WASHINGTON (AP) Nicklas Backstrom had two goals and three assists and T.J. Oshie enjoyed a four-point game as the Washington Capitals broke out of a recent funk to rout the rival Pittsburgh Penguins 7-1 on Wednesday night.

Oshie had two goals and two assists, and Alex Ovechkin, Dmitry Orlov and Justin Williams also scored for the Capitals, who had lost three of four. Braden Holtby stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced, allowing only a late goal to Phil Kessel.

The Penguins lost Stanley Cup-winning goalie Matt Murray late in the first period when teammate Evgeni Malkin accidentally hit him in the head. Murray allowed two goals on 14 shots before leaving, and Marc-Andre Fleury gave up five goals on 25 shots in relief.

          FLAMES 2, COYOTES 1, OT

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Michael Frolik scored 49 seconds into overtime to lift Calgary past Arizona.

Frolik stole the puck from Brad Richardson after a faceoff in the Flames' end and skated in at top speed and ripped a shot inside the post on Coyotes goalie Mike Smith.

Matthew Tkachuk scored in regulation for Calgary, which snapped a three-game home skid. Chad Johnson started for the second straight night and finished with 20 saves.

Tobias Rieder scored for Arizona and Smith stopped 22 shots.

                  • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

NFL trends with Week 11 on the way…….

                    — Saints are 10-4 vs spread in their last 14 games.

                    — Chicago is 3-11 vs spread in its last 14 games.

                    — Browns are 6-16-1 in their last 23 games as an underdog.

                    — Cowboys won/covered their last eight games.

                    — New England is 32-11 coming off a loss.

                    — Colts are 9-2 coming off a bye.

                    **********

                    Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: NFL’s top 9, bottom 4 teams……

                    32) Browns— Hurting Steelers come to Lake Erie this week needing a win. Chances are they will get it. Cleveland was outscored 60-8 in second half of its last three games.

                    31) 49ers— They’ve lost eight games in a row (1-7 vs spread); now Tom Brady is coming back near his hometown this week, so very little shot that New England will let down. Not good.

                    30) Jaguars— Offensive coordinator they fired few weeks ago is rumored to be candidate to be the new coach at Purdue. Jacksonville is -12 in turnovers the last five games.

                    29) Bears— Read few different national writers Monday speculating that Jay Cutler’s days in the Windy City may be numbered. Usually when there is speculation, someone has tipped off the person doing the speculating.

                    9) Dolphins— Won/covered last four games, picked Rivers off four times, just in 4th quarter last Sunday. Interesting game in the Coliseum this week, against the Rams in Jared Goff’s NFL debut.

                    8) Giants— Six wins by total of 21 points; they’re finding ways to win close games, just like they found ways to lose close games the last three years.

                    7) Chiefs— They’re 18-3 in their last 21 games, but they’ve also scored only one offensive TD in their last two games.

                    6) Broncos— 3-3 in last six games after a 4-0 start; if the defense doesn’t force turnovers, they are going to struggle.

                    5) Falcons— Bye week comes after their worst offensive game of the year. At 6-3, Atlanta is in good shape to return to the playoffs for first time in four years.

                    4) Seahawks— Wilson looked more nimble in Foxboro last week; if he is mobile, then Seahawks are very good.

                    3) Raiders— Haven’t been in the playoffs since 2002, when they lost the Super Bowl to the Bucs, but right now, they’re as good as anyone.

                    2) Patriots— Still think they’re the best team, but if Gronkowski is out for any length of time, then no.

                    1) Cowboys— Not often an NFL QB holds a news conference to say his former backup deserves to be the starter. Thats how well Dak Prescott is playing this season- he might be the MVP if the season ended today.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Mikael Granlund scored with 44.5 seconds left, Devan Dubnyk stopped 25 shots for his league-leading fourth shutout, and the Minnesota Wild beat the Boston Bruins 1-0 Thursday night.

Granlund took a pass from Jonas Brodin circled below the end line and came out to the right of Tuukka Rask. His centering pass went off the skate of Adam McQuoid and trickled into the Boston net.

Dubnyk has had to carry the Wild lately as Minnesota's offense has mustered just 10 goals in its past seven games, winning three. He has allowed nine goals in his last nine games, stopping 274 of 283 shots in that span to account for a .965 save percentage.

Minnesota has allowed an NHL-low 29 total goals in 16 games this season, including 10 in its last nine games, dating back to the 5-0 shutout Oct. 25 in Boston.

                            LIGHTNING 4, SABRES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Alex Killorn had a goal and assist and Tampa Bay won its first game without captain Steven Stamkos.

Nikita Kucherov, Nikita Nesterov and Brayden Point also scored, and Valtteri Filppula set up two goals with no-look passes in helping the Lightning win their third straight and improve to 6-2-1 in their past nine. The spread-out offensive contributions came in Tampa Bay's first game since Stamkos tore a ligament in his right knee during a 4-3 win at Detroit on Tuesday.

During the game at Buffalo, the Lightning announced Stamkos had surgery and is expected to miss four months.

Cody Franson scored for Buffalo, which dropped to 0-4-2 in its past six. It's a stretch in which the team's offense has dried up in managing just six goals.

                            DUCKS 3, DEVILS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ryan Kesler scored the tiebreaking goal on a rush to the net with 3:40 to play, and Anaheim snapped New Jersey's five-game winning streak.

Rickard Rakell and Jakob Silfverberg scored 16 seconds apart in the second period for the Ducks, who maintained their Pacific Division lead with their fifth victory in six games.

Anaheim struggled in the third period until Silfverberg controlled the puck behind the net and centered it to Kesler, who stormed into the slot and forced home his team-leading eighth goal.

Kyle Quincey had a goal and an assist for the Devils, who had been on their longest streak since February 2013. Devante Smith-Pelly also scored against his former team for the Devils.

Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves for the Ducks, who have won the first two on a five-game homestand.

                            CANUCKS 3, COYOTES 2, OT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Ben Hutton scored on a penalty shot at 2:34 of overtime to lift Vancouver.

Daniel Sedin had a goal and an assist, and Brandon Sutter also scored for Vancouver, which had lost 11 of 13. Jacob Markstrom made 34 saves.

Hutton was hooked on a breakaway by Dylan Strome before beating Louis Domingue with a nice backhand deke for his second goal of the season.

Brad Richardson and Anthony DeAngelo had goals for Arizona, which has lost four straight. Richardson was later carted off on a stretcher with an injured right leg in the second period and taken to a hospital. Domingue finished with 39 saves.

                            BLUES 3, SHARKS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jaden Schwartz scored twice and David Perron added the game-winner to lift St. Louis past San Jose.

Jake Allen had 29 saves - holding off the Sharks' 6-on-4 advantage over the final 55 seconds - as the Blues won their second straight.

Kevin Labanc got his first NHL goal and Logan Couture also scored for the Sharks, who lost their second straight after winning the first three on a season-high six-game trip.

Perron broke a 2-2 tie with a power-play tally late in the second period. San Jose had killed off its previous 26 penalties over an 11-game stretch.

                            STARS 3, AVALANCHE 2

DALLAS (AP) - Patrick Eaves capped Dallas' three-goal first period and the Stars held off Colorado.

Johnny Oduya and Brett Ritchie also scored in the first for Dallas, and Kari Lehtonen finished with 34 saves.

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and an assist and Mikhail Grigorenko also scored for the Avalanche, who nearly rallied after trailing 3-0 after the first. Semyon Varlamov stopped 19 shots and snapped an 11-game winning streak against the Stars.

Lehtonen stopped MacKinnon on a breakaway midway through the second period and again on a rebound with 10 minutes left in the game.

                            KINGS 4, OILERS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jeff Carter scored the tiebreaking short-handed goal midway through the second period to lead Los Angeles.

Derek Forbort had a goal and an assist and Devin Setoguchi and Tyler Toffoli also scored for the Kings. Peter Budaj made 26 saves.

Darnell Nurse and Oscar Klefbom scored for the Oilers,, who have now lost five straight games to fall to 2-7-1 since starting 7-1-0. Jonas Gustavsson made 21 saves.

Trailing 2-0 after the first period, the Oilers scored twice in the second to tie it before Carter scored at 9:06 of the middle period.

                            FLYERS 5, JETS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Raffl and Sean Couturier scored 34 seconds apart in the first period on Philadelphia's initial two shots, and the Flyers went on to beat Winnipeg.

Mark Streit, Wayne Simmonds and Brandon Manning also scored for the Flyers, who had 12 players register points.

Blake Wheeler and Dustin Byfuglien had the goals for the Jets, who opened a season-high five-game, nine-day road trip with just their second loss in the last six.

Couturier got Philadelphia on the board 9:13 in when he capitalized on a Winnipeg turnover and beat Connor Hellebuyck high to the glove side from close range. Raffl doubled the lead just over a half-minute later with his third of the season.

Steve Mason made 30 saves to improve to 6-0-1 in his career against Winnipeg.

                            Hellebuyck stopped 17 shots.

                            PREDATORS 5, SENATORS 1

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Ryan Ellis scored the tiebreaking goal late in the first period and Pekka Rinne stopped 30 shots to lead Nashville.

Derrick Brassard scored for Ottawa, and Mike Condon finished with 35 saves in his third start. The Senators haven't scored more than two goals in their last 11 games.

Ellis beat Condon on the far side with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the opening period to put the Predators up 2-1.

                            MAPLE LEAFS 6, PANTHERS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Connor Brown had two goals and two assists to lead help spoiling James Reimer's first start in Toronto since leaving the Maple Leafs in the offseason.

Mitch Marner had another impressive goal, and Leo Komarov, James van Riemsdyk and Jake Gardiner also scored as Toronto improved to 7-2-0 at home. Nazem Kadri had two assists and Frederik Andersen stopped 27 shots.

                              — Panthers 23, Saints 20— New Orleans had a FG blocked which resulted in a 10-point swing. No bueno.

                              — UConn 65, LMU 62— Huskies narrowly avoid an 0-3 start.

                              — Xavier 83, Missouri 82 OT— Tigers lost but are way better than they’ve been last few years.

                              — Arkansas State 78, Georgetown 72— Tough week for the Hoyas.

                              — Astros gave Josh Reddick $52M for four years, also traded for Brian McCann. Neither one of those two guys pitches.

—Houston 36, Louisville 10– Cougars just play better when they’re an underdog- they lost 38-16 at SMU. How?

                              **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: What I’m looking for this weekend

                              13) Jared Goff makes his NFL debut against Miami Sunday; Dolphins won/covered their last four games, so this’ll be an interesting challenge for the #1 pick in the draft.

If I’m calling plays, we let him chuck one deep on first play, just to send a message to defensive coordinators- the kid has a gun.

                              12) Big weekend in LA, with USC-UCLA in Rose Bowl Saturday; last nine of these rivalry games were decided by 10+ points. Bruins won three of last four meetings, but USC is the hot team right now.

                              11) Green Bay is in free fall, losing last three games while allowing 111 points- they were down 35-10 in 2nd quarter in Nashville LW. Redskins are 5-1-1 in last seven games after an 0-2 start- interesting Sunday night game.

                              10) Xavier-Clemson is an excellent college hoop game at 1:30 today from down in Orlando. This was supposed to be the Puerto Rico tournament but was moved to the Disney Wide World of Sports, due to concerns about the Zika virus.

Other semi-final in Orlando is Northern Iowa-Oklahoma.

                              9) Stanford beat California the last six years; Golden Bears’ defense has apparently gone on strike- they’ve been terrible last three weeks, but this is a bitter rivalry.

                              8) Detroit Lions are a 7-point favorite over Jacksonville; all nine Lions games have been decided by 7 or less points. Detroit has trailed in 4th quarter of every game.

                              7) As payment for being allowed to play ACC basketball, Notre Dame has to play so many ACC teams in football every year. This week is their first meeting with Virginia Tech; should be a fun game.

                              6) In its last three games, Tennessee averaged 12.2/7.3/9.8 yards/pass attempt- they’ve averaged 32 pts/game in their last six games, but Titans are 4-23 against the Colts, losing last eight visits here.

                              5) Underdogs won all three Duke-Pittsburgh games SU and two of them were wild shootouts (51-48/55-52). Panthers pulled a huge upset at Clemson last week; now they’re favored to win.

                              4) Minnesota is 5-4 after starting season 5-0; now Cardinals come limping into the Twin Cities at 4-4-1, in a pivotal game for both sides. That first round pick the Vikings dealt for San Bradford is beginning to look like it might’ve been too much.

                              3) West Virginia is a home underdog despite having only one loss this season; Oklahoma’s defense isn’t so good, but Sooners have won seven games in row, with only three of those at home.

                              2) Washington State-Colorado is the under-the-radar game of the week; both teams are vastly improved the last couple of years— this could be a preview of the Pac-12 title game.

                              1) Oakland-Houston play in Mexico City Monday night, where I’m guessing the locals weren’t too excited about our elections last week. Wonder if the 7-2 Raiders are regretting giving up a home game, now that they’re contenders?
