  • Weekend Outlook
    April 28, 2017

Before the season started the Colorado Rockies were 60/1 (Bet $100 to win $6,000) to win the World Series and the Arizona Diamondbacks were 100/1 (Bet $100 to win $10,000). After just one month of play those odds have been slashed in half as both have controlled the National League West division. They hook up in Phoenix for a three-game set in what is the most intriguing series of the weekend.

Most of us came into spring training with the mindset that the Giants and Dodgers would be battling once again for the NL West crown. The Dodgers have Clayton Kershaw and the Giants have Bruce Bochy. That's just how the order of things work in the NL West, or at least that's the way things have been. So far in 2017, the Dodgers and Giants both have losing records.

Arizona (15-9) took over first-place by a half-game last night with a 6-2 win over the Padres following Colorado's 16-5 afternoon loss to the Nationals. The Rockies (14-9) pitching staff showed its first sign of being over-matched by any team allowing the Nats 46 runs over the four-game series in which Washington won the last three.

The Diamondbacks recipe for success has been playing at Chase Field where they've gone 11-3 averaging 7.2 runs a game while batting .320. In 10 road games they've gone 4-6. They gotten steady starting pitching with a bullpen that has been surprisingly good. New closer Fernando Rodney had started the season going 6-for-6 in save opportunities until giving up five runs in the ninth against San Diego on Wednesday.

All the Arizona bats seem to be clicking at the same time with seven of its regulars hitting .291 or higher. Buried within all the impressive hitting numbers is the fact that their 27 steals lead baseball. The combination of speed and power have helped Arizona be the most profitable team at +8.4 units. Colorado is fourth-best at +6.0 units.

The Diamondbacks have gone 12-7 at home against the Rockies in the past three seasons and the Over has gone 12-5-2. In all meetings the past three seasons, including Coors Field, 25 of the 36 games have gone Over. This season, Arizona has gone 10-3-1 to the Over at Chase Field. Look for the Over trend to continue this weekend.

Scheduled rotation: Robbie Ray (2-0) vs Kyle Freeland (2-1), Zack Greinke (2-2) vs. Tyler Anderson (1-3), Patrick Corbin (2-3) vs. German Marquez (0-1)
Series Price: Diamondbacks -175, Rockies +155

Here's a look some of the series I'm excited to watch this weekend:

Baltimore (14-6) at New York Yankees (13-7)
Scheduled rotation: Gausman (1-2) vs. Sabathia (2-1), Jimenez (1-0) vs. Pineda (2-1), Miley (1-1) vs. Montgomery (1-1)
Series Price: Yankees -160, Orioles +135

The Yankees come off a five game road trip, winning three of them -- the last two at Fenway Park. They're one of the hottest teams in baseball having won 12 of their last 15, including going 8-1 on their only home stand. Baltimore comes in as the third most profitable team (+7.4 units) and have won six of its last eight road games. They are the AL East leader. This is what Baltimore does every year under Buck Showalter. They also like facing C.C. Sabathia, going 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

New York Mets (8-13) at Washington (16-6)
Scheduled rotation: DeGrom (0-1) vs. Scherzer (3-1), Wheeler (1-2) vs. Strasburg (2-0), Syndergaard (1-1) vs. Ross (1-0)
Series Price: Nationals -200, Mets +170

The Mets are on a 1-10 run have their highest rated daily player, Yoenis Cespedes, doubtful with a strained hamstring. They look every bit like a last-place team. They've belted 30 homers, but bat an NL-low .209. They've been hard to watch nightly. The first-place Nationals are the complete opposite. They're fun to watch leading baseball with 6.3 runs a game, a .284 batting average and .842 OPS. Washington comes off a sweep at Coors Field and have won 10 of its last 11, which includes a sweep last weekend against the Mets at Citi Field. Another sweep here?

Chicago Cubs (12-9) at Boston (11-10)
Scheduled rotation: Arrieta (3-0) vs Pomeranz (1-1), Lackey (1-3) vs. Wright (1-2), Hendricks (2-1) vs. Rodriguez (1-1)
Series Price: Cubs -120, Red Sox +100

Theo Epstein built teams that ended Boston's 86 year drought and he also ended Chicago's 108 year wait. He's a baseball hero on a level never seen before. He's a Hall-of-Famer now and a Cubs-Red Sox world series is certainly a possibility. They're both favorites to win the pennant -- Cubs are 2-to-1 while the Red Sox are 3-to-1 co-favorites with two others. The two teams last met for three in 2014 at Fenway Park with the Cubs sweeping.

The Sox haven't found their groove yet this season losing four of their last five. The Cubs have won six of their last eight and taken over the NL Central lead. Boston has gone 7-0-1 to the Under in its last eight games. The best news for Cubs is they have to face Chris Sale, who pitched Thursday in a 3-0 loss to the Yankees. The Cubs look collectively better than the Red Sox right now; the series price looks cheap.

Cincinnati (10-12) at St. Louis (11-11)
Scheduled rotation: Adelman (0-0) vs. Lynn (2-1), Arroyo (2-2) vs. Leake (3-1), Garrett (2-2) vs. Wacha (2-1)
Series Price: Cardinals -215, Reds +175

Cincinnati took two of three at St. Louis three weeks ago, but both these teams are playing drastically different right now. Everything I hated about the Reds that I was wrong about in the first three weeks is starting to come true again as they've lost seven of their last eight. The Cardinals have won eight of their last 10 and believe that's the real version of the squad, showed what they hope is their real team, not the team that started 3-9.

With Cincinnati's pitching staff coming back to earth allowing 48 runs in its last five, the total Over in this series might offer value. St. Louis has gone Over in in last four games and Cincinnati is on a six game Over streak.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Carlos Gomez hit for the cycle for the second time and Yu Darvish pitched six effective innings, helping the Texas Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 on Saturday night.

Darvish (3-2) allowed one earned run, struck out 10 and walked four, finishing with 125 pitches. He fell five pitches short of his major league high, thrown as a rookie in 2013.

Rougned Odor hit a tiebreaking two-run homer for Texas with two out in the fifth.

Gomez needed only four at-bats for his first cycle since May 7, 2008, with the Minnesota Twins. He doubled in the first inning, singled in the third and tripled in the fifth off starter Jesse Chavez (2-4). He hit a first-pitch fastball from Jose Valdez onto the hill behind center field in the seventh for a two-run homer.

Play was halted briefly in the second inning when a bad-hop single by Shin-Soo Choo struck Angels second baseman Danny Espinosa in the forehead. Espinosa stayed in the game.

            BRAVES 11, BREWERS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Matt Kemp homered three times and drove in five runs, powering the Braves to their fourth straight victory.

Atlanta collected a season-high 20 hits. Dansby Swanson also homered, and Jaime Garcia (1-1) pitched six innings for his first win with the Braves.

Kemp connected in the fifth, seventh and eighth for his first game with three homers. He became the first Braves player to accomplish the feat since Mark Teixeira in 2008.

Milwaukee right-hander Jimmy Nelson (1-2) allowed five runs and 11 hits in five innings.

            DODGERS 6, PHILLIES 5

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Yasiel Puig, Cody Bellinger and Justin Turner hit consecutive homers off Hector Neris in the ninth, helping the Dodgers rally for the win.

Los Angeles trailed 5-2 before the three straight homers. It was the first time the team had accomplished the feat since Aug. 18, 2012.

Austin Barnes then singled off Neris (0-1) with one out. Joely Rodriguez came in and got Andrew Toles to fly out, but Corey Seager singled and Adrian Gonzalez drilled a ball off third baseman Maikel Franco's glove for the winning hit.

Grant Dayton (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Bellinger, one of the majors' top prospects, also hit his first career homer in the seventh. Phillies rookie Andrew Knapp also got his first career homer, going deep against Chris Hatcher in the eighth.

            YANKEES 12, ORIOLES 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Brett Gardner homered twice from the leadoff spot, helping the Yankees earn their fourth straight victory.

Gardner collected his first four RBIs of the season. Austin Romine, the No. 9 batter, also went deep and knocked in five runs.

New York won for the 14th time in 17 games, boosting the American League's best record to 15-7. Right-hander Michael Pineda (3-1) did not allow an earned run in 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight.

Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez (1-1) got chased with one out in the fourth for the second consecutive start. The veteran right-hander was tagged for a season-high seven runs.

            CUBS 7, RED SOX 4

BOSTON (AP) - Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer, helping Chicago rebound from a series-opening loss at Boston.

Miguel Montero and Ben Zobrist each connected for a solo shot for the Cubs, who had dropped two in a row. Kris Bryant had two hits and scored twice.

Cubs right-hander John Lackey (2-3) gave up four runs in six innings, snapping his string of losses in three straight starts. He was part of Boston's 2013 World Series title team.

Hanley Ramirez and Andrew Benintendi connected for the Red Sox, who have the majors' fewest homers. Steven Wright (1-3) gave up five runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Wade Davis pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

            PIRATES 4, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Ivan Nova pitched a three-hitter in Pittsburgh's third straight win.

John Jaso homered and drove in two runs for the Pirates, and Jordy Mercer also knocked in a run.

Nova (3-2) struck out seven and did not walk a batter in the 95-pitch masterpiece. He retired 11 in a row at one point.

Miami has lost four in a row.

Marlins right-hander Dan Straily was charged with three runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

            METS 5, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Michael Conforto hit two home runs and slumping Jose Reyes also connected, leading the Mets to the victory.

The banged-up Mets had lost six in a row when they began this series at Nationals Park against the team with the best record in the majors. Behind their power and bullpen, the Mets beat Washington for the second straight day.

Hansel Robles (4-0) came in to start the sixth and retired five of the six batters he faced, striking out four. Jerry Blevins then took over and fanned Bryce Harper.

Jeurys Familia, pulled Friday night in the ninth while Washington tried to rally, retired three straight hitters to earn his first save of the season.

Washington's Stephen Strasburg (2-1) gave up three runs in seven innings. Harper was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.

            WHITE SOX 6, TIGERS 4, 10 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) - Melky Cabrera led off the 10th inning with a homer against Justin Wilson and Avisail Garcia added an RBI triple, lifting the White Sox to their sixth straight win.

Jose Abreu homered twice in his return to the lineup for Chicago.

Detroit has lost four in a row.

The White Sox held onto a two-run lead in the 10th with David Robertson (1-0) making the most of a chance to pitch a second inning after losing a two-run advantage in the ninth.

Wilson (1-1) hadn't allowed a hit or a run in his first 11 appearances this season until Cabrera hit his first homer of the season.

            INDIANS 4, MARINERS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Danny Salazar got off to a rocky start, and then combined with two Cleveland relievers to hold Seattle hitless over the final eight innings.

Salazar (2-2) gave up a double to Robinson Cano in the first, followed by homers on successive pitches to Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager.

Salazar struck out six in 6 1/3 innings. Andrew Miller struck out four in 1 2/3 innings and Cody Allen pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save.

Jose Ramirez and Lonnie Chisenhall each had two RBIs in Cleveland's four-run first off Yovani Gallardo (1-3).

Cleveland has won eight of 11. Seattle's three-game winning streak ended.

            ROCKIES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 6

PHOENIX (AP) - Mark Reynolds hit a tying two-run single with two out in the ninth and Carlos Gonzalez scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Fernando Rodney, sending the Rockies to a wild comeback win.

Colorado trailed by five after five, but made the most of another rough performance by Rodney (1-2). The veteran reliever walked two and threw two wild pitches in blowing his second consecutive save chance.

Carlos Estevez (3-0) got the win with one scoreless inning and Greg Holland earned his 11th save for the Rockies, who have won the first two games of the three-game set between the top teams in the NL West.

Brandon Drury, Jeff Mathis and Jake Lamb homered to help Arizona build a 6-1 lead. Zack Greinke struck out nine in six-plus innings.

Reynolds, Trevor Story and Alexi Amarista went deep for the Rockies.

            PADRES 12, GIANTS 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Wil Myers capped San Diego's eight-run sixth inning with a three-run homer.

Myers also singled off Chris Stratton (0-1) to start the big inning and had three hits for the game. San Diego scored 11 runs against the Giants' bullpen following five effective innings from San Francisco starter Matt Cain.

Allen Cordoba added a three-run homer off Neil Ramirez in the seventh.

San Diego right-hander Jhoulys Chacin (3-3) struck out six in five innings. He gave up three runs and five hits.

            ATHLETICS 2, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Khris Davis clubbed his 10th home run to back a solid start by Andrew Triggs, and Oakland snapped a five-game skid.

The Athletics ended a 10-game losing streak against the Astros, which was the longest in franchise history against Houston.

Jed Lowrie put Oakland up 1-0 in the fourth with a homer to right field off Joe Musgrove (1-2), and Davis gave the Athletics an insurance run when he connected against Will Harris with two outs in the eighth.

Triggs (4-1) gave up five hits while setting career highs with seven innings and nine strikeouts. Jose Altuve homered against Sean Doolittle with two outs in the eighth, but Santiago Casilla pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

            BLUE JAYS 4, RAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Justin Smoak had three hits, including a two-run homer, and the Blue Jays snapped a three-game losing streak.

Smoak went 3 for 3 and scored twice.

Toronto's Francisco Liriano (2-2) allowed one run and four hits in five-plus innings. Roberto Osuna got three outs finished for his second save.

Tampa Bay right-hander Matt Andriese (1-1) gave up four runs in seven innings.

Rays outfielder Steven Souza left in the seventh after being hit on the back of the left hand by a pitch. X-rays were negative and Souza is day to day.

              — Dodgers 6, Phillies 5– LA hit three consecutive HR’s in bottom of 9th inning to tie game, then scored on a Philly error to win it.

              Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……

              13) Ominous note for the Atlanta Falcons: Last team to lose the Super Bowl and get back to the Super Bowl the next year? Buffalo Bills, in 1993.

              12) There is only one Game 7 in the first round of the NBA playoffs; there were none in the first round of the NHL playoffs, which seems unusual.

              11) What time do garbagemen begin their work day? They switched my garbage collection day from Monday to Tuesday; truck came thru my neighborhood at 5:55am last week- thats a lot of noise for 5:55am.

              10) It is snowing in Colorado this weekend; if the Rockies had been scheduled at home this weekend, they wouldn’t be playing.

              9) Washington Redskins had the most passing yards to tight ends LY, which explains why the Rams drafted TE Gerald Everett from South Alabama— Sean McVay obviously isn’t too impressed with the Rams’ TE’s from last year.

Rams drafted two guys from Eastern Washington, which went 12-2 LY and lost in national semifinals at the I-AA level.

              8) Raiders drafted T David Sharpe from Florida in the 4th round. Florida’s QB LY was Luke Del Rio, son of Raiders’ coach Jack Del Rio.

              7) Those 100 or so people ESPN fired this week; what do they do now? You figure some of them will hook up with other TV networks, but probably not that many— how many openings can there be? There have to be a lot of people wondering what direction their life will take next.

              6) Minnesota Vikings had only two games started by rookies LY, fewest in the NFL.

              5) 49ers drafted QB CJ Beathard from Iowa, grandson of former Redskins’ GM Bobby Beathard. From ESPN.com:

“Beathard lacks an elite physical skill, but he is an unselfish leader and tireless worker — all of which may allow him to overcome his physical deficiencies. He possesses a strong combination of competitiveness, toughness and football IQ to potentially develop into a serviceable backup.” Kevin Weidl

              4) From everything said on TV, Philadelphia did a great job hosting the NFL Draft; they had a ton of people there Thursday/Friday night.

              3) Nike, adidas, UnderArmour all passed on endorsement deals with UCLA PG Lonzo Ball; this becomes more interesting if the kid is the #1 pick in the NBA Draft. Been a while since a father’s big mouth cost his son this much money.

              2) Denver drafted Jim Kelly’s nephew (Ole Miss QB Chad) with the last pick in the draft. I’ll make a prediction that Mr Kelly winds up (maybe in 2018) as the Broncos’ starting QB.

1— If every American did his/her job as well as Mel Kiper Jr does his job, this would be a better country. The man is totally prepared.

                  • LEADING OFF: Cubs, Red Sox show off trophies at Fenway Park
                    April 29, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

                    CROWNS IN TOWN

The curse-breaking World Series trophies that the Red Sox won in 2004 and the Cubs earned last year will both be on display at Fenway Park when Boston hosts Chicago in the nationally televised night matchup. Fans can pose for pictures with both pieces of hardware, with a suggested donation of $20 that will go to each team's charities. Kyle Hendricks starts for Cubs against Eduardo Rodriguez.

                    BOOMIN'

Boosted by Aaron Judge, the Yankees have hit nine home runs in taking two straight from Baltimore. The 6-foot-7 Judge has connected three times vs. the visiting O's, helping New York post the best record in the majors and get in position for a sweep.

''It's fun when everybody's hittin' the ball out of the yard,'' said Austin Romine, who homered and drove in five runs Saturday in a 12-4 romp.

                    FAN ZONE

Nationals star Bryce Harper and Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber have both struck out six times in the last two days.

Harper followed his first three-strikeout game of the season Friday by going 0 for 4 and fanning three more times Saturday vs. the Mets. Coming into the series, he had struck out just 14 times in 22 games. Schwarber is hitting just .211 after two tough games in Boston.

                    RAINY DAYS

The Royals have lost eight in a row, dropping them to 7-15. The skid was put on pause Saturday night when they were rained out at home against Minnesota. Jason Hammel (0-2) will try to end the streak when he faces Twins righty Phil Hughes (3-1).

                    ROTATING

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo says he'll know which direction the Diamondbacks will go with their rotation after losing Shelby Miller for the season. Miller said Saturday that he'll have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The 26-year-old Miller was 2-2 with a 4.09 ERA after going 3-12 last year in his first season with Arizona.

Zack Godley currently has Miller's spot, but Lovullo says the team is still deciding. ''It's time for somebody to step up, embrace that new challenge, and run with it. The candidates that we're talking about, we feel very comfortable with,'' he said.

WASHINGTON (AP) Anthony Rendon had 10 RBIs, three home runs and six hits as the Washington Nationals took advantage of Noah Syndergaard's injury and mauled the New York Mets 23-5 on Sunday to set a franchise scoring record.

Rendon went a career-best 6 for 6 and scored five times while breaking the club mark for RBIs. He became the 13th player in major league history to drive in 10 or more runs in a game - the first since Garret Anderson did it for the Angels in 2007.

Matt Wieters added two homers, a single and two walks as the Nationals salvaged the finale of a three-game series between NL East rivals. Adam Lind and Bryce Harper also homered, and Harper scored four times to set a major league record for runs in April with 32.

Washington finished with a season-high 23 hits and scored the most runs in the history of the Expos/Nationals franchise. The Nationals' seven homers were their most since the team moved from Montreal to Washington in 2005.

Rendon, who began the day with no homers and five RBIs this season, raised his batting average from .226 to .278. He capped his incredible performance with a solo home run off Mets backup catcher Kevin Plawecki in the eighth. Harper and Lind went deep against Plawecki earlier in the inning.

It was a miserable day all-around for the Mets, who won the first two games of the series after losing six straight. They gave up 17 consecutive runs after trailing 6-5 in the fourth.

Syndergaard (1-2), the team's hard-throwing ace, left in the second inning with what the club called ''a possible right lat strain'' and was on his way back to New York for an MRI on Monday morning.

Matt Albers (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

                                PADRES 5, GIANTS 2, 12 INNINGS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Wil Myers hit a three-run homer in the top of the 12th inning to send San Diego past San Francisco.

Myers' seventh home run and second in two games came off reliever George Kontos (0-2). Cory Spangenberg singled against Kontos leading off the inning, and Erick Aybar singled two batters later.

Hector Sanchez, who played parts of five seasons with the Giants, had a pinch-hit, two-run homer off San Francisco closer Mark Melancon in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Sanchez's first home run of the season handed Melancon his second blown save in seven chances.

Sanchez represented the tying run after shortstop Eduardo Nunez booted Luis Sardinas' leadoff grounder for an error.

Ryan Buchter (2-1) pitched two shutout innings and Jose Torres earned his first save.

                                INDIANS 12, MARINERS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Michael Brantley homered and Francisco Lindor had a two-run double as Cleveland scored eight times in the third inning against weary Seattle.

Brantley led off the big inning with a single and capped it with a two-run homer. Lindor, who had three RBIs, hit a solo homer in the third and preceded Brantley's homer with his double.

Josh Tomlin (2-3) allowed four runs in five-plus innings for the win. The Mariners began the sixth with six straight hits and scored three times, but Nick Goody worked out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam.

Chase De Jong (0-2), making his first major league start, gave up six runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings. Nelson Cruz homered for the Mariners, who finished 4-6 on their 11-day road trip.

Roberto Perez had three hits and drove in three runs for the defending AL champions, who have won nine of 12.

                                MARLINS 10, PIRATES 3

MIAMI (AP) - Justin Bour drove in six runs with four hits, both career highs, and Miami rallied from a three-run deficit to end a four-game losing streak by beating Pittsburgh.

Bour improved his batting average from .184 to .222. He had an RBI double in the second, an RBI single in the fourth, a two-run single off Trevor Williams (1-1) in the fifth and a two-run homer in Miami's six-run seventh.

Bour helped the Marlins avert a series sweep and shake an offensive slump after being outscored 26-8 during the previous four games. They totaled a season-high 15 hits, including three each by Dee Gordon and Marcell Ozuna.

Josh Bell hit a two-run homer for the Pirates, but they were shut out over the final 8 2/3 innings.

Pittsburgh starter Chad Kuhl left in the fifth after he was hit in the right leg by Gordon's sharp comebacker.

Dustin McGowan (1-0) and four other Marlins relievers combined for five scoreless innings.

                                ANGELS 5, RANGERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - JC Ramirez got his first win as a starter on his fourth try after 111 career relief appearances, and Jefry Marte homered and hit a tiebreaking, two-run single to help Los Angeles beat Texas.

Ramirez (3-2) matched his career high from two starts earlier with nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander has been filling in for injured Garrett Richards, who hasn't pitched since leaving his first start with a right biceps strain.

Marte's two-out single in the fifth came after the Rangers gave Mike Trout an intentional walk to load the bases and starter Martin Perez (1-4) retired Albert Pujols on a popup.

Marte had a solo homer in the ninth. Kole Calhoun also connected for the Angels.

Bud Norris struck out four of the five batters he faced for his fifth save, including Rougned Odor with two on to end the eighth.

                                Shin-Soo Choo homered for Texas.

                                ORIOLES 7, YANKEES 4, 11 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Mark Trumbo hit a go-ahead single in a three-run 11th off Bryan Mitchell, who returned to the mound after an unusual inning at first base, and Baltimore rebounded from another blown late lead.

Didi Gregorius hit a two-out, two-run single in the New York ninth that made it 4-all. Logan Verrett (1-0), making his Orioles debut, escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the 10th.

Joey Ricard singled with one out in the 11th against Mitchell (1-1), stole second and later scored on Trumbo's two-out single. New York had won four in a row.

With the Yankees short in the bullpen, manager Joe Girardi moved Mitchell from the mound to first base in order to keep him in the game. Mitchell let one pop fall for an error and also caught one.

                                BLUE JAYS 3, RAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Russell Martin hit a go-ahead single during a three-run rally in the eighth inning and Toronto posted back-to-back wins for the first time this year.

The Blue Jays started the day at 7-17, the worst record in the majors. A loss would've left them with the poorest winning percentage in March/April in team history.

Toronto then lost starter Aaron Sanchez, the AL ERA leader last year, after just one inning because of a split fingernail. Six Toronto relievers combined to limit the Rays to one run in eight innings. J.P. Howell (1-1) got one out and Roberto Osuna finished for his third save.

The Blue Jays chased Chris Archer in the eighth and won it against Alex Colome (0-2).

                                REDS 5, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Joey Votto hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and Adam Duvall doubled three times and singled for Cincinnati.

The Reds had lost eight of their previous nine games.

Wandy Peralta (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh. Closer Raisel Iglesias threw two innings to record his fourth save in as many chances.

Trevor Rosenthal (0-1) gave up one run on two hits.

                                BREWERS 4, BRAVES 3
