DETROIT (AP) Aleksander Barkov scored on a breakaway 2:04 into overtime, lifting Florida to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night and giving interim coach Tom Rowe his first victory with the Panthers.

Florida, playing its second game with Rowe, had lost its last two games. Detroit was 3-0-1 after losing four straight and nine of 11.

The Red Wings went ahead 1:23 into the game when Henrik Zetterberg scored on their first shot, ending a six-game drought. But they struggled on offense the rest of the night.

Florida's Vincent Trocheck had a goal negated late in the opening period when Detroit coach Jeff Blashill challenged that Panthers defenseman Jason Demers was offside. Demers made up for it by scoring with 1:45 left in the first, pulling the Panthers into a tie on a shot that was redirected off Detroit defenseman Danny DeKeyser.

            BLUES 5, LIGHTNING 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Vladimir Tarasenko scored three goals and Kevin Shattenkirk added two as St. Louis earned its third straight win.

The Blues have won six straight at home. Jake Allen made 22 saves while improving to 12-3-3.

Tampa Bay lost its season-high fourth consecutive game.

Tarasenko, who leads the team with 13 goals, recorded his fourth career hat trick. He scored twice in the game's opening 9:37 to stake his team to a 2-0 lead.

Cedric Paquette scored twice for the Lightning, who have been outscored 19-9 during their four-game skid. Nikita Kucherov and Tyler Johnson also scored.

            SABRES 4, RANGERS 3

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jack Eichel scored two goals in the third period, and the Sabres earned their second straight victory.

Buffalo's winning streak coincides with the return of Eichel, who missed the first 21 games with a high ankle sprain. The 20-year-old center had a goal and an assist in Buffalo's 5-4 win in Ottawa on Tuesday and has recorded a point in seven straight games dating to last season.

Johan Larsson and Brian Gionta also scored for Buffalo. Anders Nilsson made 22 saves while subbing for starting goaltender Robin Lehner, who is day to day with a hip injury.

Ryan McDonagh, Rick Nash and Marc Staal scored for the Rangers, and Henrik Lundqvist made 30 saves.

            PENGUINS 6, STARS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists, leading the Penguins to the win.

Crosby scored his league-leading 16th goal in the second period and assisted on Conor Sheary's sixth as Pittsburgh scored three goals in the final 4 minutes. Eric Fehr's third of the season was the 100th of his career and Patric Hornqvist's seventh came on the power play.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 33 saves for Pittsburgh. Fleury, who won for the first time in five starts, has six wins in his last nine home games.

Tyler Seguin and Devin Shore scored for Dallas. Antti Niemi, playing in his 400th career game, stopped 34 shots.

The Stars have lost three straight and seven of their last 10.

            BLACKHAWKS 4, DEVILS 3, OT

CHICAGO (AP) - Marian Hossa scored his team-leading 12th goal through a screen at 1:31 of overtime, lifting the Blackhawks to the win.

Hossa's shot through traffic from high in the slot beat Cory Schneider on the glove side, moments after New Jersey's Mike Cammalleri hit the post on a prime chance against Corey Crawford.

Travis Zajac had three goals for New Jersey, including the tying score at 8:49 of the third. Schneider made 29 stops in the Devils' fourth straight loss.

Artem Anisimov, Niklas Hjalmarsson and Marcus Kruger scored in the second period for Western Conference-leading Chicago, which has won two in a row and three of four overall. Crawford finished with 30 saves.

            BLUE JACKETS 3, AVALANCHE 2

DENVER (AP) - Boone Jenner scored the winning goal with 11:03 remaining, Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 18 shots and the Blue Jackets beat the slumping Avalanche.

Jenner knocked in his third goal of the season on a no-look pass from Cam Atkinson after a turnover deep in Colorado's end. Brandon Saad and Nick Foligno staked the Blue Jackets to a 2-0 lead with first-period goals.

Blake Comeau scored in the second period and Samuel Henley followed with his first NHL goal as the Avalanche rallied. Comeau nearly tied the game with 2:09 remaining when he tipped in a shot. But the officials reviewed the play and waved off the goal after ruling he knocked it in with a high stick.

The Avalanche dropped to 0-3-1 on their current homestand.

            KINGS 4, COYOTES 3

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Trevor Lewis scored off a turnover with 4:05 left and Los Angeles held on for the win.

Jordan Nolan scored his first two goals of the season for the Kings, and Anze Kopitar added two assists to help Los Angeles win for the sixth time in seven games. Jeff Zatkoff made 25 saves.

Martin Hanzal scored twice for the Coyotes in the first period. Mike Smith had 29 saves, but gave up two goals in the final seven minutes.

The Coyotes pulled Smith for an extra attacker for the last 1:34, but couldn't draw even.

            ISLANDERS 3, CAPITALS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Shane Prince, Brock Nelson and Jason Chimera produced three goals in less than 4 1/2 minutes of the third period, leading the Islanders to their first three-game winning streak of the season.

Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak made 38 saves for his first shutout of the season and 40th of his NHL career.

New York entered with the fewest points in the Eastern Conference, including just one victory in eight road games, and was playing the second half of a back-to-back, while Washington was coming off a four-day break.

But Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals went 0 for 6 on the power play, making that once-vaunted unit 0 for 10 over the team's past two games, both losses.

            BRUINS 2, HURRICANES 1, SO

BOSTON (AP) - Ryan Spooner and David Pastrnak scored in a shootout, lifting Boston to the win.

Jeff Skinner's bid to extend the shootout fell short when he was stopped by Bruins goalie Anton Khudobin. Skinner also was turned away by Khudobin on a breakaway in the closing seconds of overtime.

Khudobin pumped his fists after earning his first win of the season.

Torey Krug scored in the third period for Boston, and Khudobin finished with 29 saves. Pastrnak made a pair of dekes and slipped the puck past Cam Ward for the winning goal.

Jacob Slavin scored in the shootout for Carolina, which lost for the fourth time in five games. Ward made 34 saves.

            FLYERS 3, SENATORS 2, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Claude Giroux scored his second goal of the game 40 seconds into overtime, sending Philadelphia to the road win.

Michael Del Zotto also scored, and Steve Mason made 19 saves. The Flyers have won three in a row to improve to 12-10-3.

Mike Hoffman and Ryan Dzingel scored for Ottawa, and Mike Condon made 29 saves. The Senators dropped to 14-8-2.

            OILERS 6, JETS 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Mark Letestu and Leon Draisaitl each had two goals and an assist, powering Edmonton to the victory.

The Oilers went 3 for 4 on the power play, including Letestu's goals. Patrick Maroon and Benoit Pouliot also scored, and Connor McDavid had three assists.

Jets rookie Patrik Laine had two power-play goals to lift his overall season total to 15, a goal behind Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby for the NHL lead. Bryan Little also scored for Winnipeg.

Cam Talbot made 21 saves for his 12th win of the season. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 23 of the 29 shots he faced before Michael Hutchinson came in to make four saves in just over 12 minutes of relief.

              • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

                Week 13 NFL football trends…….

                — Jaguars are 10-24-1 in their last 35 games as a home dog.

                — 49ers covered twice in their last ten games.

                — Oakland covered one in its last nine home games.

                — Carolina is 17-8-1 in its last 26 games as a road underdog.

                — Falcons covered three of last 15 games as a home favorite.

                — Arizona covered three times in its last 12 games.

                **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts with the weekend here…….

                13) Cowboys 17, Vikings 15— Minnesota is 6-6 after starting season 5-0; they scored TD with 0:25 left, but failed on 2-point conversion and lost again. Dallas has now won 11 games in a row but if you bet the Cowboys (-3) this was a discouraging bad beat.

                12) Rockets 132, Warriors 127— Excellent NBA game. Golden State’s 12-game win streak ends as both teams take 44 3-pointers. Fun to watch teams pass and shoot and COMPETE.

                11) Couple interesting parts of baseball’s new labor agreement:

15-day disabled list is now the 10-day disabled list.
World Series team with best record gets home field edge in Series, instead of the winner of the All-Star Game, which goes back to being a meaningless exhibition, as it should be.

                10) NFL referee Gene Steratore worked the Indiana-North Carolina hoop game Wednesday; Bill Vinovich is also an NFL ref who works big time college hoop games. .

                9) Philadelphia 76ers raised Joel Embiid’s minutes limit from 24:00 to 28:00 per game, a good sign for the young man who has been injury prone for most of his career.

                8) A further sign of the softening of our society; Indiana parted ways with football coach Kevin Wilson (they said he “resigned” which means, “we fired him but he’s doing a good job so we’ll let him say he quit.”) Wilson was 26-47 at Indiana, but 12-13 the last two years, as Hoosiers were becoming a more competitive team.

Apparently Wilson was occasionally stern with his players, maybe forcefully stern, and some of them objected to the AD. I’ll guarantee you, on any 85-person football team, you can find five people who don’t like the coach. If the AD listens to those five, the coach better win a lot.

                7) Sunday the Rams play in Foxboro; Jared Goff obviously is 0-2 as an NFL starter. In his head coaching career, Bill Belichick is 21-1 in games against a starting QB with zero career wins.

The lone loss? Andre Ware and the Lions beat Belichick’s Cleveland Browns 24-14 in 1992.

                6) Indiana and North Carolina both have five national titles in college basketball. Hoosiers have been in Final Four eight times, but UNC has been there 19 times.

                5) On Showtime’s reality show about Florida State football, FSU coaches approached the rivalry game with Florida by telling players “it is about history, about those players who came before you here.” It is an effective approach that works with current players.

The reality is this: these rivalry games are about RECRUITING. Signing Day is only four or five weeks away- these rivalry games can turn a key recruit or two in your favor. It is about future players, future wins, future job security. That is the reality of it.

                4) Lonzo Ball is a freshman PG at UCLA, a very, very good player; ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt and Jay Bilas were discussing this Monday night and agreed that Ball reminds them of Jason Kidd at the same age, a huge compliment.

Ball’s brother plays at Chino Hills HS in California; the kid scored 72 points in a recent game, a game his team won 128-108. Who coaches these teams that a 32:00 HS game winds up with a 128-108 final score?

If you’re the losing coach and your team is good enough to score 108 points, then chances are you have a couple players capable of playing defense. You’d think.

                3) Best NFL teams in turnover margin this year: Chiefs +14, Vikings +13, Raiders +10

Worst teams in turnover margin: Jaguars -15, Jets -13, Browns/Texans -9

                2) NFL teams with most 20+-yard plays this season: Falcons 56, Redskins 55.

Teams with the least 20+-yard plays: Texans 28, Panthers 31

                1) Clippers lost in double OT to the Nets Tuesday; Doc Rivers wound up getting tossed at the end of this game, because he was barking at female ref Lauren Holtkamp (who is not good) and another ref stepped in and T’d Rivers up, which enraged the Clippers’ coach.

On the first possession of this game, 0:12 into the game, a Nets player had the ball at the top of the key, dribbled twice, picked up his dribble, looked to pass, couldn’t find anyone, so he dribbled again and nothing was called. Nothing. Bupkus. A 5th-grade CYO ref would’ve called the double dribble, it was that obvious.

Say what you want; college refs are better than NBA refs.

                  • Preview: Wild (11-8) at Flames (11-13)
                    Date: December 02, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

CALGARY, Alberta -- The Minnesota Wild were great in October but fell to slightly below average in November and begin December in Alberta trying to turn things around.

The Wild surrendered a lead for the third time in six games Tuesday in Vancouver, prompting frustrated head coach Bruce Boudreau to cancel a day off on Wednesday in Calgary and replace it with a 70-minute practice.

"We have to be better, that's it," right wing Jason Pominville said after the 5-4 loss to the Canucks. "Obviously, we are disappointed. We're not happy with the result we got. We have to take a couple of days here, get some rest, get some practice and get back to work."

After starting the season with a 6-2-1 October, the Wild slid to a 5-6-2 November, and they begin shopping for pre-Christmas victories Friday against the surging Calgary Flames.

"We'll regroup," Boudreau said. "We have two days before our next game and two practices before our next game. We'll see where we stand."

Wednesday's practice focused mostly on how to avoid odd-man rushes, which was a big part of the Vancouver game. Boudreau called out the line of Zach Parise, Eric Staal and Charlie Coyle for their misdeeds, and Parise took ownership when he stood in front of media in Calgary.

"We didn't support each other very much up the ice, turned the puck over a lot in the offensive zone," he told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "It was just one of those games. We couldn't get much going. It happens."

Boudreau spoke to that line about doing better.

"They're good players and they're all professional and they're going to get back on track. We'd like to see, and we haven't seen it too often, that all the lines are going at the same time. ... They're good players. It's a good team. We'll find out way again Friday," he said.

Coyle offered this after Thursday's practice: "We've got to be ready to come out right away and get to our game fast."

While the Wild were trying to sort through their problems while awaiting Friday's game, the Flames were continuing to ride the hot goaltending of Chad Johnson, who stopped 39 shots to blank the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-0 Wednesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Johnson was brought to Calgary to back up Brian Elliott, but he has taken over the No. 1 role by going 6-2-0 with three shutouts and a 1.50 goals-against-average in his last eight starts. He became the first Flames goaltender to record three shutouts in one month since Fred Braithwaite did it in December 1999.

The Flames returned home after playing six games in nine nights and going 3-2-1. They are now 11-13-2 and within sight of .500 thanks to Johnson.

"He was fantastic," Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan said. "We were a tired hockey club. (The Leafs) are in there back-to-back, I understand that, but six in nine nights and coming back home from New York, we were a tired club. I loved our start and then when you get a goaltending performance that Johnny gives us, it gives you a chance."

The Flames begun the Johnny Gaudreau watch in earnest recently. The star winger returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since breaking a finger on a slash from Staal in Minnesota on Nov. 15. The Flames said then he'd be out four to six weeks and he's now in his third week of recovery.

                    Calgary are 5-3-1 without Gaudreau.

"We said when Johnny was injured that this was a chance for us to solidify and come together and have other guys step up and solidify a good defensive base," Gulutzan said.

"Do we get away from that at times, certainly we do. But,

                    • Preview: Canadiens (16-5) at Sharks (14-9)
                      Date: December 02, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

California has not proven to a be a preferred getaway destination for the Montreal Canadiens in recent years, especially when they visit the "Shark Tank."

The Canadiens look to end a long winless streak in The Golden State and earn their first win at the SAP Center in more than 17 years when they face the San Jose Sharks on Friday night in a matchup of division leaders.

Montreal, which sits atop the Atlantic, has gone 0-6-2 in Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Jose since topping the Ducks in a shootout on March 5, 2014. Also, after its last win on Nov. 23, 1999, Montreal is 0-7-2 in San Jose, having been outscored 37-17 and blanked three times.

The Canadiens have allowed 11 power-play goals in 35 chances to the Sharks following their last northern California win.

"I guess it's time for a change," defenseman Shea Weber told the Montreal Gazette.

Over the first 15 games this season, the Canadiens were conjuring up images of dominant teams that would go on to lift the Stanley Cup 24 times.

Montreal charged out to a 13-1-1 start, scoring at least three goals in all but two games. Five players -- Weber, Alex Galchenyuk, Alexander Radulov, Max Pacioretty, and Paul Byron -- combined for 23 goals and 40 assists, with Galchenyuk and Weber each scoring six goals. Byron, who's never had more than 11 in a season, chipped in with five.

Over their last eight contests, the offense has dried up as Montreal has gone 3-4-1 and been held to two goals or less six times. The five players who powered the Habs' offense early on have totaled 10 goals and 12 assists since their hot starts.

The lack of offense was evident again Tuesday night when the Canadiens opened the California portion of their five-game road trip. Andrew Shaw helped Montreal avoid its second shutout of the season by scoring with two minutes to play in a 2-1 loss to the Ducks. It was also the Habs' sixth straight game decided by one goal.

"We have to figure out a way to score," coach Michel Therrien told the Montreal Gazette. "We had 40 shots ... and we had some quality scoring chances, but we couldn't put the puck in the net."

San Jose (14-9-1) enters play with a three-point lead over Anaheim and the Edmonton Oilers in the Pacific, and returns home looking for its sixth win in seven games after defeating Los Angeles 4-1 on Wednesday behind two goals and an assist from Logan Couture.

Couture has been red-hot over the last six games with five goals and two assists. Brent Burns also has seven points over that span, including three goals. Both players are tied for the team lead with nine goals while Burns and Joe Pavelski each have a team-best 21 points.

Couture has scored 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in seven career games against the Canadiens. In four home games versus Montreal, Couture has two goals and five assists to help the Sharks go 4-0-0.

Barring injury or anything unforeseen, the game will feature two of the NHL's top goalies in Montreal's Carey Price and San Jose's Martin Jones.

Price, who stopped 36 shots against Anaheim, is expected to make his sixth straight start, and he told the Canadiens' official website what the team needs to do to end their San Jose skid.

"If we have puck support and we keep moving out feet, we make it difficult on teams. That's kind of our forte. We have to get back to that," he said.

Price is 13-2-1 with a 1.68 goals-against average, .947 save percentage and two shutouts. He's 0-3-1 over four career starts in San Jose with a GAA just under 4.

Jones is 12-8-1 with a 2.04 GAA, with a .921 save percentage and he also has two shutouts in 2016-17. He's faced Montreal four times in his career with San Jose and Los Angeles, recording a 3-1-0 record with a 2.25 GAA, .911 save percentage and one shutout.

"He's always been comfortable. He's always been calm. He's elite. He's a pretty experienced guy. He's always been good," Burns said of Jones.

With December here, some college hoop knowledge……

                              13) ACC is currently ranked #1 in conference strength; last time they finished a season #1 was ten years ago. Last time they finished #2 was 2010.

                              12) Virginia Tech hasn’t made the NCAAs since 2007; they’re currently #32, with wins over Nebraska-Michigan. Buzz Williams has the Hokies headed towards the NCAA’s.

                              11) Eight of ten Big East teams are ranked in top 60; St John’s/DePaul are dragging the league’s rating down. It is amazing to me that schools in NYC/Chicago aren’t good and haven’t been good for a decent amount of time.

                              10) Teams who play the fastest tempo:
                              1) Citadel 3) BYU 5) Washington 6) Cal-Northridge

Teams who play the slowest tempo:
                              351) Virginia 350) St Mary’s 349) Wisconsin 348) Charleston

                              9) Teams making highest %age of 3-pointers:
                              Creighton 46.5%, UCLA 45.6%, Air Force 43.7%

                              8) Big West is getting pounded like a piƱata this fall; their teams are 24-41 SU, 16-34 vs spread. Their conference rank has slipped from 13th to 21st- who is their best team? Hard to tell.

                              7) Big X ranked #1 the last three years; they’re ranked #2 right now. Texas at 4-3 has hurt the league so far- they’ve made only 26.2% of their 3’s, are playing pace #217. What happened to the entertaining, pressing style that Shaka Smart’s teams played at VCU?

                              6) St Mary’s hasn’t made NCAAs since 2013; last four years they made it, they went a combined 51-9 in conference play. Gaels are 6-0 this year with wins at Dayton/Stanford, they’ve got a great start towards making the NCAAs, with an experienced roster.

                              5) Last four years, Sun Belt was ranked 20-20-20-18th; they’re up to #14 this year. Tex-Arlington and Georgia State could have a great conference tournament final, with the one NCAA slot on the line. Those are two good teams that can win a game or two in March.

                              4) Iowa finished the last four years in the top 30; they’re #75 now with no wins against any team ranked above #318. Hawkeyes went 3-7 in their last ten games LY with the #55 experience team. Now that they’re inexperienced, it could be a long winter.

                              3) UCLA is off to a great start but they’re last in bench minutes, so they can’t afford injuries- their schedule is ranked #271. Bruins are playing at Kentucky Saturday- they’ve finished lower than 40th in five of last six years, but this year looks like it’ll be a big jump up for UCLA.

                              2) Teams that’ve played the hardest schedule, thru Thursday’s games:
                              1) Long Beach State 5) Michigan State 8) Cal-Riverside 10) Northern Iowa

                              1) Teams that’ve played the easiest schedules, thru Thursday’s games:
                              351) East Carolina 350) Miami OH 349) Memphis 347) Hawai’i 346) UNLV
