        • Hickey scores in OT, Islanders beat Flames 2-1
          November 28, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) The New York Islanders have found their footing in Brooklyn once again, and the road-weary Calgary Flames don't feel too bad about Monday night's result, either.

Thomas Hickey scored 1:53 into overtime, helping the Islanders rebound from a vexing West Coast trip with a 2-1 win over the Flames.

Hickey won it after Flames forward Michael Frolik broke a stick in the defensive end, leading to an awkward line change for Calgary. Islanders captain John Tavares wheeled around the zone with the Flames momentarily short-handed before backhanding a shot that Hickey tipped off goalie Brian Elliott and in.

"I was glad to get a stick on it in overtime," Hickey said. "This was a game we had to have."

New York improved to 3-1-0 in home games following a road loss by relieving frustration from a wild swing through California. They beat Anaheim in a 14-round shootout but then lost twice on goals in the final 3 minutes of regulation against Los Angeles and San Jose.

Last-place New York is just 1-6-1 on the road but remains respectable in Brooklyn, improving to 6-4-3 at Barclays Center.

Tavares also scored in the first period and has six goals and 11 assists this season. The goal was his first in 10 games.

"I have a lot of expectations," Tavares said. "I have to make plays and produce. And lead by example."

Thomas Greiss stopped 25 shots for the Islanders, standing tall during a barrage late in the second period before allowing Sean Monahan's tying goal 5:51 into the third. Monahan scored on a one-timer from the left circle.

Elliott was mostly solid with 25 saves but still lost his seventh straight start. He was acquired from St. Louis over the summer to be Calgary's primary goalie but had sat three straight games in favor of journeyman Chad Johnson.

Elliott had a few pivotal saves late, including when he stopped Shane Prince on a breakaway midway through the third.

"The guy works so hard and cares so much," Flames captain Mark Giordano said. "So for him to have a big night for us and come and bounce back and play that well was nice to see."

          Monahan's goal helped Calgary complete a grueling six-game, nine-day trip 3-2-1.

"I think anytime you're over .500 on a long one it's successful," Giordano said, adding, "I think we can build off of getting a point there."

The Flames fought fatigue in a 5-2 loss to the Flyers on Sunday and didn't show much life early in this one, either. Both teams flailed at the start, with each getting one shot on goal in the first 5 minutes. Calgary finished with just four shots in the first period.

Josh Bailey and Tavares teamed up for a 1-0 lead 7:28 in. Bailey rushed into the middle of the zone, turned left in the high slot, and then delivered a no-look, backhand pass for Tavares, who shot over Elliott's shoulder from the right side.

The goal started a strong stretch by New York, and the Islanders had a few near misses later in the first, including a shot off the post from Cal Clutterbuck with about six minutes left.

Calgary made a push in the second period but got stalled by solid goaltending. Greiss gloved Michael Ferland's shot on a rush and got his pad on a chance by Sam Bennett around the midpoint of the period. Later, he stopped Matt Stajan on a breakaway and Alex Chiasson on a heavy one-timer about 15 seconds apart.

The Islanders have won five straight over the Flames and improved to 17-1-3 against Western Conference foes at Barclays Center.

NOTES: Islanders D Adam Pelech exited late in the second period and did not return because of an upper-body injury. ... The Flames have scored two goals or fewer in 13 of their past 16 games. ... Calgary F Johnny Gaudreau missed his eighth straight game with a broken finger. The Flames were also without Ladislav Smid (neck) and Lance Bouma (shoulder). ... The Islanders made Ryan Strome and Scott Mayfield healthy scratches and also sat Ryan Pulock (lower-body injury) and Dennis Seidenberg (upper-body injury).

          UP NEXT

Flames: Host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night to begin a three-game homestand.

          • Tarasenko scores at 3:24 of OT to lift Blues past Stars
            November 28, 2016

ST. LOUIS (AP) Giving up a lead late before going on to win two straight games is not St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock's idea of good hockey.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored at 3:24 of overtime to lift the Blues to a 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on Monday night. Tarasenko took a pass from Jori Lehtera and fired a wrist shot past Stars goalie Antti Niemi for 10th of the season and team-leading 23rd point.

The Stars had tied it with 50 seconds left in the third period on defenseman Jamie Oleksiak's second goal of the game.

''There's a real concern about the leads,'' Hitchcock said. ''There's a real concern about what we gave up and how we did it. We played terrific and had full control of the hockey game. We got careless on our checking and our puck management.''

The Blues also gave up a late third-period goal in Saturday's shootout win over Minnesota.

''There's a lot of good things to like with what's going on right now,'' Hitchcock said. ''You like our spirit and our ability to come back but there's genuine concerns on my part about elements of our game that don't hurt you at home but will kill you on the road. We have to get that cleaned up.''

On the tying goal, Dallas had an extra skater with Niemi pulled and Oleksiak sent the puck at the net from the left point and it got past Blues goalie Jake Allen for his fourth career goal - third against St. Louis.

''I don't come into games thinking (anything) but I was fortunate to get a couple of bounces here and I think I just do what I can,'' Oleksiak said. ''Obviously I have some familiarity with this team. We play them a lot and played them in the playoffs last year and you kind of learn some tendencies and you kind of learn where to be in certain situations.''

Robby Fabbri, Alex Pietrangelo and David Perron also scored for St. Louis, and Allen finished with 18 saves.

Jamie Benn had the Stars' other goal and Niemi stopped 27 shots.

St. Louis improved to 3-3 in games beyond regulation - including 2-2 in overtime - and Dallas fell to 1-6 - all in OT.

''Overtime is killing us right now,'' Benn said.

The Blues took a 3-2 lead with 6:48 remaining as Perron took a pass from Jaden Schwartz and beat Niemi. Perron has the longest active point-scoring streak in the NHL at eight games (three goals, eight assists).

''We were patient there,'' Perron said. ''We were able to come back and get the two points so it's good.''

The Blues improved to 6-1-0 over their past seven games. St. Louis has won its last five home games and is 8-0-2 in the last 10 at Scottrade Center.

The Blues got on the scoreboard first with 6:24 left in the first period when Fabbri took a pass from Robert Bortuzzo in the right circle and sent a low wrist shot past Niemi. It was Fabbri's first goal in six games.

Pietrangelo poked in a loose puck under the Niemi's pad at 4:17 of the second period for a power-play goal to make it 2-0. Patrick Berglund redirected the shot by Pietrangelo but Niemi never completely covered it. Charging the net, Pietrangelo pounced and knocked it in.

''We were all whacking away at it,'' Pietrangelo said. ''Somebody has to score it. I do what I can. I was just hoping it was me. I'll take it. Everybody loves to score.''

Dallas cut the lead in half with 3:39 left in the second when Oleksiak beat Allen with a wrist shot from the right circle. Oleksiak skated around Perron and Pietrangelo to score.

The goal impressed Dallas coach Lindy Ruff.

''He scores two goals. The first one is one you can save for a lifetime and I think it was a turning point for us,'' Ruff said. ''It gave us some belief that we can get back into the game.''

The Stars tied it on a power play when Benn, who also had two assists, scored 1:47 into the third. It was his third goal in his last five games.

St. Louis had two power-play opportunities in the third period and did not put a shot on goal.

This is the second of four meetings between the Stars and Blues this season. Dallas won the first meeting, 6-2, in Dallas on Nov. 3.

NOTES: Oleksiak has three goals in the Stars' last four games after not dressing in the previous three. ... Dallas recalled D Stephen Johns from the Texas Stars of the AHL. Johns played in 16 games with Dallas earlier this season before being sent to the minors. ... Blues F Alexander Steen (upper body) and D Joel Edmundson (upper body) are day to day. ... The Blues have won seven of the last nine regular-season meetings with the Stars, including four consecutive wins at Scottrade Center. ... Dallas is now 0-9-1 when trailing after two periods and St. Louis improved to 7-0-1 with the lead after two periods.

            • Tuesday’s List of 13: nobody asked me, but………

              13) Cleveland Browns are 0-12 as they head into their bye week; 18 of their 53 players Sunday were rookies. They’ve used six different QB’s in 12 games. In a league where close games are the norm, Browns have lost eight games by 11+ points.

A young man named Taylor Gabriel scored four TD’s in his last four games for the Falcons, who are a playoff-bound team. How did Atlanta get him?

Cleveland cut him in September, after he caught 64 passes for 862 yards for them in 2014-15. They cut a guy who is a productive player for a playoff team, and who was also productive for them. Oy.

This is why the Browns are 0-12; they cut productive players.

              12) Nebraska basketball coach Tim Miles has been in all 50 states; I’ve only been in 27, which is fine. No desire to see Alaska or the Dakotas. No offense, just not interested. Hawai’i might be interesting someday.

              11) So the dust settles and Tom Herman is the football coach at Texas, while the team he coached this year gets ready for a bowl game with an interim coach and a depleted staff. Herman’s agent is former NFL lineman Trace Armstrong, who played 15 years in the NFL.

Herman’s first job in football was as a grad assistant at Texas Lutheran; his salary was $5,000 and a meal card, so he has earned his way to the top.

              10) San Diego State-Wyoming play for the Mountain West title this weekend; problem is, they lost their games last weekend by a combined score of 119-66. Hard to get fired up about a championship game in a bad league where the teams that are playing aren’t much better than average.

              9) Evidence of that: Mountain West rivals San Jose State/Nevada already fired their football coaches this week, as coaching carousel begins to spin, slowly.

              8) In its last four games with rival Florida State, Florida Gators have had the ball 50 times and scored two touchdowns. Thats 2 out of 50. No bueno.

              7) Wasn’t happy to hear CBS Sports Network TV guys infer that the Alaskan Shootout may be in danger of not continuing. Reading between the lines of what they said this weekend, and looking at who plays in the event, the main leagues commit teams to the tournaments ESPN run and the Shootout isn’t one of them.

Too bad; Alaska used to be a great event but now they have events in all these tropical places that obviously are more fun to visit than frigid Alaska, plus their TV exposure is better, but it is still too bad, if true.

              6) Smart move by NFL this week, with Minnesota-Dallas the Thursday game. Both teams played on Thanksgiving last week, so they’ll be playing with a full week’s rest and chances are you’ll see a higher quality game.

              5) Bengals kicker Mike Nugent is the first NFL kicker since 1986 to miss three PATs in a row.

              4) In four games in November, Navy’s football team punted TWICE; they scored 66-75 points in their last two games. Thats what happens when you run the ball in a league where no one else cares about anything but throwing the ball. AAC teams mostly suck on defense.

              3) Northwestern has a better basketball team under Chris Collins; they’ve lost tough games to Butler/Notre Dame already, as they try and build a resume that will get them into March Madness. They’re going to be a bubble team, unless they get hot in conference.

It is a little heart-wrenching when the Wildcats play on TV; at some point during the game, they usually cut to a shot of Doug Collins sitting by himself somewhere in the arena, agonizing over his son’s team. It is cool that he cares so much, but you feel for him.

If Northwestern makes the NCAA’s, they’ll be one of the main stories on Selection Sunday, seeing how they’re one of five original college teams that has never made the tournament.

Who are the other four, you ask? Wm & Mary, Army, Citadel, St Francis NY

              2) Good trivia; the longest overtime field goal in NFL history: 57 yards by Sebastian Janikowski of the Raiders.

1— Tulsa’s kicker made a field goal Friday that actually hit both uprights; you don’t see that every day. Not sure I’ve ever seen it before.
