ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Rick Porcello pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game since 2014, Xander Bogaerts homered and drove in three runs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-2 on Friday night.

Porcello (14-2) struck out three while winning his sixth straight start - also for the first time since 2014 - and eighth consecutive decision. He became the majors' fourth 14-game winner, joining Baltimore's Chris Tillman, the Chicago White Sox's Chris Sale, and Washington's Stephen Strasburg.

Porcello hasn't lost since May 17 and he's pitched five or more innings in 29 straight starts dating back to last Aug. 26.

Jackie Bradley Jr. also homered to help Boston end a four-game losing streak.

Tim Lincecum (3-4) continued to struggle in his comeback attempt, giving up four earned runs and five hits with four walks. He was removed after giving up Bradley's homer leading off the sixth.

The loss ended the Angels season-high seven-game home winning streak.

    CUBS 12, MARINERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jon Lester recovered from a rut of bad starts, pitching six shutout innings to help Chicago rout Seattle for its third straight victory.

Jason Heyward and David Ross homered and the NL Central leaders improved to 10-5 since a 1-9 slump.

Seattle lost in its first trip to Wrigley Field since 2007. The Mariners let infielder Luis Sardinas pitch the eighth, and he threw a perfect inning.

Lester (11-4) had lasted just 16 innings over his previous four starts, going 1-1 with a 10.13 ERA. That skid came after he had gone 9-3 with a 2.03 ERA in his first 16 starts. Lester gave up four hits, struck out seven and walked two. He was already done when there was a 74-minute rain delay in the seventh.

Chicago's Kris Bryant reached base all five times he came up. He singled twice, doubled and walked twice. Hisashi Iwakuma (11-7) was the loser.

    CARDINALS 11, MARLINS 6

MIAMI (AP) - Tommy Pham homered and drove in three runs in St. Louis' victory over Miami.

Kolten Wong had three hits and drove in two runs and Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a two-run homer for St. Louis. The Cardinals have won four of five and lead the Marlins by a game in the NL wild-card standings.

Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki went 0 for 4 to remain at 2,998 career hits.

Martin Prado homered and drove in three runs, and Marcell Ozuna also homered for the Marlins.

Mike Leake (8-8) was the winner. Jose Urena (1-3) took the loss.

    BLUE JAYS 6, ORIOLES 5

TORONTO (AP) - Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Troy Tulowitzki hit solo home runs in the first inning, Marco Estrada snapped a four-start winless streak and Toronto beat Baltimore.

Encarnacion reached base three times and scored twice to help the Blue Jays win the opener of a three-game series between the top two teams in the AL East, cutting Baltimore's division lead to a half-game. The Orioles have lost four straight.

Estrada (6-4) allowed four runs, three earned, and five hits in six innings.

Joaquin Benoit worked the seventh, Jason Grilli gave up Manny Machado's solo home run in the eighth and Roberto Osuna finished for his 22nd save.

Mark Trumbo's two-out double gave Baltimore a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but the Blue Jays answered with a trio of solo shots in the bottom half against Kevin Gausman (2-8).

    ROCKIES 6, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Tyler Chatwood kept winning on the road, Carlos Gonzalez homered and drove in four runs and Colorado beat New York for its fourth straight victory.

Mark Reynolds also homered for the surging Rockies. They are 11-4 since the All-Star break and have moved within four games of Miami for the second NL wild-card spot.

Chatwood (10-6) improved to 6-0 with a 1.30 ERA away from Coors Field this season. The 26-year-old is 4-6 with a 5.69 ERA at home.

Gonzalez matched a season-high hitting streak of 11 games with an RBI double in the first. He hit a 448-foot, three-run drive in the ninth for his 21st homer.

Steven Matz (8-7) was the loser.

    RANGERS 8, ROYALS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor homered twice, and A.J. Griffin pitched into the sixth inning in Texas' victory over Kansas City.

Jurickson Profar also went deep for the Rangers, and scored three runs.

Odor hit a solo homer in the first that put AL West-leading Texas up 3-0 against Edinson Volquez (8-9). That 443-foot drive into the second deck of seats in right field came a night after Odor's 465-footer that is the longest in his career. He had another solo shot in the seventh, his 21st of the season barely clearing the 8-foot wall in right.

Griffin (4-1) struck out one and walked two in 5 2-3 innings.

Eric Hosmer homered for the defending World Series champion Royals. They dropped 10 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central.

    BREWERS 3, PIRATES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Junior Guerra limited Pittsburgh to four hits over 8 2/3 innings, and Chris Carter hit a two-run home run in Milwaukee's victory.

The Pirates managed Andrew McCutchen's RBI groundout off Guerra (7-2), who departed with two on and two outs in the ninth. Jeremy Jeffress got Jung Ho Kang to ground out to third on one pitch to record his 25th save in 26 chances.

Guerra's scoreless streak was snapped at 20 innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Pirates rookie Steven Brault (0-1) gave up three runs and seven hits over six innings.

    INDIANS 5, ATHLETICS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Abraham Almonte scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in Cleveland's four-run seventh inning in the Indians' comeback victory over Oakland.

Cleveland erased a 3-1 deficit after being held to four hits through six innings. Jason Kipnis' bases-loaded single tied it, and Almonte scored from third on Ryan Dull's wild pitch one batter later.

Carlos Santana homered in the sixth for Cleveland.

Cody Anderson (2-4) pitched a scoreless seventh. Cody Allen worked out of ninth-inning trouble for 20th save. Kendall Graveman (7-7) was the loser.

Josh Reddick and Khris Davis hit back-to-back homers in the sixth for Oakland.

    TIGERS 14, ASTROS 6

DETROIT (AP) - Tyler Collins and Justin Upton each hit a three-run homer, helping Detroit beat Houston for its fourth straight victory.

James McCann added a solo shot in the eighth and Cameron Maybin had three hits and scored three times. Jose Altuve and Jake Marisnek homered for Houston. The Astros lost for the third time in four games.

Matt Boyd (2-2) allowed three runs on four hits in five innings. He walked one while striking out six. Collin McHugh (7-7) didn't make it out of the second inning.

    RAYS 5, YANKEES 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Jake Odorizzi pitched masterfully into the seventh inning, Logan Forsythe and Corey Dickerson hit solo homers in the first, and Tampa Bay Rays cooled off New York.

The Yankees had won eight of 11 to close within 3 1/2 games of Boston for the second AL wild card.

Odorizzi (5-5) struck out five and allowed six hits over 6 2/3 innings. Alex Colome entered with two on and one out in the ninth, and got two straight outs for his 23rd save.

Ivan Nova (7-6) gave up five runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

    TWINS 2, WHITE SOX 1, 12 INNINGS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Joe Mauer drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift Minnesota over Chicago.

Dan Jennings (4-3) hit Eddie Rosario with a full-count pitch to lead off the 12th. One out later, Byron Buxton walked. Reliever Tommy Kahnle then came on and walked Brian Dozier and Mauer to push across the winning run. Trevor May (2-2) pitched a perfect 12th.

Adam Eaton put the White Sox on the board early when he led off the game with a long home run to right-center field. After that, however, only one White Sox runner reached second base against Nolasco.

Kennys Vargas drove in a run with a blooper to short right field in the sixth. However, Miguel Sano, who had doubled, ran through a stop sign at third base and Eaton's throw easily beat him to the plate.

    BRAVES 2, PHILLIES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Tyrell Jenkins earned his first career victory, pitching six innings and helping the Atlanta beat Philadelphia.

Jenkins, acquired in the November 2014 trade that sent Jason Heyward to St. Louis, began the game with a 6.43 ERA and 26 baserunners allowed in his first three career starts, a span of 14 innings.

Jenkins (1-2) did a lot better against the Phillies, allowing one unearned run on four hits and four walks. He struck out four.

Jim Johnson, the fourth Atlanta pitcher, earned his fifth save in eight chances. Vince Velasquez (8-3) gave up seven hits, two runs, two walks and struck out five in six innings.

    NATIONALS 4, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Washington Nationals turned the first triple play in their 12-season history, holding on in the eighth inning to help preserve a strong outing by Max Scherzer.

The Giants loaded the bases in the eighth with two walks sandwiched around a single. Brandon Crawford then lined an 0-1 pitch from Sammy Solis to first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who had entered the game moments earlier as a defensive replacement.

Zimmerman quickly stepped on first base for the second out then threw to third baseman Anthony Rendon to catch Denard Span to complete the triple play. The Nationals didn't get to keep the ball from their milestone play, however. Rendon casually flipped it into the stands after the play.

Scherzer (11-6) had lost four of his five career starts against the Giants and a no-decision in Game 4 of the 2012 World Series before holding San Francisco to one run over seven innings.

All of Washington's runs came off Giants starter Jeff Samardzija (9-7).

    DODGERS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 7

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Yasmani Grandal's RBI single capped a five-run, seventh-inning rally that carried Los Angeles to a wild win.

Joc Pederson and Chase Utley each hit two-run home runs in the deciding rally as the Dodgers erased a 7-3 deficit and improved to 17-9 since June 26.

Three batters after Corey Seager doubled against Zac Curtis (0-1), Grandal hit a 2-1 pitch from Randall Delgado into center field, scoring Seager from third with the tiebreaking run.

Los Angeles pulled one game behind the division-leading Giants, the closest the Dodgers have been to first place since May 15.

Los Angeles sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, a half-inning after the Diamondbacks sent 11 men to the plate and scored seven runs.

Paul Goldschmidt capped a three-hit night with a bases-loaded double off Pedro Baez (3-2) that finished off the Diamondbacks' rally.

    Reds 6, Padres 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Eugenio Suarez tied a career-high with four RBIs and Brandon Finnegan pitched six scoreless innings as Cincinnati beat San Diego.

Suarez had a run-scoring double and single to pace the Reds to their third victory in four games as the Padres were blanked for 12th time this season, tops in the majors.

Michael Lorenzen and Blake Wood worked the final three innings to preserve the shutout.

San Diego, which grounded into four double plays, also had its 25-game home run streak snapped that tied the National League record set by the 1998 Braves.

Finnegan (6-8) scattered four hits and sidestepped a few early jams before settling in. He walked three, but he struck out five in recording his third win in his last four decisions.

San Diego's Edwin Jackson (1-1) gave up six runs and 10 hits in five innings.

    • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

      — Padres traded two of their starting pitchers (Cashner/Rea) to the Marlins in a 7-player deal.

      — Kirk Cousins scored twice as many fantasy points as Andrew Luck last year.

      — There have been 707 triple plays in the big leagues, but last night was the first 3-3-5 one.

      — Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson both missed the cut at the PGA.

      — Patriots won their last seven games with the Colts, scoring 40.7 ppg- they scored 31+ in all seven.

      — Most interesting college football team this year? Illinois, with Lovie Smith at the helm. He’s never been a college coach.

      **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here

      13) Giants had bases loaded, no outs in bottom of 8th last night; Brandon Crawford hits a line shot right at the first baseman, who touches first, then throws to third for a 3-3-5 triple play, the first one ever in major league baseball.

      12) Also saw a triple play at the Reno-Las Vegas AAA game I went to Sunday night in Vegas; that one was a liner to third with both runners going on the pitch.

      11) I’ve never met John Grisham the author, but he has made several of my trips from Albany to Las Vegas much easier because I read one of his books on the flight. Thursday night was another one– Rogue Lawyer, which I need to finish next week. Mr Grisham has written a ton of books; must be nice to be that skilled a writer. And that rich

      10) On the flight home, somewhere between Denver and Omaha, you could see a thunderstorm below us, off to the right. Had never seen anything like that in an airplane.

      9) There are rumors the Dodgers are trying to trade Yasiel Puig; no way would I trade for Puig– don’t think he likes baseball that much. Plus if you’re trading for a talented guy like him, the price tag is steep.

      8) If I was a major league pitcher, I’d have the biggest glove allowed by the rules, like the one Luis Polonia wore when he patrolled LF for the A’s. #1, the big glove would help protect me on balls hit back thru the middle, #2 it would look weird to the hitter and maybe distract him. Someone should try this.

      7) Sonny Gray is pitching for the A’s Sunday which is bad news for Rich Hill’s blister– his inability to start is holding up any potentials trades of hill out of Oakland.

      6) Heard some folks complaining bitterly about people playing Pokémon the other night. I have no idea what Pokémon actually is, other than some kind of game, but in our world today, anything that makes people happy is OK with me. Not enough people are happy. Happy is good.

      5) Speaking of which, a father/son from California were on my flight home Thursday night; they were going to Cooperstown to see the Hall of Fame, then to the Bronx to watch the Indians play, then to Boston to see Fenway Park. The kid looks like he is 14 or 15– he says he plays shortstop, so he must be pretty good. Was just cool to see a father/son take a trip like that.

      4) Jose Abreu has zero home runs in July. None. Zero. Bupkus. This is not good and does not make me happy. Abreu hit 66 taters his first two years in big leagues, but has only 11 this year.

      3) Eastern League teams Harrisburg-Hartford are playing a series in New Hampshire this week, because Hartford (the Yard Goats, by the way) have n0 home field this year. Attendance for their game the other day: 26, which means they didn’t count players-coaches-umps.

      2) 40 years ago, Hank Aaron was the highest-paid player in baseball; the Brewers paid him $240,000. For the year.

1– Also in 1976, Ted Turner paid $10 million to buy the Atlanta Braves; this year, there are 124 players making $10M+, just for this season. Albert Belle (in 1997) was the first player to make $10M+ for one season.

              • LEADING OFF: Arrieta aims to end skid, Pomeranz bids for 1st
                July 30, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                BOUNCING BACK?

Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta is 0-2 with a 5.55 ERA in four July starts for the Cubs. He has allowed 20 earned runs in his last five outings after giving up 19 over his first 15 starts. Arrieta (12-4, 2.76 ERA) faces the Mariners at Wrigley Field.

                TRY AGAIN

Drew Pomeranz makes another bid for his first win with Boston. The All-Star lefty is 0-1 in two starts since being acquired from San Diego, pitching a total of nine innings and giving up seven runs on 12 hits and four walks. He'll start for the Red Sox on the road vs. the Angels.

                HAPPY TIMES

Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ (13-3, 3.27) has won seven straight decisions going into this start vs. visiting Baltimore.

                LAST CHANCE

Royals righty Ian Kennedy and Rangers lefty Martin Perez have one more chance to get a win in July. The opposing pitchers in Texas are both 0-3 in five starts this month. Perez has allowed 29 runs (22 earned) over his last four starts after going 4-0 in five starts in June. Along with his winless month, Kennedy is 0-2 in three career starts against the Rangers.

                ICHIRO WATCH

Ichiro Suzuki went 0 for 4 Friday night in Miami's loss at home to St. Louis, leaving him at 2,998 career hits. Colin Rea (5-5, 4.98) makes his Marlins debut, a day after they got him in a trade with San Diego.

                • Saturday's Diamond Notes
                  July 30, 2016

                  Hottest team:
Tigers (4-0 last four, 6-2 last eight)
Although the Astros have the top record in MLB (38-18) since May 24, they fell 14-6 on the road to sizzling Detroit, which has pulled a half-game behind them in the tightly-packed AL wild card chase. The resurgent Tigers, who came off a sweep at Fenway Park, set a new season-high for runs scored against Houston pitching, banging out 16 hits, three of them home runs. Justin Upton, Tyler Collins and James McCann went yard, so it's not the usual suspects raking for Detroit. Everyone is getting into the act. Mike Fiers (7-4, 4.69 ERA) has been perhaps the Astros' most consistent starter this season and will square off against Justin Verlander (10-6, 3.64), who has won six of his last seven decisions and is 3-0 with a 1.60 ERA over six July starts, surrendering more than one earned run in a game only once. Verlander beat the Astros 5-3 for his first win of the season back on April 16.

Coldest team: Giants (2-11 last 13)
San Francisco supported its Big Three of Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija with just four total runs over the last three games, wasting solid pitching performances from all of them. The Giants have managed only two runs or fewer in six of the last eight games. With Hunter Pence expected to return on Saturday, Eduardo Nunez coming over from the Twins and Denard Span having returned to the starting lineup on Thursday, the hope is that they now have enough ammo to get back on track. San Francisco will take aim at 22-year-old rookie Reynaldo Lopez (0-1, 11.57), taking the ball for Washington despite giving up six runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings in his major league debut against the Dodgers. He did manage to strike out nine, walking only one. Jake Peavy (5-9, 5.42) makes perhaps his biggest start of the season, looking to snap his first-place team's latest losing streak at three games.

                  Hottest pitcher:
                  Hector Santiago (9-4, 4.28 ERA)
The Red Sox snapped a maddening four-game losing streak that saw them lose the last three by one run apiece, but they remain in third place in the AL East, clinging to the second wild card. They'll now run into one of the hottest pitchers in baseball since Santiago hasn't dropped a decision since June 10, a span of eight straight outings. The Angels have won seven of those games outright and have seen Santiago surrender three runs of fewer in seven of those starts. Included in this run is a 21-2 win at Fenway Park where Santiago allowed one unearned run over six innings on July 2. Teams have been scouting him heavily as a potential trade target, so this could be one last showcase of his abilities against a top contender.

                  Coldest pitcher:
                  Wade Miley (6-8, 5.23 ERA)
It's no surprise to see the Cubs (-240) placed as the heaviest favoirite on the Saturday baseball card. Not only do they send Jake Arrieta to the mound, they'll face Seattle's slumping No. 4 starter in Miley, who hasn't won since June 7. Miley has lost six straight starts despite posting some decent numbers, but the Mariners only managed more than three runs on his behalf only once in those games, scoring one or fewer four times. Miley has given up a home run in five of those games and opponents have hit .286 against him this season. No team has scored more runs than the Cubs against lefties this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (16-1 last 17)
The greatest streak since Orel Hershiser’s consecutive scoreless innings run ended finally fell yesterday as the Orioles finally played a game where the posted total was surpassed. Since the Saturday prior to the All-Star break, Baltimore games had gone UNDER an incredible 16 straight times despite continuing to lead all of MLB in home runs. Sometimes Baltimore’s pitching was lights out and other times, its bats were asleep, which explains a 9-7 mark through the run. The Birds won four straight, then lost four in a row when outscored 19-4, averaging a run per game. The O’s then won five consecutive games before their current skid that reached four games despite them scoring five times, matching their largest output since July 6. Yovani Gallardo (3-2, 5.37) takes the ball for Baltimore and has pitched in four straight UNDER games. Toronto counters with J.A. Happ (13-3, 3.27), who has won seven consecutive decisions and has pitched in shutouts in two of his last three outings. If the Blue Jays win, they’ll grab the lead in the AL East.

                  Biggest OVER run:
Diamondbacks (4-1-1 last six games; 19-9-1 last 29)
There have been at least nine runs scored in six straight games involving Arizona, which squandered a 7-3 lead after stunning L.A. with a seven-run seventh inning on Friday. The Dodgers won 9-7 to pull one game behind the slumping Giants and send Scott Kazmir (9-3, 4.35) to the mound to try and hand the Snakes their 10th loss in 12 games. The Diamondbacks are struggling despite Yasmany Tomas sporting a six-game hitting streak where he's gone 11-for-24 with four homers and 10 RBI. Rookie Braden Shipley (0-1, 10.13) will make his second career start after being lit up at Milwaukee in a 7-2 defeat that represents the lone UNDER in the streak mentioned above. The OVER is just 4-6 in Dodgers/D'Backs games to date.

                  Matchup to watch:
                  Cardinals at Marlins
Since the Mets continue falling apart due to bullpen struggles and a rough stretch at the plate, these teams are in prime position to earn an NL wild card. St. Louis has overtaken Miami by winning the first two of this series in South Florida, scoring 16 runs in beating Jose Fernandez and Jose Urena. Colin Rea (5-5, 4.98), who came over from San Diego with Andrew Cashner in a blockbuster deal that cost the Fish one of their top hitting prospects, will make his debut against lefty Jaime Garcia (7-7, 3.97), who beat him 3-2 on July 20 when he was still the Padres. For added drama, Ichiro Suzuki is stuck on 2,998 hits after going 0-for-4 on Friday and is in a 2-for-14 slump. The OVER has come in four-of-five times in games between these teams thus far this season.

Betcha didn’t know: L.A.'s Kazmir helped his own cause in his last start, drilling a two-run single off rookie Mike Mayers to double his career RBI total. The Dodgers have won in six consecutive Kazmir starts despite the fact he's gotten through seven innings only once. L.A. has averaged 6.9 runs in the victories and his last three outings have all resulted in the OVER cashing.

                  Biggest public favorite:
                  Tigers (-140) vs. Astros

                  Biggest public underdog:
                  Royals (+125) at Rangers

Biggest line move: Pirates (-130 to -155) at Brewers

                  • Mariners place RHP Karns on DL; RHP Martin recalled
                    July 30, 2016

CHICAGO (AP) The Seattle Mariners have placed right-hander Nathan Karns on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain a day after he was roughed up in a relief appearance.

Right-hander Cody Martin was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma before Saturday's game against the Cubs.

Chicago scored five runs in two innings off Karns in Friday's 12-1 romp. He gave up three hits, walked three and allowed a home run to David Ross.

Karns began the season as a starter, but was moved to the bullpen in June. He has a 5.15 ERA.

Martin has appeared in two games and thrown four innings for Seattle this season, allowing one run and five hits.

                    • Padres starters Cashner, Rea to Marlins in 7-player deal
                      July 29, 2016

MIAMI (AP) The Miami Marlins acquired the pitching reinforcements they sought in a trade that cost them four players, including two minor leaguers.

Right-handers Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea were sent to Miami by the San Diego Padres in a seven-player deal Friday.

The Marlins, eager to shore up their rotation for a playoff push, also will receive pitching prospect Tayron Guerrero for right-handers Jarred Cosart and Carter Capps and two minor leaguers, pitching prospect Luis Castillo and first baseman Josh Naylor.

Cashner is 4-7 this year with a 4.76 ERA in 16 starts, and has a career record of 30-49 with a 3.73 ERA in seven seasons. Rea, who is in his second major league season, is 5-5 with a 4.98 ERA in 19 games this year.

Cashner has a $7.15 million contract and becomes a free agent after this season. Rea, 26, has a salary of $510,200 and is under team control through 2018.

The prize in the deal for the Padres might be Naylor, 19, a left-handed power hitter taken by the Marlins in the first round of the 2015 draft. He is batting .269 with nine home runs this year for Single-A Greensboro.

Cosart went 13-11 in 2014 with Houston and Miami but has struggled since. This year, he is 0-1 with a 5.95 ERA in four starts with the Marlins, and 3-4 with a 4.09 ERA in 10 starts for Triple-A New Orleans.

Capps, a hard-throwing reliever, underwent Tommy John surgery in March and is expected to be ready for opening day 2017.

The Marlins are in contention for their first playoff berth since 2003 despite a shaky rotation. Aside from ace Jose Fernandez, their starters are 23-24 with an ERA of 4.40.

Miami's rotation was further depleted last week when left-hander Wei-Yin Chen went on the disabled list because of a sprained elbow. Cashner and Rea will join Fernandez, Tom Koehler and Adam Conley.

The trade is the second between the teams this summer. In June, the Marlins acquired All-Star reliever Fernando Rodney for a minor league pitcher.
