  • NHL roundup: Simmonds' 2 goals lead Flyers to win
    December 5, 2016

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Wayne Simmonds' two goals and Steve Mason's 30 saves lifted Philadelphia to a 4-2 win Sunday over the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena, the Flyers' fifth straight victory.

Both of Simmonds' markers came on the power play, giving him six with the man advantage this season.

Chris VandeVelde and Michael Raffl also scored for the Flyers.

Calle Jarnkrok and Colin Wilson scored for the Predators.

    Canadiens 5, Kings 4 (SO)

LOS ANGELES -- Max Pacioretty scored two goals and an assist and Alexander Radulov registered a goal and two assists as Montreal defeated Los Angeles in a shootout.

Paul Byron scored the decisive goal in the fourth round of the shootout and Andrew Shaw also scored the Canadiens in regulation.

Trevor Lewis, Drew Doughty, Nick Shore and Jeff Carter scored for the Kings.

Red Wings 4, Islanders 3 (OT)

NEW YORK -- Danny DeKeyser scored 1:02 into overtime Sunday night as Detroit edged New York at Barclays Center.

Mike Green scored twice -- and had a third goal, a potential go-ahead tally in the third period, overturned due to goalie interference on teammate Luke Glendening -- and Henrik Zetterberg added a goal for the Red Wings. Petr Mrazek made 32 saves.

Anders Lee, Johnny Boychuk and Josh Bailey scored for the Islanders, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Jaroslav Halak recorded 31 saves.

    Hurricanes 1, Lightning 0 (OT)

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Phillip Di Giuseppe's first goal of the season gave Carolina an overtime victory against Tampa Bay at PNC Arena.

With teammate Viktor Stalberg creating a distraction in front of the net, Di Giuseppe delivered a shot from the right side that beat Tampa Bay's Ben Bishop 1:29 into the extra period. The left winger was in only his fourth game since being recalled from the minor leagues. Bishop, playing for the third time in four days, finished with 29 saves.

Cam Ward, who hadn't played in two of the team's previous four games, picked up the shutout with 30 saves as the Hurricanes extended their home-ice winning streak to six games.

    Jets 2, Blackhawks 1

CHICAGO -- Andrew Copp scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period, and Winnipeg held on for a win over Chicago.

Bryan Little also scored for the Jets, who earned their second road win in as many nights.

Artemi Panarin scored the Blackhawks lone goal as their offense continued to struggle without injured captain Jonathan Toews.

    Wild 2, Oilers 1 (OT)

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Mikko Koivu scored the winner at 3:11 of overtime, giving Minnesota a victory over Edmonton.

Koivu busted into the Oilers zone, danced around goalie Jonas Gustavsson and deposited a backhanded effort.

Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk, who played 171 games as an Oiler, made 28 saves to earn the win.

    Flames 8, Ducks 3

CALGARY, Alberta -- Johnny Gaudreau had a goal and an assist in his return to action as Calgary trounced Anaheim at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Playing left wing on a line with center Sam Bennett and right winger Alex Chiasson, Gaudreau scored on his opening shift after missing the past 10 games with a fractured finger.

Bennett and Chiasson finished with a goal and two assists each to give the line eight points.

    • Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday…….

Broncos 20, Jaguars 10— Jaguars have now lost seven games in a row; QB Bortles threw his 11th career pick-6 in this game- he has 10 career wins. Jags are -16 in turnovers their last eight games. First career win for rookie QB Paxton Lynch. AFC South underdogs are 7-13 vs spread, 2-6 at home.

Chiefs 29, Falcons 28— Eric Berry scored 8 points; he had a pick-6 in last 1:00 of first half when score was tied, then scored game-winning two points on a pick-2 in 4th quarter, after Falcons had taken a 28-27 lead. Atlanta also gave up a TD on a 55-yard fake punt. Over is 10-2 in Falcon games this season. Not a good day at all for the Atlanta coaches.

Packers 21, Texas 13— You say Texans should struggle in cold weather, being a dome team and all, but QB Osweiler grew up in Montana; shouldn’t he be used to it? Houston is 1-5 on road, 1-4 as road underdogs, losing away games by 27-18-18-7-8 points- its not the cold, they’re just bad on the road.

Bengals 32, Eagles 14— Philly has now lost seven of last nine games after its 3-0 start; Eagles lost last six road games, are 1-4 as road underdogs this year, losing away games by 1-7-6-5-11-18 points.

As far as rookie QB’s go, here are some W-L records of rookie QB’s:
John Elway 4-6, Troy Aikman 0-11, Eli Manning 1-6, Peyton Manning 3-13, Dan Marino 7-2. Oddly enough, Marino is only one of those five who never won a Super Bowl.

Lions 28, Saints 13— Didn’t see Sean Payton celebrating much on the sidelines today. Detroit is now 8-4, atop NFC North; this was first game all year they didn’t trail in 4th quarter. Lions are 4-1 as road underdogs this year. Last six Detroit games stayed under total.

Bears 26, 49ers 6— On a snowy day in Windy City, 49ers completed 5 of 15 passes for a net of six yards. Bears had six sacks in a game where neither side completed a pass in first quarter, but Chicago wound up 11-18/184 passing. Under is 4-1-1 in Chicago home games.

Patriots 26, Rams 10— My three favorite football movies:
      1) Any Given Sunday 2) Invincible 3) Friday Night Lights

Some Christmas trivia: the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York City is 94 feet tall and weighs over 30,000 pounds.

It is accurate to say that Sunday afternoon wasn’t a happy one in my living room.

Ravens 38, Dolphins 6— Miami’s 6-game win streak was put to an emphatic end- this game was 24-0 at half; Ravens have won four of last five games- they’ve allowed 11.4 pts/game in last five home games.

Raiders 38, Bills 24— Buffalo led 24-9 halfway thru third quarter but got outscored 29-0 from that point on. On their last six drives, Oakland ran 34 plays for 230 yards and four TD’s, with two short TD drives of 38-16 yards. Over is 10-2 in Raider games this season.

Buffalo was -2 in turnovers; teams that were -2 or worse in turnovers are 7-64 in the NFL this season.

Buccaneers 28, Chargers 21— Tampa Bay has won four straight road games for first time ever; they’re 5-1 on road this year, NFC South non-divisional road underdogs are 12-2 vs spread this season, 9-1 on road.

Bucs are tied with Atlanta atop NFC South and would be the #2 Wild Card now; as for San Diego, sounds like they’re moving to the new stadium in LA, which opens in 2019. They need to draft a QB in April, someone who will be in place as a starter when they try to sell tickets in their new location.

Cardinals 31, Redskins 23— Washington’s loss drops them out of the playoff picture, for now; they’re half-game behind the Wild Cards. Arizona was 10-16 on third down, and didn’t turn the ball over; they had turned it over nine times in previous four games. Over is 10-2 in Redskin games this season.

Steelers 24, Giants 14— Pittsburgh won its third straight game, allowing total of 30 points- they’re 4-1 as home favorites this year. Giants had 6-game win streak snapped, in game where Victor Cruz had zero targets. Under is 7-2 in Giants’ last nine games.

Seahawks 40, Panthers 7– Carolina benched QB Cam Newton for first series of this game, a HUGE red flag; chances are it was for more than one offense. First series lasted one play, an INT on a tipped ball, and game went downhill from there. Your QB is one of the team’s leaders, for better or worse- this isn’t a good sign.

                December 6, 2016

BOSTON (AP) David Pastrnak scored his second goal of the game 2:23 into overtime and the Boston Bruins continued their recent success against the Florida Panthers with a 4-3 victory on Monday night.

Pastrnak got his team-leading 15th goal by cutting in from the left wing, shifting around goaltender Roberto Luongo and tucking in the game-winner.

David Backes and Tim Schaller also scored for the Bruins, who are 15-2-1 in their last 18 games against the Panthers. Tuukka Rask stopped 27 shots to raise his record to 14-4-1 this season and 17-3-1 in his career against Florida.

Jaromir Jagr had a goal for the Panthers, the 754th of his career, and Luongo finished with 32 saves.

Florida's Jason Demers slipped a shot under Rask, tying it with 1:29 to play, after the Bruins had moved ahead when Backes tipped in Ryan Spooner's shot for the go-ahead goal with 6:52 remaining.

Aleksander Barkov also scored for the Panthers.

                CAPITALS 3, SABRES 2, OT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Marcus Johansson scored the tying goal late in the third period and got the winner midway through overtime to lift Washington past Buffalo.

The goals were Johansson's third and fourth in his last five games. He has 11 for the season.

Jay Beagle added the Capitals' first even-strength goal in three games, as Washington snapped a three-game losing skid. Braden Holtby made 31 saves in the victory, the Capitals second over the Sabres in an 11-day stretch.

Kyle Okposo scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season to give the Sabres the lead in the second period. Zemgus Girgensons also scored early for Buffalo, and Robin Lehner made 30 stops for the visitors.

                BLUE JACKETS 4, COYOTES 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Sam Gagner had two goals and two assists to help Columbus beat Arizona for the second time in three days.

Nick Foligno and Zach Werensky also scored for the Blue Jackets, who won for the fourth straight time and ninth of their last 12. Columbus picked up its 500th win in franchise history in sweeping the two-game season series with the Coyotes.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 17 shots for Columbus.

Arizona backup goaltender Louis Domingue had 30 saves, two days after the Blue Jackets hammered starter Mike Smith with a franchise-record 60 shots in a 3-2 shootout victory in Phoenix.

Arizona struck first 9:28 into the game when Alex Goligoski fed a pass on a power play to Tobias Reider, who slammed it past Bobrovsky's glove side from between the circles.

                PENGUINS 8, SENATORS 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bryan Rust had his first career hat trick, Sidney Crosby added his NHL-leading 17th goal and Pittsburgh raced past Ottawa.

Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel each had a goal and two assists for the Penguins, and Matt Cullen and Justin Schultz also scored. Pittsburgh scored six times over the final 32 minutes after spotting the Senators a 4-2 lead.

Matt Murray made 17 saves after coming in for an ineffective Marc-Andre Fleury in the second period.

Pittsburgh has won three straight overall and improved to 7-0-2 in its last nine against the Senators.

Matt Stone had a goal and two assists for Ottawa. Erik Karlsson, Mike Hoffman, Mark Stone and Dion Phaneuf also scored for as the Senators lost in regulation for just the second time in its last eight games.

                • Tuesday’s six-pack

                  Baseball signings:

                  — Astros gave Carlos Beltran $16M for one year; they’ve got a really good lineup but who is going to pitch for them?

                  — Giants signed closer Mark Melancon for four years, $62M.

                  — Toronto signed utility guy Steve Pearce for $6M or so a year.

                  — Rich Hill got $48M for three years from the Dodgers

                  — UConn 52, Syracuse 50— No wins are ugly, but this was not a well-played game.

                  — St John’s 76, Cal-Northridge 70– Chris Mullein’s Red Storm is 26-46 from the arc in their last two games.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

                  13) No one seems to know the whole story but it is difficult to fathom that Cam Newton was suspended for the first series of a game just because he didn’t have a tie on when he was supposed to— there almost has to be more to the story than that, as in the QB challenging the coach’s authority (more than once), and Sunday night, the coach showed who was boss in a very public way.

                  12) If you care about such things, so far this season, NBA teams playing the second night of a back/back are 39-46 vs spread when facing a team that didn’t play the night before.

                  11) Until Donald Trump gets sworn into office, the three wealthiest Presidents were: 1) George Washington 2) John Kennedy 3) Andrew Jackson.

                  10) Seattle Seahawks had 25 undrafted players on their roster Sunday night and only two #1 draft picks- next week it’ll probably be 26 undrafted players, with safety Earl Thomas done for the year with a broken leg.

                  9) Average clubhead speed for a PGA touring pro golfer: 109 mph. Average clubhead speed for an amateur golfer: 81 mph

                  8) You could have a bought a ticket to the Colts-Jets game Monday night for as little as $6 online. Parking probably cost five times that.

                  7) In 1972, Lafayette College had a freshman QB who was pretty good, but quit football to concentrate on his baseball career. You may have heard of him; Joe Maddon, now the world champion Cubs’ manager.

                  6) Players in the All-Star Game will be playing the game for $20,000 per man to the winning side, zero to the losing side. Will that be enough to make all of ‘em stick around to the end?

                  5) Eastern Washington’s basketball team is 6-2 with five straight wins; three of their last four wins came in overtime, with two of those three in double OT.

                  4) Purdue hired Western Kentucky football coach Jeff Brohm, who favors a wide-open offense. Purdue is a tough place to win in football; maybe he should’ve waited for a better job (Oregon)?

                  3) This is what college basketball was like before the shot clock; on December 22, 1969, Pete Maravich was 30-31 from the foul line. In one game. With no shot clock, great ball handlers dominated the game as soon as their team got the lead in the second half.

There was a Duke-North Carolina game a few years before the shot clock came in that was 7-0 at halftime. A basketball game was 7-0 at halftime. No bueno.

                  2) Letting quarterbacks sit and watch ain’t all bad; in his rookie year in the NFL, Tom Brady threw three passes. Three.

1— Two quick Los Angeles Ram notes:

                  a) When Case Keenum was QB this season, they converted 37.6% of their third down plays, not bad; in three games with Jared Goff under center, LA is 5-35 (14.3%) on third down. Of course, it would be nice if Goff’s receivers would catch the ball now and then; his first INT in Foxboro was a perfect pass that hit Lance Kendricks right in the hands but was tipped to a Patriot defender.

                  b) Rams’ senior executive Kevin Demoff is the son of agent Marvin Demoff. One of Marvin Demoff’s clients is Jeff Fisher. Oy.
