  • Cardinals slugger Matt Holliday breaks right thumb on HBP
    August 12, 2016

CHICAGO (AP) St. Louis left fielder Matt Holliday has a broken right thumb and is out indefinitely after getting hit by a pitch in the Cardinals' 4-3, 11-inning loss to the Cubs.

Reliever Mike Montgomery plunked the seven-time All-Star with a 94 mph fastball on a 1-1 count with two outs and nobody on in the 10th on Thursday night.

Holliday immediately grabbed his right hand. He walked to first base accompanied by the trainer before leaving the field.

An X-ray showed the break. Holliday wouldn't say if he felt his season was over. He'll see a hand specialist Friday and says it's ''super disappointing but it's part of sport, unfortunately.''

St. Louis is 13 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central but is in the wild-card hunt.

Montgomery said ''it wasn't on purpose'' and he was just trying to pitch inside.

    • Unlike Jeter, A-Rod leaves Yankees without fans' love
      August 12, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) Alex Rodriguez's time with the New York Yankees will be remembered for one World Series title, two MVP awards and countless controversies.

And for him not being Derek Jeter.

''When I'm amongst Yankee fans and the conversation turns to him, he's not held with great fondness,'' said Marty Appel, author of ''Pinstripe Empire: The New York Yankees from Before the Babe to After the Boss.''

''There was just something about the way he related to people over the years that fell short of a warm embrace, whether it was body language or dating celebrities,'' said Appel, a former Yankees media relations director and television producer. ''The rank-and-file lunch-box-carrying people just never really took to him.''

Perhaps the most talented and notorious player of his era, Rodriguez is set to play his final game for the Yankees on Friday night at home against Tampa Bay. New York plans to release A-Rod after the game, even though the team must pay him about $7 million for the rest of this season and $20 million more next year.

''I think it's going to be a crazy, electric stadium. I think there will be plenty of applause and there will be plenty of boos because people love to hate him,'' said ''Bald'' Vinny Milano of the Yankee Stadium Bleacher Creatures, who became an A-Rod fan after meeting him at a charity event. ''There are always going to be Yankees fans who hate the guy, no matter what his on-field accomplishments were, no matter how great of a player he was on the field. Outside influences affect their opinion of the guy - whether they're right, wrong or indifferent. They attack his personality or his attitude. But if you look at baseball only, there's no way you can't say he's one of the best who ever played the game.''

Mariano Rivera got a sendoff tour, leaving the Yankee Stadium mound for the final time in tears when Jeter and Andy Pettitte removed him three years ago, setting off a thunderous 4-minute ovation.

Jeter, like Rivera a five-time World Series champion, got another round-the-league farewell and hit a game-winning single versus Baltimore on his final swing at Yankee Stadium in September 2014, raising both arms in triumph.

Mark Teixeira is still starting and will remain with the team until the end of the season after announcing this will be the final season.

Rodriguez, usually Yin to Jeter's Yang, has been told pretty much to hit the road quickly with his .199 average as the Yankees turn to youth. He is being given a position as an adviser to mentor prospects next year, and his goodbye takes place with an undertone of good riddance.

''My job description does not entail a farewell tour,'' manager Joe Girardi said Wednesday, explaining Rodriguez's disappearance from the lineup.

A-Rod, who turned 41 last month, has hit .283 with 351 homers and 1,095 RBIs for the Yankees, helping lead them win their 27th Series title in 2009 but often failing in other postseasons.

But for some fans, he will never be in the same category as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra and Jeter.

A-Rod's career was tainted by his 2009 admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs while with Texas from 2001-03 and his season-long suspension in 2014 for violations of baseball's drug agreement and labor contract. Fans at ballparks on the road held up signs deriding him as ''A-Roid'' and ''Cheater.''

Before the World Series title, he was considered an automatic October out, his stature diminished by an 8-for-59 (.136) postseason funk from 2004-07 that included 18 consecutive hitless at-bats with runners in scoring position. And he leaves with just six postseason RBIs in his last 79 at-bats.

Still, he did hit .365 with six homers and 18 RBIs in the 2009 postseason. He did have 13 consecutive seasons with at least 30 homers and 100 RBIs, seven of those years with the Yankees. And 1,578 of his 3,114 hits and a majority of his 696 home runs have been for New York.

He was on the field for spring training workouts at sunrise, perhaps the hardest worker on a team of proven professionals. He became a 14-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove shortstop and the 1996 AL batting champion. He trails only Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714) in home runs, and his 2,084 RBIs are second to Aaron's 2,297 since RBIs became an official statistic.

But Rodriguez was never just about baseball.

He made tabloid headlines for his divorce; dating Madonna, Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz and Torrie Wilson; for sunbathing shirtless in Central Park; walking through a Toronto hotel lobby with a blond stripper; participating in high-stakes celebrity poker games; selling his Miami house for $30 million; and living in a Manhattan condominium with tax abatement.

There were the lawsuits, later dropped, against Major League Baseball; the Major League Baseball Players Association, Yankees head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

''Who brought more shame to the franchise? How many Yankee immortals sued the team doctor? The players association? Baseball itself?'' said broadcaster and baseball historian Keith Olbermann, whose family had Yankees season tickets from 1972-2012. ''Reggie (Jackson) got to three World Series in five seasons. Billy Martin? Seven in 15, right? Alex's era with the Yankees is one of the most barren in franchise history. There will be no reason for the fans to recall him fondly or even positively.''

Even before Rodriguez was dealt to the Yankees by Texas in February 2004, he often was in the center of a storm. His record $252 million, 10-year contract with the Rangers in December 2000 put A-Rod in a permanent spotlight. In the April 2001 issue of Esquire, he transformed from Jeter's friend to frenemy.

''Jeter's been blessed with great talent around him. He's never had to lead,'' Rodriguez was quoted as saying. ''You go into New York, you wanna stop Bernie (Williams) and (Paul) O'Neill. You never say, `Don't let Derek beat you. He's never your concern.'''

Former manager Joe Torre's 2009 book with Tom Verducci said some teammates referred to Rodriguez as ''A-Fraud'' and compared A-Rod's supposed obsession with Jeter to the movie ''Single White Female.'' That same year, Details magazine ran a photo of Rodriguez kissing his reflection in a mirror. Always concerned about his appearance, Rodriguez always emerged from the showers fully clothed in the clubhouse at new Yankee Stadium, never wanting to be seen getting dressed.

A-Rod famously was called out for interference when he swatted at Boston pitcher Bronson Arroyo's glove and knocked the ball loose during the 2004 AL Championship Series, three months after Arroyo hit Rodriguez with a pitch, causing A-Rod and catcher Jason Varitek to spark a brawl.

Rodriguez's decision to opt out of his $252 million contract became public during the final game of Boston's 2007 World Series victory. His record $275 million, 10-year deal to stay with the Yankees was finalized on the same day the Mitchell Report on drugs in baseball was released.

With A-Rod's body broken down from six trips to the disabled list since 2008 and his skills diminished, the Yankees have no use for him.

In making his announcement last weekend, Rodriguez admitted he's ''been to hell and back, and made every mistake in the book.''

His place in history will be a permanent debate.

''If he had any kind of personal epiphany at the end it came, like any Shakespearean tragic hero, too late,'' Olbermann said. ''Macbeth was still a villain. This guy, too.''

      • Friday's Diamond Notes
        August 12, 2016

        Hottest team:
        Cubs (10-0 last 10, 13-1 last 14)
The Cubs dodged a major bullet against the Cardinals in the first of their four-game set last night. Carlos Martinez was one strike away from getting out of a three-run sixth, while Matt Carpenter was one bases-loaded hit away from making matters look bleak in the 11th. Chicago got what it needed all night and is leading a charmed life as it looks for an 11th consecutive win. Rival St. Louis had to put Matt Adams on the disabled list entering this series and then lost Matt Holliday to a broken hand when he was hit by a pitch in the 10th. Aledmys Diaz is also still out, so the Cubs are definitely facing a depleted rival in Friday's matinee, but -180 sure is steep, even with Jake Arrieta (13-5, 2.59) on the mound. Adam Wainwright (9-6, 4.34), has already pitched in two wins against the Cubs this season, so the Cardinals (+160) may be enticing despite their wounded state. Chicago closer Aroldis Chapman has pitched the last two nights and hasn’t pitched in three straight since June 4-6, the only time the Yankees did that with him this season. Key setup man Pedro Strop also went on the DL Thursday after suffering a knee injury, so Joe Maddon may have to be creative with his bullpen if Jake Arrieta can’t duplicate his last effort, where he worked eight shutout innings at Oakland. Wainwright comes off one of his worst performances of the season, losing 6-3 to Atlanta.

Coldest team: Angels (0-7 last seven)
The Angels aren’t having any fun on this road trip. After being swept out of town by the Mariners and Cubs, they hit Cleveland on Thursday and found starter Jhoulys Chacin had absolutely nothing to offer. In a rain-filled 14-4 loss, Chacin lasted 1.1 innings, allowing seven runs, while middle reliever Brett Oberholtzer was later touched up for six runs in 1.2. The Indians banged out 14 hits. On the bright side, Mike Trout did hit his 22nd homer and the Angels showed no quit by stringing together some hits in the ninth, but they’ll be an underdog (+135) against the Tribe (-145) again. The number isn’t as significant as one would think, likely because lefty starter Tyler Skaggs (1-0, 2.04) might be their best chance at finally tasting a road victory on this trip. Cleveland’s Carlos Carrasco (7-6, 3.17) has lost his last three decisions, seeing his ERA balloon from 2.31 in that span.

        Hottest pitcher:
        Stephen Strasburg (15-2, 2.80 ERA)
This designation is out of respect for what he’s done all season. After all, the NL’s wins leader isn’t exactly riding a wave of positive momentum. He’s 2-2 over his last four starts and comes off his shortest outing of the season, failing to get out of the fifth in giving up four runs on eight hits against the Giants. Strasburg remains the leader in the clubhouse for the NL Cy Young, so it’s no surprise the Nationals are the heaviest favorite (-260) on Friday’s card against Atlanta, who he beat for his first victory of 2016. Mike Foltynewicz (5-5, 4.37) defeated St. Louis’ Wainwright in his last start, helping the Braves cash as +190 dogs, so you know they’ll get some love with books offering +230 here. Foltynewicz allowed one run on six hits against the Cards and may not have to face Bryce Harper, who has missed the last three games with a stiff neck and remains questionable.

Coldest pitcher: Anibal Sanchez (6-11, 5.88 ERA)
We’re taking the body of work into account here too, since Sanchez has actually been terrific in August, surrendering a single run in each of his two starts. He beat the White Sox and Mets at home, so the degree of difficulty increases significantly here since he’ll be facing a loaded Rangers lineup that has averaged six runs over the last five games. Sanchez has a 7.38 road ERA and has won just two of eight decisions outside of Comerica Park, with the only win that came in a start coming way back on April 6. If you believe that the 2.70 ERA and 17 strikeouts over his last three starts is Sanchez turning the corner, the +180 the Tigers are getting at most books against Texas (-200). Yu Darvish is a perfect 5-0 with a 3.60 ERA against the Tigers, though he hasn’t seen them in more than two years. Despite no wins since coming off the DL, Darvish has pitched very well. The Rangers have the third-best home mark (35-18) in baseball behind Chicago (40-17) and Baltimore (39-17).

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (8-3, last 11, 24-5 last 29)
After managing just three runs over the first three losses in its series at Oakland and going scoreless over the first three frames on Thursday, Baltimore put together a pair of big innings and held on for a 9-6 win. Mark Trumbo’s grand slam, his league-leading 32nd homer of the season, provides hope that the O’s can snap out of their funk that has led to so many low-scoring games over the last month, a stretch that dates to the weekend before the All-Star break. The Birds are getting great pitching, but have collectively slumped outside of the long ball, an issue that could be exacerbated by this trip to San Francisco, where Madison Bumgarner looms Saturday and Johnny Cueto goes Sunday. While those guys have been slumping themselves, you can understand that the best chance Baltimore (-122) will have to win from an odds perspective will be tonight’s game, which matches talented 23-year-old Dylan Bundy (5-3, 3.05) and veteran Matt Cain (4-6, 5.16). Bundy has surrendered three earned runs or less in each of his last four starts, which is more significant since he’s only made five. Meanwhile, Cain has pitched 10 shutout innings over his last two starts, both wins. The under is 18-7-1 in Giants games over the last 26. The total opened at 8 here, but has slipped to 7.5 at most shops.

Biggest OVER run: Phillies (6-0 last six, 8-1 last nine)
The Phillies have put together some of the season’s most heinous offensive numbers and didn’t help post more than two consecutive ‘overs’ until early June. At that point, they did have a 22-10 over run, taking advantage of the low bar often set by their low-scoring start, but they’ve taken things to another level of late. Only one under has come in during a Phils game this entire month, so it will be fun to see if the bats keep producing in spite of their pitching continuing to fade as the Rockies come to town. Colorado scored 12 runs in Arlington on Thursday and will have ace Jon Gray (8-5, 4.26) on the mound, while Philadelphia counters with rookie Jake Thompson (0-1, 12.46), who was blown up by the Padres in his ML debut, suffering a 9-7 loss in San Diego last Saturday. The total has been set at 8.5.

Matchup to watch: Rays at Yankees
Alex Rodriguez’s final game (with the Yankees) is drawing major attention and will certainly create an event atmosphere at Yankee Stadium. Ironically, dealing star relievers Chapman and Andrew Miller has done little to derail New York’s shot at the second AL Wild Card. After consecutive wins at Boston, they’ll open play just 3.5 games behind the Red Sox in that race, which means Joe Girardi is doing the right thing in “playing to win” and limiting A-Rod to DH duties as opposed to letting him finish out on the field. Whether Rodriguez catches on elsewhere remains to be seen, but the fact the Bronx should be rocking makes it surprising to see bookmakers dismiss any potential homefield advantage, installing Tampa Bay (-125) as a road favorite behind MLB loss leader Chris Archer (6-15, 4.26). Archer does have a great history against New York and CC Sabathia (6-9, 4.18) has largely struggled over the last few months, but it’s still a surprise to see the Yanks (+110) as a ‘dog here. Then again, it’s unlikely closer Dellin Betances would be available since he’s worked the last two nights and hasn’t pitched three straight since May 4-6.

Betcha didn’t know: Seattle's Angel Miranda will pitch in his first big-league ballpark not named Safeco Field. That might not sound like much since he's a rookie, but because the 27-year-old Cuban defector has quite the story, it makes his taking the mound in Oakland quite interesting. Miranda was considered one of the top pitchers in his native land and has a similar story of coming over as many Cubans who seeked out a better life, getting caught trying to escape multiple times before finally making it to Haiti to establish residency. The Orioles signed him in 2015, developed him for over a year and unleashed him in Seattle for his major league debut back on July 3. Despite the Mariners touching him up for three runs on four hits in two innings, their front office liked what they saw so much that they traded fellow southpaw Wade Miley for him. Since it sent down slumping former star prospect Taijuan Walker, Seattle is clearly counting on Miranda to emerge as a factor at the back end of their rotation down the stretch. It will be interesting to see how he fares, but he was strong in his first start, pitching six innings of two-run ball against Boston's big bats. Miranda picked up a no-decision in a 3-2 loss, but got his first MLB win this past Tuesday despite coming out of the bullpen against Detroit to give up a homer in the top of the 15th when the Mariners bailed him out by beating K-Rod. The books have a Mariners squad that has won an AL-best six straight games listed as an underdog (+115) at the A's (-130), who just won three of four against, but of course, Baltimore. Sean Manaea will pitch for Oakland.

Biggest public favorite: Rockies (-140) at Phillies

Biggest public underdog: Pirates (+150) at Dodgers

Biggest line move: Rangers (-170 to -200) vs. Tigers

                • MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: Reed between the lines

Sunday sees Cincinnati Reds starter Cody Reed return to action, which could mean a nice payday for over bettors.

We break down all the betting notes you need to handicap this weekend's MLB series, including Cody Reed - one of baseball's most predictable starting pitchers - climbing the hill in Milwaukee against the Brewers on Sunday.

                  Au Revoir, A-Rod

One of baseball’s most polarizing players says farewell Friday night as New York Yankees legend Alex Rodriguez plays his final game in pinstripes. He’ll go toe-to-toe with Tampa Bay Rays starter Chris Archer, against whom he has a pair of home runs - but no other hits - in 15 all-time at-bats. Rodriguez is +450 to hit a home run in the game, and -650 to go without one.

                  Are the Rangers For Real?

The Texas Rangers remain one of the most enigmatic teams in baseball. They’ve won bettors a league-high 2,551 units through 116 games, yet own the worst run differential (-1) of any of the six division leaders. They come into this weekend’s three-game series with the visiting Detroit Tigers on an incredible 1-9-2 O/U run; Saturday starter, lefty Cole Hamels, is 1-4 O/U in his last five.

                  Reed Between the Lines

Sunday sees Cincinnati Reds starter Cody Reed return to action, which could mean a nice payday for over bettors. Reed is a whopping 7-1-1 O/U this season, with teams combining to score an average of better than 11 1/2 runs in Reed’s nine major-league starts heading into the weekend. A Brewers/Over parlay is a solid play, with the Reds having lost all nine of Reed’s starts.

                  Hitting Notes

                  * Rangers catcher Jonathan Lucroy may not have helped boost his team above the total since arriving in Arlington, but he has been a major contributor to the team’s recent winning ways. The trade-deadline acquisition has four homers and six RBIs in eight games since joining the Rangers, who are 6-2 in those contests.

                  * The Houston Astros are a much better play when Jose Altuve is knocking in runs. Altuve drove in three runs in Thursday’s 15-7 triumph over the Minnesota Twins, giving bettors who chose Houston and the over plenty to celebrate. The Astros are 12-6 SU and 13-4-1 O/U in 18 games when Altuve plates multiple runs in a game.

                  Pitching Notes

                  * Bettors waiting for David Price to turn things around may be better off looking elsewhere for the rest of the season. Price has lost the third-most units of any pitcher in the majors (-$1,041), allowing opponents to hit .270 off him. He has just one victory in his last nine starts overall, with Boston going 2-7 in that span.

                  * On the other end of the spectrum, few pitchers have had bettors smiling more than Detroit rookie Michael Fulmer. The new Tigers ace has limited opponents to two or fewer runs in 12 of his last 14 starts, a major contributor to his second-place rank in units won ($1,369). He’ll start Sunday against host Texas.

                  Totals Trend

The Toronto Blue Jays have played to the under in nine of their last 11 games and have the worst O/U record in the majors at 45-65-5. That stretch includes four straight unders earlier this month against the Houston Astros, who visit Rogers Centre for a three-game set beginning Friday night.

                  Friday's Weather Report

                  * There is a 65 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms in the Cleveland area for Friday's meeting between the Indians and the Los Angeles Angels. There will also be a 10-15 mph wind blowing straight out to right field. The total is currently set at 8.0.

                  * There will be some thunderstorms in the area around Wrigley Field on Friday evening for Game 2 between the Chicago Cubs and the rival St. Louis Cardinals. The system will bring with it a 60 percent chance of rain showers and a 5-10 mph wind blowing out to center. The total is currently OFF.

                  * The Atlanta Braves will be in Washington, D.C. to take on the Nationals on Friday evening and there is a 20-30 percent chance of thunder showers. There will also be a 5-10 mph wind blowing out the center field. The total is currently set at 7.5.

                  * There is a 40 percent chance of some thunder showers in The Bronx for Friday's meeting between the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays. The total is currently set at 8.5.

                  * The Arizona Diamondbacks are in Boston this weekend for an interleague series against the Red Sox and they could also be up against a thunderstorm on Friday night. There is a 50 percent chance of rain and a 5-10 mph wind blowing out to right field. The total is currently set at 9.5.

                              August 13, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) His pregame tribute ended by a storm, Alex Rodriguez soaked in repeated cheers during his final game in pinstripes, getting one more hit for the New York Yankees and returning to third base one last time.

On a night filled with nostalgia as the Yankees and Rodriguez turn to uncertain futures, baseball's most notorious star of the last two decades drove a 96 mph fastball from Tampa Bay's Chris Archer into the right-center field gap in the first inning of New York's 6-3 victory Friday.

And with the sellout crowd of 46,459 chanting ''We want A-Rod!'' the 41-year-old designated hitter trotted to third base for the first time in 15 months at the start of the ninth inning as the organist played ''Thanks for Memory.'' He was replaced after a leadoff strikeout, hugging his teammates. A-Rod ran back on the field for more hugs after the final out, grabbing a handful of dirt from the infield.

Rodriguez grounded out, struck out and bounced out again on the first pitch in his last at-bat. The 1-for-4 night left him with a .200 average, nine homers and 31 RBIs in his 12th and final Yankees season.

Rodriguez has 696 home runs, fourth on the career list behind Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714). Rodriguez said last Sunday he had accepted an offer to play one final home game and then become a team adviser through 2017, tasked with mentoring young players.

Starlin Castro had four RBIs for the Yankees, hitting a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the sixth off Archer (6-16) that gave CC Sabathia (7-9) his second win since mid-June. Dellin Betances got the save.

                              CUBS 13, CARDINALS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Matt Szczur hit two home runs and Chicago won its 11th straight game, backing Jake Arrieta and battering St. Louis' Adam Wainwright.

Willson Contreras launched a three-run shot to cap a five-run second inning, and Javier Baez and Jorge Soler also went deep to make things easy for Arrieta (14-5).

The Cubs' winning streak is their longest since a 12-game run in 2001. They pulled 14 games ahead of scuffling St. Louis in the NL Central and improved the best record in the majors to 73-41.

Szczur and Kris Bryant each had three hits. The Cubs roughed up Wainwright (9-7) for seven runs and chased him after two innings, tying his shortest outing in 245 career starts.

Arrieta pitched one-run ball into the sixth inning and gave up four hits overall.

Ortiz had three hits, including his 1,000th extra-base hit with Boston. It was all the run support needed for David Price (10-8), who struck out eight in eight innings to pick up the win.

Patrick Corbin (4-12) lasted only 1 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs and nine hits, including both of Ramirez's homers. Rickie Weeks homered for Arizona.

Pat Neshek handled the eighth and Will Harris worked around Encarnacion's homer in the ninth for his 12th save. Francisco Liriano (6-12) was the loser.

                              INDIANS 13, ANGELS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rajai Davis and Jose Ramirez each stole three bases to help Cleveland tie the franchise record with eight, and Brandon Guyer drove in five runs against Los Angeles.

Jason Kipnis and Francisco Lindor added steals for Cleveland to match the record that was first accomplished on Aug. 27, 1917, against the Washington Senators. The eight steals allowed also are the most in club history for the Angels.

Guyer homered in the second and had two-run singles in the fifth and eighth. Ramirez was 3 for 5 with a home run - extending his hitting streak to 16 games - and Kipnis was 4 for 5 for the AL Central leaders.

Los Angeles has lost eight in a row, its longest losing streak since 1999.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to help Jake Thompson earn his first major league victory and lead Philadelphia past Colorado.

Charlie Blackmon hit three solo home runs and D.J. LeMahieu also went deep for Colorado.

Howard extended his franchise record with his 14th grand slam, launching a 1-0 pitch from Jon Gray (8-6) into the bullpen in right-center field to break a 3-3 tie.

Thompson (1-1) earned his first win in his second career start after allowing three runs and two hits with six strikeouts and three walks in five innings. He accomplished a rare feat when he recorded four strikeouts in one inning, becoming the first Phillies pitcher to have four strikeouts in one inning since Doc White did it against Brooklyn in the fifth inning on July 21, 1902.

One day after getting swept at home by last-place Arizona, the Mets again failed to look like legitimate wild-card contenders. San Diego, which has alternated wins and losses since July 26, jumped out to a 5-0 six batters into the game - including Schimpf's grand slam. Logan Verrett (3-8) was the loser.

Salvador Perez's bat broke on a two-strike, two-out, two-run bloop single with the bases loaded that gave the Royals a 4-3 lead. Third baseman Trevor Plouffe awkwardly backpedaled for the slowly rising ball, but it cleared his head and landed in front of diving shortstop Jorge Polanco.

                              • Saturday’s 6-pack

                                — USA 94, Serbia 91– Americans hung on for dear life after leading by 18 early in game- their defense has been poor (88, 91 points) last two games.

                                — Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets had 25 points for Serbia and looked really good doing it.

                                — To me, hitting streaks are a vastly overrated stat; they do not matter.

                                — Hanley Ramirez had two HRs, six RBI in first two innings last night.

                                — Phillies Cesar Hernandez saw 34 pitches on his first three AB last night.

                                — Tyrod Taylor got a 6-year, $92M contract extension from the Bills.

Saturday’s list of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                                13) What does Michael Phelps do with all his gold medals? Does he keep them locked away in a safe? Are they on a wall in his living room? Are there a few in each room? Does he have a pool in his house? Must be fun to be that good at something.

What does Phelps do with his silver medals? Are they at the bottom of some drawer with the old wrenches and screwdrivers?

                                12) This is my annual statement that I don’t think Little League games should be on national TV, it is just too much, too soon for 12-year old kids.

                                11) Joe Girardi is a good manager stuck with an aging, cruddy roster; his New York team is 12-3 in their last 15 games where the winning run scored after the sixth inning.

                                10) Strangely enough, Dodgers are 23-14 since Clayton Kershaw went on the DL.

                                9) New NFL rule: after touchbacks on kickoffs, ball goes to the 25, not the 20-yard line. Most people I’ve heard think this will result in more kick returns, not less, since teams will try to pin opponents inside their 10-yard line with pooch kicks.

                                8) Speaking of kickers, Tampa Bay spent a 2nd-round pick on a kicker from Florida State who never missed a PAT in college. NFL teams rarely use a high draft pick on a kicker; the young man missed his first PAT Thursday night. Oy.

                                7) In that same game, rookie QB Carson Wentz went 12-24 for 89 yards in his NFL debut, throwing a red zone INT but generally doing pretty well. Wentz is not expected to see significant game action for the Eagles this season.

                                6) Brett Favre does a lot of TV commercials for a razor company; wonder what the razor people thought when Favre showed up on Joe Buck’s interview show this week with a full beard?

                                5) Jon Gruden was interviewed this week and compared Rams’ QB Case Keenum to former NFL QB Jeff Garcia, who Gruden coached in San Francisco. That’s a solid compliment coming from Gruden.

                                4) Last night in Miami, Marlins appealed that a White Sox runner missed 2B, while going from first to third on a ground rule double, in the first inning. Never saw that before; the runner (Adam Eaton) stepped right on the middle of the base.

Next time Eaton was up, he wound up going first-to-third on a hit and Miami appealed that he missed second base……again, to no avail.

                                3) Kevin Durant’s return to Oklahoma City isn’t until Feb 11, giving Thunder fans most of the season to cool down. Cavaliers get their championship rings before their Opening Night game against the Knicks.

                                2) Virginia/VCU will play a home/home series, great for college hoop and a sign of respect for the A-14’s Rams. usually ACC teams demand a 2-for-1 deal or won’t go to another team’s home court. Credit to Tony Bennett for this deal.

                                1) Our thoughts/prayers to Arizona catcher Welington Castillo and his wife; there have been complications following the birth of the couple’s second child. Castillo has been placed on the bereavement list. Hopefully mother and child will both emerge from this totally healthy.
