able to maintain the greatly improved numbers from the bullpen and the defense the rest of the season. Ultimately Freeland might be the Rockies pitcher to consider fading in a mostly undistinguishable rotation with Colorado looking like a team that is unlikely to maintain its early season pace.

Lance Lynn – St. Louis Cardinals
Perhaps a Comeback Player of the Year candidate, Lance Lynn is pitching well after missing the entire 2016 season. Lynn won 60 games for the Cardinals from 2012-2015 and he is 4-3 with a 2.93 ERA so far this season. While St. Louis appears to be a team that will stay in NL Central and NL Wild Card contention all season, underachieving starters Carlos Martinez and Adam Wainwright look poised for better results the rest of the way. Lynn has incredibly stranded 83 percent of his base runners this season and his .212 BABIP is the third lowest of all qualified MLB starters and 90 points below Lynn’s career average. Lynn owns a 4.72 FIP and he has now allowed at least four runs in three of his last four starts while failing to pick up a win in that stretch as his numbers are heading in the wrong direction. While Lynn is likely to remain a solid starter the rest of the season given his career track record he could be a high risk starter on the road where his numbers are significantly worse or vs. lineups with quality left-handed hitters as so far in 2017 there is huge disparity in his results vs. lefties and righties, with lefties batting .260 and righties batting only .136.

        Gio Gonzalez – Washington Nationals

Gio Gonzalez has taken just one loss this season pitching for a Nationals team on pace to run away with the NL East. Gonzalez owns an ERA of 3.03 that could rival his career season in 2012 but his strikeout rate is on pace to be the lowest since the 2010 season and he owns an alarming walk rate of 4.6 BB/9. A .277 BABIP has helped his cause along with 87 percent of his base runners failing to score as if not for a rather steady career track record the numbers for Gonzalez would stand out as very suspicious including a 4.76 FIP that is nearly two runs higher than his ERA. Gonzalez has been hit hard in his last three road starts as his success has been built on the majority of his starts coming at home this season and five of his starts have also come against the four NL East rivals that are collectively 82-118. Washington has received incredible offensive results in the first two months with unsustainable paces for some of the stars in the lineup and a slump could be ahead with a June schedule that features the Dodgers and Cubs as well as some less familiar foes with interleague matchups early in the month. Gonzalez doesn’t look like a pitcher one would want to lay a big number with in the coming weeks with Washington likely to open as solid chalk on most nights.

        Gerrit Cole – Pittsburgh Pirates
At still just 26-years old former #1 pick Gerrit Cole is on the short list of rising star pitchers in the National League. Cole had a brilliant 2015 season for a very good Pirates team before regressing to an average injury-plagued season in 2016, netting just 116 innings of work. Cole has pitched better than his 2-5 record with a 3.65 ERA but a 4.40 FIP looms over that figure and Cole is getting far fewer strikeouts than in his best stretches, posting just 7.4 K/9 so far this season. Cole has a lower groundball rate than in his successful 2014 and 2015 seasons and he has already allowed 12 home runs this season. Cole has allowed 66 hits in just over 66 innings despite a fairly low .278 BABIP and ultimately he is pitching for a Pirates team that has limited prospects the rest of the way. Pittsburgh has declined offensively and defensively so far this season and while only 3.5 games out of first place late in May, the Pirates are in 5th place in the NL Central with the fewest runs scored and the worst scoring differential in the division. Gregory Polanco has battled injuries this season and Andrew McCutchen hasn’t looked like his past MVP form. If Pittsburgh continues to struggle some key players could be dealt and the respectable bullpen could also lose pieces that could lessen the opportunities for Pittsburgh starters to pick up wins. Cole will still be valued like an upper-tier starter in many matchups even though he hasn’t resembled the pitcher that finished 4th in the NL Cy Young voting two years ago.

        • June Pitchers Report
          May 31, 2017

You know the saying, “May flowers bring June showers.” For Major League Baseball pitchers hurling during the month of June, showers are hopefully not in their immediate plans. Instead, MLB starting pitchers hope to stay in the game long enough to avoid having to clean up early.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in June, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each June over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s June list.

          GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

          Chen, Wei-Yin. - 11-5 (8-2 H)

Chen was 2-3 this season before being shut down after his May 1st start. His right elbow received a platelet-rich plasma injection and there is still no timetable for his return from the DL.

          Lester, Jon - 12-5 (6-1 H)

After a series of fine starts, Lester was roughed up by Los Angeles at the end of May, which raised his ERA to 3.86. But like the weather, the left-hander warms up and has experienced several strong June's. And when pitching at Wrigley Field this season, opposing hitters own only a .179 batting average.

          Kershaw, Clayton - 13-4 (7-1 H)

Baseball's best pitcher continues to shine and with how the L.A. Dodgers enter this month, Kershaw should pile up the victories. While Kershaw is still sensational, he's been plagued for the first time in allowing home runs, with 10 already surrendered.

          Martinez, Carlos - 9-4 (5-2 A)

After a really slow start, the Cards' Martinez has lowered his ERA more than 1.50 runs and is back to typical career numbers. Quietly, his batting averaged allowed is at .217, compared to .244 for his St. Louis career.

          *Sanchez, Anibal - 8-4 (2-0 A)

With low velocity and sharpness to his breaking pitches gone, Sanchez has been sent to the bullpen with his substantial contract and only being used in mop up roles and even then his ERA is still at 9.00.

          *Tillman, Chris - 12-4 (8-2 H)

Tillman started the season with shoulder woes and did not make first start until May 7th. After five starts he still seems to searching for location and command and he will be worth watching given his prior June numbers.

          BAD MONTH PITCHERS

          Eovaldi, Nate - 5-11 (2-5 H)

Still recovering from Tommy John surgery ant not likely to hurl this season.

          Liriano, Francisco - 3-9 (2-6 H)

The 33-year old lefty has been on the DL since mid-May with a bum shoulder and is scheduled to start for Toronto on June 2nd. Once possessing one of the best curveballs in baseball, age and injuries seem to be taking their toll.

          *Miller, Shelby - 4-10 (2-5 H)

After a much better start to this season compared to last, Miller blew out his elbow and is another Tommy John victim.

          Samardzija, Jeff - 5-11 (2-5 H)

San Francisco has made few front office mistakes in the last nine years. After not learning their lesson about long contracts for starting pitchers like Matt Cain, they signed Samardzija to five-deal deal and are not reaping the benefits. There was a reason he was 47-61 BEFORE going the Giants and he is 13-18 with them.

          Santana, Ervin - 2-8 (1-5 A)

The right-hander is easily off to the best start of his career in 2017, pitching for Minnesota. He will enter this month with a 1.75 ERA (career 4.01), however, in past seasons after quick starts, Santana has eventually regressed towards the norm.

          *Weaver, Jered - 5-11 (3-8 H)

With a 0-5 record and 7.94 ERA after nine starts with San Diego, the Padres placed this former ace on the DL. Weaver is a shell of his former prominence and the separation between fastballs, curves and change-ups, no longer fools batters. It’s sad to watch from a hurler who really understood how to pitch side-and-side and up-and-down without an overpowering heater.

                    • Column: As Pujols approaches 600 HRs, does anyone care?
                      June 1, 2017

More than any other sport, baseball is a numbers racket.

From 20 wins in a season to 3,000 hits in a career, there are milestones that even the most cursory fan knows are cause for celebration and adoration.

Regrettably, the stat we used to revere above all others no longer gets us in the mood for keeping count.

                      Home runs.

Albert Pujols is one of the great sluggers in major league history, but his pursuit of 600 homers with the Los Angeles Angels has gone largely unnoticed in recent weeks. Sure, there's a big countdown sign in center field at the Big A, currently sitting on 599, and many fans broke out their cellphones each time he came to bat Wednesday night in a 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves, ready to document history.

                      That's about it.

                      For a reason.

Thanks to the steroids era, guys who can knock the ball over the fence with some regularity are no longer held in such lofty esteem. We treat this generation's version of Hammerin' Hank and the Sultan of Swat with a collective shrug and a healthy dose of skepticism, even though the game today is dominated by hard-throwing pitchers and could actually use an offensive boost.

No one, it seems, has forgotten when juiced-up guys made a mockery of the game.

So, when Pujols hits No. 600, there will be a small celebration.

                      Not much more.

                      That's a shame, really.

''It's incredible, I think, just to put it in the context,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ''The guys that hit 300 home runs, that's like 10 years of hitting 30 home runs. And to double that, it just defines ... the elite players that have been in the batter's box throughout this game.''

Indeed, Pujols will become just the ninth player in major league history to reach 600 homers and, in all likelihood, be a first-ballot inductee into Cooperstown.

But it's worth noting that Pujols will be the sixth member of that exclusive club whose career touched on the steroid era, which runs roughly through the 1990s until the mid-2000s when baseball finally adopted a doping policy that had a little bite to it (though still not nearly enough).

Of the other five, only Ken Griffey Jr. is in the Hall of Fame. The career leader, Barry Bonds with 762, has yet to be voted in because of his links to doping scandals, though the ill feelings against his candidacy seem to be waning. Alex Rodriguez, who copped to doping and served a lengthy suspension near the end of his career, faces an uphill battle when he finally becomes eligible for the Hall consideration despite going deep 696 times. Sammy Sosa has no chance of getting in with 609 homers, his lofty numbers also viewed as highly suspicious by the voters.

Jim Thome (612) will be on the ballot for 2018 and might have a shot as a first-year inductee since he was never suspected of drug use. But just the fact that his candidacy isn't a no-brainer shows how the stature of the home run has fallen.

It wasn't this way before the steroids era.

Forget 600 homers. Being a member of the 500 club used to be a sure-fire ticket into the Hall. The first 15 players to reach that landmark were all voted in - 12 on their first try. A dozen more players have joined the list in recent years, and eight have been on the Cooperstown ballot.

Of those, only Ken Griffey Jr. (630) and Frank Thomas (521) received enough votes to get in.

Joining Bonds and Sosa on the outside are Mark McGwire (583), Rafael Palmeiro (569), Manny Ramirez (555) and Gary Sheffield (509). McGwire - an acknowledged doper - didn't come close to receiving the required 75 percent in his 10 years on the ballot. Palmeiro - who was suspended for a failed test - dropped out of consideration after only four years because of a lack of support. Two other tainted players, Ramirez and Sheffield, seem unlikely to get into Cooperstown based on their early voting totals.

Which brings us back to Pujols.

He simply wants to slip in the back door of the 600 club before anyone notices.

''I don't play here for numbers,'' he said. ''I'm aware of the history, don't get me wrong. I respect it. But I think that's kind of a distraction that I don't want to bring into the game for me.''

                      Pujols shouldn't have to worry.

It's hard to find anyone making a big deal about the long ball.

                      • Mr. Met mascot gives fans finger
                        June 1, 2017

Mr. Met, the lovable mascot for New York's National League baseball team, wasn't showing the fans how many runs the Mets scored in their 7-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.

The baseball-headed mascot was caught on video giving fans the middle finger and seemed to enjoy doing so with his permanently wide smile.

"We apologize for the inappropriate action of this employee,'' the club said in a statement. "We do not condone this type of behavior. We are dealing with this matter internally.''

The Mets said that one person wears the costume all season, but that person will not wear it again.

Mr. Met has served as the team mascot since 1964. His Twitter account has nearly 50,000 followers.

ST. LOUIS (AP) Adam Wainwright hit a two-run homer off Brandon McCarthy and pitched six innings of four-hit ball, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0 on Thursday for a four-game split.

Wainwright (6-3) struck out six and walked two, pitching out of two-on, one-out jams in the fourth and fifth, and extending his scoreless streak to 16 1/3 innings. Matt Bowman, Trevor Rosenthal and Seung Hwan Oh pitched an inning each to complete a five-hitter. Oh threw a one-hit ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances.

Wainwright followed Paul Dejong's second-inning single with a drive over the left-field bullpen for his 10th career homer. Wainwright has six hits and seven RBIs this season.

McCarthy (5-2) gave up seven hits in four innings, struck out six and walked one.

                            DIAMONDBACKS 3, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Zack Greinke allowed one earned run in seven innings to earn his seventh victory, and Arizona rallied to snap Miami's four-game winning streak.

Nick Ahmed had three of Arizona's six hits, including a two-run single in the eighth to put the Diamondbacks ahead. They won for the 13th time in the past 17 games.

Greinke (7-3), who moved into a tie for the NL lead in wins, struck out eight and allowed four hits. He also singled and scored the Diamondbacks' first run as he improved to 5-0 in nine games against the Marlins.

Archie Bradley struck out Marcell Ozuna with two on to end the eighth. Fernando Rodney, who blew a save in Wednesday's extra-inning win at Pittsburgh, completed a five-hitter by pitching a perfect ninth for his 14th save.

Jeff Locke allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings in his season debut for Miami, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead. With the Marlins ahead 2-1, Kyle Barraclough (1-1) walked the first two batters in the eighth. The right-hander has given up 21 walks in 22 1/3 innings this season.

                            ORIOLES 7, RED SOX 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Wade Miley allowed one run in seven innings, Mark Trumbo hit the first of Baltimore's four home runs off Eduardo Rodriguez and the Orioles beat Boston.

Chris Davis and Adam Jones went deep for a second straight night and Jonathan Schoop capped the outburst with a three-run drive in the sixth that made it 7-1.

Miley (2-3) gave up five hits and a walk against the team he pitched for in 2015. Seeking his first win since April 14, the lefty did not allow a runner past first base after the second inning.

Rodriguez (4-2) allowed seven runs in 5 2/3 innings, and the four homers tied a career high. The former Orioles farmhand came in with a four-game winning streak and a 1.34 ERA in six starts at Camden Yards.

                            YANKEES 12, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - CC Sabathia won his fourth consecutive start, Aaron Hicks had a career-high six RBIs and Gary Sanchez homered twice to lead New York over Toronto.

Sabathia (6-2) allowed one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings, struck out seven and walked none. He has won four straight starts for the first time since April and May 2012.

Hicks hit a three-run double in the first, singled in the third, had an RBI double in the seventh and a two-run double in the ninth.

Sanchez homered in consecutive at-bats against Marco Estrada (4-3), a solo drive in the second and a two-run shot in the fourth.

Brett Gardner his 999th and 1,000th hits for the Yankees, who reopened a three-game lead in the AL East.

Estrada allowed a season-high seven runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.

                            ROCKIES 6, MARINERS 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Mark Reynolds and Nolan Arenado homered to back Kyle Freeland, and Colorado stopped a three-game losing streak with a win over Seattle.

Colorado closed out four straight games against the Mariners in interleague play by jumping on Yovani Gallardo (2-6) with four runs in the second inning. Reynolds provided the big blow with a two-run homer to deep left-center field, his 14th this season. Arenado led off the third inning with his 13th home run, and the Rockies stopped Seattle's four-game winning streak.

Freeland (6-3) won for the third time in four starts despite hitting three batters. The only runs Freeland allowed came on Guillermo Heredia's solo home run and the sacrifice fly where shortstop Jean Segura was hurt in the fourth inning.

Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

                            INDIANS 8, ATHLETICS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Corey Kluber pitched six shutout innings and struck out 10 in his first start since May 2, and Cleveland scored four runs during a strange sixth inning to beat Oakland.

Kluber (4-2) had been sidelined with a strained lower back, an injury that kept Cleveland's ace sidelined for a month. Despite the long layoff, however, Kluber looked like his dominant self, allowing just two hits and recording his 26th career double-digit strikeout game.

The Indians scored four runs - three unearned - off Jharel Cotton (3-6) in the wild sixth. The game was momentarily delayed when sprinklers in left field went on automatically.

Jharel Cotton (3-6) allowed five runs, one earned, and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out four.

                            BREWERS 2, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Chase Anderson pitched seven shutout innings and the Brewers benefited - temporarily, anyway - when a Milwaukee bat boy bumped into Mets infielder Wilmer Flores on a foul popup in a victory over New York.

NL Central-leading Milwaukee won the last two at Citi Field to salvage a four-game split.

Anderson (4-1) gave up three hits, walked one and struck out seven. In his previous start, he took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning to beat Arizona.

                              ********************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                              13) Nike’s Phil Knight turns 80 years old this year; to commemorate this, there is a 16-team college hoop event (actually two 8-team tournaments) in Portland Thanksgiving weekend, with lot of heavy hitters in the field. Here are the first-round games:

                              North Carolina-Portland, Arkansas-Oklahoma,
                              Georgetown-Michigan State, UConn-Oregon

                              Duke-Portland State, Butler-Texas
                              Florida-Stanford, Gonzaga-Ohio State

This is a one-time event, being staged to celebrate Phil Knight’s 80th birthday.

                              12) There will also be a solid mid-major tournament in the Bahamas Nov 17-19, with Bradley, Coastal Carolina, Duquesne, Iona, No Kentucky, Tex-San Antonio, Vermont, Weber State.

Lot of solid mid-major teams here; this’ll be a good tournament.

                              11) There have been two major league games this season where both starting pitchers gave up 10+ hits; surprising that Sale/Quintana Tuesday nite was one of them (other one was a Nova-Colon matchup).

                              10) Bryce Harper’s suspension was reduced to three games, Hunter Strickland got six games but the big loser in the Nats-Giants fracas Monday was Washington’s Michael Morse, who went on the 7-day DL with a concussion sustained in the scuffle.

                              9) Mike Trout’s thumb injury is same one the Clippers’ Chris Paul had; Trout talked with Paul before his surgery this week.

Trout had surgery on his left thumb Wednesday, but was at the ballpark that night and came out in the dugout for each of Albert Pujols’ at-bats, in case Pujols hit his 600th home run.

                              8) Weird play in the Brewers-Mets game Thursday; Milwaukee had bases loaded with one out and Eric Sogard up. Sogard hits a foul pop by the Brewers’ dugout; the bat boy grabs his chair, but runs into the Mets’ 3B and the ball drops.

The home plate umpire calls the batter out, then the umps huddled and the call was reversed, which sent Terry Collins off the edge- he was ejected, but then Sogard hit into a double play, so the Mets benefitted from the changed call.

                              7) Last time the National League won the season series against the American League was 2003, and they ain’t gonna win it this year, either.

                              6) Golden State 113, Cleveland 91— Warriors had four turnovers, Cleveland had 20. LeSean McCoy of the Buffalo Bills bet $200,000 on Golden State to win the series- he gets $262,500 back if the Warriors win the championship. He made the wager at Planet Hollywood in Vegas.

I’m sure the NFL was thrilled to see the picture of his $200K ticket on Twitter.

                              5) Someone on Twitter captured Mr Met giving a fan the finger as he ran down the stadium tunnel after the Mets’ 7-1 home loss to Milwaukee Wednesday nite. Was that kind of a night.

Problem is, Mr Met can’t flash his middle finger, since he has only four fingers on each hand- there is no middle finger. If you’re an aficionado of loopholes, this is a good one for Mr Met’s attorneys, if the feisty mascot sues to get its job back.

No truth to the rumor that Kathy Griffin has applied to be the new Mr Met.

                              4) ESPN’s Mark Adams posted a list of each Division I basketball budget last year on Facebook; somehow he left Siena’s out, but all the other ones are there.

Kentucky’s basketball budget last year was $18,910,412; next highest in the SEC was Texas A&M, at $9,301,170. Gonzaga got to the Final Four with a budget of $7,261,657.

                              3) Cincinnati Reds have scored in the first inning in each of their last six games; they went 2-4 in those games.

There were 1,060 home runs hit in May, 2nd-most in any month ever, behind May 2000. Of the 1,060 homers last month, 630 of them were solo blasts; the other 430 came with men on, including 16 grand slams.

                              2) Los Angeles Angels have scored two runs in six home games this year; with their pitching, you’d figure that would be bad news, but they won five of the six games. Go figure.

                              1) Oakland A’s have already used 11 batters in the #2 spot this year. In 53 games. Those 11 players have combined to hit .175 while batting in the 2-spot. Oy.
