    • Monday's Diamond Notes
      August 15, 2016

Hottest team: Indians (4-0 past four, 6-2 past eight)

The Indians swept the Angels in a four-game set over the weekend, winning by a combined total of 37 runs to 12. Now, they set their sights on the Boston Red Sox Monday afternoon in a makeup of a rainout from back on April 7. Boston uses former Tribe prospect Drew Pomeranz, who continues to search for his first win since being acquired from the San Diego Padres after the All-Star break. Josh Tomlin faces the former first-round pick of the Indians, and he is also looking to slap the brakes on a skid. Tomlin has allowed 14 runs and 17 hits over 8 2/3 innings over the past two outings. He is 2-2 with a 5.94 ERA over six career appearances, including five starts, against the Red Sox.

      Coldest team:
      Angels (0-10 past 10)

The Angels are in a nosedive and they're not showing any signs of pulling out of it. The Halos were broomed in Cleveland in a four-game set over the weekend, their third straight series resulting on the short end of a sweep. The good news is that they return home after a disastrous road trip, but the bad news is that the Seattle Mariners and Felix Hernandez will be awaiting them. The M's have won eight of their past nine, and they're 6-1 in their past seven against right-handed starting pitching while going 5-1 in their past six inside the division. On the flip side, the Angels are 3-14 in their past 17 vs. RHP, 2-14 in their past 16 against winning teams and 0-4 in their past four divisional games.

Hottest pitcher: Max Scherzer, Nationals (12-7, 2.80 ERA)

Scherzer is coming off a hard-luck loss against the Cleveland Indians last time out, as he allowed just one run and three hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts over seven innings Aug. 9. He is 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA and a sparkling 0.73 WHIP over 22 innings with 27 punchouts and just four walks. The Nats have won nine of their past 12, and they're 4-0 in their past four road games against teams with a losing overall record. Washington is also 6-2 in Scherzer's past eight road outings, while the Nats are 11-5 in their past 16 road games against left-handed starting pitching.

Coldest pitcher: Josh Tomlin, Indians (11-5, 4.18 ERA)

Tomlin had been on fire earlier in the season, but he has certainly tailed off of late. In his past three outings he has a 9.19 ERA with a 1.79 WHIP over 15 2/3 innings. He hasn't issued a ton of walks, he has just left plenty of pitches over the plate and he has been getting hammered. As mentioned above, he has struggled over his career against the Red Sox. And while he has a 5-2 record in nine home starts, he has a 4.33 ERA and opponents are hitting a robust .275 against him at Progressive Field over 52 innings.

      Biggest UNDER run:
      Royals (11-4 past 15)

The Royals are in the midst of a long-term 'under' run, and the under is 3-1 in their past four against the Tigers, including 2-1 in their three games at Comerica Park this season. The under is a perfect 5-0 in Kansas City's past five against a team with a winning overall record, and 5-1 in their past six road outings against left-handed starting pitching. The under has also cashed in six stragiht starts by Ian Kennedy, and 5-1 in his past six assignments against teams with a winning overall mark.

      Biggest OVER run:
      Rays (8-1 past nine, 11-4 past 15)

The Rays pitching staff has allowed six or more runs in five of the past seven games, and Drew Smyly has been very hittable so another 'over' is likely coming. The over is 11-3-3 in Smyly's past 17 starts overall, and 6-2-1 in his past nine on astroturf. The over is also 4-1 in San Diego's past five against teams with a losing record, 6-2-1 in their past nine interleague games against a southpaw and 18-7-2 in their past 27 interleague games.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks vs. Mets
The Mets hit the road trying to get on track after an ugly homestand and inability to piece together a win streak. The Mets have managed a 1-11 record in their past 12 games following a win. They're also just 4-13 in their past 17 against National League West teams, 1-5 in their past six against left-handed starting pitching and 2-7 in their past nine games against teams with an overall losing record. The Diamondbacks have also been struggling, posting an 0-5 mark in their past five home games against teams with a winning record, and 12-29 in their past 41 games overall. New York has won seven of the past nine in the desert, and the Mets have won nine of Bartolo Colon's past 13 outings, including 5-2 in his past seven road assignments.

      Betcha didn’t know:
Pirates RHP Ryan Vogelsong faces the Giants, his former employer, in Monday's series opener. He has a better knowledge of AT&T Park than his counterpart, Giants LHP Matt Moore, who is making his first career start at his new home park, and just his third with the Giants since coming over in a trade from Tampa Bay. Vogelsong is 9-13 over 40 appearances (36 starts) since the start of the 2013 season in San Francisco, but he has a stellar 3.69 ERA with 179 strikeouts over 221 2/3 innings while posting a .242 opponent batting average.

Biggest public favorite: Rays (-170) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: Reds (+120) vs. Marlins

Biggest line move: Angels (+135 to +115) vs. Mariners

                August 16, 2016

CLEVELAND (AP) David Ortiz hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in a three-run sixth inning, and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians 3-2 on Monday to extend their winning streak to four.

Ortiz's 27th home run of his farewell season was the 530th of his big league career. Ortiz homered in all three games the Red Sox played in Cleveland this season.

One out later, Jackie Bradley Jr. also homered off Josh Tomlin (11-6), who has given up a major league-leading 29 home runs this season.

Drew Pomeranz (1-2) allowed two runs in 7 2/3 innings to win for the first time since he was acquired from San Diego on July 14. He had been 0-2 in five starts for the Red Sox.

Selected by Cleveland with the fifth overall pick in the 2011 amateur draft, Pomeranz gave up Rajai Davis' leadoff homer in the fourth and RBI double in the eighth.

Craig Kimbrel escaped a ninth-inning jam for his 20th save in 22 chances.

AL Central-leading Cleveland had won its previous four games.

The game was a makeup of an April 7 postponement caused by snow and cold.

                YANKEES 1, BLUE JAYS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Chad Green struck out 11 in six dominant innings, Aaron Judge delivered again with an RBI double and Dellin Betances escaped a big ninth-inning jam, leading New York over Toronto.

Betances got major league RBI leader Edwin Encarnacion to ground into a game-ending, around-the-horn double play with runners at the corners.

The Yankees won for the fifth time in six games, taking the first 1-0 decision between the teams since 2005. They dropped Toronto percentage points out of first place in the AL East and pulled within 5 1/2 games of new division leader Baltimore.

Promoted earlier in the day from Triple-A for his fifth stint of the season with the Yankees, Green (2-2) was in complete control. He gave up two hits, walked none and outpitched R.A. Dickey (8-13).

Tyler Clippard, Adam Warren and Betances combined for scoreless relief. Betances held on for his fifth save as the Yankees stopped a five-game losing streak to Toronto.

                ROYALS 3, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Ian Kennedy pitched effectively into the seventh inning to win for the first time since June 26 as Kansas City beat Detroit.

The Tigers lost Miguel Cabrera after four innings to a strained left biceps. Cabrera appeared to injure himself in a first-inning collision with Cheslor Cuthbert at first base, but batted twice before leaving the game.

Detroit said the slugger is day to day.

Kennedy (7-9) ended an eight-start winless streak, allowing one run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Three relievers finished, with Kelvin Herrera pitching the ninth for his fifth save.

Daniel Norris (1-1) gave up two runs - one earned - in 5 1/3 innings. He made the error that led to the unearned run.

                J.D. Martinez homered for Detroit.

                RANGERS 5, ATHLETICS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre hit a grand slam not long after Texas ended a 24-inning scoreless streak, and Martin Perez earned his first win since late June to lead the Rangers over Oakland.

Beltre's 100th home run at Globe Life Park came against former teammate Ross Detwiler (1-1) in the fifth with Texas trailing 2-1. His 10th career slam came three batters after Shin-Soo Choo broke his left forearm when he was hit by a pitch.

The AL West-leading Rangers were coming off consecutive shutout losses at home to Detroit.

Perez (8-8) gave up two runs - one earned - in seven innings. He had gone 0-4 over his past eight starts.

Sam Dyson closed for his 27th save.

Beltre's 19th homer gave him 432 to break a tie with Cal Ripken on the career list.

                MARLINS 6, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Chris Johnson drove in two runs with a homer and a double, former reliever David Phelps pitched into the sixth inning in his third start of the season and Miami won the opener of its four-game series against Cincinnati.

Marcell Ozuna also homered and Dee Gordon beat Joey Votto's high toss to pitcher Blake Wood covering first base for a bases-loaded, two-run infield single. The wild card-contending Marlins have won two straight after a three-game skid. Both wins have come since Giancarlo Stanton was lost Saturday for what is expected to be at least six weeks with a groin injury.

Phelps (6-6) struck out a season-high eight while allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Fernando Rodney got three outs for his 21st save in 23 tries.

Scott Schebler homered for the Reds to snap an 0-for-28 slump. Brandon Finnegan (7-9) allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings.

                RAYS 8, PADRES 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Drew Smyly allowed just a solo homer over seven innings of one-hit ball, and Tampa Bay got home runs from Logan Forsythe and Kevin Kiermaier in its victory over San Diego.

Alexei Ramirez hit his fifth homer and Derek Norris walked twice - those were the only baserunners against Smyly (5-11).

Brad Boxberger and Kevin Jepsen completed the three-hitter, with Jepsen allowing a single to Wil Myers and a homer to Yangervis Solarte in the ninth.

Forsythe hit his fifth homer in his last 13 games off Luis Perdomo (5-7). Kiermaier had a three-run drive in a five-run eighth that made it 8-1. He had three hits and two stolen bases.

                NATIONALS 5, ROCKIES 4

DENVER (AP) - Jayson Werth and Wilson Ramos homered, Bryce Harper doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and Washington beat skidding Colorado despite a lackluster start from Max Scherzer.

Washington's bullpen pitched five scoreless innings and Colorado-native Mark Melancon earned his 34th save in 37 chances. Sammy Solis (2-3) got the win.

The NL East leaders have won three straight and four of five.

Werth hit a two-run homer and reached safely three times to extend his on-base streak to a career-best 43 games. The stretch is the longest in the majors this season it ties Ryan Zimmerman for the Nationals record.

DJ LeMahieu had four hits and Charlie Blackmon hit his sixth home run in four games. Still, the Rockies have lost eight of nine.

Jordan Lyles (3-4) took the loss.

                PIRATES 8, GIANTS 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Gregory Polanco had a homer and four RBIs, Ryan Vogelsong won in his return to AT&T Park and Pittsburgh beat San Francisco.

Andrew McCutchen added two hits, two RBIs and a spectacular catch in the eighth inning to help Pittsburgh move within one game of idle St. Louis for the second NL wild card.

That was enough for Vogelsong (2-2) to win despite an up-and-down outing.

Vogelsong, who spent parts of seven seasons with the Giants and won two World Series, allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings. He received an extended standing ovation in the first inning and again when he left in the sixth.

The right-hander won for the first time since coming off the 60-day disabled list after being hit in the face by a pitch on May 23.

Denard Span had three hits, including a home run, and Eduardo Nunez also went deep for the Giants.

Polanco hit a two-run double off starter Matt Moore (0-2) and drove in two more with his 17th homer.

Tony Watson, the fourth Pirates reliever, retired three batters for his sixth save.

                DIAMONDBACKS 10, METS 6

PHOENIX (AP) - Welington Castillo, just back from a six-day leave due to complications with the birth of his son, matched his career high of four hits to lead Arizona over New York.

Castillo doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice for the last-place Diamondbacks, who swept three games from the defending NL champions last week in New York.

Bartolo Colon (10-7) drew the first walk of his 19-year major league career but lasted just four innings.

Robbie Ray (5-11) allowed two runs in five innings for his first victory in five starts. One of his two walks went to the 43-year-old Colon on a 3-2 pitch. It came in Colon's 282nd career plate appearance. According to ESPN Stats & Info, no other player in major league history had that many plate appearances without walking.

                MARINERS 3, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Nelson Cruz hit his 30th home run to lead Felix Hernandez and Seattle past Los Angeles as the Angels matched a franchise record with their 11th consecutive defeat.

Hernandez (7-4) struck out eight and pitched into the seventh inning to help the Mariners remain two games behind Boston for the second AL wild card.

The Angels had lost 11 straight on three other occasions, but never under manager Mike Scioscia. Last in the AL West, Los Angeles (49-69) is a season-high 20 games under .500.

The last time the team dropped 11 in a row was during the 1999 season.

Ricky Nolasco (4-10) took the loss.

Mike Trout homered and stole his 20th base, marking the third time he's reached 20 home runs and 20 steals in a season.

Edwin Diaz earned his seventh save with a perfect ninth inning.

                • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Updated NFL over/under win totals for this season, from Westgate:

                  — Arizona Cardinals 10, over -$150

                  — Dallas Cowboys 9, over -$125

                  — Denver Broncos 9.5, under -$130

                  — Jacksonville Jaguars 7.5, over -$120

                  — Philadelphia Eagles 6.5, under -$130

                  — Tennessee Titans 5.5, over -$160

                  **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                  13) Week 1 college football handicapping dilemma: Southern Miss visits Kentucky in the season opener. Shannon Dawson is USM’s offensive coordinator; LY he had the same job at Kentucky, so who does that favor?

Dawson knows the Wildcats’ personnel very well, but Kentucky practiced against his offense every day last year, so they might know the offense better than the Eagles, at least this early in the season. Interesting game to handicap.

                  12) Saw last night that Showtime has a reality series coming out on Ben Simmons this October; now we might find out why LSU’s season LY was such a debacle. A freshman shows up from Australia with a camera crew following him all over the place; always a great thing for team chemistry.

                  11) There is a series on Starz now called “Power”; saw it for the first time Sunday night. Not the most uplifting program; a mother/son were snorting coke together, about 20 minutes before the son strangled his girlfriend because she hired killers to off one of the son’s friends (that plot failed when the two shooters were shot/killed). Apparently Carmelo Anthony’s wife is in this show, but didn’t see her in last night’s episode. Doubtful if I’ll watch it again.

                  10) South Carolina’s punter was recently arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and “malicious injury to a tree”, whatever that means. The young man won’t be suspended by the Gamecocks, meaning that he is a way better punter than anyone else South Carolina has.

                  9) San Diego Padres have been no-hit nine times, but have never thrown a no-hitter. Matt Kemp hit for the cycle LY, the first Padre ever to do that, which is surprising, seeing as Dave Winfield/Tony Gwynn were Padres.

                  8) Philadelphia Soul @ Arizona Rattlers is the Arena Bowl matchup on August 26. Arenaball is great fun; we had a team here for 10 years and I had season tickets. Antonio Brown’s father Eddie was the Albany Firebirds’ best player- they won the 1999 Arena Bowl.

                  7) When AFL games are on TV and there is a replay review, the ref takes you right behind the replay curtain and talks the viewer thru the review. Would it kill the NFL to try something like that in preseason games?

                  6) QB Thad Lewis is trying out for the 49ers’ 3rd-string QB job; the 49ers are his 7th NFL team. A Duke grad, I liked Lewis when he played for the Rams, but he never got that much of a chance to play- his college coach was David Cutcliffe, a noted QB guru, so he has been well-schooled. Hope he sticks in the league this year, although hopefully not for the 49ers (Rams rivals).

                  5) Detroit Lions have three former college head coaches as assistant coaches now, one of whom is Randy Edsall, who spent last 16 years as head coach at UConn, Maryland.

27 of 32 NFL teams have at least one former NFL head coach as an assistant coach, but 22 of those 27 have only one ex-head coach. Minnesota has three.

                  4) When whiny media talk about “pace of play issues” in baseball, this is what they’re talking about: Kevin Gausman pitched 4 innings for the Orioles Sunday in San Francisco, throwing 97 pitches. Of those 97 pitches, only 5 resulted in a ball being put in play. That’s not a lot of action.

                  3) Hoosiers was on TV late one night last week, so I watched it (again). One of the great things about Hoosiers is that supposedly, Spike Lee absolutely HATES this movie. Gee I wonder why.

Anyway, nothing is as funny as high school kids reminding the coach “I think Jimmy can take his man” every 10 minutes. I mean, even Dennis Hopper’s character, who winds up in a detox ward in the movie, knew enough to give Jimmy the ball when it mattered.

                  2) Dallas Cowboys had only 11 takeaways LY joining the ’82 Colts, ’13 Texans for fewest in modern era. A minus-22 turnover ratio leaves a lot of room for improvement this year.

                  1) Red Sox are 13-0 when Rick Porcello starts at Fenway; they’ve scored 101 runs (7.8 rpg) in those 13 games.

                            • LEADING OFF: Red Sox on the road again, Taillon breaking out
                              August 16, 2016
                              ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace
A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                              FREQUENT FLYERS

The Red Sox open a two-game series at Baltimore, their third game in three cities over three days. Boston won 16-2 at home against Arizona on Sunday, then won in Cleveland on Monday in a makeup of a postponement from April 7. Eduardo Rodriguez (2-5, 5.43 ERA) tries to build on his resurgence since returning from a midseason demotion to Triple-A when he faces Orioles right-hander Yovani Gallardo (4-4, 5.17).

                              FINGERS CROSSED

The second-place Tigers hope for good news on slugger Miguel Cabrera, who left Monday night's 3-1 loss to Kansas City with a left biceps strain. Detroit manager Brad Ausmus didn't think the injury was serious. ''We'll wait and see how he feels (Tuesday),'' Ausmus said. ''But I wouldn't be surprised if he tells me he's fine and he wants to play.'' The two-time AL MVP is hitting .310 with 27 homers and 77 RBIs.

                              BREAKOUT BUCCO

Pirates rookie right-hander Jameson Taillon (3-2, 2.85 ERA) follows up a dominant outing against San Diego when he pitches against the NL West-leading Giants. Taillon tossed eight innings of three-hit ball in a 4-0 win over the Padres, throwing more than 100 pitches for the second time with Pittsburgh this season. Jeff Samardzija (10-8, 4.23) is up for San Francisco, coming off 5 2/3 scoreless innings against Miami.

                              CAHILL OPENS TWINBILL

Trevor Cahill (1-3, 3.07) will return from the disabled list and make his first start since April 26, 2015, in Game 1 of the Cubs' day-night doubleheader against the Brewers. Cahill, a reliever since being acquired by Chicago last June, has been on a rehab assignment working his way back from right knee tendinitis. He hasn't pitched more than four innings in an outing during that time, so the opener might become a bullpen game for the Cubs. Matt Garza (4-4, 4.83) opposes Cahill in Game 1, then Chicago right-hander Jason Hammel (12-5, 2.90) faces righty Chase Anderson (7-10, 4.93) in the nightcap.

                              TRY AGAIN

The Mets hope to solve Arizona rookie Braden Shipley (2-1, 2.96 ERA). The right-hander pitched seven innings of three-hit ball in a 9-0 win over New York last Thursday in his fourth major league start. Noah Syndergaard (9-7, 2.75) took the loss in that game after allowing three runs in five innings.

                              CELLAR DWELLERS

The Braves and Twins start a two-game set pitting the two worst teams in baseball. Atlanta (44-74) has lost four of five and will give right-hander Joel De La Cruz (0-5, 4.09 ERA) another shot at his first major league victory. Minnesota (47-71) has dropped five of six, and after an 11-4 defeat against Kansas City on Sunday, manager Paul Molitor said his players are competing to keep their jobs for next season.

                              • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
                                August 16, 2016

                                Hottest team:
                                Nationals (9-2 last 11)

Washington erased a 3-0 deficit to edge Colorado, 5-4 on Monday at Coors Field as nearly -200 favorites to win its third straight game. Max Scherzer lasted only four innings as he allowed seven hits and four earned runs, but the Nationals’ bullpen didn’t give up a single run in the final five innings. Washington’s offense has woken up after a three-game stretch earlier this month in which the Nats scored exactly one run, as Dusty Baker’s team has plated 33 runs in the past five games. The Nationals send out southpaw Gio Gonzalez to the mound tonight at Coors Field, as he is coming off back-to-back home wins over the Giants and Indians. However, Washington owns a 1-6 record in Gonzalez’s last seven road starts.

Coldest team: Angels (0-11 last 11)

What has happened to the Halos? Los Angeles bolted out of the All-Star break with consecutive home sweeps of Chicago and Texas, but crashed back to Earth. The Angels are currently riding an 11-game losing streak, but since that perfect homestand, Mike Scoscia’s club owns a dreadful 6-17 record. To be fair, 13 of those defeats have come on the highway, even though the Angels were tripped up at home by the streaking Mariners on Monday, 3-2. The Angels’ offense hasn’t produced lately by scoring two runs or less in five of the past eight losses, which has resulted in six UNDERS in this span.

                                Hottest pitcher:
Jameson Taillon, Pirates (3-2, 2.85 ERA)

Pittsburgh has played better of late by winning four of its last five games, including Monday’s 8-5 triumph at San Francisco. Taillon has turned into a reliable starter for the Pirates in his rookie season by tossing at least six innings in six consecutive outings, while the Bucs are 7-2 in his past nine trips to the mound. The right-hander put together his second start of eight scoreless innings in a 4-0 victory over the Padres in his last outing, scattering only three hits, while posting his sixth straight quality start. The Pirates are listed as a short underdog at San Francisco tonight as Pittsburgh owns a 4-1 record in its past five opportunities as a road ‘dog.

Coldest pitcher: Jhoulys Chacin, Angels (3-8, 5.84 ERA)

The Los Angeles starting rotation has been terrible all season, while Chacin hasn’t produced at all when given an opportunity. The former Colorado hurler was racked for seven earned runs in less than two innings of work in his last start at Cleveland, while allowing 31 earned runs in his previous six starts. In this span, Los Angeles owns a 1-5 record, but the only victory came at home against Minnesota in mid-June. Chacin faces the Mariners tonight, who the Angels actually beat as a +145 road underdog on May 14 as the right-hander limited Seattle to five hits and two earned runs in seven innings of work.

                                Biggest UNDER run:
                                Padres (4-2 last six)

Even though this isn’t an impressive UNDER stretch, let’s focus more on San Diego’s recent offensive woes. Since the Padres posted five runs in the first inning of Friday’s blowout of the Mets, San Diego has plated eight runs in the last 35 innings, including two in Monday’s 8-2 defeat at Tampa Bay. Edwin Jackson takes the mound for San Diego tonight, as the journeyman right-hander has compiled four UNDERS in his last five starts, while holding his own in two road outings at Pittsburgh and Washington by giving up two earned runs in 13 innings.

Biggest OVER run: Phillies (9-0 last nine)

When the Phillies and Dodgers met in southern California last week, all three games finished OVER the total. The two teams switch coasts and start a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park as Philadelphia’s offense has been on fire by scoring 23 runs in a weekend sweep of Colorado. All three contests sailed OVER the total, while the Phillies have plated at least five runs seven times in the last nine games. Six of the last seven games at Citizens Bank Park have eclipsed the OVER, as Vince Velasquez takes the mound for Philadelphia tonight, trying to improve on a 1.72 ERA at home.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Orioles

The AL East has turned into a three-horse race between Baltimore, Boston, and Toronto. This trio is separated by one game as the Sox travel to Camden Yards following Monday’s make-up game victory at Cleveland. The Orioles return home from a 5-5 road trip, capped off by erasing a 7-1 deficit in Sunday’s 8-7 triumph at San Francisco. Baltimore owns the best home record in the American League at 39-17, while the Orioles are riding an 11-game UNDER streak at Camden Yards.

Yovani Gallardo heads to the mound for Baltimore in the series opener, as the right-hander has seen his most success at home with Baltimore posting a 5-0 record in his five starts at Camden Yards. In Gallardo’s previous outing against the Red Sox in April, the veteran allowed five earned runs in five innings but the Orioles outlasted the Sox, 9-7 as +170 underdogs. Eduardo Rodriguez counters for Boston, as the Sox own a dreadful 2-7 record in his past nine trips to the mound. Boston has beaten Baltimore only once in Rodriguez’s five career starts against them, a 6-2 triumph at Camden Yards on May 31.

                                Betcha didn’t know:
The Mets haven’t had any luck against the Diamondbacks this season, losing all four meetings, including Monday’s series opener at Chase Field. Mets’ right-hander Noah Syndergaard looks to rebound after allowing eight hits and three earned runs in five innings of a 9-0 home loss to Arizona as a -230 favorite last Thursday. Syndergaard is back on the mound tonight in the desert, as New York owns a 5-2 record in his seven road starts this season.

                                Biggest public favorite:
                                Indians (-200) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Rockies (+115) vs. Nationals

                                Biggest line move:
Rays (-150 to -170) vs. Padres
