          • LEADING OFF: Sale rejoins Chisox, Gordon returns to Marlins
            July 28, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

            SALE RETURNS TO CHISOX

White Sox ace Chris Sale (14-3, 3.18) returns from a five-day suspension for cutting up Chicago's throwback uniforms prior to a scheduled start last Saturday. He'll try to become the majors' first 15-game winner in the finale of the crosstown series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The lefty will face John Lackey (7-7, 3.79), who has lost five straight decisions - in his last six starts, Lackey has a 6.38 ERA.

            DEE DAY

Dee Gordon, the 2015 NL batting and stolen base champion, returns to the Marlins after serving an 80-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. Gordon signed a $50 million, five-year contract extension in January but was suspended 21 games into this season. Last year, he hit .333 with 58 stolen bases and was awarded the NL Gold Glove Award at second base. Miami will pitch Jose Fernandez (12-4, 2.54) against the Cardinals' Michael Wacha (5-7, 4.37).

            GETTING FAMILIAR

Washington slugger Bryce Harper is stuck in an 0-for-17 rut going into a matchup against Giants ace Johnny Cueto (13-2, 2.53). The NL division leaders open a four-game set in San Francisco and will play each other seven times in 11 days.

            TOUGH ROAD

Coming off a 4-5 stay at Fenway Park, the Red Sox begin an 11-game road trip to the West Coast, visiting the Angels, Seattle and Dodger Stadium. Boston lefty David Price (9-7, 4.51) hopes to rebound from two straight mediocre starts when he pitches at Angel Stadium.

            ICHIRO UPDATE

Ichiro Suzuki is three hits shy of 3,000 as the Marlins open a four-game series vs. St. Louis. He has started just one of six games on Miami's homestand and is batting .332 this season.

            • Thursday's Diamond Notes
              July 28, 2016

Hottest team: Cardinals (7-3 last 10)

St. Louis and New York went back and forth on Wednesday, but the Cardinals got the last laugh by scoring two runs in the ninth inning to edge the Mets, 5-4. The Redbirds grabbed two of three at Citi Field to win their fifth straight game in the favorite role, as St. Louis travels to Miami on Thursday to begin a four-game series. The Cardinals will be flipped to a heavy underdog against Marlins’ ace Jose Fernandez, who is nearly unbeatable at home. St. Louis dropped two of three at home to Miami two weeks ago, but the Cardinals have won six of their past nine games away from Busch Stadium.

Coldest team: Red Sox (1-5 last six)

Boston began its first homestand following the All-Star break with some success by sweeping a two-game series from San Francisco. However, the Red Sox split a four-game series with the last-place Twins, followed by getting swept in a three-game set by Detroit. The final two losses came by one run apiece, as the Sox were swept for the first time this season on Wednesday. The Red Sox venture west to southern California to begin a four-game set with the Angels as David Price is winless in four of his past five starts.

Hottest pitcher: Cole Hamels, Rangers (11-2, 2.87 ERA)

Texas can’t wait for July to end as the AL West leaders own a 7-15 record this month. Three of those victories came when Hamels took the mound as the former World Series MVP has allowed two runs (both unearned) in his last two starts. Hamels has given up one earned run or less in six of his last eight starts with both poor outings coming coincidentally against the Twins (10 earned runs in 8.1 innings). The southpaw faces the Royals for the second time in six days as Hamels tossed 5.1 innings of five-hit ball in a 7-4 triumph at Kansas City last Saturday.

              Coldest pitcher:
Matt Wisler, Braves (4-10, 4.92 ERA)

Atlanta finished off a tough road trip on a good note with consecutive victories at Minnesota. The Braves return home for a four-game series with the Phillies, as Atlanta was swept the last time it faced Philadelphia earlier this month. Wisler has been knocked around recently, allowing six runs in each of his past three starts, while Atlanta has compiled a 1-4 record in his last five outings. Somehow, Wisler’s only win in this stretch came as a +250 road underdog against the White Sox, but pitching at home hasn’t been profitable as Atlanta is 2-9 in the right-hander’s 11 starts at Turner Field.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (15-0 last 15)

Sooner or later, Baltimore has to cash an ‘over.’ But this incredible ‘under’ streak by the Orioles continued in Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat to the Rockies on a 9 total. The oddsmakers keep putting up high totals on Baltimore in spite of this long ‘under’ streak with seven straight games listed at 9 or higher. The Orioles are put in a tough scheduling spot on Thursday by having to travel to Minnesota for a make-up game before a crucial series at Toronto this weekend. The last time the Orioles finished ‘over’ the total came on July 9 against the Angels, as Ubaldo Jimenez started for Baltimore in that 9-5 defeat. Jimenez heads back to the mound on Thursday as eight of his previous nine starts have sailed ‘over’ the total.

Biggest OVER run: Angels (6-2-1 last nine)

Los Angeles returns home following a 2-4 road trip, as the last two games at Kansas City saw a combined 13 and 12 runs scored. The Angels don’t have many pitchers to rely on at this point as Jered Weaver takes his 5.32 ERA to the mound against the Red Sox. Los Angeles has played well at home of late by winning six straight games, while scoring at least seven runs five times on that homestand. The Angels and Red Sox are playing their second series this month as two of the three meetings at Fenway Park finished ‘over’ the total, including L.A. posting a 21-spot in the middle contest of that set.

Matchup to watch: Nationals vs. Giants

These two division leaders are meeting up for the first time this season as they begin a crucial four-game series at AT&T Park. The home team won all seven meetings in 2015, including San Francisco pulling off a four-game sweep of Washington last August. The Giants ended the first half of this season by owning the best record in baseball, but San Francisco has stumbled to a 2-9 record, including dropping two of three at home to Cincinnati. Johnny Cueto is in the mix for the Cy Young award in the National League, as the Giants own a 7-2 record in his nine home starts as he takes the mound on Thursday.

Washington squandered a late lead in Tuesday’s loss at Cleveland, but the Nationals rebounded with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday. The Nationals won the first two games after the break against the Pirates, but Washington has dropped six of its past nine contests. Tanner Roark allowed five earned runs in five innings of a 5-3 setback as a -240 home favorite against the Padres in his last outing. The Washington right-hander has pitched well this season as the Nationals have compiled a 7-2 record in past nine starts.

              Betcha didn’t know:

Chris Sale heads to the hill for the first time since cutting up throwback jerseys prior to his start last Saturday. Sale served a five-day suspension for that stunt as he looks for his 15th win of the season when the White Sox and Cubs wrap up the “Crosstown Cup” at Wrigley Field. The White Sox ace shut down the Cubs in two starts last season, striking out 25 batters in 14 innings and allowing only seven hits and one earned run.

              Biggest public favorite:
              Red Sox (-175) at Angels

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+120) at Cubs

Biggest line move: Orioles (+110 to +100) at Twins

              • Rangers acquire pitchers Harrell, Alvarez from Braves
                July 27, 2016

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) The AL West-leading Texas Rangers have made their first move to get more pitching, acquiring right-handed starter Lucas Harrell and left-handed reliever Dario Alvarez from the Atlanta Braves for an infield prospect.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Wednesday that Texas may not be done shopping for pitching with the non-waiver trading deadline five days away. He said there are still ongoing conversations with other teams but didn't get into details.

''We'll see where they go. I can't really handicap it at this point,'' Daniels said. ''But yes, that's still our focus.''

Harrell is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts for the Braves since they purchased his contract from Triple-A Gwinnett earlier this month. The 31-year-old sinkerballer pitched in Korea last year after appearing in 88 major league games (62 starts) the previous five seasons for the Chicago White Sox (2010-11) and Houston (2011-14), where he worked with current Rangers pitching coach Doug Brocail.

The Rangers sent 2013 first-round pick Travis Demeritte to Atlanta. They needed a starter for Sunday's series finale at home against Kansas City, and Daniels said the plan for now is to start Harrell then.

In his last start for the Braves, Harrell threw six scoreless innings Tuesday night in a win at Minnesota.

Alvarez was 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 16 relief appearances for the Braves, with 28 strikeouts in 15 innings. The left-hander set an Atlanta franchise record by striking out nine consecutive batters over three games earlier this month.

''Looking at both of the pitchers we got, we feel like they can help our club,'' Daniels said. ''They fill roles on the club, they add depth.''

The deal was announced before Wednesday night's game against Oakland, when right-hander Yu Darvish made only his third start for Texas since coming off the disabled list. It was only Darvish's sixth start this season after missing all of last year following Tommy John surgery.

Cole Hamels (11-2), who the Rangers acquired from Philadelphia before the deadline last July, starts Thursday in the series opener against Kansas City.

Two other starters, right-hander Colby Lewis (right lat strain) and lefty Derek Holland (shoulder inflammation) are on the 60-day disabled list and could be back by late August.

The Rangers had one open spot on their 40-man roster and designated Triple-A Round Rock infielder Matt Duffy for assignment to create another spot. They will have to make moves on their 25-man roster when Harrell and Alvarez join the team, which could be as early as Thursday.

Atlanta, with the worst record in the majors, had added Harrell and Alvarez from other organizations within a week of each other in May.

Harrell signed a minor league contract with Detroit on March 1 and was released May 16 before signing a minor league deal with the Braves on May 21. Alvarez began this year in the New York Mets organization before he was designated for assignment on May 23 and sent Atlanta on a waiver claim May 25.

''You look at two guys that weren't even with our system in the middle of May, and now they did well enough that a contending team wants them,'' Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said. ''That says a lot for what they accomplished here.''

The 21-year-old Demeritte was in the All-Star Futures Game in San Diego earlier this month. In 88 games with Class A High Desert, the second baseman batted .272 with 25 home runs, 59 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

                • Manfred: more rule changes needed for pace
                  July 27, 2016

MIAMI (AP) MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred says more rule changes are needed to improve the pace of play, and one proposal under consideration is a limitation on relief pitching changes in an inning or a game.

The majors shaved several minutes off the average game time last season, but games have been slightly longer in 2016.

''We've slipped back a little bit this year, and pace of play is one of those issues where we're going to continually need to evaluate the rules we have,'' Manfred said. ''And we're going to need to continually work with our players to stay focused on the issue.''

Manfred has said he's in favor of a limitation on relief pitchers but didn't lobby for it Wednesday.

''We look at all aspects of the game all the time,'' he said. ''I don't want to put particular emphasis on that one.''

Manfred spoke at the Phillies' game at Marlins Park, where he helped unveil the logo for the 2017 All-Star Game. It will be played next July 11, with the Marlins hosting the game in their 25th season.

''Miami is going to be a great venue,'' Manfred said. ''We had a wonderful experience in San Diego, and I know Miami is going to top that.''

The game in San Diego two weeks ago included a record-breaking effort by the Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton to win the Home Run Derby.

''It was a truly awesome performance,'' Manfred said. ''I was actually there for BP, and for those who didn't get there early, they missed a good part of the show.''

Manfred also praised the Marlins' Ichiro Suzuki, who began the day three hits shy of 3,000.

''For Ichiro to be able to have 3,000 hits in major league baseball after the fantastic and long career he had in Japan is just a tremendous, historic accomplishment,'' Manfred said.
