CHICAGO (AP) Chris Sale returned from his jersey-trashing suspension and threw six effective innings, but John Lackey outpitched him and Aroldis Chapman got the final four outs to save the Cubs' 3-1 victory over the White Sox in Chicago's rivalry series Thursday night.

Sale (14-4) was greeted with smiles and hugs from his teammates following a five-day ban for tearing up 1976-style uniforms he didn't want to wear before his previous scheduled start. He had command issues, but worked out of trouble while allowing two runs and six hits.

Lackey (8-7) allowed one run in six innings for his first win since June 8. Chapman, in his second appearance since being acquired from the Yankees, struck out two and consistently hit 102 mph in his first save for his new team.

Kris Bryant, who homered against Sale in the All-Star Game, hit an RBI double off the center field wall in the first inning. Ben Zobrist added an RBI single in the third and doubled and scored in the eighth as the Cubs earned a split of the four-game series and spoiled Sale's night.

The lefty was scratched from his start Saturday, sent home and then suspended five days for cutting up a number of collared throwback jerseys the team was supposed to wear for the game. Sale said they were uncomfortable and became enraged when the team wouldn't switch them out.

    ANGELS 2, RED SOX 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Hanley Ramirez's throwing error to the plate on Daniel Nava's bases-loaded grounder allowed two runs to score, and Los Angeles walked off with a stunning victory over Boston.

The Angels rallied in the ninth against Boston closer Brad Ziegler (2-5), loading the bases with one out on singles by Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Andrelton Simmons.

Pinch-hitter Nava then poked a potential game-ending grounder to first, but Ramirez put his throw past catcher Sandy Leon, allowing Trout and pinch-runner Ji-Man Choi to end it.

Ziegler, who also lost Wednesday when he gave up a ninth-inning homer by Detroit's Miguel Cabrera, blew his third save of the season.

Cam Bedrosian (2-0) pitched the ninth for Los Angeles.

Ziegler and Ramirez wasted eight innings of seven-hit ball from David Price. The $217 million left-hander outdueled Jered Weaver, who pitched six-hit ball into the sixth inning.

    NATIONALS 4, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Ryan Zimmerman had two hits and scored a run, Trea Turner added two hits and an RBI and Washington beat San Francisco in the opener of a key four-game series between division leaders.

Bryce Harper doubled in a run while Anthony Rendon had two hits to help the Nationals beat All-Star Game starter Johnny Cueto (13-3) in manager Dusty Baker's return to AT&T Park. Baker won 840 games as the Giants manager from 1993-2002.

San Francisco scored a run in the ninth to pull within 4-2 before Shawn Kelley struck out Angel Pagan with the bases loaded to end it and get his fifth save.

The two teams went into the game with identical 59-42 records before Washington won to join the Chicago Cubs (61-40) as the only teams in the majors with at least 60 wins.

Nationals starter Tanner Roark (10-6) allowed one run over seven innings, striking out three and walking three.

    CARDINALS 5, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - Aledmys Diaz homered, doubled and drove in three runs against childhood pal Jose Fernandez, helping St. Louis beat Miami.

Fernandez gave up five runs in five innings and fell to 26-2 at Marlins Park.

Miami's Dee Gordon, the 2015 NL batting and stolen bases champion, returned from an 80-game suspension for failing a drug test and went 0 for 4. Ichiro Suzuki doubled as a pinch hitter in the seventh for Miami and needs two hits for 3,000.

Diaz and Matt Holliday homered in the third inning against Fernandez (12-5), who had never previously given up more than one homer in a home game. His only other loss at Marlins Park came on opening day this year against Detroit.

Michael Wacha (6-7) allowed three runs in six innings, and three relievers completed an eight-hitter. Seung Hwan Oh pitched around a one-out single in the ninth for his seventh save.

Diaz and Fernandez were neighbors growing up in Santa Clara, Cuba, and the Cardinals enjoyed their reunion. Fernandez walked Jeremy Hazelbaker to start the third inning, and Diaz followed with his 14th homer. Two batters later, Holliday hit his 18th homer just inside the right-field foul pole, prompting a rueful grin from Fernandez. The outing was his shortest since May 4.

    ROCKIES 2, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - New York closer Jeurys Familia stumbled for a second straight game, allowing two runs in the ninth inning in a loss that handed Colorado its seventh victory in eight games.

Less than 24 hours after Familia's streak of 52 consecutive regular-season saves was snapped, the right-hander entered in the top of the ninth with a 1-0 lead, and couldn't hold it.

Trevor Story had a leadoff single and stole second. After fellow rookie David Dahl walked, Daniel Descalso bunted up the first base line. Mets catcher Rene Rivera watched as the ball spun toward foul territory but it stopped fair, loading the bases with no out.

With one out, Familia (2-3) got pinch-hitter Cristhian Adames to hit a slow grounder to the right side. First baseman James Loney booted the ball and Story scored to make it 1-all. Familia then threw a wild pitch, allowing Dahl to cross the plate with the go-ahead run.

Jordan Lyles (3-3) pitched a scoreless eighth for the Rockies, and closer Carlos Estevez had a perfect ninth for his 11th save.

    RANGERS 3, ROYALS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Mitch Moreland's second homer of the game broke a tie in the eighth inning and Cole Hamels earned his 12th win of the season in Texas' victory over Kansas City.

Hamels (12-2) allowed two runs and six hits in eight innings, matching his longest start of the season. Sam Dyson earned his 21st save in 23 chances, stranding the tying run at third base.

Both homers by the left-handed hitting Moreland were to the opposite field and came off Yordano Ventura (6-9). It was Moreland's 10th career multi-homer game and second of the season. He has five homers in his last 11 hits.

    TWINS 6, ORIOLES 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Rookie Max Kepler continued his midseason surge with a tying home run and finished with two RBIs to help Minnesota beat Baltimore,

The teams were squeezing in a make-up game from a May 9 postponement with Minnesota in the middle of a homestand and Baltimore heading for a weekend series at Toronto.

Kepler hit his 11th home run off reliever Odrisamer Despaigne (0-2) leading off the sixth inning to tie it at 2 after Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez lasted five innings in his first start since July 8. Kepler had an RBI double in four-run seventh.

Ryan Pressly (5-5) combined with two other relievers to allow just two hits the final three innings.

    PHILLIES 7, BRAVES 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Aaron Altherr and Maikel Franco homered, Aaron Nola won for the first time in eight starts and Philadelphia beat Atlanta.

Altherr returned to the lineup after missing the first 103 games of the season with a broken left wrist. He went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Nola (6-9) gave up eight hits, three runs, three walks and struck out five in five innings. Jeanmar Gomez earned his 27th save.

Braves starter Matt Wisler (4-11) gave up three homers and has allowed eight homers in his past four starts, a span of 20 1/3 innings.

    BREWERS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Hernan Perez hit a two-run homer, singled and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth, Zach Davies pitched 6 1/3 innings and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 on Thursday.

Perez, who started at shortstop for benched Jonathan Villar, crushed the first pitch from Robbie Ray (5-10) 458 feet off the facing of the scoreboard in deep center for the two-run homer in the third.

Davies (8-4) allowed three runs -two earned- on six hits. Jeremy Jeffress pitched the ninth for his 24th save. Milwaukee added a run when Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered off Tyler Clippard leading off the eighth.

      OLYMPICS

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) A half-million foreign tourists, dozens of heads of state and the attention of the world's media. If there were ever a headache for anti-terror forces, it's the Olympics.

In the aftermath of deadly attacks by the Islamic State group in France and elsewhere, Brazil, which has almost no experience combatting terrorism, is beefing up security for the games that start in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 5. Plans include doubling the number of security forces on the streets, erecting more checkpoints and working closer with foreign intelligence agencies than Brazilians did in the 2014 World Cup.

      But will it be enough?

Richard Ford, a retired FBI anti-terror expert who lives in Brazil, said that while the government has a robust program to keep athletes and venues safe, he worries that authorities aren't taking the threat of a lone-wolf or suicide attack seriously enough.

      MOSCOW (AP) -
A depleted Russian team departed for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, missing dozens of athletes who were excluded amid the country's doping scandal.

Team members left on a charter flight from Moscow's Sheremetevo airport to Brazil, a day after an emotional farewell ceremony with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin.

More than 100 athletes from what was originally a 387-strong team have been barred from competing in Rio by international sports federations under sanctions which most Russian athletes consider unfair.

      RIO DE JANEIRO (AP)
      - Sabotage by unhappy workers may have caused water and gas leaks, blocked toilets and electrical faults that slowed teams from moving into the athletes' village, Rio Olympic organizers said.

All 31 buildings at the massive compound for 18,000 athletes and staff were due to be ready at the end of Thursday, with the games opening in just over a week. Andrada says about 400 of the 3,600 rooms in the complex had defects.

South America's first games have been plagued by problems, including the Zika virus, severe water pollution, security worries and slow ticket sales. But the slipshod construction is the first problem directly touching many teams and athletes.

      GOLF

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) - A stale year for Jimmy Walker came to life in the PGA Championship when he saw putts drop and wound up leading a major for the first time in his career.

A great year might get even better for Henrik Stenson.

Walker took advantage of smoother greens in the morning Thursday at Baltusrol by rolling in six birdies for a 5-under 65, giving him a one-shot lead after the opening round of the final major that delivered its share of surprises.

U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson, with a chance to go to No. 1 in the world, was in the trees, in the water and couldn't get out of a bunker. He managed only one birdie in a round of 77 that wasn't enough to beat 15 of the club pros at Baltusrol.

Rory McIlroy took 35 putts and didn't make a single birdie in his round of 74 that left him so frustrated that he returned to Baltusrol late in the day with his putter.

WOBURN, England (AP) - Mirim Lee shot a 10-under 62 to match the Women's British Open record and open a three-stroke lead in the major championship at tree-lined Woburn Golf Club.

Three weeks after shooting a 64 in the first round of the U.S. Women's Open, the 25-year-old South Korean player made the last of her 10 birdies on the par-3 17th and closed with a par.

Lee fell a stroke short of the LPGA Tour major record of 61 set by Hyo Joo Kim in the first round of the 2014 Evian Championship. Minea Blomqvist shot a 62 in the third round of the 2004 Women's British Open at Sunningdale.

Ariya Jutanugarn was second after a bogey-free 65. China's Shanshan Feng had a 66, and American Stacy Lewis and South Korea's Mi Hyang Lee shot 67.

HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) - Stephan Jaeger shot a 12-under 58 in the Web.com Tour's Ellie Mae Classic to match the lowest score in major tour play.

The 27-year-old German player finished with a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-5 ninth at TPC Stonebrae.

Japan's Ryo Ishikawa also shot a 12-under 58 to win the 2010 Crowns on the Tour. Jaeger broke the Web.com Tour record of 59 held by Notah Begay III, Doug Dunakey, Jason Gore, Will Wilcox and Russell Knox. Six players have shot 59 in official PGA Tour events.

      BASEBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - Major League Baseball denied the Los Angeles Angels' formal protest of their loss at Kansas City on Wednesday night.

Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre ruled on the protest Thursday.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia protested Kansas City's 7-5 victory, claiming the Royals' Raul Mondesi ran inside the line on a bunt single in the seventh inning. The play led to a throwing error and two runners scoring, and Scioscia claimed Mondesi was illegally on the grass when pitcher Matt Shoemaker made his errant throw to first.

      SAN FRANCISCO (AP)
      - The San Francisco Giants acquired All-Star infielder Eduardo Nunez from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for a minor league pitcher.

Nunez was batting .296 with 12 home runs and 47 RBIs this season for the Twins and was leading the American League with 27 steals at the time of the trade.

The move adds some much-needed depth to San Francisco's injury-plagued infield.

Second baseman Joe Panik was activated off the disabled list prior to the Giants' game against Washington on Thursday, while third baseman Matt Duffy remains out with a strained left Achilles. Backup infielder Ehire Adrianza has also been sidelined since mid-April with a foot injury.

      COLLEGE FOOTBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - The College Football Playoff has abandoned a plan to play most of its semifinals on New Year's Eves after television ratings tumbled last year, moving the dates of future games to ensure they will be played either on a weekend or a holiday.

The changes will start with the 2018 season. The TV ratings for last year's semifinal games played on Thursday, Dec. 31, dropped 36 percent from the semifinals played the season before on New Year's Day.

This season's semifinals are still set for Saturday, Dec. 31. Next season's playoff is scheduled to be back on Jan. 1. In 2018, the games initially scheduled to be played on New Year's Eve, will now be played Saturday, Dec. 29.

The 2019 games will move to Saturday, Dec. 28.

      NFL

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NBA has announced that the Indiana Pacers and Denver Nuggets will play in London on Jan. 12.

The game will be played at The O2 arena, league officials said. Denver will be considered the home team and tickets will go on sale at the start of the upcoming season.

It is the first time the Pacers have played a regular-season game overseas, though they have played preseason games in China, the Philippines, Taiwan, Germany and Spain.

      • LEADING OFF: Porcello seeks 14th win, Ichiro closing on 3K
        July 29, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

        TRYING TO JOIN ELITE COMPANY

Rick Porcello tries to become the fourth 14-game winner in the majors this season as the Boston Red Sox continue a four-game weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif. Porcello, 13-2 with a 3.57 ERA, trails only Baltimore's Chris Tillman (14-3), and the Chicago White Sox's Chris Sale (14-4) in the American League and Washington's Stephen Strasburg (14-1) in the NL.

        CLOSING IN ON 3,000

Ichiro Suzuki needs just two hits to reach 3,000 for his major league career as the Miami Marlins continue a four-game weekend series against St. Louis. Suzuki, who has started just one of the Marlins' past seven games, doubled as a pinch hitter on Thursday night for hit No. 2,998 to raise his season average to .335.

        NEW ADDITION

Eduardo Nunez could make his San Francisco debut in the second game of the Giants' weekend series against Washington, one day after the All-Star infielder was acquired from Minnesota. Nunez was batting .296 with 12 home runs and 47 RBIs this season for the Twins and was leading the American League with 27 steals. Nunez is expected to play third base while Matt Duffy recovers from a strained left Achilles.

        HEALTHY RETURNS

The Arizona Diamondbacks could have third baseman Jake Lamb and David Peralta back in the lineup when they open a weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lamb missed two games with a bruised left hand before entering Thursday's 6-4 loss to Milwaukee as a pinch hitter in the seventh and staying in the game. Arizona manager Chip Hale said Lamb would start Friday. Peralta, recovering from a lower back strain, is scheduled to rejoin the Diamondbacks from a rehab assignment at Triple-A Reno.

        PERFECT IN MIAMI

Mike Leake will look to remain perfect in Miami when the St. Louis Cardinals continue their four-game series against the Marlins. Leake - 7-8 with a 4.24 ERA this season - is 3-0 with a 0.44 ERA in three career starts at Marlins Park.

        • Friday's Diamond Notes
          July 29, 2016

Hottest team: Tigers (5-2 last seven)
The A’s have won a league-best five of six, but we’ve got them covered below in the hot pitcher category. That allows us to examine the suddenly resurgent Tigers, who come off a sweep at Fenway Park that put them squarely in the AL wild card chase by dragging the Red Sox back to the pack when it looked like they were ready to begin pulling away. We’ll see whether Detroit ends up making a move to fortify multiple holes, but it finds itself in position to really make inroads as it opens a 10-game homestand against the Astros, who arrive in town up 1.5 games. Lefty Matt Boyd picked up his second career win in his last start at Comerica Park, holding the Twins to three hits over six innings in a 1-0 win. He’s been excellent at home over his short career, in sharp contrast to his road numbers. Boyd has a 1.17 ERA thus far in July, but has lost his only matchup against Houston, surrendering a pair of Colby Rasmus home runs.

          Coldest team:
          Giants (2-10 last 12)
Even Johnny Cueto pitching at home couldn't stop the bleeding for the first-place Giants, who continue to lead the NL West and rank among the best teams in baseball record-wise. San Francisco has given up three runs over the last two games and have managed over two runs or fewer in five of the last seven games. Denard Span returned to the starting lineup on Thursday, but the Giants should still struggle against Max Scherzer.

Hottest pitcher: Kendall Graveman (7-6, 4.15 ERA)
Although Oakland is looking to trade ace Sonny Gray and is willing to move anyone if it means getting back a few prospects to brighten an otherwise long season, it will be interesting to see if anyone reaches out for this guy. Graveman hasn't lost a decision since May 19, a span of 10 starts. He's won his last six decisions and is 4-0 in July, compiling a 2.35 ERA. Graveman comes off a complete game victory at home against Tampa Bay and has been a tremendous ground-ball pitcher this month.

Coldest pitcher: Tim Lincecum (2-4, 8.70 ERA)
The Angels rallied to upset the Red Sox on a disgusting error in the bottom of the ninth yesterday, but it will be interesting to see whether the Lincecum experiment yields any more success. Since surrendering one run on four hits in six innings at Oakland in his debut, Lincecum has given up at least three earned runs in every game he's pitched in, lasting more than five innings only once. He'll be facing the best lineup he's seen since returning to the big leagues.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (16-0 last 16)
Despite getting up early at Minnesota, the same result befell Baltimore on the road against the Twins. The Orioles haven't scored more than five runs in any game behind this stretch, which has seen 9-10 posted as their run total on their contests going forward. The Birds dropped their third straight in losing in Minneapolis on Thursday night and hasn't scored six runs since July 6.

Biggest OVER run: Pirates (4-0 last four games)
The Pirates came out of the All-Star break by scoring just three runs over the course of a three-game set against the Nationals and then opened the Phillies series by getting blanked. Since that 4-0 loss, the Bucs have averaged 6.5 runs in winning three of four, putting up a 10-spot in Wednesday's rout of Seattle. Andrew McCutchen is having a down year, but picked up his first three-hit since the All-Star break (only his sixth of 2016), driving in four runs and hitting his first homer since action resumed. If Pittsburgh can get him going, it can get back in a wild card race that is currently getting away. Rookie lefty Steven Brault, who made his debut on July 5 with a no-decision in a 5-2 win over the Cardinals, will make his first road start at Milwaukee.

Matchup to watch: Cardinals at Marlins
The Cardinals handed Jose Fernandez only his second loss in 28 decisions at home, dominating via the long ball and taking care of defense defensively. As a result, St. Louis has now caught the Marlins at 55-47 with 60 games remaining, currently two games behind the Dodgers for the top NL wild card and right there with Miami for the second, 1.5 games up on the slumping Mets and two ahead of Pittsburgh. Tonight's game pits young Miami pitcher Jose Urena against Mike Leake in a contest that the Marlins are slightly favored in.

Betcha didn’t know: Veteran Edwin Jackson (1-1, 4.30), considered a can't-miss superstar at one time, is pitching for his 11th different franchise after being cut from the Marlins earlier this season and catching on with the Padres earlier this month. He's actually faring better than anyone could have expected, putting together consecutive starts of six innings or more while allowing two earned runs or fewer for the first time since July of 2013. Jackson flirted with a no-hitter in his San Diego debut, so he'll look to impress the home crowd again as he matches up with the Reds, one of the few teams he hasn't played for. For whatever it's worth, Jackson told MLB.com he feels he's still in his "prime" with a "lot to offer."

Biggest public favorite: Phillies (-150) at Braves

Biggest public underdog: Giants (+135) at Nationals

Biggest line move: Astros (-104 to -125) at Tigers

          • Giants acquire All-Star infielder Eduardo Nunez from Twins
            July 29, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The San Francisco Giants acquired All-Star infielder Eduardo Nunez from the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night in exchange for a minor league pitcher.

''Just to have a guy that has his experience, has served in that role in the past and done well and is off to a good start this season, we just feel like he can help us cover the tracks as we get 100 percent healthy and get Duffy and Panik back,'' Giants general manager Bobby Evans said. ''It allows us to have the ability to still give them some rest even down the stretch as we enter these last couple of months.''

Nunez, a career .275 hitter, is likely to play third base until Duffy - who could possibly begin a rehab assignment this weekend - returns. Nunez started 28 games there this season for the Twins while also splitting time at shortstop.

''The Twins are a great organization and made me feel like at home,'' Nunez said after Minnesota's 6-2 win against Baltimore. ''But at the end of the day, it's business, baseball. You go wherever is best for you and the team. The Giants want me and I'm going to go there and do my best.''

He also looked forward to going from a team mired in last place in the AL Central to a Giants team leading the NL West.

''Any player wants to be in the playoffs,'' Nunez said. ''I have the opportunity to go a new team that is in the playoff race. It's fun to be there.''

Evans was adamant that the Giants aren't planning to replace Duffy with Nunez. The Giants second-year general manager said he spoke with Duffy and assured him his spot in the lineup is secure.

''We'll have to follow some return-to-play plan with Matt, that may be an extra day off or two off a week when he first gets back which will give Nunez a chance to play then,'' Evans said. ''Otherwise it'll be as we would use any utility infield help. As we look at the rest of the season we just want to have the protection of his experience given the time that these guys have missed and the time they may need to have off as we get down the stretch.''

San Francisco sent minor league pitcher Adalberto Mejia to the Twins in exchange for Nunez.

''We think he's fairly close to the big leagues and he's got a three-pitch mix to start,'' Twins interim general manager Ron Antony said. ''He's got a big, durable body. So we just think he profiles well. He was pretty much what we were looking for.''

            • Gordon rejoins Marlins following 80-game suspension
              July 28, 2016

MIAMI (AP) Dee Gordon walked into the Miami Marlins clubhouse four hours before game time and was greeted at his locker by a three-foot-high stack of boxes - bats, gloves, shoes and more, all new.

''Three months of stuff,'' he said.

That's how long he had been gone. Gordon returned Thursday from an 80-game suspension for a positive drug test and went 0 for 4 batting leadoff as the Marlins lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4.

In conjunction with his reinstatement, Gordon issued an apology on social media addressed primarily to his young fans.

''I know I let you down, and I'm sorry,'' the Marlins' second baseman said in a video. ''Complacency led me to this, and I'm hurt. I urge you guys to be more responsible than I am about what goes into your body. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.''

Gordon, who won the NL batting and stolen base titles last year, was suspended in late April after testing positive for two performance-enhancing drugs.

At the time, Marlins president David Samson said Gordon had betrayed the team and fans. Now, Samson and the Marlins say they're glad to have Gordon back.

''We're a pretty forgiving society,'' Samson said. ''It's important Dee ask for that forgiveness, and he has, and he'll receive that. He's got to continue to work to get himself back in with his teammates and the fans, and my son.''

Teammates - even Derek Dietrich, who filled in capably at second base - have said they're glad to have Gordon return. Manager Don Mattingly said Gordon has the backing of the clubhouse and organization.

''Obviously there was disappointment early on, and then you really want to support him from that point forward,'' Mattingly said. ''He has been remorseful. He has paid his price.''

Gordon's father, former major league pitcher Tom Gordon, attended Thursday's game. The elder Gordon said he both scolded and embraced his son when the suspension occurred.

''He has learned a lot,'' Tom Gordon said. ''He will bounce back and be an even better person.''

In his video, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound Gordon said he learned from his mistake.

''I thought being the smallest guy, I would never fail a drug test,'' he said. ''I didn't pay attention at all and I didn't meet the standards. That's my fault and no one else's. But don't give up on me.''

When Gordon was suspended, he said he unknowingly took the banned substances. Speaking to a cluster of media in the dugout before batting practice Thursday, he declined to elaborate.

              What lesson did he learn?

''Don't be complacent just because you're small,'' he said. ''I got complacent and made a mistake.''

Gordon's hitless effort Thursday dropped his season average to .255.

''I thought he seemed a little quiet and probably a little nervous,'' Mattingly said. ''As the game went on he seemed more like himself.''

To make room on the roster for Gordon, the Marlins designated for assignment infielder Don Kelly, who had two triples in Wednesday's victory over the Phillies.

Even without Gordon, the Marlins have remained in contention for their first playoff berth since 2003.

''I kept in touch with my teammates pretty much on a daily basis,'' Gordon said. ''I told them thank you for keeping their end of the bargain. I asked them to keep it close until I got back, and that's exactly what they did. Now I've got to keep my end of the bargain. I've got to help us get to the playoffs.''

As part of his punishment, Gordon will be ineligible for the postseason.

Last year he led the majors with 205 hits and 58 stolen bases, batted .333, became an All-Star for the second time and won a Gold Glove.

The breakout season earned him a $50 million, five-year contract in January. Is he optimistic he'll play the way he did last year?

''I know I can,'' he said. ''Wait and watch.''
