CHICAGO (AP) Madison Bumgarner outpitched Jake Arrieta with 10 strikeouts over six innings, and the San Francisco Giants pounced on rare miscues by the Chicago Cubs in a 3-2 victory on Saturday.

Bumgarner (14-8) allowed two runs and five hits in his fourth victory in his last five starts. San Francisco, trying to catch Los Angeles in the NL West, rebounded from a pair of one-run losses in the first two games of the four-game set against the major league leaders.

Arrieta (16-6) was charged with three runs - two earned - and four hits in six innings in his first loss since July 30. The Cubs had won five in a row overall.

      RANGERS 12, ASTROS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre and Nomar Mazara each homered, Derek Holland pitched his third straight quality start since coming off the disabled list and Texas got its seventh straight victory.

After trailing 1-0, the Rangers got their major league-high 42nd come-from-behind win. They've won eight of nine and scored at least 10 runs in each of their past three games.

AL West-leading Texas is 13-2 against the Astros this season and 37-19 against the division.

Holland (7-6) pitched six innings, allowing two runs, six hits and three walks.

Evan Gattis had three hits for Houston, including a solo homer.

Joe Musgrove (2-3) allowed five runs and eight hits over 4 1/3 innings.

      METS 3, NATIONALS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Curtis Granderson and James Loney came through with big hits to back Robert Gsellman, and New York got another gritty start from an unheralded rookie in its banged-up rotation.

Gsellman (2-1) pitched out of trouble for six innings, and inexperienced center fielder Michael Conforto made a diving catch that thwarted a potential Nationals rally in the seventh. New York rebounded from consecutive losses and won for the 10th time in 14 games, moving within one game of St. Louis for the final NL playoff berth.

The Cardinals lost 9-1 in Cincinnati.

Washington's Tanner Roark (14-8) allowed two runs and four hits over five innings.

Jeurys Familia got his major league-leading 45th save in 48 tries.

      ORIOLES 2, YANKEES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Kevin Gausman outpitched CC Sabathia for the second time in seven days, Adam Jones homered and Baltimore got its third straight shutout against New York.

Gausman (7-10) allowed two hits and two walks over six innings to win his fourth straight start. He struck out eight and permitted only one runner past second base.

Zach Britton, the third Baltimore reliever, worked a perfect ninth for his 40th save in 40 opportunities.

Sabathia (8-12) gave up two runs, one earned, in six innings. All it got him was another loss against the Orioles, the third in a row since mid-July.

      RAYS 7, BLUE JAYS 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Matt Duffy's three-run double highlighted a five-run sixth inning and last-place Tampa Bay beat AL East-leading Toronto for the second straight game.

The big outburst came against right-hander Marco Estrada (8-7), who had given up just two singles in the first five innings. Duffy's double was the fifth hit of the inning.

Rookie Blake Snell (5-7) got the win after giving up one run and two hits while striking out seven in six innings.

Toronto rallied for four runs in the ninth off Enny Romero before Alex Colome got the final out for his 30th save.

      ROYALS 5, TIGERS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Eric Hosmer hit his career-high 20th homer, Yordano Ventura pitched into and out of trouble and Kansas City snapped a three-game losing streak.

Ventura (10-9) improved to 7-0 against the Tigers, including three wins this season, and is 4-0 overall in his past six starts

Michael Fulmer (10-6) gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings for the Tigers, falling to 1-4 in his past five starts. He walked one and struck out four.

Wade Davis got his 22nd save in 25 opportunities

      INDIANS 8, MARLINS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Trevor Bauer overcame a shaky first inning and pitched into the ninth, Francisco Lindor was 4 for 4 and Cleveland beat Miami.

Bauer (10-6) shut down the Marlins after giving up three runs and three hits in the first. The right-hander didn't allow another hit until Ichiro Suzuki led off the ninth with a single.

Lindor doubled in the first and third, singled in the fourth and added an RBI single in the sixth.

Kipnis hit his 22nd homer in the first off Marlins ace Jose Fernandez (13-8), who gave up a career-high 12 hits and seven runs in 5 2/3 innings.

      REDS 9, CARDINALS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Zack Cozart hit a pair of doubles during run-scoring innings that included St. Louis misplays, and Cincinnati sent the Cardinals to their third straight loss.

The Cardinals have lost seven of 11. They're still in position to get the NL's second wild-card spot, staying ahead of the Mets, Pirates and Marlins.

Pinch hitter Ramon Cabrera's two-run single in the seventh inning put the Reds ahead 4-1. Cincinnati used four walks by Jerome Williams to score five times in the eighth.

Dan Straily (11-7) gave up three hits, including Jedd Gyorko's homer, and a career-high seven walks in only 5 2/3 innings.

Jaime Garcia (10-11) lost after allowing two runs in six innings.

      TWINS 11, WHITE SOX 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Miguel Sano and Trevor Plouffe each homered during an eight-run third inning, and Minnesota went deep four times.

Brian Dozier led off with his 34th homer, and Byron Buxton tacked on a two-run shot in the second against beleaguered starter James Shields (5-17).

Hector Santiago (11-8) won for the first time in six starts since the Twins acquired him in late July from the Los Angeles Angels.

      DODGERS 5, PADRES 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Rich Hill pitched six sparkling innings, Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run homer and Los Angeles beat San Diego.

Hill (11-3) allowed one hit, struck out eight and walked two in his second start since the Dodgers acquired him from Oakland at the Aug. 1 trade deadline. The left-hander was scratched at Colorado last week due to a combination of weather and a finger blister.

Kenley Jansen struck out the side in the ninth for his 41st save in 47 chances.

Luis Perdomo (7-8) allowed five runs and nine hits in six innings.

      BREWERS 7, PIRATES 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Struggling rookie Orlando Arcia had three hits, including a tiebreaking single in Milwaukee's four-run eighth inning, to extend Pittsburgh's losing streak to five games.

Pittsburgh's Neftali Feliz (4-2) was charged with two runs, retiring only one of the three batters before leaving with right arm discomfort.

Carlos Torres (3-3) got the win despite allowing Andrew McCutchen's 19th homer in the seventh inning, tying it at 2.

Tyler Thornburg got three outs for his eighth save.

      RED SOX 11, ATHLETICS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Rick Porcello didn't allow a baserunner until Jake Smolinski's one-out double in the sixth on the way to his majors-leading 19th victory, and Boston routed Oakland yet again.

Porcello (19-3) gave up four hits and two runs in seven innings, struck out two and didn't walk a batter.

Right-hander Daniel Mengden (1-6), called up from Triple-A Nashville, allowed seven runs and eight hits in just 2 2/3 innings.

      BRAVES 6, PHILLIES 4, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Adonis Garcia scored the winning run in the 10th inning after homering twice earlier in the game, and Atlanta beat Philadelphia.

Jed Bradley (1-0) got the win in his major league debut. He threw one scoreless inning and had a strikeout.

Mauricio Cabrera got his fourth save in four opportunities.

Edubray Ramos (1-2) allowed two runs and one hit after allowing a leadoff walk to Garcia.

      ANGELS 10, MARINERS 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Kole Calhoun and Albert Pujols both homered twice, Mike Trout also went deep and Los Angeles beat Seattle.

Calhoun, Trout and Pujols hit consecutive home runs to lead a six-run first inning against starter Taijuan Walker (4-10).

Tyler Skaggs (3-3) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings for Los Angeles, striking out seven and walking one.

      DIAMONDBACKS 9, ROCKIES 4

      • LEADING OFF: Quiet bats at Wrigley, domination in Dallas
        September 3, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

        PITCHING IN

After aces Madison Bumgarner and Jake Arrieta dueled at Wrigley Field on Saturday, Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto and Cubs righty John Lackey try for another low-scoring game when San Francisco wraps a four-game series at Chicago. The teams have combined for eight runs and 19 hits over the past two games but could get a break against the struggling righties in the finale - Cueto allowed four runs over 4 2/3 innings in a loss against Arizona in his last start, while Lackey is making his first outing since Aug. 14 after dealing with a shoulder injury.

        DALLAS DOMINATION

Houston tries to find a rare victory in Arlington when it concludes a three-game series against the Rangers. Texas won 12-4 on Saturday, improving to 13-2 against the Astros so far this season, including 1-8 at home. Collin McHugh (9-10, 4.80) pitches for Houston against Rangers star Yu Darvish (5-3, 3.01).

        CHASING BOOMER

J.A. Happ (17-4) will try to become only the second left-hander to win 18 games for the Blue Jays after David Wells won 20 in 2000. Happ can also become the majors' second 18-game winner, following Boston's Rick Porcello. Toronto faces Tampa Bay, which has taken two straight from the AL East leaders.

        NO-NAMES AT NIGHT

The Nationals and Mets - both counting big-name rotations this year - play in prime time with lesser-known hurlers on the hill. For Washington, hard-throwing rookie Reynaldo Lopez (2-2, 5.33) gets his sixth start after allowing six runs in 2 2/3 innings against Baltimore last time out. For New York, righty Seth Lugo (2-2, 2.60) gets another turn in New York's banged up rotation after pitching six quality innings in a win over Miami on Tuesday.

        JUST IN TIME

Jose De Leon is expected to make his major league debut starting for the Dodgers against the Padres. De Leon is one of baseball's top pitching prospects and was 7-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 16 starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season. The call to the majors came just in time, too. ''I needed to be here in Los Angeles this year,'' De Leon said , ''because I wanted Vin Scully to call my game.''

          • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

            Thoughts on the Bradford-to-Minnesota trade

            — Eagles get a 1st and 4th-round pick; if Minnesota makes NFC title game, it becomes 3rd-round pick, if they win Super Bowl, a 2nd-rounder.

            — Norv Turner is Bradford’s 6th offensive coordinator in seven years.

            — Vikings TE coach Pat Shurmur was with Bradford in Philly LY and for two years in St Louis as the offensive coordinator.

            — Bradford’s career won-loss record: 25-37-1; he was a college teammate of Adrian Peterson at Oklahoma. Not sure he is worth a 1st-round pick.

            — Rookie QB Carson Wentz will start for the Eagles next week if his ribs have healed. Otherwise Chase Daniel (two starts in six years) will start.

            — If Vikings traded a 1st-round pick, there has to be serious concern about Teddy Bridgewater’s leg ever recovering enough for him to play well again. Hopefully he can come back but apparently it was a terrible injury.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

            13) Not a great weekend for the SEC. Here’s a look…..

            Losses
Mississippi State (led 17-0) lost 21-20 to South Alabama.
Kentucky (led 35-10) lost 44-35 to Southern Miss.
LSU lost 16-14 to Wisconsin; when will they recruit a decent QB?
Missouri lost 26-11 at West Virginia.
Auburn lost 19-13 at home to Clemson (more on this game later).

            Wins that seemed like losses
Tennessee 20, Appalachian State 13 OT– Vols were a 20.5-point favorite.
Arkansas 21, Louisiana Tech 20– Hogs scored winning TD with 6:37 left; total yardage in game was 297-291- they were favored by 21.
Florida 24, UMass 7– Game was 10-7 in 4th quarter.
South Carolina 13, Vandy 10– Conference opener was a dud.

            Solid wins
            Texas A&M 31, UCLA 24 OT– Aggies led 24-9 with 4:30 left, but still……..
Alabama 52, USC 6– Total ass-kicking. Tank job by the Trojans.
Georgia 33, North Carolina 24– Good debut for Kirby Smart’s Dawgs.

Ole Miss plays Florida State Monday night.

            12) Houston 33, Oklahoma 23– Games like this one and the LSU game are why bigtime coaches don’t like to go on the road to play good teams- you can actually lose. If/when Houston joins the Big X Conference or another Power 5 league, coach Tom Herman will get a check for $5M. Seriously.

            11) Minnesota Gophers’ coach Tracy Claeys is my new hero; Thursday nite he did something I’ve always advocated for, but never thought I would see. Here’s what happened…….

Gophers led Oregon State 24-23 late in game; they scored a TD with 1:27 left to make it 30-23, but instead of kicking the PAT, Claeys had his team go for 2, because if he makes, it, THE GAME IS OVER!!!! (they’d be up 9 instead of 8 with 1:27 left). If they don’t make it, they still lead by 7 with 1:27 left, and could only lose in OT.

Former Minnesota/Kansas coach Glen Mason was the TV analyst; you could almost hear his arteries hardening as he criticized going for 2– he restrained himself, but you could tell he thought it was dumb. That’s why he is in a TV booth now.

Long story short; they didn’t get the two points, Oregon State got the ball back down 7, but Minnesota held on for the win. It took onions for Claeys to do something against the grain in his first game as the fulltime coach. Good for him!!!!

            10) Teams that lost to I-AA “patsies” this weekend:
Buffalo lost 22-16 to Albany– My alma mater with the upset.
Virginia lost 37-20 to Richmond– Bad debut for Bronco Mendenhall.
Iowa State lost 25-20 to Northern Iowa– Good luck in Big X games.
Washington State lost 45-42 to Eastern Washington– 2nd year in row Coogs open with a I-AA loss.
Nevada needed OT to beat Cal Poly 30-27, but at least they won.

            9) Odd game of the week: Texas State 56, Ohio U 54 OT– Battle of the Bobcats (both teams’ mascot). Texas State led 14-6 at half, but 17 points were scored in last 0:51 of regulation, then TSU stopped Ohio’s 2-point play in the third OT and got out of town with a win as a 17-point dog.

            8) BYU 18, Arizona 16– Game ended at just about 2am, as I sit here typing this. How great is FOX officiating analyst Mike Pereira? It is 2am, there is an obscure rules question and Pereira appears on camera– why is he still there? He has a knack for explaining things clearly and is TV gold.

Both teams scored in last minute of this game, by the way.

            7) Western Michigan 22, Northwestern 21– 12-2 weekend for Big 14, with Wisconsin’s win the highlight; most of the wins were against stiffs, though. Joe Flacco’s brother is backup QB for Western Michigan.

            6) TCU 59, South Dakota State 41– Adam Vinatieri’s nephew plays for the Jackrabbits; not surprisingly, he is the kicker. TCU’s defense needs work; this game was 24-24 at the half.

            5) Who is happiest about the Sam Bradford trade? Cleveland Browns, who have the Eagles’ #1 pick next April. If Philly plays Carson Wentz this year, chances are they won’t make the playoffs, since rookie QBs usually struggle. Browns should get a decent draft pick next spring.

            4) Southern Miss 44, Kentucky 35– Wildcats led USM 35-10, the same Golden Eagle squad that had lost 13 in a row to SEC foes. Shannon Dawson was Kentucky’s OC LY; they fired him after one year. He has the same job at Southern Miss now; think this game meant a lot to him?

            3) South Alabama 21, Mississippi State 20– USA’s defensive coordinator is the son of Ole Miss’ defensive coordinator; think the family enjoyed this upset of the Rebels’ archrival? State led 17-0 at the half, too.

            2) Clemson 19, Auburn 13– Football coaches who make $1M+ a year shouldn’t screw up game management as much as they do. Down 10 early in 4th quarter, Auburn twice went for it on 4th down in easy FG range, and wound up getting zero on the drive. Gus Malzahn was a high school coach not that long ago; some of his decisions remind us of that.

1– Fact of the Day: 1983 Miami Hurricanes were last college football national champ that lost their season opener.

                    • LEADING OFF: Quiet bats at Wrigley, domination in Dallas
                      September 4, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                      FAREWELL TO TEX

Maryland native and Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will play his final game at Camden Yards. Teixeira was cheered as a visiting player in Baltimore until he signed as a free agent with New York in 2009. From that point, the hometown kid heard only boos. ''When you play a long time, it really doesn't bother you at all,'' Teixeira said. Besides, it's not like he spurned the Orioles in 2009. ''They didn't have any intention of signing me. They made an offer just to say they made an offer,'' he said.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Eduardo Rodriguez's no-hit bid for the Boston Red Sox was broken up after a replay reversal with two outs in the eighth inning, and Khris Davis hit a game-ending double in the ninth that sent the Oakland Athletics to a 1-0 victory Sunday.

Brock Holt misplayed Davis' double in deep left field for an error that allowed Danny Valencia to score from first base. Valencia drew a leadoff walk against Craig Kimbrel (2-4), and Oakland averted a three-game sweep.

Marcus Semien reached on an infield single in the eighth after Rodriguez stuck out his right leg to knock down a grounder. The left-hander found the ball and threw to first, where Semien initially was ruled out by umpire Laz Diaz.

A's manager Bob Melvin challenged the call, which was overturned after a quick review. Replays clearly showed Semien was safe.

Oakland has not been held without a hit since four Orioles pitchers turned the trick on July 13, 1991 - the longest active streak in the majors.

The last-place A's snapped a five-game losing streak overall, and a nine-game skid to Boston.

Ryan Madson (5-4) pitched the ninth for the win.

                                ANGELS 4, MARINERS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Los Angeles starter Matt Shoemaker was hospitalized after taking a line drive to the head.

Shoemaker was hit on the right side of his head with one out in the second inning on a 105 mph line drive from Kyle Seager. Shoemaker was able to turn his head slightly to avoid a direct blow to his face but was unable to get his mitt up in time.

After the game, the Angels announced that a CT scan revealed Shoemaker suffered a small skull fracture and small hematoma. He was to be seen by a neurologist and remain in Seattle overnight for observation.

Albert Pujols and C.J. Cron hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning and six Angels relievers combined to shut down the Mariners. Deolis Guerra (3-0) was the first to enter, and Andrew Bailey worked the ninth for his first save since 2013 with Boston.

Pujols hit his 29th homer off starter Hisashi Iwakuma (14-11).

                                CARDINALS 5, REDS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Randal Grichuk and Kolten Wong homered, Carlos Martinez carried a shutout into the seventh inning and St. Louis Cardinals snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over Cincinnati.

Yadier Molina had two of the Cardinals' five hits as they avoided being swept in Cincinnati for the first time since July 2012.

St. Louis, which turned four double plays, remained one game ahead of the Mets for the final NL playoff spot.

Martinez (13-7) improved to 8-1 in 13 road starts this season. Seung Hwan Oh earned his 15th save.

Tim Adleman (2-3) gave up three runs in five innings.

NEW YORK (AP) - Seth Lugo kept pitching like a playoff-tested ace rather than a rookie, and New York got two-run homers from Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce to beat Washington.

The Mets won for the 11th time in 15 tries but didn't have much time to savor the victory - they hurried to Cincinnati for a 1:10 p.m. Monday holiday start.

Lugo (3-2) limited the NL East leaders to one run in seven innings. The 26-year-old righty has won three straight starts, permitting a total of three runs, to help rejuvenate an injury-plagued rotation.

                                Granderson drove in three runs.

Danny Espinosa matched a career high with his 21st homer for Washington. Reynaldo Lopez (2-3) threw three wild pitches over four innings in his return from Triple-A.

                                BLUE JAYS 5, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Russell Martin hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning to help Toronto overcome a poor start by 17-game winner J.A. Happ and avoid a three-game sweep against Tampa Bay.

The Blue Jays moved a game ahead of Boston atop the AL East.

Martin hit his 17th home run on a 3-0 pitch from Kevin Jepsen (2-6). The catcher has nine homers and 24 RBIs over his last 18 games.

Joaquin Benoit (3-1) struck out three in a scoreless seventh. Roberto Osuna got his 30th save.

Toronto manager John Gibbons was ejected from the dugout by plate umpire Pat Hoberg after Martin struck out in the fourth.

The Blue Jays tied it at 3 in the seventh on Devon Travis' two-run single off Brad Boxberger, costing 17-game loser Chris Archer a shot at his ninth win. Archer struck out nine, running his AL-best total to 211.

                                YANKEES 5, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chase Headley and Austin Romine had two RBIs apiece, and New York beat Baltimore to prevent a three-game sweep and remain afloat in the AL wild-card race.

With five rookies in the starting lineup, the Yankees closed within 3 1/2 games of the Orioles and Tigers for the league's final playoff spot.

Luis Severino (2-8) pitched two strong innings of relief and Dellin Betances, the fifth New York reliever, got four outs for his eighth save.

The loss dropped Baltimore three games out of first place in the AL East.

New York had been shut out three consecutive times by the Orioles in a seven-day span. But the Yankees promptly put an end to the streak with a three-run first against Wade Miley (8-12).

                                CUBS 3, GIANTS 2, 13 INNINGS

CHICAGO (AP) - Jason Heyward hit a tying single in the ninth inning and a game-winning single in the 13th as Chicago took three of four from San Francisco in a possible playoff preview.

Anthony Rizzo singled leading off the 13th against Matt Reynolds (0-1) and went to second on Ben Zobrist's sacrifice. Addison Russell, who had three hits, was walked intentionally before Heyward drove in his third run of the game.

Trevor Cahill (4-4) worked a perfect inning in a series in which all four games were decided by one run.

The Cubs were staring at a second straight loss when Russell led off the ninth with a double against Santiago Casilla. Russell went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Heyward's single to hand Casilla his seventh blown save.

                                INDIANS 6, MARLINS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) - Lonnie Chisenhall capped a three-run rally with a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning against Fernando Rodney, leading Cleveland over Miami.

Chisenhall's hit dropped in front of a sliding Ichiro Suzuki in right field and scored pinch-runner Michael Martinez, giving the AL Central leaders their sixth straight win.

Jose Ramirez's two-run single tied it, also with two outs.

Rodney (2-4) allowed three runs, two hits, three walks and threw two wild pitches.

Indians manager Terry Francona was ejected earlier in the inning for arguing when Jason Kipnis struck out on a checked call.

Cody Allen (3-5) got two outs to help the Indians complete a three-game sweep and maintain a 5 1/2-game lead over Detroit.
