          • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
            May 10, 2017

Hottest team: Dodgers (4-0 past four games, 9-2 past 11 overall)

The Dodgers have been pushing all the right buttons lately. L.A. had a little Chavez Ravine magic in Tuesday's game, coming from behind to top Ivan Nova and the Pirates in extra innings. Chalk eaters have been making out like bandits lately, risking 814 to win 400 during the team's four-game winning streak. They'll turn to Kenta Maeda to keep it rolling. He posted a win in San Diego last time out, and he has allowed just three earned runs with 16 strikeouts over the past 12 innings after giving up 17 earned runs across 19 innings in his first four appearances.

Coldest team White Sox (2-7 past nine games)

The White Sox have fallen on hard times, dropping four in a row and seven of the past nine overall. They turn to southpaw Derek Holland to end their losing skid. He is the last pitcher to record a win, and he has picked up victories in two of the past three Chicago wins dating back to April 29. While the White Sox have dropped four in a row against winning teams and four of their past five against right-handed starters, they're a perfect 4-0 in Holland's past four outings against divisional foes. The White Sox are also 21-10 across their past 31 at home against teams with a road winning percentage of .600 or better.

Hottest pitcher: Derek Holland, White Sox (3-2, 2.20 ERA)

Holland might not have the most attractive record in five decisions, but he has turned in a sparkling 2.20 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP and .191 opponent batting average through 35 2/3 innings across six starts. He has also turned in an impressive 30/12 K/BB ratio which serves him well. The Twins rank 27th in strikeouts, but Holland will still post solid numbers at home. The opposition is hitting just .167 against him at U.S. Cellular Field, and he struck out five Twins while allowing just two earned runs over six innings in his first meetings with Minnesota back on April 7.

Coldest pitcher: Kenta Maeda, Dodgers (2-2, 5.81 ERA)

Maeda has started to piece it together lately, and he looks to keep the Dodgers hot. Overall the pitcher has an awful 5.81 ERA and 1.32 WHIP while the opposition has a robust .271 batting average against him. That includes 20 earned runs over 31 innings, including seven homers allowed over 31 innings. The Pirates will likely be angry after blowing a late lead in Tuesday's game, and they won't give Maeda much to work with. Pittsburgh's offense does rank 28th in the majors with just 121 runs scored and a .230 team batting average, so there is hope.

Biggest UNDER run: Diamondbacks (5-1 past six games, 8-3 past 11 outings)

The 'under' run by Arizona will certainly be tested with Tigers LHP Matt Boyd being opposed by minor-league call-up SP Zack Godley. The 'over' is also 4-0 in Detroit's past four overall, and 6-0 in their past six against a right-handed starting pitcher. However, there is hope, as the 'under' is 6-2-1 in Boyd's past nine road starts and 3-1-1 in his past five overall. The 'under' is 4-1 in Arizona's past five interleague games against a team with a left-handed starter, but the 'over' is 7-0 in Godley's past seven assignments and 5-0 in his past five at home. That 'under' streak will be tested hard.

Biggest OVER run: Athletics (8-1 past nine games)

After an 'under' result in Monday's series opener against the Halos, it was back to 'overs' in Tuesday's game, a 7-3 setback. That's now eight over results over the past nine games, and a 7-3 mark over the past 10 at home for the Athletics. The over is also 5-1 in Oakland's past six tries against a right-handed starter and 4-0 in their past four games following a loss In addition, the over is a perfect 5-0 in their past five tries against a starter with a WHIP of 1.30 or greater. The Angels are also on an over kick, going 5-2-1 in their past eight outings.

Matchup to watch: Brewers vs. Red Sox

The Red Sox and Brewers had a slugfest in Tuesday's interleague opener, as Boston was bested 13-7 while Eric Thames belted his league-leading 13th home run. Boston has won just six of its past 19 games on the road, although they're an impressive 8-3 in the past 11 road games against a team with a losing home mark. The Brewers are just 1-4 in Tyler Anderson's past five starts at home, but they're 5-2 in their past seven at home overall. Milwaukee has also turned in victories in five of the past six against teams with a winning overall record.

Betcha didn’t know: The Pirates turn to Chad Kuhl in Wednesday's outing, and he likely will not have to face Andrew Toles, who left Tuesday's game with a knee injury. Kuhl has yielded two or fewer earned runs in five of his six starts overall, but he is 0-1 with a 2.76 ERA across three road outings. He was also 2-0 with a 4.09 ERA in two assignments against Los Angeles in 2016, so don't overlook him. Maeda of the Dodgers coughed up four runs across five innings in a loss June 25, 2016 in his only previous career start against the Bucs.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-230) vs. Pirates

Biggest public underdog: Blue Jays (+145) vs. Indians

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-180 to -230) vs. Pirates

            • LEADING OFF: Mattingly on ejection streak, K-Rod loses job
              May 10, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

              TRIFECTA?

Miami's Don Mattingly has managed in just three innings over the first two games of a series against St. Louis because of a pair of ejections. Mattingly was thrown out by Hunter Wendelstedt in the second inning Monday, then got tossed arguing balls and strikes with Andy Fletcher on Tuesday. Of course, Mattingly is likely frustrated with more than just crew chief Joe West's umpiring unit - his Marlins entered Tuesday on a 5-12 slide.

              TROUT UPDATE

The Angels are still hopeful of avoiding a disabled list stint for injured star Mike Trout. The reigning AL MVP sat out a fourth straight game Tuesday with a tight left hamstring, but planned to hit in the cage and play catch. He also plans to test the leg running and doing work in the outfield Wednesday. Trout is trying to dodge what would be the first trip to the DL in his career.

              BELTWAY BATTLES

Stephen Strasburg and the NL East-leading Nationals face the Orioles in the third leg of a four-game series. Strasburg (3-1, 2.66 ERA) will be making his first start outside of the division this season. He labored through 5 2/3 scoreless innings against Philadelphia in his last start, walking four and throwing 119 pitches in a 4-2 win. Wade Miley (1-1, 2.27) was pulled from his previous start after two outs when he was struck by successive line drives. Before that, he had walked 11 batters over 12 innings in his last two starts.

              CLOSED OUT

Francisco Rodriguez is out as Tigers closer, replaced at the back of the bullpen by Justin Wilson. Rodriguez ranks fourth all-time with 437 career saves, but he's blown four leads in 11 opportunities this season, including two over the weekend in Oakland. The 35-year-old Rodriguez trails Lee Smith by 41 saves for third on the career list, but he's struggled this year behind a fastball that's dropped to an average of 88 mph.

              FIRST TIME

Hanley Ramirez is set to make his first defensive appearance this season with the Red Sox playing an interleague series in Milwaukee. Ramirez wasn't in the lineup for Tuesday's opener, but Boston manager John Farrell says he plans to start Ramirez at first base in Game 2. Ramirez was Boston's everyday first baseman last season but has been limited to serving as designated hitter this year because of a lingering right shoulder injury.

              WELCOME ABOARD

Tommy Milone will start for the Mets against San Francisco following a whirlwind few days. The left-hander was claimed off waivers from Milwaukee on Sunday and traveled from his California home back to Milwaukee following the claim, then arrived at Citi Field about 90 minutes before Monday's game. Milone hasn't pitched since a relief appearance April 29. New York will be Milone's fifth major league team in seven years.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Carlos Ruiz hit a three-run double against his old team, Robinson Cano and Danny Valencia homered and the Seattle Mariners beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-6 Wednesday.

Ruiz earned another standing ovation a day after he returned and was honored with a video tribute that highlighted his career with the Phillies. The former All-Star catcher was 3 for 30 this season before clearing the bases with a liner off the left-field wall in the seventh against Joaquin Benoit (0-2).

Seattle swept the two-game interleague series. The Phillies have lost 10 of 12.

Tony Zych (2-0) pitched a scoreless inning.

DENVER (AP) - German Marquez (1-2) allowed three hits over eight innings, struck out eight and got his first major league hit with a two-run single in the seventh off Kyle Hendricks (2-2) .

Greg Holland threw a perfect ninth for his 14th save in as many chances to help the Rockies take two of three from Chicago.

Ian Desmond hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the fourth that was set up by shortstop Javier Baez's error.

                  GIANTS 6, METS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Hunter Pence hit a tying single and Christian Arroyo had a three-run double against Jeurys Familia (1-1) in a four-run ninth as San Francisco, a major league-worst 12-23, took advantage of third baseman Wilmer Flores' error to stop a five-game losing streak.

Flores nearly tied the score with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, hitting a two-run double off the top of the left-center fence for his third hit. Derek Law, subbing for injured closer Mark Melancon, retired Kevin Plawecki on a dribbler in front of home plate for his second save.

Bryan Morris (1-0) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Buster Posey homered in every game of the series, connecting in three straight for the third time in his career and first since June 2013.

                  DODGERS 5, PIRATES 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kenta Maeda pitched into the ninth inning, Cody Bellinger homered and made a tumbling catch in left field and Los Angeles beat Pittsburgh to complete a three-game sweep.

Maeda (3-2) got within two outs of his first career complete game. Francisco Cervelli hit a two-run homer in the ninth, though, and Maeda was pulled a batter later, completing 8 1/3 innings while allowing two runs and five hits. He struck out five and left to a rousing ovation.

Bellinger hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Chad Kuhl (1-3), then got dirty to rob Gregory Polanco of a hit in the fourth inning. The rookie started in place of injured Andrew Toles, and fans in the left field pavilion chanted ''Cody! Cody!'' after the tumbling grab.

                  ASTROS 4, BRAVES 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Correa had two doubles and two RBIs for Houston, off to its best 34-game start at 23-11. Correa's fifth-inning double off Jaime Garcia (1-2) drove in two runs for a 3-2 lead.

Joe Musgrove (2-3) allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, and Ken Giles pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save in 10 chances.

Washington trailed 6-2 in the seventh before coming back. Down by two in the ninth, the Nationals rallied against Brad Brach (0-1), serving as Baltimore's closer while Zach Britton is on the disabled list.

Jayson Werth led off the ninth with a homer, and Bryce Harper doubled. With one out, an intentional walk and a single loaded the bases for Wieters, who hit a liner to right. Wieters signed with Washington in February following an eight-year run with Baltimore.

Matt Albers (2-0) - another former Oriole - struck out three straight batters for the win.

Godley (1-0) allowed one run and struck out six. Tigers starter Matthew Boyd (2-2) allowed three earned runs and eight hits in six innings.

                  RANGERS 4, PADRES 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Delino DeShields scored the tiebreaking run on a throwing error in the seventh, two innings after going home on a balk.

DeShields drew a one-out walk from reliever Brad Hand (0-2) in the seventh before Shin-Soo Choo also walked. Elvis Andrus then hit a potential double-play grounder, but second baseman Yangervis Solarte's wide throw to first went into the camera well.

Jeremy Jeffress (1-2) allowed singles to the Nos. 8 and 9 hitters to start the top of the seventh after replacing Yu Darvish, but got out of the inning without allowing a run. Matt Bush worked the ninth for his second save in three chances.

MIAMI (AP) - Pinch-hitter Dexter Fowler, out of the starting lineup for the past six games because of a sore lat, hit a go-ahead, two-run triple in the sixth off Jarlin Garcia (0-1) as St. Louis overcame a four-run deficit for the second game in a row. Fowler drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning Tuesday after St. Louis rallied from a 5-1 eighth-inning deficit.

The Cardinals went 6-0 on their swing through Atlanta and Miami. It's the first time they've gone undefeated on a trip of at least six games in their 126-year history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                    — There will be 40 bowl games this fall; national title game is in Atlanta’s new stadium. Looks like the first bowls are slated for December 16.

                    — Dodgers’ OF Andrew Toles tore his ACL Tuesday, is out for the year.

                    — adidas sold its golf business for $425M; in 2016, their revenue was 30% of what it was five years ago.

                    — Rams, Browns aren’t favored right now in any of their games this coming season. New England is favored in all of its games.

                    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                    13) Serious question; what does this guy James Comey do now? I mean, he gets fired as FBI Director, does he collect unemployment? Write a book? Drink himself silly? Consult with his lawyer to make sure he isn’t in trouble? Hang out at home and watch NBA playoff games? Coach his kid’s Little League team?

I’m guessing he could write a very interesting book; doubt he has done anything horrible enough that would make coaching Little League a suitable punishment.

Seriously, I was a Little League coach for four years. Never again.

                    12) To get a lot of RBI, it helps to have a lot of men on base when you bat. Here are the guys who’ve come to bat with the most men on base this season:

                    Daniel Murphy 115, Rizzo/Cano 113, Maikel Franco 109.

                    11) Here are the players who’ve driven in the highest %age of runners who were on base when they hit (minimum 100 PA): Charlie Blackmon 25.3%, Nomar Mazara 25.0%, Chris Owings 24.6%.

                    10) A fairly tall guy went to the A’s game in Oakland Wednesday afternoon dressed as an elf; no idea why, but he got himself a decent amount of TV time and he seemed to be enjoying himself on a sunny day in the Bay Area.

                    9) A’s 2, Angels 1—Andrew Triggs has five wins and a 2.21 ERA, 9th-best in the AL. Muy bueno!!! .

Yonder Alonso is batting .444 with runners in scoring position; rest of the A’s are hitting .175 with RISP.

                    8) Tampa Bay Rays are 17-19, but if games ended after the 5th inning, they’d be 23-8-5. Rays are 4-11 in games when winning run scores after the 6th inning- they’re 2-6 in one-run games.

                    7) Our fantasy league has 25-man rosters; you add a 26th guy if someone goes on the DL, then after the season, you cut a guy to get back to 25.

Last winter, it was an easy choice for me to get back to 25. Colorado signed Ian Desmond, had David Dahl and Manny Parra to play LF or 1B, so I sent Mark Reynolds packing, since it was unsure if he was even going to be on the 25-man roster. No bueno.

Dahl is hurt, Desmond was also hurt but is back now, while Reynolds is batting .333 and appears headed to the freakin’ All-Star Game. Wow. I can’t even call myself an idiot for this one; nobody saw it coming.

                    6) Cubs’ OF Kyle Schwarber played college baseball at Indiana; only two other colleges offered him a baseball scholarship: Miami OH and Cincinnati. Scouting really is an inexact science.

                    5) San Antonio Spurs drafted Manu Ginobili when James Harden was 10 years old.

                    4) Still wish they’d let kids jump right from high school to the NBA; if they don’t get drafted, then they can go to college, but for at least two years. Seems like a better idea.

                    3) Adam Wilk, who was an emergency starting pitcher for the Mets Sunday when Matt Harvey was suspended, was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins, so he is still in the major leagues and is having a very good week.

                    2) Our thoughts/prayers to Chris Berman, who lost his wife in a car accident this week. From reading Twitter, it is obvious that Berman is very well-liked by co-workers, past and present. Cathy Berman was a school teacher; she is survived by her husband and two children. RIP, ma’am.

                    1) Over the last three years at PLAYERS Championship, Freddie Jacobson has the best score on par 5’s: -24. Chappell, McIlroy and Garcia are all next at -23.

                            • LEADING OFF: Keuchel, Bundy seek 6th wins; Trout eyes return
                              May 11, 2017

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                              WINNER, WINNER

Houston's Dallas Keuchel and Baltimore's Dylan Bundy can become the majors' first six-win pitchers this season. The pair is among a pack of hurlers tied for the league lead with five victories. Keuchel (5-0, 1.88) can do Bundy's Orioles a favor by beating the Yankees in New York, while Bundy (5-1, 2.17) will pitch the finale of a four-game series against NL East-leading Washington.

                              BACK AT IT?

Mike Trout is hoping to get back in the lineup after missing five straight games with a tight left hamstring. The Angels are headed home to open a series against Detroit, and manager Mike Scioscia thinks Trout may be ready to go for the opener. Trout was set to test the leg running and doing work in the outfield Wednesday, and there was no indication of any setbacks from Los Angeles.

                              HERE'S YOUR CHANCE

With Dodgers left fielder Andrew Toles done for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, rookie Cody Bellinger may have a spot for the rest of the year. Bellinger has been excellent filling in for injured Adrian Gonzalez at first base, hitting .315 with six homers through 14 games, but Gonzalez is likely to resume everyday duty when he returns. Bellinger - an outstanding defender at first base who has also played all three outfield positions in the minors - started in left field Wednesday and made a tumbling catch, prompting chants of ''Cody! Cody!'' at Dodger Stadium. He could see plenty of action in left field in Toles' place.

                              PITCHING POWER

Kansas City and Tampa Bay wrap a four-games series with two of the hottest pitchers in the AL. Royals left-hander Jason Vargas is 4-1 with a league-leading 1.19 ERA. His opponent, right-hander Jake Odorizzi (2-1, 2.88), has given up only eight hits in his last four starts.

                              FROM RIGHT TO LEFT

The San Diego Padres flipped their next two scheduled starters to have lefty Clayton Richard in the series finale at Texas, and right-hander Jhoulys Chacin starting Friday at the White Sox. ''Everybody's healthy, everybody's fine,'' manager Andy Green said. ''Texas has struggled a little bit more with left-handed pitching this season than right-handed pitching, and vice versa in Chicago. ... No rocket science.'' The Rangers are hitting .192 against lefties, 30 points less than what they've done against right-handers.

                              BIG SHAW

Brewers third baseman Travis Shaw gets his last crack at his old team when the Red Sox wrap up a three-game interleague series in Milwaukee. The offseason deal that sent Shaw and two minor leaguers to the Brewers in exchange for relief pitcher Tyler Thornburg so far favors Milwaukee. Thornburg (right shoulder) is on the 60-day disabled list. Shaw is a regular with seven homers, 25 RBIs and a .538 slugging percentage going into Wednesday, all stats that would be leading Boston.

Hottest team: Mariners (4-0 past four games, 6-1 past seven overall)

The Mariners have broken out the whooping sticks at 'The Vault', posting 21 total runs in the their two games of their interleague series in Philadelphia. The Mariners are averaging 7.6 runs per game over the past seven outings, helping 'over' bettors at the window, too. The over is 7-2 across the past nine games for Seattle. The M's now move on to Toronto, looking to stay hot against right-handed pitching. They're 5-1 in their past six vs. RHP and 9-4 in their past 13 games on astroturf. They're also an impressive 9-4 in their past 13 road games against a team with a losing home mark.

Coldest team: Pirates (0-4 past four, 3-8 past 11 overall)

The Pirates were broomed in Dodger Stadium to kick off their road trip, and now they set their sights on the Diamondbacks to try and turn things around. They have ace Gerrit Cole on the hill against Snakes' ace Zack Greinke in a game which should be very entertaining. However, the Bucs are 1-5 in Cole's past six road outings and 3-9 in his past 12 starts overall. For what it's worth, the Pirates are 8-1 in Cole's past nine appearances on Thursday and the Bucs are 49-20 in their past 69 against National League West foes.

Hottest pitcher: Dylan Bundy, Orioles (5-1, 2.17 ERA)

Bundy has been on fire lately, living up to years of hype. He has posted victories in four of his past five outings, last tasting defeat way back on April 11 in Boston. He exacted revenge on the Red Sox with a victory in his most recent road outing May 1, and he has a 2-1 record with a 2.33 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in three road outings. The O's have been hot, winning six of their past seven while claiming nine of their past 11 against National League East foes. They have also won five straight starts with Bundy on the hill and they're 5-1 in his past six assignments against teams with a winning overall mark.

Coldest pitcher: Clayton Richard, Padres (2-4, 4.87 ERA)

Richard has been tattooed over his past three ouitngs, posting an 0-2 mark with an 8.36 ERA. He has failed to last longer than 5 1/3 innings during the stretch, causing stress on his team's bullpen in the process. San Diego is in a tailspin, losing six of their past seven overall, and facing the hot bats of the Rangers with an ice-cold Richard on the hill isn't likely to be the elixir to cure their ills. While the Padres are 5-1 in Richard's past six interleague starts, they're just 5-23 in their past 28 interleague road games against a southpaw.

Biggest UNDER run: Rockies (6-1 past seven games)

The 'under' and Rockies aren't two things that usually go together, especially at Coors Field. However, the 'under' is 5-1 over the past six at home for Colorado, as they have been getting solid pitching lately. The 'under' is also 4-0 in their past four against divisional foes, 13-3 in their past 16 home games against a team with a losing home record and 4-1 in their past five at home against teams with a winning overall mark. The 'under' run will be put to the test with Brett Anderson on the bump against his former mates, however, as the 'over' has cashed in five of his past seven assignments.

Biggest OVER run: Twins (8-1-1 past 10 games)

Bettors have been a fan of the Twins at the betting window lately, particularly when it comes to betting 'overs'. Minnesota pitching allowed 31 totals runs in a three-game home set against Boston from May 5-7. They looked to right the ship, allowing just two runs in Tuesday's series opener at Chicago White Sox, but they busted out the lumber with seven runs to push the total. They have scored six or more runs in four straight road games and four of their past five away from home. They have also plated five or more runs in seven of the past nine overall.

Matchup to watch: Nationals vs. Orioles

The Orioles were sunk by a familiar face in Wednesday's interleague battle. Matt Wieters drove in the game-tying and game-winning runs in Wednesday's game against Baltimore. This is the fourth of four games, and two of the first three outings have resulted in one-run games. The Orioles are on a 4-0 'over' run, too, although the 'under' has hit in five of Bundy's past six outings against a team with a winning overall record while going 7-2-1 in his past 10 outings on grass. The Nationals have won four of their past five at home, although they're 2-8 in their past 10 against AL East teams and 0-4 in A.J. Cole's past four starts.

Betcha didn’t know: Tigers SP Michael Fulmer is 3-1 with a 2.77 ERA on the season, and he posted a season-high nine strikeouts over eight innings in a victory at Oakland last time out. He has allowed four or fewer outs in four of his six assignments so far this season while limiting the opposition to a .210 batting average. He might be tested more with Mike Trout (hamstring) expected to return to action. The Halos' All-Star carries a 17-game hitting streak into play, longest active run in the majors.

Biggest public favorite: Blue Jays (-140) vs. Mariners

Biggest public underdog: Reds (+130) at Giants

Biggest line move: Mariners (+160 to +140) at Blue Jays
