  • LEADING OFF: Twins-Tigers scrap; Scherzer on Sunday night
    April 22, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

    BAD BLOOD

The Tigers and Twins close out a three-game series a day after benches cleared and punches were thrown. Detroit's JaCoby Jones was hit in the face by a pitch, and two innings later, Minnesota slugger Miguel Sano punched Tigers catcher James McCann in the mask as both dugouts emptied after Matthew Boyd threw a pitch behind Sano. Jones was taken to a hospital after he was drilled in the left side of his mouth by a 90 mph fastball from Twins reliever Justin Haley. Jones' mouth was bleeding, and he was escorted back to the bench and removed from the game.

    MISMATCH?

Max Scherzer (2-1, 1.37 ERA) starts in prime time against a team he's recently dominated: the Mets. Beginning with his no-hitter at Citi Field in his final 2015 outing, Scherzer has an 0.61 ERA in his last four starts vs. New York, striking out 46 and giving up just eight hits in 29 2/3 innings. Zack Wheeler (1-1, 5.52) is 2-6 with a 5.09 ERA in eight career starts vs. Washington.

    VERY BLUE JAYS

Tough times have come to Toronto. Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with a strained right hamstring, joining third baseman Josh Donaldson (calf), left-hander J.A. Happ (elbow) and right-hander Aaron Sanchez (finger) on the shelf. Toronto has the majors' worst record, and with four pivotal players missing and slugger Jose Bautista struggling, the Jays are already at risk of missing the postseason for the first time since 2014. They play the third of four games at the Los Angeles Angels.

    YU STAYING INSIDE

Rangers ace Yu Darvish (1-2, 3.28) starts the series finale against Kansas City, five days after one bad inning. Texas had just taken a 2-0 lead at Oakland before Darvish allowed four of the first five batters in the sixth to reach - all scored as the A's won 4-2. Oakland tied the game on No. 9 hitter Adam Rosales' two-run homer. ''I was pitching great, the plan was working,'' Darvish said through an interpreter. ''It's just that some of the right-handed hitters, especially Rosales, that maybe I should have pitched more in.'' Expect him to do that against the Royals.

    LOOK AT ME NOW

Ivan Nova (1-2, 2.25) faces his former team when the Pirates host the Yankees. New York traded Nova to Pittsburgh last summer for a pair of minor leaguers, and the right-hander has been outstanding since. In 14 starts following the deal, Nova has walked three batters and pitched four complete games, and he's 6-4 with a 2.87 ERA in that time. Lefty Jordan Montgomery (1-0, 4.22) makes his third career start for the Yankees.

    EARLY ROLL

The A's seek their sixth straight win behind emerging starter Andrew Triggs (3-0, 0.00), who has begun this season without an earned run allowed in a team-record 17 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old has shut down the Angels, Royals and Rangers so far and tries to add the struggling Mariners to that list in a start against Yovani Gallardo (0-2, 6.19).

      • Armadillo:Sunday's six-pack

        — Max Scherzer pitches against the Mets tonight; he is 12-0 in his last 13 starts against NL East teams- Nationals won the 13th game, too.

        — Blues 4, Wild 3 OT— St Louis advances, faces Nashville in next round.

        — George Springer left the Astros’ game last night with a tight hamstring, much like Troy Tulowitzki did in Toronto’s game Friday. Hamstring usually equals a trip to the DL. Miguel Cabrera is also on the DL in Detroit.

        — Hawks 116, Wizards 98— Atlanta was winning this game, 35-13.

        — Grizzlies 110, Spurs 108 OT— Series is 2-2; home side won all four games.

        — Warriors 119, Trailblazers 113- Steve Kerr was ill, Mike Brown coached the Warriors, who trailed by 17 at one point.

        **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

        13) When Giants open their 2017 season in Dallas against the Cowboys, it’ll be the 4th time in last five years these rivals opened the season against each other.

        12) Chicago White Sox were shut out in Jose Quintana’s last two starts; in 18 of his last 26 losses, the Pale Hose either got shut out or scored one run.

        11) Blake Griffin is out for the season with an injury to his big toe; those can be tough, since you push off with that part of your foot. Jack Lambert was a damn tough linebacker for the Steelers; his career ended because of an injury to his big toe.

        10) Chicago Blackhawks were first #1 conference seed swept in an NHL first-round series since 1993, when the St Louis Blues swept Chicago.

        9) Something to remember in September: Over the last 20 years, New Jersey Jets are 15-5 against the spread in their first road game of the season. Jets open this year in Buffalo.

        8) Was nice of the Mets’ TV guys to crush the Washington Nationals’ 3B coach when Daniel Murphy got thrown out at the plate Saturday on a throw from right field.

If that happens to the Mets, those guys wouldn’t say boo; maybe they’ll call it questionable to send the guy but no way do they bash the 3B coach.

        7) Toronto Blue Jays have already used seven starting pitchers in the first three weeks of the season; they used seven starting pitchers all of last season.

        6) Buffalo Bills play Miami twice a year, since they’re division rivals, but their two meetings this year are in Weeks 15-17, very late in the season. Unusual.

        5) Kevin Chappell has a one-shot lead after 54 holes of the Valero Open; he is the sixth golfer this year to lead by one stroke after 54 holes- none of the other five won that tournament.

Chappell has never won on Tour, but he has finished 2nd six times, which also adds up to a lot of cash.

        4) Thru Thursday’s major league games, 70 calls had been overturned already this season by instant replay— 44% of plays reviewed were overturned. Replay is a useful tool.

        3) Former Tennessee Vols RB Jalen Hurd is transferring to Baylor, where he can play in 2018 and is expected to be a wide receiver then.

        2) Cleveland Browns/Jacksonville Jaguars are only two NFL teams who won’t be on this season in prime-time- they both get a Sunday morning game from England.

        1) I neither know nor care who the NBA’s MVP will be; it is the most overrated topic in sports today. That said, I know damn well WHO THE BEST PLAYER in the NBA is.

He wears number 23 for the Cavaliers. Used to play for Miami. Great, great player. The best player right now.

                • Tony Gwynn Jr. follows dad in brewing as well as baseball
                  April 23, 2017

SAN DIEGO (AP) Wearing safety goggles and glancing at his watch, Tony Gwynn Jr. waits for the right moment to add hops to a kettle of boiling water and malted barley as he tweaks his craft beer recipe on a two-keg system dwarfed by giant tanks at AleSmith Brewing Co.

Gwynn followed in the footsteps of his famous father in playing at San Diego State and even with the Padres, and now he hopes to hit on something similar to San Diego Pale Ale .394, AleSmith's tribute to the late Hall of Famer.

''That would make me feel fantastic,'' Gwynn said. ''I would like to do something that is equal to my dad. I mean, I couldn't play baseball as equal to him. ... If I could make a beer that people enjoy half as well as they enjoy my dad's, I would be thrilled.''

San Diego is the self-proclaimed Craft Beer Capital of the World and Tony Gwynn was one of the city's most beloved figures, so it's only natural that the two would be linked somehow.

AleSmith's association with the Gwynn family began in the spring of 2014, ostensibly because Gwynn wanted to get back at Tom Seaver. Seaver, as the story goes, brings wine from his vineyard to the Hall of Fame banquet but won't share it with hitters who did well against him. Since Gwynn hit well against pretty much everybody, he didn't get any wine once he became a Hall of Famer.

''Tony said: `You know what? I'm going to brew a beer and you're not going to get any,''' said Peter Zien, AleSmith's CEO and owner.

Gwynn died of cancer on June 16, 2014.

Ten days earlier, .394 Pale Ale- named after Gwynn's highest batting average, in the strike-shortened 1994 season - hit the market. It's been a home run in San Diego and even made it to Cooperstown when Tony's widow, Alicia, brought several cases last year.

It's only natural that the younger Gwynn gives brewing a try. Under Zien's tutelage, he's learning the craft behind craft beer. The .394 Pale Ale is about 6 percent alcohol and Gwynn is looking to brew a session IPA with somewhere around 5 percent alcohol.

''I'm a big IPA fan and I also love .394,'' Gwynn said. ''I wanted to do a combo, a session IPA, the best of both worlds.''

A session IPA, Zien and Gwynn explain, is a beer that someone can have several of during a drinking session due to the lower alcohol content.

On this day, Gwynn is working on a second batch of his beer.

''Without revealing too much, I am trying to get some of the end taste to be better,'' he said.''The initial taste was exactly where I would ever want a beer to be at. The aftertaste, I want to improve that.''

Said Zien: ''That is so important, the aftertaste, because that's what gets you to want to pick your glass up again. And if it's not good, you may just want to get another beer.''

As Gwynn is finding out, there's a lot that goes into brewing craft beer.

''It's a blend of art and science like nothing else,'' said Zien, whose beers are distributed in 24 states and six countries.

Tony Gwynn wrote a book called ''The Art of Hitting,'' and his good friend and native San Diegan Ted Williams wrote a book called ''The Science of Hitting.''

''It does remind me a little bit of working on your swing,'' said the younger Gwynn, who played for the Brewers, Padres, Dodgers and Phillies in a career that spanned parts of eight seasons. ''There's so many little nuances that if you don't pay attention to, you can never be a good hitter. You can never even attempt to hit. There's some similarities.''

Most big leaguers aren't beer snobs, probably because the adult beverage available in clubhouses after games is usually mass-produced light beer.

Gwynn, now part of the Padres' broadcast team, definitely considers himself a beer snob.

''I wasn't around when my dad was making his beer,'' he said. ''The only thing I had seen him drink was Coors Light. So when they initially were telling me he created a beer, in my mind I was like, `This can't be that good because all I've ever seen him drink was Coors Light.''

When the Gwynns approached Zien about brewing a beer in the spring of 2014, ''Tony asked for a beer that was `light with a kick,'' the brewer said. ''We interpreted it to mean, keep that color light for you but give you a kick with alcohol and hops and make it interesting.''

Zien said he brought four different types of beer to the Hall of Famer's suburban home to taste: an extra pale ale, an IPA, a nut brown and an 11 percent Belgian ale.

''I almost saw in his eyes, when he tasted the IPA and the extra, he was almost like, `Wow, these aren't like the beers I drink,''' Zien said. ''But he bought in immediately. He was like, `Wow, these have flavor.' It was almost like he was saying to me: `I wish I had known. I wouldn't have wasted my money on Coors Light.'''

Said Gwynn Jr.: ''He just didn't have a clue these beers were out there. He didn't venture around too much.''

Gwynn would like to have his beer on the market by June.

''It all depends on if I'm feeling the taste, if I think it's where it needs to be,'' he said.

Then he'll have to pick a name.

While there are similarities between the Gwynns - ''That grin and that laugh are near identical to his father,'' Zien said - batting average isn't one of them.

Gwynn figures he might poke fun at himself in naming his beer, and maybe work in his highest average, which was .270 with the Padres in 2009.

''It certainly isn't .394, but there aren't a lot of people who can say they hit .394,'' Gwynn said.

                    • MLB roundup: Motter, Cruz combine for 9 RBIs in Mariners' win
                      April 23, 2017

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Taylor Motter belted a grand slam, and Nelson Cruz drove in five runs, three with a home run, as the Seattle Mariners snapped out of a slump on the road Sunday to crush the Oakland Athletics 11-1 and salvage one win in the four-game series.

Yovani Gallardo allowed just one run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings to record his first career victory over the A's, who had entered the game on a season-best, five-game winning streak.

Mitch Haniger had three hits, including a double, and Robinson Cano chipped in with a pair of singles in an 11-hit Mariners attack that produced more runs than Seattle had totaled (10) in its three series-opening losses in Oakland.

                      Nationals 6, Mets 3

YORK -- Daniel Murphy continued to torment his former team when he hit a first-inning grand slam to launch Washington to a sweep of the three-game series against New York at Citi Field.

The Nationals have won seven straight. The Mets have lost eight of nine to fall 5 1/2 games behind Washington just three weeks into the season. Murphy, who spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Mets before signing with the Nationals in January 2016, is batting .386 with eight homers and 25 RBIs in 22 games against New York.

Max Scherzer (3-1) allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out nine over eight innings. Scherzer allowed a leadoff homer to Michael Conforto on his second pitch of the game and a two-run homer to Neil Walker in the third.

                      Marlins 7, Padres 3

SAN DIEGO -- Justin Bour capped a six-run Miami sixth inning with a three-run homer in a victory over San Diego in the rubber match of a three-game series.

The first six Marlins hitters in the sixth reached base after Padres starter Luis Perdomo had allowed only two hits through the first five innings as the Padres built a 3-0 lead.

Tom Koehler (1-1) picked up the win, walking two and striking out seven.

                      Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 2

PHOENIX -- Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run homer to cap a six-run fifth inning, and Brandon McCarthy earned his third win of the season in Los Angeles' victory over Arizona at Chase Field.

Corey Seager had an RBI double to help the Dodgers avoid their first three-game sweep in Arizona since April 7-9, 2008.

McCarthy (3-0) gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one. McCarthy spent 2014 and the first half of 2015 with the Diamondbacks.

                      Blue Jays 6, Angels 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Marcus Stroman allowed seven hits and one earned run and retired 17 straight batters at one point to provide the foundation for Toronto's win vs. Los Angeles.

Stroman (2-2) needed just 100 pitches to wrap up the win and his second complete game of the season.

The Angels' Daniel Wright, who made one relief appearance early in the season, worked five solid innings in his first start of 2017. He allowed three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

                      Rockies 8, Giants 0

DENVER -- Kyle Freeland pitched seven scoreless innings as Colorado completed a three-game sweep by pounding slumping San Francisco.

Making his fourth career start, Freeland (2-1) held the Giants to six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He retired the first 11 batters he faced, didn't allow a runner to get past first until the fifth inning and got 12 outs on ground balls.

Gerardo Parra hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs for the Rockies, who put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth. Charlie Blackmon and Trevor Story each drove in two runs.

                      Rangers 5, Royals 2

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Joey Gallo and Robinson Chirinos hit home runs, Yu Darvish struck out eight in eight innings, and Matt Bush got his first save as Texas defeated Kansas City.

The Royals were on the board first. With one out in the third inning, Mike Moustakas hit an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall for a solo home run. Two pitches later, rookie center fielder Jorge Bonifacio connected for his first major league home run, a 421-foot shot to left field.

The Rangers clawed back for one run in the bottom of the third and reclaimed the lead in the fourth.

                      Cardinals 6, Brewers 4

MILWAUKEE -- Mike Leake continued his dominant start to the 2017 season, striking out six in six effective innings, and Seung Hwan Oh slammed the door on a potential ninth-inning rally as St. Louis beat Milwaukee.

Leake (3-1) held the Brewers to two runs on three hits and three walks. He also reached on an error and scored a tying run in the third.

Jimmy Nelson (1-1) battled with his command and walked a season-high six batters while striking out five and allowing five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He gave up four runs (three earned) and struck out five.

                      Tigers 13, Twins 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- John Hicks had three hits, including his first career home run, and five RBIs for Detroit in its win over Minnesota.

Michael Fulmer settled in after a rough first inning to get the win, surrendering one run and three hits in the first inning. He finished seven strong innings, retiring 20 of the final 22 batters he faced. The only hit he allowed after the first inning was an Eddie Rosario solo homer leading off the fifth.

Victor Martinez and Jim Adduci each had three hits and two RBIs for the Tigers.

                      White Sox 6, Indians 2

CHICAGO -- Derek Holland threw six strong innings to help Chicago beat Cleveland to avoid a three-game sweep.

Melky Cabrera drove in two runs, and Tim Anderson and Jose Abreu had two hits apiece as the White Sox ended a 23-inning scoreless streak and a three-game losing streak.

Francisco Lindor homered for the Indians, whose season-high five-game winning streak was snapped.

                      Pirates 2, Yankees 1

PITTSBURGH -- Ivan Nova dominated the Yankees for seven-plus innings in Pittsburgh's win. Nova allowed just four hits and one run to lower his ERA to 2.00 on the season. He struck out seven.

A sacrifice fly by David Freese and a Gregory Polanco RBI double were good enough for the Pirates win.

Jacoby Ellsbury's second home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1 in the seventh inning, was all the offense the Yankees managed.

                      Red Sox 6, Orioles 2

BALTIMORE -- Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez set the tone with back-to-back homers in the first inning, and Boston avoided a three-game sweep with a victory over Baltimore.

Mitch Moreland also went deep for the Red Sox, who entered the game with just two home runs in their past six games. Andrew Benintendi had a career-high five hits for Boston.

Despite the setback, the Orioles still have not lost a series this year.

                      Astros 6, Rays 4 (10 innings)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Trailing in the ninth inning, Houston rallied to force extra innings and got RBI singles from Brian McCann and Yuli Gurriel in the 10th inning to beat Tampa Bay.

The Astros held the Rays to two hits in the final nine innings, with Luke Gregerson (1-1) pitching a scoreless ninth for the win and closer Ken Giles pitching the 10th for his fifth save of the season.

Rays starter Matt Andriese lasted only five innings after being spotted a four-run lead in the first.

                      Reds 7, Cubs 5

CINCINNATI -- Patrick Kivlehan drove in three runs in just his third start, Scott Schebler homered and drove in two runs and Bronson Arroyo earned his second straight win as Cincinnati Reds snapped a four-game losing streak, holding off Chicago.

The Reds finished 3-7 on their homestand after going 5-1 on the preceding road trip.

Anthony Rizzo's two-run homer wasn't enough to prevent Cubs right-hander John Lackey's third consecutive loss. Lackey allowed six hits and seven runs, five earned, with two walks and seven strikeouts.

                      Philadelphia 5, Braves 2

PHILADELPHIA -- Back-to-back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning propelled Philadelphia to a series sweep of Atlanta.

Cesar Hernandez hit a two-run homer off Arodys Vizcaino to give the Phillies the lead with no outs in the eighth before Aaron Altherr and Odubel Herrera followed up with solo shots.

In his second start of the season, Phillies starter Zach Eflin stifled the Braves, scattering just three hits over seven innings while allowing one earned run on a Matt Kemp homer.

                      • MLB notebook: Red Sox's Pedroia misses another game
                        April 23, 2017

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia (knee, ankle) was out of the lineup for the second consecutive game against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.

He is expected to undergo an MRI exam on Monday in Boston.

Pedroia was forced to leave Friday's game in the eighth inning when he was spiked in the left calf by Baltimore's Manny Machado. Pedroia still has swelling in both the knee and ankle.

Also, Red Sox right-hander Matt Barnes was ejected Sunday after hitting Manny Machado with a pitch in the eighth inning. Machado had injured Pedroia with a hard slide Friday.

--Detroit Tigers outfielder JaCoby Jones was placed on the disabled list with a left lip laceration after being hit in the face by a pitch from Minnesota Twins reliever Justin Haley during Saturday's game.

Jones suffered a split lip that needed nine stitches but avoided further damage. He left the game with his mouth bleeding. He was taken to a hospital and underwent a CT scan.

The Tigers selected the contract of outfielder Jim Adduci from Triple-A Toledo before Sunday's finale in Minnesota. Adduci, 31, was signed by the team in the offseason after playing in Korea.

The Tigers are also without first baseman Miguel Cabrera (groin), shortstop Jose Iglesias (concussion) and outfielder J.D. Martinez (foot).

--The Seattle Mariners designated struggling center fielder Leonys Martin for assignment after he was benched by the team.

The left-handed-hitting Martin is batting just .111 with no home runs or RBIs in 54 at-bats in 15 games this season. Jarrod Dyson replaced Martin as the Mariners' starting center fielder, moving over from left field.

Martin, 29, hit .247 last season, starting 142 games in the outfield for the Mariners. He set career bests with 15 home runs and 47 RBIs. Seattle acquired him in a 2015 trade with the Texas Rangers.

The DFA move allowed Seattle to recall first baseman Dan Vogelbach from Triple-A Tacoma. Vogelbach, 24, was hitting .309 with two homers and 14 RBIs for Tacoma.

                        • LEADING OFF: MLB sorts out trouble in Baltimore, Minnesota
                          April 23, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

                          PAY THE PRICE

Major League Baseball figures to be busy, sorting out possible penalties after the ill will at Camden Yards and Target Field over the weekend.

On Sunday, Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes was ejected after throwing a fastball behind the head of Baltimore star Manny Machado. Earlier in the series, Machado spiked Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia on an aggressive slide.

On Saturday in Minnesota, soon after Detroit's JaCoby Jones was hit in the face by a pitch, Tigers starter Matthew Boyd threw behind Miguel Sano and the benches cleared.

                          SPLASH

Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo homered in three straight games over the weekend in Cincinnati. He now takes aim at PNC Park and the Allegheny River beyond the right field wall when Chicago visits Pittsburgh.

                          AILING

The Royals will see how star catcher Salvador Perez is feeling as he deals with a stiff neck. He missed two straight games over the weekend in Texas. Kansas City next visits the White Sox.

                          NICE START

Tampa Bay ace Chris Archer is 2-0 over four starts going into this outing at Baltimore. Last year, he tied James Shields for the major league lead in losses while going 9-19.

                          WELCOME BACK

Milwaukee right-hander Matt Garza is set to come off the disabled list and make his first start of the season when the Reds are at Miller Park. He's been sidelined by a strained right groin.

                              Quote of the Day
“All the guys I hire for the staff are cut from the same cloth. They’re all unselfish and committed to the team but ambitious and hardworking. I think ambition can go two ways. You can be ambitious and be part of the team, or you can be ambitious for your own career. I like people who are ambitious for the team.”
